Evening ladies and gents, just wondering how y'all think Jose will line it's up this season?
Last year Jose wanted to move to a 352 but abandoned that claiming he couldn't get the right players (namely perisic) . Since there's only really been rumours of just blind returning to Ajax and no other CBS leaving, and with us being linked to organising leader types joining, do you think Jose will again try 3 at the back?
Personally I think that Ronaldo joining juve makes the Sandro deal more likely so will be a big upgrade down the left and using Shaw as his deputy (assuming he stays) would mean Valencia and young can cover the right side for a season while dalmat is blooded in and adapts. Now I know this is not ideal but I believe young is better on the right anyway and both are reliable enough at least so that Woodward can prioritize other positions this summer.
Also just throwing it out there but what would you guys think of buying Maguire with smalling going the other way cheap? This would be in addition to the experienced CB so is very unlikely but just feel it's a deal that could suit all parties and Maguire kinda reminds me of Bruce n guess I'm just a sucker for nostalgia.

How does us buying Leicester’s best centre half for cheap and giving them Smalling suit all parties? Do you mean it suits United? Why would Leicester agree to that?

I don’t think Young is very good on the right, never seen him have a good game for us there, and who is Dalmat?

Maguire is nowhere near the level required. After this WC fiasco is over (once England play a side better than championship level) then I suspect people will come back down to earth Re the England individual players as well.
Want a WC center back then we should be chasing the Rafa Varane’s of the world.

I think we will we more of the same. Safety first, worry about the opposition first. The interesting thing for me is how Jose reacts if he doesn’t get the players he wants the time. He was clearly disgruntled with some last year, rumours abound that Pogba has been offered to other clubs, he has little faith in Rashford and Martial, Bailly seems to have upset him, Shaw is out of favour, Herrera hardly got a look in last year. That’s a lot of players to have fallen out with or publicly criticised. Without going back to United Addicts England vs United argument, therein lies the main difference.

Robbie,

Bitterest post of Tuesday award goes to you mate, how unfortunate that some people can't just be happy for others and have to do everything down. We are in the World Cup Semi Final, get over it.

Probably with his usual park the bus formation, its time we got back to playing with attacking flair that our fans demand.

If we can get performances like that from pogba week in week out, we would make massive strides as a team. Hopefully the penny has dropped and he wants to become what we know he can be, the best midfield player in the world.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed004's Note - The only issue we have is that Pogba is expected to play like that for us defensively and then be expected to dictate our team play and score goals and don't forget assist. I don't think Pogba will ever be fully accepted by the media in England}

10 Jul 2018 21:13:44
The big part of his game tonight was
No show boating.

10 Jul 2018 21:40:19
Anyone else hear Martin Keown say 'Lukaku hasn't got what it takes to play in a WC final'?, there were literally 10 other Belgium players on the pitch. Every Belgium game he's commentated on, he managed to say something negative against Lukaku. Reminds of the time he called Sanchez a mercenary 200x on his debut vs Yeovil and slaughtered him for giving the ball away all game, ended up giving him MOTM, can't stand the man!

On Pogba, he was very very impressive again; been consistently brilliant this tournament and i feel you're right Ed004, he'll never be accepted by the media in this country, such a shame.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - I've had to listen to friends constantly tell me Pogbas had a poor world cup yet from what I've seen he's probably in contention for team of the tournament. Not even going to get started on the media or I wont stop. The new narrative of Pep or Money is starting to become annoying though}

10 Jul 2018 21:43:15
It helps having world class players constant movement infront of you and also kante being by your side instead of matic who has the mobility of sloth.

Agree4 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - Hopefully Fred can provide a bit more energy beside him. And the likes of Sanchez, Lukaku etc are let of the leash a bit more}

10 Jul 2018 21:43:42
Also, on Pogba; just remembered the time Souness said his best attribute is his athelticism, not his passing, SUMS. IT. UP🤷‍♂️.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - Exactly. He's fighting a losing battle. Especially with the amount of media pundits that blatantly despise United. Doesn't help that Scholes etc like to stick the knife in at every opportunity as well}

10 Jul 2018 21:46:45
Absolutely completely agree Ed 4. Pogba was a giant tonight. He sacrificed himself for the team, was disciplined and the way he tracked Fellaini into the box was brilliant. I haven't seen him play with so much understanding and maturity before.

I wrote a post the other day where I said Pogba is expected to defend like Kante, pass like Scholes and create like Zidane. It's an impossible task. We want him to be our creative spark but also our defensive rock. It's simply unrealistic, unfair and has shattered his confidence.

In defence of Jose (if there is one) I think he wants more of the Pogba we got tonight. Diligent, disciplined, motivated and hard working. The was a WC semi final and Pogba was prepared to roll his sleeves up for the team in order to achieve his dream. Maybe the problems have arisen when Pogba wants more freedom to express himself in league games yet Jose wants performances like tonight on a weekly basis. I can only imagine Jose eulogising about his performance tonight.

