Well another weeks flown buy, DDG still up in the air, no central defence and no goal threat improved upon. Based on IMO our glaring weakness to attack I'm going for a 1-1 draw with villa. Coming from behind to take a point

Villa are awful. Maybe those lack of players will hinder us against the better teams but predicting a draw with Villa is pretty damn low.

3-0 easy.

The front three of villa have a lot of pace. They will sit back and counter. And we'll have a high line. That could be a problem. I still think we should win though

If I hadn't known the scores last Saturday and came straight onto this page, I would be 100% certain that we must have had a thrashing and lost 5-0. Rooney must have got a red card and missed 2 penalties, Mata must have made 0 forward passes and Smalling and Blind obviously gave a free kick away ever few minutes.

Oh wait what? We won 1-0? On the first game of the season? When the majority of our team are still finding match fitness? (Feel like Ronnie with all the question marks). Basically what i'm trying to get across here is that you are overreacting a lot, the season has just started and if you saw the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and even Liverpool, none performed as well either.

We are 3 points better off compared to this time last season and we beat a top 5 team. I was expecting this site to be raving how we have started well and the team will now be raring to improve and continue winning.

We all love United, I love watching us play and I am always singing until the very end of each game. let's start enjoying the brighter looking future our club has and stop worrying about who we will sign, how many shots we had on target and our poor use of the amount of possession. Because in the end we will still be watching our club continue to rise.

P.S we signed 5 players this window already and they have all fitted nicely into the first team, if that's not a beginning of improvement then I don't know what the feck is!

Lets crush Aston Villa tomorrow!

Enjoy your weekend guys and gals.

The best thing about this is the Ronnie gag and right below is a Ronnie post with question mark after question mark.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 23:36:50
Why ignore the glaringly obvious.?? Can a single person here hand on heart say that after the best part of £250-£300m spent we have a defence capable of winning the league or CL? And after spending that kind of money have an agony WR up top, vastly overrated and has been in decline for years, james Wilson, a kid who is not ready for this level, and chicarito , another player who isn't up to the level we need. We are toothless is attack, flacky at the back. Yes we now have a strong cm but that alone won win us titles. We have a winger in Depay playing number 10, a great number 10 in mata playing out wide, an average CM in blind filling in at CB, a makeshift keeper because we don't even know who will be our number 1 this season. We were very flat against Spurs. People say we're not match fit, it's the same for everyone. We had our first effort on target in the 70th minute against Spurs. And we're expected to be happy with this?

Why ignore the obvious? After spending massive amounts were still nowhere near winning the league or CL again

Agree4 Disagree3

13 Aug 2015 23:58:31
So you're saying the £250+ we spent included Darmian, Rojo, Shaw, Herrera, Morgan, Bastian has not improved our current side?

They is still several weeks of the transfer window and I'm sure the club want to carefully buy the right CB and I personally don't think our strikers aren't that bad, yes a quality striker would be good but we have already made a lot of signings. Rooney will start so no point arguing about it and i'm sure the other games Chicharito, Wilson, Januzaj and Depay can fill in.

Blind at CB isn't as bad as some of you think, we don't have much defending to do if we hold onto the ball, Blind is a great passer and I was impressed with him for the majority against Spurs.

However I do agree switching Depay and Mata around would be beneficial but LVG and his coaching team obviously believe Depay can perform there and who are we to argue with experts of the game?

Like I keep saying, stop blowing it all out of proportion and relax.

My comment about Ronnie was only light-hearted by the way, I think he's a great lad who bring a lot of enthusiasm to the site!

Agree2 Disagree1

14 Aug 2015 01:00:00
Nope, I said we have improved the midfield so not sure where bastian etc come into it. I'm saying central defence has not improved and up front were actually weaker. It's all good and well having the majority of possession but that needs turning into goals. Last season we didn't score enough, and we're so slow and static in Possesion it makes it very easy to defend against. All teams do is sit back, let us keep the ball then counter attack at pace. The game against Chelsea was a perfecf example of us with 70% Possesion and get stung with one attack as the defence is not good enough.

We were toothless against Spurs again, 1 shot on target in 90 mins at old Trafford is woeful. Defence is poor but our attack worries me more. We do not have the fire power to trouble the top teams in this league and Europe. Therefore unless we add to it we won't win the league , it's as simple as that for me. I'd move Rooney on and bring in 2 new faces. Start with lewandowski

Agree6 Disagree1

14 Aug 2015 06:30:21
Stand

You know I agree but we are still in the honeymoon phase of the season where some think things in the garden are rosy, It is called being positive and saying we can't win the league is frowned upon. Well you, Schmidfield and I are saying the same things, (and we are different people), we won't win the league this season, with what we have upfront or at the back, we will be in the CL playoff again with luck next season. There is still 2 weeks to resolve it though

Edds, people talk about us bidding for Bale, but I'd much prefer Greizmann? He's younger and probably available for half the price? He'd be a top signing and could slot in as striker?

