if we ended the transfer window with a few outs and managed to get in VdB (40m), Alex Telles (20m), perisic (10m + smalling) and Ismailia Sarr (40m), would you classify this window as a failure? i think we will still be a striker and a CB short of a decent squad, and having spent only about £110m, if we can recover some decent money for players leaving, there may be some opportunity for business in Jan and setting up the squad nicely for a a top class forward next summer (e. g. haaland, sancho, fati etc. ) and a few peripheral players.

Depends on your definition of ‘decent’. I think we would be a player or 2 away from challenging for the top honours if we did that, remember after Bruno signed we didn’t lose a league game, a good start and a couple more signings and we will have more than a ‘decent’ squad, I think we already have one, people (Myself included obviously) just want us to get them extra players in order to challenge for the title.

I don't think you could call it a failure but it would be pretty underwhelming in my opinion with the exception of VDB. Squad options were one of the main issues last season and signing those players makes the squad stronger in the face of it.

I'd say the main problem with these signings is why would we improve the squad by signing players who are not certain starters? Signing 2 or 3 who are good enough to push others out of our current best 11 makes our squad stronger. Sign Alaba for example, he is considerably better than Telles and Shaw. Shaw would then make a good back up left back / left CB in a 3. That's the sort of signing we should be looking at imo.

I think a successful window also includes moving on a number of players. I won't bother listing them because we all know who they are.

It would mean we would have signed a LB, CAM, RW and auxiliary forward. I don't think we could really complain too much about that. Personally there are other possible targets that I think would be better or at least I'd prefer. But then I don't own the club so I don't get a say.

While there is a lack of quality at CB there certainly isn't an issue with depth. While the striker position is an odd one. Martial looked like making the position his own last season, however he does pick up a few injuries. Rashford also had a breakout season as a top player, yet he clearly is better off the left hand side. Then Greenwood looks a future great, but is he ready to lead the line for potentially a couple of months if there was an injury to Martial? Ighalo is decent cover but he will leave in January. So on the face of it we have 4 players for one position, yet there is a potential issue with all of them.

I'd be happy if we sign a RW and a LB to go with DvdB. I'd be happy if we only sign Sancho from here on out.

We have a decent squad with some excellent youngsters coming through.

Absolute failure. Bringing in Perisic would be a terrible move, especially for £10m and arguably the best defender in Italy last season. I wouldn’t take Perisic + £10m for Smalling, let alone the other way around.

Who is arguing that smalling was the best defender in Italy last season?
He wasn't. He did well for sure but that's an exaggeration.
Perisic is a lw and would have been a good signing a couple of years ago but we are not short at lw and he is not the force he was.
I agree with manc man. Get players out. But they are of no interest to anybody at the wages they want. Rojo 160k a week jones 120 mata 140 lingard 90 periera and dalot have a chance at 60 and 25k its not ready to find takers. Smalling at least appears to bee trying to get his move and i admire him for that. Same with young. I hope some if not all of them get good moves.
Id like to see them all do well.

A real top RW on top of VDB would make an OK window IMO. A top RW and Telles would make a very good one.

Realistically, I'm hoping for Telles and a decent winger who can rotate with Greenwood on the right. Not sure who. That and a few outgoing would be a good but not outstanding window.

I'm wary of Perisic. Bernardesci looks good, but I haven't watched him all that much. Buendia still looks like a good cheaper option.