There is no doubt Kante's energy and intensity has helped Pogba and from what I've read I think Fred might just be the key we need bring some balance to the team.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - I've just said something similar previously there. Hoping Fred can provide that Kante like energy in midfield beside Pogba. I think our best football has happened when we have had Matic Herrera and Pogba all playing. So hopefully we see a midfield 3 more often this season. I'm not saying Pogba is perfect btw just think the media is overly harsh on him. There'll be no articles on how poor KDB was tonight but if the boots were on the other foot imagine the media reaction if Pogba played like that (for the record think KDB is currently the better player)}

10 Jul 2018 22:02:04
Seen an article on Sky Sports on 'Peps attitude towards youth', based on Zinchenko, a 21yr old who'd already made 50 first team appearances and was signed for £10m yet Jose, if anything, has given more minutes to our youth players but gets slaughtered. Just depends on who the media 'prefer' to be honest.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - Haven't they just sold him? And signed someone who plays in the same position as their break out star Foden? Also think Pep deliberately didn't name a full bench to make a point to the fa when he couldve brought a youngster for the experience}

10 Jul 2018 22:14:00
Yeah I agree again Ed!

Ironically we've seen at this WC that he is actually capable of doing it all. He just needs to find some consistency and we need to decide exactly how we want to use him!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2018 00:47:04
I constantly get told how bad pogba is, mainly from lfc fans who just listen to the bitter old scousers on the tv. It’s so frustrating as he’s got loads of talents. But tonight he dug in for the team, if we can get that commitment from him then he can fulfil his potential.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2018 01:28:19
Much as i do not think martin keown is a top commentator i have to agree with him that lukaku is not a top world class striker, he has all the tools there, but i don't think he has the mental toughness to go to the next level, look at ronaldo, he could have stayed and played to a very good level, but he knew that he could improve and at the time real was that step up he needed;look at lukaku, he's playing to a high standard for sure, but a few have commented in the past he's carrying some extra timber, his ball control could be improved and his positional awareness could be better, so yes you could say i'm being unfair and picky, but if you look again at what ronaldo was like at utd, how he applied himself at madrid mentally and physically, he improved his game unbelievebly, lukaku could do the same but is it in him?

Agree1 Disagree4

11 Jul 2018 06:14:12
So you want Lukaku to play like or be Ronaldo or move the club? He did move from Everton to play at the top level or utd doesn't represent that?

He has improved massively in the last 12 months, then how do you want him to apply himself?

He has been applauded for having a will to learn, working hard, if some things don't improve or happen on the pitch it won't be just because of him, that were his ability ends.

Like Ed004 as said, some players will never win as their fighting loosing battle.

Agree4 Disagree0

11 Jul 2018 10:22:30
I have to agree with the comments on Pogba, and Fred will definitely give him a chance to play the way he should be playing but we are still missing a Matuidi type player, I think Matuidi was the difference in midfield for France.

11 Jul 2018 13:31:04
To be fair to Scholes, he knows what's required at United in the middle of the park, Pogba hasn't turned up in a United shirt for me yet, so hopefully the world cup will have whetted his appetite for us this season.

Is it just me or does anybody else think it's a fantastic piece of business by Real Madrid.

They've just made a profit on a player they paid a world record fee, he's arguably their greatest ever player and all time leading goal at the age of 33!

It was the right time for him to move on, they've just won their third consecutive Champions League and made a profit on a player they've squeezed every inch of talent from who brought them unprecedented success.

At least we can put any rumours of his return to bed now. I think the Italian league will suit him and he'll continue to tear it up there for a couple more years.

Maybe we're just starting to witness the slow decline of the great Ronaldo and Messi and a new era is almost upon us.

DLIB,

Not sure it’s as simple as them ‘making a profit’, but it does appear to be a great deal for them, Ed has always said they had a plan to rebuild their team this season, they are the worst team to win the CL in years, that’s why it’s even more annoying we played so badly against Sevilla, all the teams left were there for the taking and we proved we aren’t even good enough to beat Sevilla.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2018 00:10:38
Hold on a minute DLIB, you mention ronaldo and messi, but no mention of fellaini in the same breath-i just don't get it-surely an oversight on your part! (and how come no-one ever mentions the 'little cantona' djemba djemba, so good they named him twice? -whats the matter with you people?!

Now most fans if asked towards the end of the season to pick the key area of weakness in our squad would have answered with the same answer. Our fullbacks.

It seems common knowledge that Valencia and Young are not ideal options at fullback. Both are converted wingers who ironically struggle with creating chances from open play. They are also both 32/ 33 by the start of next season and clearly cannot go on forever in what is probably the most physically demanding position on the pitch.

And yet the latest rumours are that we might not sign another fullback having already signed Dalot, a player who has played 7 first team games in a much less demanding league. Meaning we will go though next season with more or less the exact same fullbacks and the exact same problems as last season.

Now, we have no way of knowing how accurate these rumours are. At this time of year the media will tell you we are about to sign roughly 1957383 players this summer. Which obviously never happens.

However, maybe we should consider this rumour to be true. After all Mourinho has been at our club for two whole seasons now. This is his fifth transfer window and Dalot is so far the only fullback he has attempted to sign.

