come on boys its not that bad look at the group, it's a good point we done enough tonight when you take into account the 8 changes.
what i would like to know is why we need to rest players this early in the season especially for the hardest game of the group.
also how much longer are we going to carry on with this formation in europe , a lot of teams play with 5 in the middle but its more of a 4,5,1 with out the ball and 4,3,3 with it ,we seem to struggle to do that and just end up with rooney up front to often

fergie gambled in resting several players tonight and luckily it paid off! was not impressed with our performance tonight, but if you watch the game again u will see that benfica defended tactically well off the ball.park and giggs tried tucking in to find space but got no joy.carrick and fletcher were never going to take the ball forward and thats why giggs roamed in between the benfica defence and midfield.only problem was that benfica gave us little space to feed rooney. rooney can no longer play the role of striker up front, as since his injury in 2009/10 season he has lost some pace.this is why hernandez plays just in front of him in our strongest XI.

The game tonight was the worst I have seen in awhile.
Lindengaard - Very solid game and did well
Fabio - Decent game. Did nothing wrong.
Smalling - Solid as usuall and handled Carzola easily
Evans - Awfull, You can see why Carzola targeted him.
Evra - Good going forward but didn't do much. Still liability at the back.
Valencia - Quiet game. Not match fit yet
Carrick - Awfull, diabolical
Fletcher - Bad, did very little, looked for amazing pass and it never happened
Giggs - Apart from the goal did nothing.
Park - Very quiet.
Rooney - No service and had a quiet game. Some very good passes

Was clear to see the midfield was awful, however put you self in Fergies shoes, what midfielder is out there apart from Schweinsteiger and Sneijder that can compete with the Barcelona midfield. I can't think of any? Any suggestions?

Really poor in midfield tonight.

Benfica are not a top side.

Only worthwhile attempt in first half was Giggs.

Poor distribution from defenders all night.

Evans is just not good enough.

Rooney ineffective as lone striker...we are missing a dominant creative force in CM.

Lindegarrd will be our 1st choice keeper by end of October.

I'm happy with the result. This was definetly going to be the hardest game of the group, so to get the draw was not bad at all. Playing away from home in the Champions League isn't about putting on a show, it's about getting the result and I think if you offered SAF 1-1 before the game, he'd have taken it. Lindegaard, Fabio, Fletcher, Giggs, Carrick, Park and Valencia got some much needed game time and I think we can forgive them for the slow start to the match. The return of Vidic is going to solve a lot of problems in defence. Watching Evans and Evra play together gives me a headache. Playing Rooney as the lone striker doesn't work unless the ball's being moved around fast enough. He had to come deeper and deeper to envolve himself because Fletcher and Giggs refused to up the tempo and Carrick continued to play the 'safe' ball. Not nearly enough urgency, but it did improve in the second half.

It was evident, after watching this game, how important Anderson is to the quick football we've seen over the last few weeks. He's not afraid to pass the ball and continue to move forward. I can understand SAF's thinking in resting him for the Chelsea game.

Alright so we got a great point, rested players for Chelsea and gave others some much needed game time and I would probably agree that it was a great call from Fergie in the end but jeez it was dull. I don't know what I expected from a Champions League group game though.. Not that I'll be complaining if we beat Chelsea on sunday.

1.1 is a decent result away to a tricky Benfica with a makeshift second string, but I have to say it wasn't hard to spot the weaknesses in the team and the players who are holding us back. I think Carrick has been a good servant to the club, but is he afraid to pass the ball forward? Every single pass of his goes backwards, even if the easier option is to pass it forward. Giggs scored tonight, but was pretty horrific and kept losing possession. You can forgive Valencia, Fabio & Fletcher for being a bit rusty due to injuries, but Evans & Carrick should have been better and must say that they are the two weakest links in the United squad at the moment. Lindegaard was great, Rooney & Park were starved of service, Smalling decent again, as was Jones when he came on.

Cannot wait for Vidic & Cleverley to return. Cleverley & Anderson is our best midfield partnership, mainly because they are not scared to pass and move forward. People may call Carrick safe, but I disagree, by being so negative I think he puts our team in danger as the ball goes back to Lindegaard and when kicked up field we will lose possession. This is certainly Carrick's final year at the club, he's too inconsistent for me. We have some great youth and now is the time to blood them ready for next season. Berbatov not involved again, you have to say that if he doesn't face Leeds next week, then he is getting punished by the manager. Dragging him to games just to leave him on the bench.

