Just a quick one for you all to mull over.

Would you rather the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to cover up the cracks in midfield and just outscore everyone!

Or the signing of both Fabregas and Modric/Vidal and deal with our problem, the midfield.

Both options would cost around £60-£65 Million in my opinion.

Not going to say anything negative as i'm just happy the football is back on and want to congratulate the team. All four goals were quality.

Vidal and fabregas for me. {Ed007's Note - Ozil and Jame McCarthy would have me doing naked star-jumps all over FR Towers.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Ozil and Gustavo would have been perfect but, Ozil and Vidal would now be my choice, what would that be? Around 65-70m?

What have we learnt from today's game.

Firstly we're not far away from being a real top side again in Europe. I think 2 real quality CM, possibly a forward and we would have a chance

David Moyes is very good at organising his team, fitness and I like how he makes his players press rather than sit back

Tom Cleverly is not good enough and will never be the standard we need, as much as I'd like him to be he isn't

Rooney clearly wants out. Body language said a lot today, although I would love him to stay as I still think he's a top player

Don't get carried away with Welbeck, although great finish for his second he has a LOT of work to do to become a top player

If RVP got injured we would struggle with Welbeck and Hernandez up top

Here's hoping we do something in the market this week, a real world class midfielder and well be in with a great chance

I can't remember ever coming on here and reading anything positive about Welbeck yet now you would think that everyone on here always thought he was class. just goes to show how 1 game can make or break a player.

on another note Rooneys reaction to United scoring is in my eyes nothing short of treason to the club. every United fan in the ground going crazy as were the rest of the team and he truds back not giving a flying **** he got applauded on by them fans sticking by him when its obvious (now for certain) that he wants out. if he wasnt on his ridiculous wages I would let him rot in the reserves.

Well that was an impressive start.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, we still desperately need 2 midfielders, and a left sided player, but the tactical side of our game has clearly improved. There was no allowing the opposition to come onto us, we worked harder off the ball and surrounding team mates made themselves available to receive the ball more often.

I worry what would happen if Carrick got an injury. It really is pivotal we get a Fabregas type player in this window. Giggs was awful. gave the ball away constantly and didn't seem up to the pace of the game. Cleverley was his usual self. Really baffles me how he is first choice with Carrick.

The defence was solid for most of the game. good to see Vidic and Rio back together. Still the best partnership in the world in my opinion. Jones and Evra did well. Evra especially seemed to improve defensively.

What can be said about RVP. Simply brilliant. The second goal was great, but the first was a top finish. Not many strikers will take a chance like that. Pray to God he doesn't get injured. Welbeck already matched his tally from last season. nice to see him get in the six yard box. What a striker should do. His 2nd goal was absolutely brilliant.

Not much can be said about Rooney. Played alright, and set up 2, but looked slightly downbeat and disinterested. Interesting 2 weeks ahead. I wonder will he play against Chelsea?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with everything you have said.

.but surely you're not being critical of TC? Some on here seem to think that because we won 4-1 today that automatically makes him a good player. I've actually heard a rumour that Tom Cleverley stands with his back to the urinals.apparently he even passes water backwards. MAJ.

Agree0 Disagree0

I thought our passing and movement especially in the first half was diabolical and could have been punished by a top side.valencia was a shadow of his former self as he continues to pick up right were he left off last season.cleverly is limited and just isn't good enough, giggsy although can show class at times will not last 90mins.on the other hand Welbeck is getting better, RvP is just world class and it was good to see vidic and rio getting 90mins and playing well!i will say this if Rvp gets injured we could struggle or if carrick(although I do feel he's sluggish) gets injured we could be in trouble!

Good team display from the lads but a few worrying things were notable today.
1. Giggs starting the first game of the season in Midfield is a red flag, He has quality but doesn't have the legs pace or strength anymore.
2. Our midfield was good but still looked light weight to me.
3. When Rooney came on he seemed to want to be involved but is clearly lacking in match fitness and needs to get his touch back, seemed to take a knock in his part of Welbecks final goal, hopefully won't be to bad.
4. Concentration seems to be an issue with our defenders who seemed very rigid and slow to react to Swansea's attacks.
5. DDG may have picked up a knock and Lindegaard may not be upto holding down he Number 1 spot.
6. Despite Welbecks 2 goals I think he was a little bit silly in possession, trying to work your way out of the trouble with skill can back fire and it certainly did, it was his mistake that lead to The Swans Goal. Which clearly left Ferdinand very frustrated.

