Just something for all you reds to think about, watched today's game . Did anyone notice no number 7 for united Valencia has changed to 22. Could this mean we are getting a new number 7? Could it be CR7 return? I think so. Mark.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Mark,

It was 25 and yes everybody noticed, RTFP!

Agree0 Disagree0

Zaha will get no.7

Happy with the result today. I have a feeling Giggs was only played today because he won't get as much game time when the premier league kicks off. In saying that, he played quite well. Performance wise, we did what we had to do. Anderson came on and did well and it looks like he will be a starter against Swansea. Zaha was a bit off today but the lad will be fine. Everyone else had a pretty solid game and what a professional RVP is on and off the field. His wise head will do wonders for the youngsters in the squad who look up to him.

Lastly, Should we be reading a lot in to Valencia giving up the number 7 shirt? It all seems a bit last minute and with the rumours which were going around previously about the staff at Old Trafford not printing his name with the number 7, it may mean that a signing is imminent. It may well be the number 7 is given to Zaha, but I think that is putting far too much pressure on the boy. Hopefully all is revealed soon.

Quite excited for the coming week as I feel there will be some new faces at Old Trafford. One more week till the big day!

met david may today after the utd game asked him what he thinks about valencia giving up the 7 shirt was it down to pressure?. he gave me a quick answer

'nothing to do with pressure there's a 7 AND 9 coming in'

he smiled and walked off. my heart says ronaldo but brain differs. could the 7 be fellani?

i can't wait for september 2nd I can't handle no more rumours

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I would be gutted if Fellaini got number 7, not worthy of that shirt, if Ronaldo doesn't come back I'd be giving it to RVP, only guy worthy of it at this moment

Agree0 Disagree0

RVP has said that he won't move from 20 because it's not fair on all the fans who have bought his shirt with 20 on the back. True professional.

Agree0 Disagree0

But he was happy to change from 11 to 10 for Arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha Fellaini won't get number 7 you mad? that's reserved for players of Michael Owen's calibre ;)

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

Fellaini won't get 7, I'd be very very shocked if he did. Viva Ronaldo.

Anybody else think Valencia returning to the number 25 could be a sign that moyes is bringing in a new number 7? Or maybe ronaldo is returning, who knows, but the number 7 shirt is now free for somebody to fill it, that much is for sure.

Daz

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Surely fellani cannot be regarded as a marque player to warrant getting the number 7 shirt

Just want to comment on the Rooney saga. How much of it is press related and how much of it is Rooney and Moyes related. I believe that the issue was with SAF and not the club. I also believe that Rooney wanted to train with the reserves and not the first team for fitness reasons. When we have games on a Friday and Sunday we are not going to be doing a strenuous session on the Wednesday and Thursday in case of injury. The reserves will be training harder, he will also have less contact on his shoulder with the reserves. It will be interesting to see how he performs with the reserves. It will also be interesting to see if he makes the bench for Swansea, if he does, he will definitely he staying as we aren't going to put a departing player in a travelling team.

I also think that Rooney said to SAF 'you might as well sell me if you won't play me'. This is totally different to him saying I want to leave. I think SAF did stir it, he was leaving so he could try to have the last laugh with Rooney without repercussions.

I do think that Rooney can be important for us, he needs to get fit and he needs game time. But what he needs to do most is make a statement. He needs to call a press conference and categorically explain everything to the fans - not being bitchy or dragging SAF's name through the mud. He needs to say that he never asked to leave, that he had fitness problems, that he has no problems with Moyes and that he wants to stay. This is the only way back for him (performances will also win us back over).

That's my last post on here for a couple of weeks now boys, off for a nice holiday in France! I hope the posters and all the ed's remain well and that I come back to a happy forum with plenty of signings! Take care all! {Ed007's Note - Have a nice holiday Fresh.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

There are non so blind as those who cannot sea. Wake up and smell the coffee Fresh all he has to do is come out and make one statement saying he wants to stay. His silence is deafening

Agree0 Disagree0

Kloot, What Rooney asked for was a retraction of the statement made to the press by SAF, that he did NOT, repeat did NOT ask for a transfer. Your saying " all Rooney needs to do is make a statement saying he wants to stay at the club ". Why? Why does Rooney have to make a statement about anything. The press have printed all this crap to sell copies. If a player had to come out and make a statement every time the press printed spurious gossip, we would be having dozens of press conferences A DAY! The only time I want a statement from Wayne Rooney, is the day he puts in a transfer request. Then I would want to know why.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with KLOOT to be honest, also SAF would not say Wayne wants to leave to have 'the last laugh without repercussions' he's not a child. If he did say that maybe with an idea of getting rid of Rooney it's most likely to free up the wage bill for a big player coming in. But guess we'll wait and see won't we?

