I don't understand some of the criticism on the Matic signing. It was only 5 years ago we were starting Carrick + Cleverley as a midfield 2!

Yes he might be classed as a 'Chelsea reject' now after the babyyakodokolala signing, but he's still a PL proven defensive midfielder, something we are seriously lacking within the squad.

50m is a lot of money, however as we all know prices have gone crazy this season and I can't see that changing. Walker just went for the same price!

Overall a quality signing and having Lukaku and Matic both added to our squad is a great push onto next season, we have a tendency to do well with signing other premier league players.

My only criticism is the timing. Would have been nice for Matic to get a bit more of a pre season with the rest of the lads to hit the ground running at the start of the season. I'm sure there are valid reasons though.

I think we were pursuing other targets and genuinely wanted Dier - when that wasn't possible we finalises the deal.

He is excellent at what he does and will be a great signing. Not required in every game but certainly needed in the big ones and in Europe.
