Well, Nani was great tonight. His first touch when bringing the ball down from the air and when he's one on one with a player is absolutely sublime. Probably on Messi, Ronaldo and maybe Iniesta ahead of him in that respect right now. He's been absolute class for the Euros so far. I can't believe people are suggesting we sell him in favour of Bale, who is barely half the player Nani is. I don't want another raging battle about this, just putting what I've thought of his Euro campaign so far.

Percy

Believable7 Unbelievable8

I like Nani and hope we keep him, he had a good game, but the last two passages of play involving Nani were examples of the frustrating Nani. It seems he is on his way out, just hope we bring in an adequate replacement beforehand.

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree3

Nani wasn't "great" tonight. He wasn't as bad as he was against Germany or Denmark but you didn't see Nani missing an absolute sitter then? Layed on by Ronnie, your Mum could have scored! Still don't let fact get in the way of your observations. Carry on dopey, Nani will leave because SAF has had enough of his inconsistent performances.

Agree5 Disagree3

Percy, it's rediculous to say you don't want a raging battle about something when you write something that is clearly not true. To say bale is barely half as good as nani, is an absolute joke. I also don't want another big battle about this but to say that, is just well...foolish and shows no football sence what so ever.

I do think Nani is a very good player but so is Bale. It's always Nani is amazing and Bale is terrible or the other way round. When really they are both absolutely fantastic players end of!!

Kai

Agree2 Disagree2

I agree with Kai both Nani and Bale are good players. Don't get why people feel the need to slag off players like Bale and Modric, they're all good. Given the choice I would keep Nani over Bale as he is already here and is more versatile

Gav

Agree3 Disagree1

But that's the thing, Bale isn't fantastic, he's above average, that's it. So you're basing his performance tonight on the fact that he had a bad finish? What about his excellent crossing, dribbling, passing and running off the ball? Nobody talks about Ronaldo as inconsistent even though he misses so many sitters! It just seems to be imprinted on peoples brains that he's not good.

Percy

Agree1 Disagree4

Noname

"you didn't see Nani missing an absolute sitter then? Layed on by Ronnie, your Mum could have scored!"

You didn't see Ronaldo's 2 sitters he missed in the last game then? My cat could have scored!

Does that make Ronaldo sh!t then?

Nani had a very good game and has had a good tournament so far, in my book

Gav

Agree3 Disagree3

I only saw about 10 minutes of the game due to work, but that passage of play summed up everything about the guy. Missed a sitter, sublime ball across goal for Ronny, and one of his fabled 'row z' shots at goal. The guy is truly infuriating! How many years has he been with us, and I STILL can't make up my mind about him! :)

StevieK

Agree0 Disagree1

Just for the discussion about missing the sitter. I think anyone can miss a sitter if a keeper makes a great save. For me it was case of great goalkeeping than Nani's fault

But 1 thing was certain if we add Modric/Cabaye to CM then we can play good fluid counter attacking game with his distribution to Kagawa in centre and on the Nani on the wing.

Shaun

Agree1 Disagree0

Ah the joy of entering the Nani debate again. Nani had a decent game last night but I saw nothing to change my mind about his inconsistency. He had a good game up to about 10 minutes before he was taken off during those 10 minutes the irritating error side of Nani came out. He did miss a chance but that can happen.n

There are a few points on this that no one seems to have noted. Portugal don't let Nani anywhere near free kicks or corners so they are not wasted as they are when he plays for us. He does have a tendency to put efforts over the bar or into the first man. It is not the miss that we should note but the effort where instead of getting it over to Ronaldo to score Nani tried a chip. It is that moment in his decision making that is one of the fundamental problems.

Finally Nani was up against a Dutch side that pushed up and left space, and a totally inexperienced left back. The Dutch desperately needed a two goal margin and were all over the place, didn't play as a team. So there has been no change for me , decent game for Nani last night , not a patch on Ronaldo mind you but I still can't see Nani gaining the consistency over a season or changing the decision process in his head.

Red Man

Agree4 Disagree2

Everyone thinks SAF would buy Bale and that would be the end of Nani but don't you think that it's gonna be the end of Evra bcoz for me Bale will never be a Winger his a Roberto Carlos type of player so don't see the need for the comparison of Bale with Nani..Diego-06

Agree2 Disagree0

What Nani does with Portugal is irrelevant. When he plays for United he is hugely frustrating and inconsistent.

And would it kill the fecker to smile every now and then :)

Well it Sir Alex talked about signing 2 or 3 players over the summer. I believe only one has been signed as i feel Powell was only brought in to stop someone else snapping him up. So that means we'll be seeing possibly 2 more first team players with maybe another youngster or two. I think it's fairly obvious which positions were looking at and who seems to be the presses favourites to sign for those positions. But i thought i'd give you my personal favorites for these positions and why.

First off is the LB spot, with Fabio going out on loan and Fryers looking like leaving we find ourselves short of cover. The media thinks it's Leighton Baines were after and although i wouldn't be gutted if he joined i would be dissapointed as i feel there are better options like:

David Alaba; a cracking prospect who is already preforming at a very high level. He is also versitile being able to play in midfield or on the wings.

Marcel Schmelzer; one of my favourite players in the Dortmund team and very underated. Is fantastic at defending while also being able to whip in a great cross, his passing and link up play is very good too.

Emilio Izaguirre; a great player who is already settled to playing in a physical league. Offers great ability on the overlap.

Or maybe an outside bet like Bryan Oviedo, who looks talented in the limited games i've seen him in.

I'd prefer any of these over Baines and all likely to be cheaper(although Alaba might be abit pricey).

Moving onto our midfield. The press is hung up on Modric. I would be happy to see him sign but feel we need someone who has similar qualities but maybe abit more steel.

My first choice is Yohan Cabaye; a workaholic in the middle who loves to tackle and get stuck in but a player with guile to go with the grit. His passing is sublime, and his vision is exceptional. He can create and destroy and is proven in the prem.

Joao Moutinho; a little dynamo of a player, similar to Cabaye in a lot of ways but maybe not quite as gritty. What works agains him is he isn't proven in the Prem.