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

Annie,

I am getting a little concerned with how blinkered people are about Rooney. The man is treating our club like dirt. I don't often agree with kloot and we banter a lot but on this occasion he is 100% correct.

Yes people do not need to come out and make statements about everything the press say BUT this is in the newspaper every single day, and could all be stopped by one press conference or even just a tweet by Rooney saying he loves the club and wants to stay. A certain cesc fabregas did that a few days ago and I haven't seen one story about him since.

The fact Rooney won't do that (which he would if what the papers were saying wasn't true because he would be so upset and wanting to defend himself) like kloot said, speaks volumes. I know that people defend him because they worry about the club if he leaves, but Manchester United is and always will be bigger and better than Wayne Rooney.

Agree0 Disagree0

What a load of rubbish ozwald. Free up the wage bill for someone coming in?! If rooney goes, then we need to bring in another world class player, and what are we going to pay the new signing, 10 shillings a week? We are man United for christ sake, we should set our standards higher than wanting to free up wage bills!

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozwald, whilst I agree about rooney I don't about SAF he does act childish when anybody goes against them he throws his toys out of the pram and kicks them out no matter how good they still are (stam) it was always his ball and if you didt play the way he wanted you to he would take his ball away. dave

That's exactly what Fergie did, I parting gift from Rooney's antics a couple of years ago.

Lets take an objective look at our current squad and how it compares to our rivals. First starting with our rivals.

City: I wouldn't say that they have world class players in each position, but at the very least they have good players in each position. Aguero, Hart, Kompany, Yaya Toure and David Silva are definitely the stand out players. They are the key players that I would define as world class that would not be out of place in any team. The rest are all good players but they do have weaknesses like all their other centre backs apart from Kompany.

Chelsea: Oscar, Hazard, Mata, Ramires, Cole, Cech are their world class players. Their strikers aren't too much of a worry. They have plenty of good players: Schurlle, Lampard, Ba, Ivanovic etc.

As for us, who in our squad is world class?

De Gea, Vidic, RVP, Carrick and a fully fit Rooney are without a shadow of a doubt some of the worlds finest. Rafael and Kagawa are bordering on that level and Evra once was the very best. If he can keep up todays form then there is no reason why he can't be an asset instead of a weakness. I think the pattern in our rivals is that in each section of the field, they have a world class player - and actually we do too. It is also true that we have depth, but we don't have quite so much quality at times especially in midfield. With the additions of a defensive midfielder and a creative midfielder that will all change.

Just one more point, Valencia looked good today. He was running at players and got some good balls in, he's back to his number 25 and I think he will feel more comfortable with less pressure. I think we can expect his 2011 form again.

Overall, I think we are 2 players away from European challenging team. To do that though, everyone needs to perform as best they can, Evra needs to be fully on his game with no lapses and we need a commited and fit Rooney. If we get that and also successfully employ Moyes tactics of a high work rate, hunting the ball down in packs, pressing and backing each other up when we have the ball then we will still be a top team. I think under Moyes we will actually keep the ball better and win it back better as a unit. We will also be more flexible formation wise which is a must. Moyes is trying, give him time to make his changes and get his signings.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ramires world class?

Agree0 Disagree0

I would highly rate Ramires and would love him here at United.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not keen on Ramires.

Agree0 Disagree0

G.A.G.U.S

Ramires is far better than Ando and Cleverly together. So I rate him highly too!

Agree0 Disagree0

Two midfielders will be good, but we need to modernise our style of play. We are two sloppy and slow in possession. And generally, our play is lethargic and predictable.
Its up to Moyes and coaching staff to change that.
Nomidfield

Agree0 Disagree0

Ramires is top quality the only reason he ain't in Brazil's starting line up is because he missed a call up and attended a family function rather then joining the national team, Add De Bruyne to that list he is a diamond would easily get into the majority if Premiership teams was Dortmunds first choice to replace Goetze.

