Van persie is injured, so what happens now with falco does he apologise or does van gal, whoever and whatever happens now there is tension in the camp and tension is bad for a team, lvg jog on back to holland.i just don't think he is for Manchester United, I tried to like him and give him a chance but he has to go.

Believable4 Unbelievable3

Lvg has a choice play falcao up top or stick fellaini up there .

Agree0 Disagree1

12 Jan 2015 23:28:15
Falcao simply has to play. Simple as that.
If he doesn't LVG is clearly putting himself before the club which, in my opinion, is a sackable offence.

Not calling for him to be sacked, just think this is a pivotal choice for how people will look at his tenure at Manchester United.

Agree0 Disagree1

12 jan 2015 23:50:02
oh my god the overreaction to yesterday is crazy, once again nobody walking out of the stadium or sat around me at the stadium even mentioned sacking lvg, they would have been laughed at, but on here people are calling for him to be sacked after one defeat in 13. alright we aren't playing how you would like but for god sake give the guy a break, it's embarrassing to see the turnaround.

if mata had out the open net chance in like he should have done and we drew yesterday nobody would be saying sack lvg (except beast), the overreaction is worrying.

Agree3 Disagree2

13 Jan 2015 00:05:14
To be fair GDS, I did't say we should sack him.
He has to do what's best for the team, so he has to play Falcao now RVP is injured.
There is no excuse not to see him play when he is fit. He is starting 11 through and through; this is a guy who ruined Chelsea singlehandedly.
I can't believe we're putting Falcao on the bench.

Agree0 Disagree0

I bet Falcao plays on Saturday and scores.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Jan 2015 00:21:34
Gds couldn't agree more this is getting rediculous now

Agree1 Disagree0

Gds
you turning in to a one man band.
I actually don't think yesterday was that bad, we have played a lot worse and won .
I know you don't rate them but imo southampton are a good team, united have issues, imo with the manager and his tactics .
That was a good 11 we put out but koeman was the difference.
All yesterday done was highlight what myself and others have been saying .

Agree0 Disagree1

If a manager loses the dressing room the team is in trouble, at a top club like united you need man management skills van gal doesn't have, fergie had that, playing negative football passing the ball backwards and side wards at old Trafford, no shot on target, DDg has us in fourth place no one else, 5 at the back, we have to attack teams at home, the negative football is coming from the manager as he is telling the players what to do.i can't see him changing cause he is stubborn.i can't see us finishing in the top 4.

Agree2 Disagree2

The thing is GDS improvements on performances must happen. Getting results is fantastic but we are Manchester United, the pinnacle of football, we have to play attractively and win ruthlessly.

Look at Mourinho at Madrid for instance. Won silverware, played poor football, lost the fans with grinding out result based performances, lost the players with his anti-footballing tactics and lost his job.

It's a cut throat industry but so is all industry's when you earn seven figures a year.

Agree3 Disagree1

13 Jan 2015 02:47:25
GDS, the problem is, we shouldn't have to be relying on one chance to win a game of football at home.

Agree3 Disagree0

Sunday was a watershed moment for me when nearly all the players were available. LvG played a world class left midfield player, who was brilliant at bursting forward, as a striker and Rooney in midfield. He played three at the back in a too defensive team. For me he played tactics with Koeman and came second best. LvG has to improve on Sundays performance and the recent insipid displays or he will be in trouble at the end of the season if we miss top four. The Falcao situation was bizarre and watching us struggle scoring goals is a concern, LvG seems more concerned with finding a rigid team structure than scoring.
We will find out if he can change because if he ploughs on with 352 he may be in trouble and that is from someone who hasn't fallen to the dark side with him. Sunday was a watershed moment given his team selection, he has to drive improvement and better balance now.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Jan 2015 09:22:30
Red Man,

I agree, I think he made a few mistakes on Sunday, but he can be forgiven a few mistakes, all managers make them, a new man coming in would make mistakes as well, but we can't just sack him.

Covey, my post was aimed at Leahy's 'jog on back to Holland' comment.

jred, I am not a one man band as people are agreeing with me, and I agree with the rest of your post, I have said on many occasions I agree with your opinion and Sunday did highlight a few issues. Maybe the decent results have been masking the issues for the manager too, he has said himself that performance matters, so it is now up to him to sort that out, an overreaction like we have seen on here after one defeat helps nobody.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 20:41:18
Did anyone else on here think the irish girl should have got goal of the year.and David luiz getting on team of the year a joke.

12 Jan 2015 15:41:28
EDs/Guys assuming we do not sign anyone and given that now we have an almost fully fit squad do you think we will finish in top 4 this season?