Nuri Sahin; i'm basing this more on the player i remember from Dortmund who was about the best player in Germany in his last season there.

My outside bet here would be Oscar De Marcos who has looked a real top player in the handful of games i've seen him in and is a player i'll be watching closely over the next season.

Like i said i would be happy with Modric but would prefer one of these guys if i'm honest.

Shappy

Believable6 Unbelievable1

I would love to see either Cabaye or Moutinho here. Modric is likely however. Moutinho has been very impressive I feel, and to be honest I thought we would of signed him while Ronaldo was still here. What I like most about the Portugese is that most of the team is technically gifted. Moutinho would fit in like a glove, as would Veloso.

glad the dutch are out bunch of over rated ego's none of them as good as they think they are. Robben is a disgrace and over rated. Sneijder over rated. Huntelaar over rated. Van persie big game bottler. Wouldn't sign anyone out of that team.

Believable2 Unbelievable3

Glad someone's saying Sneijder's over-rated. Van Persie is not a big game bottler though he just doesn't seem to be the same in a Holland shirt.

Kai

Robben is poison. Sneijder is all hype.

Cban

Agree1 Disagree0

Not for the first time, I've got down on my knees, and given thanks that Robben chose Chelsea instead of us back in the day. Talented, but not as talented as he thinks he is, but most importantly, he's shown himself to have a stinking attitude, that would only have caused serious strife in our dressing room - he probably wouldn't have lasted a season...

Think we are in need of a new full back and after watching that game. I like the look of Joao Perreira. Looked solid defensively against one of the best wide men in the world on his day (Robben) and also was a threat going forward. Loved the little sly pass for Ronaldo's first goal... Surely wouldn't cost a bomb aswell

MOTD fever? lol. joking aside he is a decent right back but we don't really need a right back. I thought Coantrao looked great in that game but having watched him for madrid i know he's actually quite poor. So i think it just goes to show why you can't trust the performances of players at the euro's. Otherwise we could be preparing bids for Arshavin and Bendtner. lol.

We're not really considering selling nani are we? He's class! Today he showed that! Also impressed by coentriao and the right back perria is it? I think both of them are brilliant, I no coentriao only 22-23? And perria 27? But both are great players and would complete our defence, and snidjer is a good a good player but with kagawa we don't need him and I think kagawa will be better than snidjer in a few years! I think we need someone like m'villa or strootmen, I still think we'll get modric but I'd prefere to see m'villa.

Believable4 Unbelievable3

It is really irritating that he can play so well sometimes. I've slated him on countless occasions but if he could play like that more often I would definately give him another chance. But as he's never been able to prove this I'd still rather have Bale.

Kai

Agree2 Disagree0

Still rather have the super duper consistent Bale! haha! Slate Nani for being inconsistent, then you talk about the kick and run merchant that is Bale.

Percy

Agree1 Disagree1

He's not consistant but he's a hell of a lot better then Nani at 22. Can you remember how bad Nani was back then, he was a complete waste of space and apart from the odd thunder bolt, could hardly do a thing right. Yeah Bale is inconsistant but he is only 22! Nani is 26 and still has no football brain, is selfish and gives the ball away more often then does anything good. His crossing is good but he hardly ever does it! And he has no defencive capabilities. Bale can do everything, pass, tackle, shoot, go passed a player, come inside, take free kicks, and has good physical strength. I don't know why there is even a debate as to which is a better player. When Nani has a bad day, he's a total liability, when Bale has one he turns into an average player. SAF and the coaching staff at united could make him one of the best wingers in the world.

Kai

Agree3 Disagree1

Kai, Nani was decent at 23/24 and Bale is 22/23. To be fair they are two different types of winger, Bale is closer to our Valencia in style of play. I would love to see Bale and Valencia played as wing-backs with three centre-backs. I do not think Bale is good enough to be an out and out winger consistently, but he would make a great wing-back IMO.

What I'm hoping for in the left back department is we sign someone like Jetro Willems in the summer and send Fabio on loan. That will allow Evra and Willems to rotate then next summer providing Fabio has a successful loan spell we can sell Evra and allow Fabio and Willems to battle it out for the left back spot. I honestly believe Blackett will end up being a CB who is able to cover the left back position. Personally I still see Evra as being first choice next season even though he needs replaced.

Midfield is obviously the main area we need strengthening, ideally we would sign 2 midfielders in Martinez (ball winner with ability) and someone like Modric who is the playmaker. However I don't see us signing a ball winner even though I think we need one for next season but the season after if everything goes as expected then Tunnicliffe will be there challenging for a midfield spot. I believe one midfielder will be signed and I think it'll be Modric.

Also we have been linked with wingers like Gaitan, Rodriguez etc and addmitedly having a left footed winger is something we need but IMO its not a priority. Ed002 have we actually gone for Markel Susaeta by the way?

So all in all I think we will only see a maximum of 2 more signings 1 central midfielder and one of either a winger or left back.

Rjmanutd {Ed002's Note - Susaeta was an example.}

Believable2 Unbelievable3

Cheers ed. Susaeta is a good player but there are at least 3 Bilbao players I'd prefer.

Rjmanutd

Agree0 Disagree0

Have you watched much of Willems? I have seen a fair bit of him over the past season and although he is a talent he isn't ready for the Premier league yet let alone a team that will be challenging for titles. You say rotate him with Evra, well what if Evra gets a season ending injury in september? Would you be happy with this kid being our only LB for all the Champions league group games and the first half of the season including the important Christmas games? He isn't even upto Evra's standard yet and would likely be a disaster if thrown in at the deepend.
I can see your point about Blackett possibly becoming a CB due to his size but he is so good going forward it would be a waste to have him play CB. I think that maybe he might move inside and become a CB later on in his career when he starts to lose his pace, but in the imediate future i see him staying as a LB(definately at least while he is breaking through into the first team as he can make a few mistakes out wide without it effecting the team too much).