Raymond

Agree0 Disagree0

Ramires always scares me when we play Chelsea, wouldn't say World Class but he is a top player.

I'm sick and tired of people writing negative things about today saying we were poor etc, we dominated the game from start to finish and people will say is only Wigan and yes they might not be the best team about but we can only beat what is in front of us so don't blame moyes or the team for that, your negativity will spread across fans which in a game spreads to players and we start to play bad, the season is almost upon us we need to get behind put team and have faith in them even of things go bad get even more behind them

Must say I was very impressed with the reaction of DM and his staff at the final whistle. They all shook hands with each other, showing a togetherness and a commitment to share in the successes and failures. A nice touch.

DL10

Believable0 Unbelievable0

One of the most bizzare things I have ever read you are impressed because they shook hands with each other. You need to go out and get laid or get wasted

Agree0 Disagree0

Why are you so upset by someone admiring and aknowledging a good sense of team spirit running through the staff and team? It sure beats the alternative. where you also upset that Vidic gave the trophy straight to Moyes? Too much togetherness for you?

We didn't really learn much about last seasons players today. Giggs was probably able to play at that pace, a pre season friendly against lower league opposition pace, but if he is first choice we will have major issues this season. However I don't expect him to be. Cleverley remains a good squad player who flatters to deceive and Welbeck doesn't present any danger to the opposition. Zaha looked ok but unsure whether to try and beat players or pass, he will be interesting as long as not overused this season but Ronaldo he isnt.

Overall I did note that we played out from the back better than before even taking the opposition standard into account. We supported the player with the ball better and were closer giving more options to pass, notable close triangles so the person with the ball had two options as we moved up the park. It was more noticeable than last season where often the person with the ball would have to look a lot further away to find a colleague.

Lastly I hope you can all see what some are trying to do with Rooney. Jose wants him and some journalists appear almost to want to destabilise United and get Rooney to Chelsea. Note the PFA said it was almost impossible for Suarez to leave Liverpool, Liverpool say he is going nowhere and its accepted but when Moyes keeps saying Rooney isn't leaving they don't accept it. Daily we read articles and listen to radio presenters suggesting United shoud give Rooney his transfer to Chelsea. Despite what Moyes says they carry the discussion on and will ask Moyes again, twist every angle. You wonder what the driver is for what now almost seems a campaign to get Rooney out of Old Trafford to Chelsea and who might be feeding the frenzy, then you realise what a destabilising effect it would have on us plus the special one would likely win the league. The thing is they have column inches to fill and think of all the column inches and radio shows they could fill about how United had handed Chelsea the league, how great Mourinho is, how United had been broken by Chelseas power, that London was at last the centre of football. We have to remember how many want our empire to fall. I genuinely hope that United hold firm and do not sell him there at any price. If they do hold firm and given Moyes statements it would be poor now if they sold him to Chelsea or anyone, then Rooney has a decision to make about his future. If he hands in a transfer request it will alienate him if the club don't sell him. Therefore he may need to make a statement about his future soon. You may not like Rooney but selling him to a major rival would be a devastating mistake for so many reasons.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Would it not though in the long run be better to cash in?

Rooney obviously wants to go and what do we gain by forcing him to stay?

If he does eventually request a transfer and we refuse it, then he's just going to sulk and stink out the dressing room.

That would be more damaging than just packing his bags.

Of course the London based media, filled with all the glory hunting scouse fan writers want to destroy us, they've been trying for 20 years.

Who says that if they sign Rooney they automatically win the league. 10 months is a long time and a lot of things can happen.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney would sign an extension tomorrow if the club paid him what he wants. I am glad the club are holding firm and I hope they do not give into his demands this time round. There is no guarantee Rooney will improve on last year's form. He could be a real problem for DM next season too due to their flawed relationship. I'm sure there isn't anyone on this page who thinks Rooney deserves an improved contract?