Another season out of CL would be disastrous.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed004's Note - Yeah we should get top 4 and if not I think LvG will be gone}

12 Jan 2015 19:57:39
Ed 001

I read your post about lvg and his ways, with you saying u would be surprised if he stayed through the summer, could I ask who you would think would be the candidates to replace him, I understand u are a Liverpool fan (forgive me if I'm wrong) but I'd like an honest opinion thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it really depends on who is available. Blanc and Ancelotti could be possibilities.}

12 Jan 2015 19:41:42
If LVG wants to stick to his 5 man defense, then he should sign players suited to it or just change the system.
Half-measure are hurting us dearly.
Go on a 100 mil pound january spree, if it means that gets us in the top 4. We can't miss out on it.
Read somewhere we'll suffer massive losses if we lose out on champions league positions.
If Arsenal were to sign a CB and DM, they'll be stronger.
L'pool would benefit immensely from Sturridge and if he stays fit, they'd be in the running too.
He has to make a decision, stick with the 3-5-2, and buy 1-2 more players that are missing for the formation or change the system. If he doesn't we'd probably miss out again.

In other news david luiz has made the FIFA 11 and therefore is one of the top 2 cb's in world football. And in 3rd place johnny Evans.

They overdo it in training Noucamp in my view, nothing left in the locker.

Maybe something in how much thinking the players have to do as well, half of their energy will be zapped just trying to remember the millimetre of turf they should be on for any given situation. Footballers typically aren't the sharpest tools in the box, so over thinking things leads to fatigue as well as physical exertion. I don't know if this is part of it of course.

The Beast

Beast, fair play to you mate, this just reduced me to tears, literally!
We are all aware of your unwavering hatred of our manager. Some of us don't agree with you, but you are becoming the Pied Piper Of Old Trafford with your ever growing army of fans. But I do have to admire your devotion to the cause.

The above post is one of the funniest I have ever read on here. Basically, you seem to be saying that the reason for the teams' recent fatigue, the reason they are tired, is because the manager makes them think too much.
Professional sportsmen, the supposed pinnacle of fitness and dedication, unable to cop with the physical demands of thinking. lol

Love you, or hate you mate, nobody can deny your comedy value.

Priceless.

Believable7 Unbelievable1

Haha pleased to be of service Betty, but it is a serious thing. Just type it in:

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed and unable to meet constant demands.

Agree2 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 16:49:34
The problem I have betty is the 'I think' statements fast turns into 'I know' facts

Agree0 Disagree0

It sent too soon, there is loads of stuff online about mental fatigue impairing you physically:

"Burnout reduces your productivity and saps your energy, leaving you feeling increasingly helpless, hopeless, cynical, and resentful. Eventually, you may feel like you have nothing more to give."

Sounds like our defenders to me!

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 17:28:40
My favourite was about the players picking up injuries like dislocated shoulders and broken ribs because they are tired from training twice a week. Beast has got some new followers so no surprise he is posting a lot today.

Agree2 Disagree3

Did ed01 what say there where issues with lvg training methods ?

Agree2 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 18:23:15
Now, now ladies. Play nice :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Beast, actually I do accept that "burnout" is a very real and genuine state / condition. But I think trying to apply that to footballers being asked to play a new formation or system is a little far fetched to say the least. Having said that, I do think that as well as rigorous medical examinations, we need to start introducing IQ exams to ant potential signings. I note your point about footballers generally not being the brightest, but some of our players make 2 short planks look like Stephen Fry!
Irrespective of tactics and formations, we seem to be riddled with players who are devoid of the ability to make the correct decision in the simplest of scenarios. And learning from mistakes appears far too difficult for most of them. LvG can be held accountable for some things, but g3neral stupidity on the football pitch is not one of them.
Many have said how disgusted they were at yesterdays performànce, and rightly so. But a team containing Valencia, Carrick, Rooney, Mata RvP, Di Maria etc not mustering a single shot on target in 96 minutes? At home?
Sorry mate, but the problems at Un8ted are more deep rooted that just the manager. Desire, effort, application, and ability all have to be questioned.
Our team is littered with abbreviations. LvG, AdM, RvP, DDG. I think we can add the most prominent of all to that list. ADHD.

Agree2 Disagree1

Gds2

Ok maybe not the dislocated shoulder or broken rib, but what about the other 60 injuries this season?

Agree0 Disagree0

GDS

We have had miles more injuries coming from training than on the pitch.

What I am still trying to figure out is how the belgian flu turned into a broken rib:)

Like rafa's broken jaw? I believe if he hadnt had to do extra heading practice the day before his jaw wouldn't have been so fatigued.

jred,

For God sake leave me alone, every time I post you are on my back, it's getting embarrassing, my posts on this thread are clearly tongue in cheek, remember when you told me this was a banter site? Start acting like it.

Agree5 Disagree1

12 Jan 2015 14:59:39
There's got to be a point soon where LvG's stubbornness to change the system that's clearly not working is overcome by the fact he's damaging his big ego by us having to play like Stoke, at home to rescue a point in a game we should have won. Hopefully it'll happen sooner or later. Maybe he wants to bring in a CB this window before changing to 4 at the back.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think he will stick with it until:

A) We drop out the top 4.
B) He signs Strootman.
C) He gets the sack and never changes.

Agree3 Disagree1

Fresh

He wil not change anything with or without Strootman. We will still play 352 and he will have strootman in the middle and you know what I think of him so bad to worse IMO.