But no where near as good as Bale , who is also premiership proven. Remember ADM, what he did in Spain and what he did over here. The moneys irellivent , it's not out of your pocket is it. Bale is by far the better option

Agree4 Disagree0

14 Aug 2015 16:29:06
Griezeman and bale are miles apart IMO. Like most wingers Griezeman is a bit one dimensional and needs space to look good, bale on the other hand can change a game from 30 yard out.

Pointless discussion as he is staying at Madrid and will only move if he has another bad year and the press get on his back.

Anybody know why LVG insists on playing players out of position.Valencia right back, Young left back, Rooney midfield, Mata winger, Depay central, etc. Then wondering why we are not playing to our potential, c'mon LVG square pegs in round holes don't work. Play players in their natural position & the performances will surely improve.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

Seems so simple doesn't it

Agree1 Disagree1

13 Aug 2015 23:38:19
Well Young hasn't played LB much at all, mainly LWB in a 3-5-2 or as a LM. Valencia was deployed at RB mainly because LVG didn't trust Rafael and to be fair to Toni he has performed fairly well for a winger. Rooney played in midfield to accommodate RVP and Falcao, because we didn't have many midfielders at the time. Finally he has already said Depay will be in the hole because Young is performing well and Mata has been effective on the RW and LVG obviously doesn't thing Mata is what he needs in the center.

We are talking about a man who has one of the most successful careers and has taken massive decisions to put us back to where we belong.

In 3-4 years time we could be looking back at this and thinking "thank got Van Gaal did that or changed so and so's position"

Just chill out.

Ed's, I'm not sure which page this post should go on. But, after going to the supermarket this evening, my son nor iced you could pre-order fifa 16, so as I moved closer I noticed the usual Messi appearance on the front cover and looked to see who else was on it. (Last year I think had hazard) so guess who is on this year's edition . Jordan henderson. My son and I then looked at each other with very puzzled looks. Is this the premier leagues new face of its brand, dear me how on earth did he appear on the front cover with Messi? a lot of faith I had in my fellow man was wiped out in about 10 seconds this evening in aisle 2.

It was decided by vote this time, as in we the people got to vote. It was between Henderson, Courtois, Aguero & Kane if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, Henderson somehow managed to get ahead of Aguero there! He was really promoting it though, and wasn't afraid to vote for himself on a Twitter poll between a few fans either, so fair play lol.

Imagine if they've got to do a fifa advert to promote the game. Messi could probably just turn up and naturally do a couple of round the world's and hit busquets ring piece through a car window, and then poor henderson they will have to use the latest cgi technology just to make him run in a straight line and not have 1 football boot sole a little higher than the other.

I think we will see some positive moves if we get a very positive result on Tue. We need to cement our place in the ecl for the money men to open the chequebook and for targets to commit. Nothing factual in that just the feeling I have, IMO we are in a good position to push harder to complete deals once ecl is secured.
There has been little or no noise on any of our previous signings this year I believe deals are being lined up with talks ongoing and if we can build a pretty unassailable lead on Tue the push will be on to complete.

Long time reader, first time poster. Hello all. I can't believe we haven't signed Otamendi. What on earth is the world coming to? This man is world class, quick, strong in the tackle, and although only 4ft 8 he has been seen heading the ball on more than one occasion. Now although I have never seen him play, I am sure this was the man to save our season from total embarressment. I mean, we're 7th in the table, scored the second fewest goals in the league and haven't progressed in ANY of the cups!!! This season has been a joke!

The squad from Fergies last season to the squad we have now. Now we all know we were left with a ridiculously ageing squad. Arguably we were only left looking strong in our attack. Still unbelievable how he managed to win the title with that squad.

Anyway, we all knew (especially after Moyes) that we were going to go through a transition. The squad poor Moyes was left with had ageing players, injury prone players and youth players which were overly hyped. We are now approaching the end of the third transfer window under LVG (fifth overall). Moyes was not backed in the market at all and both Fellaini and Mata were panic buys but well done to both of them for turning things around. I feel we have done very well. It's a "process" as LVG says and in that process he has gotten rid of a lot of deadwood which isn't easy and has bought in much more quality. Yes Falcao and Di Maria did not work out but sometimes there is not much that can be done. I had high hopes for Di Maria. Oh well.

It is painfully clear to see we are lacking in attack but I am certain this will be addressed come the end of the window. The CB position does seem up in the air and I hope Rojo replaces Blind if we do not sign one. De Gea? Anyones guess right now. I would assume Lloris will be bought if David is sold. Our midfield is a sight to behold from what it was! IF we do address these areas and bring in a CB and an attacking player, we honestly should be winning the league. There is a lot of quality in that squad and a good mix of experience and youth.

I really do hope that the emphasis LVG puts on being so tactically astute does not bite us in the arse. Fergie with this years squad would walk the league and it would not be down to him being a tactical genius but more so him instilling confidence in the amazing talent at his disposal and letting the team go out and play freely. I am intrigued to see who will be signed, who will be leaving and the squad we will be left with come the end of the window. Bring on Villa first though!

In an age of football where money rules everything, in 95% of players eyes, I have just been reading about the lad Newcastle bought this summer, Chancel Mbemba, what a thoroughly decent hum being he is. Started his own charity for those less fortunate in his native DR Congo, and also in Belgium. He runs it all and puts 10% of his earnings in every month, no one else contributes a penny. When he retires, he is going back to Congo to continue the electrician training and work he was doing before becoming professional. And have to say, he looked the business when he turned up for his PL debut last week.

