Talk of United looking likely to appoint Paul Mitchell as DOF from Leipzig, any of the Ed's know if this could be a good appointment for the club? The right choice?

What happened with the supposed approach for Berta at Atletico?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Andrea Berta was the Director of Football chosen as the desired choice of Mr Mourinho in 2016 and the club were looking for a Director of Football and Berta was one of the two that Mr Mourinho was comfortable with = but he has since then been promoted from his position as Technical Director to the co-ordination role of Director of Football which might well suit Woodward but would not address the true problem the club has. If appointed to a similar role at MU it would be another major mistake.}

Mitchell sounds like a yes man and not what we need.

{Ed002's Note - That there is no effective structure without a Director of Football in the medium to long-term.}

16 Dec 2018 10:57:49
It would be speculation however it sounds like the decision maker is the continuing problem. If Woodward is the decision maker he would be the interviewing appointing person so you have to think we would be unlikely to see the appointment of someone who will disagree with him or the direction he sees for the club. If Woodward has been setting the direction for the club and the last 5 years are anything to go by plus he appoints a nodding donkey DOF, I could see it getting worse. I would be concerned at appointing a DOF reporting to Woodward also creates another management layer that could be blamed for failure, so there would be two potential sackings rather than one before the issue of blame arrives at Woodwards door. It may be my opinion, which I gave on here months ago, but the owners should obtain independent advice and appoint a DOF themselves to report to the board and not to Woodward. Either get rid of Woodward or put him back to Financial matters and obtaining more noodelly noodle partners.

The fact Ed’s reply is based on 2016 says it all really and shows just how long this process has been drawn out. I wouldn’t want a snap desicion of course not but approx 3 years seems to long to me. Why can’t we just make a short list of qualified candidates and just employ one.

Having read the posts following FZZ comments, and the talk of switching club, I thought I would tell you a true story.
My father wasn't a football fan, so I can't really say how, from 5 years old I loved United. It wasn't until I was 7 or 8 that I started going to games with a friend and his dad, but I was hooked.
The only member of my family that was a football fan was my uncle on my mums side. He was, and still is a massive City fan, so much so he was in the daily Mirror in the 70's because he missed his own wedding reception to go to a game.
He was always trying to convince me to switch allegiance, but got nowhere. So one Christmas he bought me a Man City bag and scarf.
I wasn't happy and it got shoved away in a cupboard, {my mum wouldn't let me bin it. }, and there it stayed.
Then one day in 1977 my regular school bag broke, and my mum, not understanding the cruelty of it, made me use the City bag.
Obviously unhappy, i stomped off to school. I got to the crossing half way there, and proceeded to cross on the green man. Anyway getting to my point, i got run over by a car going through a red light.
Fortunately i wasn't seriously hurt, but it was the only time i ever used that bag.
Maybe a coincidence or maybe fate, but something to think about if you ever consider crossing to the dark side.

On second thoughts I think I'll keep it to myself and spare their nightmares but thanks for sharing.

BTW What do you do if your kids support City? Just asking for a friend! 😉

I’m trying to reduce how often I post, but FZZ made a comment down the page that I can’t ignore.

“Other stuff on which can take priority. Call it what you want, sports are there to enjoy, i'm not sucked in with all this plastic bs, everyone on here is plastic barring 1 or 2. You all be supporting man utd if they never won a thing and in league 2 give me a break. ”

Not sure how old you are FZZ but some of us were supporting the club in Division 2 and then for the many years where we only every won the odd Cup. Your club is your club, through good times and bad. Are you seriously suggesting that if United continue to struggle you will find another club to support? Perhaps one who are winning things, City perhaps?

I have missed the odd match this year, the football hasn’t been great and I’ve found myself busy with a lot of other priorities so I get that point. But to suggest pretty much everyone is plastic and only here for the glory is incredible. Unless of course I’m an old fart and the younger generation are that shallow that they agree with you.

It doesn’t bare thinking about switching your colours. I’ve only ever known one person do it, he went from City to United in the 00’s. There are lots of reasons why people support a club and glory is rightly one of them.

I'm from Manchester, live about 11 miles from OT and a proud glory fan. I've supported Utd since 1990 and glory is all I've known and I want it back.

To be honest I'm not sure how fans of other clubs like Bolton down the road enjoy football when I find watching Utd frustrating, anger inducing, annoying and almost painful all the while it is levels above what other teams enjoy. Even the trophies won over the last few seasons since SAF have been good expect in comparison to our own history.

I am an absolute nightmare to be around when we're playing and after we lose.

We have been conditioned right or wrong to success. Therefore we are all Glory Fans.

This season is the first year I've put paying for stuff (new house, wedding etc) before going to Utd. I have skipped televised games and I have found myself happier.

My enjoyment and commitment for the club has waned and may well return with better football and success. I'm not ashamed to say that.

There are no badges or prizes for being a martyr. We are all glory fans at some level whether wishing for success or revelling in it and while there is credit in supporting a club through thick and thin for me my club is the distraction from work, family responsibilities and stress. A tribal escape that is a therapy of sorts and when that stops being beneficial I see no problems in looking for something else to fill that gap. For me that is computer games but for others it could be something else.