He will also not change anything even if we drop out of the top 4 because the media will rip him to pieces and it will be an admission of failure and his philosophy. When you treat them the way he does they will have the knives out for you when given the chance.

Fergie did it for years but he kept winning and did not give them an opportunity

He is either senile or blind if he can't see what everyone else sees with 352 but he is sending them out every week the same way and just changing 1 or 2 players and searching for whatever it is he is looking for.

You might be onto something with your 3rd guess and the next 5 games, which according to some posters here are easy and wins might be quite telling.

I am personally now 80 percent convinced he is the wrong man for the job. A few more performances like yesterday with a fully fit squad and I will be joining the beast camp, just hope there is a seat open :)

Beast i hope your well mate, i looking through your last few posts and i noticed something very funny. Before Christmas people were giving you some greif and every post u put up would instantly get a load of dislikes ( i don't think the majority even read your posts first) and recently every post u put up has been the complete opposite everyone likes it. I know its silly but it did make me laugh. Are these same people that were calling u a troll etc now coming around to your way of thinking? It seems it only took a few games for Van Gaal to turn from a saint into the devil.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Thanks Dellboy, it is horrible in a way because it was one thing I didn't mind being wrong on, but unfortunately rather than prove me wrong LVG keeps on doing what I suspected he would do.

Appreciate your pointing it out mate, hopefully those people that were just clicking disagree whenever they saw my name will maybe bother to read my posts a bit more now. Although I do appreciate I'm not always right, I have been about LVG so far unfortunately.

Agree2 Disagree5

I think it shows more about the modern day fan that a team can win 6 in a row and not lose for a dozen or more games, then have the audacity to lose 1 game and people want him out.

Agree2 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 16:19:48
dellboy,

This has changed since yesterday, when everyone overreacted to a defeat, it always happens when we lose a game, panic strikes and the world ends, things will get back to normal soon don't worry.

Agree4 Disagree1

I still think the manager will be a success, but he has to drop the 3 at the back system now. Yesterday's result could have been so much different if he had taken the breaks off and allowed the team to attack with purpose.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 13:37:58
I'm going to deflect away from formation/strategy slightly as I am like everyone else and could talk about it for days. But what's the point, right?

With everyone fit, and playing any formation which only involves 2 out and out centre backs, does Rooney make the starting XI, and where does he play if so? Because for me, I have no clue what he brings to the table! He was awful again yesterday, central midfield is not his position! He constantly gives the ball away with those horrible cross field diagonals, he doesn't get into the box enough and we'd be better suited with more energy in there, such as Herrera! So do you play him upfront? Personally I'd rather see Falcao, an out and out forward, get a run of games in a better system where he'll get service!

IMO, whatever formation we play (with 2 CBs), my starting XI would be (defenders not included). Carrick, Herrera, Di Maria, Mata, Falcao, RVP

Believable0 Unbelievable1

If I dropped anyone it would be RVP, not Rooney.

Agree7 Disagree1

I would swap RVP for Rooney in that exact formation. But if the gaffer insists on RVP being his main man then I would offload Rooney for the exact reasons you suggest, he is paid too much and is too valuable (financially) to be on the bench and with LVG insisting his captain will always play we are unnecessarily handicapped with him in midfield.

We would still get a lot for Rooney in the market, I would cash in if he isn't being played up top.

Agree4 Disagree2

He plays ahead of mata imo

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 14:44:45
Drop either Mata or RvP before the captain who has scored important goals for us this season as well as assisting half of RvP's and Di Maria's goals. Mata has been useless really, I'd much rather have Herrera in for him considering he's stronger, can tackle and likes a bit of a physical battle. It means Rooney could then push forward a bit too.

Agree1 Disagree0

I'd offload Mata as well.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 15:05:56
Maybe I am a biased mata fan, but I think in the right formation he'd be quality, I mean it's not as if the World Class Di Maria is shining in this formation, or anyone else for that.

It says a lot when our best two players over the unbeaten run were big Dave and Carrick, our holding midfielder.

For me, we need to stop playing 4 CBS at home, well the 3 and Carrick, who essentially plays CB.

Let's get back to you score 3 we'll score 5!!! Our attacking options are our strong point, not our defence, so let's build around our attacking force and stop playing with 6 at the back to compensate for how many errors our defence make.

Attack, attack, attack

Agree4 Disagree1

12 Jan 2015 15:08:59
I'd replace Wayne for RVP at the minute. Not his biggest fan by any means, but at the minute he brings much more to the table.

