With our boy Carrick gone who gets the arm band.
I'm not one for a captain in goal cause I think the captain needs to be around the pitch getting other players going but since we have to many sheep on the field I'd give it straight to de gea.

Agreed Leahy. Not really spoilt for choice in the captaincy department. Other options are Lukaku or Herrera for me. A i always like my cbs to be captain personally. Position which is perfect for barking orders. Bailly if he ever gets a game. A left field choice would be lindelof but isn’t going to happen. If Alderweireld comes in he would be a candidate for me.

Thanks park
I give you the award of being my new friend.

He wouldn't be my first choice but don't overlook the possibility that matic might get it. He plays every game and seems to be jose's man. Pogba if he grows up, he would either sink or swim.
Toni or smalling if they are going to be starters again next season would get it on seniority.
I agree i'm not a fan of keeper captains but ddg would wear the arm band with pride i'm sure and is certainly worthy.

There seems to be a lot less of the Keane Terry Gerard Vieira type captains around now. The game has changed so much I think Keane would have half our players in tears if he rollicked them like he did Becks Neville butt cole Yorke and co. Could you imagine how the likes of sanchez martial or pogba or shaw would react.

I grew up in an era when the captain was the figure head of the club the team and represented the supporters.

I suppose that still is the case at some clubs but its been a long time since our captain has been a truly inspirational figure at the top of his game making sure everybody is on top of theirs.
What I would give to throw 3 players into or squad like Keane Rio and Neville to uphold standards.

Would the added responsibility for Pogba mature and improve him?

Agree0 Disagree0

18 May 2018 06:50:04
I think it is very telling that we are struggling to identify a captain. Sure, the captain role is not what it is in cricket but when I played they were a strong voice on the pitch, made everyone stick together and told you what was needed, got that extra bit out of you. We lack character and leadership on the pitch and have for a while, it is no good having a captain who can’t communicate in English to the other players, totally wasted armband. The thing is here that someone like Lingard at 25/ 26 should be a candidate but instead he continues with daft poses and doesn’t look like he has matured in his life, people still think he is young.

We could look at Phil Jones but is he a leader, looks quiet when not injured. Don’t mention Smalling. If Herrera held a position then maybe, he gets it, he gets the club as well but doesn’t hold down a place enough and his contract situation doesn’t bode well.

Until sorted it seems like mix and match until the right character comes along, we must think of character in our buys this summer.

Agree2 Disagree1

18 May 2018 08:41:07
No way Pogba should have it, done nothing to deserve it, DDG is the stand out choice for me, other than that we are seriously lacking and like above says Matic is prob the most trusted outfield player to take it.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 May 2018 09:34:49
I think Lukaku has been the stand out player this year and in his first season i feel he gets the club as much, if not more than any other player. He is vocal, he works his ass of every game and he don't care if he assists or scores the goals.
Captain type if you ask me.

Agree3 Disagree0

18 May 2018 12:38:16
Id prefer a centre back or centre midfielder. Strikers should only be focusing on scoring. Its worrying that there's a lack. We had this conversation last year and here we are again. Carrick wasn't the most vocal player and had it on seniority. Now we lack even a senior player who stands out. Of course Fellaini could sign a new deal and take the armband.

I’m going to go out on a limb here, I think England will surprise us at the World Cup. For years we have been disappointing noted even when we had a golden generation who simply didn’t perform. But Southgate, despite the stick he gets, knows what he wants. He has picked players he knows and trusts and I think has created a culture that didn’t exist before. Stories have emerged from England squads of historic club cliques and a paralysing fear for failure but by picking such a young squad I think we might surprise a few.

I don think we’ll win it but I think we will play without fear. We have youth and pace and if the environment and culture is right then we will damage any team in the world. For the first time I can remember I am looking forward to seeing England play.

Believable2 Unbelievable6

17 May 2018 22:39:37
I’ve got the same feeling as well AJH. England are an unknown quantity so could surprise few. Not getting any hopes up but if they can work hard, find a system that works then there is no reason why they cannot go far. But there is a serious lack of quality in midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 May 2018 22:40:43
The defence is awful and the medfield is mediocre, the only position I say could argue to be the best in the tournement is the striker postion with Harry Kane- can’t see us getting past the quarters.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 May 2018 22:45:53
Won't pass the quarters for me.
An average side.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 May 2018 22:51:18
Fair play to Southgate for selecting the squad he has but he’s got a free pass this tournament so why not. We are playing better football now but it’s not effective enough and the defence and mids are dreadful.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 May 2018 23:43:07
He has made some big calls not pandered to egos picked players he trusts and has had under him in tournaments before disgarded senior pros despite reputation. I hope it goes well for him.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 May 2018 01:17:55
I mentioned this months ago, Tony. I think with less expectation, and more of a team rather than a side of big names, they might just surprise. They could hardly do worse than the so-called Golden Generation.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 May 2018 08:42:59
Having 35 defenders in the squad will help defend a 1-0 over panama I guess 😉 don’t like international football at all tbh, the welsh run was great but as we tend not to qualify for them I’ve little interest.