Positives.
1. RVP
2. Evra looked good the entire game and seemed to be a good attacking outlet aswell.
3. Valencia had a good game and when Rafael comes back, our right side will be lethal.
4. Jones played well at RB but would rather see him partnering Carrick in midfield.
5. Rooney's involvement. on for 28 minutes and 2 assists. Hopefully this means he will stay. His body language did look a bit apathetic but hopefully it won't prevent him from staying at the club as he is undoubtedly still quality.
6. Good to see a strong CB paring of Vidic and Ferdinand, hoping they can stay fit and injury free as they are a great asset to the team when fit.
Overall good match, Glad the season is finally underway and United top of the league already :P
James

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Positives? And no mention of welbeck? I don't honestly know what the majority of you don't see in this lad, he IS a player of top potential and for what a lot of you say about fergie not playing youth then you need look no further than welbeck who has proved a perfomer for England and will be for us given the game time, and there could be arguments that he already has but not put the ball In the net enough, I for one think there's no better English lad in the league with an all Round game better than him right now and it's right he gets the chance with us.

Sell rooney right now and it was one assist not two and to not even go towards you're team mates after a goal pathetic he is going to be an person if we keep him. Spend the money we sell him for on cm welbeck hernandez and rvp up front is enough we will be a lot better without him imo hate sulky stroppy players its obvious he wants out and is never going to commit to United so sell and replace like we have done with all the big names before that have left.
Browred

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It was two. In Welbecks goal he picked up a knock from a late challenge so can forgive him that and RVP's goal wrapped the game up, also he hasn't said one word about leaving, has clearly been training well enough to warrant playing and if he is going to continue assisting and scoring then why sell him? until he starts publicly kicking up a fuss then keep him as we'll never replace him.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, I think it is disgraceful for someone who is paid 200k a week not to celebrate for a teammate, setting club issues aside. The guy is p.o.s. and for his supporters, who think at any cost he is worth keeping you are wrong and misguided.

The other players will step up as that is the united way. I can't believe the club is going to keep him given his demeanor. He is going to get booed to high heavens after that at OT.

If we are making a statement by refusing to sell him for whatever behind the scenes rubbish his camp has been up to, then send him to the reserves and play him there for few months until he cleans up his attitude.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney had played no more than 67 minutes of football before today yet when he came on, he showed that he has great ability knowing who is around him for example the pass to RvP for his second goal and then the run on the outside to give the defender a headache. I think we've missed him a lot in our preseason which is why our attack didn't look as composed and organised as we'd usually expect.

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

Stop making excuses for poor Wayne. I don't think he was shot in the leg, his demeanor is shocking.

Question for some of the older posters? Have we ever had a a player behave like this pre fergie time, I am speechless that we are allowing this to carry on in front of a national audience.

IMO the score flattered us, Swansea were a lot better than what it suggests. They will definitely cause a lot of probs to our competitors with the likes of Michu and Bony.
From our end I was very impressed with Welbeck in particular. Great movement and took the 4th very well.

RVP needs no evaluation, only our dependency is slightly high on him.
Valencia has impressed me, he was a complete nuisance for the highly rated swans. Coupled with Rafael, he'll be an entity of old.
Jones would be better protecting Carrick and the back 4, or partnering Vidic/Evans (although Ferdy was great too). He gets sucked into the middle too easily which causes us problems when at right back.
I felt Evra was good, looking quite lean too.
Giggs should stick to coaching now, far too erratic.
And Rooney.? I'm lost. It actually looked as though he hobbled off at FT just for an excuse to be injured. I wish he would stop this stubborn stance and show a bit more professionalism. We need him, and he knows it. (For back up to RVP lol 'Oooooo Robin Van Perrrrsie')
Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Rooney did take a knock from Michu in the build up to the Welbeck goal, When he came on he did look like he was making an effort but did seem like he needed match practice
James

Agree0 Disagree0

The score did not flatter us, in the final third we can be devastating mainly due to RVP. Welbeck could become a player this season however he needs a rocket up his jacksy for causing their goal. Rooney has nil class, he wants to go therefore let him go to a foreign team and wish him the best. What could this squad do with a couple of class midfielders? Awesome first game and the David Moyes song is brilliant.

Sad to see a player so unhappy at utd.

Well don't the lot of you look like a right full of dip sticks! As AJH said yesterday, don't post during the game with your pathetic knee-jerk reactions, it's terrible!

Yes we had a slow start but Swansea played well and put up a great fight.

Van Persie scored two beautiful goals which were a delight. Especially the second one!