As for Mata, I wouldn't offload him. If we're going to be playing in Europe next season (in whatever format), we'll need a stronger squad, and I think he's a useful player for the slower paced European games.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 12:05:12
Hello everybody, I'm a first time poster who has enjoyed the site for some time. I'm a worried Utd fan. Let's get things straight, LVG is not doing a very good job. Recent good results have papered over a series of poor performances. This team is horrible to watch. Ponderous build up play, endless passing backwards and a chronic lack of pace. There is a deep malaise at Utd. Every team we play look fitter, quicker and stronger.
Juan Mata was sublime for Chelsea. He was invariably their best player. He is a shadow of that player. Di Maria was one of Madrid's best performers and he started off superbly for Utd. He has looked a mile away from being a £60m player since those early games. RVP was the league's best striker under Fergie, he's now a sulky lethargic shadow of that player. The lack of pace in the team is a real worry yet it was self inflicted by getting rid of Nani, Hernadez, Welbeck and Zaha. Erratic performers all of them, but pace is paramount in modern football. It can of course be compensated for by moving the ball around with speed, but there is none of that. The football is awful to watch and is every bit as frustrating as last season under Moyes. Sorry for the pessimism but that's how I feel watching this crud every week.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

We have two problems, the formation and we are lacking some crucial personnel.

We need to play the 4-3-3, it is the best formation. One striker up top and two fast wingers, we only have one but if we had kept Nani and he had performed then we could of had Nani and Di Maria either side of Falcao or Van Persie. Secondly we have what looks like a make shift defense even when we have the necessary players fit. Thirdly we are lacking a box to box midfielder who is crucial to the 4-3-3 system.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 13:00:10
Nani had years and years to cement his place, he flopped. Not good enough. So forget Nani

Agree1 Disagree1

We need a better Nani for sure. But I wouldn't of let him go out on loan when realistically, we have no one to replace him in that position that has any skill.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post Roger.

You are bang on about ADM as well, it isn't a coincidence for me that once LVG's methods started to have an impact after a few games his form dropped off before the injury. Our players look jaded despite playing less games than any other team, they do not move for the 2nd or 3rd ball, the movement/laziness is shocking unless the ball is close by.

Agree2 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 14:53:06
Fresh, Herrera is a box to box midfielder, a good one at that I don't understand why LvG doesn't rate him that highly. He can pass, score, tackle, run, create, and most of all has a great attitude.

I also think that ADM looks like he's being a bit selfish at times, going for glory or he's just trying too hard to impress.

Agree2 Disagree0

Oz - I think Herrera occasionally gives the ball away needlessly, LVG despises this. I really rate Herrera but that seems to be the only possible reason he doesn't fancy him, his energy, guile and tackling make up for his occasional poor pass though for me - it is beyond strange that he isn't playing, same as Falcao though.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 16:13:57
I thought the reason lvg dropped Herrera was because some fans and pundits were getting on his back because in the EPL u need strength and height to defend against set plays, long balls and over physical teams hence why fellani was bought back in. However I could be wrong.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - LVG does not make changes due to what fans and pundits say CTR. He is not happy with Herrera and has chosen to look at other options in the centre of the pitch. It is not because of fans and pundits, he is more likely to dig his heels in than listen to those.}

12 Jan 2015 16:30:12
Ahhh well then I am wrong ed, but the change did seem to come about after it was highlighted by many that u need height and power.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it may well have done, but it had more to do with a personality clash according to people close to Herrera, hence him warming the bench.}

12 Jan 2015 16:53:13
That's a shame because I really rate ander and I know u do to mate

Agree1 Disagree0

Ed001

I remember what you said a while back when we met on this guy and you seem to be spot on and it is all happening.

You think he will survive the season if we start going the wrong way in the standings or they will make an early call and try and salvage a top 4.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it depends on how bad it gets, if he loses the dressing room completely then he will be gone straight away. His attitude is not suited to man-management sadly. Shame because I think the Premier League is always better when teams are stronger. I still want to see Man Utd lose to Southampton, for instance, but it is so much better when it is a great United side being beaten. When you have a team with issues behind the scenes causing disjointed performances, then it is difficult to get excited when they get beat.

I would be surprised if van Gaal was still in the post next season, unless he can turn things around in a major way. If he is going to do so, he will need to change the training and fix his treatment of players. These players are not naughty children, they are grown men, they need to be treated as such.

Ferguson had his faults, but one thing he knew was how to manage his players and win their respect. The famous hair dryer was not employed regularly, it was more about respect. They respected him and wanted to win for him. LVG is starting to turn more and more players against him, it can only end one way if he doesn't stop the rot.}

When LVG was named as manager, I was slightly concerned, because I know he can be a hard guy to work with, and his track record says at much. But I also thought he was exactly what we needed: A manager who would stamp his authority and get the best out of the players. Up-until now, I was quite pleased with how things have gone given the amount of injuries etc; but after yesterday, I have to admit being completely baffled with his team selection. I also was baffled with Falcao not starting the game, let-alone now even being on the bench. I just fail to understand the managers logic with regards to yesterdays game.

Next week will tell us a lot IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

I suppose the lesson here is a leopard doesn't change its spots!

Agree0 Disagree0

Sam

I agree. In a way the RVP injury will allow him to manage the Aguero situation and save face.

The team set up will be interesting s QPR is a very tough ground to get a win.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks ed001. I totally agree about Fergie and remember Steve Bruce telling a story about Cantona, who showed up to a function wearing tennis shoes when the players were told to dress formal.

They thought fergie would have him, but supposedly fergie said when you can play like him you can also wear tennis shoes in good banter.