United did all they had to tonight. They lacked the fizz of previous games and sometimes that's why you need the creative midfield player to open up the game. Rooney all to often becomes frustrated and plays in this position, which leaves us with no target man upfront. Considering who we were resting, overall it was a fair performance.

nice to see sir alex being his usual gracious- self when telling off kennys daughter kelly for asking a simple question ,naturally one would ask the question as its not like de gea is a great keeper, and your keeper tonight looks a better keeper, it one thing picking a argument with a man or other manager, but picking on his daughter is totally unacceptable and alex better watch as kenny is a few years younger than him and will be hitting him a slap...........lfc

A point is decent away to our main rivals in the group

Lindegard had a good game and shows we have a useful second keeper now.
Fletcher, Giggs and Carrick in midfield. Well it will not win us the Champions League will it. Nani was spectacularly awful when he came on and it is another game when Berbatov didnt appear yet picks up his £95K this week.
Really all we learnt was Lindegard is a decent keeper, we knew everything else from last season.

It was a team to do a job and they did it. But it wasnt exciting, new or agile will not worry Barca or Madrid and still no sign of Pogba on the bench.

So an experienced CL team gets point at difficult away game, it was a typical SAF away in Europe performance, dont take too many chances. Its a point , move on.

So can any one tell me what "The White Pele" did tonight for in the game i watched he gave the ball away time after time and just dropped deeper and deeper. Of course the media daren't say a word against him but loads of idiots will come on here and criticise Carrick who tidied up all night and made the most passes in the game.

What disappointed me was the sight of us falling back into last years tactics and the long ball being pumped up again and again.

Hands up who believes that midfield can cope with quality opposition. RAINFISHTROMBONE

I find it so frustrating when we play rooney as a lone striker. His game is all about dropping off people and I think he's wasted hanging off the last man. Also I think that a lot of our pace and movement is lost in midfield as we seem to have to wait for support for rooney. That's why I love chico with him.
And evra is having another shocker.

Im sat here watching the game having a beer and thinking same old Fergie.

He's resting players and gambling again as he always does in CL group stages. Why doesn't he concentrate on qualifying from group stages before rotating squad.

From tonight its clear to see that Carrick and Evans aren't good enough and Evra needs to watch himself. Fabio maybe given a chance to claim left back spot for himself.

Giggs too old to play full 90 mins.

Anyone see Keano and Southgate noticing Evra zero effort to run back 5 yard and help out Evans?

I wanted to mention it at the time but couldn't be bothered stirring it up mid game.

Nice to see Keano not hold back at half time totally agree with what he said about Giggs,Carrick and Valencia.

Really think Young Nani, Hernandez and Anderson should have started.

Just wanting to create a bit of discussion before tonight's game in regards to Wellbeck and Cleverley.

Personally, I believe they still have a long way to go to become regular first team players and are questionable whether they will be good enough.

What do you guys think?

I love it how Mancini is calling this a special day and all the s**tty fans are getting excited about there debut in the CL whereas we are just calling it another CL group stage match and discussing what the best team will be when considering other matches. Proof they'll always be in our shadow.

First time post, been reading here for a good while now. One of the recurring things other than Sneijder (yawn) is Ravel Morrison. I'm interested to know just how good he is. I first heard of him on here, then researched a bit (youtube, etc), he looks good in his youtube videos but I know that doesn't paint the whole picture. And then I see the Guardian labelling him as possibly the best player of his generation. From someone who watches him regularly, could somebody please tell me if he is that good and if so, what does he offer, that makes him superior to someone such as Wilshere or Cleverly. Thanks.

Percy.

Well come on united, had arsenal to mess up like they did, barca to draw, swindon and luton to win and waiting for us and inter for the bookies to take a hammering ! Hoping fergie starts the same team as sat with fletcher in for cleverly.
How good did gotze look last night though. The boy looks a real talent. Only really saw bits of him on youtube......
Speaking of youtube has anyone seen the angel of death on it? The guy who gets a boot to the head? Freaky.

morning guys, what does everybody think the starting line up will be tonight?

i have no clue but gonna take a shot:
--------------------de gea--------------------
------------jones-----------evans-----------
smalling------------------------------fabio--
------------fletcher------anderson---------
valencia----------rooney-----------young-
-----------------hernandez------------------

more than likely will be evra at lb, but would like to see fabio get some game time, and sneaking suspicion berba may be involved. hopefully not though.

wil the make a move for vidic or not?

will vidic move there from the epl to russian league?

they have shown the will pay above the odds for a player and i cant help but wonder if united should cash in on this and se if we can push for 40 maybe 50 mil... cuz they will pay that for one of the best CB in epl.
