Well 6 games started this season for michael carrick and the 6 all wins. it's no coincidence. the man is class and calmness personified. He does the simple things well and never panics, I don't believe we'd be on this 6 game run if he wasn't back, mainly because of the effect he's had on a weak ever changing defence. although we have rode our luck at times, Moving forward, We are going to be a difficult team to beat with all players fit.
P.s eds and fellow posters hope you all have a fantastic christmas

I couldn't agree more mate, top top top class CM that is so underrated.

When England needed balanced and intelligent CM to actually give lampard and Gerrard the ball in the right area's, England wanted the bigger name, but less quality in Barry.

Shame really, with him in there we would of utilised that area a lot better than we did.

Our Gain I guess.

I agree but think with a fully fit squad a rb and cb in jan and we get cement 3rd and win the fa cup

I too agree . obviously :)
And DDG was sensational too. If it wasn't for him, we would not be in this position right now. Hope we tie him up with another long term contract soon before Madrid comes knocking

The score could have been 6.4. As predicted Rodgers went with Sterling up front on his own, a negative save his skin option. What was interesting was Rodgers walking to the tunnel at half time, his head was down and the image stuck with me.
We were awful at the beginning, I don't know why we insist on going backwards to retain the ball, then we give it the full backs wide when facing their own goal with someone on them and particularly Young looks awkward with it, Valencia just about gets away with it given his strength. However credit to Young he did really well overall in a role that isn't natural to him. I wasn't convinced about having so many forwards, it was almost like we wanted to play in and around their box so it seemed we either attacked or defended. Watching us at the beginning we were awful then suddenly swept forward and put the ball in the net, surreal. I said a few weeks ago De Gea seems to have gained the status of Shilton in the late 70's, get past the defence and Shilton was almost unbeatable. As Sterling was one on one you felt there was only one outcome, a goal, yet DDG now has an iconic status, it really does make a difference to the team and that moment his reputation grew, then grew more when he pulled off several brilliant saves. Psychologically the opposition have to get past him.
I have to say that Evans was shocking, it really isn't difficult either passing it to a red shirt or putting the ball down the field yet his contribution reminded me of his performance against MK Dons when he was so poor. A centre back who can play is a necessity, just not Evans.
We looked better balanced when Herrera came on, he doesn't waste possession and the difference in RVP recently is notable, he looks up for it now.
For them Lovren looked like his confidence had gone and their left back looked vulnerable, they can be got at, and I think they know that.
It was a good win

Believable8 Unbelievable1

Good read! I think Fellaini's passes are a bit lose at times, the pace of the game was too fast for him in the beginning but he had a better second half. Will be good to have AdM back!

Agree 100% on the point you made on EVANS, he has been very poor with his defending and passing.
Always looks shaky when has the ball and made similar mistakes he made while playing against MK DONS.
Without DE GEA's saves we would have slaughtered our defense by now.

14 Dec 2014 20:10:22
Very entertaining game today. De Gea was phenomenal again, covering up for the porous back three. And today it was his positioning, rather than acrobatics.

Carrick was steady again, outside of that back pass from Evans. Jones looked very shaky on the ball, and he looks on the verge of a mistimed tackle.

Young and Valencia did well again. Valencia had the turning point of the game, megging Joe Allen to set up Rooney. Great strike and then momentum shifted our way. Valencia can improve defensively, by learning to really tuck in when pressure is mounting, but he was outstanding today.

I was furious with Fellaini first half, yellow just 4 min in, and some awful passes, but he grew into the game.
Mata had a very good game, scoring, assisting, constantly running into spaces, and he even showed some defensive intensity.

Delighted for Rooney and Van Persie to score. Rooney had a good game, but he is not the answer at center mid. He is vulnerable to getting stripped. But he works hard to defend, and he is still outstanding at arriving in the box.

Young James Wilson put in a good effort, nothing to be ashamed of. And RVP put himself about all day, seems back to his old self.