MU will not want him to go into his final two years unhappy and they will not want him to go to Chelsea so there is a big decision to make over the next fortnight. Ideally the club would have sold to PSG, but he will insist on moving to London. Personally I think MU will sell to Chelsea for around the £35m mark. What do you think they will do Red Man? And what do you think they should do?

Agree0 Disagree0

I noticed that our style of play was slightly different from last season. It was hard to discern what sort of formation we were using; but at a guess, it seemed like a fluid 4222 system.

I thought our passing was very good. Very good in tight spaces; and there seemed to be a nice fluidity to the team.

I think if you add Nani and Kagawa to that line up - at the expense of Giggs and Zaha - and I think that might be next weeks line-up - injuries and new signings pending.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney

Moyes has made a definitive statement, if they now sell Rooney no one would trust what Moyes said in future. I think he may have to stay.

They should not sell to Chelsea under any circumstances. Sell him abroad if absolutely necessary.

I would keep him unless his relationship has completely broken down but if he goes then only abroad.

Agree0 Disagree0

If Rooney signs for Chelsea then so be it. Based upon his form and fitness last season £35m would be a fantastic sale for us. The key is not who we sell him to but how we use the money we get for him. Today's game showed just how much we need two new midfielders and, perhaps another striker as Welbeck doesn't inspire confidence.

Agree0 Disagree0

In an ideal world Rooney would declare his love for the club & sign a new contract for reduced wages proving his commitment & desire. I still believe he's one the best players in the league & if he's at Chelsea with Jose telling him he's the worlds best I think it could be very damaging for us. That said of they offer 40 mill I think we should take, I can see him being a rotten apple in the dressing room. I do however think he needs replacing with class, Kagawa is awesome when he's on but he's never going to chip in with goals in the way Rooney does (playing good or bad). Problem is, who replaces him?

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney obviously wants to leave? Have you spoken to him personally? All your doing is reading the tittle tattle in the papers, UNTIL Rooney hands in a transfer request there is no decision for Moyes to make. We read in the papers that Buttner wants to leave, it turns out that was BS too. It was also written in the press that the players had turned against Rooney, ALSO BS. Rooney trying to hold the club to ransom? He hasn`t been offered a contract extension so how is he holding the club to ransome. Rooney ask for SAFs statement to be retracted because he DIDN`T ask for a transfer that wasn`t done. Sell Rooney at your peril. rant over. All the negatives on here are outrageous, Moyes WILL do a job for this club and believe me at least one MARQUEE signing IS coming along with another 2 players to strengthen the team. FACT!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Red Man, like SAF said Ronaldo wouldn't be sold. It means nothing. It's a way of driving the price up or scaring Rooney into accepting a lower contract offer. Rooney in all likeliness will join Chelsea for around £35m. He has no interest of moving abroad and we cannot force him to move abroad. Rooney's relationship with SAF was strained and Rooney's relationship with Moyes is probably worse. It can only end one way sadly. And I will not blame MU for any of it.

Agree0 Disagree0

What if Rooney has totally fallen out with everyone at United and there is no chance of repairing the damage, But he point blank refuses to move abroad and is willing to sit out the rest of his contract and just cause trouble until he gets his move to chelsea. What would you do then?

Agree0 Disagree0

Lol
Everyone gives an opinion syd gives you the 100% fact .
Syd how can you possibly know that Rooney would sign a contract at United tomorrow.
I don't think anybody really knows what's going on at United in regards to Rooney but I would be quite surprised if this is Rooneys way of getting an improved contract,
Jred

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, because he's never threatened to join a rival unless we give him more cash before has he? It's a contract negotiation, he wants X amount of cash, the club have another figure in mind and they cannot find a middle ground. It's how it works.

Sorry I have upset you over my comments about St Rooney.

