Ed002, I do not like to put you on the spot, but will do on this occasion. Do you think MU will spend big in the next few weeks?

{Ed002's Note - "Big" is subjective Syd. To a mouse, a dolphin looks big. To me, your ass looks humungous.}

1.) 10 Aug 2014
Syd, why are you always hell bent on us spending massive all the time.
We need players but we don't need to throw loads around.
For instance £55m for Di Maria, def not worth it

2.) 10 Aug 2014
From what I heard Syd is rather svelte

3.) 10 Aug 2014
Melwing. because in football you get what you pay for. Top players cost big money! What's your idea?. spend £20 on a centre back from Barrow AFC?9

4.) 10 Aug 2014
I think its more about seeing the club follow through with the promises. Ed Woodward does himself no favours at times, but he is in a lose lose situation at times. If he doesn't say these things then he is accused of being weak and Glazer puppet etc. He does say them and then the UTD world is waiting for something to happen.
The lack of visual activity is worrying, but there is still time and we all hope that its not de ja vu from last season.

5.) 10 Aug 2014
Melwing28 it's not about spending massive. it's about bringing the best players in what we can. And if it means paying over the odds we have to do it. We can't afford to buy potential,, we need the best, di maria would be a great buy. We can't afford another bad season,

6.) 10 Aug 2014
I think that was Sydney asking in a roundabout way about that player from Juventus can't think of his name.

7.) 10 Aug 2014
Spending big does not guarantee success or trophies however it gives you the best possible chance. Real Madrid 10 Euro Cups, Man United 3, pretty much sums up what lack of ambition and investment does. No one is saying we would have won more if we would have spent more but we would be giving ourselves a better chance, had we invested correctly after loosing to Barcelona twice if we did!

8.) 10 Aug 2014
Very good Ed, very good indeed. Okay then, do you think we will sign two or more players in the next few weeks? Thanks.

Oh and my missus says I have a peachy ass. But I guess she's biased :)

{Ed002's Note - Yes.}

9.) 10 Aug 2014
Lol Ed. what if we pretend we are the biggest club in the world. Are we set to spend big in your opinion?

{Ed002's Note - I pretend you will.}

Should we expect any new signings Ed002? Has there been any news of United tabling (not preparing) a bid for any kind of player at all?

Apologies if this is vague. A yes or no would suffice to each question.

Cheers!

{Ed002's Note - Twelve.}

11.) 10 Aug 2014
Haha Ed I like, do you know of any other bids that have went in other than the Vidal/vermaelen?
Have we shown any interest in more wingers other than Di Maria and cuardao?

12.) 10 Aug 2014
Mel, I was trying to see if Ed believed we were going to be busy. If he thought we were going to be busy then it's a good indication that we will be. After all he knows the players we are contacting and enquiring after behind the scenes.

Di Maria would not be a great buy at all for 55m mclovin! He's a glorified nani but triple the price, I'd rather him play januzaj than buy di Maria and put the money where it's needed

14.) 10 Aug 2014
Isn't 002 a she syd?

15.) 10 Aug 2014
Whoah there boca 1978 I'm from barrow n we used to have Steve mcnullty in his prime (18st) surely he'd go for big bucks now if luiz is worth 50 mil ha? It'll hot up this wk and whatever there worth/cost I have every faith in lvg

16.) 11 Aug 2014
Boca, so paying £27m for fellaini made sense? Paying just under £40m for mata?
You can buy great players for cheap prices. Buying top players and spending heavily doesn't mean you'll win anything. Or as above, paying silly prices for players who are not worthy of that price.
Say for instance if we bought Di Maria, £55m is a absolute joke for starters, he also is very inconsistent, he also gives the ball away ALOT, plus where would you play him?
I'd rather get players that'll fit into the system rather than hoping they will.

Ed002, are United still trying hard to get a deal done for Hummels or have we moved on to other targets now?

{Ed002's Note - Dortmund has made it clear they wish to keep Hummels so the chances of a move have gotten slimmer. Manchester United will need to look elsewhere, as will Arsenal who have turned their thought to Veltman.}

18.) 11 Aug 2014
I'm with Melwing on this.

United aren't the type of club who buy the real big-name players, the "marquee signings", as a general rule.

Instead, we buy the good players who fit.

This way works better.

Chorltonred11 compares Utd's 3 Champs league to Real Madrids 10, but if you look at the last 20 year's, Utd have bought the players who fit, Madrid have bought the biggest names, yet Utd have won 12 league titles to Madrids 7, 7 domestic cups to Madrids 5, and only in the champions league have Madrid done better, with 4 to our 2.

That tells me everything I need to know about which approach is better.

19.) 11 Aug 2014
Chorltonred11. you do realise that Madrid spent something like £800+ million since they last won the champions league before last seasons victory.
We have also won the league many times compared to Madrid.

20.) 11 Aug 2014
Looking at what has happened with "targets" and how they have panned out up till now, I think we will get a couple of players in before the deadline but. not the, Di Marias, cuadraro's or hummels that have been rumoured.
Probably more like the De Jong, Vlaar players that will see us till January, then possibly a galactico or 2. Really, not sure if there is as much available to spend with the glazer, business heads possibly wanting to balance the books by offloading at least 5 players to rake back in some of th60m already spent.

21.) 11 Aug 2014
When and where do mice and dolphins meet?

22.) 11 Aug 2014
Cookyman - the Glazers aren't restricting the money spent. People have been blaming them for years now, but if you look across their businesses, the Glazers are perfectly willing to spend big, and they know that you have to spend money to make money, especially in sport.

They understand that spending an extra £10-20m to get a top player instead of a mediocre player could make the difference that earns back several times as much over a few years, in commercial revenues and prize money.

If we aren't signing anyone, it's because the manager can't get the players he wants, and he isn't going to waste money signing players he doesn't want just to please ignorant fans.

23.) 11 Aug 2014
Thorne- they got it right with fellaini yeah?:(
Man utd as well as every other club don't always get it right but agreed they do get players in that have proven their value time and time again.
my point was/is that the rumoured big names seem to be not coming to fruition and that some (seemingly lower in value but not necessarily in talent) signings may be imminent until the manager can get who he wants/when they become available.
obviously wasnt aware that you were in the know as van gaals press officer though!

24.) 11 Aug 2014
Fellaini is an example of what happens when players are signed just for the sake of "look, we signed a midfielder!" instead of the usual careful selection of the right player.

Obviously, United can get it wrong sometimes anyway, but we aren't a club that generally signs big-name "galacticos", so a lack of big name signings is normal and not noteworthy in any way.

I'm not "In the know" at all, but I used to work in finance and I know a little about business, and unlike many, when everyone started blaming the Glazers for our moderate spending a few years ago, I researched a bit about how they operate their businesses, instead of jumping on the band-wagon.

After that, realizing why we haven't spent a vast amount yet is simple deduction.

Famously stubborn manager + injured favorite (Strootman) + seemingly unavailable target (Vidal) = lack of transfer activity which has nothing to do with penny-pinching by the owners.