Shappy

Agree2 Disagree0

I've seen Willems probably 5-6 times at club level and in his games for Holland. The way I see it is that Evra has been poor for the last 18-24 months and has been making mistakes all over the place. So if he did get a season ending injury then I wouldn't mind too much about playing Willems even if he was thrown in at the deepend in some games. In a perfect world both Willems and Fabio will be rotated as our left back for the next 10 years. If we end up signing Baines for example it's probably going to cost us 15 million and then in 2-3 years were going to be looking at other left backs to replace him by which time Willems could well be worth 15-20 million himself. Plus the money saved this summer could go towards a top class central midfielder.

I see your point about Blackett as he looks to be a very good prospect at left back although I think he is physical enough to be a CB. If he stays at left back then that makes the rest of the points I've made pretty invalid as if he breaks through and does well, he will probably be our left back along with Fabio for the next 10 years lol.

Just a quick word. Think jao moutinho looks quality. Have always rated the guy and him and veloso seem to be bossing the midfield. I know we won't sign them but those 2 with kagawa as AM would be absolute quality. Think ronaldo is looking class as we all know and miss seeing him tear teams apart week in week out in the premier league. Nani's looking sharp aswell and I think fabio coentrao is a fantastic player. He's dealt with robben easily in the match and seems to be used very sparingly at real. Would love to see him gracing that left flank for years to come. I know willems is a possibility but he looks extremely raw. There is talent there but I would leave the lad for a year or 2 and stay with evra. Yes evra has been a huge liability this year but we all know realistically we aren't gunna sign anyone.

(Half time in Holland v Portugal)

I'm surprised Holland have gone from a pretty defensive lineup (2 defensive holding mids and 1 striker) to such an attacking one with only De Jong protecting the back 4 and the others all being attacking players. I know they needed to win by 2 but they have looked very open against a Portugal side with Ronaldo and Nani going forward. (Btw Nani has been great so far!)

The Holland lineup could have had a lot more balance with the setup I'm about to suggest. It would still leave out Van Bommel and start VDV which were both musts, but would also allow us to have a look at Strootman and not start Huntelaar - who I don't think adds much to their team

_________Back 4_________
____De Jong__Strootman__
Robben____VDV____Sneijder
__________RVP__________

Strootman adds more going forward than V Bommel does as does VDV with Affelay, so this lineup would be stronger in attack than the first 2 games whilst holding a more solid shape at the back compared with tonight's setup

Anyway, here goes the 2nd half....

Gav

Believable3 Unbelievable0

Strootman wasn't given a chance as the bigger personalities probably wouldn't have liked being dropped. This would have kept his value down and it would have also stopped the media from inflating his price. With Van Bommel now at PSV I see little room for Strootman as a regular and I think he will leave in the summer. I am not too sure about these £12m-£14m valuations in the media, I think he will end up costing a fraction of that amount. If reports are true then Asamoah and Isla have cost Juventus a mere £12m.

Sydney!

Agree11 Disagree11

Strootman. So good he failed to make an appearance for a team which lost all three games.

T0MB0Z

Agree11 Disagree10

Has Goetze featured for Germany? Enough said.

Sydney!

Agree12 Disagree12

Enough said? Germany have won every game? Not really a fair comparison...

T0MB0Z

Agree11 Disagree10

Isn't a fair comparison? I am not sure if you noticed yesterday but Germany themselves played a 'must win' game just like Holland have been playing in the past three games. Germany could have went out yesterday just like Holland did so both Holland and Germany were treating their three games as 'must wins' therefore would have played their most established and experienced players. Goetze and Strootman are the future, but not first choice now due to inexperience or the fact that others ahead of them are more experienced. Strootman not playing doesn't mean he isn't good enough, it just means that there are more experienced players ahead of him, players who have been there and done it before. Goetze is a magnificent player but he is yet to feature, doesn't make him a bad player either.

To be fair I am happy Strootman never played in the Euros, if he had scored once his price-tag would have doubled. If we are interested in him enough to make a bid, then the price will be very reasonable and he would not come with a price-tag too big for him to live up to. I think Berbatov would have been a much bigger success at United if he never cost the club £30m. Andy Carroll probably would have been better for Liverpool without his £35m price-tag too. I fear the same could happen with Modric too, if he went for £30m+ I think he could buckle under the pressure at a club like ours or RM.

Sydney!

Agree10 Disagree9

What a load of rubbish. Germany played a must win game (Well - it was a must draw game) and at no point did it look likely that they weren't going to take all three points.

Both players are inexperienced? They have 14 and 11 caps respectively. That's more than players like The Ox, Welbeck, etc who have all at least been given the chance to TRY and affect games (even Willems who was poor at best). The reason? The manager thought they could make perhaps even THE SLIGHTEST bit of difference. Obviously the Dutch manager did not feel the same way about Strootman.

This is the way I look at it. De Jong started every game and rumor has it that City are looking to sell. If those who know Strootman better than I do (the Dutch national coaches and players) believe he is nowhere near the level of De Jong who is not good enoughfor City then I do not believe Strootman is good enough for us.

I know he is young - but you're basing your opinion on what I imagine is no more than the 38 league games he played this season (and tbh I doubt you actually watched any of them).

T0MB0Z

Agree9 Disagree8

Germany COULD have went out yesterday, that is a fact T0MB0Z what ever spin you want to put on it. So clearly they will keep playing their most experienced players which is their strongest team. You clearly never watched the game if you think Germany always looked like taking three points. It was 1.1 up until the 80th minute and Denmark had two very good chances and should have had a penalty before Bender scored the winner.

Like I said both players are less experienced than the players playing ahead of them. Oezil and De Jong/Van Bommel are more experienced than Goetze and Strootman. Again trying a nice bit of spin to suit your argument. Holland were playing a must win game so would obviously keep playing their most experienced players.