Two wishes:
1. Ander Herrera to start every week. He is a more complete center mid than either Mata or Fellaini.
2. Give Falcao a start now. He looks so dynamic out there. His awareness is very impressive.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

14 Dec 2014 21:52:06
Have to agree with your two wishes, it seems that the only man who doesn't want Herrera to start is lvg, and falcao looked sharp when he came on, not sure if he can keep that up for 90 mins though. Can't wait to have Herrera, di maria and falcao all on the pitch at the same time!

We're almost at the half way stage and I'll sort out a mid season update on the top 6 / bottom 3 predictions. as you would expect, some posters have had more success than others but with Liverpool and Spurs struggling, nobody has the correct top 4 in any order.

Interestingly, 19 posters had Southampton being relegated and whilst they have had a tough month, they have surprised most of us. 19 also tipped Swansea to go down and so far they look solid.

It's tricky with 100 combinations to review but after 19 games, I'll post the closest poster so far.

Hi Guys

Maybe I'm missing something but after reading some of the posts today I don't understand some of the negativity
I realise that other than the Hull game we have not dominated sides and against Arsenal and Southampton we were very lucky to win.We have done this with the worst injury situation we have probably ever had.We cannot play a back 4 due to not having 4 fit defenders.Players are playing out of position due to injuries. Some of our so called stars have not quite fired or have been injured.I could carry on but I think you all get the gist.
The bottom line is we are in third place 8 points behind Chelsea and still not played anywhere near our potential. We are coming up to a period where we generally do well.We are grinding out results as we have in previous title winning seasons so I think there is a lot to be positive about.
So come on lads and lassies cheer up its nearly Christmas and we have just beaten Liverpool 3-0.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

Bazza

You are right. I am enjoying watching us and we have improved a great deal despite the injuries and not having a settled team. Only 2 teams have scoffed more and only 3 have conceded fewer. However, people started talking about us winning the title this year and I just don't see that happening. We have been lucky way more often than unlucky this year so far, it won't last forever and I just don't see City and Chelsea drooping many points.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Dec 2014 17:48:57
We have nothing at the club that will improve our central defence, no matter whos fit and who isn't. Evans is a mistake waiting to happen, Smalling will never get any better and Jones has gone backwards. He's the only central defender that can maybe improve. Rojo is ok but 20M worth?
IMO we still need a bully in midfield and 2 centre backs. Fellaini did well in breaking things up, but a CM that can't pass is a liability.
Rooney, RVP and Wilson look fine and Falcao will come good.
Had Liverpool had even 1 good striker on today I think they would have beaten us. For DDG to be MOTM match again says it all.
But after everything else, 3 stolen points are as good as any!

Believable2 Unbelievable4

There are certainly big improvements needed in midfield and defence, but if anyone doubts that we have moved on from last year consider this - we're third, we've just beaten Liverpool 3-0 and everyone feels a bit underwhelmed.

Agree1 Disagree0

Good point Prof. And if anyone still doubts we have moved on, we started with last year's players - none of the summer arrivals started, Hererra and Falcao came on as subs. And we are still carrying injuries. Players that looked disinterested last year suddenly look eager again.

Agree1 Disagree0

Ot7 agreed 100%, it's great to beat liverpool but we are off the top teams by a long way!

Agree1 Disagree1

Strange game today liverpool could of had 3 or 4, I think the liverpool of last season would of.
I think we have had 9 shots in the last 2 games and scored 5 goals the opposition must of had 30 and scored 1 .

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Dec 2014 17:19:03
What a great If somewhat bizarre game. A good 3-0 win but DDG was MOm which tells its own story. On another day things could have been very different. However, that's 6 in a row and that takes some doing.

I thought everyone contributed positively today although we saw some of the short comings. Carrick was immense again and moving to CB might extend his career. Fellaini broke up play well but still misplaces passes too often (he wasn't alone today). I thought Mata was much more involved and Rooney and RVPworked all afternoon. We are not far away from a very strong line up.