If only all were the same!

Brendan there are nic people around or footballers to say. To be fair the the media is the blame for all this if somebody does something good in life that wouldn't make the news but as soon as something wrong happens the whole world needs to know .

I am sure there are footballers which don't want to show everyone how nice they are or they don't get the media coverage they deserve

.I see lot's of posts about the weaknesses in our team and how they don't match up to our rivals. I think sometimes people have an idyllic view of our rivals teams so I thought I might look at some of their weaknesses, just for a bit of fun.

City. Zabaleta has been awesome but last season seemed to have dropped off. Clichy, Kolorov, Sagna none of these are great meaning that City don't have great full backs IMO. Our aquisitions of Shaw and Darmian start to look better. At CB, Kompany has been awesome but looked shakey the last 18 months and struggled with injury. Him aside, they don't have any great CB's imo - if we had the same options posters would moan that its a weakness compared to our rivals. DM they have Fernando/Fernandinho both OK but not great. We have strength in these positions finally. Up top they have Aguero who is world class but when he's injured its a massive drop in quality, some might say that is a weakness although granted Bony is better than our back up options.

City are a very strong team and squad but as I've pointed out you could perceive them to have many weaknesses - I'm sure if we had their squad people would moan along the lines of what I said above.

Arsenal. A very good, balanced team and squad. But Giroud is their best striker and they have little back up - a major weakness surely? Coquelin looked good last season but he's not world class and there is no cover for him. Kos is a top CB but the rest of them have major question marks - if we had those options I'm sure there would be grumblings from our fans.

Chelse tbf are very strong and have very little weaknesses but some might point out Costa's injury worries and the fact his back ups don't look great? Or that when you take Hazard out they struggle to break teams down through lack of creativity.

Don't take this post as me slagging off those teams - as I've said they all have many qualities. But I thought it my serve as an illustration that the "we have weaknesses compared to our rivals" posts can be flipped around. I can assure you that many of the things I've mentioned above are indeed talked about on the other team pages, even sometimes sighting us as a rival that they need to keep up with (following our summer spending).

We still have a few areas which could be strengthened (I don't disagree) but so do most of our major rivals.

Great post HB. I remember last year befor3 the transfer window had opened. Ed002 said 'you guys will be very surprised when you look at the team in a years time as it will look completely different' guess what it has exceeded our expectation and the team looks completely different to the one we had in 2012/13 season or 2013/14 season.

Like HB mentions we now need 1 or 2 players to complete the team and from here on we would just add players of we need it . But we wouldn't need a drastic change as we just had, it will take gelling these players in . Imo we will challenge this year and we will win the league next year. Nothing is guaranteed but I certainly hope this is how it turns out.

Afternoon. I keep reading people saying we are playing this slow, boring football and it is all LVG's fault but I cannot understand how people fail to look at the bigger picture and see what is trying to be created and what LVG is doing. Last season we signed Di Maria but this didn't work due to, in my opinion, Di Maria having a shocking attitude but he is a player we brought because his pace was a real threat. LVG has stated that he wants to replace him with someone similar who has pace, looks like it's going to be Pedro. We signed Depay because he is an exciting player who will run at defenders. LVG wants Depay in the middle because he thinks we need more pace there. Point is, people bang on about this slow football we are playing and that it is LVG that is insisting on it however the players he is looking to buy would indicate he wants to play with pace so once again it comes down to LVG

Believable3 Unbelievable0

13 Aug 2015 16:55:32
Sorry, sent post before it was done.

It comes down to LVG trying to rebuild something we haven't had since Ronaldo/Rooney/Tevez and that is pace in the team. I'm just getting frustrated with the same comments being made and comparisons to the team with Ronaldo etc without much thought into why these comments are being made and not looking at the bigger picture.

13 Aug 2015 17:14:25
Ports I'm not sure I agree mate. If Depay has pace we would get more out of him out wide; I assumed he was the replacement for ADM but he's playing in the middle. Hererra is busy player but he appears not to be 1st choice. I currently can't see a bigger picture; just players being played out of position again.

We have the players but we need to see progress and urgency. I realise it was only 1 game but it felt a whole lot like last year again. Slow, dull, and predictable.

I think the player need to be set free, here's the ball, go play with it. There is far too much passing back still.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 17:26:35
Ports did you read the post by Jose ? It stated that we'll keep the ball until gaps open up. It looks good on paper but what happens when the opposition aren't willing to be pulled out of shape and just park the bus so to speak. The gaps won't come, and with the no risk style we'll have hardly any attempts at goal. Look how well we did against the better teams in the league last season, they were willing to have a go at us which opened up gaps for us to operate in.parking the bus kills lvg tactics for me

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 17:31:56
Ports - just my view - he wants one or two players with pace, like he wants a 20+ goal striker. He is ultra defensive with the ball, so he needs 1 or 2 players to pull rabbits out of the hat. ADM & Falcao/RVP were meant to be those players last season, this season it is meant to be Rooney & Depay. The rest are all facilitators, basically ensuring we don't concede by keeping the ball and then allowing the 2 rabbits to pop up with the goods. I wouldn't be surprised if there was no plan to buy Pedro or another wide player as Depay was ADM's replacement (maybe I'm being too cynical and it doesn't really matter as nobody knows).

