If reports are correct and de gea goes in the summer, who replaces him? I've been watching Anthony Lopes, only 24, from Lyon? Very under-rated in my opinion and would be a good replacement? We forget where Lloris come from and he's turned out better than expected?

If he goes it will be Valdes mate.

We need another Paddy Roche, that's what we need.

JMB,

You say that like you know it to be true, which I'm pretty sure you don't?

Agree2 Disagree4

17 Mar 2015 02:09:31
GDS- I fully expect Valdes to take De Geas place should he leave this summer and we will approach a back up keeper aka Krul or someone of that ilk.

Valdes is a favourite of LVG. He gave him
His debut at Barca in which he was number one for many years. He has years of top level experience and is still very young in goalkeeping terms.

Adding to this he was a free transfer (good business) and we are currently paying our back up goalkeeper a reported '£130k - 150k a year'. Is that really back up wages? 'IF' DDG does go then Valdes will have 12 months left on his contract to prove he can do a job for us and to win himself an extension.

If DDG stays or goes I guarantee we will not spend big on a goalkeeper as we have more pressing concerns.

Agree9 Disagree1

17 Mar 2015 08:58:53
Or is it because Ed002 hinted about Valdes further down the page?

Agree1 Disagree1

17 Mar 2015 09:25:39
He has also hinted at Krul Betty which suggests the Ed has my back in this!

Agree3 Disagree0

17 Mar 2015 09:37:15
I certainly hope that is not going to be the case JMB. I think we should look towards recruiting a young, realiable goalkeeper if DDG signed for another club.
Victor Valdez doesn't look to be a perfect replacement for DDG in my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Mar 2015 09:49:33
Fanboy - He is experienced at the top level, established, a winner and is still 'young' for a goalkeeper. Who out there is better at the moment at a realistic price?

Anyway hopefully DDG signs on and this is just conjecture!

Agree1 Disagree1

17 Mar 2015 10:30:44
JMB - the Ed has your back? Deary me mate you are very self assured aren't you?
I was actually implying in my OP that you are just repeating what the Ed had said down the page. Obviously I have misunderstood, and the Ed gets his information from you.
My apologies.

Agree1 Disagree2

17 Mar 2015 10:41:36
Anthony Lopes is a brick wall, the only issue with him is he's six foot which isn't exactly tall for a keeper. If DDG were to leave I'd be really happy with Lopes as a replacement.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Mar 2015 11:12:02
Yes Betty I seen what you mean. It is unfathomable to think that someone could form their own opinion without the EDs input.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Mar 2015 11:18:45
I think the long term solution is the Serbian kid we recently signed. We just someone in place for a few years whilst he develops. Obviously we'd all prefer de gea. But I think most of us expected him to go home at some point. Just yet again poor long term planning.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Mar 2015 11:35:53
I hope it's not Valdes, but his signing makes little sense if it isn't to replace DDG (it could also be to make DDG think he doesn't hold all the cards come contract discussion time).

I like Adrian. Wouldn't mind speaking with Chelsea about their #2 either, whilst we wait for the Serb to mature a year or two. I just don't want Valdes or Krul starting, they are error prone and we need better imo - especially if we don't strengthen our defence because "the right players aren't available".

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Mar 2015 12:07:20
I'm hoping Valdez is a stop-gap, to allow the club a bit more time to come up with a genuine alternative to DDG. It would take the pressure off timewise. He's a solid, experienced keeper who could do a job for maybe a season. If the club do think DDG is going, then his signing makes sense.

I'm loving the positivity.

Everything seemed right yesterday, we were back to our old attacking ways. Fellaini had a stormer and Carrick scored a header!

I think its blatantly obvious Rooney is our best striker and should remain in the starting XI for the rest of the season as a striker.

Blind had a great game at LB and i don't want to say it for Shaw's sake, but Blind should play there vs Liverpool.

Carrick and Herrera were fantastic, passing, moving and positioning. Young impressed again and tormented Walker all game. Mata showed why he should be playing a lot more.

Now to the main point of my post. Smalling.