As someone else said, when everyone is fit and we hit form, we could be in for a treat.

what a great result today . decent performance to be fair, but why herrera didn't start again today is a complete mystery to me . he's being wasted on the bench, and i really can't understand why . felleini did well breaking up play but his first touch and passing ability is far from great . i was just waiting for him to get a second yellow to be honest but to his credit he stayed on the field lol . our midfield is much slower with mata and felliani together, herrera speeds things up for us so that's what i can't quite understand why he's benched every week :-( but 3 points are 3 points, i think though with shaw, di maria, raphael and herrera put into the side i'm sure we can cement 3rd spot quite comfortably, fingers crossed, can't wait to get on site in the morning and remind a few liverpool fans of todays result lol

Believable2 Unbelievable1

I thought fellaini was poor to start with but was immense in the second half putting lots of important challenges. He may not be my favorite player but credit where its due.

United scored the goals. Really Poor game. Mata offside means nothing. I'd rather say offside than say that was defending. DDG excellent game. Liverpool were dross against a poor united side. We have been dross all season.(to many reasons) United will be in the top four. Us most likely 6th. It's been a dreadful premier league season. The level of performance and quality displayed has been lacklustre. Chelsea will walk away with the league and they are no Barcelona. Arsenals cracks are papered over by a star in sanchez, they have been found wanting. Thankfully soon Time for Christmas.
Happy forthcoming 2015

Fair play to you for pitching up. Agree with most of your post although I thought it was a great game. Very open, loads of chances, really entertaining. The problem for you is Suarez has gone and Sturridge is injured, not sure you spent the money wisely.

Agree2 Disagree0

When we have everyone fit, we will be a force.

We are winning games because the manager is using what he has at his disposal very well. He deserves a lot of credit for that IMO.

Rodgers sounds like Moyes in his post match press conferences/interviews of late. Not a good sign.

I think 6th is optimistic ;)

Agree4 Disagree0

Big Al,
Fair play to you for coming on, especially seeing as you haven't been round much lately. I thought your lot would struggle this season without Suarez, but I am really shocked at how bad you have actually been. As much as anything, I think the weight of expectation has got to the players and the manager.
I remember back in July I made a few light hearted predictions about Liverpool in the forthcoming (this) season. I think there were 7 of 8 all together. You responded by calling my post pitiful and lacking knowledge. So far, every single one of my predictions is correct!
Are you surprised nat how much you have missed Saurez, and do you still think that, in the long term, Liverpool will be a stronger team without him?
These are genuine questions by the way, not intended to rub your nose in it, despite today's result. Although to be fair, it has been quite a long time since United fans have been able to 'gloat'.

Agree2 Disagree2

Chelsea are better than Barcelona right now haha ;-)

Agree1 Disagree0

Betty
I can't remember. I'm busier with my kids plus there's nothing much constructive to write about Liverpool. The main problem falls in Rodgers hands. Suarez isn't a Liverpool player so I don't discuss him. The squad is young, talented and there's he'll of ability. However as Edd001 explained it better than anyone, Rodgers has reverted back to his first style of football at the club. The fast paced, high attacking aggressive style which made us successful has been abandoned. Atm i haven't the time to write a long post describing this season and Rodgers particularly but we are in a bad way. Rodgers is failing at every level. Selection, approach, coaching, management management, giving youngsters a chance, media. I could go on but this is a united page. If your interested Betty, have a look on the (other) site. Edd001 explains it in detail our down fallings including the players he' sought.
Throughout the league however the coaching and quality is vastly regressing imo

Agree2 Disagree0

Al

It is odd how you played (grit teeth) such direct exciting football last year and have now changed styles. S&S missing is not helping but as you say, why change what was a winning formula? I think his time is limited which is odd when, but for a couple of errors, you could have won the title last year.

Agree0 Disagree0

AJH
According to Edd001 we abandoned that approach because we ran out of steam at the end and so he wanted to play keep ball again which has been and will continue to be a disaster. The players have no confidence. There's no desire, urgency or movement. It's dross. Mate I could write a page about it but it's a united page.

