I would like to ask the million dollar question to all posters on the page.

If Mourinho fails to finish in the top four will he be judged the same as Moyes and Van Gaal who ultimately fell on the sword? Or will Mourinho be treated differently because of who his reputation?

Are all animals equal or are some animals more equal than others?

I'm guessing as I've said every season that CL is the minimum requirement. Unless otherwise put into his contract that it's not.

he should get 2 seasons like Van Gaal, Moyes is different imo, coming straight after Fergie he was bound to get it.

If we start playing well soon and I mean consistently well, not simply better than LVG which virtually any team can do. Then I would give him more time.

If he changes his attitude and starts looking like he wants to be here, then I would also give him more time, even if we finish outside top 4. But I honestly believe we deserve to be where we are at the minute when you take the season as a whole. We are going to win games we deserve to lose and lose games we deserve to win - but we need to see real solid progress, not the huffing and puffing we see at the minute.

We learnt the hard way that it doesn't count for much having a decent CV at other clubs, we are a different animal. He hasn't done much to earn our faith yet at Utd, trust is earned in my book. So it's a massive depends for me, but failing to get top 4 is a disgrace with the tools he has at his disposal.

Depends, what if we win the league cup and europa cup but finish 5th? that's a no brainer for me he stays.

What if we donr win europa, finish 6th but only say 6 points behind the champions and only 3 points from second making it the closest top 6 ever?

IMO he gets a second season at least even if we finish outside top 4.

Moyes took over a title winning side, that's the difference. He failed with the title winning side and so had to go. LVG got two seasons and we regressed further. At some point you have to give a manager some time. We can't keep firing managers season after season. So for me, having seen performance improvement if nothing else, he needs at least two years before we even think about that.

We have to give him at least 2 years.

{Ed025's Note - thats exactly what the judge said about me leahy.. :)

Beast. We played poorly against Watford, Chelsea and first half against City and we lost all three matches.
We played exceptionally well against Stoke, Burnley, arsenal and West ham and didn't beat any of them. So I would say that our position is not a true reflection.
It's been very frustrating for that manager, the team and the fans as we've certainly not got what we deserved.
We've been on the wrong end of some terrible refereeing decisions.
Things will improve.
For anyone even thinking of what should happen to mourinho is ridiculous. I do agree though that he has to change and look as if he's enjoying it as it is sending the wrong vibes out.

He needs 2 seasons at least. This is a much bigger job that first thought. I like the signs already though, playing much better football than years gone by.

Beast I see what you are saying but for me a top four finish is mandatory. I think a lot of folk forget they were building Utd up as league champs before a ball was kicked.

I believe Jose has a better squad than what LVG had and a much better squad than Moyes. LVG only marginally kept his seat at the table after squeezing into 4th place in his first season and was rightly chopped for failing to do so the season after. If the club fail to reach the CL this season we will also be hit hard finally with Adidas withdrawing part of their sponsorship fee on top of a couple of years without CL royalties.

Personally I feel there is basic objectives at hand and if Jose isn't capable of meeting them his job will become untenable.

To be fair maze we have to give him another summer transfer window to see who he brings in and who he gets rid of, its not easy to build a team in the first season, you have a few valuable points, we shoudnt be finishing outside the top four at least, now if he wants it i would be happy to see what he can put together in his first 2 seasons.

Here we go again discussing sacking the manager, proper embarrassed to be a United fan at times, this is the kind of tripe you expect to read on the Liverpool site.

Who do we get if we sack Mourinho? Do we just keep sacking managers if they don't get top 4 or do we look at the fact we are playing good football (which is all both of you wanted last season) and allow the best manager we could have at the minute to build something rather than expecting things immediately. We aren't far away, anyone who knows football can see that, let's look upwards rather than downwards, what happens if we win the league, Europa league, league cup, FA cup and FIFA fair play award, does he keep his job then?

Stand, the perceived wisdom on here, is that Fergie left us up sh1t creek without a paddle, with that squad. He's constantly being pulled up for the state he left the club in. So which is it? Title-winning squad, or a mess?

I think he will get the duration of his contract personally I think he is the right man for the job he has improved the team collectively and individually and as I said the other day with the exception of some dodgy finishing we would be within spitting distance of the top.

Deano I will be very surprised if Jose sees out his contract even if things are going really well. Has he ever seen lit an entire contact as a manager? He has a fleeting personality and it is not in his nature to be committed for so long in my opinion.

Fair point maze I just feel/ hope that this may be the job to change that I'll be honest I'm already sick of chopping and changing managers I'm not used to it.

Moyes was sacked prematurely but lvl had to go. Moyes said what we see now happening atet the club needed a massive overhaul and addition of 8 high quality players. Whether his style and players would have gotten us where we want to be is another debate and we will never know as his history with Everton is not a benchmark given their lack of funds.

Mourinho is a winner and no one can dispute that. He has inherited a part Fergie and part LVG team with the exception of the wig and Mata that moyes brought in. I think he needs one more summer window to put his stamp on this team and then if we are not competing for top honors, there is a valid argument to see him gone but until then we have 24 games left and 72 total points at stake, so let's see we end up.

Yes SAF left a title winning side BUT IMO we were lucky to win it the last 2 times before he retired. He left an ageing and weakened team for his successor and any Manager would have needed a complete overhaul of the team and would have needed at least 2 seasons to even think about the title, 3 years to challenge.

Add in to the 3 years time frame i have just mentioned and we have had 2 contrasting managers and are now on our 3rd - again with his own ideas. We messed up with LVG, we should now be in our 4th year post SAF with a the same Manager that we have had for 3 years.

swapping and changing will only add to this!

Anyone can post whatever they want as long as it's not inappropriate. Freedom of expression and all that but I think the op is a wind up tbh. How many times have we discussed this on this site? But to answer the question plainly yes some animals are more equal than others he will get another season regardless of final league position.
