GDS - I am also disappointed that your deciding not to post anymore. I enjoy reading comments from the regulars and enjoy seeing how they evolve over the course of the season.

I think in recent days we have clashed a little on certain topics simply because you have one view and I have another. Unfortunately at the moment I am not anywhere near your thought process on LVG, 'his philosophy' and his football but that's not to say I will not be proved wrong, hell I would love nothing more than to be proved wrong.

My major problem with the teams performances at the moment are simply that they are mundane and boring and I feel that the manager is not even attempting to address these issues.

I live in Australia and I visit Old Trafford up to five times a year (when possible) and the times I have been this season I have been bored, unimpressed and hacked off watching us. Now my family live in Scotland so my sole reason for visiting Manchester is to watch United and I feel I have been let down this year. On top of that I pay a fortune on flights, tickets, accommodation etc.

On top of that as I work on Eastern time I have to fit my personal and work life around games which begin at 1.30am, 4am or even 6.15am. I go into work shattered and I am not able to fulfil many commitments because of commitment to watching us play week in week out and on umpteen occasions this year I have thought to myself 'Did I really only get 4 hours sleep today to watch this dross'.

Again mate if I have upset you in any way I apologise but you need to understand United is a global brand and everyone will have contrasting views. Hope to see you post again soon.

Nice post JMB and possibly slightly overdue. It's great to have you on. here and I love your passion and input. However you have been a tad touchy lately and keen to jump down GDS's neck at any opportunity. But fair play, quality post and I look forward to debating with you in the coming months.

And, I have lots of friends out in Oz, where are you?

JMB, Goos post

Gds you need to be back posting as there is no point in taking a breka over something we have no control over. Nome of us are involved with the club so it is just a discussion with different opinions.

Come back and we miss your mature posts.

AJH - I am live in Adelaide mate. Nice city and great living environment but I have to admit they are Liverpool mad over here. I really don't think I could come back to live in the UK permanently but like I mentioned earlier the time difference is a killer for watching the games.

JMB, our best friends emigrated to Adelaide about 8 years ago. We did consider doing the same but I didn't quite have the points

Shall we run and lighten the mood?

1. What was the 1st Unted match you went to?
2. What was the most exciting match you went to?
3. Who is the best player you have seen play for United?

Mine are:

1. Fulham, FA Cup, 1979, 1-0 to us with Jimmy Greenhoff scoring. I sat on the bar with my legs through the railings and it snowed. Great memory.
2. I didn't get to the Nou Camp in '99 so mine was the FA Cup semi final in 1983 against Arsenal at Villa Park. We came from behind to win 2-1 with goals from Robbo and Big Norm.
3. I'm sure many of you will go for Ronaldo but for me, it is Eric. Domestically he was incredible, oozing class and attitude. Having lost the title to Leeds on '92 we were stuttering until Eric signed. If it wasn't Eric it would be Ryan Giggs. The youngsters on here won't remember him in his pomp, he was an incredible talent, not as bigger star as Ronaldo but for years he was just bloody good.

AJH - first game was a fourth round FA Cup game at Old Trafford against Walsall in 1998. Ole netted twice as did Andy Cole!

Most exciting game was the CL final in Moscow against Chelsea in 2008. Not the greatest of games but given what was at stake I was always on the edge of my seat and the penalty shoot out was gripping. Cost me a damn fortune but hey it's a memory that will live with me forever.

Most exciting player is a tough one. We have had so many over the past few years. It's tough to see past Ronaldo but when I started to understand football more as I grew up I was always in awe of Paul Scholes so I'm going to say the little red haired man in midfield. What a player.

Agree3 Disagree0

First match was against Ipswich. I think it was 1-0 and Stapleton scored. Not sure of the year, 1984ish. Best match was probably King Erics comeback against Liverpool. Not the best result but a great atmosphere and when Eric celebrated spinning round the goal support i was behind the goal and right in line with him. Best player - well as you can see, a big Robbo fan. Could do with him now.

Agree1 Disagree0

Captain, I did toy with Robbo. It was a shame he played in what was an average United side for so long. An incredible player who would have broken the England caps record if not for his injuries. Really pleased he was there for the title though.

