With an awful lot of discussion regarding De Gea and his future with United, I wonder if there is even a remote possibility that the team will have a sit-down to level with him.

I, like most of you, do not want him to go and feel he is one of the top keepers I'm the world. However, why not just pull him in the office and have an honest discussion about his desires?

We could simply say "David, do you want to be here long term, or is your heart in Madrid? This could be a win win as we could help you get to Madrid while you could help us get proper compensation (player or money) . "

I know football is not so cute and dry like that, however Ronaldo did something very similar for us on his way to Madrid.

Just my thoughts.

{Ed004's Note - How do you know this hasn't already happened? I reckon the club are aware of what De Gea wants}

You are correct Ed, it very well may have happened. However, if it hasn't then I hope it will. I do feel that David is appreciative of what the club has done for him and he for the club so one could hope.

{Ed004's Note - The really reassuring thing about having Jose is that I'm not concerned if Madrid go in for De Gea or not. He will a) have a suitable replacement in mind (unlike Van Gaal with Navas and Valdes) and b) we will either get a tonne of cash (talking world record fee for a gk) or players in a swap. Hopefully we are stubborn and ask for Varane + Kroos or Bale (we might have to give money in that incident). However, we are not in a weak position and I can't see United or Woodward being bullied by Madrid}

I think something can be done with regards to kroos but I would imagine they will want similar money to what unt will value DDG at 60 mil ish?

{Ed004's Note - I've no idea what they value him at but if Kroos wants out surely that would reduce their bargaining chips}

I love ddg. He's been an incredible keeper. However, as I wrote a few weeks back, he's not irreplaceable. Fantastic shot stopper but he's not the best at commanding his area and not great at crosses. He's also average at distribution.
So if he wants to go to Real then good luck. But we need one if their best players as part if the deal. So Kroos or Bale.

{Ed025's Note - good luck with that mate..

I think ddg distribution is pretty good, I'm always amazed how average a player becomes when there is talk of him leaving united he has been our best player last few years and is one of the best players in the world in his position.

{Ed004's Note - I tend to agree. The only reason I suggested the players I have is because I rate De Gea as the best (maybe 2nd best to Neuer) in the world. Therefore I expect Madrid to bid something stupid to get him off us. Watching Mbappe tonight and he'll probably go for well over 60 million so I'd be expecting over that for someone who is among the worlds best in his position and who you'll get 10 years service off}

I would be saying 70 million at least however some papers have mention he has some sort of release clause in his contract maybe Ed can enlightened us on that, don't know if it's a load of rubbish though

I would also be saying we have to take either Kroos or Casemiro as a gentleman agreement to buy from them

Play hard ball best we can, go and get Handanovic who should cost around 20 to 30 million

Also to consider is United relationship with Madrid, their still could be some sour grapes still from the fax machine issue.

{Ed002's Note - My understanding is that there is no termination clause in his contract.}

What exactly is a termination contract ed002?

{Ed002's Note - It should say "no" not "now" above. Perhaps a reminder about transfer related clauses would be apt. This is a horribly complex area not least because they are written under individual national laws. They cause a great deal of misunderstanding with football supporters and the media alike.

The "buy out" clause is legally binding between a club and a player. The "buy out" is effectively what it says - a means for the player to buy himself out of the contract. As an example, if a player wishes to buy himself out of a contract, he pays the applicable FA (on behalf of the club) the amount of the "buy out" clause effectively becoming a free agent. The problem is that in most cases a player would need to obtain that money from the buying club - and this is fraught with issues regarding "tapping up" and, of course, taxation (as it can be seen as income for the player and would therefore be subject to income tax). There was a test case about the taxation issue in Spain about four years ago. So "buy out" clauses are very rare.

A "release clause" is far more common in that it gives a figure that the club would accept for the sale of a player to another club - but it is not legally binding except where both parties are in the same country (for the sake of argument I should say that Spain and Portugal count as the same country as do England and Wales) for legal purposes. These are normally unreasonably high figures (Messi at Barcelona for example) introduced to act as a deterrent for hostile bids - and even then the club could easily block a move. However, if a club does agree to match a release clause then the selling club would be obliged to ask the player if he is interested - there is no obligation on the player to make a move. For interested clubs outside of the country the selling club may use it as a guide but are under obligation to accept a bid.

There is then the becoming popular "termination clause" which is binding between the player and the club and if met would see an offer from anywhere accepted and the player given the opportunity to make a call on a move. This overcomes the issues associated with "buy out" clauses as the money would be paid by one club to another.}

Thanks ed002, so madrid will have to pay whatever utd feel is fair value and that is if ddg really wants to leave in the first place, as atleast i wouldn't sell him unless he asks to leave.

{Ed002's Note - It is no different to any other transfer CSM. Business as usual.}

So is this what happened when Suarez's release clause was met by Arsenal, however Liverpool refused to allow the transfer?

It makes sense since the release clause is not legally binding.