And let's not forget Danny, beaten his record from last season in 1 match! His chip at the end was lovely to see and made up for his mistake for their goal.

Happy chappy with that performance, can't wait to see some new faces to add to our already strong squad.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I posted this morning just how good this squad of ours is you win things by being strong defensively and today we showed that in abundance no other team have our back up at centre half and that's why they fall short yes RVP and co upfront are important but never lose sight the importance of a solid back five.
The same Old names come out immediately when we lose but are very slow to praise a top performance!
Dylan

Agree0 Disagree0

I didn't think we started slowly, a team that plays like Swansea in their first home game of the season were always going to come out pumped up and therefore we needed to take the sting out of them and quieten the crowd. 2 minues after we did that what happened, goal. I think we were very efficient and showed great experience in the first half hour.

The boy sure can finish.
Welbeck good display as a forward surely put those doubters to bed.Yes only 1 game though against a good swansea team on their own patch, playing in a position more natural to him than left wing the YOUNG lad showed what he could do, some fans need more faith in our home grown talent. Most fans tend to want the youth coming through then slate the performance.Patience is crucial with young players as is shown today.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He clearly has potential, don't think anyone with a football brain can deny that. However, one game absolutely does not prove the doubters wrong. I like him and think he will be a big player for us for many years, but he has to grow up and start maturing in to the player he can clearly be on a consistent basis. Thus far, he has had more bad games than good in a United jersey.

This is just result Mr Moyes needed, well done but let's hope he won't get carried away and also like SAF say we can do with what we have and so not sign the 2 central midfielders he promised us, . I still believe we need the central midfielders despite our excellent victory today. , but we struggled a lil in the middle

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We have struggled in the middle for 4 to 5 years now, not a problem created by dm and in all honestly if top quality players are not available, why waste money on average guys.

Look at Buttner what a waste of money. Maybe we buy in the january window if we don't get the right players before the summer transfer deadline.

Well, I've waited until the end of the match and what is there to say? What odds would we have got on that score? Some of the posts have been the usual nonsense - slating off Welbeck seems a little misguided. The one thing that stood out for me was that Rooney aside, we looked like team, all in it together and pulling in the same direction. Yes we arestilllight in midfield but what a great start to the season. As I have said previously, a couple of good signings and we are right up there. One poster said we need at least 5 signings, sorry mate but the muppet show finished years ago so I'm sorry you are now out of work. De Gea looks more confident, RVP oozed class as usual, Welbeck arsed about and cost us a goal but then made up for it with a delightful 4th. Swansea will do well this season and we just scored 4 and never looked in trouble. But I'm sure some will find plenty to moan about eh?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Couldnt agree with yoh anymore ajh, I thunk few signings wed be up there challenging for trophies, certainly a very good start to the season.

1. To everyone who thinks David Moyes will not be a success, please reconsider. I think this result shows he is going to work hard and our team is not going to be brushed aside.

2. People who want Rooney out of the club, he played just 28 mins today and got 2 assists. That's how important he is.

3. Welbeck is going to come good. Okay the first goal was a tap in but he was in the right position, at the right time. He needs to do that more often and the goals will come. The second goal was just brilliant. Shows the confident he has in himself.

4. Valencia looks more confident than he did throughout the last season. Let's hope he regains his best form.

5. Rvp. That guy is unstoppable. The first goal was great. On the second, I thought at the moment I wanted him to pass it Rooney, who made a good run but then he scored a screamer.

6. And lastly, I want new players to come in as much any other Manchester United fan but if for whatever reason no major signing is made, I'll support this team and every single player like I do every season.

Hoping this result is a start of a great era under David Moyes.
Thank You :)

Firstly well done Moyes who realised that we could get overrun in the centre of midfield and made sure by having 3 centrally that it wouldn't happen. With SAF he would have stuck with two in the middle and it would have been touch and go. Giggs or Valencia tucked in and that made a difference. Second well done to Moyes is whatever he said to Welbeck pre season because for today at least he was a different player and actually looked comfortable in front of goal. Maybe just maybe I might backtrack on Welbeck if he continues the improvement.
RVP looked a class act and the message is clear buy quality in key positions and it makes a difference. His hold up play was truly excellent and his finishing true quality. Wrap him up in cotton wool.
We certainly closed down further up and actually looked more comfortable in possession. Evra actually looked the player he was 3 years ago.
Good start but away at Swansea is tough so credit to Moyes for the set up of the team.
Giggs should not be in the team and for me there are several places that would benefit from quality improvements.