Agree0 Disagree0

Al, in some ways Liverpool's season this year is similar to United's last season. Obviously I don't mean the change of manager as you haven't had one. What I mean is that the manager has tried to change the way the teams play, and the players look lost. Injuries to key players haven't helped of course, but in my opinion at least, the biggest factor of all is confidence. In sport, confidence is everything. It can be lost in one game, and it !at take months to recover it.
United are by no means the finished article at the moment, far from it. But after a few good results, even though some of the performances have been poor, we are starting to grow in confidence. In fact, I honestly think we have had some worse footballing performances in recent weeks than we had under Moyes. But Moyes destroyed the confidence and morale within the team, and at times they couldn't buy a win last season.
I think the same is happening at Liverpool. Yes the manager has made some strange team selections and played some bizarre tactics. But they are, like United last season, better than their performances would indicate. I am sure you will improve, but quite honestly, I think last seasons 'success' has paved the way for some unrealistic expectation from Liverpool fans.
At the start of the season, I thought this year would see the best and most exciting EPL season ever. Unfortunately, that has not materialised. I agree with your earlier comments , and I think it has been a very poor season so far in terms of quality. With the huge amounts of money invested by the English teams, I think the standard of football has been very disappointing.

Agree0 Disagree2

Ino Betty, have an enjoyable Christmas

Well boys, not going to hide, pretty much the result I predicted, as I said last week you definately have the better attack and keeper, de gea was superb as he has been all season, you will just have to hope Real Madrid don't come sniffing.the one thing I was surprised at was the number of chances we created, but it wasn't bad luck we lost, quite simply bad defending and poor finishing.on a positive note I really hope it pushes rogers nearer the exit door, the problems up front and at the back havnt been sorted since he came and he's had long enough.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

Rob - kudos for coming on here. One thing - is Borini injured? If not, this must be the end for him, surely?

Dear Google,
I have been using the 'Google Translate' app for some time and I've been very pleased with the results. However, I've found a problem. When translating "De Gea" from Spanish to English the result is simply "Gea". Could I suggest you amend this to "God-like".

I can see mata having another anonymous game today, hope I'm wrong though.

Agree0 Disagree4

Agree don't understand why Herrera isn't on, a midfield of Mata and Fellani just scare me Mata is so weak some of the ball boys push him off the ball and Fellani is nowhere near a top player watch his passing it's embarrassing. Liverpool playing 5 in the middle all of which can put a shift in worries me. 3 at the back again means we are going to be relying on luck again and how long before we run out of it. Must get the passing going early or this could make the Southampton performance look good

Agree1 Disagree0

Fellani touches the ball twice and loses it 2 tackles 2 free kicks one booking, yet Herrera is on the bench complete shambles 100% red card today for the clown

Agree0 Disagree2

Why is wilson on is beyond me. With rooney and RVp upfront and the wing play we have plenty, Herrera to shore up the middle and Wilson off for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's bad when I'm more nervous when Fellani has the ball more than when a Liverpool player has it

Agree0 Disagree1

Almost half time, Wilson has done nothing in 45 minutes of football. Why is he on the pitch and why is Herrera or Falcao on the subs bench. We are too open and need to shore up things.

Agree2 Disagree1

Create 2 chances and 2 up not bad but would like Fellani off before he gets a red get Herrera on now to control the midfield and hit them on the counter, Carrick has looked our best CB this season would play him there every week with blind and Herrera our possession would be a lot better especially when we are winning and just need to retain the ball.

Agree0 Disagree0

5 shots in the last 2 games 4 goals .
Thats taking your chances

Agree0 Disagree0

Jalmej

I agree on carrick most composed player on the pitch. If you look at the passage of play before the first goal not only does he give the ball away with a stupid pass he also goes to sleep when Sterling make the run behind him and almost scored but for ddg making a great save.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hard to blame Wilson. Neither he nor RVP are getting the ball. But no doubt we need Herrera out there, whoever comes off.

Great performances so far from Valencia, Carrick, De Gea, and Rooney.

What a nerve-wracking half!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Jones doing his best to bring them back into the game, what a save from ddg.

Meant jones on the earlier post.