Occasionally we will not defend properly and concede, like occasionally somebody other than those 2 will do something in an advanced position and we score. Overall he is far too cautious and takes the "don't give the ball away so you can't lose" far too literally. The game plan is boring, the outcome is boring, but it will get results most of the time, you need more than that to win titles.

Every coach knows LVG's game inside out, he is embarrassingly predictable now because of how tactically capable he was 20+years ago.

Agree2 Disagree1

13 Aug 2015 18:37:24
You're right beast he was incredibly embarrassing at Bayern when he won league and cup and also got them into champions league final. Incredibly predictable he was then.

Also at the world cup, how dare he thump the European and at the time world champions Spain and get holland to a semi final of a world cup only to lose on penalties! Again embarrassingly predictable.

Beast I am all for constructive criticism but you are constantly criticising. It has just become plain boring. I would try and look at the positives for once, we finally have a decent RB. CM where we have been over ran in recent years has finally been addressed. We have just signed one of the most attacking forwards in world football, started the season off with 3 points against a Tottenham team which I believe will be pushing the top 4 under a very astute manager in pochettino.

The window hasn't closed yet and we are at the start of the season. Let's see where we are after the first 6-8 games and then you can come back and assess it. Until then lighten up man, we are heading in the right direction

Agree2 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 19:06:10
I could win the league with Bayern and did you watch the Dutch at the World Cup?

That Spain game was 20 minutes of Spanish capitulation, just like us against Leicester. They actually did nothing until RVP headed in just before half time.

I addressed Ports view. We are boring to watch and I tried to point out why, do you think we are entertaining?

LVG is very cautious, our performances reflect that.

Agree1 Disagree1

13 Aug 2015 20:04:57
i think people are getting confused between speed and tempo.

i don't particuarly want the club to sign 11 aaron lennons. But surely the players should have the speed of thought to have a picture of the game in front of them and play those one/two touch passes which open up gaps in the oppositions defence.

I think fans are frustrated with too many players keeping the ball for too long and allowing the oppositon to get back into their shape and moving the ball side to side because were not playing quick enough to find the openings.

This can only really be adressed with the players playing together for long spells of time, adjusting to each others movements and runs and eventually things will click. But this chopping and changing we saw last season does nothing to enhance the tempo we play at.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 20:42:05
Ridiculous statement to say that you could win with Bayern. I'd put every cent I have on you not winning a thing with the same bayern team that LVG had that season. Absolutely ridiculous.

And yes Spain capitulated and holland holland took advantage. It wasn't handed to them. They still had to do it.

I did watch holland at the world cup. An average squad with many shortfalls that were very tactically aware and did what they had to do to get to the semi final. Good management is what I call it. You can not argue with that.

Your arguments have too many holes.

Let's compare our current strikers with our last season one.
Rooney scored 14 goals last season without much playing in the real Striker position. With strong CM we have now, I reckon he will score 20+ goals now(which I think majority of posters here don't think or don't want IMO)

Van Persie : Super striker but except his 1st super season, he was much like a passenger for next two seasons. He scored 12 goals last season and now we have Hernandez replacing him. People may have forgotten him but I think he is easily 10+ goals a season striker, especially when u need him from the bench. Since Rooney is our captain and 1st choice striker, we will regularly see him coming from bench and with right services he can score as much goals as RVP scored last season. And i do think he will get those services as season goes on.

Falcao: An amazing striker must say but has been completely destroyed by those injuries. As much as I wanted him to succeed, he really was piss poor on most of the games he played. Wilson is his replacement and I am sure he can score more than those 4 goals given the same game time as Falcao last season.

On attackers our spineless ADM scored 4 goals and around 10 assists. So Pedro is looking likely to replace him who is a better goalscorer than that snake. He can probably score around 10 goals and may be similar assists. He can be an update to ADM(considering his last season's form)

In addition to Mata, Herrera who nabbed important goals we have brought a superb talent who has real potential to become a worldie and is a genuine goal scorer. Memphis.

So looking at it, we have more goal scorers than last season and also have more steel and creativity in our midfield. I would be happy if we were to buy another striker but even if we dont, i would surely not write off our chance as a title contender( does not means winner)

People need to stop moaning and look on the right side. Things cannot change with a snap, that is the main reason why rebuilding is called RE-BUILDING.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

13 Aug 2015 16:01:05
Prior to the signing of Darmian many were suggesting we should get Coleman. Now there's a push for Stones. You can put it all down to de Gea, but the fact is that last season, under the masterful stewardship of Martinez, Everton conceded 13 more goals than we did . So why would you feel more secure if we purchased either of them?

The other man's stones are are always harder.

What we need this season is more goals.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

13 Aug 2015 16:17:19
A poor defensive record isn't a true showing of a defenders ability.

If a team concede 50 of 50 goals from the left, then would you say that the right back is also to blame?