Ever since his red card vs City he has come on leaps and bounds. I am very impressed with his positional play and he has picked up the ability to run forward with the ball. He is our number 1 CB at the moment and i am filled with confidence when i see him there. I think with a season or two being our CB he will become the player we all thought he was going to become. Him and Cahill would be my starting CB's for England and he fully deserves this praise. His injurys are his problem but he has stayed relatively fit of late and i for one hope this continues.

Smalling has grown as a player since that City sending off which was very stupid. He has clearly learnt a lot from Van Gaal also and plays a little like Ramos in the sense that he gets forward a lot. He and Rojo are the only two centre backs that I trust and I maintain that we need two more - but he has improved a lot and deserves credit for that. Alongside a Hummels or someone like that he would be very good.

Agree2 Disagree0

16 Mar 2015 16:20:51
I posted on the arsenal page a few weeks back when debating with them how good smalling has been since that day at the etihad and was met with the usual laughs and how they had better etc.

But I personally think he has been great for months now and should start for England in a few weeks. His distribution has improved a lot and his defending and reading of the game is top notch to boot.

His progression this season is great as I've always rated the lad and I'm made up for him he's now getting the credit he justifies. There's certainly not many in the premier ie take over him atm.

Hi Eds, thanks for the great site and your inputs.

I just wanted to put in a few words on my observation of the game which have everyone talking (including our most hated enemy).

I think we had a great set up for the back four. But one observation I had was that of Blind-Young partnership. We all know that Blind is steady but yet slow. He is able to anticipate most of the shot coming into the area but he lack speed. I have noticed that Young was able to retrace back quickly (more than a few times) to help out Blind in terms of coverage. That has left Spurs frustrated and not able to attack from that side. Indeed they both have double teamed Spurs there a few times and it worked out well.

I must commend Young that he did extremely well in that aspect and this Blind-Young partnership seems to work pretty smoothly. I do not know how much stamina Young has to be able to last 90 mins but I believe if Rojo can work with Young and Blind, these 3 could be a very strong solution for the left side. I do not see this on the right side with Valencia although I thought Valencia played well too.

One other observation was the early unsteadiness of Jones at the beginning of the game and he needs to calm down himself. Other than that, I thought Smalling played well. In fact, I thought the whole team played well and it was nice to see Carrick and Herrara holding the midfield and closing the gaps. Also nice to see were the substitutions. On the whole, happy with the 3 points but we cannot afford the complacency from here. We need to pull much more ahead of the next team below us and seal up the CL qualification if possible.

Please feel free to respond, anyone.

Valencia wasn't at all tested, when he is tested he is usually found out. I hope Rafael starts at Liverpool as Sterling will murder Valencia.

Agree2 Disagree5

16 Mar 2015 14:36:19
Fresh, I couldn't disagree more. Valencia is too strong and quick to be murdered by anyone, let alone sterling. Valencia's problems are of his own making. He makes silly mistakes. But I have never seen anyone tear him a new one. The guys a beast.

Agree2 Disagree2

16 Mar 2015 14:50:04
Yes I was initially nervous about Blind at LB due to his lack of pace but along with Young he was brilliant.

His crossing and passing was exeptional too.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Mar 2015 15:15:37
I tend to agree with you on Rafael just that I am concern about him making mindless late tackles and giving away free kicks in dangerous position. Otherwise, yes I agree that would be a better combination on the right side.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Mar 2015 15:51:48
Blind is one of the best brains on the pitch proving the first yard really is in your head. Townsend didn't no what to do against him and chadli the same.

If we stuck him in a midfield of pogba/Vidal and Herrera he would be class there. Players like him need the right set up around them and Carrick gave him that Sunday.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Mar 2015 16:18:09
Rafael is reckless at times but is positionally sound. Valencia is never where he should be and always gets sucked into the middle of the pitch leaving us exposed on the wings.

Is Ronaldo not enjoying life a RM at the minute? Not celebrating Bales goal and walking off at the end of the match whilst all the players stayed to thank the fan. Could like this lead to speculation a summer move might be on?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

16 Mar 2015 11:47:02
When is Ronaldo ever enjoying life at Madrid? Every few month's there is something coming out about him not being happy with X or Y.