He's far from a saint but I think this is about more than just trying to get a new deal

Thought was a decent enough display in spells, it was clear as crystal where our weakness is if we can address that we will be more than ok.I was pleasantly surprised with Evra today thought he was superb, maybe thinking Baines is coming is having a positive effect on him? this is only my expectation but I think Fellaini will be announced within the next 48hrs and hopefully we are looking for someone a little more creative too, on a seperate note is there a club on earth who would not want RVP in their side what a player he also seems to have completely bought into the ethos of our club. legend in the making:)

I'm glad we won, and I have said that we were uninspiring in victory, for me, that's enough said. So the big question is, who is this player we are close to signing? I am betting any money that it is Fellaini. I'd also love to know if we plan to fill the number 7 or 9 shirts anytime soon!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

In relation to it being unconvincing. A) It was against Wigan, who even by their standards were poor, especially in the first half hour meaning we hardly had to get out of second gear, and B) it was just a glorified friendly. As all other friendlies, the game lacked the intensity and bite that a competitive game would. Expect a much higher intensity away at Swansea next week. Overall a solid performance, set pieces looked shaky at times but a good base to start the season.

With the news about Fabregas this week, United obviously need to look elsewhere. I think the most probable signing in the midfield is now Marouane Fellaini, Firstly who agrees that he could be the big player in the centre of the park (Our Yaya Toure) that we have been crying out for? And secondly, how does it take so long for United to do a deal as surely Moyes will have his targets in mind already? We need David Gill back in my opinion as I believe Ed Woodward currently lacks authority and the knowledge that Gill had when attracting players.

He is a battler and will get stuck in, all we need is fellani and baines and I will be very happy, I would like nani to get another go in the lineup. Why are we focusing on these big name signings, as nice as they would be there doesn't seem to be any to likely to come off. Also we are Manchester United, we are known for sorting talent and turning it world class.

Due to this I think we should go for the cheaper signings. We need a little pitbull in the middle who isn't afraid to put in a challenge. Due to this I think we should go for Jordy Classie. Young cheap and could produce a strong Dutch link with buttner himself and RVP

" I didn't fall out with Wayne, " said Moyes. "He trained with the reserves by his own request. Anybody who wrote anything else was misleading their readers.

"I'm quite enjoying talking about Wayne because so many of you are getting it wrong. He will not be sold.

"I want him to join up with England. He trained with us yesterday but he's not ready, you'll probably see that on Wednesday. He's had no football . Agree0 Disagree0

Kagawa isn't a Moyes type player? he's a very similar player to Osman or Pienaar? Small technically gifted players with an eye for a pass that will work hard defensively also. Moyes favoured type of player playing behind a striker. therefore he fits perfectly into the United system under Moyes. As he did playing in a similar formation at Dortmund

Ed do you think its just a case of Valencia feeling too much pressure of the number 7 jersey or are we going to sign a big name player who want number 7?

Ronaldo - 7 - Not completely impossible but doesn't look likely
Suarez - 7 - No way
Modric - 14(Spurs) - 10(Croatia) - 19(Madrid) - Looks more likely than others
Di Maria - 7(Argentina) - 22(Madrid) - Its possible that Di Maria would want that number 7 jersey.

Could it be Di Maria? {Ed007's Note - I think you are getting a bit too caught up in shirt numbers.}

Before everyone goes all Ronaldo's coming home, take a second to think. Maybe Valencia gave up the no.7 shirt, he demanded it in the first place and he has been very critical of his performances last season and believes he does not deserve it any more, or maybe he is superstitious, you never know, just be rational guys ;)

Well that was fairly uninspiring but a win is a win I suppose. We picked up a bit after the subs came on. Dread to think what would happen if RVP or Carrick got injured, we would be in real trouble.
Why oh why oh why do we keep picking Giggs and Cleverley, it's just beyond me when we have Kagawa sitting there, even Anderson was an improvement when he came on and that's saying something.
Some good stuff from Zaha and good to see Januzaj on and even Toni looked fairly sharp.
Fairly pleased overall but the cheque book really needs to come out.
A mate of mine said why don't we sign Gareth Barry, weren't sure whether to laugh or cry as he would probably be an improvement on what we have.
Anyway good luck to Wigan this season, have always had a soft spot for them but don't like their lump it up to Holt approach, he is such a bad player and a total cretin to boot.Gets paid to wrestle with opponents.

Yeah its irritating we haven't signed anyone, but moaning about the players who were selected changes absolutely nowt.

To everyone speculating about Valencia not wearing no.7 and linking it to a transfer. Valencia asked to change number himself, this has been coming since Christmas last. It's not transfer related.

RedDub

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If he had asked to change at Christmas time, why did he wear No.7 against Sevilla on Friday?