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 16:29:03
I agree shawthing. But unless we have an established CB pairing LVG will tend to play more defensive minded players in midfield to protect the defenders. This will lead to our strikers starving for service. They will have to play with their back to goal and may become isolated up front. This is one of the reasons our strikers looked so dire last season and the more adventurous midfielders a.k.a Herrera were not regulars. Only when we have a CB pairing which is rock solid can the midfield begin to concentrate on getting forward and helping our strikers score

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 16:34:20
I agree in the sense that we don't need a 20 year old cb whos played little premier league football but it is without doubt that we need a centre back regardless of how well statistically we did last season.

What we need is an experience leader at the back who will help our younger defenders develop by displaying some game management and general defensive nous were lacking. For example remember when we brought in laurent blanc in when he was 30+ and he helped us win the premier league.

Now i'm not saying go that old for a centre back but experience is what we need for the here and now.

Also about us needing more goals i think this will come from playing a set system with the same personnel for at least 10+ games.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 17:01:40

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 17:31:05
I'm all for upgrading in all positions whenever it's feasible, but just buying someone for the sake of buying is not the way to go, and I think that's why we haven't bought a CB yet. The club has determined that whatever we may think, the available talent pool does not contain an upgrade. Just look at last year. How much did City spend on Mangala? Did it help them? It takes time for a new player to settle into a system, especially one as detailed as LVG's.

MPez, have you done an analysis of the 37 goals scored against us last year to determine where an obvious weak link was?

Oh, and I forgot, one of the other defenders at Everton that everyone was clamouring about was Leighton Baines. So, with 3 out of 4 defenders desired by the cognoscenti on this site, they managed to let in 50 goals.

We need to get behind the players we have. Let's wait until they've shown themselves to be incompetent this season before we condemn them. I think we may be pleasantly surprised.

I wouldn't disagree too much Sharham but it will also depend on what transfers are made from now until Sep. Arsenal have consistency and togetherness on their side but they still need a top striker plus cover at DM before I'm too worried about them. City is a tough call - if their experienced spine puts in a good shift they will be strong but as you say the fitness of aguero and form of kompany/yaya are important factors.

A non existent midfield has been massively upgraded, a young future worldie in depay is on board, and a quality rb I'd previously never heard of who looks made for the prem brought in. Everyone can see we need the following:

1) To sell De Gea and get a new 1st choice Keeper

2) Buy a new centre back

3) Buy a RW replacement for the 'spineless one'

4) Buy an out-and-out striker

. yet we have not done so & don't look like doing so!

Even if LVG doesn't want to spend £36m on Otamendi there are other top quality and presumably cheaper centre back options out there (Rudiger, Howedes, Toprak). ALL of those 3 would be a MASSIVE improvement on Jones and Evans. How does LVG not see this??

It's shocking that he's brought in 11 players and spent 1/4 billion pounds in the past 12mths and the team still has HUGE gaps to fill!!

Makes you wonder if Giggs has any sort of clue what LVG is up to with his statement that we need to strengthen the spine and all we have done is weaken it. Don't agree with selling De Gea unless the money is close to his valuation.
So his heads not right! I guarantee come the 1st September if he is still a Man Utd player his head will be right. If he runs down his contract he needs to be in tip top condition to get the best deal elsewhere and to make the Spanish squad for the Euros next summer.
One more good season out of him could be worth a lot of money in terms of CL and PL progression.

We all loved Hernandez not so long ago and he offers something different to Rooney, as does Fellaini so unless a top striker is available and willing to join Utd then why should we buy anyone!

Ideally we need a CB but the options have to be better than what we currently have and a number are not proven or definitely going to make it in the PL.

Some people are criticising LVG for the amount he has spent but then at the same time saying money is no object and spend silly money on a CB and CF.
We can't have it everyway.

Major surgery was needed on the Utd squad when SAF retired and for me that was always going to take several seasons.
Most of the deadwood has now gone and although not perfect things are moving in the right direction.

Anyway, Herrera is faster than Mata and has a bit more skill to beat a man. Those are 2 of the most important skills for that role. I remember seeing Herrara on the right of a midfield three last season and i thought he did very well. Almost as a RM.

Gav

Sometimes people who believe they are way smarter than everyone else are blinded by their egos. We went on that massive run against the top teams last year due to the fact that in some ways he was forced to play people in the right position i.e. rooney upfront( rvp was injured), Dimaria was injured and Herrera finally got a run in the team.

He is decent manager but yet to see his genius TBH given how much we have spent alight 2 have ben complete flops and gone now( Di Maria and Falcao).

I don't want this to be a negative post but can anybody see us having a realistic title challenge with this current squad? I like Blind as a player but we are asking for trouble if he is continually played at cb purely down to his height and lack of pace i don't care how intelligent he is with his positioning he will always lose out in a foot race or challenging a big lump for a header.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

13 Aug 2015 13:53:45
I don't see why not. As long as we beat the teams who we should be beating and take points off our rivals, then why not? We won league titles with worse squads; and I personally think we have a strong squad now - even if we are lacking firepower in the forward areas; but that doesn't mean someone won't come good and will be able to fill the void so to speak.