Martial not in the French World Cup squad. Can't see him staying here. This will be a big blow to him, and he'll be looking for first team football.

Has potential, but Jose doesn't like him so it's best to try to recoup some of the money we paid for him.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

17 May 2018 21:53:25
France have incredible strength in depth lacazette, Benzema, Laporte and Coman didn’t make it either. Martial should have made it but I wouldn’t necessarily blame this on Jose. Deschamps is such an incompetent manager and he is the problem here. I think rabiot missed out as well. With that squad France should be winning the World Cup but as long as deschamps is there they won’t.

17 May 2018 22:01:20

2 serious posts in a row. Where's the real Danny, and what have you done with him?

Agree0 Disagree0

18 May 2018 09:10:28
Why is he not making the French squad?
Why is he not making our team?

I think these coaches who have been in and at the top of their profession for years need to start listening to some real experts.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 May 2018 10:02:37
Well, he’s not in our team because Jose brought in Sanchez. Martial was in good form before that, but Jose doesn’t rate him and brought in a new player to directly take his place in the team.

He’s not in the French squad because he hasn’t been playing regular first team football.

It just makes sense to sell the lad if he has already been replaced.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 May 2018 10:42:47
Even if he wqs playing regular football he wouldn't get into that team. Look at lacazette playing regular football and he couldn't make it.

They have Mbappe, Greizmann, Fekir, Dembele, Giroud, Lemar and Thuavin. He hasn't performes to their level and they deserve their place more then him.

Agree2 Disagree0

18 May 2018 12:33:41
Lemar and Dembele have had fairly poor seasons, difference is they have been starting games over the last few months. Prior to signing Sanchez, Martial was on course for his best goal tally for us. He was performing well, but the manager brought in a player to directly replace him in the starting line up, and his opportunities have been restricted since then.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 May 2018 14:04:28
Mendy has not played football all year and is in the squad. So not sure that's the only reason.
Of course France are spoilt with some great options they could but in 2 squads and get both to the 1/ 4 final. Deschamps actually said martial is not in the squad because when he played in recent internationals he has not done as well as other players not because he was not playing regularly for his club. It's hard to argue he is better than who was picked ahead of him really.

The season is over and so it is time for the Manchester United Rumours posters end of season awards.

It has been very competitive this year and the quality of posts has reached new levels with several new posters raising the bar. The oldies continue to impress and as my predictions competition has shown there are at least 200 people regularly reading this stuff.

And so on to the awards.

The Waldorf and Statler Grumpy Old Men award goes to BEAST and NOUCAMP. Beast set the bar high with his 100% record of negativity whilst Stevie has perfected the art of bringing a grumpy sense of realism to the optimism of youth. Top work fellas.

The “we have 24 hours to live let’s enjoy it” award goes to GDS2. He was GDS until he got banned (yes, really) but his eternal optimism is both uplifting and possibly hopelessly optimistic . Let’s be honest, if you’ve never been banned, you’ve never lived. GDS, StevieK (now Noucamp), Fresh, me, to name just a few.

The “I’m new here, how am I doing? ” award goes to Mumbles and Slate. Both have demonstrated fantastic common sense and intelligence with their contributions, long may they continue.

The AJH award for the person who continually talks about himself in the 3rd person and is able to piss off pretty much everyone goes to MAZE. Maze couldn’t be with us tonight but did send a speech through. “Maze would like to say thank you for this award but Maze is a miserable sod and as Maze believes everyone else is an idiot, this award is clearly a mistake and Maze would like you to stick it. Maze is now off to stick Maze’s head up Maze’s posterior.

The award for Where the hell are you is shared between BETTY SWOLLOCKS and HONEY BADGER whose pithy contributions are sadly missed. Runner up is ZEE who needs to come back to this family who care about him.

The award for I have a crush and I don’t care who knows it goes to 666RED, Tris is hot mate so you crack on.

There are lifetime achievement awards for JRED, WELSH RED DEVIL, DEANO, CSM, and of course the fabulous DANNY, who all continue to add massive value to this site.

The final award is the AJH poster of the Year award. This is a tough one as there are so many posters but the purpose of posting is to generate debate, inform, or entertain. With this criteria in mind, the winner is SHAPPY. A young man with a wise head. Top work fella.

We may disagree, we, we may argue, some of us may be idiots (! ), some of us may be wise, but we all ultimately eat the same thing, and that is to marry Kylie. Oops, clearly I meant to see our team back on top. Keep posting everyone and for those of you that read and don’t post, take the plunge, start posting, you can’t do any worse than ken. 😄.

