What is everyone's view on Jack Grealish.
What will he bring to team? And what position will he play on the pitch.

Ed002 has said, Grealish is a clear target for the club.
I have not watched much of him at Villa.
But, I see many pundits raving about him and saying he should snub United for Liverpool etc, .

Several papers today are also reportng that the club is trying to close the deal sson.

TRD, I'm not convinced by him. He has decent stats at villa. Bit of a diver and carries s bit of attitude also. Good player but can he make the step up? Who knows. He is talented and he does work hard at villa where he is the main man.
Dives a bit to easy for my liking i'm not sure if he would be a good signing or not only time will tell.

{Ed001's Note - does he work hard? He certainly doesn't track back much or press. That is a big part of their problem that he is just stood watching games for large periods as Villa don't have the ball and he is not putting in the work to get it back.

I fully agree with you on the diver bit, he is the 'most fouled' player in the league according to the stats. However if you actually look at the 'fouls', 99% of them are him throwing himself to the ground because he has run himself into a dead end and has nowhere to go. For some reason refs give him the decision, even though it is clear he is not being touched.}

Reminds me of a slightly more consistent Jesse Lingard.
We need plays will play for the shirt. I'd stay clear of him.
Although in sure ED002 said that since we have signed Bruni that Grealish and Maddison were not longer targets.

Tris is not a fan! I like him I like his swagger and I like his skills. He glides past players, sees a pass, and can score.

There are 2 clear issues for me. He doesn't work hard enough (which can be fixed) and the swagger I mentioned could morph into a Billy big boots attitude.

If he was joining the past United team full of leaders then I think they would have sorted him, this team I'm not so sure.

He will either let it go to his head or he will step up 6become a great. I'm happy to take the risk.

And I don't agree that 99% of his fouls aren't fouls, refs aren't that daft (sorry Tris) .

{Ed001's Note - are you serious? Refs are that daft, they are terrible. Did you not see the ones that have been given against Zaha? There was a piece about how opponents are ganging up on Zaha done in one of the papers. The 'fouls' referred to were shown on TV here and not one was a foul on Zaha. In fact a lot of them were him committing the foul and getting a free kick! Refs are terrible, just go back and look at the Lo Celso stamp if you still think they aren't that daft, then remember that the ref who was on VAR is now on FIFA's international list. So he is adjudged to be one of the best we have, not just in England, but in the world!}

AJH,

He is a big fish in a small pond. If he moves to a United he would be a decent player. We need top players with the right attitude.

I'm sure he and Lingard would love sending snapchats to each other over who had the best summer holiday etc.

Grealish is a good dribbler, can play wide, but really seems best driving forward out of midfield. He certainly pulls defenders in, which would open up space for the pacier lads like Rashford, James and Martial. I see him working well against smaller teams along with Fernandes, with Fred or McTominay. Grealish and Fernandes offer different kinds of threat, but both can unlock a stubborn defence, and trying to defend against both at once would make it all the more difficult.

Against Bigger teams, I think Fernandes would take the lead ahead of Fred and McTominay, as he's already shown he's got a tenacious combative streak as well, and the three of them together should win back possession effectively, with Fernandes having the vision to create openings on the break. Grealish could take that place if Fernandes is unavailable, he's quick enough and could carry the ball forward and make openings, but he doesn't offer much in winning the ball back.

comes across a bit like memphis when at our club; loads of promise but never hitting the mark. The lad has confidence in himself but think he would struggle in our team even at the moment when we are in transition. There are a fair few players before him in my opinion especially with the figures mooted.

Has played most of best football for villa on the left wing where we have rashford.

If ole sticks with 4-2-3-1 bruno is the clear number 10.

If ole moves to a 4-3-3 we don't have anyone remotely good enough to play as the deepest midfielder with bruno and grealish ahead of them. don't kid yourselves into thinking fred or mctominay can do that role.

Plenty of other priorites ahead of grealish.

Don't you think we should go for John McGinn instead of Grealish Ed001? Replace Pogba with Saul and we'll have have a very strong midfield, McTominay, Saul, Bruno Fernandes, McGinn and James Garner?

{Ed001's Note - I would say so, much better player imo and much better suited to United's need too.}

For me it could go two ways with Grealish. I think he is the right type of No.10 we need, someone who'll drive forward with the ball from deep and draw defenders to him.

That said is he good enough? I don't think there would be half the hype around him as there is if he was French for example.

He is clearly talented, but does he work hard enough? I wonder if he is one of these players that are better suited to being the big fish in the small pond. Some players look great when at mid sized clubs, but lack something when at a big club. He seems to have the attitude to take the pressure and the spot light while at Villa. But to do that at a club like United, Liverpool or Chelsea you need to work really hard as well. Does he have that?

I think he would be a very signing, really hope we get him.

Ed,

With regards to grealish not working hard or tracking back, could it be possible that he might have been instructed by the manager to do so. I mean if I am the manager and my player is not doing what I have asked to do, I would consider him dropping, isn't it?

{Ed001's Note - and who would you drop him for when you are in charge of Villa? He has never been good at tracking back or pressing, he just wants to be on the ball and pretend he is George Best.}

What do you think of them midfield options Ed001? (Fernandes, Saul, McTominay, Garner, McGinn), got a bit of everything, well balanced. All hard workers but can actually play well aswell.

{Ed001's Note - certainly looks good on paper, the one worry would be that the two Mc's have been injured a fair bit this season, so maybe you could do with an extra body as cover. Especially with Garner being so young and inexperienced, he might well not play well right away.}

I don't see why we're clamouring for grealish when we've just signed fernandes. Grealish best position is exactly where we should be playing fernandes. Much rather we focused on someone to replace pogba and matic.

27 Feb 2020 19:38:19
My bad Ed, never mentioned the cover players, focused on players who are good enough to be in first XI only. Matic, Fred, Pereira can step up in cup games or come off the bench to see off a win etc.

{Ed001's Note - ah ok sorry.}

How are things Ed001? Must be looking forward to winning the, i can't even say it, but you get the gist? 😂.

{Ed001's Note - I am not ready to count my chickens just yet. Only when the trophy is lifted, by whoever it is that wins it, will I accept it is won. I know it may be silly, but so many things can turn a season on its head at the drop of a hat. I just think about the next game and take it one game at a time.

It is difficult to enjoy it when your team has thrown it away so many times before!}

You'll be fine Ed, normal to be feeling how you are right now, 30 year wait coupled with a few very close title races but your time has come, not a chance you'll bottle it this time around. Hope we can challenge soon enough though 🤞🏻.

{Ed001's Note - I am sure you will be back at some point. Eventually.}