I felt we had more calm control than in the last two seasons with more intelligent tactics but let's not kid ourselves, we need top quality reinforcements in two positions, centre and left midfield. Great start to Moyes reign though and let's enjoy that without getting over confident.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Maybe Moyes was the reason Baines is the player he is today?!

Adz

Agree0 Disagree0

This is exactly what I thought, especially when Ando came on for RvP to put a solid 3 in the middle. SAF would not have done it and it was refreshing to see us look to control the midfield to close out the game, rather than sit back and allow them onto us.

Lots of pros tonight but also a few cons, so not getting carried away. Delighted with the result though and with the performance of RvP, the defence and Valencia and Welbeck at times.

Opening up a can of worms probably. Divisive to say the least. My take on Wayne's cameo today. He played well, touch was much better. 2 assists, did a fair bit of running. Just showed that he has undeniable class(unlike what a few think here) and even when not scoring just improves our general attacking play by a few notches. He did not look enthusiastic, vocal or expressive. I feel bad about that. But its clear Moyes and the management will not sell him to Chelsea at all costs.

Like I have said earlier, he is a professional, he will knuckle down and do his bit. And if people think without replacing him, we can flog him off, they need to get their heads checked. Did more in 30 minutes than what Giggs did in an hour.

IMO, the body language will certainly improve once the transfer window and its shannigans are over. I stick to my stand, it will be madness selling him to Chelsea. I don't want to be up against a fit and motivated Wayne Rooney.

Deeps.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

All united have to do is to come out and say he didn't ask for a transfer and I'm sure he'll be better.
But I think we're too stubborn to do that. Saf is gone now, so let's try and keep Rooney.

Wowsers! How quick were some of you with the knives after 15 minutes!? :o) What I could sense more than anything was a real sense of authority from the team.
I don't think many teams will bully us this year. Oh, and all the Cleverley haters, I think I may have worked out his value to the team and squad. and i'll qualify this by stating that i'm not a Cleverley fanboy. he's a tidy player, nothing more.
I was impressed with his workrate today, he covered a lot of ground, (i'd like someone with more time and the inclination to look up his running stats), and a really important point is his makeup in the fabric of the squad ; he seems to me as a player that will never rock the boat and do his job when called upon, which is an invaluable asset. he kinda reminds me of a slightly better Ray Parlour. We all know that's not a complement, but i'll bet that his teammates appreciate him.
Anyways, I don't know how this turned into a defence of, 'The Brand'. Rainfish is going to rip the sh*t outta me. :o) Also, if Welbz carries on like that, he's going to be some player. ;o)

Overall a good game, especially as a first game.I personally didn't agree with the starting lineup but it soaked up a lot in the first 20mins.
Welbeck looks good and up for it, I think he looks more natural on the wing than up front. Evra played well and his supply was good.Tom Cleverly is as frustrating as ever but I do like the fact he challenges very well and is not afraid to tackle he broke up some good play today.Vidic and Ferdinand were as quality as ever.Giggs played well as expected but is not a natural cm where he ended up for most of the game.Tony V looks hungry i'm hoping the competition with Zaha improves both of them.De Gea looks solid and comfotable.R.V.P. WOW, and Rooney looked good hope we keep him because fit he'll prove his worth and critics wrong. Moyes seems happy and tactically got it spot on today as the result proves.

1-4 at Swansea on the opening day is fantastic, very pleased with that result. Some cracking goals, too.

But I hope that isn't the reason that will be used when we don't buy anyone - we STILL need quality in the middle of the park, and if Moyes says he's going to move on with what we have, we could struggle. Our midfield is simply average, as usual.

Wouldve loved to have seen Zaha and Kagawa get some game time, but otherwise, great result and that should get the media off Moyes' back for now!

Great result. It should boost the team's confidence ahead of the next equally or even more difficult matches.

The defence looked rock solid today.Ok Swansea got some chances but Moyes has brought a defensive imrpovement to our team for sure. The whole back line was really convincing, including Evra.

Still we have to sign midfielders before the end of the window.Cleverley was knocked out of the ball too many times and lacked creativity as always. We need to sign a defensive midfielder to allow Carrick to burst forward, I think he did this 2 or 3 times today and he was really dangerous. But why Giggs ahead of Kagawa? This season is expected to be his season, isn't it?

Van Persie was class as always.Good to see Welbz get two goals as well, he's already improved his league goal tally from last season :D.We didn't have the chance to see much of Rooney today, but he got an assist and he looked good imo.