Agree0 Disagree0

1st game Wrexham away 1991 cup winners cup
Most memorable 2012 against Liverpool Rooney with 2 and evra winding up Suarez
Favourite was mark Hughes but best player would have to be Scholes

Agree1 Disagree0

1. 1969/70 can't remember the game and only remember it for George Best running out on to the pitch, I guess the first real match I remember was Derby I think in 72
2. Most exciting, Barcelona 84, we were given no chance against them to pull back a 2 nil deficit and Robson was incredible. Only in the Nou Camp in 99 has anything touched that buzz
3. Best I have seen, Ronaldo. Loved Eric, I particularly loved Eric's performance at Maine Road that I went to when we were 2nil down at half time and city fans pelted us with Turkish Delights after we lost in Europe to Galatasary, Eric conducted a brilliant, exhilarating second half display with Keane scoring the winner. I have seen all since 70 but Ronaldo's debut at OT was just sensational, that day I knew a star had arrived. Giggs could have been but never took the last step to world greatness. Best was great but I only saw him in brief spells after his greatness in the sixties. So Ronaldo for me.

Agree with Scholes Simon. What a player!

Agree0 Disagree0

I can't remember the first or even the best game I went to, but the best player I ever saw was George Best. I still remember this fantastic goal against Sheffield United when we were vying with them for top of the table. I nearly died at that match. The crush outside the ground was intense. On the way in i went down one gate and my scarf went into the other.

Second has to be Dennis Law. His whole persona was amazing. I was in the Stretford End Paddock, and having been called offside for the umpteenth time he walked slowly over to the linesman, sodden jersey hanging out, sleeves extended down to his fingers, and flicked him a V sign. Bobby Charlton wasn't bad either.

I'm sorry to say I had a period between moving to the US in the early 80s and the advent of US TV coverage when I hardly saw a game.

Now I get to watch every game and because i get back to the UK more often, go to a few more matches.

Agree0 Disagree0

Leicester City at Home 4-0 win Sparkys last home game before he left for Barcelona he scored a hatrick.
Got two really 3 all at home to Barcelona Lee Sharpe flick class! Blackburn at home to pick up first title in years.

First game: Utd v Villa Old Trafford 1957. 1-1. Most exciting game? So many !!! One that sticks in the memory is V Sunderland (1962/3 ?) 3-1 down two minutes to go . Law and Charlton make it 3-3 ! Go to Roker 2-2, go to Hillsborough (neutral ground 5-0 to us !!) Best player - BEST !! One of the greatest players of all time. Could that be said of outstanding Cantona, Scholes or Robson?

First match was against Millwall at the old Den in 89. I was with my uncle, who was a Millwall fan, so I had to sit with the Millwall fans. I had my United top on under my coat. I was 8 at the time and my uncle thought he could turn me from United to a Millwall fan lol. He had no chance.
The game wasn't great. It finished 0-0.

1. Nov '77 - Norwich at home. Humdrum 1-0 victory that wouldn't have looked out of place this season :) Stuart Pearson scored, and became my instant idol. Remember hanging around outside OT the day before, and players would just stroll in and out of the ground signing autographs. Coppell, Hill, Greenhoff, Mcilroy. Loved them all
2. Nou Camp '99, without a shadow of a doubt. Like Planes Trains & Automobiles to get there, but worth it in the end. Got to drink with Robbo, Bestie and a few others that night as a wee bonus. '79 FA Cup final was an honourable second.
3.Too young for Georgie. Loved Coppell and Hill on the wings when I was a kid, but the most complete footballer I've ever had the privilege to see ever, never mind in a red shirt, was Paul Scholes without a shadow of a doubt. You only have to ask the likes of Zidane and Xavi what they thought of him.

MrE - Just want to say thanks for pointing me in the direction of that Greg Ian Johnson article, very interesting. It actually makes me think maybe I am being a little too impatient, however the flip side does make me think that it's asking for a hell of a lot of faith in guy that is so unlikeable and unprepared to indicate in a succinct manner what he is aiming to achieve.

The P word is all well and good, and long term plans should trump short termism, however my personal approach to life is look for evidence - it does smell a bit too much of wishful thinking rather than structured plan, but I hope to be proven a short-sighted mug on this issue.

I read the article as well. Brilliantly written and offers a different perspective. It shows us there is a method behind all the madness that we think exists at the club right now. We must be prepared to wait patiently.

Agree1 Disagree0

Yes, that is an interesting article.

Under Ferguson, we were a great domestic team but were somewhat disappointing in Europe. If we want to win the Champions League again we need to be able to play a different sort of football. So, if LVG's role is to rejig the club so that the next manager has the sort of players and club structure to compete consistently at the highest European levels, then so be it.

I realize I might be treading on thin ice here, but the change brings to mind one of the issues raised in Soccernomics. The English game has been dominated by the working class both on the field and in management, with well educated players often being ridiculed. The inability to have a conversation with most players was evident and in stark contrast to foreign players like Cruyff who spoke multiple languages. In this respect we are perhaps looking at a paradigm shift which is more dramatic than we have imagined, simply because SAF's regime was utterly ingrained into the United DNA.

