Hey guys not trying to reignite the Nani debate but has anyone else noticed we haven't really been a threat from corners for some time? I remember Vidic and Ferdinand scoring quite a few goals from corners I can't say for sure who was taking them back then. I believe it was Giggs from both sides before but now we have Nani, Anderson, RVP, Rooney, and anyone close taking them. Wouldn't our set pieces improve if this was one players responsibility rather than whoever feels like it? Would like to hear others thoughts I am leaning towards Valencia as a permanent corner taker as his delivery is usually good.

Darren-Bermuda

Believable3 Unbelievable1

I noticed that valencia usually takes quite low corners whenever he does take one

Agree0 Disagree0

It amazes me that Nani can't seem to get his corners over the 1st defender. Come on, even we could manage that...

AJH

Agree5 Disagree0

Our last goal was from a corner just saying

Agree7 Disagree2

Rvp is a great set piece taker but at the same time he can't head in his own crosses, if only.

sulei

Agree1 Disagree0

It may just be me but It seems that there are less goals from corners nowadays from everyone as dead ball specialists are few and far between.... Nani is useless at corners even with the goal against Southampton which RVP did all the work for by the way..... Nani has not improved his crossing, corners, free kicks, decision making, to be honest I do not think he has improved enough and think he should of been sold last summer.

Agree1 Disagree0

Sulei - I agree and think he is wasted taking the corners and it infuriates me when he does as our team is already small and we are very weak in the air.

Agree1 Disagree0

There was a stretch a year or two ago where the team didn't score from a corner for almost an entire season...-KG

Agree0 Disagree0

Two of the goals against Southampton came from corners & one of the goals against Fulham was also from a corner.

Why do people say rubishty, it doesn't even look or sound right..

surely people could come up with a better insult. {Ed007's Note - It is the filter on the sites. It is automatically changed to save us Eds some work, granted sometimes it looks a bit $h!tty. I will ask the geeks if anything can be done about it.}

Believable4 Unbelievable0

Yes at least change thefilter to call them shatty or something

Pardoe {Ed002's Note - Perhaps "City" would work.}

Agree3 Disagree0

To be honest I can never bring myself to call them $h!tty just the same as I refuse to call Liverpool, loserpool. Its all a bit playground. If we are to be juvenile, which I am more than not, then lets have a bit more wit about us. Its what separates us from the rest ;)

Mike

Agree0 Disagree1

I hate the rubbishty thing it's petty and childish.

GDS

Agree1 Disagree1

I completely agree with Ed002..... Chelski, Rubbishty, Shatty, Sh!11y, Loserpool whatever you want they are all stupid and childish...... Teams have a name and nickname for a reason... Its about time the minority used them !

Agree2 Disagree0

I would prefer City. 'rubbishty', 'sh*tty' etc just seems stupid.

EVERYONE THAT WAS FIT IS FIT...

GREAT NEWS....

so what starting 11's do we see ??

________ De Gea

Raf _ Vidic _ Evans _ Buttner

__ Anderson _ Cleverley

_ Velencia _ Kagawa _ Nani

________ Van Persie

want to see this 11 given a start......

Oxred

Believable12 Unbelievable1

Id rather see carrick and scholes in the middle.

JK92

Agree5 Disagree6

Looks a strong team to me. hopefully we will dominate the game early and grab some goals with that attacking outfit then take any pressure off the back 4 especially if buttner started. would like to see anderson start and have a good game so fergie gives him a run so we can finally see if this year is his year or we can be certain we want rid

Agree0 Disagree1

We need to make a statement tomorrow!

CLEAN SHEET is imperative I reckon, especially if DDG plays - we need to instill confidence in the boy, he's our future.

Wigan aren't a bad side, but I'm hoping for 3-0 or similar!

RED_SKY

Agree3 Disagree0

I would really love that team against Wigan that was the team I wanted at the start of the season apart from Rooney behind RVP and Kags on the left... Anderson imo would excel when given a more fluid role

and now light reading from 'My Decade' by Wayne Rooney;

"When it happens, the manager stands in the middle of the room and loses it at me. He gets right up in my face and shouts.