A very 'childlike' way of looking at a player's ability, didn't expect anything less from you if I am honest. City are looking to sell because they cannot agree a new deal with De Jong, not because they do not value him. Contract negotiations went on for all of last season, but city will not give in to his demands. Also De Jong and Strootman are different types of players, De Jong is a defensive midfielder who will sit in front of the defenders, Strootman is not. He is a box to box midfielder and with Holland opting to go for a more attacking line-up with VDV they ditched Van Bommel meaning the only suitable player available could have been De Jong. If VDV played then De Jong must play too. Strootman and VDV isn't defensive enough.

Sydney!

Agree8 Disagree8

As always, Syd - there's about as much to your argument as there is Portsmouth's bank balance.

Germany could have gone out? Yes. This is a fact. Have a cookie. Did I suggest otherwise? I do not believe that I did. Using your logic - Manchester United COULD announce the signings of Messi and Ronaldo at three fifteen today. It's not very likely though - as was the case with Germany going out. They had 60% of possession, twice as many shots on target (of a much higher caliber) and did not look much like conceding a second(The challenge on Bendtner would have been a ridiculously harsh penalty).

Both players are less experienced - this is true - but you seem oblivious to several key factors. Ozil did his job - De Jong did not. Hollands goal difference is worse than anybody else's in the tournament other than Ireland's. As a defensive midfielder, De-Jong has to be held accountable for that. If a player is not doing the job he's out there to do you put on somebody who you think can do it. Obviously Bert van Marwijk did not think it possible that Strootman was capable of doing any better. If he can't do any better than De Jong (when he's playing badly) what does that say about his current ability?

Strootman is 22 and Gotze has just turned 20 and so will be more prone to the pressures of a major tournament. He's also only managed around 140 minutes of football for his domestic club in 2012 thanks to a serious injury. These will both have been factors.

Why did you put inverted commas around the word 'childlike'? You're either quoting it (which would seem odd as I never said it) or using the word ironically which would suggest you actually think the opposite? You don't seem to be suggesting that my argument is adult-like, so I can only assume you're just making up quotes again.

You say that Manchester City cannot agree a new deal for a player they want to keep? We all know they can afford it so it stands to reason that he's not in their plans, no? He lost his place while injured at the start of the season and has struggled to get a game since. How good can a player be when Gareth Barry's name is ahead of his on the team sheet?

Different types of player? On paper there are no two players entirely alike, so yes you're right - but Strootman has played as a DM on numerous occasions for PSV and so could easily have replaced De-Jong. Perhaps if you'd seen him play rather than seen him on football manager or FIFA you would know that. Even if we're asserting that Strootman is a more attacking player and is too weak defensively - surely there should have came a point in the second half when they were on the verge of going out of the competition with 0 points when the manager might have fancied throwing him on? He only made one change. IF he thought there was any chance of Strootman having an impact on the result - why would he have not brought him on at SOME POINT.

He's played well generally this tournament and I've seen him play well for Real this season too tbf. He's probably quite underrated by some

Portugal v Holland: Nani inconsistent, Huntelaar average, Sneijder couldn't impose himself, Willems looked reasonable, Van Persie- was he playing? Liked the look of the Portugese number 7 though!

I thought Holland as a team were shocking after they scored, so it's hard to pickout individuals

Does anyone know if there is a chance of us signing nani's twin brother ;-)

I find myself constantly having a go at him and I think this is making things worse when you can see what he is capable of.
Not only is he playing well (which we all know he can do) but his crossing, passing, running and decision making is great and has been in all 3 games.

Head, bang and wall springs to mind

Karllap

This is what happens when you base your game on counter attacking and keeping the ball on the ground as opposed to asking him to hoof it into the box.

With the type of game we hope to play next season with Kagawa, Nani will be the first name on the team sheet after Rooney

Ed, or anyone really, has anyone heard anything on the progress of Matthew Briggs. He was meant to be a good, young, up and coming left back at Fulham and at one point we were given allegid interest (i think that was in January). If he has talent then he wouldn't be a bad buy, especially if he can emulate Smalling in his progress since joining from Fulham...

Another left back we don't hear much of is Dodo, any news on him? I think he is 21 this summer so our first option on him will run out at the end of August. I must admit I have never seen him play, but if he is good and we rate him then we perhaps might see him as Evra's cover and then eventually we will see him complete with Fabio for the number 3 shirt.

Am a Liverpool fan but instead of listening to people with Liverpool biasy involved (I know this isn't exactly going to be non bias replys) , I want to know what your guys opinions of rodgers going to Liverpool is.

You guys will clearly remain a force for the forseeable future but I think you may enter a stage of real despair if you don't get Fergies successor right.

Now if your just going to give an input which is just completely irrelevant like "Liverpool scam you'll probally be facing relegation" - then don't bother replying to this post.

Tom.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

I think he has good ideas and is a bright, up and coming manager. My two concerns would be if I were you would be - 1) if he fails to win over the fans. Everyone saw how Hodgeson was forced out even though Kenny did a worse job. And 2) if the players are technically good enough to play the football he aspires for. Can you see Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam playing slick, free-flowing football? I think he needs to be given a chance and time to make his mark.

Fred

Agree1 Disagree0

To be honest Tom, Rodgers was one of my picks as a possible replacement for SAF as i think his sides have played excellent, free flowing football which i admire. If he can get that going at Liverpool, then you should do well. My only criticism could be his choice of transfer targets and if they are big enough for a club of your size...for example you were rumoured to be in for Joe Allen who, whilst being good, wouldn't be effective enough for a team of our stature and probably not good enough for your Liverpool side at the moment.

RedDevil19

Agree2 Disagree2

He's a good manager, and I think you will do better than your last stinker of a season. However I don't think he's a world class manager and I still think you will finish outside the top 4. And to be honest, players of Sigurdsson and Diames quality are not going to get you back up there.
SqueakyBum

Agree0 Disagree0

Good appointment Tom but there could be a massive problem for you in that he has said he wants to continue the same way of playing like he did at Swansea but the playing staff at yours at the minute would fail in trying to replicate that. I don't see enough good ball players or workers across the forward line to make it work.

Could struggle to get going and he never had a plan b at Swansea so could be an issue.

