Just managed to watch the game, avoided the scores. Don't ask me how exactly, a tight box a timer lock and a nutrition drip. Managed to catch up on the posts. What's the panic? 3 points away, team we drew against last season, game went as i expected. it was a get the job done game. Young was great nani could of scored a couple, welbeck and cleverly showed glimpses we've seen them do better but Consistency comes with age. No problem in my mind. Still had the attitude of keep going and got the goal. Like i say after an energenic preseason and the highs of a charity sheild this was always going to be a get the job done game. Still think we could use a goal scoring mid and or a mid with steel but genuinely think the link up play with young welbeck rooney cleverly anderson and nani will be outstanding at times this season. As for de gea. Was a bad gaff. Certainly got a baptism of fire. Must have been a lot going through his head for sure. Like oh s**t these people are big Certainly looked his age. But still good gettin the ball out and showed good reflexes one being for me a fantastic save. Forget the times you went on holiday. Try being in a place where no one speaks english. Been there trying to get treatment for my girl. Mindtripping and well out of the comfort zone. Go easy. I personally think lingaard could of started the season till the spain man got his bearings. But now he's there. Good luck to him. I mean for f'sake athletco are no mugs. They trusted in him and he got them to a final Cons red

Greetings Amigo´s from sunny Spain I am out here on holiday and enjoying the sun for another 10 days. I am looking forward to all those people like Sydney who said if we didn´t sign a world class midfielder then they would come on here and accept that the Glazers are holding us back. Or are we now supposed to believe that Cleverly is the answer to all last seaons problems. He lost his way in the second half against WBA and Anderson did what he has always done, great for the first ten minutes of each half. All of you who are doubting de gea get a grip of yourself. Back in ten days then i will be expecting answers. Peace to you all RAINFISHTROMBONE {Ed007's Note - Hope you are having a nice time RFT}

Nasri will sign for City in less than a week.
Sydney!
Cesc___Xavi___Iniesta
Chez___Messi___Villa
It will look like this for this season, Neymar could replace Villa next season if Barcelona sell Villa to fund the deal. Absolutely no need for a Busquets or Mascherano.
Sydney!
You have got to laugh at the latest Sneijder twist, he is apparently depressed after the move to United collapsed. Well lower your wage demands then you nugget.
Sydney!
All Fletcher, Valencia, Pogba, Morrison & Keane will all play in tonight's reserve game against Arsenal. Valencia & Fletcher expected to play 45 minutes each.
Sydney!
I would rather bring in Gotze & Rodwell than Sneijder.
Sydney!
I know about Blackburn's plans to take Gibson on loan. I think they are not interested in spending big money, I think they have conned the Rovers fans. Gibson would be a class act for Blackburn.
Sydney!
'First no namer'
How naive are you? Sneijder is for sale, even he has clarified that. And Tevez is Inter's main transfer target this summer. I am not sure there is a swap deal happening, but Sneijder is for sale and Tevez is wanted by Inter.
Sydney!
'no name'
If we were making token bids for players because we cannot afford them, why would we pay £18m for De Gea when we could have bought Stekelenburg for £5.5m? We could have kept Kuszczak and made Lindegaard our number one and spent nothing. We wouldn't have bought a luxury signing in Young and we wouldn't have bought Jones when we could have kept O'Shea & Brown? None of these deals are sins of a skint club. The money is there to buy a top player, it's the wages that are a problem and I fully understand why our club makes a stance against greedy players.
'Red Man'
We have identified our targets and we have tried to sign them, it's not the clubs fault that they have chosen to join another club and it's not right that we bow down to greedy mercenaries. A fee was agreed in principle by United and Inter hence the reason we were allowed to talk to him, it's the player that won't budge. I am glad the club won't give him what he wants, let him rot in Serie A.
Sydney!

