I know it is a MASSIVE longshot, but how do think valencia would go as a central midfielder? Ed? Syd?
Strong, powerful, quick, not bad defensively.
What could be a problem is his passing but I think we should try it.

(don't hate on me for making a suggestion, I think he could be our yaya)

OZWOLF {Ed007's Note - I wouldn't fancy it I don't think, a CM who can't pass isn't going to work and his crosses are far too important a tool in Utds armoury IMO.}

Believable0 Unbelievable3

Good shout saw him play there for Wigan and more impressively for Ecuador against Argentina in a world cup qualifier they went down to 10 men and they switched him in there he ran the show and his ball retention skill is fantastic, but I thought the same about Rio 5years ago but in switching consistent players can have a detrimental effect
Tiger2

Agree1 Disagree0

I hate on you Ozzy haha.

Not for me mate. He has played there for Equador but he looks good compared to the dross he plays with in that team. At club level I don't think his pace and crossing can be replaced nevermind his short game not up to scratch for our CM.

Just a quick rant fellas, Ive read a few things lately like why are we not just paying Martinez' buy out clause or we dont have any money or Fergie has no plan b blah blah blah. Are we all that daft to think its that simple? Heres a few reasons to think otherwise

1) not every player in the world sees utd like we do, as crazy as that may seem to some of us they would actually choose another club over us!

2) we have no devine right to just go and get who we want, we are no different to any other club in that respect.

3) some players lack the ambition to sign for us, they are happy to stay where they are rather than flop with us. Shearer springs to mind on all of the above points, we bid for him and shock horror he didnt want to sign for us, it happens!

3)we DO have money to spend. We have bid for modric, moura, Sneijder(last season) it is there for the right player.

4) we will have looked into signing other players and will have been told, not for sale, bid more, unwilling to move etc etc. we dont get to hear the half of what goes on. If anyone thinks we have only looked at powell, kagawa, moura maybe baines then they need to think again.

Rant over guys, i guess my point is Fergie will do whats best for us as much as he can, if that means no more signings then so be it, if it means spending another 30-40m all the better. Lets just get behind him and the players and get our title back!

Agree1 Disagree0

I have to disagree on a few points mate.

The Shearer thing well yeah there are other players who could have moved to us and chose not to incase they flopped but he is not one imo. He would have moved from Blackburn to their rivals Utd while at the same time his boyhood team comes in and he knows he will get a heroes statis. I was totally not surprised he did go there although I still was gutted.

I agree with points 1 2 and 3(b) but again disagree on point 4.

Just a month or so ago Berliisconi stated Silva was 99.99% staying with Milan then low and behold PSG in just a 51m deal bring him AND Ibrahimovic in. So he went from unavailable to gone in that time. PSG MADE him available by paying what was needed. Similarly to Madrid who constantly prise assests from clubs who were thought of as untouchable.

We have the pulling power to make deals happen but I feel SAF has the stubbornness to say to a club 'Ok fair enough we won't bother then' when told they are unavailable instead of 'well how about this then?'. I think the thought of a plan B is accepting second best when in reality option B can be just as good as option A. Maybe a stronger No2 might tell him whats needed?

Jono

Agree1 Disagree1

Jono
that's the nail on head every player is available at the right price, we keep hearing x player is not available but with the right money he will be.
now thats not a strategy you should follow all the time because it would lead to financial melt down but once in a while for a certain player/position.
for example is modric worth 32 mill as a player prob not but is he worth 32 mill to a team like united that is crying out for that type of player, i would say yes.
sometimes you have to pay over the odds for a player when looking at the bigger picture.
ferdinant for example

Jono

Yeah i agree mate, shearer was maybe a bad example but you get my point. It just gets a bit annoying when people seem to think signing new players is as simple as it is on fifa or champ manager! I still expect us to further strengthen the squad but some people want new signing everyday, its unrealistic isnt it.

Parks

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, you are dead right. I think sooner or later we are going to have to pay slightly over the odds for a player to improve the first XI. I hope the Eriksen rumours are true.

Sydney!

Jonjo amd jred it`s all well and good saying pay the money thats needed then slag the owners off for the debt, we pay over the odds and the grows, wether we like it or not the Glazers aren`t going anywhere, or perhaos you want to join Newco Rangers in their League 3

13 Jul 2012 19:16:39
This is just my opinion but I do believe that we might still see quite a few signings yet. AF has always said that one of the few mistakes Busby made was that when he stood down he left an ageing team for the new manager to come into. I believe that this is probably sir Alex last season and he will want to complete his re-building job and leave a young strong team for the new manager. What ever we might think of the Glazers they are business men and surely must realise that they need to back him if they want the club to remain successful and keep making them lots of money.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

13 Jul 2012 19:11:34
It would be interesting to see the figures of debt repayments v increase in revenue
gav.

in 2004 before the glazers took over our income was 246.4mill euro
by 2012 that had gone up to 367.0mill euro.

but you need to take exchange rates in to account and the £500m that has gone out the club

hope this helps

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Thanks for going to the trouble to find the figures. So we're now generating 120m euro more per year than in 2004? (less taking inflation into account obviously). And £500m is the total amount taken out to service the debt?

