{Ed002's Note - I have explained the situation as it is and the difficulties. There are other options as well.}

Best team he could have started tonight with who he had available. Come on united.

Ashley Young at CB again, with Jones on the bench.

Ole learned nothing from the last match.

Agree2 Disagree7

10 Apr 2019 22:05:22
I didn't think we were that bad. Lacked a cutting edge and Young's a liability.

Agree8 Disagree0

10 Apr 2019 22:06:38
Jones is awfull I would rather Romero play there than Jones he shouldn't be on the bench nm the starting 11.

Agree2 Disagree2

10 Apr 2019 22:10:41
Mort we played well other than the first 15 minutes we hounded them and if we were better in the final phase we could have scored.

Much better when we press high and fast.

Young is awfull most have gave the ball away at least 30 times and for a guy who was a winger he cannot cross a ball.

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - I think that shows the way Ole wants to play. Pressing high up the pitch with high intensity football. We just dont have the team to play that style week in week out}

10 Apr 2019 22:22:10
As I say we lacked a cutting edge. If we make the right signings who knows. Shout out for scotty mctom. Knows there's a place for him with Herrera going.

Agree3 Disagree0

10 Apr 2019 22:26:52
Agreed ed004, the right type of play is there, just not the players to execute it. Young is a massive liability and holds us back so much. We need an actual rb who can drive forward and can actually deliver a half decent cross, it's a joke that Utds captain and first choice rb is a 33 year old washed up average winger, he was poor. Big shoutout to Fred and mctominay who I thought were outstanding with mctominay being motm for me, calm on the ball and it was as if he's played for years. Fred had a couple of off passes but his energy to win the ball back and drive forward was good to see. Worries me however that we managed no shot on target at home. We need a lot more creativity and to create more chances for our attackers who had no service. Again screams the importance of a new fullback and another creative midfielder so pogba doesn't get isolated out the game. Need an attacksr too because our forward line don't score enough. All in all we played ok and are still in the game. Onto the next.

Agree7 Disagree0

10 Apr 2019 22:28:56
Bolger we were ok.
Ddg lindelof dalot mctom and fred were all above average
Pogba smalling and shaw average
Lukaku rash martial jessie all below average
Young was a shambles yet again.

Sanchez gets stick and rightly so but martial gets a pass from some. i'd pick sanchez every time over martial.

Agree2 Disagree9

10 Apr 2019 22:38:47
I thought we played really well.
Shaw needs to work on his positional play.
Fred and Mctominay played really well.
Dalot did well on the left.
Rashford could have played better.
Young can't cross to save his life.

Let's be honest. We subdued Barcelona, not many teams have done that.
It was valiant performance, one to be proud of.

We have areas we need to improve on, but if we play like we did tonight, then we like the players can hold our heads high.

Agree2 Disagree0

10 Apr 2019 22:59:23
Mad hatter we were at home in a cl quarter final and didn't have 1 shout on target for the first time EVER.
Lots of effort that's true lots of dicipline but so little quality no doubt about that.
Nobody was proud of jose teams that parked the bus but we never went through a European game without a shot on target.
So we have had a negative manager
We now have a positive manager
But as jose said all along and most people who know the game.
Managers are not the biggest problem the problem is our players are not as good at football as all other top teams.
Honestly 10 or 12 of this squad could leave and make no impact wherever they go.
I just hope ole is allowed to do the job jose was not allowed to do. Anybody who knows anything about football will tell you that this squad is lacking in quality and needs to b e ripped apart.

Agree2 Disagree5

11 Apr 2019 00:03:49
Well said Ken. Our team is poor and if we have any ambition to return to the top then we have to ruthless and get rid of the player.

I actually believe we are not serious anymore. We are the next Arsenal and as long as we keep making money we are not going to get rid of the players we don't need and buy players we need to return to the top.

Players like Smalling, Jones, Lingard, Young and Lukaku shouldn't be anywhere near the first team.

Then we have players like Pogba who we think is so good but he is pants with the attitude he has. What is the point of having so much ability if you can't do anything with it.

Honestly the only players I would keep is DeGea, Lindelof, Rashford, Dalot and Martial and the rest can jog on.

Lets see what happens in the summer and see if Solsjaer gets backed to get rid of the players we don't need and replace them with top class players.

We have fallen so far behind with the resources we have is ridiculous.

Only caught the last forty minutes as I’m still living in Japan (+8 hours), but I thought we were pretty poor today. Barça weren’t at the races at all today and a half decent team would have put them to the sword. To fail to create a single shot on target at home in a champions league quarter final is a little embarrassing; especially given the cost as which our squad was assembled. I don’t think Ole can at all be blamed, but the players and those responsible for signing them have a lot to answer for. I’m well aware that we were up against Barcelona, but they were a shadow of their usual self today. To hope that that will also be the case next Tuesday in Spain I fear is wishful thinking. A lot of work needed this summer. SM and Fred didn’t play too badly, but Pogba, our forward line and Young didn’t look fit to wear the shirts on their backs. Shaw looked a liability far too often as well. He has a lot of improving to do positionally, although I think most of us new that before this game.

Question for the Eds and fellow fans

What are your thoughts on the current crop of youth players coming through?

I personally feel like this is the best group since the class of 92.

I feel like Gomes, Chong and Greenwood will be pushing for 1st team football next season

The likes of Garner, Laird, Levitt, Williams will be future players to keep a eye on.