Ed002 if you're around; you've alluded to the potential for significant managerial changes at Manchester United this summer on more than one occasion, can/will you elaborate?

I can't entirely understand the thought process behind a managerial revolving door process and LVG doesn't seem to have ruffled quite so many feathers as some thought he would - hence the confusion on my part.

Your insight would be welcome, if feasible of course.

Taking my wee fella down to the local for today's game. I can see the same excitement in his face as mine, when I was his age, getting ready to go with my dad.

Boring stuff like work and family, May get in the way of football as we get older, but days like this remind you why supporting Its counts for so much. It was always Liverpool. Never mind Chelsea and City, or even Arsenal back in the day. It was always Liverpool.

Said before, two weak defences, two average midfielder, but only one decent attack. That'll be enough, I hope.

Wherever you are, enjoy the game today. These matches are what football is all about.

Today will be interesting not least from the aspect of what is going on in Rodgers mind. Stories about John Henry considering replacing him will likely have added to the pressure of poor recent performances. A quick view on Liverpool is that I sense a similarity to ourselves last season, a bit of belief in the manager is missing, possibly from the summer purchases but also the team selection in Madrid. Today their players will be up for it, this game always does that yet my guess is that Rodgers present thinking will be affected by the pressure he is under and that he does not have the pacy high movement strikers, so he may well opt to stay tight in midfield be solid in front of his central defenders possibly protecting them with three central midfield players. I said a few days ago he may use Sterling up front on his own, especially as we push up with a high line.
We must control midfield first and foremost and I believe they will pack it and look to break, so I can't see Falcao starting. The roles Mata and Rooney play today will be key, I can't see the Scousers giving us much room so we need to hold it well in their half, we need to give Mata the ball facing their goal and work options through Rooney. The Scousers seem susceptible to set pieces and actually Fellaini at the back post may be useful, strange that method could be seen as key rather than flowing football but games like this can be decided by the first goal. Like I said a few days ago, control midfield control the game score first. I expect it to be tight and a close score.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

I think mata may miss out today.
You never know but i would be surprised if sterling plays the lone striker role.

Agree0 Disagree2

I'm intrigued by what the team selection and formation is today. I hope it isn't 3 at the back again but I think van Gaal might believe he has no other option due to injury and form. It's a shame Shaw isn't available , he'd have a field day today. Where would everyone put Carrick today? Centre half or base of a diamond? How we set up defensively is key today, because striker wise, it is no contest. Liverpool are there for the taking today.

Morning folks hope all is well,

The excitement has been building all week and I honestly believe this game could have a massive impact on our season. If we win and win well we should be full of confidence heading into this busy Xmas period, let's not talk about winning titles - all we can do is pick up as many points as we can and the rest will take care of itself, if its meant to be it's meant to be. On another note if Liverpool lose we'll be 10 points clear of them and pressure on Rodgers grows. He'll get the boot anyway once they start losing to teams the weekend after their Europa League games.

I have a feeling Rojo will score today, would love to see Falcao start but just don't think it'll happen. But if he fancies coming on to score the winner I'll not mind!!

Let's just hope we get the result we're looking for and LVG can start choosing from a fully fit squad again very soon so we can have a good crack at the second half of our season!!

UP THE REDS!!!!

And a bit of advice if you were a big built baby, no matter what gets said never say in front of your mother and wife that it couldn't have been that bad, you're sliding 14 lb of meat in and out your wife most nights for years and she's not went on about it and telling everyone!}

Love it bond lol

Congratulations, you couldn't ask for a better Christmas present. A win today would be the cherry on the cake.
I wanted to call our second daughter Georgie Irwin. Didn't happen unfortunately. Shame as she's a hell of a good footballer.

Congratulations, mate. Bond, anytime my wife gets uppity, and starts going on about the pain and suffering she went through in childbirth, I always like to remind her that I've probably had bigger sh1ts that hurt more, especially after a night out on the black stuff.

Doesn't calm her down much, to be fair, but deep down, I think she appreciates it puts childbirth into perspective :)