It may be hard to watch, but the article does make an implied case for patience. It could easily take another 2 years to complete the transition. Hopefully we can qualify for the ECL in the meantime, because that will help us acquire the quality of players we need.

No worries mate, just thought another view was needed and he'd put it better than I could.

I appreciate the frustration, I just think that the job was far bigger than we realise. Its already chewed up one decent manager in Moyes and none of us want to see a return to the 70s sacking manager after manager after seeing them crumble in the dugout.

The club needs restructuring and will take time. Is he the right man? Only time will tell. But it needs more than 12 months.

Greg's articles are usually worth a read.

Manchester United shouldn't really make any new signings until we are absolutely sure which formation we would want to play. Different players suit different formations. And we have made a few signings trying to change the role of players which has usually failed(apart from Young).

Per say,
Moyes signed Fellaini, a player who was looked upon by Chelsea and Arsenal, and was in tremendous form for Everton the previous season. We bought an attacking midfielder and wanted him to play as defensive midfielder. It was terrible to see him play there, and thanks for LVG he's back in to play at a position he knows.

Mata, why the hell did we sign him, when Kagawa can't play at no. 10, how does having a third player to compete for the position work? He's been played on wings, midfield, left side of diamond, everywhere. Another time we tried to convert.

Di Maria, we all know he was a good player at the left wing, and somehow Ancelotti worked wonders and made him play on in a 4-3-3 and he was superb for them, we sign him and play him as a striker, a no. 10 and a winger. If we signed him for so much and did not want to build the team around him, it was a stupid signing. I would rather have had Vidal for that money. Or pogba.

Herrera, he too played as no. 10 last season for Bilbao and we signed him to play as a midfield 2, as he was better defensively than Kroos or Fabregas are, if he was considered lightweight to play in a midfield, why sign him, or maybe LVG thought he'd play a 5 man defense, with him in midfield.

Falcao, Falcao's been unlucky, can't say much. Injuries can end careers.

Blind, I think we have signed another Cleverley here, but with the added features of playing in a variety of positions and having a hell of a left foot. He passes sideways and backwards, isn't quick on his foot, not physical, don't really know what he offers to the team, he's average at best. I'd rather play Carrick there, the guy can play some brilliant long balls, Blind is a benchwarmer nothing more.

We can't really sign players unless we absolutely know what formations we are going to play.
Reus won't work in a diamond formation. Same for Depay.
Pjanic in a midfield can't play without a player like Matic.
De Bruyne would be a bad signing if he's forced to play on the wing to accomodate Rooney.
Maybe pogba or vidal could play anywhere in midfield, they are flexible.
Half of them aren't, De Bruyne fared averagely with chelsea when he was deployed on the wing, but has been massive for Wolfsburg as a number 10.

The targets need to improve big time. But the formation we want to play is absolutely essential.

Believable3 Unbelievable6

There's a lot I agree with in there but I don't accept that Blind is another Cleverley nor that he is averaged. He is not sexy but he does the hard graft. I think he's great but he will always be under appreciated, just like Carrick is/was

Agree6 Disagree1

Top post Rohan, couldn't agree more.

Agree1 Disagree1

Blind was a stop-gap. he's miles better than cleverley, I got a bit emotional there. Look at the impact Xabi Alonso has had. And look at Blind. Blind is hardly an upgrade on what we had. And we say Carrick is underappreciated. But seriously he was tore apart against Barcelona. We signed an all round player in Herrera and we won't use him. We let Pogba go, for whatever reasons. We are letting Pereira go as of now. Our midfield needed Vidal or Pogba or Pjanic or someone who could either be very solid defensively or a very good passer. Play a midfield of Pjanic and Pogba for a game and see how beautiful the football goes then on.
Even Powell in the early stage of his career was forced to play back in midfield.
I can't understand why we buy players for a position and try to play him in another.
We have misued Rooney for so many seasons now. Another club like Man City or Liverpool would have put him as a striker.
Rooney is always played in midfield or wing because we sign players like Mata and kagawa and di maria who need to be accommodated and hence Rooney needs to play DM.