It is irrelevant how many games you go to or where you live it is passion that is the difference between a real fan and a plastic. My passion for Utd to return to the glory days won't ever waiver but my commitment and the importance of the club in my life certainly has.

On a serious note we all know you can change most things in life but never your football team.

We bask in the good times and suffer through the bad but our support and loyalty remains undiminished throughout the years. These are the laws of football supporters all over the world and we accept them acknowledging the joy and pain they bring.

There is no place for doubt only hope and faith. After all like you've suggested there are plenty of other ways to spend your time but make no mistake success will taste that much sweeter for those of us that stuck around.

Part of the problem is what we've grown used to, but you also need to consider the fact that everything associated with man utd comes at premium prices, from kit, to match day prices, sky TV, merchandise, which the fans all pay their hard earned money for, and make no mistake this club is a cash cow to its owners.

But if you want to charge me premium prices, I expect a premium product. Its not about winning, it's about enjoying the experience, and if I'm not enjoying it, I won't pay for it.

You can't take something that people spend a lifetime following and developing a huge emotional attachment to, then make it rubbish, and expect people to just suck it up and take it. We're right to complain, we're right to demand an inquest, and we're right to expect someone to take the fall.

Its like being married for 30 years and finding out your wife is cheating, and being told your wrong for wanting to leave.

I expect commitment from the players, I expect the manager to act in an appropriate way, I expect to be entertained by what I watch, and I expect the club to be aware of all of this and take action if it isn't being delivered. If we as fans are taken for granted then the club isn't what we've been led to believe it is.

So I'll tolerate it for a while, but sooner or later I'll lose so much interest that I'll stop caring, and at that point, football is over for me.

FZZ very general and sweeping comment calling everyone plastics bar one or two. Just because you feel a certain way does not mean that it is fact. I hate what is going at currently at united. The current predicament is not the Manchester United that I love. But that does not mean I stop supporting them until we are successful again. It sounds incredibly spoilt tbh. No matter how much I hate the dross that I served up each week, there is no way I won’t be sitting and watching us tomorrow evening. If cannot support us when we are down, then I’m afraid you don’t deserve to enjoy any success we taste in the future. There are fans of clubs that have never tasted any success. Yet they are there week in week out with their team till the very end. That is a true fan. What you have exhibited on this site is not. And I know you don’t care but for me it destroys any credibility you used to have.

Decent post DLIB for once. ;)

Its not about winning for me its about entertainment. I have like the rest of us on here stomached everything since SAF retired. But now its the horrible backwards football we are playing is the issue not the result. I've had enough of it.

Following another side apart from my home town club is never happening so that debate doesn't need to be had.

Lol, some people, that would be me.

Read your original post FZZ, I put no words in your mouth mate,

Interesting post from Utd Road and at the risk of causing more upset, Utd road started supporting when we were very successful and is now losing interest as we are ‘struggling’. I’m not having a go at individuals but trying to understand the dynamic that exists nowadays. In my day (God I sound like Red Man), you supported the team your Dad did, which more often than not was your local team. It didn’t matter whether you were winning or losing, they were your team through thick or thin. Your commitment for your clib didn’t wane, you accepted that this was part of your life. You made a choice and you lived with it.

Utd road, I’ve read your post a lot of times, your last post makes me feel physically sick mate. Your commitment has waivered, that makes you very different to to me.

Glory hunters? Feck me, one thing that you can't accuse us supporters from the 70s of being, is a glory hunter! You had to be a special type of masochist to be a Utd fan back then. I lost count of the amount of times I stormed off to my room in a huff at yet another shocking defeat to the might of Norwich or Coventry. But it was the few moments of beauty, like beating the mighty Scouse in the 77 Cup Final, against all the odds, that keeps you coming back.

FZZ, I can understand your point, especially as you get older and realise that life really is too short to waste 90 minutes of it being bored silly. You realise that a Sunday afternoon at some kid's hellhole of a playarea, is a better use of your time.

For me, having supported Utd when we were winning nothing, the trophies are a bonus, and they usually go hand in hand with good football. I just want to enjoy watching my team again, because even when we were winning nothing, we had the likes of Hill and Coppell tearing down the wings, and leaving me on the edge of my seat.

I realise this is a ramble, but I've been on the Rekorderlig tonight. Passionfruit if you must know.

Some people are either stupid or are imagining things. When and where did I say i'm following someone else?

Someone else mentioned spoilt and plastic first not me, so i replied that a majority of utd fans are plastic (another word for glory boys). You think we have 1 billion or whatever fans and a huge amount are there because of the glory days.

Somebody mainly AJH point me to the post, which I said I would follow someone else?

Also i'll write it again, I still will FOLLOW Utd and no one else unless its my home town club, I don't want to watch because its NOT entertaining.

There is a difference:- I still follow Utd but don't want to watch poor football.
Just because I don't want to watch the rubbish on display at the moment doesn't make me not a fan.

I know people who have been season ticket holders for years that won't go watch the matches anymore whilst Jose is in charge are they less of a fan of you because your on your high horse? thick and thin and all that.