Roll on Chelsea!Hope we will have grabbed a signing or two before then.

Seriously hope that shuts up the doom mongers that have been trolling this site for weeks now.

Its very easy to forget the quality within the existing squad when watching sugar-daddy driven clubs splashing ridiculous sums of money on overseas players.

Welbeck was class today even though he was at fault for the goal. Cleverly no doubt will have his haters, but what the hell do you want from him guys. He did the simple well.

Many things to work on defensively, but 4-1 at Swansea is a superb result. To this point nobody has reason to complain but no doubt somebody will find an "angle" to do so!

Good start, I'm very happy with that. Efficient, effective, solid and we haven't really found out anything we didn't know.

We still require a bit more dig in the midfield as Cleverley just won't cut it, I'm not really sure what he brings, if anything.

Not sure how anyone can't see that Fellaini would improve our midfield massively.

We need Kagawa in the team as well, his creativity and ability to drift across the line between midfield and attack is very dangerous and we miss him when he isn't playing.

Of course yet more evidence that RvP is the best striker in the world bar none. Cavani, Falcao etc couldn't lace his boots.

Also nice to see Rooney getting a good reception from the United fans, just goes to show despite his petulance and lack of communication to keep us in the loop, we stay loyal to our players.

Come on United!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with most of this Steve. We'll clearly be competitive this season but our midfield didn't shine today against moderate opponents ( and I'm Welsh!). Giggs is 40 in 3 months, Cleverly is not Utd class but our strikers, as they did last season, rescued us. If we got Cesc and Fellaini we'd be much stronger. We can but hope.

Danny Welbeck needs to stop p1ssing about in our own half! Always tries to play his way out of trouble!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yeah, what a muppet, especially scoring 2 goals as well

Agree0 Disagree0

Just because he scored his second doesn't negate the fact it was his mistake that lead to the Swansea goal. ask the team which would they prefer 3-0 or 4-1? I think the majority would prefer the prior if I am being honest.

I think Zaha should have come on at about 60 minutes for Valencia. Antonio has looked very sluggish and very poor today besides the pass to Welbeck he hasn't done anything.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Come on, he worked his ass off defending and put in a professional shift. Lay off him

Agreed George. Did not look like beating his man. Not a good game. Though he does offer defensive cover to the full back.

Can someone please explain to me how Tom Sideways is a Manchester United 1st team player.what does he offer other than 3 yard lateral passes? And don't give me this nonsense that his little sideways passes make space for other people because that is clearly not the case. Andreas Iniesta he ain't. MAJ

How important is it that a club has players come through the ranks, progress and then establish themselves as first team players? I guess you have no bloody clue. and then become internationals and then get abused by their own fans on internet forums. you should have been watching UTD in the 80's when a good cup run was the best we could hope for! {Ed007's Note - Surely it is more important that he is a quality player and not just in the team because he came through the youth academy?}

Agree0 Disagree0

Zzz. FFS get off his back. This really is getting tedious now. He was in a side that one 4-1 yet you slate him for not being as good as one of the top three players in the world (some may say Iniesta is THE best!)

I know you want banter and traffic to the site Eds but there's a point where these types of comments become as pathetic as the people that make them.

Rant over. {Ed007's Note - I wouldn't say your post is pathetic, that's a bit harsh on yourself.}

GDS2. sorry if I have offended you in some way. You seem to have taken my comments a bit personally! I am not slating one of our own players for the sake of it.In fact I am not even trying to slate the lad.I just don't see what he brings to the team.Yes he is a "steady" player, but is that really good enough for a top team like Manchester United? He is 24 years old now, so the arguement that he is still young and will be a top player is a bit lame really.I genuinelly think that if a player is going to be top class, he has shown more by the age of 24. I was not trying to compare him to Iniesta in my earlier post because that would be unfair on most players, but if Tom Cleverley is going to become a top player he needs to improve.and improve quickly.

So far so good. We are still a very capable team and can obviously get the job done despite what the usual nit-pickers will say. A bit more flair and a little bit of dig in the middle and we will be fine. A fit Wayne Rooney just off RvP, Kagawa drifting from left to centre and possibly Fellaini in the middle beside Carrick would do me nicely. Anything else is a bonus.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

That's what the 'nit pickers' want. So how come if the nit pickers want two good signings, then they are shot down in flames.

not the prettiest game but definitely an indication of Moyes' style. the three behind van persie swapping about, tracking back by the wide players and for those worried about champions league experience, this is classic away side stuff, I'd say. and yes the lack of buccaneering play in attack is unfortunate but it's his first game, on the road and without 3 of his best attacking players, zaha, rooney and kagawa.