Interesting

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

If we assume a inflation rate of 3 percent compounded over 8 years it's 26% which reduces the increase to about 88 mil. If you then consider the value of "football" (hard to put a figure on it) it's really not a great increase. All in all I think from a business side the glazer are ok, without debt and assuming they don't take much in dividends we would definitely be able to compete at the highest level in transfers.

Given the choice I,d like to see Fellaini at Old Trafford . In a better quality team I could see him playing a similar role to that of Yaya Toure who was easily Citehs best and most influential player last year. How I wish he left for Barca this summer.

Modric plays a similar role to Kagawa and Moura, sorry but I have reservations about South Americans settling in this country. All the other names.....paper talk.

Hmmmm, bear in mind baines was at the euros and kagawa and powell were not. This will have delayed the process (if the deal is actually happening).

Ste-Utd

Agree0 Disagree0

I have a bear in mind, he's called Yogi. The Baines rumours are pure media speculation. No formal offer has been made on Baines AT ALL. There hasn't even been an enquiry into his availability so you do the math. He's happy at Everton.

Agree1 Disagree1

I assume you work at/with Everton then. How would you know this if you didnt?

Agree0 Disagree0

Er derp? Moyes stated in an interview that there was no inquiries for Baines or Fellaini. After that interview, twitter went viral with "Baines is closing in on a deal with Manchester United £14m upfront with £2m add ons". You got most of your information from a second hand source on twitter which only a few weeks back stated that Vertonghen was signing for Arsenal and Sigurdsson was signing for Liverpool. Don't believe everything you hear on the internet.

DodgyBanter

I think my blue friend (yes I'm a blue too) has got a little too worked up by the media. I frequently have a look at other teams pages, especially when there is a player linked between the teams. Working in Manchester I have quite a good rapport with Man United supporters and don't often find the "we'll take who we want" attitude that is so distasteful. Anyway good luck next season (except when you play us of course) and cross your fingers City's nouveau owners get bored and take their money with them.

Don't be surprised if we still get Modric.
That's all I can tell you as Modric has changed the Personell around him slightly in the last week or two, I personally wouldn't be surprised to maybe see Nani or Anderson included in a deal although I wouldn't really want to see either go as I feal our squad would be weaker for it.

Well I read this site everyday and post occasionally, and the thing that shines through to me is the doom and gloom of most of my fellow posters, although we weren`t at our best last season we only lost on points, as you all know we lost quite a few players for most of the season, but why do we need to go out and spend so much money on foreign players, when we have a world class academy, ok so we wont win a trophy for a couple of season, so what I`ve supported United since 1971 and know what it`s like to be potless, we trust Fergie ( well most of us do, some of us only trust him when we are winning cups) so let him run the club and trust our kids, in a few years with the right amount of playing time I will be proud to say we won the league with our own kids, I for one would get a bigger buzz from that rather than spending 500 million and having people say we bought it again.

So lets back the manager and the team rightthrough to the academy and not come on here slagging our kids off saying so and so isn`t good enough, because if all you doubters knew the game that well you`d be in a United tracksuit coaching them or picking the team.

Rant over.

I thank you

Samster1

Believable4 Unbelievable1

Samster

The diffferance is there isn't a Beckham / Scholes / Butt / Giggs / G.Neville / P.Neville coming through of that quality.
It's not very often you get 5-6 players that come through the youth system and all break into the first team around the same time.
There is no guarantee that the players coming through in your academy are going to make the grade and are going to break into the first team so what should we do?
Not buy anyone until we get another crop of young starts that all break in at the same time which could be in another 50 years time.
You have to move with the times, we have to but to keep up with the likes of City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs etc.
We are all fully behind Fergie but surely even you can see that we are desperately short in the central midfield area?

Simmo

Agree2 Disagree0

Totally agree Samster, our two most legendary teams were the Busby Babes and Fergie's Fledglings.

Simmo, we know this but we have bought young to add to the youths we have. Secondly we have moved with the times hense, Rooney, Valencia, Nani, Anderson, Vidic, Ferdinand etc. But lets not overload ourselves with new signings so we end up souless like City or Chelsea. I still have high hopes for Anderson, Cleverly, Powell and Tunners. Who are all players we put or will put effort and faith into, and therefore can be considered at least semi-homegrown.