Travelling to London for some work and have tickets for QPR but believe it or not will skip it and come back early as I can not stand watching us play like this.

Is there a major fall out with Falcao and how do you see that developing.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - from what I am told LVG has already decided he is not going to be good enough and thinks it was a mistake. People are saying he just doesn't want him to succeed as it would mean putting van Persie's time at the club at an end. I am not sure how that meshes, so I am not convinced by that. I don't know how Falcao staying would mean RVP going, but that is the suggestion. I personally think that LVG has caused such bad feeling that now people are just using any excuse as a reason. RVP seems to have become the target now, as he is seen as van Gaal's blue eyed boy.

The problem I see is that such turmoil between a manager and the rest of the club is not good for promoting a good team spirit. When people feel they are treated unfairly, they very rarely go out and give their all, as they tend to feel dispirited and lose focus.

As for you missing out on QPR, I am surprised, I would have thought now would be a good time to watch closely and check out the spirit on the pitch. QPR are not a good side but they are putting in some decent performances at home. What is the betting if you do go it will be woeful, if you don't go it will be the game of the season?}

Ed001,

I am not sure what Falcao has done wrong. He might not be hitting the heights he was a few years back, but I think he still has immense talent; and given a run, would deliver.

I hope it is all speculation, and Falcao starts against QPR and bags a hat-trick. :)

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he is coming back from a long injury lay off, it will take him time to get back to his best. If he can do so.}

Ed001

LOL, you are probably right and we will score 6 for all I know.

Regarding Falcao, I am surprised as he would have surely sanctioned the deal and this is not some nobody coming in a low cost and it would be an incredible mistake in judgement by him.

I am not sure how he can make that call as the guy has hardly had a run out in a set up that is lethargic and hardly creating anything.

He should look at himself first and take responsibility. We seem to be recycling the ball whilst going no where and playing 30 yard balls over the top to try and break down defences, which is all new to me in watching united all these years. I don't think it is no coincidence and we must be practicing this in training.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 19:43:51
Gcu so are u saying u have tickets to the game u are not going? Really?

Agree0 Disagree0

Yep. I am done with my meetings on Friday and had originally booked a Sunday flight back to stay on and go to the game with a friend of mine who is a QPR supporter and changed to fly back on Saturday.

I have never been this frustrated with a united team or it's set up and quite disheartened with what I am seeing and what a waste of utilising such talented players.

I would bet the house Fergie would have us sitting near the top or top of the league with this team and how we miss him.

We were bad in the mid 2000s when we bought Alan Smith and co but even that team was better to watch than this one.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - I agree that Fergie would be challenging with this team, but there are very few that can do the same.}

The thing is mate, I go to the games because I love the club, not because they are the best. Obviously we want them to be, but sometimes football clubs have bad times, its these bad times that prove who the real fans are, who stick with the club through thick and thin. Not going because we aren't playing well, no wonder other fans call us glory hunters.

OK so i thought i would post about the game after watching it back again!!

We controlled the whole game but just lacked the killer instinct, people are forgetting most of the squad are not Cohesive yet due to many injuries we have had !

Southampton were very strong and i think we are missing a dominant and powerful midfielder and a winger with some pace as well as out defence needs sorting out.

I know a lot on here are whining about it all but for me we didn't look in trouble in that game, i think we will get into top 4 then sort out the wings defence and a midfielder and next year we will be competing on all fronts

We will win the next 4 games !

LVG seems to be worried about our defence. I remember reading that we have only conceded 1 more goal than chelsea, so taking out that freak show against leister we would have quite a good defensive record. I know De Gea has contributed massively to this but still.

LVG should just go back to how it was at the start of the season, even in pre season when we seemed to move the ball quicker and seemed to create a lot more chances. He should go back to this as its very hard to score a goal when you only have 3 shots on goal!! The added bonus would be that it would at least make the games more exciting even if we do look more open

Agree0 Disagree0

BigV and that is why we need pogba now. He will turn this team over. But as much as I hate to say it, I find myself agreeing with the original poster and with Beast.
I have been prepared to give lvg the benefit of the doubt so far, but he's not helping himself by playing this utterly ridiculous formation.
We have world class attacking players, but they're not being given the chance to create and score. Our play is too defensive, too slow, too predictable.
I understand falcao needs a rest, but for him not to be on the bench is a big mistake. Lvg being the stubborn man he is, still thinks that was the right choice.
Why play three centre backs when they're all below the standard required of United players? Play 443 packing the midfield and let Herrera, carrick, mata and blind do their work. Put Rooney up top and get di maria and januzaj to support him and the team will play with a lot more urgency.
Ditch this stupid formation as it is becoming a joke.
Another worry are falcao and Herrera either not playing or only coming on as subs? Against an energetic team like Southampton, we need their energy. I am really worried that lvg is too stubborn to change his mind even when he knows he's wrong. That could be his downfall in the end.

Big V, we never looked in trouble, you're right. But we also never looked like scoring either. And when that doesn't happen, all it takes is one breakaway or set-piece and you're in trouble.

