Ed001 - talk to me about Gareth Bale, I know he's going to be offered here and is interested in United but are we interested in him? Spurs have first refusal correct? I'd be surprised to see Levy willing to pay what it takes.

{Ed001's Note - previously United were interested but Madrid did not want to sell. I can't see why they would have dropped their interest in him now. Imagine Woodward clinching that signing, it would enable him to ask for so much more when Yanmar want to put United's name on their next tractor.....}

Never understood the snarkiness about sponsorship. No club cna do without it now. Which PL club would turn down money from a tractor company or noodle partner. they might intimate they would and their fans might say they would but they wouldnt. Every club does it.

Money is money. Arsenal signed a sleeve deal for visit rawanda, suppodedly for 30 mill, whilst Rawanda receive foreign aid from UK? How well does that sit with football fans

First club shop not UTD

First club to commercially tour China. not UTD

First club to commercially tour USA . not UTD.

First club to have in house TV channel. not UTD

First club to have shirt sponsorship, ground naming, sleeve sponsorship . not UTD

Most expensive season tickets in PL. not UTD

Most expensive season tickets in old first divison . not UTD. cheaper than Coventry city to name one of 7

Most expensive season tickets in old second division. not UTD.

BoyfromBurrenway - I think you are looking at it the wrong way mate for this particular point. Nobody should have a problem with the club making the most of it's brand to gain sponsors.

The problem is when those sponsorship deals come first, ie, tractor sponsor says to the club we will sponsor you for X amount if you sign Bale! Or there are two potential signings, one is more suited to the team, but the other is more financially beneficial sponsorship wise - where do you think we would go?

The sense I get and I assume many others get, is that we would tend to choose money making as a short-term priority. You can get both of course but that is why people can be a bit 'snarky'.

Fair point, well made Beast. Its getting harder and harder to seperate business/ football and to a degree celebrity/ entertainment/ showbiz.

I can remember a time when every club had a commercial office or a deal maker. you just never knew who they were. Woodward/ Levy etc etc are high profile figures now, something that doesn't sit well with me.

That’s because previously they never really needed and let’s be honest, everyone knew who the chairman was of their own club as well as others.

Let’s also be honest, does anyone have any experience working in a global business negotiating these deals? IF you do, and I for one do too, you’ll know just how hard they are not only to find, but also to get them signed up. I have a lot of respect for Woody, whose sole objective is to make us as profitable as possible as well as negotiate with greedy agents and players every day.