I just think (hope) that transfer activity could have inspired this. {Ed007's Note - Was the team maybe numbered with the traditional 1-11 on Friday?}

Yes he's 39 but if you didn't recognise his quality today you need to go back to preschool, yes we need a midfielder but I wish more of our players played with the concentration and desire that Ryan Giggs does. Not to mention he is still better than a lot of players out there.

Well that was exciting.Edge of my seat is worn out! If we don't sign a couple of decent players to improve our starting 11 we are in trouble this season. They don't even need to be 'world class' as many of you are demanding. World class is a term used too loosely these days, but what we need is

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Shut up! Christ on a bike. We won, what more do you want? Wigan have a better team than last season & they took some real scalps last term. We got the result, onwards & upwards.

Agree0 Disagree0

This was just a reasonable performance.
I would not read too much into it. Firstly it was at Wembley and the atmosphere was distinctly average. Secondly it was not our strongest team that we played.
Having said that I would like to see some more excitement too. Lingard and Junazaj should get more playing time and it would have been good to see Buttner get a run out. As a positive both Zaha and Welbeck played well as did Carrick, Vidic and Evra. One or two name signings would also help - I'm thinking Baines and Bale. Giggsy will be more of a coach than a player this season.

Well, from what I have seen pre season and in the first 45 mins today, I would say that what we are missing is a real quality CM instead of Cleverley and the same but on the left hand side. PERSONALLY, I think if we got those 2 players we would be in a very good position this season. Yes, we would like Evra replaced and ideally a striker to replace Rooney, but I don't PERSONALLY think they are essential this summer.

If we could get a Gundogan/Vidal in at CM and someone like Draxler on the left, we would be in a great position especially with Januzaj, Lingard, the Keanes, Henriquez etc coming through. Then next summer we would replace Evra and find long term replacements for Carrick and Van Persie I'd guess.

I'll get slated no doubt as our squad/1st team are obviously rubbish going by what people on here say and we need to spend £150m at least. We should really be expecting a relegation fight from reading the posts on here, anything else is going to be a bonus now I guess :-)

Brendan81

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Good post and I agree just those 2 additions would give us a real chance. Trouble is, I think both Vidal and Gundogan are almost unattainable this summer so if that's the case I hope we have other options. I'm a big Modric fan but he lacks a bit of bite that the other 2 offer. Would still be a big upgrade though.

I'd love to get Baines in for Evra but we could probably cope for 1 more season if it meant getting a top CM and LW. Evra actually looked good today but granted he didn't have to do much defending.

Agree0 Disagree0

HB i'd like Baines now too but i'd rather give Shaw another year and then put in an offer to good to refuse next summer, great player and young. Rather pay £20m+ if he has another good season, than around the same on a much older Baines personally. If we went for Modric I would probably spend an extra £8.5m for Kondogbia, worth every penny in my eyes.

Just been looking at some other posts and replies etc and feel there is way to much BS flying around.

I feel we've been made to look very amature like in this window. The whole Thiago and Fabregas saga was a complete embarrassment and now supposedly in for Modric? Why when like someone else said he's turned us down countless times before! As for looking at other Madrid players. Real are definitely going to be over run with wingers once the Bale deal eventually goes through. As much as Ronaldo coming home would absolutely delight me. I can't see it happening. The young Spanish winter someone else mentioned (whose name escapes me) I believe will stay at Madrid. For me I wouldn't mind Di Maria especially as he is a left sided player! I think continued bids for Baines and Fellaini will continue and we will probably sign both for hugely inflated prices! We should have gone all out straight away for Jovetic and Thiago in my opinion!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't want to sound miserable, but we really are playing some uninspiring football. It's SO boring and unimaginative. We have good technical players in RVP, Kagawa and one or two others, but we desperately need one of Fabregas, Modric or Cabaye. Personally I hope we grab one of those and then Gundogan next season.

Wow! Giggs, Giggs! As player/ Coach, I think he shouldn't be playing much this season. Since he still wants to play and he belongs to this team, I respect that. But himself and Moyes must be careful when giving the younger guys an opportunity.

We have to preserve the future of this kids and not get stuck on the past. Don't get me wrong, Giggs is not a bad player, but I don't think he should play much this season ahead of Kagawa or Januzaj. Some games his experience will be needed, I know that too.