There we are doom mungers 4-1, we are Manchester United so get behind us or jog off to rubbishty

17 Aug 2013 17:14:24
Im not a Giggs basher, I love the guy and dread the day he retires but I do get a negative feeling when he is in the starting line up as I think at nearly 40 he should be an impact sub in the squad and we should have better, quicker, younger midfield players who are going to be first on the team sheet.Looking at the team sheet I think we have an exceptionally strong bench, taking into account the people not involved today obviously a strong squad but I think we need a stronger more scary looking starting line up(mainly midfield), its been too long since we struck fear into our opponents via the names on our sheet.
I think we'll survive this season without new faces but I think it'll be our hardest season to date and Moyes won't be making things easy for himself.

So rumours are saying United are preparing a £25m move for Fellaini.

I really hope this is NOT true. For me Fellaini is highly over-rated. He will stand out as a key player at Everton because he is a big fish in a little pond. If he came to United he would be a little fish in a massive pond and I really don't think he'll be good enough

If Moyes was willing to spend £35m on Fabregas. Why not go for a different midfielder who is in the same league as Fabregas?

Someone like Modric or Schweinsteiger wouldn't cost anymore than £35m. why not try for one of these?

Why Fellaini? Why-O-Why?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

United need 2 midfielders. I honestly think that if Fellaini is signed for £25 million there will still be a separate budget for a player like Fabregas.

Just scouring through a few newspapers and it is reported that Real Madrid have offered us Ozil for 40m. If this is true then we should snap him up as at 24 he is a world class talent and will only get better.

Also Coentrao has handed in a transfer request so maybe a 50m double bid (35m Ozil 15m Coentrao) could tempt Madrid to sell and we could then loan out Buttner to either Benfica or Besiktas.

Many people will question where does Ozil fit in when we have Rooney and Kagawa in the same position. There are a few scenarios possible.

1. We Keep Rooney

If this scenario occurs then we could play a 4-2-3-1 formation with 'inverted' wingers who play more centrally then conventional wingers. This would suit the signing of Coentrao and play to Rafaels strengths as both like to attack and would provide the width. Last season Ozil was played on the right hand side sometimes and we know Kagawa can play on the left which leaves Rooney to play in the hole and RVP up top. This attacking line up would be one to be feared and second to only Bayern in my opinion. However we would have to sign a defensive midfielder to sit alongside Carrick and I feel Kondogbia/Fellaini would be a good fit.

Signings needed for this scenario: (Ozil, Coentrao, Kondogbia/Fellaini) Spend = 60-80m

2. We sell Rooney

If this scenario occurs then there is a vacant slot in the number 10 role which would then be filled by Ozil/Kagawa however Ozil would be the preferred choice as they are both the same age however I feel Ozil is currently a much better player. We would play the 4-2-3-1 formation again with Kagawa left and Zaha right but could change and put Kagawa centrally, Ozil right and Nani left.

On the flip side we could play a 4-3-2-1 formation with 3 midfielders sitting behind Ozil and Kagawa allowing the two of them free movement.

Once again though an enforcer would need to be signed so the purchases would be the same as Scenario 1 but the net spend would only be 40-50 mil from the sale of Rooney.

3. Rooney goes and we adapt a 4-3-3 formation.

To begin with this will only be possible if we signed a mobile enforcer and would displace Carricks first team place which would be a questionable decision. Yaya Toure would be perfect for this to work but there's more chance of Leeds winning the premiership next year then that happening. Once again Fellaini would suit this role as he isn't the fastest but he isn't slow either. I haven't seen enough of Kondogbia to see if he would suit this role or not. Luiz Gustavo would have excelled in this role though. The enforcer sits in the middle of the park covering the back 4 and allows the two playmakers either side of him to push up and attack (Ozil/Carrick/Kagawa then in reserves Anderson/Cleverly). In an ideal situation we would also sign a winger for the attack preferably Lamela or Di Maria.

Signings Needed: Ozil, Fellaini, Lamela/Di Maria. Net Spend: 60m

All in all this depends as to whether these Ozil rumours are true which I would take with a pinch of salt but it makes a change from the Rooney debate.