I know this may ruffle a few feathers but Angel Di Maria £57million, Alexis Sanchez £35million. Almost twice the fee, almost half the player.

Sanchez all day long, I think both are amazing players but I've always rated Sanchez very high.

Agree1 Disagree0

Give it time, if Di Maria can stay healthy and be played where he is most effective, he will show his world class ability again soon. As far as Sanchez goes, he deserves all the praise he gets this year. Fantastic player.

Agree1 Disagree0

I don't know what united fans expected from di maria. His goal scoring record was always low and as for providing assists united have past their expiry date forwards in RVP and rooney. The only goalscorer you have is falcoa and he isn't even making the squad.
Sanchez is top top class not the level of messing ronaldo but streets ahead of di maria

Agree1 Disagree3

Sanchez has had a better run at it than Di Maria has to be fair. They are also slightly different with Di Maria playing much deeper than Sanchez is. I always said though that I would of loved Sanchez to have been signed, instead of Falcao actually so we could play a 4-3-3.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 12:38:51
Sanchez is fantastic but so is Di Maria. Remember Di Maria has had a few injuries that have slowed him down a bit this season, I suspect we will see the best of him soon with a run of games.

I wanted sanchez too but Di Maria will come good he has too much quality not to.

Al,

Good try mate but I imagine nobody will bite at that. Not heard from you for a while, is this the first weekend of the season United lost and Liverpool won or something?

Also, never heard of falcoa, Falcao has been in every squad when he was been fit apart from yesterday so not sure he doesn't make the squad. Again, good try, you must be delighted that United lost, it's like a win for Liverpool fans.

He'll not be able to show his undoubted talent, if he's played in a position where he's constantly receiving the ball with his back to goal.

I don't care if united win or lose. Sanchez has been the leagues best player by a mile though a terrible league he has been truly excellent.

Sanchez hasn't been the best player this season, he started off a bit slow and to be fair does he do it in big games, against big teams? Not really. Best player this season has been Aguero even with all his injuries.

Agree0 Disagree0

Both good players imo .
Arsenal done a good bit of business getting him for 30 mil tho

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Di Maria's decision making the last few games has been poor and a bit selfish and his passing has been very poor.

It is a function of playing him in the wrong position and also I at RM CR07 is the main man and everyone knew what their roles were, create for him. At our place he seems to want to be the main man but he is not a striker.

Sanchez so far a much better buy and physically looks more suited to the PL.

Aguero is the best player in the league by a country mile when not injured and top 4 or 5 in the world for me. Fantastic honest player and from what I hear very decent person and easy to manage and work with.

12 Jan 2015 10:23:26
In light of the game yesterday, Koeman came up with a very salient point:

'You know they have difficulties to build up with three centre-backs'.

Now, it is plain as the day is long that our players cannot fathom this 3-5-2 system. They sometimes get it right but that is only for short spells and never for a whole game.

The question is, why is van Gaal persevering with it?

Is he being stubborn like Fergie and saying that he will make it work with this belief being made stronger by public criticism? Fergie did that by winning the League with Cleverley in midfield instead of buying a midfielder.

Is it his stubborn streak, do we not have the players yet or does he not have a clue?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd say it's a mixture of the 3 fresh

Back four, and diamond midfield please.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 15:09:10
Ziddaniel - Back 4 with a diamond midfield wouldn't be much different because we'd still require width from the full backs, and as we've seen they seem to struggle without someone else wide in front of them which means they constantly have to go infield. What we need is 4-3-3 with a Top quality CB brought in.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fresh. I know the man and it is pure stubbornness. Its his way or no way. Even when he's so obviously wrong.

Chris and other stalwarts banging on about our great run - you must surely recognise the performances have been awful. In this league you can pick up results by playing bad some of the time, LVG has done this during the so called "unbeaten run", you can go all season being unbeaten and just have 38 points by the way = relegation!

There have been so many games that we have drawn or won that should have gone the other way, more than any other season I remember, we simply haven't deserved half of the points we have amassed from a football point of view. DDG has saved us over 10 points, he didn't do nearly as well last season.

Are you not tired of seeing such poor displays with the wealth of talent we have available? Any other team with this talent would be a joy to watch and would be winning more. LVG isn't managing Holland anymore, his system is flawed. Granted it takes time to settle, but other coaches don't need this much time, there was no more broken with Utd than there was with Southampton.

I have said numerous times, today's coaches all studied his system so they know how to combat it - coaching 101. It is 20 years out of date and until he grasps this we will see the same turgid performances, sure we will win some, but not enough as we should and certainly not in an entertaining manner Man Utd are loved for.

His training methods are 20 years out of date, they are not suitable to the English game or the modern footballer who breaks down much quicker than a 90's footballer.

The injuries were his making in large part, even the ones where you think this is no way to do with the training, the body is weaker and more susceptible to picking up knocks or not recovering from simple injuries like they should if it is knackered from over work.

The Asteroid 65 millions years ago didn't kill all the dinosaurs it seems.