I have to agree with what has been said by some of the pundits on ITV have said. Firstly, Keane is right in that we should let Rooney go if he wants to. It is also true that it is a bit of a joke that Giggs, who is now a player coach, is first choice . He's 40 for god sake. Player coaches are the sorts of things that Barnet use, I'm not saying Giggs is bad, but he should play a few games per season max, not still be first choice and start games. We really need one of two midfielders.

Other than that, like the formation, I would be happy to play this a lot this season if we could get one or two more midfielders. Kagawa could play in a front 3 as the deepest lying anyway so it would be good.

I think it will be:

De Gea, Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Kagawa, Carrick, Jones, Zaha, RVP, Young.

Probably in a 4-3-3 / 4-4-1-1.

Agree0 Disagree0

I believe it will be DDG, Rafael, Vidic, Jones, Evra, Carrick, Giggs, Zaha, Kagawa, Welbeck, RVP. (Mark it down) But its possible that he plays another CM (ando), and pushes Giggs forward into either Welbeck or Zaha's attacking spot. Hope not, let's score some goals and win a trophy!

--RvP--

Might see Giggs start though, would like to see Januzaj start because he's not had a single bad game thus far but think Moyes will go with more experience. Maybe Welbeck on the right, Kagawa in the centre then Giggs on the left.

Heard we at least made enquiries about Vidal, and were told no, that's a positive in a way cause he is exactly what we need. Gustavo could do a good job for us but would need a playmaker too so IF we are really after Modric would be great ( I doubt he'd want to leave Real though) . So in short i'd be happy with a left back and Gustavo and let the young talents we have develop, would probably a couple of lean years trophy wise but we should still be top 4 and give the youngsters invaluable European experience.

Woodward was spectacularly successful bringing in sponsorship deals but in doing so has created a level of expectation commercially in his new role that should bring transfers into sharp focus.

RedMan, Woodward wasn't responsible for generating sponsorship income - his background is in corporate finance (he's a banker in other words). He was an adviser to the Glazers when they bought into the club, got invited onto the board and, surprise surprise, got promoted to CEO when Gill went. Perhaps this explains our clueless approach to transfers this summer.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Noname

What do you think sponsorship is other than financing United's corporate body? Corporate finance is NOT the same as banking.

My understanding is that Woodward was an integral part of the team that's sought and negotiated United's recent sponsorship deals. These are huge undertakings and will be delivered by multiple people (and multiple lawyers).

Sponsorship deals and transfer deals aren't the same thing, so there's no guarantee that just because he can do the former that he can do the latter.

However, I suspect our fault this summer may have been not lining up our back-up targets as well as we should, given the complexity and size of our prime targets (Fabregas and Ronaldo). Equally, it's not September 2nd yet. There's plenty of time for things to finish.

Agree0 Disagree0

To the no name

Can I recommend checking what Woodward has been doing before posting. In 2007 he assumed responsibility for the commercial and media operations and developed and implemented a new overall commercial strategy for the club. This resulted in a new structured approach to commercialising the brand, including developing the sponsorship strategy, led out of the London office.

I've been feeling a bit unloved at work so I'm going to call in sick for a while. Sadly, I'm likely not to get paid and possibly sacked, especially oif I can't prove I'm sick. And I don't earn over £200K per week. It's all, well, and good the owners digging their heels in and yes yes, I know we will need to replace him, but it's time for Wayne to take his over inflated opinion of himself off to neither club. It's sad that it has come to this but the root of it lies in the 'lacks ambition' transfer request. He could have been the next Captain, he could have broken all the records, he could have been a legend. Sadly, for reasons best known to him and his agent it is not to be.

