VDS one of the names rumoured to be on our shortlist for director of football role.

What does everyone think not VDS as DoF?

Believable3 Unbelievable1

13 Aug 2018 22:47:02
He will be a good apppointment.

Agree0 Disagree1

14 Aug 2018 07:36:24
Hopefully all applicants will have a clear defined idea of a pattern of play and therefore aim for a manager and players to suit. It seems opportune that after a poor transfer we now seem to be looking for a DoF, perhaps it was deliberate so the new appointee has money to work with. The cynic in me wonders if the new DoF sacks Mourinho then it excuses Woodward a bit, new direction and ideas not that Woodward made any error.

As to the who, the board should have definitions of what their strategic aim is (other than commercial) and it should define the appointment. VDS affiliation with Ajax is known, LvG didn’t work so is Ajax style what VDS wants and if so does that match with the board. Or do we want someone with continental knowhow and bring something new?

Agree4 Disagree3

14 Aug 2018 07:55:34
VDS is well respected in the football world and it will be his character and conviction that will secure the deals.
RedMan, i think he will be intelligent enough to pick players who can fit in any system. I think good players can play in any system and develop their games to suit the system.
With Mourinho, we do not have a clear system, the players look confused most of the time.
VDS will be a fantastic choice. The only other person that i thought might be looked at is Xavi. He's never played in our league, but he has always followed it closely and seems very knowledgeable. He is also very well respected throughout the football world and is in touch with the Spanish and South American market.

There’s only one man for the job - LVG.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed0333's Note - you shouldn’t mess with the supernatural mate.

14 Aug 2018 09:50:02
VDS for DOF would be VG but LVG would make me SMH and say .

14 Aug 2018 09:42:45
Imagine that Tony LVG and jose beasts head would explode.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Aug 2018 10:51:06
Looking at what he has done since he finished playing I think VDS could potentially be a good appointment. Brought up in the Ajax way of playing and an ex great of the club. I think he would bring back an identity that has been missing and would ensure that all Manager/ Coach appointments fit that model. Could do worse.

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Aug 2018 11:18:39
I know its pointless just picking names out of thin air, but there is one person that I personally think would be worth consideration. Huge experience in the game, a wealth of knowledge and very well respected. Also has in depth knowledge of Manchester United and English football.
Carlos Queiroz.

Agree0 Disagree5

{Ed002's Note - He has zero relevant experience in such a role and has never been involved in dealing with the main players in club football. It would be another terrible mistake to go down that road.}

14 Aug 2018 11:28:22
Got to be Gary Neville for me.

Agree2 Disagree1

14 Aug 2018 11:56:24
I like the one dear of a former player in that role, someone who knows the club inside out. However, they must have the relevant business acumen, and ideally the right contacts.

VDS or Gary Neville could therefore be good candidates.

On the other side it might be better to get someone with the relevant experience in such a role to start with. Someone who know how the role works making the transition from our current setup to the new one much more smoother. Then down the line look to someone like Gary Neville or VDS.

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Aug 2018 12:47:25
I saw the name Monchi mentioned but have not had time to look him up.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Aug 2018 14:57:55
Monchi has only been at Roma for about a year. Credited a lot for the success at Sevilla.
Van der Saar is an interesting choice. He knows United well and seems to be just as competent behind the scenes as he was between the posts.
Would the remit of the DoF role at United involve much involvement with youth development and set up or will
it be more working with the board and transfer strategy based and taking a bit of pressure of Mourinho? Is there a possibility that the board envisage Mourinho leaving and want someone in place to run things while a manager is found? Does the board actually want that and are they trying to engineer that scenario? Is Mourinho open to the idea of a DoF or does he feel it undermines him? Either way, it does seem to be the way forward, if the right person is found. So not Quieroz for me, he falls out with everyone and not very diplomatic. Him and Mourinho would be very dour football.

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Aug 2018 19:05:47
The lads suggesting Gary Neville, do you mind asking, what makes you think he’d be good in the role?

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Aug 2018 21:11:03
Top football knowledge, probably good contacts, and appears to have a bit of business acumen. Intimate knowledge of the club as well.

15 Aug 2018 09:14:52
VDS or Brian McClair. Not Gary Neville he couldn't Manage so why even consider him for a more executive role 😆😆.

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Aug 2018 10:32:18
What's managing got to do with it? None of the top DOF's seem to have been managers. Or successful ones anyway.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed0333's Note - I really can’t see LVG returning to United in any capacity he’s still incredibly bitter in the way he was sacked. Maybe he’d come back as an arsonist?