good post and while I agree with a lot of your post I disagree on some of your assesments, however the most succcessful teams are teams that elvolve over time and replace players when needed like for like within their given system / style of play. Under normal circumsyances LVG preffers a 433 but he is very precise in his thoughts of what type of player and what qualities a player needs to fulfill any of the positions within his 433. He does not think he can play 433 with his squad as it is because he believes that nobody has all the rightr attributes to play key positions and that his squad is not of the correct balance to play that system just yet. for example he has 3 main strikers on the books costing a fortune and in that system only 1 can play so that can't happen.
As a result he is trying to get the results with constant tinkering which at first was down to a serious injury list but now appears to be just to keep certain key players in the side at the expense of style, I believe we will secure top 4 and maybe win the cup and if he remains in charge will buy the players he wants to fit the system he wants to play.
LVG is doing a decent job in thinning the squad down he will take some more major clearance decisions this summer with some of the likes of Falcao rvp jones smalling evans rafael mata nani valencia fellanai being possible exits.
A world cup summer hampered our summer trading last year, he had only 5 weeks to look at and judge the players on the books, he is trying to bulid a new team it takes time once its settled it will improve but he needs a couple of key players to play his preferred system until then it will be results over style.
GDS, I hope we see you back on here contributing real soon, without your positivity the doom mongrels will have a field day .)

Rohanarora8 - Blind is much better with ball retention than Herrera baring in mind this is very important to LvG and the way he wants us to play. He reads the game incredibly well, second to only Carrick in our entire squad. He's one of our most technical players, we know he can pass, shoot and score. While he may lack a bit of strength and pace for the PL he's still miles and miles better than Cleverley.

He passes sideways and backwards because he's been told to move the ball on quickly, while there is no obvious forward pass (baring in mind how static our forwards are and more advanced midfielders, especially when playing without width). It amazes me how you can say a player that has won MOTM a few times, controlled the tempo of games and even scored a couple of important goals yet you say he's just another Cleverley. Have a word with yourself!

Underrated player, one of our rare consistent performers this season. His talent would be a lot easier to see if he was in a team with energetic players that have been told to interchange/make runs as soon as we get possession by the manager.

Sad to see GDS is taking a break, when is often a sane voice in a sea of chaos and panic.

I often agree with most posters and often disagree with most posters, but it does seem people are creating camps and if anyone dares to disagree with them then they are shouted down and seen as the opposition. As Jimmy Bullard demonstrated recently, people have different ideas of what banter is. Surely we can debate the issues without it getting personal and insulting. KLOOT appears to have retired so the real abuse has stopped but it has been a bit childish lately. I shall continue to give my opinion, try and reign in my sarcasm, and stand up for those who are getting a hard time. Interestingly, I have pushed back for both GDS and Beast in recent months, I don't care what your opinion is, if you are voicing it politely then I want to hear it.

I also worry how many readers this site has who don't post for fear of being shouted down. I'd like to hear from everyone who reads

Personally delighted to hear about the potential De Jong deal in the summer on a free. We are going to have a massive spend in the summer but also need to bulk up the squad with sensible signings like these. We would have two good defensive midfielders in the squad in De Jong and Blind that are effective in what they do.

I hope it happens.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

I hope not fresh there are better younger players out there if you beleive the papers we are going to sign all dutch players if juventus want rid of vidal would l8ve to see a midfield of vidal herrera and di maria

Even I'm a bit of a fan of De Jong myself, although he would most certainly be a squad player at best IMO.
Would you really start him a midfield when we're up against Burnley at home. Unlikely.
He would be a massive addition to the side in Europe though in a 3 man midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

Do not mind him as a squad player but we do not want a lot of mediocre players cooming towards the end of there careires as a short term fix when we could buy better players that are going to take us to the next level for years to come

I find it really amusing that a few posters actually believe that the likes of Herrera/Shaw were not really LVG signings and are not favoured by him because they are sort of indirectly DM's signings as the foundations for those were laid down in DM's reign.

Imagine when DM can decide against signing the likes of Strootman/Garay, who were believed to be scouted by Sir Alex, does anyone really believe that as arrogant & stubborn as LVG is, he will sign the players he does not really want? He can simply have said "no" to those deals, especially with the amount of money the board were willing to spend, he did not have any obligations to complete those deals and could have easily looked elsewhere.

The reality is LVG would have had a look and seen the LB and CM as areas in immediate need of strengthening and would have assessed the players qualities before giving the go ahead. With his arrogance it is criminal to even assume he would just sign players based on someone's recommendation.

And by the way Fellaini is an actual DM signing and LVG seems to be favouring him to break down teams nowadays. Isn't it odd? LVG would play anyone who he feels suits his system or does a job for him, simple as that.