U seem to be treating this like a popularity contest and believe by calling me out u can "put it in a nutshell" but I fail to see what Point u are trying to make to me apart from highlighting how immature u seem to be Atm, maybe some on here are a little worried about leaving a negative reply to a post from you in fear u might throw your toys once again out of the pram and leave us but I'm not.

If I disagree with you or anyone I will say and stand by what I say.

Am I happy no, do I see improvement yes. That is my opinion

Must admit to being intrigued by the amount of injuries we have had, beast can you enlighten me on the methods being used by lvg and his coaches so I have a better idea?

Agree2 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 13:31:19
Oh I am looking forward to this one.

Agree2 Disagree1

Chris - I said at the time of my sabbatical it was more to do with me taking over posts needlessly, so the original post gets lost and getting wound up with peoples delusions so it impacted my personal life by putting me in moods. Nothing to do with not accepting criticism, more to do with frustration at talking to a lot of brick walls at the time and having nothing positive to say, which most people wanted to hear at the time.

If I put myself out there it is more than fair for people to shoot me down, however calling me immature for talking the brutal truth and you not accepting it is in fact ironic.

The point I am making is that it was a mistake to hire this lunatic and we should get rid quick before the house of cards comes falling down, isn't that obvious what I have been saying since around 6 games in?

Bookedredmole - Numerous "in the know" people have stated that his training is outdated and he has them training 2 times a day. He used to be a PE teacher and hearing him talk he is focussed mainly on fitness, I believe he is making a mistake in thinking the modern professional is as tough as a professional when he started, the game is quicker now, the players are typically not as tough and will miss games that they wouldn't have missed if they were around a generation earlier (when his methods worked).

Footballers are mollycoddled and earn money for calling in sick too easily in my view. So I agree our players should be fitter, but he has taken it too far imo, so that we actually lack the push we had in the SAF days.

Our players look shattered despite playing fewer games, having a long time between games and a young-ish squad. Injuries are mounting up because bodies are tired and it is common knowledge that you are more susceptible to illness or injury if your body is weakened by fatigue.

I don't claim to be an expert, and I am not able to enlighten you on specifics, but we live in a world where most things come out in the media. The only people that have anything positive to say about LVG are some of our fans, we are a joke to everyone else, everybody is baffled by his decision making and I dread to think what goes on in that changing room and how many eyes are rolling.

Any other club if this was going on LVG would have gotten the bullet, I would put everything I own on that. He is benefiting from Moyes and the fact SAF was with us so long and started slow, our board are scared in particular Woodward, because it would mean he would likely be sacked for poor performance as well if he fires LVG.

Agree1 Disagree1

12 Jan 2015 15:14:06
My worry is, if he's concentrating so much on fitness, why do we seem to be struggling more in the second halves of matches? Where is our much-vaunted fight to the last second mentality?

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 15:22:37
Moyes was the one who had the team doing a lot of physical fitness training as well as changing the team's diet, a lot of the injuries last year were muscular strains which then proved that point. This year players like Wayne have said that training is better because there is more training with the ball. Also the injuries we are having this season aren't all muscular.

For example, Rojo, Blind, Rooney and Herrera have all been injured due to an impact inury rather than muscular. Then there's player's like Smalling, Rafa, Young and Jones who have made/are making a name for themselves as being injury prone because of their record since they joined. The only player i'm concerned about that may be suffering from the so called outdated training methods is Luke Shaw.

RvP has been fit for most the season which is a rarity considering he probably covers less ground than DDG. I fail to see how the injuries are directly related and only related to LvG's training which is what some people are making it out to be, there's a chance a lot of it is bad luck and split second rash/unintelligent thinking from some players.

Agree0 Disagree0

They overdo it in training Noucamp in my view, nothing left in the locker.

Maybe something in how much thinking the players have to do as well, half of their energy will be zapped just trying to remember the millimetre of turf they should be on for any given situation. Footballers typically aren't the sharpest tools in the box, so over thinking things leads to fatigue as well as physical exertion. I don't know if this is part of it of course.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2015 16:06:09
Again beast u are attempting to try and pass of your opinions as a fact while totally ignoring the facts.

Not once have I claimed in anyway lvg is the messiah like a lot of posters on throw at gds (which I'll add he has not either).

My gripe with you atm and I'll just state for the record I have nothing against u beast and welcome your opinions as much as anyone's on here that it seems that EVERY post u make is loaded for another bashing of a team and manager doing what I think people expected in terms of position.
We are challenging in the top 4 and are winning games.
At this point we are on for equalling our points total against arsenal, spurs and Chelsea with a game to go still. We have took more points of Everton than we did last year and as of yet barring mk dons and a few odd ref decisions at Leicester have yet to have been resoundingly beaten.

Do I expect better? Yes I do of course I do because other than the points I have made we have yet to totally blitz a team too (other than hull).

I commented to my friend last night I feel lvg has lost us 5 or 6 points this season already and if he wants to stick around for the long term he needs to sort out his in game management.

The negatives I see are the poor decisions still being made in the games and odd subs.