13 Aug 2018 20:19:45
Anyone seen G Nevilles comments about Mourinho. I completely agree with him.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

13 Aug 2018 20:26:54
fully agreed, but the likes of GDS and ken will ignore this.

Agree2 Disagree2

13 Aug 2018 21:06:43
I think neville talks a lot of sense rover.
I can see the short comings of the manager and our style of play.
I said last week exactly what neville and carrager said on sunday. They hired the manager knowing all the shortcomings that he has and knew his style.
He wanted a change of playing staff the club said no so he ether gets on with it and tries to get the most out of what he has the way he knows best. Or else he walks or else they fire him.
I hope shaw has a great season i hope fred has a great season and i hope bailly and lindelof strike up a great patnership i hope lukaku and rash and jessie continue to improve. I hope sanchez and pogba show their class. I hope we don't suffer too bad with key injuries. I hope jose doesn't have a meltdown. I hope ddg maintains his form. I hope that dalot is an inspired signing and comes good early.
Lots to hope for if even half of my hopes come through then we will be a better team to watch and accumulate more points.

I think GN is saying what 99% of the fans have been saying. We are painful to watch. And as I've said on here many times before, Mourinho likes big strong players over technically gifted ones. This sort of football went out of fashion 5 years ago.
Problem is, he'll not be here come April and we'll be stuck with a lot of these players.

Agree5 Disagree0

14 Aug 2018 08:52:01
Didn’t Neville also say the players like Jose and are happy at the club and the board need to back him 100% not 3/ 4 of the way.

Sorry Scousers 😀😀

Sometimes it's better to let people assume you are stupid rather than opening your mouth and removing any doubt.

It’s not a great deal of work Stevie unless you chnage all the categories (which I didn’t) . The biggest issue is people using different terms for the same team - United, Man United, ManU Manchester United, MUFC, and so on.

People can say what they want about Rooney, but he simply pulled pure magic out this weekend and his effort to fight until the end is something rarely seen in football anymore. Well done WR10.

It was fantastic what he did. No matter what league he is playing in.

Epitomised what Rooney was to Utd throughout his career. Always tracked back sometimes as last person, worked for the team. However we Also needed him to be gready and be the one on the end of the cross and he could not be both.
Great player but definitely the right league to prolong his career for a number of years.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2018 07:27:49
We all seem so obsessed by Pogba and an overdue reasonable performance (no more) by the team that we are failing to give credit to DDG - zero points without him once again.
Thanks David. Really glad you stayed. Like anew signing every season!

So glad Real Madrid have their keeper sorted. I can see De Gea for a very long time and he will go down as one of the greats in the league.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2018 11:52:08
The least he deserves at this stage is a proper team in front of him.

Agree5 Disagree1

13 Aug 2018 13:24:28
i wouldn’t blame him either, the way they treat keepers is appalling. Navas has been very good for the past three years, and he’s shafted. Courtois’ first mistake will be scrutinised and i don’t know is he strong enough for the criticism that may come his way. At least De Gea will be appreciated at United.

Agree2 Disagree1

13 Aug 2018 23:19:15
Would a different keeper not have made the saved DDG made? No errors but the saves weren’t anything special on this occasion, you’d expect most keepers to save them.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2018 06:34:24
Like everyone else I also liked Pogba's performance. I saw the match again and realized that we are so used to bogus football that a half decent performance by any of our players looks like world class to us. There were a couple of good ball by Pogba, a penalty and clearances. He lost the ball a few times while dribbling like he normally does which was a result of him trying to do too much instead of just passing. Now I'm not saying that it was not enough or his performance was bad. But us fans are making too much of it. Other team fans are so used to these things that this type of performance is considered average and it is what they expect from all their players. Hazard, De Bruyne, Silva, Kroos and others do this all on a consistent basis without losing the ball so many times. This might be a result of our style of play or whatever but we are making a lot out of an average performance.

Believable6 Unbelievable7

13 Aug 2018 15:47:49
I thought it was a pretty average or below average petformance from the team against a side that simply doesn't win away from home. They outplayed us in long parts amd ddg made three brilliant saves and Vardy missed a sitter before he scored. Against a better team, we would've lost.
Opening weekend showed us that we're way behind city, Liverpool and chelsea even. It'll be a struggle to get top4 and i saw nothing to inspire me.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - I agree that a better side would have beaten us but there are positives to take from the game. Bare in mind we had a horrid preseason and we were missing atleast 4 regular first team players from last season, additionally, we had a few debutants in midfield and a half fit Pogba. Some players looked really impressive (Bailly, Shaw, Andreas and Pogba) while others looked like they were finding their feet (Lindelof and Fred). A few underperformed such as Sanchez, Mata and Rashford but Im sure this will improve when the midfield gels better and Jose gains more confidence in his back 2 pairing}