Red Joe

Agree0 Disagree1

I think we went through this last year , every second text was morrison this pogba that , we dont need to buy x player cos with these 2 we are sorted for years.
united will always promote youth but they have to be good enough i would love us to win the league with homegrown kids but who was the last world class player to come through the ranks?

Agree0 Disagree0

Ah our kids Samster

In 95 96 our team was full of Schmeichel, Parker, Irwin, Bruce, Pallister, Giggs, Cantona, Keane, Cole. I'm normally one for long winded posts, however this shall be shortish and sweet...

Just because Kagawa didn't cost us £30/£40 million doesn't mean he isn't worth £30/£40 million. He is a great young player and if you took time out of your days to look at him play instead of spending time looking at what other clubs are doing you'd see this. Good day.

Have I read that right ,the reason we haven't been able to strengthen the cm for 3 years isnt that we can't compete at the top end of the market for the player that fergy must no we need , it is in fact all fergys fault as he is to stubborn and doesn't have a plan B.
I know you have been preaching for a while that united would pay x amount for a big name player and used every excuses under the sun to prove it but to blame the manager is a bit low.

Here's one for you pal maybe fergy hasn't quite lost his marbles but infact knows the club either won't or can't afford the players he feels would improve the cm so he is having to buy good young players and develop them.
Infact I think he said something along those lines at the start of the transfer window
Jred

Believable1 Unbelievable2

I have never said the manager has lost his marbles, that is you making things up. My feelings haven't changed. I believe we do not have the funds to compete with City and Chelsea and never will have the funds to outbid them unless the FFP rules are implemented correctly and the clubs abide by the rules. We cannot compete with the sugar daddy owned clubs but I believe we do have the money to buy a Hazard or a Modric. Our cashflow now is better than it's EVER been under the Glazers and that has never stopped us buying Berbatov, Anderson, Nani, Carrick, Hargreaves, DDG, Jones etc. The manager will have a few targets and he will try and sign them. The fact he doesn't have a plan C or D sometimes IMO is down to his stubbornness. I think he feels that if we start going for plan C or plan D players we will end up like Liverpool. That is my thoughts on the matter.

You can twist this any way you like, but my opinion will not change.

Fergy
"We are not like other clubs who can spend fortunes on proven goods. We invest in players who will be with the club for a long time, who will create the character of the club and the excitement for our fans"
fergy before the transfer market opened and now we have bought powell and kagawa sort all fits.

so to suggest fergys only target is modric and his to stubborn to look else were might be wrong .
Maybe fergy still knows what his doing and has a plan.

I totally agree about C, D and E and not settling for second best.

But look at this way, man.

You need to get to work to earn your money and pay your way in life; if your car breaks down (Giggs and Scholes), you need a new one to get to work.

You may not be able to afford the Ferrari, or the BMW. But you still need a fricking car, or you're out of a job.

RED_SKY

Agree0 Disagree0

Completely agree RED_SKY, that was my point. Last summer the manager put all of his eggs into one basket as he thought Nasri was in the bag. Then when Nasri's head got turned we could only turn to Sneijder who was the only other "quality" player available. Modric & Goetze were unavailable at the time. So when we couldn't convince Sneijder to lower his demands (demands so high that Chelsea and City couldn't sign him) the manager left it at that and didn't look elsewhere for a lesser quality player. I think the manager should have looked at someone like Witsel or Cabaye, but he obviously thought they are not much better than what we already have (hindsight a wonderful thing). I fear the same could happen again this summer with Modric falling through and Goetze being unavailable, will the manager stop looking? Or will he go for a lesser quality (plan D) player like Dembele who is available and then have the critics saying we only signed him because he was cheap. I think the manager has to put his stubbornness to one side and sign a player even if he isn't "top quality".

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, I cannot see what your double post has to do with anything. I never said I didn't think the manager was stubborn, I said I never said he has lost his marbles. The manager has always been stubborn, probably why he has been so successful.

Also the manager's statement about not signing the finished article is what the manager would usually do I agree, but he has made exceptions (Berbatov) and trying to sign Modric, Benzema, Sneijder & Nasri would also be examples.

A lot of rumours about us looking at various Everton players and in particular Baines, who personally I rate highly and would be happy to have at the club.
A lot of supporters on here saying we should go for a younger player so while we are looking at toffee players what about their young left back Luke Garbutt?
One of my best friends is a toffee supporter and rates Garbutt very highly, apparently he is a quality left back who is also good at CB and midfield and he thinks could take over from Baines no problem.