I wouldn't sign him back. He has used us big style over recent years to better his contract, if he loves us so much why doesn't he demand a move, especially if he is so unhappy? I take anything coming out of Madrid or Ronaldo with a pinch of salt.

I wish we would just forget about Ronaldo. Great player? Sure. Do we need him? No. Don't get me wrong, he is world class and would vastly improve our team, but at this point he is more for himself. He is so selfish, that I think he should just play tennis. lol
Jokes aside, I saw his reaction to Bale's goal, as if to say. "that should have been my moment." Seriously? You mean it's not about the team anymore? This is why we don't need and oversize ego in the dressing room.
We need to forget about our silly little obsession with Ronaldo (as I have learned to do) because him coming back could actually do more harm than good.

Agree6 Disagree0

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Mar 2015 15:38:29
Alright he might not be everyone's number one target, but if Ronaldo re-signed this summer, there isn't a single United fan who could 'honestly' say they wouldn't happy with it. Messi and Ronaldo are still on their own level above anyone else, so any team in the world would want them. Not saying it will happen, but if it did, we'd all be very happy.

Agree3 Disagree1

16 Mar 2015 16:59:44

Agree1 Disagree5

16 Mar 2015 17:10:58
One thing I cannot stand in a player is when they do not celebrate a goal by a teammate. Ronaldo is guilty of this time and again, and so is one of our own, Van Persie. And that is one of the things I love about Rooney. He has an ego like any star player, but he is absolutely delighted when his teammates score.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - With the rules for celebrations changing again next season there will be a level playing field once more. The last change got rid of that taking the shirt off nonsense.}

16 Mar 2015 18:06:02
Ronnie is the 2nd best player of the world, I would take him in a heart beat for the player he is, but he is such a fanny. Frowning at one of your team mates scoring??? That is beyond any petulance. He does it time and again. I mean a brilliant footballer who is filthy rich is upset or sad about most of the things? I hope he realizes it's Real Madrid FC and not Ronaldo FC

Deeps.

16 Mar 2015 20:24:11
I don't care what he does, he is actually a very good professional and to say he's lost his hunger is silly. He wouldn't react that was if he Wansnt bothered. He would make a HUGE difference to our chances next season, sell god knows how many shirts, and be te premier leagues best player. I would carry him back myself

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Mar 2015 21:17:51
Ronaldo coming back could actually disrupt the club. He would never get on with LVG as his ego is of epic proportions. Over the past few years I have noticed that he is all for himself, and forgets that he should actually play for the team. I love CR7, and wished that he would return for years but now I think we should move on. We should focus on youth with potential such as Depay.

On the back of probably our best performance this season i thought it was high time i shared a few thoughts with you all
RVP's injury and falcao not being the player he was have forced us to play wayne up front and it is amazing how much more threatening we look with someone who has good movement, pace and aggression leading the line. I wonder therefore if we need either RVP or falcao as both IMO are past their best due to age/injury.It would also get best part of £500k per week off the wage bill Yes we would need to sign another striker but i would rather have someone aged say between 21-25 with pace and potential as opposed to 2 ageing players whose best days are behind them
I was delighted to see fellaini get a huge ovation as he left the pitch yesterday having copped pelters all of last season. You have to admire his determination to prove that he deserves to be a utd player. I do however see both him and to a lesser extent Young to be options rather than solutions. There will always be times when fellaini's bulk and aggression will be useful but generally i would prefer someone with quick feet/mind and better technical ability to play in an attacking midfield role. As regards Young he is another player that copped it last year that is now almost an automatic pick. It does seem strange however that you pay £60 for ADM and then ask him to play out of position wide on the right. I am a great believer in square pegs in square holes and if you pay a huge fee for a world class player you play him in his best position where he will be most effective. This will mean young stepping down but a fully focused ADM has to be more threatening than Young, well as the latter is playing.
Finally turning my attention to the future i will give my four penneth re future additions( without naming specific players). As i said earlier i like square pegs to fit square holes. I don't like wingers(valencia) or centre backs(jones, smalling) being asked to play RB so signing a specialist right back makes good sense if raphael is out of favor. As regards CB i would get rid of evans and bring someone else in. The name in the frame would appear to be Hummels but i wouldn't rush straight in bearing in mind his fee and his lack of pace. There may be other options. LVG has already said that he wants to sign a world class midfielder. IMO this needs to someone who is primarily going to sit in front of the back four and who is going to be a long term replacement for Carrick. Whilst talking about midfielders i was delighted to see perraira? get some game time yesterday He is an outstanding talent who needs to be tied down soon to avoid another pogba situation developing.I have already talked about bringing another striker in so will not do so again. I would also strengthen our wide right options. I don't like left footers( ADM mata) playing there as they will always have to cut in. On other occasions both fellaini and wazza have also been asked to play there which i feel is ridiculous. Valencia, like Young i see as an option not a solution and equally i am not sure that Janujai? is ready for a full season playing in that position. Like perraira though i do feel that it is important that both get game time as both will be terrific players for us in the future.
Finally let's hope yesterday was the beginning of a strong run in which shoukd, fingers x have us back in the CL next year.