You are wrong, we bid £20m for Nasri weeks ago. Sneijder would have been our first target for the past 12 months, but Nasri would have been a better buy hence the reason we bid for him. The Sneijder deal is not a done deal, it's far from it. We may go back in for him towards the end of the window, but for now the deal is off.
GREED
Sydney!
I never said we made an official bid for Nasri, but we did make a verbal bid to Arsenal. And if it isn't greed that is the hold up then please enlighten us all? He wants to move, United want to buy and Inter want to sell, so please enlighten us on what the hold up is?
Sydney!
I still think Kagawa will be pursued if we fail to convince greedy to lower his wage demands.
Sydney!
Dear Sydney,
you post as if you are in a high and mighty position and knows everything. I think the fact is, you know jacks**t You post your own opinions as if they are/will happen somehow. I think you are just willing them to happen.
Firstly, and the latest rubbish was that reserves’ turnout. Well, Valencia and Morrison aren’t even in the SQUAD, let alone the first eleven
Then there is the ridiculous name-calling of Sneijder to be a nugget, greedy and mercenary. Were you at the negotiating table to know what the actual demands were? Do you actually know what was offered and what was demanded for you to call him such? So what if he doesn’t want to join United? So what if his demands are indeed high and he refuses to lower them? He is not one of those players who are United fans to do so in the first place. Where do you work Sydney? If a company, who is a competitor to yours, offers you a lesser salary to join them, even though they are slightly a notch above yours in the world stage, would you jump at the chance? Or would you carefully consider what is best for you and family? Football is short career, so what if these players want to maximise their earnings? It is not as if Inter are a totally piss-poor option. They are used/have been used to high-living, hence the need to maintain that, after their careers. Once again, would you have jumped at the chance, Sydney? Would you mind colleagues calling you names like nugget, greedy and mercenary, let alone people who don’t even know you?
If I remember correctly, just a few weeks ago you were shouting down United fans to be patient and that a BIG signing WILL come and that the transfer window has a long way to go. In fact, you were rooting for Sneijder to come. I bet IF/WHEN he does come, you will change your tune again, as if you have known this all along.
And what is this obsession with posters who don’t put up their names? It doesn’t bother the Eds as they put ‘em up. So why should it bother you?
You, Sydney, much like most of us on here, know nuts What you posted are just your opinions. So stop acting high and mighty towards those who have differing opinions to yours. You are letting some of those who asked your opinions on here get to your head into thinking that you indeed know a lot.
For those who have had a go at De Gea, perhaps it is time to stop and ponder. Here is a 20-yrs old keeper, playing in a new country, almost without knowledge of the new language, alongside arguably 2 of the biggest defenders of world football, at the biggest club in the world where there is tremendous pressure to succeed. Many, if not most, will be nervous and jittery for the first few initiation games. It is not as if he has played hundreds of top games for numerous top sides. He has only played for one club, for under a hundred games.
Lastly, I AM a United fan. Back from 1979, where trophies were scarce, if any at all. So I am NOT a glory-hunter or a new-age fan.

The De Gea debate, we must all 100% support him and he needs to stay in the team

My impression is that the scousers and city fans have spotted a couple of minor mistakes and are taking their chance to try and create the impression of a "dodgy keeper" , to try and unsettle De Gea. Hansen, Micky Quinn they will all propogate the idea that De Gea is no good and hope the impression grows and that it gets to De Gea, maybe the opposition will shoot from distance having been informed by TV that he cant deal with shots from distance.

Bring it on, but if we as United fans let that happen then we are playing into the scousers hands. We give many others who are not as good as De Gea season after season not 1 game.

Time to 100% support our new goalkeeper and stand up to those who would undermine our keeper who I believe has a fantastic future.

All these so called fans who say were not good enough need to get a grip. Someone posted something about Barca wudnt struggle against the might of west brom, yh they probly wudnt but I remember Barca getting beat at home last season off hercules? Anyone wud fink we lost. As Sydney said on another day we cud have been 4 or 5 up. You get these type of games every year, just cos were playing lower sides doesn't mean were gonna win 7-0 every game. Loads of posters have been writing how we struggled against an average side, yet they forget we destroyed a team who are 1 of the favorites for the title a week earlier? People are so fickle just cos we dont batter teams. End of the day we got the 3 points we wer looking for so stop crying about how were not good enough

This wonderful
180 minutes in on a 20yr old career at OT and there is this massive debate as to whether he is a mistake/liability/mistake etc....
Laughable. Admittedly he isnt who I wanted to see, but i never doubted he credentials and i stll don't dobt them....
On a more loyal note, great to see Cleverley have another good game.... I think he will get a good few games early on this season as will Mr Welbeck.
Shame about Rio and Rafael, but gives others a chance to get some game time....