Agree3 Disagree2

13 Aug 2015 13:58:04
I think we will challenge and putting my neck on the line to say we will win the league this season. We showed last season that the top teams found it difficult to beat us, we will have learnt from the poor results against leicester etc and although we have more games, we have a fairly decent sized squad so players will be getting more game time across the board and this will keep some sharpness there and also a healthy bit of competition to keep players focused. We may not win it in the fashion and style some people want but if we win the league, people will forget about performances.

Agree2 Disagree4

13 Aug 2015 14:11:25
Not a cat's chance in hell I'm afraid. City, Chelsea and Arsenal have all got superior teams to ours. We are lacking three top players and it is not looking like we're getting any of them. We need the striker to play in this system and we don't seem to have any inclination at getting one.
We need a top winger, Reus or Griezman and again we are not going for either. Lastly, we have needed a top CB for two years and we have messed around.

Agree1 Disagree2

13 Aug 2015 14:12:24
With this current squad for us to win the league teams like City and Chelsea would have to have a poor season, I just can't see both those teams doing that this year, City are strong favourites at the moment and they may even strengthen yet, Chelsea are not as strong as last year and rely so heavily on Hazard and Arsenal will do an Arsenal

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 14:36:34
I have to agree i just can't see us challenging i think we might get a bit closer but i can't see us getting top 2 our tactics and personnel haven't changed enough against teams that just sit back Mephis needs to play on the wing i can understand not dropping Young because like him or not he does actually warrant his place in the team at present but we could play him on the right and Mephis on the left with either Mata,Herrera,Adnan or Perrera in the middle it is like other people have said you can buy the best players in the world but if you don't play them in the position that they have made themselves the best at what is the point. We have signed some quality additions and addressed the midfield that had so long been a problem but unless we sign a cb and play players in their correct positions then nothing will change.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 15:00:16
squad wise, yes i think it's more than capable of challenging for the title.

we have a great squad starting to take shape (not quite finished i know) with a good mixture of youth and experience.

my concern is tactically we'll struggle to score enough goals due to lack of chances created against a side not willing to be pulled out of shape and just parking the bus.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 13:18:44
Hi all,
How about taking Zlatan on loan. We won't spend a fortune on transfer fee. Just his big wages. And then go for Kane next season when Levy is more open to the idea of selling him?

Believable1 Unbelievable2

13 Aug 2015 13:35:24
Is that even an option. A loan signing could be good if we can't sign the person we want, however, Rooney still won't be dropped so i can't see us getting someone happy to sit on the bench until Rooney gets injured or is rested unless it is a young up and coming star

Agree1 Disagree1

13 Aug 2015 13:46:21
Hi Zaid,
For years I was never a fan of Ibra, probably me being very naive, but even when he went to Barcelona I remember thinking are they serious. Especially are hearing what the package/price was. However he has definitely got better and better with age and after pondering his possibility for weeks now I think you might be right here. I see Kane as a possible long term replacement to Rooney but he needs to be playing regularly and it just won't happen if he comes to us this year I fear. So, perhaps Ibra is a good option.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 13:49:26
or rooney plays the 10.
or zlatan does like he has been for psg

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 13:54:19
With 4 competitions to play in, don't you think there will be enough playing time for the other striker? And going by Rooney's fitness, he will be injured a lot. So why not? And Zlatan on loan would be a better option IMO since he won't have any sell-on value. We can try for Kane, Mueller or Lewandowski next year.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 13:57:54
Do you really think that the transfer fee would be high?
Can't think so, he would be very cheap and I think its wrong to make stop gap signings and we should be looking for top talent and dismiss someone who could have a fallout within a day.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 14:12:52
I have always wanted Lewindawski, but it seems that LVG thinks otherwise. So Ibrahimovich will be a good player to buy and especially for two to three years of service.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 14:35:25
@KingGiggsy
Agree.
@rohanarora8
I would prefer Zlatan on loan over buying Kane because we have already spent a lot of money. Would rather spend money to sign a CB and GK (as DE Gea might well be leaving) than spend 40m on Kane this year. But if spending 40m on Kane won't affect the FFP or our plans for a CB and GK, I am all for it.

What's everyone's thoughts on Adnan Januzaj this season? He had that tremendous breakout season under Moyes and was used sparingly last campaign under LVG, one good and one bad I suppose some may say.

Would it then be fair to assume that this season is a make or break for Januzaj in some ways as he will either reignite that spark we seen during the Moyes era or drift more towards the fringes of the squad. I suppose the big question is will LVG use him and if so will he believe in his ability?

I keep seeing that LVG has this past record for developing young players but in my opinion Adnan Januzaj is the most talented young player in our squad yet he has regressed under LVGs tutelage. I am hoping for big things from Januzaj this coming season with the amount of games we have to play and I will be annoyed if the manager denies him the opportunity. Our team lacks pace, Januzaj - touted as the next big thing 13months ago - has it in abundance.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

13 Aug 2015 13:30:54
To be faor to him he has two different managers with two different ways of working, training, playing. It is hard for more senior players so it must be even harder for a younger player. He obviously has potential and giving him the 11 shirt says a lot. I think they need to decide what position suite him best and play him in league cup games and bring him on as a sub as much as possible to let him prove if he has what it takes. I'm more excited about Perreira, he looks a great player and i think if he is not loaned out this season then he won't be at all because they know he can start breaking into the team. I personally would loan him out and give him a chance to play regular. Look what Schneider has said about playing in lower leagues and becoming stronger, physically and mentally

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 13:34:56
JMB? Sorry i just love saying that, and your reactions pretty good as well.

