Well that puts the Khedira rumours to bed! He has done his anterior cruciate ligaments!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Was just thinking thank god we didn't spend 40m on him in summer. Once the ligaments go you're always injury prone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yep. he's in a hospital a few miles away from me and according to the local radio is just about to go under the knife.

Yes, United were champions last year, but pretty much all the pundits agreed it was not a great side. In fact I'd say it might have been SAF's greatest achievement to win with it.

We were all confused by United's approach to the summer transfer market, but we should consider the real possibility that Moyes genuinely wanted to assess the talent he had on hand before spending big. To just spend millions on players before determining whether they will gel with the existing squad and be suited to any tactical shifts, would be contrary to his natural instincts.

And, of course, it really must have been a tremendous upheaval for the players to see the whole back room staff change in one fell swoop along with the retirement of their iconic manager. But, other than some RVP training grumbles, he does now seem to have gained control of the dressing room.

So all in all, what looked like a man out of his depth may just have been a new manager certain of the road he was taking, and not kowtowing to the clamour of the press and fans. Let us hope this is the case, and that he has a good plan - and that the club will pony up the required investment. I think they have to. The cost of failing to remain a regular Champions League team far outweighs the cost of the investment required to strengthen the squad.

A 4th place finish this year will be a success in my book. Anything better than that would be a fantastic achievement.

We will win the league this season.

Agree0 Disagree0

I believe Manchester United will end up champions.We have the players that have been there and done it, our form is improving and I believe we'll make good signings in january.We as Manchester United fans have to believe, top by christmas.

Agree0 Disagree0

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks we can win the league.I was saying that right after the loss to WBA and people were questioning me, rightly so though(we were looking doomed at that time).

One of the best posts I've read in a while. Couldn't agree more peashooter. Posts everything into perspective.

@ OP

You must be at the wind up. You're one of these folk that says they'll be happy to come fourth knowing fine well it would be totally unacceptable to anyone who understands what Manchester United is all about.

Here's an example; when LFC were points clear at the top of the table in 2009, many of their fans said "I'd take top 3." Now, in what fantasy world is it acceptable to be top and in pole position to win a league title then finish third?

People like you and those LFC fans say these things to cover your back on the off chance that your team doesn't fulfill expectations that anyone would understandably have in such positions.

Manchester United should never be happy to accept fourth place and any real Manchester United fan should be embarrassed to say such things.

Agree0 Disagree0

OMR clearly you don't understand what being a Manchester United fan is about. Win or lose, premiership or league one, 1st or 18th; we support Manchester United. Its not about the fans expectations anyway, it's about the team, and what they can achieve together.

I think a top four finish is a good achievement for Moyes this season.

Just remember, even Sir Alex Ferguson didn't achieve that in his first full season with the club. Change takes time, Manchester United know that better than most clubs.

Agree0 Disagree0

Moyes inherited a team that had just won the league, SAF inherited a poor team. Moyes has to address a couple of areas in the team whereas SAF had to address not just the team but the ethos and structure of the club. Major difference and for me means there is no excuse for finishing lower than third. We didn't need major change but Moyes conducted more change on the back room staff than I think was necessary, which like his appointment was a risk.

After one result against Arsenal the eternal optomists are out again. Looking at the next couple of games Jones and Carrick will be out of what was a poor midfield and the game away to Spurs looked difficult anyway.

They may be behind us but I still view City as the quality team this season and I would be surprised if we were to win it. It would take a quality midfield addition in January who hit the ground running to be anywhere near.

@ Covey

You've actually managed to prove my point with yet another cop out statement. I'm sick hearing that "Sir Alex never achieved this and that in his first season so neither should Moyes."

There is no comparison between the situation when SAF took over and the situation now. Moyes is taking over a team who are reigning champions, who are showing once again they are good enough to compete in the Premier League, Moyes is taking over the biggest club in the world, which we weren't even close to in 1986. Moyes is taking over a world wide phenomenon who can financially compete with the very best and can attract the best players. So he is not in anywhere near the same situation as SAF therefore expectations are not the same, please don't say they are as you make yourself look stupid.

Manchester United is about supporting the team regardless, of course it is. But so is any club, supporting your team theough thick and thin is not what sets United apart, it's the least you expect, What sets us apart is our eyes always being on the prize. We are EXPECTED to win every game, every tournament we enter and win them playing attractive football. Of course that isn't always possible, but the players, management and real fans have to believe we can do it and have to expect to be competitive at all times, if they don't meet those standards they don't last long in association with this club. Imo your attitude is that of a defeatist.

As a supposed United fan, to say you would be happy with fourth from a team that won the league last season by a large margin is laughable.

Agree0 Disagree0

OMR, look at our squad, we clearly overachieved last season. RVP was immense. I think it would be harsh on the players to expect the same after so much upheaval. I would normally agree with you, but in his first season, top four is expected yes, but champions, I think not.

Next season if we make the right signings, I am all for expecting the team to win the league. I just don't think its a realistic expectation at this point in time, with the squad we have (being SO SO light in midfield).

I think £16 million represents good value for Baines for what he would being us. We would get at least 4 years out of him and he is one of the leagues best players. Buying up the leagues best talent is a good policy to me, look at the success that it has brought Bayern. Also interesting to see that meulensteen would go all out for Gundogan, I hope that Moyes agrees. Those two would greatly improve the time, we wouldn't need anyone else but a left sided attacker would be a luxury. Seems to be that our choices will be one of Sanchez, Griezmann or Reus.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Baines is 29 good player but I think he may be to old, I don't think we will go for a new first choice lb in Jan I think we will Waite untill the summer when evra leaves . The start of next season Baines will be 4 month of 30
Gundagon would be a great signing but I think he is off to Madrid

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we will buy Baines or Coentrao. Baines is clearly first choice, but if he doesn't push for a move then I think a move is unlikely as Everton will not budge on their valuation. Baines is 29, better than Evra in nearly every department. I think he would be an excellent buy. His corners and freekicks will be a great asset. he isn't too shabby at defending either. Most of us would prefer Luke Shaw, but I don't see pigs flying anytime soon.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would rather we signed Coentrao than Baines, mainly because he's much younger.Either would make me happy though.

Agree0 Disagree0

I still think baines will have to push it through, chelsea dropping cole is interesting, I wouldn't be suprised to see them maybe enter if the price is right! {Ed002's Note - Chelsea have no interest in him - they have already other players they would prefer at left back.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I would take coentrao over Baines all day long, hasn't had a great time at Madrid but for me is the better play and 4 years younger.
For me Baines defending is average but his attacking is good but the main issue for me is I don't we will sign a lb untill the summer and Baines will be approaching 30

Anyone watch Portugal v Sweden last night? I was watching it in Portugal and all the Portuguese fans wanted to shoot nani. He was hopeless. Misplaced passes. Couldn't beat his man.
in contrast, Ronaldo was superb and should have scored more than one.
Also, as I posted many months back, moutinho was superb and moyes should have broken the bank to get him. {Ed002's Note - Manchester United, at one time, tried to buy Moutinho.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Just goes to show how a goal can change someone's perception of a game. Ronaldo was decent but far from 'superb'. There were many players on the pitch who had a stinker last night.

Would there be any chance of him leaving Monaco? {Ed002's Note - I wouldn't think so.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Why not? I'd leave my tax free wages on the beautiful southern French Coast to come to Manchester. Some people eh?