It feels like I've put my head in front of a (Rooney googles hairdryers, this is the 1st one that comes up) BaByliss Turbo Power 2200. It's horrible.

I don't like getting shouted at by anyone. It's hard for me to take, so sometimes I shout back.

I tell him he's wrong and I'm right."

How obvious is that, like anyone would know that exact model of hair dryer off the top of their head, let alone someone who has shall we say minimal hair?

Cban

Believable4 Unbelievable1

He could be a keen collector of hairdryers......

Robbo {Ed007's Note - Maybe now that he has hair he is experimenting with hair care products.}

Agree2 Disagree0

Doesn't Rooney have some sort of condition where he has to have electrical items switched on to help him sleep?

That'll explain the hairdryer then!

I have been reading that QPR and rubbishty r upgrading the club infra-structure. I was wondering is carrington very modern and state of the art or do we need a new training ground. I'm just curious so no snappy remarks

Cheers

Believable2 Unbelievable0

They are currently building a new medical centre that is close to completion. There isn't many better football training complexes out there to rival Carrington.

Rubbishty are moving out because the link with Trafford is everything they claim to detest about United but they train next door. Another one of their famous own goals.

Agree2 Disagree1

Carrington is undergoing a massive revamp and upgrade at the moment
johndenton

Agree1 Disagree1

These things seem to improve year on year. A few years ago Carrington was state of the art but without money being invested every summer it was never going to remain that way. It is still, however, one of the better facilities in the country and they are in the process of building a state of the art medical centre on site which, among other things, will mean all our medicsls can be done without the media's glare.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

Carrington is up there with the best, if not the best, in Europe.

Still not close to the NFL Training facilities, they are just crazy!

MPez

Agree2 Disagree2

MPez, you are exactl right. I am from Tampa and as an avid Buccaneers fan, the new training facility for the team is nothing short of breathtaking.

ussoldier77

Agree0 Disagree0

When built 10-12 years ago it was one of if not the best in Europe, other clubs have since invested as well so have caught up.

We are doing the medical facilities and i'm sure other stuff gets done as well.

Maybe we get tips from the NFL as we have co-owners?

Agree0 Disagree0

Ussoldier77, boy do I feel sorry for you! Having tge Glazers behind both your teams...unfortunate bud ;)

MPez

Agree1 Disagree0

London colney is prob the best in the country

Agree0 Disagree0

I hate to say it, but City's plans for a new £100 million training facility look really good. Carrington is a great facility though. But like TK said, with technology moving on so quickly nowadays, you've got to invest almost every year to maintain a world class complex.

so some people are getting on there high horse about cleverly.

well i haven't seen one post that says cleverly will be a bad player or that cleverly should not be given a chance or that clevs will not be a united player.

in fact the worse ive seen is that cleverly may not develop in to a worldclass player, well about 99% of players dont, how many of our current squad are worldclass.

syd and a few others think clevs may develop into worldclass and we should build our midfield around him, others myself included think while a good player he may not quite reach that level.

but thats football people have different opinions but it seems on this site thats not allowed if your not overly positive about every player starting out and hail them as WC your what not giving youth a chance/less of a supporter.

strange thing is during the summer when i posted that i didnt think fergy would buy a CM as he would give clevs a chance i didnt get that many people agreeing with me.

jred

Believable10 Unbelievable2

I personally think that Clevs is a tidy little player, but i dont think we should build our midfield around him. I would agree with you that he may never be a world class player, can turn out to be a good player.

As for the less of a supporter thingie, if you state your opinion as to what you think is realistic and at times if it isent positive reading, should never be taken in the "u are not patient/dont give youth a chance" light.

