This new contract offer for Mata.

I genuinely like him as a footballer since he came to the club and has been a decent servant.
But surely now is the time to go, offering him a new contract is not working on rebuilding the team.

Also if Ashley young is our starter rb you may aswell forget next season, he has cost us many times.

Will be an unpopular opinion but when we are all talking about a bad egg in Pogba and getting him out the club I think keeping a very good professional, humble and honest individual like Mata will be a good thing for young players. I am not expecting and certainly hoping the contract isn’t to signify his role in the team as I agree this is not beneficial in moving forward but we do certainly need more “professional” players around the squad than these jumped up attention seeking individuals who are always on the look out for their next big pay cheque.

I agree ports but if the contract is a pay rise and is for 2 more years, it is only damaging the club long term.

I would like for us to just take the risk let him go and give someone younger the chance to play.

Its pros an cons really. He doesn't offer enough on the pitch to justify a new contract. But he's a popular professional who's a good influence in the dressing room. There's a lot who should go before him but looks like we'll have them here next season. Ultimately its up to him. Does he want to stay as a bit part player or move somewhere for regular game time.

If Management want to keep him around as a good influence on the dressing room and the younger players, they should offer him some sort of coaching role or player development role. They shouldn’t take up a squad position for this.

I’m not sure on how reliable the reports were about the team taking a pay cut if they failed to qualify for the Champions League but if it is to be believed, I know renewing a contract may result in a different scenario to existing contract but surely (I know I shouldn’t be giving Woodward to much credit here) they wouldn’t renew at a higher wage?! Therefore I think Mata on a lesser wage, assuming he wasn’t one of the bigger earners anyway, is not the worst idea. Against the “lesser” teams playing him in a 10 role with 2 energetic CM’s and him playing balls to James, Rashford and one of Lingard or Martial would be quite effective IMO.