In all honesty i don't think he'll make it here at United. And that will be our loss. He's a great player, very technical and skillful, but not physically built for the premier league. You have to look at players to liken him to. For example:

Sanchez
Hazard
Oscar
Silva
Sterling
Ozil

These are all players he should be aspiring to be. The play Wing/No.10 for their clubs and he is the worst out of all of them.

Granted other than Sterling he maybe the youngest (i don't know ages exactly) but what all those players have, that Januzaj doesn't, is that little bit of strength. That little bit that let's your barge past someone if your particular skill hasn't worked, and still keep the ball. That little bit of strength that allows you win win a 50/50 and they get your head up and do what you do best.

I love Januzaj, and i really want him to succeed, but, it's all down to him now. If he does a Ronaldo and stays after training in the gym every day, then he will make it. If he does the bare minimum to get by, he wont.

Good signs so far though as him and Lukey Shaw went to Dubai before pre-season to get some fitness in with our fitness coach.

I'd have him or Pereira on the right over Mata.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 14:02:32
Last season I felt Januzaj tried to hard to impress by taking shots on he shouldn't of, trying to take on 1 to many players and not crossing or releasing the ball quick enough. He clearly has the talent and ability, he just needs better game understanding and to simplify things a bit. Maybe a loan in January if things aren't working out for him before then.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2015 14:03:01
He seems a little effeminate to me, ready to have s tantrum at any time it doesn't go his way. He doesn't seem to want it enough, his body language is all wrong. Ever since all that "which nation will he pick" malarkey he has just drifted.

Hopefully he proves me wrong, but when given opportunities last season you could have switched his shirt with ADM's and you wouldn't have known.

He needs a run of games with an attacking team, he actually looked good up top against Barcelona recently - had some confidence and looked better than Rooney had. Jury is out, he had a lot to do though.

God knows what to believe on Otamendi, half the press saying it is on, others saying we have no interest and never have and Ed001 saying that we have been negotiating for months, so hard to know isn't it. Just a quick post to touch on something I've noticed with some posters on here.

I see people crying out about the style of play and backing it up by saying its not the utd way. But then go on to say we should be buying x y and z of top stars. Buying these top stars ie bale lewy etc isn't the utd way either, yet you're happy for them to change one aspect but not another? Seems to me people want their way and not the utd way as much as they preach about the latter. I would have loved to have seen this page when Scholes and co were thrown into the mix, it would be pandemonium

Believable4 Unbelievable1

13 Aug 2015 11:41:27
I mention the "Utd Way" fairly often, to me it is the attitude/approach to games. The major blame for me is attributed to the managers philosophy not being the "Utd Way". I am confident that we would see similar overall performances if we had the best 11 footballers in the world for their respective positions. So I do not think we can buy our way out of this, it has to change with the man at the top.

That is why any major purchase has an initial excitement for me, then I remember who is going to be managing that player and my momentary high turns to deflation as I believe they will not be used correctly and the pattern/pace of our game will not change.

Sorry to be a downer, but buying world superstars won't change much at all, it is buying players for his system that matters and I don't even think he knows who they are most of the time to be honest.

Agree3 Disagree3

13 Aug 2015 11:52:14
United have always bought somebody in would improve the first team, cantona, Keane, rio, RVN, veron, Rooney, Ronaldo, RVP, I've prob missed more, and added to that have had the right players not necessarily world class but who epitomise what United are about, solskjaer, johnsen etc. and have always tried to bring youth through. I have been brought up on 442, trying to play exciting football.
Scholes, beckham, Neville, Giggs this collective unit coming thru will never happen again, and worse still the modern day football is all about money wether we like it or not so for me I want us to succeed the United way but does that mean £100m Gareth Bale isn't a united player, does that mean lewondoeski can't have the same effect as RVN no so I want the best players who are of an exciting brand of football to succeed at United. Doesn't mean I'm sacrificing any aspect for the other.

We had the highest transfer spends, consistently broke transfer records, and had the highest wage bill in the league throughout the 90s.

The United way was to sign the best players and to win. It's only since the Glazers took over that we started this revisionism about 'making' stars not buying them. The teams that spend the money in the best way to build the best squads will win the biggest trophies 9 times out of 10. The owners seemed to realise this last summer, but this summer it remains to be seen.

13 Aug 2015 12:50:08
We simply don't stop, we will never have class of '92 again, we live in an age where money and instant success rules , I don't like it anymore than anyone else but clubs don't have the time to nurture potential anymore. We will buy players who will help us win, I think the question is more about the style we are playing atm and if bale and Lew came in would it improve our football or not? We either embrace this possession football or we want exciting 442 football again and then that means another managerial change, in 2 years time there will be a new manager anyway so instant success is what LVG wants, wether he can achieve it is another story with this brand of football, 'philosophy' .