And i sometimes wonder, we are ready to give a player all the time he needs and chances galore to develop(which i completely agree with), but for someone like Rooney who has been the standout performer for 2 years... 2 bad performances and the knives are sharpened. We dont show a lot of patience with him do we? I know Clevs is young, but he is 23 already.

By the way i like Cleverly, but IMO wont be a Scholes replacement. Happy if we keep giving him chances but would expect everyone to have the same yardstick for every other player.

Deeps....

Agree3 Disagree0

Cleverly is never going to be anything special, Cesc at the same age was what you call class, countless apps for Arsenal, World Cup, Euro champion. I'd compare him more to that other over rated midfielder at Liverpool, Jay Spearing.
Stoner

Agree6 Disagree5

I saw a few "Cleverley is rubbish" posts after the England game i think (it may well have been scouse trolls though). Also "World Class" is a very vague term. Everyone defines it differently.

For me, we are never going to be satisfied with any midfielder we get or develop. The reason is we have seen the best passer of the ball and the most intelligent player in Scholes play for us for the best part of 20 years now. We won't be satisfied with any combative box to box player because we have seen the best of them all imo in Roy Keane.

A United fan's definition of "World Class" will largely be based on comparison with those two.

I don't see anybody saying Cleverley will be the world's best etc. But i see a lot of "he has to prove himself" posts which seem to be doubting him. The boy has broken into a Manchester United midfield from the academy and is first choice, i think he has proved enough for now. A little patience and support wouldn't cost anyone a dime would it?

REDFAITH

Agree7 Disagree1

Syd has said that he doubts Cleverly will ever be worldclass, but believes he will be a very good player for the club. He also said that he didn't mean build a team around Cleverly, but meant we would buy a player to play alongside Cleverley as opposed to buying a player that will replace him. You agreed with him about that to jred. syd is right, he isn't saying people shouldnt have an opinion on Cleverley, he is saying they should give him time before making the assumption that he will never be good enough. Personally I agree with syd and you that he will probably not reach worldclass status and will probably end up being a very good player, but the point is lets give him time to see how he turns out.

Andy

Agree2 Disagree2

We have quite a lot of world class players mate......

Vidic, Valencia, Kagawa, Van Persie and Rooney (when on form)

Robbo

Agree1 Disagree5

Jred, I was not talking about you or Dan. Both of you made some good points and I agreed with most. I too believe he will never meet the heights of Scholes, but then who will? I just think he should get time and a fair go before people are trying to force him out. You are one of the many on here that believes he deserves a chance. Whether he makes it or not is irrelevant, I just want him to have a chance without muppets putting him down and ruining his confidence before he has got going.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

The only player there close to being labelled world class might be van persie if he keeps scoring, the others are good but no where near being labelled world class

Thank God RVP is fit for our clash with Wigan, i hope to see goals galore. I was a little worried about he and Kagawa's fitness but now i'm much ok. Kagawa has realised he needs to work on his physical part of football to match the energy style of EPL, this is good cos will avoid him being thrown away like paper in the midfield like what Dembele and other tough guys did to him. I'm happy he's joined us to add creativity, precision, flair, guile and goals with his quick feet.

Usually the Daily Mail is worthless, but they have an article online now about Scholes reaching his 700 games, and a summary of his career including goals, big matches, etc. But my favorite part are the quotes, both from Scholes and from other big names in the sport. I'm just copying and posting a few here that I particularly liked...

Luis Figo: ˜I'm star struck when I see Paul Scholes because you never see him. On the pitch you can't catch him. Off the pitch he disappears.'
Roy Keane: ˜No celebrity bull****, no self-promotion ” an amazingly gifted player who remained an unaffected human being.'
Lionel Messi: ˜At La Masia (the Barcelona youth academy) his name was mentioned a lot. In some ways, he was one of our teachers.'
Pele: ˜If he had been playing with me, I would have scored many more goals.'
Xavi: ˜In the last 15 or 20 years the best central midfield player ” the most complete ” is Scholes. He is a spectacular player who has everything. If he had been Spanish, he would have been valued more.'
Sir Bobby Charlton: ˜I have no hesitation in putting a name to the embodiment of all that I think is best about football. It's Paul Scholes.'
Rio Ferdinand: ˜He will do ridiculous things in training like say, See that tree over there, 40 yards away? I am going to hit it. And he will do it. Everyone at the club considers him the best.'