All the latest rumors are about attacking wide men or strikers but surely a more central minded midfielder is required? news on berba leaving has all but disappeared and now PSG look likely to get Ibrahimovic, they wont need berba too? so that leaves us with 4 strikers with the likes of young, valancia, nani, giggs, cleverly, kagawa and now powell as attacking midfield options. i can see us playing a 4-2-3-1 formation next year with carrick and scholes being the only players to play as the holding 2 in midfield. Phil jones is an option to play there, however i still think we need another. Baines at left back looks certain if you read all the rumours but think an out right centre mid is what we require. Thoughts?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

Powell will be used as a central midfielder, Cleverly is a central midfielder as is Anderson, Giggs, Scholes and Carrick. So what you are saying is wrong. Regardless, we need a midfield signing to improve the quality of the position, not the numbers.

I've been on this site everyday since the season ended and have been thoroughly entertained at times. I just wanted to post something as i get very confused about peoples views of the Glazers and if they are good, bad, dont know either way etc. Now i'm no pro Glazer person but neither am i an anti Glazer person either. I've never been happy with the debt that was placed on the club by the Glazers but they are business men and i dont blame them for doing so as if i could take over the Yankees the same way i would happily do it this minute. I blame Fifa, Uefa and most of all the FA for letting it ever happen in the first place. But i would like to know by how much the Glazers have increased revenue since they took over the club, they seem to me to have done a good job of this and that has meant the debt has not affected us too much. We have still spent money on good players and i believe that if it wasnt for Fergie's tight scottish background we would have spent more than we have. Now it looks as though they are looking to rid us of the debt in time for the next manager and FFP coming into effect. This can only be a good thing along with the increases in revenue as we will be in a fantastic position compared to nearly every other big club in england/europe. If it hadnt been for the debt put on the club we could have no complaints and if this debt is finally gone can we finally have a united club once more without some fans more intent on attacking the owners than supporting the team we all love. I have never understood why a certain group of our supposed fans deserted and began FC United, yes they may not have agreed with the takeover but is that really a reason to jump ship? I for one could never do that even if the club went tits up and we ended up in the 2nd division but then again i am a true red like so many others and have supported this great club since i was a toddler and City were finishing above us back in the 80's.

Sorry for such a long post guys n girls. Any comments welcome and no doubt the Glazer haters will be on slagging me off but i am a red, dont care who the owners are, where we finish in the league and who plays for us, i'm proud to have the badge on my chest, we have had much harder times in the past and no obe should ever forget how bad it can get (Feb 58 - never forget)

Brendan

Believable4 Unbelievable2

Brendan I have not come on to attack you because you are obviously misguided or not very bright. It doesn't matter if the Glazers increase the revenue of the club if all the money is going out of the club and into their pockets. You really need to educate yourself as to how much money has gone out of the club and then think about if it had been spent on players or facilities. Oh yes and please please don't mention Feb 58 to try and justify arguments about those leeches. I AM KLOOT

Agree0 Disagree0

I've got a comment - great post!

I'm Glazer-neutral like you but can see that so long as we clear our debt and remain reasonably successful in the mean time we will be in a great position. Obviously I'm against the debt in a big way but respect their ability to increase revenues so drastically. It would be interesting to see the figures of debt repayments v increase in revenue

I too have never understood the attitude of 'I'll just go and support another team because I don't like how things are run'. There is only one team, for me

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

IAMKLOOT if it was a test of who were brighter believe me you'd never get close. Its typical of someone who is so narrow minded, if someone doesnt agree with you they are obviously thick. Also, never ever say i use 58 as anything other than to show that times can be much much harder. It was nothing to do with the Glazers so read a post properly before commenting in future. I am a man united fan, not a trophy fan or an owner fan. I will support United no matter where we are or what we win unlike most people like yourself.

Brendan

Brendan

Agree1 Disagree1

Well said brendan. I fully understand that the glazers have laden the club with debt and dont like the way they have spent the clubs money on repayments not players. However it has always been obvious that they are businessmen and thus need the team to be successful for the model to work. The obvious need to compete and thus the ipo to reduce/remove the debt is only because its what the business needs to maintain success and popularity (cash generation). The glazers dont support us they just intend to make money like any other business that said I always will support united and realise that the ipo is good for the club. Bookedredmole

Agree0 Disagree0

Brendan I am sensitive about 58 as i have a relative who died in the crash and I don't see the point in you quoting it as a comparison to what is happening now. I AM KLOOT

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair enough I AM KLOOT i understand how you'd be sensitive as i have also lost someone very close in very similar circumstances. There was mo disrespesct for the people who passed away its just that a lot of people come on here suicidal at the supposed state of the club when in actual fact things really arent that bad. We have some debt put on us by the owners but the same owners have worked hard and raised our annual income by £100+ million so really we are in no worse a position than before they arrived. If they hadnt come along we more than likely wouldnt have increased the income by so much so dont see such a huge problem. The only thing now is the FFP which will make things harder which is why they are trying the New York flotation which will pay off the debt quicker than originally neccessary. I am no Glazer fan but feel the bashing they get is at times harsh. But being yanks maybe they deserve it for that anyway :-)

Is it only me that was embarrassed with Fergie's press conference - show casing Shinji and Powell -with all the other big 4 clubs showcasing establised talent like Adebayor, Hazard, Giroud etc.