De Gea just has to learn the premiership game I always said Reina was poor at the start just flapping at the ball coming from La Liga aswell now he is def one of the top 3 keepers in epl... Look at the size of the twins now compared to when they started if De Gea can build out like them the opposition won't be pushing him over so easily... Whatever about the opposition beating Rio and Vidic De Gea has lighting quick reflexes when he is one on one it's just going to take time to adapt simple stuff like coming for the ball but I believe that's just down to lack of communication... By XMas I expect we will see a different De Gea and all this uncertainty will be way behind us...

Hi Guys I'm a Chelsea fan. First of all well done last season, hopefully we'll beat you this season Secondly and my main point - I don't know about you but i find it hard to believe that any of us have any chance at all of winning the Champs League. I know you are closer than us at the moment but still, after the final last season when Barca beat you 3-1, the natural evolution to keep the balance in the footballing world would have been for Barca to keep the same squad and for you to buy a couple of world class players. Now yes you have strengthened and you have made some shrewd signings for the future. But then we look at Barca, and they go and spoil it all by signing Fabregas and Sanchez for basically the same price of Jones, Young and De Gea combined, plus on top of that Thiago now picks his moment to become a world beater. I hope somehow and i don't know how, but hopefully one of us will win the Big Eared Trophy this year, all we need is for Barca to get knocked out and then it shuld be one of ours Oh sh** wait forgot about Real Madrid.......*hand over eyes*.............

IMO rafeal a weak link in the team as well as de gea so I think a right back to fill the gap should be Kevin foley from wolves I've seen a lot of him while at wolves and have to say he reminds me of a faster gary Neville. Calm comfortable in possession and is good going forward with an excellent cross worth £5m at least..

To the idiots having a go at De Gea. (half of them scousers in disguise no doubt)

Does anybody not remember what a torrid time Schmeichel was given when he came here (if you were even born then i.e. because the rubbishing of De Gea seems unbelievably childish and immature)? Doesn't anybody remember how much lost Evra and Vidic looked in their first 6 months? Wasn't Ronaldo too lightweight and brutalized when he came to the league?

Doesn't Reina make blunders every season? Does Cech ever do an act of bravery now after his injury? Casillas has been prone mistakes too. Was Edwin VDS as good as he was at 20?

Yes, he needs to bulk up, do hours in the gym. He does need time to get used to the EPL. All that can be built over time, what can't be is talent, an eye for distribution, instinctive world class saves, and he certainly has that. He is playing with new defenders, and the back 4 isn't constant as well with the injuries. He needs TIME. Judge him after a full season or 2 have finished.

I fully expect more dodgy moments, but i also expect him to get better and be world class because he has potential to be that.

This is a simple question to those hitting out at De Gea.

Why is he a waste of money?

Why did we make a mistake in signing him?

Why is he not good enough?

He's made a couple of mistakes, granted, but that is no reason to get rid.

Paul Scholes cost us the FA cup in 2005 when he missed a penalty, when you consider his track record of scoring he should of scored, he missed, should we have sold him? after all he made a mistake plus he'd have no reason to feel scared of being in a new place.

Vidic made a mistake against Liverpool when they beat us 4-1. he got sent off for two stupid tackles, he made a mistake should we have sold him? again, he has no excuse or no reason to be scared...

They are just two examples of MISTAKES in which we lost a game, both Vidic and Scholes are professionals with tons of experience, but yet they still made mistakes. De Gea is a 20 year old Lad who made a mistake, (which wasn't exactly a howler, he got beat by the pace of our game not by his own faults). We won yesterday, so just leave him alone.

You may argue that those mistakes are different, but are they? really. They cost us games, De Gea could of cost us a game but didn't. Are they different because one is a Goalkeeper and the others are outfield players so there isn't as much room for a mistake? I disagree. A penalty being missed or a Defender being sent off are just as crucial in my books.