On a side note, let's get behind Moyes and beat the Swans tonight!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ahhh that's certainly a lot of words there, think I predicted the ozil rumors a few weeks ago and look where we are now . simple fact is - we will sign no one this season and the quicker we realize this the better

I think people are panicking too much. City have s manager who was decent in Spain but will need time to adapt. Their signings are decent but there's no one of the quality of yaya or aguero to be scared of. Fernandinho is good, Navas gets homesick going to the shops and I can see him leaving in January, and Jovetic is injury prone. Chelsea haven't signed anyone of note either and haven't solved their two weakest areas, the suspect backline or buying a clinical striker. Also there's Maureen yes they will do well but can he really work with Roman. How long till the wheels come off. Let them write us off they've been doing it for years. We know what we have do. MrE

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Mr E. I admire your post. But I think city have got a few more players in their side that you chose to ignore! Kompany, Silva, nasri, hart, zabaleta?
Also Chelsea have got a very strong midfield, hazard, mata, ramirez, lampard.
The worry is we've seen nothing so far from Moyes to change our system to play a tighter midfield. Also, no transfers to strengthen this area.
I don't think we can ignore the mourinho factor at Chelsea.
We're in for a very tough start and the team has not been strengthened, and the tactics have not changed.
We shall see.

Agree0 Disagree0

If you think Citeh haven't improved your wrong.
Jotevic is a very clever, good player and will do well. Navas will be fine with the whole homesick thing, your clinging on straws here, he's lightning quick and will get plenty of assists, also negrado will score plenty of

To any posters who are traveling to the match tomorrow. I hope you show some class and give Rooney a warm welcome. Whatever internal bullsh1t is going on, he has always given 120% on the pitch when wearing the united shirt, and he's played out of position to help the team when needed. Even if you think it makes sense from a football perspective to sell him (which I clearly do not), I still believe he deserves our respect based on what he's given to the club and the fact that all of the drama has been from the papers and mourinho. We haven't heard from Wayne and haven't heard any wavering from moyes and co. Finally it's the smart thing to do. If u and others boo him he likely forces a transfer to Chelsea and will likely score 20-30 goals and win the PL. if everyone gives him a public backing (genuine or faked) its likely we can resolve the tensions and maybe get our superstar 30+ goals, 12+ asst world beater back to form. He's had down 6-9 month stretches before and always responds. let's give him a surprisingly warm welcome and see if we can't get OUR superstar back to his best. I'm ready for criticism but I hope at least some agree with me.

I'm praying her scores. It'll bring all but the most fervent Rooney haters around to common sense. I'm predicting 3-1. Rvp (from zaha), kagawa (from rvp) and Rooney (from zaha). Expecting big things from zaha on the wing. If we can get him players to aim at it will be devastating.

KG

Very good post and at a good time. For all that's been happening, we don't know the truth. Wayne is far from a saint, but if anyone thinks the boy doesn't love playing football is clearly deluding himself/herself. If we can get behind him today(if he plays), it will help settle things. Don't want the season to start with a negative talking point. I think Wayne will do the job this season. I can't wait for the season to start. Take me home, United road.

Deeps.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post mate. I'm not fussed if Rooney stays or goes but agree he shouldn't get a abuse because 1. Wouldn't like fans reaction to force him out or 2.him to use the fans reaction as an excuse if he wants to go

Agree0 Disagree0

KG, well said, you know my view on Rooney. We must do all we can to keep him. I just wish Moyes and the club will stop being so stubborn, come out and say, he's not asked for a transfer and support our player.
Anyone on here who wants him out or boos him are virtually giving the title to Chelsea. We all know deep down, that if he goes there then we're screwed. Especially that the mythical transfers that Moyes and Woodward have been telling us about are not materialising.
So let's get behind our players, especially Rooney, to show him that he still belongs here, and that will be like signing a new player.

Has anyone else noticed that Valencia has given up the number 7 shirt I wonder if that means a new number 7 is coming in. I hope so

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No don't think anyone else noticed. ya could be onto something there!

Nice one AJH, while we are at it, does anyone have the codes for the Fantasy Football? I don't think anyone has asked this in the past few weeks.

Is this true? I wouldn't be suprised if the Ronaldo was seen in manchester rumours start then.

OMG people will start thinking Ronnie might be coming back now lol 😉

Morning boys. Frustrating summer so far but that hasn't dampened any of my excitement so far today. Let's enjoy the ride.

I think someone mentioned this last week and I'd like to add my plea as well - can we avoid the one line posts during the games? They clog the site up and so many people end up looking silly having posted an emotional outburst after 10 minutes of the game. Let's debate, discuss, dissect the games but enough of the rants mid game. What say you?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Funny that you post about not clogging up the site, yet only 3 hrs previous you post about Valencia giving up the no.7 and a new no.7 coming in. This sort of post has been one of the most frequent over the last few weeks.
Funnier still everyone knows Valencia has wanted to give up the no.7 since Christmas and has nothing to do with new players!