With the recent postings on here I thought I woud add what I feel is closer to the truth - we will not be makng any marquee signings - Hazard to Chelski, Motinho to Spurs, Modric to Madrid - should tell us all the real story at our beloved club.

We will only be signing players in the less than £20m category, if we are lucky. We can not compete with our contemporaries on fees and wages in this modern era of Citeh and PSG.

The reason for this is our own financial woes and the Glazers bulking at the situation with Berbatov - £31.5 m, £100k/wk wages and not used in almost 2 years, as well as deals such as Bebe and Owen.

I still believe that the talented young squad we have - Cleverly, Wellbeck, Hernandez, Jones, Young, Shinji and Powell will put in a valiant effort next season. But can't help but think what we would look like with a Sneijder, Motinho in the middle for us and another striker up front - Lewandoski, Benezma or Gomez type.

Baines will be our only other signing..... dismal for a club of our global standing and reputation......

Believable4 Unbelievable7

Spot on mate, ive been posting on this site for a while now saying the same as you, and i have been slaughtered for it, people need to wake up, we cannot attract top class names anymore, fact.

Embarrassed at our signings? Kagawa is a 30million pound player with 4 or 5 years on a contract Powell is one of the brightest talents this country has aswell ..... Adebayor is losing it he has the odd good game and Giroud is so over rated its hilarious ... We are smart in the market where others jump at the gun and just offer as much as possible

Adebayor and Giroud are hardly anything to write home about. Kabaka got player of the season in the Bundesliga, do you forget there's player like Robben, Gomez, Muller, Ribery, Hummels etc all playing in that league?

Wow nice back handed dig at the greatest manager that ever lived! Yes Fergie has made mistakes in the transfer market what manager hasn't But never forget this is the man that plucked Ronny, Chicharito, Ole and the like from obscurity and turned them into United legends.buying players is never an exact science some work out (the majority in fergies case)and some don't.If what we have read is true we have made major offers for players like Hazzard and Modric and i believe a delegation is out in Brazil talking to Moura's people, hardly the actions of a club that is dying on its arse. Of course i am not naieve enough to believe that the debt on the club does not impact on team affairs and matters probably do have to be budgeted and handled with care and caution, but i can tell you one thing there is no one i would rather have steering this ship than the great SAF himself. How do you know that Kagawa will not be a total revelation and that Hazzard will not live up to his overinflated opinion of himself. The quiet and dignified response Shinji gave at his press conference yesterday were in stark contrast to the "tweet every detail to the world" and act like I've actually achieved something in the game attitude of hazzard. i knew who i was pleased with when the deals were done. This so called worst United team under Fergie got 89 points last season and were pipped on goal diff, We will have our skipper back(as good as any new signing)and with a few tweaks the Red lion will roar again.

Agree5 Disagree1

Ah so we have to sign a 'big name' for it to be worthwhile.

I am starting to wish we had been chasing Kagawa all summer and finally managed to get him at the end of August, that would have pleased the fans more, as we signed him up early everyone forgets and wants lots more signings.

We need 2 new players, Baines is one and a midfielder is another, if we get one I would be delighted and think we have the squad to fight on all fronts.

GDS

Agree1 Disagree1

Giroud and Adebayor are hardly marqee signings are they.
Kagawa looks like a great talent and alot of clubs were looking at him and he chose United.
Powell is a buy for the future but there is no guarantee that he will turn out to be a really good player but Fergie must have seen something in him.
I do sort of understand where you are coming from. My main worry is that Center of Midfield area, still no sign of anybody coming in and i like you do believe that Baines will be the only other signing which is worrying because we will have to watch another season of Scholes playing 30 plus games, Ryan Giggs continiously giving the ball away, Anderson playing his usual 10 - 15 games a season because he's always injured and who knows how long Cleverley will stay fit for?
Fletcher in my opinion is finished!
The only main stay has been Carrick who is nearly 32.

Simmo

Some fans make me embarrased to be a red, if we had paid £35 million for Kagawa and £20 million for Powell you'd all be at home beating one off about them but because we were shrewd and got them at fantastic prices they aren't good enough, what a bunch of brain dead numpties some people are :-)

Brendan

Haha OP I have to hand it to you, your post made me laugh. Established talent and Giroud in the same sentence is just funny. He has had 1 good season and he is established? Yet you are embarrased about Kagawa despite him having been outstanding in the Bundesliga for the last 2 seasons.