Jono

Agree0 Disagree0

I personally rate BR highly as a manager. he gets into it in training and is more of a coach than anything. he is very hands on with his players.

he was the best option out there for you, and i hope he is given more than one season as it will take time for liverpool to play his way.

Foozeball

Agree2 Disagree0

I think If he can bring the Swansea style of play with him with some of the players you have then Im sure he will do ok. Some Players like Downing though are very poor and overrated. Also Bellamy should more game time imo. I think 3 solid signings are needed for you though before getting yourselves back on track.

I actually miss us 2 going head to head for the Title.....literally would rather Liverpool win the EPL now than City because of how they have been.

lewis.no.9

Agree0 Disagree3

I think if the club and fans are patient with him, he'll turn out to be a very good manager. I think because his style of football is so different to that of previous managers I wreckon it will take two or three years to be challenging for the premier league again. But i'm a big fan of Rodgers and I would like to think he could get you back into the champions league this season coming or the next.

Kai

Agree1 Disagree0

It depends on what the fans want. Rodgers is a good manager but not an instant fix, it is going to take 2 seasons minimum for the team to fully get used to his style of play. So if you want to be patient and have another few seasons around mid-table then that will be fine but I can see you getting on his back just like Hodgson as he wasn't a big name and he won't last long enough to intergrate his style of play.

fearny

Agree0 Disagree0

Decent manager, but may struggle to attract the top players. Liverpool's squad needs some major surgery and it's going to be a huge project which will take a lot of time and money. One worry a Liverpool fan must have is if KD couldn't get this current bunch playing well, then how could BR motivate these players?

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with Jono - my one reservation would be trying to play the 'Rodgers' way with the players currently at L'pool. Trying that with Downing, Henderson & Carroll all together could backfire IMO. However, if he brings in Gylfi, and perhaps a winger and striker to fit that style then he may have overcome the problem and be able to take the club forward. I do rate BR as a young manager and I certainly respect his attitude and the way he clearly thinks a lot about how the game should be played

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Kai, don't mean to put a dampener on things, but do you seriously see Liverpool anywhere near the top four next season? City, United, Chelsea & Arsenal will make up the top four for the foreseeable future and then you have Spurs and Newcastle. I cannot see Liverpool finishing higher than 6th next season, if they lose Suarez then I think they could finish 8th/9th again. I think you are being a little optimistic and doubt even Tom believes a top four finish is possible. Saying they could challenge for the title in 2-3 year's time is comical. They would need a couple hundred million to spend and they would need players to not be fussed about playing in the UCL. With your PSG, Anzhi's, Malaga's around it's going to be very hard for Liverpool to get the players they want/need.

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree0

I like Rodgers I'll be interested to see how much of the Swansea style of play was his or if lots of it was Martinez's

I personally think older players at your club have too much say on what happens i.e. getting Hodgson booted they just plainly didn't want to play for him.

I think he can do a good job there

Pardoe

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney. I agree with you to a point and would have probably argued with myself if I read what I wrote. I don't see them challenging for the title within the next few years but I could definately see them challenging and getting champions league football. If Rodgers can do what he did at Swansea with no money, I'm thinking, with proper financial backing, patience and support from the Liverpool board he can make them into regular top four finishers again. Not saying they don't need an awful lot of work cos they do but i rate Rodgers so highly i think if anyone can do it he can.

Kai

Agree0 Disagree0

Has had a mixed managerial record although did very well for Swansea. Will be interesting to see if he can make the step up from a team aiming to survive and a team aiming to succeed. Personally, I do not think he will be able to (at least not in the time Liverpool will give him).

oxred

Agree0 Disagree0

@Ed002 I think there's an obvious link between a manager leaving and players following suit. If the reason why you signed for a team is no longer there why not move? Appreciate 'the manager' is only one reason why a player would pick a team to play for however I do regard it as being an important consideration.

Halesini {Ed002's Note - So when SAF retires are you expecting every single Manchester United player to leave? No staff left at the club at all.}

Agree0 Disagree1

When a new manager comes in they're likely going to want to build their own team. To do that you need money. At some clubs that means selling players.

From the other side of things players may not like the way the previous manager was treated, might not like the new manager or might not be able to get the right re-assurances from the new manager.

In this case all of the above may be true with Bale looking at the departure of Modric and wondering how the team will progress having sold one of its best players. He wants champions league football and if Modric were to leave I think their chances of qualifying for the ECL seem slim (especially with Chelsea strengthening).

To be honest, i can't see any of Ba, Hummels, Huntelaar, Gaitan or Thiago come in. Defour only recently joined Porto so is unlikely to leave, Strootman hasn't been sufficiently tested yet i don't think to warrant a move. Cabaye is the one out of that list that I would be happily with.

We need immediate midfield quality, so Modric or Cabaye are the two that spring to mind who would be accessible and would make a big difference. I am also surprised to see you not have a left back on that list, we have to have a back up option with Fabio going out on loan, Fryers leaving for Spurs and Blackett not being quite ready. It won't be an expensive signing like Alba or Baines (both of which are out of reach), its mostl ikely going to be Izaguirre or Oveido based on rumours.

There is also some potential for a young center back to come in, we have been looking at a young center back for the last couple of windows (i.e. Varane). So don't be surprised to see a young center back come in, Papadopolous must head the list after his Euro performances and also his willingness to come, another option is Jires Okore from Nordsjaeland in Denmark.

Just a thought or two on who will get more starts next year. Welbeck and Kagawa will be an interesting battle in terms of who gets more starts. I see that each will get around 20 - 25 starts each this next year with both getting sufficient chances. But i think that we will be surprised with the amount of times that they line up together in the same starting 11. We saw countless times that Welbeck started left, Hernandez up top with Rooney behind him and either Nani or Valencia on the left. I expect this will be a similar thing to what we do next season, however Hernandez will be the one that is dropped to the bench.

The front 4, if we don't have any more additions, will be generally comprised of a combination of these players in the League: Hernandez, Rooney, Welbeck, Young, Valencia, Kagawa and Nani. I don't see Macheda getting close to the EPL squad and Park will play more in Cup games, probably starting on the left of a midfield three.