If a Keeper makes a mistake then that's it. A goal has been conceded.

if a player misses a penalty he misses the opportunity to take the lead or get level (exactly the same as a keeper, The keeper missed the chance for your side to keep level or keep in the lead)

If a player, especially a CB gets sent off it opens the door for a lot more chances and opportunities for the opposing team.

To me, De Gea did make a mistake, down to not knowing our league and lack of experience, but Vidic and Scholes are two examples of players that have made mistakes even though they have tons of experience and know our league inside out, in which we lost games, so the mistake is therefore a lot more damaging.

When Reina first came to the EPL he wasn't very good, now he's considered one of the best.

When Van Der Sar first joined Fulham he wasn't the best, now he's considered one of the best we've ever had.

When Gomes joined Spurs he was awful, yet now he's proving he's a good keeper.

Even our own Great Dane was pretty poor in the beginning, now look at him, arguably the greatest goalkeeper ever.

The Moon.

As I dont know where you are from I know not what time 2-55 here would be to you.

Rooney as a Striker was what he was brought in for. He has an all round good game so we could and tried to use him in different positions ie out left and so on. Its funny how the year he was through the middle for us he banged in 30+ goals and had he not got injured we could have been looking at 3 finals in 3 years. So even if as you say WS CANT manage to play anywhere other than CAM and we are playing people where they are best (in your eyes) it would surely be WS as CAM and Rooney at ST? Irrelivent of Chicho. If Rooney bags 30+ goals as a striker and WS is only world class in CAM then thats how we would have to play.

Where as I see it that CM is the issue and as SAF has said its Barca we should be trying to emulate then WS is the guy to learn from for building up plays and range of passing. He is miles ahead of any of our CM's and would bring a different type of play similar to Scholes that none of our CM's have. Fletch and WS would be a perfectly complimented CM 2. Fletch hustling and tackling, WS recieving the ball and releasing the ball forward for a front 4 to move on to. That imo is alot better than Rooney dropping to do that role and having Chicho alone up top isolated like v Barca.

Yes he played in a 2 man CM at RM but they were nowhere near overrun. They won the league in his first year and he was thrust out left when injuries occured. So they seen his quality and rather than playing an actual left winger they wanted him in the team and used him there, sound familiar? Plus he mostly played in a CM 2 including Guti who has no steel so they relied on keeping the ball and accurate passing forward. Inter have been sticking with the 2 harder men in CM since JM left and very rarely used Sneijder there. If Motta or Stankovic are unavailable they drafted Zanetti in to cover as they have no others to play in CAM. We do. But of course he cant play in a CM 2. Altho he played there and won things at Ajax, RM buy him to play there and win the league, Inter buy him and move him up to CAM and they win the treble so as thats where he was most successful he is only world class there? nonsense. We won more when Rooney was out left of a top 3 does that mean he is better there? NO.

As I said none of this can be proved either way if he doesn't sign so you saying there are no counter arguements from me is abit off the mark as i'm putting my opinions on him over as a person who will do a job for us in CM, you are agruing that he wont and can only play in CAM. Who can win? Answer= nobody if he doesn't sign and if he does then im sure you will WANT me to be right.

The difference between Veron, Berba and WS is that WS doesn't slow things up. Both Berba and Veron both want and need time on the ball and touches where as WS is quicker in that aspect and is direct in his approach.

The point about WS teaching the kids about money grabbing then saying Rooney is someone our kids can learn from? You must have missed last August mate. I'm sure the Rooney saga holding our club to ransom with his childish threats to quit us unless he gets his way are a brilliant advert for all kids. Remember WS or anyone involved have never disclosed his or Inters demands so it is all speculation that you are so quick to judge a player on yet 1 year later all is forgiven with Rooney? Abit hipocritical.

What a waste of money de gea is £18m million it looks like it is our turn to have a useless keeper took the acclaim off arsenal. £18m he is too young think alex is losing his eye for quality he need to be a bench warmer and we should go for a more experienced keeper. We wont win jack with a liability in goal. Just hope vidic and rip will be ok as that makes the situation worse pull your finger out derby and buy a decent keeper. And don't get me started on ashley young arrogant big headed ego the size of old trafford he thinks he is the best player but he just isn't he needs to grow up bit like nani pair of big headed tools nani needs to go and be replaced.