Regardless if we sign anyone else or not we have made 1 top quality signing in Kagawa and signed 1 future star in Nick Powell for a combined maximum of just over 20 million. Good business in my opinion.

Here comes Sneijder...

Gar

Agree0 Disagree0

Thiago is too similar to Kagawa so wouldnt work we need Javi Garcia he is top notch

Agree0 Disagree0

I am of the opinion that we needed 5 signings this summer. We have our CAM in Kagawa and a youngster to effectively replace Pogba so I would still think 2CM's 1 to bolster the quality and 1 to replace Fletch. With the 5th signing a top LB (Baines).

The squad as a whole could do with a couple of replacements so youngsters like Tunners, Petrucci and Powell can take over from Giggs, Ando and Carrick eventually but that could be 12-24 months away. Smallings squad place will need filled in 12 months when he takes over fully from Rio and a young striker like W Keane should take the fourth striker spot when fit again.

so there is the future progression but right now with Scholes and Giggs only capable of covering the amount of games 1 youngster could, Ando consistently injured (even when not he consistently fails to deliver imo), Fletch more than likely finished, Clevs still not fully integrated into the team and Carrick who can do a job but still gets exposed under pressure.

That's a pretty weak midfield. We have seen recently the manager has pulled Rooney back, Jones forward, Park inside, Rafa forward just to fill gaps when struggling with an injury or 2. So with no reinforcement in there we will be just as exposed as the last few years against average CMers.

With Mods and Moutinho looking at moving to other clubs where does that leave us? In a position where every man and his dog can see we need a CMer of top quality and yet Fergie seems to have all his eggs in a clearly Madrid bound Modric shaped basket. I for one hope to high heaven he does have a plan B,C and D if needed. There are enough CMers that will be or can be made available if we stump up the cash that will improve our quality but as has been highlighted the managers stubbornness could see him throw his toys out again if he doesn't get his way with Modric then stick with what we have.

If so we are further behind than last year imo. No sign of Fletch, Park gone, Powell new to the set up, Giggs/Carrick and Scholes older by a year. IMO we need 1 or 2 in there and can use Giggs, Ando and Scholes sparingly (if Ando is even with us).

Players like Cabaye, Strootman, Witsel, Khedira, Sahin amongst others are likely to either be available now or will be if we pay what is needed. I really hope we sign a minimum 1 CMer but am really hoping for 2.

Let's get back to the old Man Utd way of being positive and take the game to teams more.Last season really hurt losing on goal difference, apart from letting loose on a few occaisions we were content to pass the hell out of teams without any real cutting edge.
Why do we always change tactically to combat other teams[it usually ends in tears]let's get at them and let them worry about us.

Hopefully if we change our style to accomodate Kagawa and get another positive signing we will get the title back and in STYLE !!

I keep hearing we are way off city/Chelsea!!

I think with goal difference being the deciding marging last year an the lose of our most influential player our captain out for a big chunk of the season, we will be fine going into this season.

I think if we would of spent 30 million on kagawa people would be raving about what a great signing we was. The fact we got him at a fair price people are underestimating him.

If we can keep ando and Clevs fit we have 2 very good cm's at great ages.

If we sign baines which looks likely , will be used as a bit part winger, which will give us more defensive stability (which we needed badly last year).

So fergie has said "were trying for one more player" maybe 2 but at least he's confirmed were after one more.

Personally I think the BAINES rumours arnt 100%

Evra was captain last season with vidic injured and after the racism with Suarez, and he's a united fan fav.

Yeah he's been poor the past 12 months but we have, jones smalling and Evans who can play left back so I don't think fergis main target is BAINES.

Hazard was originally target number 1, and with him going Chelsea we still have 30+ million to spend, MODRIC I think has been out priced with a move to united with levy being such a pri*k when it comes to transfers

But I think fergie is trying his damdest to try and get a STRIKER, cause hazard would proberly been played as a striker along with Rooney.

Maybe van persie, we only really have Rooney who scores, welbeck only got 12 which for a striker is poor.

Hernandez has been injured and berbatov just doesn't suit our game.

People get carried away with their pessamism on this site
Lets look at reality-we lost the title last year on goal difference-this year we get vida back, hopefully ando n cleverley can stay fit(dont forget they were on fire before injuries last year)
De gea has got a year under his belt n wont make the mistakes he did early on last season
Scholesey mite not play every game but Was the player of the year from january onwards and still has a big part to play this year
Add to that kagawa and for the lesser part powell n maybe baines-lets face the reality we are twice as strong as last year
Scholes maybe ageing but i can gaurentee he will still be one ov our top performaers this year
Stop bitching-realise wot we ave got rather than who all you armchair managers think we shud have

Believable2 Unbelievable2

It should tell you something when you highlight 38 year old Scholes to hold our midfield together.

