Would people be happy if Mourinho signs an extention at the end of the season? .

Right now we seem to be moving in the right direction. Winning and scoring goals.
But we started off great last season as well and hardly played a top team this season so far.
So let’s wait a little longer on this, I would say.

Contracts mean virtually nothing in this scenario, we could just pay him off if we wanted him gone as we did with LVG and Moyes. Alternatively he could just walk at any time as he has so much money now. More important for players than managers imo.

I'd just give rolling 1 year contracts anyway. You only want a manager that is happy to work at the club, and why handicap yourself to paying compensation if they aren't good enough or their heart isn't in it? So I wouldn't extend anything long term, just at the end of each season I'd assess the performance and say ok we think you are worth X amount for another 12 months and here are your targets, take it or Grump off! I'd also only pay a nominal basic, but huge bonuses on achieving the objectives. That way a confident manager will back himself and drive it for the big payday. I'd also do that with players, you only want the ones that truly believe they will do as they claim they will.

It will only take a couple of the top clubs to do this and everyone else will fall in line. No longer will wages be out of control for failures, only the best will be rewarded and kids won't be crippled before they start their careers with ridiculous money without delivering anything.

Yes. You can see the progression of the side and that we actually have a plan for now and the future.
We would all love Sir Alex back but what we now need is stability and so long as Mourinho does not have a 3rd season blow up we will be okay.

I think we would have a very successful spell in the clubs history if Jose stays for 8-10 years, if we keep improving the quality of players as we have so far under him and continuing to improve the youth system he will leave us in a good position and success on the pitch would relate to even more success financially, i am very excited for the future of our club and think the team is in capable hands.

As Beast says though, contract don't mean a great deal in the current game, although as it stands I can't see a better manager out there for us and can't see a better club out there for Jose so all good as it stands.

I agree that contracts be for the manager or the player never dictate whether the manager or player stays or not but what it does ensure is some protection that if they were to go due to their own decision or they were approached by another club, we would get a fairer deal rather than if they only have 1 year left on their contract.

I also think if Mourinho signs an extension it signifies the clubs intent for longevity and consistency with the project which may appeal to future transfer targets. RVP was a prime example who came to play for Sir Alex and was left gutted when he retired the following year.

Unfortunately this doesn't always work, David Moyes, but s a different level, a different beast to Moyes so I think him signing a long term contract is a good signal. I also believe this is the job he will stay in longer than any of his previous jobs, I can see him staying for a good 6 to 8 years at United.