Agree3 Disagree0

15 Dec 2018 22:22:29
I agree with RedD, that was a good post.

Football has changed, everything is more expensive as owners realise they can fleece fans every year with a new kit. all the money that is in the game has changed it for good.

I started going after we got promoted, I have had a season ticket since then. In those days, tickets were not the same price they are today in real terms, they were a lot cheaper.

There were no preening prima donnas a la Pogba, with image rights and all that crap.

So if the game has changed, it is fair to assume that support has changed. We wouldn't be doing world tours back then, in order to increase revenue.

Therefore the sport is all about entertainment. For me to go to the game, it takes a few hours to get there, add in the ticket cost and everything else a match can cost £100 or more, for that price I expect a level of entrainment, it is the same across all areas of entertainment.

If a film is rubbish and boring, I wouldn't pay to see it again, so what is the difference with football?

Simply, there isn't one.

And FZZ is entitled to the opinion FZZ holds. a lot of fans these days are glory hunters, and they want to ne entertained and win things, especially at the costs involved.

So I have been there from the bad days to the good days and now back to the clueless days. I do not feel entertained and I do not see a good return on investment, bearing in mind we pay for our season tickets up front.

Ridiculing someone and throwing accusations because they have a different view on what support is, is ridiculous and unnecessary.

Good post Jonny glad some get it.

Also To NC: To be fair I did say one or two are real fans on here through the olden days to the glory days and bac, k your probably in them one or two, so don't get too offended.

Heres a question, if a Utd fan can afford to buy the sports channels cable/ satellite tv but choose not too because they don't get value for the money would you ridicule and call them not real fans as well?

Every supporter has differing views as we all know from being on this site.
For me supporting united is a way of life. I still enjoy watching united. Its frustrating at the moment but i choose to watch every game.
We as a club have huge challenges and as a super that's what i enjoy and have done since to 70's
I very rarely idolize any player or manager. There are exceptions in fergie robson scholes but they all come and go.
Im enjoying in some sort of sadistic way the challenge we now face of returning to the top.
We all have our views on what we believe is the right course of action.
Im looking forward to next season and seeing what route the board choose to go down.
No matter what they decide ill be watching and supporting all the way.
It may take time and on the other hand it might happen next season.
I go into every match believing we can win.
There is no single way of supporting the club or no perfect way.

Some great points and as I said, I’ve missed games this year because I had more important things to do.

My beef is with the word plastic and the comment - “You all be supporting man united if they never won a thing and in league 2 give me a break. ” I think most of us would be supporting United whichever division we find ourselves in.

FZZ, I stretched the point about supporting other clubs based on that statement, if people stopped supporting United because they were relegated, I inferred they would support someone else.

Ken’s right, there is no single or perfect way of supporting the club, some go to every game, some watch from their armchair, some dip into the odd game. But win or lose, good or bad, it’s still your club.

Agree2 Disagree0

16 Dec 2018 11:58:41
But AJH a lot of people wouldn't be supporting Utd if they never went on to dominate through the 90's was my main point.

You are maybe an exception and a few others like I said. There is a reason Torquay don't have 6 billion followers worldwide and Man Utd do isn't they and it's not location.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Dec 2018 14:12:54
Sorry to make you feel poorly AJH, get well soon pal.

Jokes aside how'
Leeds, Forest and Villa's attendances since drop as they dropped down a league?
. It is 100% accurate that people will stop attending games if the results or performances decline. It's market dynamics. The core support remains and fair play to that group. I respect the commitment.

But Football plays different roles and priorities in everyones lives. And for me family, work and my emotional well-being will be first, football is an escape but I have been a right arse when we've played poorly or lost with my family, that's on me not Utd and my way to be a better man is to dial the emotional investment down.

To defend myself and point of view, I am 6'3 and recovering from a serious back injury which has afforded me a new perspective, going to the game is literally painful, folding myself into a seat for 2 hours is a physical and emotional investment that is not returned by my club.

Going through my recovery I've learnt or decided to remove negative influences from my life. At this moment Man Utd has become negative.

Man Utd root to branch is a toxic mess which is spreading to this very forum

I'm in Paris this weekend but have the game on record and will be draining my battery checking the scores later.

If we lose I won't be watching and I could not give a monkeys if that is poor reflection of my non tangible fan credibility.

There are no yard sticks or measures for fandom, I have respect for each of our fans, from overseas fans to died in the wool.

AJH as someone who has seen the rough times and the good times (and with respect) perhaps there's element of resentment that the you and lots of others supported Utd at the bad times, that emotional investment paid back and you like us all enjoyed the dividend but I guess it was a little sweeter for you, where as people like me (I was born in 1985) who started supporting the club at the typical time of childhood have only been accustomed to success of varying degrees over the years, you can't choose when your born. Our investment has been watching the Arsenal's 'unbearables' or Chelski, different times but as club we battled and stayed United which is a whole lot different to the 70s and 80s.

Times for many reasons are different now, people are different now and football is different now, try to pass on your experience and learning, how did you and your mates handled the bad times. Instead of shooting down a different generation for what are probably comments coming from frustration and anger of the club has become in recent years.

Peace out people and c'mom Utd!