As for defence, Ferdinand and Evans will start of the campaign i imagine providing Evans fitness is ok. But as Vidic comes back he will replace Evans, and then probably Smalling will come in for Ferdinand in a lot of games. Evra will be the main left back, a new left back will play second fiddle to him, but perhaps Evans will play in the left back spot occasionally. As for the right back spot, Rafael and Jones will alternate, i certainly think against the likes of Bale and good wingers Rafael is superior, he generally does well. Where as Jones is better in some more physical games.

On the balance of things, in the early part of the season, assuming that we don't sign anyone else, we will line up a lot like this:

___________DDG
Rafa__Evans___Ferdinand__Evra
______Carrick__Scholes
Valencia___Kagawa___Welbeck
__________Rooney

Team selection will also be based on fitness, the players on international duty alot over summer are likely to be a bit more jaided, so thats perhaps why I see us using Nani, Young and a few others a bit more sparringly to start with. But as we get into our stride, our strongest line up will change, as Cleverly gets match fit he will be starting more over Scholes. Nani and Young will alternate if not hold down spots more so than Valencia and Welbeck, Hernandez will also get more games, hopefully he should of had a very good rest.

Overall, even with the two additions that we have made, the squad already looks better, and its going to be streamlined even more with more departures and the odd addition. There could be up to 4 or 5 more departures with maybe 2 more first team additions. We have Kagawa for the first team, a central midfielder and a left back for the first team squad are crucial. Powell will be for the future, as will Henriquez and the other odd youngster.

RedDevil19

Believable0 Unbelievable3

What would be the point in having such a technically gifted line up only to have Valencia on the right? I think you are a long, long way off with this one. I think Nani and Young will be the wingers, but I hope Nani and Welbeck are the wingers.

Percy

Agree0 Disagree6

Percy

Your personal preference may mean RedDevil19 is a long, long way off but I think you need to come to terms with the fact that Nani is not going to be a regular in our starting line up!

Valencia was by far our most consistent and effective winger last season and if you disagree with that I would suggest you watch the end of season presentation where he cleaned up on the awards.

He may not be as pleasing on the eye as Nani but we know what we'll get from him, direct, hard work, great team ethic and a better end product more often then Nani!

You may not realise as well, he plays CM for Ecuador now and again so he is more then competent on the ball!

I must say I'm surprised that all the teams that people have suggested on here, Valencia has been left out more often then not!

With Kagawa's through balls sliding in behind the LB for Valencia we can turn defensives so often next season and with Valencia on the right not having to worry about him cutting back and doing a trick or feint allowing the rest of the defence to recover!

Don't get me wrong, I like Nani but he is frustrating, on his day, he is one of the best, but those days come few and far unfortunately!

Ports

Agree3 Disagree0

Valencia offers us a different option, he will give us great width when we need. And i also think that Young and Nani will be the main wingers, but Valencia will have had more of a rest over summer and will be more fresh initially. Nani and Young will be eased into the squad more. I am sure that this will become the main starting 11 after a few weeks when everyone has been eased in:

____________DDG
Rafael___Smalling___Vidic___Evra
________Carrick__Cleverly
Nani________Kagawa_______Young
___________Rooney

The main changes i can see to that line up is if Modric comes in he will partner Carrick, and Jones will get a fair few games at right back.

RedDevil19

Agree2 Disagree2

I think you're right RedDevil19, now, but I would imagine that AF will put some faith into Evans.

Just to back that comment up for some who maybe haven't seen Johnny play at LB - he played there against Spain when we (NI) beat them 3-2 at Windsor a few years back. He was obviously just a kid then, but he had Fernando Torres (in his good old days) in his pocket the whole game - never got a sniff. Probably his best game in a green jersey, so he can play there - obviously a better centre half tho.

I've heard a lot of rumours recently about united having a big summer clear out and feel that I need to bring everyone down to earth. This is not going to happen.

The fact is that we lost our best defender (Vidic) and a key central midfielder (Fletcher) for the whole season as well as Rafael, Cleverley, Anderson and Nani having spent a long time on the sidelines. Kagawa has come and I for one am delighted with this. United fans have been calling for a creative midfielder for ages now and it has happened, Powell will not be sent out on loan because he will be wanted to be deployed as a sub to gain experience and the knowledge he will gain for the likes of Rooney, Scholes and Giggs will be more valuble than championship football.

Henriquez will likely be "one for the future" and we won't see much of him this year.

Pogba has already gone to Juve. A great disappointment as he showed much promise but his heart is not at united.

Will will also not be signing any strikers this season. Welbeck's progress has been admirable and his combination with Rooney is something that should blosoom. Hernandez has suffered from "second season syndrome" this season but I'm sure will play a key role next season. Lewandowski has already been laughed off by his coach and the likes of Huntelaar being fairly weakly linked and Powell looking to get some game time- a further striker looks unlikely. Sir Alex will also likely want to give Macheda a final shot with United, before offloading him.

So to the rumours then. Almost all serious ones have been about United's midfield as we are well stocked with British tallent in defense. We have enough wingers. Nani, Valencia, Young, Giggs and Kagawa (who can also play on the wings), should suffice. The problem is that Scholes and Giggs cannot play regular football, Cleverley and Anderson are injury prone and Fletcher may never play football again let alone to the high standards he has set himself.

So I think it is likely we will sign ONE more central midfielder, to replace Scholes when he retires at the end of next season (something that should have been taken care of last season). If is a forgein player such as Strootman then they may need a season out of the spotlight to integrate into the style of the premiere league.

I think Modric is our main target. We have been closely linked for the last 2 season but never quite finalising the deal and I think the lack of trophies this season will help Sir Alex push through the deal this season. His talents are there for all to see and he should have no problem fitting in. Sir Alex has a few back up plans, however, although I doubt they are "big name signing". Sneider has had an injury stricken season and the last thing Sir Alex needs is another season filled with injuries. Plus, Sneider is getting on and SAF if looking to bring in the "next generation" before he retires.