Most of last season people said City hadn't done it and could fall with the pressure, sure they nearly did but now they won it they will have gained confidence and will strengthen as well. It will be harder for them to be the team to beat but we will watch them win it again if the right 2 or three further players don't arrive. We will struggle with second as well, remember it took us dropping to third in years gone by before SAF pushed on.

It is not bitching when we can see the needs we have only to be told maybe one more. We now can see the financial problems highlighted and that is no longer acceptable

Red Man

Agree2 Disagree0

We only just lost the title but it was a poor league last year , the standard at the top of the table was no were near what it has been over the last 10 years.
Our performance in europe was a concern we struggled in nearly every game and were given a lesson by bildao, which when you consider only a couple of years ago we set THE standard is a concern.

Anderson and Cleverley played well for 3 games last season so to say they were on fire is an exaggeration, if you think we are going to win the league and CL with those 2 as our main midfield pair thats fine but there is a thin line between optimism and delusion I'm sorry to say.

Wake up mate - if City were more experienced, they'd have won the title by February. Without SERIOUS reinforcements, we're gonna be competing for 4th this season.

Cleverley and Anderson played well together all through the preseason tour and in the Shield as well as those "three games". Not saying they as a pairing are good enough to compete with the best team, but they are good enough to open up and destroy the weaker teams. I still want us to sign a Modric, but will not panic if we don't.

So AC are selling Silva and Zlatan for 51 million.. Seems a bit of a bargain.. But you see, the sickener for milan fans is that this money will be spent on berlusconi's(AC owner) presidential campaign in 2013.. And its probably a futile campain due to his questionable personal life.. Seedorf, Nesta, Gattuso, Zambrotta, Van Bommel already left this summer.. So we aint the only club with a big fat meanie as an owner:)

Utd are like 99% sure not to sign Lucas Moura. Media throw around a name and see what sells then bang on about it till he ends up else where.
Plus I am beginning to think that maybe some of these transfer stories about big names are released by Utd to throw the fans off the fact that we are miles away from competing against fellow big teams.
Surely if Utd had been in for all those big names that have been talked about for the last 3 or 4 seasons we would have managed to sign 1 or 2. Yet we miss miss and miss again...and use half a**ed excuses.
If we do sign Moura I will be very very happy he is a star in the making. Plus I will be happy to eat my hat so you can all call me up on this, but as I said I think its a rather safe bet.

Stuey,

I bother because he seems to have decided to go on a one man crusade against me and say things that are clearly not true.

They make me laugh but people like Mick the Fireman have joined in and seems to have started to believe the rubbish he spouts.

I appreciate he is passionate about it and negative but I just feel there is no point in dwelling on the past and look to the future. We had one season with no trophies, if that keeps happening I will panic. I am sure he was this upset in 1998 when we won nothing, and 1999 wasn't such a bad year ;)

saf said today at the press conference that he expects '1 or 2 more signings, but probably only 1.' the one expected to arrive is baines and the one he is hoping to arrive is modric but i think even saf has given up hope on this one wit modric expected to join madrid.

another reason not to expect a cm to arrive if modric doesnt sign is that saf said today that he contacted dario gradi and asked him if nick powell could play in cm, dario said this was powells best position. saf then stated that they would develope him as a cm.

baines to be utds last piece of business this summer if modric doesnt sign. dont get caught up in the lucas moura rumours its all paper talk.

What that saids to me Is that the 1 or 2 players they are looking at are europeon and been playing at the euros...... So Lucas could just be a smokescreen... This is a quote tonight from the MEN. It will make Sydney shudder because Manchesters own paper suggests money is an issue something Sydney has consistently denied is an issue.

Ferguson refused the opportunity to reveal even which position he was looking at, just as a Reds official quickly moved on from potential questioning over that IPO, which is intended for launch in the United States in the coming weeks. It was that move which contained the phrase "our indebtedness could adversely affect our health and competitive position", which was the first official admission that the massive debt burden the Glazer family have lodged against United could be a problem. Futures That debt currently stands at £423million, although no explanation was ever offered as to how the Glazers managed to pay off £249million of high-interest payment-in-kind notes in 2010.

It needs to be said that this is quite unusual because MEN journalists rely on a close relationship with the club and rarely are so critical and this is subtle but clearly critical.