And Scholes himself:
On retiring from international football: ˜I got fed up. You want to be part of a team and play well. But with England there are (too many) individuals who are after personal glory.'
On the media: ˜I don't like compliments. I would rather people have a go at me so I can prove them wrong.'
On life out of the spotlight: ˜My ideal day? Train in the morning, pick up the kids from school, go home, play with kids, have tea, get them up to bed, and then come down and watch a bit of TV.'
On the Champions League triumph of 2008: ˜I was first on the bus afterwards. But I always am. What's the point in hanging around? I was pleased with what we had done but didn't want to spend all night talking about it.'
On the future, four years ago: ˜I'd think I have two years left at the most and part of me will be glad to finish. The only thing I will definitely miss is the football. The general life of a footballer I suppose I will not miss at all.'
On his longevity: ˜Maybe football intelligence helps you to cope. After all, there's only so much running you can do. It's football and if you are clever enough to play then you'll find the right answers.'

On tackling: ˜Of course I can tackle. There's plenty of evidence of that. I was just getting people back. It was always in the back of my mind.'

Best player i have ever seen in a United shirt - Oozes class!

His passing has been and still is a pleasure to watch - there won't be another like him unless he is teaching his son the ways of the scholes :)

Giants14

Agree7 Disagree1

Sadly the son of scholes is horrendous at football, more of a rugby kid!

Fagan

Agree0 Disagree0

Ironic that he has been really appreciated generally globally outside of the top players/coaches etc only when he has reached his twilight years of 32-33 onwards. Surrounded by amazing players throughout his career: Cantona/Ruud/Giggs/Beckham/Keane/Ronaldo etc. Maybe it is actually his personality that didnt bring so many early plaudits deserved with some real star players and personalities around him. Utter disgrace Eriksson moved him to the left for England to accomodate Lampard. Gerrard/Scholes should have been the cornerstone of Englands midfield for the last 10 or so years, and possibly Gerrard would have been the player he should have been in an England shirt with Scholes next to him. Only Robson and Gascoigne deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as English midfielders from my lifetime

Good post, great player! My favourite quote has to be the one after the 2008 CL final - sums up Scholesy to a T

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

I like thinking about the difference between Scholes day and Balotelli's. Scholes trains, raises his children, and watches some tv. Balotelli doesn't train, then trashes a hotel room, drives a car into a pool, lights his bathroom on fire with fireworks at 2am then drinks until not-training the next day. -KG

Nicest looking or what meant the most?

my favourite looking is the 06/07, most will disagree.

my favourite top was the 07/08, we won the champions league.
i would of said the 99 top but i can' stand umbro.

1985 fa cup top and 97 top too {Ed007's Note - The Green/Gold top from 1992 wasn't just my favourite Utd top it is one of the most beautiful tops ever made. That was before you could buy any top you wanted from sports shops and I am the only person from where I stay up here that had it. At 18 yrs old that set my street cred through the roof lol. The downside was it also meant the police knew who's door to go to if that was in the description they were given :-)

1977 home and away strips, especially the away - white with the three black vertical stripes running down the left hand side. Can't quite (?!?) get into my original one anymore, so forked out for a copy recently.

The one that means the most tho, is the one I wore in the Nou Camp in 99 - it still gets brought out as the 'lucky' shirt from time to time, when I'm clutching at straws :)

Agree with Bond the Green/Gold one was class I also liked the blue and white one with all the players names in the material.

My favourite top ever though is the Mexico 1998 W.C top with the Aztec face in the design and Hernandez (with the hair band) on the back. Some absolute bell*nd nicked it when i was at a swimming meet!