Cleverley had 2 great games keeps play moving quickley, always wants the ball&very rareley givs it away, unlike carrick
in 2 matches the quick football utd played at times already looks better than last year,
rio, vidic injuries would been nightmare now not so with smalling&jones both class&play together at U21s
as for sneijder yes be great 2c him at utd but if all just about wages&what hes gona get then leave him there or he can go 2 them clowns city
mutv showed rios behind the scenes utds tour to usa, the players all together havin banter, laughin get along great,u woudnt c that at city&that will be the diff not the £200,000 wk wages, they count the cash while we again wil count our trophies

The amount of negativity being posted in the last couple of days is simply unbelievable. People seem to think we have a god given right to win everything every year. Our club has been really fortunate over the last 20 years to have consistently won trophies and challenged on every front pretty much every year. How many other clubs have done this in the last 20 years? Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool? All big clubs but have only challenged us for set periods and haven't been winning trophies consistently have they? Think of teams like Forest, Leeds, West Ham etc who have a rich history and are huge clubs but haven't had much to shout about recently have they? Look at us 3 CL finals in 4 seasons and 3 league titles in that time but people still want more.

Disgusted to think of some of our so called "fans" who are writing the team off after 1 league game, which we won. We played fantastic in pre-season and in the Community Shield so everyone should be optimistic about this season but then we have 1 average performance, still win and suddenly we are hopeless. Shame on all you glory hunters who only seemingly only support the club when we win well and seem to want the club to go and do a City or a Real Madrid and spend ridiculous sums of money every single year. If you are one of those fans go and support someone else.

I feel the defence will have to be as follows untill everyone recovers from injury: rb. Fabio cb. Smalling and jones lb. Evans

The only real worry there for me is evans. Although is a glimpse of the future(fabio to lb and rafael at rb though).

Also I feel a defensive midfielder is required attacking midfield is strong enough. Even if we wanted to really open up a team who are playing very defensive could go 4132 with a new defensive mid behind lw young cam nani rw valencia and against tougher teams we'd still have carrick fletcher anderson giggs park cleverly who can slot in for nani to make it a more solid 442.

Why am I not surprised by the knee jerk reaction to De Gea by some people on here. After all, so many have confirmed the sigings of top stars including Sneidjer, Diarra, Barton (Not a top star I know), Goetze, Ganso etc etc with the information being based on close associates of the players concerned or within the Club, even Fergie's family has been mentioned.
Presumably these fans have forgotten how VDS gifted WBA a point at OT last year and how the great Dane, PS struggled when he first joined us. Not the best start by De Gea, but he is a kid of 20 and will only improve, so get behind him rather than writing him off after 2 games, that's what supporters do, the clue is in the word supporters. Failing that report your latest signing ................. just heard Utd to sign Messi / Xavi and Fabregas, it is 100% genuine, Fergie has just rang me to let me know ......

I really like the look of our squad this year, and i think we'll win the league with our current crop, even with De Gea and his mistakes. I'm looking forward to watching him develop, he's got incredible reflexes and a great delivery, even Buffon and Casillas made howlers at 20, so i'm all up for sticking with him.

However, even though our team is exciting and suits the fast pace of the Premier League, unfortunately our current midfield cannot deal with Barcelona and Real Madrid. It's going to take all year for Fletcher to be back fully fit, during his illness he's lost 2 stone in weight and it will take him time to get back to his best. Carrick isn't mobile enough and Cleverley (I believe) won't ever be good enough to be a United first teamer, he's a great squad player to have, like an improvement on Gibson. But will he ever hack it against Barcelona? I really don't think so. We've reached the final twice recently and we've been brought back down to earth twice. There is a very simple explanation for this, and that is our midfield. You'd have to be deaf and blind not to notice that. It's so agonizing having to watch Barcelona give us the run around, and on both occasions have so much false hope in our squad. Our squad is perfectly adapted to the English game, and the English league, and i love watching us play well with this squad. But we may aswell not even be in the Champions League with our central midfield. Unless by some incredible chance Barcelona and Real Madrid get knocked out by another team than we can't win it.

