Don't get the negativity from some on here aimed at Harry Maguire. Couple of weeks ago he was being talked about as a star because of the World Cup! So he can't be that bad?

When you look at his career you see massive improvements season on season, he's been player of the year for 5 consecutive years at different clubs ( may be incorrect ) . If he had another yard of pace he'd be destined for great things imo.

I have my doubts about him, but I'm willing to give him a chance. His career shows he's willing to learn, and maybe just maybe he could develop into the centre half people said he was a couple of weeks ago.

I just don't think he is any better than what we currently have caolan.

If alderweireld has been priced out of a move, I understand looking at someone else but surely there are better CBS out there than Maguire. If not, I would rather go with what we have.

Lindelof hasn't even got a decent chance yet.

Surely we go a bit more and get an established world class centre half. Maguire far too slow and not great defensively just think it would be more of the same desperate signing a player that we will be looking to offload in 2 years.

I think he has potential though, not saying he’s my choice at all. But he could be a good signing, maybe needs the platform. Maybe bailly’s pace could work well with him? The manager and scouts must see something in him.
I just find it weird that he’s already being written off and we haven’t even signed the lad and we may not yet.

Said it yesterday. If Maguire was Italian he would be one hell of a signing. 😆😆.

Not a fan of Maguire for some of the reasons given above.
But the one thing in his favour (besides being home grown) is that that he has the potential to get better. That can’t be said really for Jones and Smalling. They seem to have plateaued at their current level. There is still a possibility he gets better. MOU is usually good at improving defenders.

If he is, then he has two young defenders with bags of potential bought over the last two summers who he should be getting to work on improving.

He didn't have a great world cup, he did OK in a tea that was OK against rubbish opposition and got found out as soon as they payed anyone with any quality.

I think he's decent, no more than that. Wonder if we could get a Jimenez for that sort of money?

If he hadn’t scored that goal, he wouldn’t have been talked about. The simple fact is he isn’t a great defender. Yes he is good at set pieces, yes he is comfortable on the ball, but he is careless in dangerous areas and often out of position.

Spot on AJH. He has been built up by the media because he is British. The free being reported is extortionate to say the least. Nou I would love us to go for Gimenez I think he is a very good player. And I’m sure if we are offering £65m then Atletico will think hard. Rumours that Godin is available. For a short term fix he would be perfect. Incredible defender, the best in the world for me. Makes it look so easy. We need quality and signing Maguire is too risky.

He did have a very good World Cup, offensively and defensively and the fact he was a danger in their box for most of last season and the World Cup suggests he does have attributes that we don’t have in any of our other centre halves.

Is he a step up on smalling and Jones? Yes
Is he worth the money? Probably not but who is these days, the prices are ridiculous, £60m is the new £15m and the club can afford it.

I actually like McGuire. I think he's improved a lot, he's a leader and he's a big threat at set pieces. He's head and shoulders above smalling, jones and rojo.
The argument that he's slow, doesn't quite stack up either, he played in a 3 man defence in WC and several times rescued us with his speed.
However, is he worth £80m? Not in my opinion, but this is a crazy world we live in. If we were to buy him, I'll be delighted.

80m, Ronaldo or Maguire.

Spurs are supposedly demanding between 70-75m for the best defender in the league. Maguire at best is half the player Alderweireld is. That makes him a 35-40m player even in today's crazy market.

Would rather David Luiz than Maguire and we could have picked him up for a song if we had been smart.

Shappy,

I'm sure you are cleverer and understand things a lot better than that very simplistic view, length of contract, age, salary are all things that can contribute to the cost of a player not just how good you think they are.

A player is worth what a club is willing to accept or a buying club is willing to pay for them also, not what people on a forum judge to be a fair price.

It's on the cards pal . I think he will do well to be honest.

You been on the tarot cards again jerd 😂

In all seriousness though I'd rather we wouldn't but would hope he'd smash it if he did come.