It's weird how the site draws you in, I end up having a quick look how the latest debate is going . People are pretty consistent in their views and whatever the topic you can have a good guess at the direction a post will take before u read it by simply seeing who posted it.
There's a few kinds of posts there's the I disagree with you almost totally posts but IL find some common ground before I say what I really mean, these start with something like you raise some interesting points but .
There's the I was a bit worse for wear when I posted that and I hope it disappears quickly post.
There's the seek friends for back up posts.
Then there's the I'm going to need stats to back this up posts.
Any posts about martial or Jose will split opinion the easiest .

Q. ) Does the impact of a successful season have an impact in terms of the commercial side of the business?

A) If i can answer very simply and candidly. Playing performance doesn't really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business.

Ed woodwards strange answer in his conference call with investors.

Obviously if we get relegated that will have an effect but is he saying there's no real difference in coming second or first in the league next season? Therefore will there be any pressure on jose to improve next season apart from the pressure jose puts on himself.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

17 May 2018 14:35:43
Interesting, taking from what you have written (I didn't listen to the call), then I imagine he is saying that 'style doesn't really matter' - it's a results business and many if not all of the commercial deals we have signed will have clauses contingent on results rather than aesthetics.

That said, it's pretty short term thinking. I have no doubt that if we actually played with style then the commercial side of things will be a lot easier, sponsors would be beating down the door, rather than playing defensive on the pitch and boardroom! Long term eyeballs mean everything, if we keep playing football in a grindy way, then it will have an effect on broadcast ratings, tickets etc. Everything is connected but the financial boys see things in quarters and bonuses, not matches and fun!

Bet he wouldn't say that at a supporters meeting, financials is a different beast of course and investors care about ROI not quality of product!

I am so glad we are closing in on Alex Sandro that will be one position sorted.

Believable4 Unbelievable6

17 May 2018 13:45:18
I'm in two minds with Alex Sandro, he is highly appreciated by many in the media, yet he has looked nothing special when I've seen him play. He has had a poor season in a far slower league then the EPL and hasn't been selected by Brazil for the world cup. With Chelsea flop Felipe Luis selected ahead of him. In fact both the LB's Brazil are taking to the world cup are over 30.

Brazilians have a very mixed record when it comes to settling in the EPL.

So although he has a good reputation, it is far from a forgone conclusion that he would settle and be an improvement. The let full back we signed from Seire A was Darmian.

Agree6 Disagree6

17 May 2018 14:38:47
I haven't watched enough of him either to be honest, but it might be a bit Pogba like again (hope not) - hype from media but when stepping onto English soil seems to be a bit out of their depth!

I did hear the commentator say that Juventus fans were frustrated with how defensive he has been playing in recent months - booing him for passing backwards all the time etc. So probably explains why we are so interested. lol.

Dear Mr Beast,

I've been visiting this site for over four years now and I must admit that your knack of turning debates and discussions into a negative one is astonishing, to say the least.

Please don't get me wrong as I respect your views but don't you find it exhausting being negative all the time? I hope this isn't how you see or perceive life in general. I will really like to hear Mrs Beast's view of your general outlook on life lol.

Anyway, have a great day or should I say have a miserable day? lol.

17 May 2018 15:30:55
It’s part of Beast’s Charm, he used to be pretty balanced but LVG and Jose have driven him over the edge.

Agree2 Disagree3

17 May 2018 16:18:54
Haha I'm well over the edge now - like a Looney Tunes character with the crevasse beneath.

I just take the view that if I can call it as I see it when things are truly bad, then I can be genuinely delighted when things do turn around. Rather than deluding myself that this tripe we see every week is a stepping stone to better things.

Believe it or not I am actually very very happy in life, everything I do I do well because I can honestly critique myself (and Mrs Beast) - life is a joy for the Beast 99% of the time. The only times I am unhappy is when third parties let me down and unfortunately in life you do have to rely on other people from time to time. Alas most people are happy to delude themselves and as a result the people around them tend to suffer. I prefer not to suffer in silence or pretend suffering is progress. The flip side is that those people around me benefit, (unless you happen to disagree with my honest relentless assessment of things - in other words are content with less than perfect) .

I'm casting a bleak shadow around Man Utd because things are bleak - the game we all love is terrible to watch most of the time and our club looks lost to me. But nevermind we might sign Sandro, (I bet most people commenting have just watched him a handful of times) and all will be better.

Im not an England fan firstly
But for me John Joe shelves has been playing good football and he isn't even on standby.
He can pick a forward pass, he gets stuck in, and can't pick a shot from outside the box. Benitez has him playing good football.
Exactly the type of player England are lacking.

Leahy - he is a luxury player: if there's space he can hit the 60 yarder but he lacks movement and doesn't like being closed down- his discipline goes awry- these are comments from newcastle fans who watch him week in / out and got to say the proof is there if you watch. don't think for one minute that england are going to win the tournamant but shelvey ain't the answer imo.

England teams have been picked by the press In years gone by nearly.
Lampard and Gerrard played in effectively the same role for their clubs but the manners teied to fit both in when only 1 should have been playing at any one time for England. Instead they shifted scholes out to the left. Bonkers stuff.