Asamoah is on his way to Juve and Javi Martinez and Yann Mvilla are both wanted by clubs willing to bid more and Cabaye was bought for only 4mil just 2 years ago. United would have to pay 15-20 mil and that would looks bad that Sir Alex missed Cabaye 2 years ago. Thiago is Barca born and raised and so unlikely to leave so I would think that PSV's Kevin Strootman or Benfica's Nicolas Gaitan are the "Back-up plans" and are likely to be moe like squad players.

Players out:

Pogba and Berbatov are the only real definates but there are a few squad players that might be shipped. Personally I would like to give Anderson 1 more season but there has been strong interest from both Milan clubs and if the right offer is made...

Ji-Sung Park has served united well over the years and is unlikely to go.

A few youngsters may be loaned out and Kuszack has already gone.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

I couldn't agree more. Berbatov is the definite outgoing, Pogba you never can be quite sure with. He may do a u-turn given Juve's signings. Park has been a good servant and will probably stay as he is a useful squad player. James and De Laet have obviously already gone, as has Kuszack. Anderson performed well at the start of the season and deserves a chance, if he flops whilst staying fit for a long period of time then by all means get rid of him - but give him a chance. Nani is going no where. The only other departures are see are from the reserve team, Norwood, Brown, King etc haven't broken through yet and may never so they will be offloaded.

In terms of ins, i expect only one or two more first team players. Modric is the main target i think, and i think that we will get him. Bryan Oveido or Izaguirre will probably be the other addition (or someone like them) who can play well at left back and offer cover. Vidic and Fletcher will be like new signings, as will having a fit Anderson and Cleverly. Macheda will also be given a chance at the club instead of being loaned out. Hopefully he will make it so we have a good fourth choice striker at the club already.

looks like there's a good chance nani will be sold, which im dissapointed with. If he were to be sold i think we should go for a double swoop for bale and modric. i believe nani is better than bale, but id replace nani with someone who is experienced in the premier league than spend 20 odd mil on ppl such as gaitan.

I'd pay max 60mil for modric and bale but i think spurs would want closer to 75

Walcott... 1 year left on his contract and still only 23 and can only get better. His pace for Utd could be lethal

fearny

Believable4 Unbelievable2

But valencia has enough pace and is better

Agree7 Disagree0

I think he is a truly awful football player, if he didn't have pace he wouldn't be a professional footballer. Arsenal are looking for offers according to a few reports and I am not surprised in the slightest. Arguably AW's biggest disappointment IMO. Wouldn't touch him with a bargepole.

Sydney!

They are offered him a new contract and he is holding out to see what RVP does... With 1 year left we could get him cheap and fergie could turn him into a world class player like he has done with Valencia

Wow from the comfort of your lonely sofa ? How can you slate a professional footballer with such condemnation ? Please advise me when you played and who for that made u an expert . Incidentally in periods he has ripped apart barca for 20 minutes , terrorised evra virtually every time he's played him. He's roasted Ashley cole for periods of games . And he has no ability . Glad your nothing to do with the club cause we nurture talent with the best them .DISNEY !

Obertan > Walcott.

Agree2 Disagree2

I think there is still some potential in Walcott. Problem is that if he doesnt start being used in the right way soon then that potential will fade and he will hit his peak as an average player. I wouldnt be overly disappointed if he came to us. As I have said before, play him centrally and he will terrorize most CB pairings.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

Not being bitter towards Arsenal players as I rate AOC and Wilshere highly. I just do not see anything in Walcott to warrant the reputation he got. He is nothing more than a very very poor version of Nani IMO and fifty times more frustrating.

One player who I have really been impressed with but no seems to mention on his Claudio Marchisio for Italy. Looks a really good box-to-box player. Has got quick feet and an eye for a pass, not to mention he has one hell of a shot on him.

In all honesty my first choice would be Yohan Cabaye as he reminds me of Paul Scholes (Obviously not as good as one of the greatest players to ever player the game of football) but his shooting and passing and his tenacity off the ball has really impressed me for Newcastle and he ran both of the games at Euro 2012 for France.

Good shout mate. Personally I think we are targeting the wrong player in Modric as I see Cabaye as a better cheaper option. Great player who would get better playing for us too. Should be our No.1 target.

Halesini

Cabaye or Modric would do for me, Cabaye has imperssed me more than Modric over the season. And i don't think he will be a one season wonder, although just in case his form his temporary, I wouldn't entertain the idea of going over £20 million. Modric I would be inclined to pay a little more for purely because his quality has proved for the last 4 or 5 seasons.

I wouldn't expect more than 1 or 2 more signings. SAF said 2 or 3 signings and to the best of my memory, he is usually true to such statements.

We have Kagawa and Powell. The latter may not have been in his initial plans.

Another midfielder I would think and possibly a striker depending on what happens with Macheda. Alternatively the much talked about LB position.

Just read an article about pogba that he wanted to go juve for first team football but with the news that they have bought asamoah and Isla Aswel as a youngster anyone else think that he could change his mind I can see him making an impact on the first team this year at united.

The fact that juve already have Vidal and marchisio I can't see pogba getting a game.

I want him to stay so maybe I'm being a bit naive about him staying but think its possible tbh

Dwright

Believable3 Unbelievable0

In all fairness to Pogba he's not been given first team opportunities at United. If you were a 19yo chomping at the bit to get first team football, with an agent trying to extract some cash behind the scenes whispering in your ear, then a massive club like Juve came in for year of course you would be interested.

We 'lost' Pogba by not blooding him enough last season. The Scholes return, as much as it was needed for the team as a whole, was clearly a signal to Pogba that he wasn't wanted or wasnt quite ready.

Personally I don't think you can blame the lad for looking to go elsewhere. Nor to be blunt can you blame him for changing his mind if he now looks unlikely to get first team games elsewhere, i.e. the very reason why he was going.

We need to stengthen midfield. If Pogba is good enough we should give him chance to prove him and offer him a contract accordingly.