Greenwood is personally the best prospect since Ravel Morrison. I expect him to play on the wings at first then gradually move to the centre forward position.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed004's Note - I havent gotten to watch enough of them lately but Ive high hopes for Greenwood, Garner and the young rb for u18 I think his name is Laird. I fully expect Greenwood to play a part next season. I expect Sanchez and Mata to leave with Greenwood promoted and another attacker signed. Chong isnt quick enough to be an elite winger and Gomes is touch and go due to his physicality to}

10 Apr 2019 23:03:32
Good post, and hopefully Tuanzebe comes back as well. I think Chong could make it, such a nice touch and very silky. Hope Gomes gets some more opportunities next season. He does have the talent, just need a position that he can slot into.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Apr 2019 09:24:17
Honestly, I think they all have a good chance of making it professionally but Greenwood has the pace and finishing to make a go of it at United. You need a bit of luck, the opportunity and to take your chance. Chong would benefit from a loan spell in my mind. Gomes too. Not honestly sure on Gomes best position. Seen him okay AL, CDM and CAM at times. Technically gifted but he needs exposure to league matches now in Prem or elsewhere.

Absolutely buzzing for the game tonight! I will admit all week I’ve been a bit down about the game. But this is what football is all about. 2 of the biggest clubs in the world playing under the lights in one of the most iconic stadiums in the world. What’s not to be excited for? Jumping on the train to Manchester and I feel like a kid again.

Amidst all the doom and gloom the past few weeks let’s appreciate the fact we are even in a quarter final of the champions league. Back in November that was a pipe dream. Ole has done this. Yes the last few weeks have been dour. But he’s allowed us to dream again. It’s cup football. Anything can happen. For one night let’s all pull together and get behind these boys. We can do it. No agendas. No negativity. Manchester United is playing on the big stage where it belongs. Let’s seize this opportunity.

Head says 2-1 barca. Heart says 2-1 united. Absolutely buzzing.

Football Comparisons 2 - The Schmeichels

Classy as always.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it was so hard to do, trying to compare a great keeper with an ok keeper and not end up just sounding like a dick denigrating Kasper. If people didn't keep asking about a comparison between the 2 (I am assuming they must have been too young to have seen Peter at his peak), I would never have considered comparing them. Kasper is barely Premier League level, while Peter is one of the best Prem keepers ever.}

mbd

10 Apr 2019 15:26:57
Cant agree more, would have liked to see Van Der Sar vs Peter Schmeichel. That would make for an interesting read and then throw in DdG. Three great keepers of three different Utd Eras. Utd signed VDS a few years too late but yet still he had his best years in the EPL or arguably of his career with utd.

{Ed001's Note - I will add that to the list for the future mate.}

{Ed001's Note - very welcome. Makes a much better comparison, though difficult because they come from different eras.}

Great read as always ed1. Have you thought about a CR7 and Messi comparison. The whole media loves to do that so maybe you too can do yours as well.

As a more serious suggestion what about an Allison and Ederson comparison. It seems to divide opinions even amongst the supporters of their respective clubs.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - added them to the list cheers. No one actually suggested Ronaldo Messi!}

10 Apr 2019 17:04:23
Its always going to be difficult on different eras. The changes in rules, fitness etc.

Another suggestion though. Would there be any interest in great centre back partnerships?

Not comparisons just a writeup. Hanson/ Lawrenson, Adams/ Bould, Bruce/ Pallister. Anyone I've missed. Just domestic or European.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - that's a good idea for another series that. Could spread that to all sorts of sports as well.}

Good Morning Gents
A Liverpool fan in peace!
Just want to wish you lot good luck tonight against Barca.
A lfc v mufc semi final would certainly be one to look forward to.
I hope you get a decent result tonight and against City in the league of course!
Good luck anyways

Good man Tris.
You have 1 foot in the semi and i have you as favs to win the league from here on in.
Id bite your hand off right now for a united Liverpool semi.
If all our players play above their usual standard and Barcelona play below their usual standards and we get a few lucky breaks we can win tonight.
Its a cup game the best team does not all win so we have a punchers chance.

Poor Danny. I hope his teammates get some good mileage off this one.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - poor Danny? He is a multi-millionaire dickhead who would rather drive a dangerous weapon drunk than pay for a taxi. I have no sympathy for him, I have lost friends to ****s like him and I hope he gets the book thrown at him and it smashes him hard in the face.}

10 Apr 2019 15:01:29
It blows my mind how people of such ridiculous levels of wealth make such stupid decisions. Not just a taxi, he could have paid for someone to drive his car home so he didn't have to leave it. There is literally no excuse. I guess he doesn't care about the fine or losing his license because he can always get a chauffeur for a few years til the ban expires and barely notice the change in his bank account.

F**k that guy! He deserves to have the book thrown at him.

I think the post from Danny was tongue in cheek ed1. Or at least I think it was sarcastic. He does have a record of being a bit sarcastic, I think.

{Ed001's Note - oh sorry I never realised.}

10 Apr 2019 17:51:14
Yeah Ed, tongue firmly in cheek. Sorry.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - apologies mate.}

10 Apr 2019 18:47:16
But you are right ed1, he is a Danny, Drinkwater not Pughnited, is a dickhead. Whenever I read these sorts of things the first thing that pops to my mind is what ed2 says about most footballers, specially English ones, they are some of the dumbest ones around and finding a bright footballer is a very rare thing.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - very true. Though I remember FIFA or UEFA used to produce a magazine, not sure if it is still going, and I got given a few copies to look over, the difference in the interviews with British footballers and Eastern European ones was embarrassing. They were clearly highly educated and most of them had as their hero Nikola Tesla. While the Brits would have never even heard of Tesla and always their hero was just someone that made you wonder why on earth?}
