Can anyone envisage there being any substance in reports over willingness to sell Memphis?

I think its lazy journalism and hopefully he can kick on under Mourinho as a number of similar players have in the past.

It's hard to say really without knowing what things are like within the club.

I must say I find it very strange that he is not being given a chance at the club and it reminds me somewhat of Wilfred Zaha.

Memphis signed for a big fee off of the back of a half decent World Cup and has had plenty of games to make an impression. The expectations were a bit lower for Zaha but I get what you mean.

Hopefully Memphis will start to kick on next season.

And hopefully Zaha doesn't make us regret letting him go when we meet at Wembley!

I am. hoping that they have taken him away from the criticism and have got him learning from Gigg's about all aspects of positional play in the PL and the need to defend from the front and support the full back.
If this is the case and a full pre season he will stay and do well next year.
A front 3 with deepay and martial rotating the left side will. be explosive.

I think it would be crazy to sell him unless like was mentioned he has a bad attitude or something like that.

MDH - Memphis signed 12 months after the World Cup. He came in off the back of a very good season in a weaker league - very much in the same way that Zaha did. The fee being higher probably raised expectations somewhat - but there are a lot of parallels between the two signings and looking at how Zaha left - I would not be at all surprised to see the same happen with Memphis.

Personally I think he should stay and be given a chance - but unfortunately for him we have not been in a position this season where we could give him a decent run in the side to build form and confidence without it affecting results; and with LVG at the helm I think that would be the case next year too.

I would like to see him under Jose he does have very good talent. We have got to give him another season to see if he matures, can learn from his mistakes and work hard enough to fulfil his potential.

Memphis just needs to get his head down and work hard on the pitch. He has all the ability to become a world beater, he needs to grab his chances and start dominating games like he was at the world cup and how he did last season for psv. I do sometimes worry when we sign up and coming players as maybe they think they've made it already and lose focus, not just in our club either but in general it seems to happen a lot. Every time a young English player has a couple of good games they are the next best thing since sliced bread and soon move on for a lot of money and get some serious cash every week, and what happens they get found out and spend a few years on loan or on the bench and are sold for peanuts compared to what they have paid.

Not quick enough for the top level. He isn't going to get quicker, his tricks etc are not effective enough most of the time for top level defenders. It is no surprise the games he has stood out were against lower level teams.

I'm afraid he is never going to be good enough and lacks a lot of the things that players of lesser technical skill have that make up for their lack of natural talent.

I think that is a bit harsh Beast, I'm first to admit I've been very disappointed with the lad. He has such potential, but he needs to pull his head out of his arse if he wants to reach that potential.

I don't think the way we play is suited to the kind of player Depay is, Di Maria who is a proven top level player hardly did much better than the young lad who was taking a massive step up and moving countries for the first time.

In the right team and with the right attitude from Memphis then he can become a great player capable of making the difference in key games.

He has great top end speed but his acceleration isn't great, probably because he has built himself up too much. As a result he isn't suited to a possession styled team. We have the ball too high up the pitch giving him little space to run into and requiring far more acceleration than he has in order to exploit those smaller spaces.

He needs to play in a counter attacking side which will sit much deeper and give him the space he needs to run into and get up to pace.

Which brings us to the issue of stick or twist, I'd like to see him stay and become a success with us. But that would be almost entirely dependant on his attitude and the style of play we are going to play next season. He isn't a bad player, just the wrong type of player for the way we currently want to play.

Therefore if he is displaying the correct attitude, and the aim is to become more of a counter attacking side next season then he should stay. Where as if his attitude hasn't been up to scratch, and we intend to play with possession and/ or with a high line then it maybe best to let him go and recoup as much as we can and give him the chance to be a success elsewhere. I don't worry myself about him being a success elsewhere, if it isn't going to happen with us for whatever reason then I wish him the best. No point being spiteful about it.

That's a great observation Shappy, however don't you think LvG was aware of that before signing him?

I'm sure he did to an extent mbd, but I expect he felt there was more to Memphis and he could be developed further. Also it is good to have a player or two in your squad who is ideally suited to counter attacking. At the World cup LvG kept Memphis on the bench and brought him on in the last 15-20 minutes to hit teams on the counter once the game had opened up. So clearly knew that was what Memphis' strength was. Like I said maybe he wanted to use him in a similar way, or maybe he thought he could be developed. I also read somewhere that between the world cup and when we signed him Memphis had gained over 12 pounds of muscle mass, which is a lot in a professional athlete, and will probably have had an effect on his game. This is the issue with wingers, you want them to have the strength to hold off full backs, but more muscle makes them heavier and less flexible which hits their acceleration. It's a fine balance.

I don't think he should be sold, however he did get a few chances and he did not take them! In my opinion Martial should be played on the left for another few seasons, he can beat anyone inside or out and his final product is very good and getting better all the time! So I don't know where Depay Should play! Lingards shooting is poor so maybe rotate Lingard and Depay on the right and see who nails the position!

Deserves a chance with a manager that believes in playing football. I hope his lack of action is due to someone shielding him from the philosophy and critise. Everyone on the site needs to lay off him at present. If there is no tangible improvement a years time, I would think it fair, even desirable that he goes.