The positives I see are belief and hunger back.

We have had so many injuries and most in the same area, that a level of consistency has not been able to be built up in key areas of the team, and yes lvg again can be questioned about training methods and such, but I also see the same players that have always been injury prone are the ones getting injured still, Jones smalling and Evans were hardly mainstays in our team pre lvg.

I'm not here to fight his corner but I can see improvement. If that goes against your narrative so be it. I'm not on here to gain a following from people who change there minds more than most.

Like I have said your posts are coming across in a way where it seems you are more interested in agrees than actually making a point now.
Every post seems to be loaded to achieve the inevitable lvg out future post from you.

Right now we are playing and looking like a team that has had 3 managers in 2 years, each with an idea how to change the team back to winning ways, ure answer is to go and get a 4th in 2 years, mine is to support wot we have Untill it's obvious that a change is needed, which u can tell I clearly don't feel there is. If in another 6 games we still are losing games (and its Worth pointing out we have only lost one game in 12/14 games) and lvg is still making these so called errors then my tune will change I'm sure.

Agree0 Disagree0

Chris - I even say at the very end of the post "I don't know if this is part of it of course", so how am I passing my opinions off as Fact? I deliberately try to add imo or disclaimers in case people think I know more than I am making out or think I am attempting to start trouble. I certainly don't want to come across in the manner you believe I am, it isn't my intention. I simply watch the same game, read the same statements and hear the same excuses/rationale as 99% of our fans, nothing more and at the moment my views seem to be more in favour than they were a couple of months ago that's all.

It hasn't been plain sailing for the manager with the injuries, adapting to a new league, a down beat team and following a World Cup. However he isn't making anything easy on himself, he keeps making amateur mistakes, didn't we sign him for his experience? Well all I see is a spoilt brat in charge of the team who has not advanced us since Moyes despite the numerous advantages he had over Moyes, fixtures, money, player respect (not sure on this now but he certainly had it), fan patience, no CL doubts corrupting league plans, weaker competitors, (league table proves this) - Media love in, which is starting to turn, but Moyes was destined to fail from the get go.

It wasn't an easy job by any stretch, but it was certainly easier than LVG is making it look.

We all want the same thing mate for Utd to be playing well and winning things, if we are going to get back to that level then I think there are far more efficient routes to take than the LVG rollercoaster, that's all.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its was very much clear that we need someone very creative in the midfield that will create something out of nothing. A lot of players played out of position yesterday and the result was dismal.
Here are few best players of different teams who create a lot through the middle, Arsenal have Sanchez, Chelsea have hazard and fabregas, City have Silva and yaya mostly operate from the middle and create a lot of chances.

So point is Rooney is not a CM and Di Maria needs to play through the middle and not out wide, herrera should start every game, blind should play at lb or lwb but not in the midfieled with carrick as it slows us down a lot, Valencia has been doing a fine job but we need someone better there too.

Ed002, you mentioned Benzema in a reply to another post. Is he a player we are looking at for next season? Would much prefer him over the likes of Falcao and Cavani.

Noticed you didn't mention any wingers though, do you not see us targeting any for the summer? I'd of thought at least one would be one the agenda given our severe lack of quality out wide at the moment.

Thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Benzema is available for the summer and do not be surprised by a bid. The priorities that need dealing with first are well known.}

Benzema is a clever footballer but lacks pace, reminds me, in many ways of Berbatov.

Benzema is someone I would love to see here if Falcao is not the one. He is fat better than Cavani and would add a lot.

If we aren't to sign Falcao then other options i would consider long before looking at Benzema would be Thomas Muller or Paulo Dybala as a young up and coming option.

Of course we could go a different way altogether. People forget we already have RvP and Wilson and Rooney is best used as a striker. So why not a switch to playing a single striker and sign someone like Reus instead of Falcao and play Reus Rooney or RvP and Di Maria as a front three?

Agree1 Disagree0

Benzema is far quicker than Berbatov was and is more powerful. If he was in the middle with Rooney behind and pace either side of him like Di Maria and Cuadrado then we would be a fantastically potent force going forwards.

So another pitiful performance under this wretched 3-5-2 formation and a poor day all round at Old Trafford. I see more people seem to be calling for LVG to either change his philosophy or change club. For me Mr Van Gaal got it wrong again and I believe that should be the last time we see this horrific tactic.

Having said that all the blame cannot be set aside for LVG for these poor performances. We have 11 players on the park who combined earn more money in a week than all of us posters on this page will ever earn in a lifetime and they are constantly looking lacklustre. The majority of these players performed poorly under Moyes, weren't fantastic under Giggs and now they are failing LVG. So is it completely down to tactics (three different styles) or are most of these players just not good enough anymore?

Franz Beckebauer said in his autobiography that 'A coach can only do so much. When you are on the pitch and the coaches tactics aren't working you have to take responsibility and adapt your style to win the game'. If the axe falls on LVGs head for these poor performances then the same axe must fall on the majority of this squad.

P.S well done to the Saints. They have been a pleasure to watch this year.