In my opinion we are getting Sneijder, the only player in our youth set up that might come close to being as good at reading the game, and passing through teams is Pogba, but we can't expect anything truly special from him for another 2-3 years at least. Sneijder is the finished article, who has all the same attributes to his game as Van der Vaart but with twice as much quality, and look how he settled into the English game and influenced Tottenham's travels through Europe.

The fact is, Sneijder will improve us massively and not getting him will only mean we are risking losing out on silverware. Although we are capable of winning anything domestically with our team, we could boost our chances of winning things. It just seems like common sense? And financially, SURELY we'd recuperate the entire transfer fee on shirt sales alone by such a big name capture. Everyone at United needs to understand that there is no way a player of Sneijder's quality can simply flop or not bring in match winning performances.

A player of his quality doesn't always want to come to us, and he will only end up elsewhere if we don't get him. It's a chance to take us up to another level and we shouldn't sit back and allow it to just fall through our fingers. We'll get 6 glorious years with him being our linchpin in midfield. We'll not get any years of that with Cleverley as our midfield maestro, he simply isn't of that standard, and i can tell he never will be. He's a squady and somebody we would never go out and buy if he hadn't have come up through our youth system.

Do the right thing SAF, do the right thing for our fans, get our man, we need him

(sorry for the long post, but i felt it necessary to explicitly underline my frustrations with our pussyfooting about with this issue)

last month i questioned if de gea at his age had the mental strenth to be our number one and got shot down.
like i posted at the time i think he is going to be a world class keeper but is he ready to be a man united no 1.week in an week out
please people stop saying he needs time
if he needs time his not ready, did schmicale and VDS needed time
@syd
i also said i did not think we would buy a cam and you said i was either blind or stupid, u also agreed that if we never signed a cam there was something wrong at the club, seeing as tho fergy had identified that is were we need a player.(do u still stand by that)
i'm not going of this game, this game was more evidence of last season.
this site is split in to two side's ,one that reads the papers and glory hunters and are happy if we win cups and that is all that counts.
and them that go and watch the club
week in and week out and can see that there is something wrong and we need a better CAM than we have got now.
so before i get called a plastic supporter like i have been in past when i have dared to question how good we are and if there is room for improvement , please tell me as football fans did you watch the real barce game and is there room for improvement.
are man united happy to be second or third

I'm not going to write some essay about how we performed today, I'm simply saying that those who expected a 20 year old keeper to be the finished article need help.

he's a kid with a bright future, and who is good enough too play now. he makes mistakes, but he's in an alien world at the moment, new lingo, new country, new team, new league, etc, he needs a little confidence.

if you want him to improve get behind him, if you don't then keep criticizing him.

p.s - right now you can argue that we should have signed Neuer but in 10 years time we'll see who is the best in the world. oh and don't forget that we haven't lost any of the games he's made mistakes in. so shut up and get over it.

if he makes a mistake every game, for the next year then criticize him, but for now, be quiet.

So after two games De Gea is a flop? Seriously some people are so quick to judge players. Can't wait for him to prove everyone slating him wrong. It's good these mistakes/opposition players ruffing him up are happening now, he will mature because of it.

We play Arsenal in a couple of games time and they will be without Cesc, Nasri, Gervinho & inevitably Song. Wilshere is currently injured and RVP is made of glass. They also play two CL games and a PL game before we meet them, anything could happen to Wilshere, Walcott, Ramsey, Vermaelen or RVP in that time. We could end up playing Arsenal at a very good time. We play Spurs next week and they have an unsettled Modric and many injuries. They desperately need a striker so we could be playing them at a very good time too.

We will be without Rio & Rafael, but we will have Evra, Fletcher, Valencia, Carrick & Hernandez back from injury. They are not guaranteed wins but they are certainly games that look to be in our favour.

The biggest problem at the moment is that to bed in a young goalkeeper you want an experienced defence in front of him. With Ferdinand injured and out for 10 weeks, and Vidic injured not to mention Rafael, we are now forced to put inexperience infront of a new and young goalkeeper. Smalling and Jones especially don't have that experience. Nothing can be done about it practically but we may yet live to regret the sale of O'shea and Brown. 3 points today is a good start given the other teams dropping points, but we are going to be tested hard in the first 10 weeks now