All the stuff about us not buying ready made superstars biut making them instead was purely financial and nothing to do with any romantic 'United way ' .

I used to think it was just Liverpool fans who constantly lived in the past , dreaming about the way things used to be and wanting Kenny back and then Rafa back so it could be like 2005 again and now we're almost as bad

you would think we don't spend cash.

should also say fergy missed out on a lot of big names.

I'm not saying we will sign these players but should be the calibre we look to sign. We have always bought when needed and tried to being youth through, it's not possible in this day and age because of instant success to wait for youth only try to integrate them. So we will carry on buying to stay in contention, we have to or we will fall away for good.

What about when we bought vidic evra solksjaer ronaldo just to name a few even cantona was mainly used as a sub for leeds. The highest profile player fergie bought was probably veron, and i wouldn't even put him in the top bracket at his time.

I was only wondering, why not have Mata switch with Depay, and have these two brilliant players in their natural positions? Unlike previously, feather-light players like Mata will now naturally flourish in the hole [as he did at Chelsea] now that we have that steel in central midfield areas. Alternatively, why not have Herrera in the hole, (as I don't think Mata is better than Herrera in central areas) to just deploy Depay out wide, where he creates & dazzles alike. We need that pace on both wings.

Tony - This is what 99.99% of people think mate, the only one that doesn't seem to is the one that decides.

Try not to talk common sense on here tony ha ha. You are right of course and hopefully LVG will see this too.

I have been thinking the same. However Jose's article on LvG explains Mata's position in a way, or at least it sheds some light as to why he is played there.

Ruud Guilt is the latest name to urge LVG not to ruin Depay by playing him out of position also.

Interesting views yesterday that Otemandi and Pedro are close to coming (we have had this before so wary of it). If this is the case I think.it leaves the squad well balanced and in a good place. It also positions us, with a few weeks left to maybe concentrate on either the striker Lvg wants or That big name. even if it goes to the last day we do not have to panic as we have done our main business.

Reading through some people's comments like "we should have bought this player when . " you would think it's a simple process of wanting and getting. Empirical evidence suggests that the club is having an extremely difficult time convincing elite players to join. Fellaini and Mata overpriced, neither addressing our short term deficiencies and ADM never wanted to come in the first place.

There are a lot of deep pocketed competitors for players out there, which, when combined with the recent unsettled nature of our club, may be making us less attractive. LVG is trying to bring back the swagger, but his tactical style, let alone his abrasiveness, may be a caution. which is not to say that he won't succeed.

i think we've struggled to attract the top top players for some time tbh. Maybe we aren't seen as a great prospect for a lot of the foreign players anymore. i think one of the biggest attractions was playing under fergie, but even that waned towards the end.

Dagnabbit, GDS2, I forgot to mention the weather. A Major Factor IMO. Back in the UK/Europe until September 1st and went to the Spurs game. The weather was perfect but the 2 days spent going to Bury, driving up the sodden truck spray infested M60 was a reality check. And this is summer.

I have to laugh at the 'we should have just bought him' or 'we should just throw x million at them' comments. What if the clubs don't want to sell or the player doesn't want to arrive? I know, I know a bit too sensible.

strebor,

How many of the world's top players did Fergie sign? I forgot we were signing the Ballon D'or winner every year until Moyes took over.

Hi Ed's could you tell me please how much our net spend is so far? As in players sold and players bought, the balance??

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - net spend? Really? It is best not to get into it as there are so many extra costs that are impossible to track until the accounts come it, even then a lot of the costs of transfers are hidden. The prices given out in the media are never right, that is even without taking into account that, when a player is sold, you have to pay up his contract, which usually amounts to millions on its own these days. Plus a player, unless they request a transfer, is entitled to 5% of the transfer fee. Then there is the 5% that now goes to clubs who produced them as a youth player. Plus there are signing on fees and agent fees, solicitor fees and sundry other fees. There is no way of giving an accurate amount, even the club's accounts dept would struggle to give you an accurate figure now.}

13 Aug 2015 07:33:44
So we would have paid up ADM contract to him before he left??

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - unless some agreement was reached on the amount to be paid, but usually it is the entirety of the contract, yes. For instance, when Joe Cole left Liverpool to join West Ham United, Liverpool agreed to waive a fee to help the move go through and thought that Cole would also be willing to give up the money owing in his contract. In the end he refused to budge and it cost Liverpool £3m to pay up the final year of his contract to get rid of him. This is part of the reason why a longer contract makes a player so much more expensive to sign.}

13 Aug 2015 09:14:03
i really don't understand peoples obsession with what the club spends on a player. it's not my money, i couldn't care less if we over pay, if we need the type of said player pay it and get um in

Strebor - That's just short-term thinking mate. If we overspend now it hampers what happens in the future, (less money to spend, players overpriced, existing players overvalued by us, overpaid by us, wrong players attracted (ADM)). It may not be our money but how we spend money has bigger ramifications for how much and how we spend money in the future.
