For me Mourinho made two mistakes,

The first being starting too many players who were fully fit. Shaw, Mkhitaryan, Fellaini and Lingard all have have an injury issue which has restricted them recently. Having so many players not quite 100%, ment we were always going to come out second best up against Pep's high press.

The second mistake was to play a two man midfield, allowing a team to out number us in the middle let them dictate the game. 433 was the way to go.

We saw in the second half when a couple of the not 100% fit players went off and we brought on an extra midfielder we were more than able to match them. But it was too little too late.

Negative tactics cost us this game. First chink in Mourinhos armor.

Has Mou ever used anything but the 4231 formation? At any club?

{Ed004's Note - He has used 433 and the diamond at other clubs}

Thought we would lose but did nit want to post it as it goes against the current Mood. Need to drop rooeny and figure out what's our best 11 without who they are and reputations. Mickitarian was like division 2 player and does not deserve to start for a long time until he can show he has a bt of courage in a tackle. total rubbish if you as me.

{Ed004's Note - He was poor today and I think it was a mistake playing him but he showed against hull how good he can be}

Shappy,

I don't know if you are pro/ negative Mourinho, but I wouldn't call the tactics negative, they were just wrong.
Most, myself included wanted Miki to start and just as many saying Martial needs to be taken out of the starting 11. Miki though looked completely off the pace.
That said only 2 of Pogba/ Fellaini in midfield allowed City to dominate the midfield and the game - Herrera instead of Lingard would have been better in a 4-3-3, but hindsight is always easy.
Jose picked a team he thought could win, and that selction, assuming the players perform should have been good enough to match City. Miki and Lingard didn't work and Pogba was largely anonymous.
The better team won. De Bruyne was easily the best player on the field. Rooney, Valencia and Fellaini were our best players.
Blind is being crucified for the first goal but it was actually Bailly (who I think is a great buy) who was at fault and left Blind in no mans land - he either needs to challenge for the initial header or drop off - he did neither and Blind was left flat footed.
Lessons to be learnt. Lot of reason to be optimistic, but a long way to go and City will be real contenders, as will Chelsea.
Disappointed, but the best team won and it was lost in the first half when the team didn't compete well enough. In all honesty he should have taken Lingard off and put Herrera on after 20 minutes.

sorry rooney was just as rubbish.

Yeah he has. But he could have used 4231 and still had three men in the middle, it would just mean your No.10 played more like a No.8.

But Rooney has shown he can't do that effectively. Herrera or Pogba could have played that role today and we would have been far more effective. As was shown when Wayne was pushed out wide.

Jose used 433 to stifle Pep's Barcelona when at Inter. So he uas a history of using that formation to beat a Pep team. He also used it to beat Pep when in charge at Real Madrid. I think I might be right in saying its the only formation Mourinho has beaten Pep with.

{Ed004's Note - I agree that tactics were at fault today and we should have gone with a midfield of Pogba, Schneiderlin and Herrera/Fellaini today (if fellaini couldn't be dropped). However would have left us lacking pace out wide because rooney has to start apparently. Although, Rooney is behind a list of players who deserve criticism today so not much point scapegoating him}

Have'nt posted for a while. The biggest mistake from Jose was worrying too much what city would do rather than concentrate On what we should do. Not too disappointed a long way to go but lingard is never utd quality I'm afraid to say.

Why are you surprised exactly? Mourinho always sets up his team's that way, very cowardly. Expect same or even worse against Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. IMO, Mou antiquated and at best should be managing a national team. Really don't see anything special about him.

Have to agree. We should have gone 433 today and played the fittest team possible.

Rooney was rubbish but there were 6 other players that were worse then him.