We need top players NOW and future top players for a nice balanced squad. We still in my mind have good squad players like Young, Smalling, Carrick, Blind etc., but we need more top players and a few younger players to replace those deemed not good enough anymore like Evans, Valencia, Falcao, RVP (although I think he will see out his deal). If it was me, I'd get rid of RVP and Falcao and try our utmost to finally sort a deal for Ronaldo if he is available. Get Hummels as the leader of the defense and look at Laporte. Gundogan in the middle and Clyne at right back and we would be looking at a stellar starting XI with youngsters like Januzaj, Wilson and maybe Depay if we get him.

Agree1 Disagree1

16 Mar 2015 13:48:16
Agree with almost everything there mate, Fellaini and young will be great squad players. however, ADM is a right winger, he played there every year for Madrid (bar his last where he almost played right of a midfield 3), either way, he's a right winger and his bad performances this season can't be put down to LVg playing him out of position.

Nice to see all the 'negative posters' giving credit to LVG and the team in regards to their performance yesterday.

Believable11 Unbelievable4

16 Mar 2015 11:25:13
JMB,

I think the problem is that most of the people who have been saying LVG should be given some time to get it right have had to listen to a lot of drivel from people this season about how we should sack the manager, how terrible we are, how we have blinkers on because we can't see what all your 'realists' can see.

But now suddenly we are playing a bit better and it's suddenly all rosy again and changed. Surely the people who said we should wait and see how it goes rather than jumping on the teams back are seeming more reasonable and justified than ever?

There has been a lot of negativity on here, and still will be if we lose on Sunday (football fans are fickle individuals) but it is nice to see a bit of positivity and optimism after yesterday.

I have said all season there would be ups and downs along the way and we shouldn't overreact to a good win or a bad defeat, let's just see how the season pans out, so I am not overreacting to yesterday, it was good to see us play much better and all the smiling faces leaving the ground were wonderful to see, but it was one performance, it needs to be like that more often and fingers crossed it will be, but let's not get carried away just yet.

Agree7 Disagree6

16 Mar 2015 13:30:11
What is the point of getting rid of the manager as some have been wanting all season? He is a tried and tested top manager, so he has to be given time.
In addition, both Mata and Fellaini are coming good now after they have settled for a year, I was one of the wrong ones to have critisised them in the past. And we have bought so many new players at the start of this season and all of them have to be given time to settle and we will only see the best of them next season.

Agree3 Disagree5

16 Mar 2015 20:27:28
To be fair I think the only person who has called for LVG to get the chop is beast. Everyone else is happy enough to give him to the end of the season and see where we go from there.

What I am getting at is ovboiusly we don't have outright 'negative' posters on here. Everyone has congratulated the team and the manager for the Spurs game and rightly so. When plaudits are deserved they are ovboiusly given and when not then their deserves to be criticism. It's a two way streak.

Fact is, we completely outplayed Spurs from the first minute to the last, we didn't allow them to settle and we created a lot of chances.