Maybe the issues we see with our fullbacks aren't issues with their ability, but them faithfully following the tactics our manager puts forward. After all Young has been far more creative and gets forward far more for England than he does for us.

Mourinho typically likes to have one full back who'll push forward and one who'll stay deep and help protect against counter attacking threats. Even at Madrid where you had Marcelo who practically plays as a winger Mourinho also chose Arbeloa as his RB. A player who'll sit alongside the centre backs.

Mourinho is a pragmatist and a defend first coach, it would be foolish to expect him to want his defenders to be more offensive than defensive.

We may not see any other fullbacks come in as Mourinho may well be very happy with the job our current fullbacks are doing.

Believable6 Unbelievable4

10 Jul 2018 12:34:43
Its maybe because all the top clubs know we want new full backs and they are over pricing their players and is porbably the reason we haven5 signed a top lb yet.

Its more to do with negotiating a reasonable fee to get the deal done as we are still interesrinf in signing Sandro and the only thing holding back is the fee.

Ed has said on the European pages that we are still interested in Alex Sandro. Perhaps we're just trying to move on the likes of Blind and Darmian before moving for him. Especially if wages were an issue for the club earlier in the year.

Agree2 Disagree0

10 Jul 2018 13:43:10
Let’s not forget about guys like fosu mensah and Tunazebe (I know he’s not a full back but has been used there for us) coming back for pre season. Is he giving these guys a chance? Who knows.
Full backs are a tricky position to sign in the modern era with how important they are. Danny rose the price being thrown around is 50 million, Alex Sandro around the same and he’s in the final year of his contract. That amount of money is ridiculous and with FFP applying to us I think it’s too much money to potentially waste.
Unfortunatley we do need upgrades in the full back position, but we have some young talent in fosu mensah, dalot, tuanazebe and I guess we could still consider shaw but I think he’s got no chance unfortunatley.
It will be interesting to see what we do regards the positions.

Agree2 Disagree0

10 Jul 2018 15:29:04
I think the World Cup has shown we've got a strong good squad littered with some very good players.

In my opinion the priority should be trying to sign a RW. I think adding a quality right winger would have the biggest impact on the team. It's become a problem position with no obvious solution. Lingard is better centrally, Mata is often ineffective when deployed wide and beyond that there isn't really anybody else?

I'd like us to target a more traditional wide player. Somebody that stays wide, makes the pitch bigger, somebody willing to beat their man and put quality crosses into the box for Lukaku. This will create more space for the likes of Sanchez, Lingard and Pogba. It will help to reduce congestion in the middle of the park and provide us with a different kind of threat and more ammunition for Lukaku. We've seen at this WC that Lukaku thrives from quality deliveries into the box.

Whilst I think it would be a mistake not to target a RW if one wasn't forthcoming I would even consider playing Ashley Young in that position. Cue the sniggers and laughter but just hear me out. He's probably the best crosser at the Club and his job would predominantly be to offer width and provide crosses for Lukaku. He still possesses decent pace and dribbling ability. He works tirelessly, is positionally astute and is able to follow instructions. I know I've probably lost most of you already but I think we just need some balance on the right and it may just release the likes of Pogba, Sanchez and Lingard whilst providing Lukaku with more opportunities.

Failing that we need new full backs that can overlap and cross a ball! Come full circle with that post. I fear I may have just committed football banter suicide 😂.

Saw something similar caolan. It seems Jose wants the players but the board/ glazers are not backing him. They seem content with top 4 and making money. The manager wants to win but the owners only care about the bottom line. A very sad representation of our current predicament if true. If Jose does not get the players he wants I can see it going tits up and he may walk by Xmas. I expect him to settle some scores on the way out as well. We look to becoming the new arsenal. Making money and securing top 4. Showing a lack of ambition or no real strategy in the transfer market. I hope it is all paper talk and perhaps one of the Eds can enlighten us?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any issue at this time. The club will resist spending large sums on aging players. The club also have to be aware of the FFP limitations they need to abide to in respect of wages.}

10 Jul 2018 11:35:36
Thanks very much for the response ed. Sounds like a sensible strategy In not spending large sums on aging players. Is it a case of players need to leave before players can come in?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am not sure I understand the question. The squad is limited by size, adding players means that others need to leave.}

10 Jul 2018 11:44:47
I did read that he’s disappointed with players not having moved on, perhaps this is slowing everything down. Personally I’m surprised blind and Darmian haven’t moved on yet. Fingers crossed there’s not any issues and we have a positive season.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jul 2018 11:50:59
Players moving on isn't just dependant on the players but the club too. I'm sure we could easily sell all the players they club is trying to offload if they slapped a 1m price tag on their head. However, the fans would then complain that the club are selling off players on the cheap.

Agree3 Disagree1

10 Jul 2018 13:33:06
My post doesn’t read to well shappy, I meant it say from what I read he’s not happy with the club when it comes to moving the players on. I understand we want to get good deals, but we have a number of players on big money and like Ed has often stated you either need to be creative or else drop the price. Hopefully we start to see some more progress on transfers, would love to see Alex Sandro and Toby brought in.
