I want to be excited about this but I'm actually a bit underwhelmed. He would be an improvement on what we have, but is he United standard? He's only scored something like 3 goals all season and Southampton are going to want 30+ million for him! Bayern signed Douglas Costa for less, that's the standard of player we need to be chasing!

Bayern have an interest in him too. He is the best you can hope for in January. He is versatile, quick - just what we need at this stage.

Redarmy87, many Bayern fans were underwhelmed with the idea of signing Douglas Costa who was a 24yo plying his trade in eastern europe when they moved for him. Many had thought he wouldn't live up to his early promise until he signed for Bayern and has really hit the ground running.

So don't underestimate a seemingly underwhelming signing.

Mane is an excellent player who has been one of the best players in England so far this season. He has 7 goals and 6 assists in 22 games for Southampton this season. If Southampton were playing better he'd probably have scored and assisted a few more.

He ticks all the boxes we need. He is quick, creative, consistent, he scores and he assists, and he plays from the right. He is also premier league proven and wouldn't take too long to settle if he were to sign.

The only better options in our league would be Sanchez or Hazard. And good luck trying to sign one of them.

Very few clubs are prepared to sell their best players in January, and even fewer will be able to come in and make an instant impact.

Remember its not how big the name is but how big the talent is. Vidic, Evra, Solskjear ect, even Hernandez who scored 20 goals in his first season were far from anyones first choice. I expect most of us were underwhelmed with their signings. But that didn't stop them being a success.