Halesini

Agree2 Disagree0

@Halesini

Im sorry but Fergie knows best and knows when a player is ready. He knows what the player needs and exactly when the right time to play him. And look at Cleverley and Welbeck they were patient and waited and did what fergie asked and look at them now. Cleverley would have been excellent last season and Welbeck is leading the line for England in a major championship. If he listened to fergie and got sent out on loan for a season, he would come back a better player and be ready for UTD.

I would prefer to sign a DM/ box to box midfielder rather than modric. Weve been lacking one for a long time. Carrick is good but struggles against the top teams. Fletcher may/ may not return and the pogba saga continues to plod along. If no one is signed than really leaves jones as back up DM which at times he has excelled and other times he's been ok ( due to injuries which have seen him have a stop/ start 1st season). That then leaves tunnicliffe, who i rate but he lacks experience but he would add steel to the midfield as he loves to tackle. But if we could sign a DM/ box to box midfielder along with modric or another CM then that would be great, but i cant see that happening without us selling a few players. We need a good squad as well as first team so we need to add quality to improve both. Some Players are living on borrowed time IMO it really will be now or never for them.

"At the end of the day with a little 'spin' you can make things look totally different....

scenario 1) we only finished 2nd on goal difference to a club who have spent £500m+ on assembling a team and we finished well ahead of the other big money spenders Chelsea, it was one of our best points totals EVER, we had by far the worst injury record in the league and the worst one we have ever encountered, our squad is in transition and many of our players are still very young and playing their first season or two at this level, our away record in the PL was brilliant much better than last year when we won....so we can't have been that bad can we?

scenario 2) we finished the season with NO trophies, we got knocked out of the CL in the group stage in the easiest group we have ever been in, we failed to dominate many 'lesser teams', we didn't play much attractive fotball and our defensive record was poor....so it was a terrible season surely?

The doom mongers will always state scenario 2 to be the case whilst the 'red-tinted brigade' will site scenario 1 as being the truth

IMO the truth lies somewhere in the middle. It was an unsuccessful season which we need to improve upon, however, we are already on the way there with all the youngsters who are gathering experience week by week. We already have Kagawa and Powell in the fold. If we can add a good CM, a good LB and one or two more youngsters I think we'll be sorted

Nah I'm just kidding - really like this post! It is somewhere in-between the two. I don't think we can sit back and relax because we lost on goal difference - but you are also right in suggesting that the gloom and doomer's make the situation out to be a lot worse than it is.

Sensible post.

I like it.

Joe

Believable2 Unbelievable2

Gav - For me the season was both exciting and disappointing with an inevitable outcome. The European and CC debacles were not only disappointing but at times embarrassing and highlighted what many supporters knew deep down, if a team was prepared to have a go at us then we were vunerable. The likes of Blackburn, Wigan and Everton proved it later in the season.
The loss of Vidic was massive but don't forget when VDS set his record for not conceding that both Rio and Vidic missed games in that run through injury, I think I am right in saying that Evans was an ever present in that run. Our biggest problem was the loss of midfield players and we ended up relying on the old guard who sadly couldn't quite see us over the line.
There were dubious team selections and tactics that cost us dear, a midfield of Raphael and Park against Blackburn whilst Pogba sat on the bench. The ommission of Scholes at Wigan who were a team in form, the midfield selection for the City away game, Scholes, Giggs and Park with Cleverley not even on the bench. For me the biggest mistake of the season was the tactics late on against Everton, having let them back in at 3-2 we score a 4th and with 6 or 7 minutes to go we have Evra missing an open goal, Everton break and score. We then concede a 4th and in all that time we had Jones warming up, why didn't we shut up shop at 4-2, instead we continued to attack and how costly that proved as Fellani ran us ragged.
I couldn't understand the Berba situation, things seemed to be okay between him and SAF in that there was a mutual agreement that Berba's style didn't suit the way SAF wanted us to play. What followed seemed to be that Berba was frozen out, yet at times we juggled between Welbeck and Chico as both struggled for form and we couldn't hold the ball up, a situation ready made for Berba.
I mentioned the inevitable, well that was that horrible gut feeling that stayed with me that we would blow it. This was highlighted by a conversation I had with a guy at Wigan as we watched Utd arrive minus Scholes and he commented that Scholsey could enjoy an evening at home with his feet up watching us beat Wigan, well that was the polite version. We all know what happened and then the feeling after that game that the title decider for us was Everton at home and so it proved.
Having followed United for over 40 years I have learned that when it seems things can't go wrong they do, losing to Leeds in the FA Cup semi final 2nd replay in 70, the tears of relegation, the tears of losing to Norwich in the Lge Cup SF in 75, we only needed to win at home in the 2nd leg, the forgone conclusion that we would win the 76 cup final against 2nd Div Southampton, which brought about yet another bout of tears. The following season as underdogs we stopped Liverpool winning the treble by beating them at Wembley.
You see, all those years ago I learnt to expect the unexpected with United and the last gasp wins against Sheff Weds and then in 99 against Liverpool in the FA Cup and Bayern highlighted this perfectly. The disbelief on the last day of the season that we just might win it, surely City couldn't blow it against 10 man QPR. Just as it seemed we would win it, so it was snatched away and that last day of the season summed up why I have followed United for over 40 years. You see they have and I am sure they will continue to take me to the highest highs as well as the lowest lows. Having endured the tough times in the 70s and the mediocrity in the 80s, the Fergie era is a privilege, but the memories of the 70s are never far away so I don't get too carried away with it all. Yes at times I feel angry, frustrated, but deep down win lose or draw you just can't beat that feeling of following United.
Apologies for rambling on but it is early on a Sunday and needed to pass the time.

Keanooh

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes Joe I just think it's easy to get carried away as fans but it's important to step back sometimes and really assess how we're doing, answer: not great but not dreadful either!

Good analysis of last season Keanooh! Unfortunately I agree some of our team selections were bizzare, especially Scholes at Wigan, Valencia at City and THAT midfield against Blackburn, oh dear. I don't think Fergie is losing it just that he has got away with bizarre selections and over-rotation in the past whereas this year we didn't get away with it. Hopefully that's one lesson learnt for the 'business end' of next season