I so wanted to be a liverpool fan growing up the team they had was winning everything, I thought I had the misfortune of a father who supported manchester united, my father insisted I became a manchester united fan and that's what happened.manchester united was a club that dreamt of the league but the fans knew the fa cup was the best chance of silverware and we had some success in that competition.I was 19 years old before we won the premiership for the 1st time in the 92/93 season and the emotion from the wait of all those years without the title is something I will never forget.Manchester united have rode the crest of the wave thanks to sir alex fergusons genius ever since. This post is directed at all the negative posters on this site who in all probability have never known anything else get over yourselves and stop boring the rest of us who know better.I still think this team and management will strive forward to more success.

dear mr nellym
ngiak may have a similar story to you
late 70s and 80s were hell
but a little penguin saw the badge, saw the red devil, saw the sleeping giant underdog and saw the swashbuckling style
his flippers, heart and soul were convinced for life
the wheel seems to be turning yet another cycle
on one hand, dear sir, you are right
ngiak is embarrassed to have fellow fickle minded fans like these
but on the other
ngiak also sees the fear and pain and the desperation in the voices of the die hards
this is the stuff of the Manchester United forum
ngiak thinks we are spoilt by success
ngiak also thinks we have success in our blood
the voice of the fans need to be heard - good or bad
cos we certainly are a part of the club and the history
but when the season starts
ngiak believes
the voices now have to be directed towards and for. the team and the manager
we and the club are vulnerable. but we the fans must shoulder the responsibility of carrying the club until mr david moyes and the youngsters find their feet
ngiak asks.
can you "so called" Manchester United football club fans
stand up together and show the pride and the prestige and the ethos of the club
stand up and be counted in the club's hour of need

Totally agree, my first final was 76 followed by the high of 77 beating the scousers
Robson arrived and we progressed but I will remember the 93 season as long as I live and for me that was the high followed by unbelievable 99
We have been spoilt by fergie
Get behind the team come what may
United we stand
Big kev

"Club's hour of need"? Seriously?

This is exactly what I've been saying about everyone being melodramatic. The club had a real, genuine hour of need in 1958 - a point where it may not even have continued if it hadn't been for the efforts of Jimmy Murphy.

And here we all are, the summer after we've won the league, talking about crisis points and disaster and hours of need. I agree we all need to get behind the new manager, but so much of the banter on these pages has lost any sense of perspective it's untrue.

Well said DarkLard, some people have gone off the deep end.

First time poster here. Just a quick word to the eds for doing such a great job. Keep up the good work!

First things first! I have never felt so excited yet so nervous at the beginning of a new season. I think tomorrow will give a very good indication of how we will shape up come the first day of the premier league season. I personally, can not wait!

Now I understand some of the fans disappointment with there being no major activity in the transfer market, BUT the negativity of the some of the fans is ridiculous. I believe we will make some signings, and whoever we do bring in, WILL improve our squad. As fans of this great and historic club, we should be supporting and backing the new regime as much as possible, rather than doubting everything we have done so far in pre-season. Yes pre season. Has it occurred to some of you that the season is yet to start? Give Mr Moyes a chance before opening your mouths and being so harsh and negative!

Although we did win the league by a mile in the end, our football was not to the standard we expected it. I believe Moyes will address this and we will see much better football being played this season. We may or may not win the title but we will make steps in becoming a much better footballing side. This will help us in Europe especially, as some of our performances in the champions league recently, barring Madrid last season, have been quite poor. Do not underestimate Moyes. He is a proper student of the game and has gone out of his way to learn as much as he can about it. I read an article recently where he talked about trying to get funding from the PFA to go to the 98 world cup and learn more about the game by watching how teams take their training sessions. In the end, only the Scotland manager gave him access but he still took the opportunity to gain as much knowledge as he could. You can see why Sir Alex has picked Moyes. Brining in Mourinho or Pep would have only been good for the short term. We need to have long term success and do the things the United way. He gives youth a chance and gets the best out of his players. With a stronger squad to manage now, it will be very interesting to see what he can do. Again, as fans we should give him a proper chance. Voice your opinions after the end of the new season and see where we are at.

In regards to Rooney, I really don't know if he will stay or go. I am certain however, that he will not be sold without a big signing coming in first. I will be very surprised if we sell him and do not buy anyone. If he stays, great! If he goes, good luck. We are bigger than one player and we have always had this stance in the past, why change now? I am glad we were bidding for the likes of Fabregas. It shows Moyes has identified midfield as our weak spot and has gone all out to fix it. If in the end we sign Fellaini, Baines and one more player, whoever it may be, we will go some way to improving out first eleven.

Eagerly awaiting tomorrows game! Come on United! Win, lose or draw, get behind our team!