SAF must know one more is not enough and perhaps this is the first time there is criticism so openly but I note there is no proclamation from SAF of how great the owners are

Red man
on the same day andy green has said in his blog that the family are struggling to pay the interest on the money they borrowed to pay of the PIKs.
its claimed the the money borrowed is tied in the the amount of debt at the club and like the original pik if the debt doesnt come down the interest goes up , only this time it is the glazers paying not the club.
the other rumours icoming out of the US about the Glazers is that Darcie, Edward and Kevin don't like having wealth tied up in this pesky soccer club that Joel, Avram and Bryan are so fixated with.

Red Man, I have never said that money isn't an issue, but we will never be able to compete with the sugar daddy owned clubs and we will always struggle to get players who RM and Barcelona badly want to sign debt or no debt. I have always said that I believe there is money to sign top players and I still believe that. I think people suggesting we never had no intention of signing Hazard and we have no intention of signing Modric are talking nonsense. Money is there, but not there to blow on any player. I also think we would learn more about the manager's intentions when players like Berbatov, Kiko, Anderson etc are moved on. I get the feeling we are struggling to offload our 'deadwood' as many call it. I also think much depends on Nani too. Will we receive an acceptable bid for him? Then will he want that particular move? I think the manager's comments yesterday of 1 maybe 2, maybe based on if the squad stayed the same. If Berbatov is sold or Nani is sold then we will see more activity than 1 or maybe 2 signings.

Jred, just adds to my opinion that they are not doing this IPO to produce more funds for us. Now i want to talk about Leighton Baines. There have been one or two things about this rumour that bothers me.

First off he doesn't look like a "Fergie signing", he is over priced and he is older than the players we tend to sign. Also Sir Alex stated he wanted to inject pace into our team and you'd hardly call Baines rapid.

The price is the first stumbling block IMO, 16/18m for a player on about the same level as Enrique or Izaguirre both of which either cost or would cost around the 8m mark. I know you pay over the odds for english players but 8/10m is excessive to say the least. And with Sir Alex stating no value in the market all the time then if he was to sign Baines for that much it just wouldn't make sense.

Then there is the actions of Baines(who is an Everton fan btw). If you were a player playing at the euro's while your current club were trying to agree a deal for you to move to Man Utd what would you do once your commitment to the national team had finished? I would have thought you'd have gone back home and try and sort out your future not go on holiday like Baines did. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Then we have Evra who although hasn't been great is a player Sir Alex rates and is a key member of the dressing room. Baines would demand a start at this stage in his career. Then we have Fabio who we've sent out on loan so he can get some experiance as he hasn't been able to push past Evra in the pecking order, Sir Alex rate him highly too. And at his age he will need games, if we signed Baines he would be first choice for 3/4 years by witch time Fabio will be in his mid twenties having hardly played a game for us.

I think we should be in for a LB but for me Baines isn't the right fit. I would imagin we'd want someone younger but ready to challenge, probably someone cheap who would be a solid squad player, pushing Evra this year and competiting with Fabio next year.

For these reasons i feel that we won't be signing Baines. I think we have all fallen into the trap of wanting a new LB so much we've ignored the obvious, and once the media linked us with Baines the idea has just lodged it's self in our brains. I like him as a player but i don't think he is the right player for us.

One thing that does seem odd though is the media coverage would surgest we have been in talks with Everton, and figures of 16 and 18m seem quite certain. So if we're not in for Baines who could that be for? Barkley Fellaini or Rodwell seem the obvious choices, with a figure that high i would have thought Fellaini was more likely. We have also had Jagielka and Moyes saying offers over 20m for Fellaini would be hard to turn down, that seems like they are trying to convince someone to up their bid.

Shappy

Believable8 Unbelievable0

I agree that it's an odd situation, as Evra will not be sold this year, and I can't see him being happy on the bench. Furthermore, both are LBs only, and cannot fill in elsewhere. Ignoring Fabio even, I just don't see how bringing in Baines helps much as it will instantly create dressing room problems and at his age he can't be considered a long-term solution at LB. Fryers leaving is a real problem as it leaves us without backup for Evra with Fabio on loan. I agree that Evra has been poor for a few years now, and is a complete defensive liability, but unless we sell Evra, I don't see how he agrees to being on the bench at a position where rotation isn't that common. -KG

Agree0 Disagree0

Evra was poor last season and we leaked lots of goals down his side. He prefers to play up the field so maybe midfield could become an option for him, more so with us working on a tighter budget.

Agree0 Disagree1

If were on a tight budget why over spend by around 8m on Baines? There are other options our there available for less which would give us more money to spend on a midfielder. Would you rather sign Baines and Dembele or Moutinho/Modric and Izaguirre? I'm not saying that is what will happen, just that Baines doesn't look like a typical United signing.