Ed(s) how likely do you think a move for Fellaini is, in all honesty? Up until now it has just seemed like paper talk because of the relationship between him and Moyes, but Martinez is supposedly expecting, or just preparing for, him to leave. I would've thought if we were actually interested we would've just made a bid before his release clause expired and full control of the transfer went to Everton.

Thanks

Pretty happy with my Fantasy PL team now guys, good luck this season.

Weird season. No high priced sure thing players. Lots of value in the 5.5-7 range. But all of the turnover, plus Chelsea have a double game week in week 1 makes it far more complicated. Lots of wild cards going to be used before Christmas. By the way, my team name in the league is ComeOnFeelTheMoyes. So feel free to talk trash during the season. The only thing that can distract me from the torture of this summer is proper football. And it's back!!! Come on united. 21! 21! 21!

I'm Keavys_Clan on there, my daughter before anyone asks :-) I was top 40 last year I think so going for top 20 this time.

QPR have had a bid accepted for Scott Parker. Not sure of the fee but would've guessed no more than 4m. I think he would have provided us with a solid couple of seasons alongside Carrick at defensive midfield, as part of a midfield trio. Ideally we need a conjourer in the middle too, but another sturdy midfielder would've be welcomed as well considering the price.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No just no.

This has to be a joke!?

That is possibly the worst idea I have ever heard! Scott Parker, seriously!
I hope you were joking, otherwise you need to get back on your meds.

I think what he is saying is that a few years ago he would have been a decent signing. He doesn't mean sign him now.

We would of struggled to sign him with Barca, Bayern, Real etc queuing up for his services. oh wait

Jesus thank god your not in charge

Haha, as much as I don't think Parker is for utd I do think he's very underrated, he's a good player imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hughesy, because Bayern, Barca, Real etc were all after Jones, Smalling, Powell. Oh wait.

If we had gone for Parker when he joined Spurs it could have been a good deal for us and I'm sure several regulars would agree as I believe that was the consensus at the time.

Scott Parker.? Christ almighty, I need a drink!

Scot Parker
Are we in the market for a groundsman!
The pundits dream boy, the man that puts a tackle in because his touch is so bad.
He maybe a great pro but never a Manchester United player.
Bet Kloot rates him higher than Cleverley.
Dylan

Agree0 Disagree0

MEF, Jones, Smalling and Powell are all kids, not 33 years old and well past his best! Even at his best he wasnt united quality! Jones is already a better player .

Don't know what you've been smoking but send a bit my way

The beginning of the new season is just over the horizon lads! The transfer window has nearly ended! And sanity will be brought back to the website, unless we lose our first game 4-0 then it'll be the opposite.

I'm looking forward to Swansea as it will be a real test for us and it should determine how much the lads want to succeed. I'm hoping Moyes selects a strong side including the likes of De Gea, Vidic, Carrick, Kagawa, Rooney and RVP. I'll be a little concerned if Giggs starts.

It's a great feeling though isn't it? A new season begins, full of excitement, happiness and rivalry. It feels like Christmas eve!

We just all need to take a step back and be grateful for what we already have. We have a strong side which will soon be improved, a new manager who will bring much more diversity to the side and a few youngsters breaking through.

It's a shame this summer the majority of posts have always been connected to the saying "Looking at the glass half empty". Some fans of other clubs would be having fits reading some of this rabble! We're current champions of England guys, let's support the team and continue the success!

Have a good weekend lads! I know I will!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So you're happy that while city sign fernandinho a superb midfielder, navas who had more assists in la liga than any other player, and throw in jovetic.
While We sign a right back in a position where we're already strong.
Our midfield is a joke. You can dress it anyway u like, be as positive as u want, but we are going to be turned over time after time.
Yes, we are Champions, but in the past, we'd gone out and strengthened when we won the league. This time we've been chasing shadows in the transfer window.
I think we're going to be brought down to earth very soon. Swansea, Chelsea, city, Liverpool, sunderland., how many points do u think we'll get from these matches?

No-name, Fernandinho is nowhere near a 'superb' midfielder, nothing but a squad player. Navas only got 1-2 goals last season and I believe not many assists.

Our midfield is weak, we are addressing that. Moyes has said we are close to signing players and we just need to stay patient.

Agree0 Disagree0

Navas got 1 goal, none in the league