No, but I am going to have some time away from the site, I support United because of my love for the club, I try and see the positive side of things and always try and be optimistic, I appreciate that not all clubs can be hugely successful and also that sometimes things can take time. I speak to friends and other fans at the game and they have the same opinion as me, then I come on here and there is so much negativity, I've never seen anything like it.

We are in the quarter finals of the cup and 3rd in the league, that for me was the ceiling this season and coming on here depresses the life out of me.

So speak soon guys and keep well everyone.

GDS2

I understand how you feel. Right now I am in the Far East about to go out for the evening and for the last couple of weeks tried to find a wifi connection to check in just to answer some of the negative spoilt stuff I read on here. The only thing I recommend is to keep going with your opinion, don't let them snuff your opinion out and don't let them win by forcing you off the site.

Agree4 Disagree5

I enjoy your posts GDS2, but I appreciate that a break can sometimes be a good thing - I came back from mine feeling better than ever.

The problem regulars have is the site is full of people who come on everyday, every few days, just for games or just very occasionally. I am being called repetitive now, but I get wound up having addressed a point (quite well in my eyes), only for somebody to completely disregard it the next day (or even next post) and a whole thread materialises despite the topic being covered at length by several of us the day before. So I bang on about what I said before, making it seem I can't give it a rest, but really it's because what is being said by the OP is so similar to what has been said before by others and wrong in my eyes.

Its also easy for somebody to just pick one tiny point about your post and then get hammered on that which disregards 90% of the rest of the point you were making. For the record I agree with you about Herrera, he is good but he isn't great. He is the best we have, but our midfield is woefully behind our rivals - we need better than Herrera if we are to dominate European football long term imo, but he should be used now without a doubt.

I've decided to scale back my comments now, otherwise they just get lost and you only end up winding up the regulars with repetitiveness (they are the ones who I'm most bothered about).

Hope you keep posting mate, we need counter balances on here.

Red Man, the irony in that post is delicious :) GDS, bit of advice, mate, from an old farther. Suck it up, dust yourself down, and stand your ground for what you believe in. They're only words.

I sometimes wonder, if all of us were having a drink in the pub, talking about Utd, we would never resort to all this bitchiness and name-calling. We'd be having a laugh, even if we disagreed with each other. Why should it be any different on here?

Agree3 Disagree2

19 Feb 2015 12:34:41
Beast,

The whole Herrera thing got a bit out of hand, I do feel he is like the Kagawa figure from last year, we aren't playing well and people think he should be playing, so anybody who says anything negative about him is totally wrong. Herrera should be playing now, he is the best we have, but I think we can and will get better than him in time.

Stevie,

I think generally I come on here in a good mood and go off here feeling annoyed, yesterday morning I posted a joke with a wink that was clearly a joke to calm things down and it was taken 100% seriously and started a big argument and people bitching, I appreciate it is difficult to get a joke across via text.

I think that is where the problem arises that you mention, it is not the same as a pub because it is difficult to tell when people are being a bit light hearted.

Maybe I am being hasty saying I will stop posting, I do enjoy this site and it is like a little family at times, I just wonder exactly what needs to happen for people to be happy, at the moment I get the feeling if we won the Fa cup final somebody would come on and say 'but Blind misplaced a pass in the 12th minute and why was Herrera not on from the start, LVG hasn't got a clue!' and that is frustrating.

I am not bothered about a bit of stick from an anonymous poster on here, it is more just the whole negative atmosphere that makes me want to not bother.

Interesting your irony point, I was chased and harried last year for my views and you were one of them, additionally I had someoneelse telling me I had a "syndrome" and directly told to get off the site so I understand where GDS is. I hope he continues because I respect everyone's opinions but can and do disagree.

I think in answer to your point I think it is different to the pub because we are all anonymous and in the pub your mates would laugh and you would move on. Maybe we should have our first names as part of our tags so it feels more like you are addressing a person rather than an adversary keyboard warrior.

Or we could all only post when we're having a few beers :)

It's not even being in the pub 'with friends', Red Man. I guarantee if everyone on this site were to meet up and discuss these same matters in a pub over a pint, everything would be perfectly civil. Loud and opinionated, but civil. I do like the idea of first names being used, rather than 'handles'. To use my old CB radio jargon.

Hello guys, it has been some time since I last posted. I have been frequently visiting the site and enjoy the other posts, although recently there seems to be a bit too much negativity going on regarding the team and LVG, irrespective of our recent run of games and league position.

Yes, everyone knows and agrees that the football on display has been pretty poor. But, you have to give credit where its due. The team has not performed to its full potential whatever the reason but, we have been on a good run of 1 loss in 18 which is pretty decent given our performances this season.

I have also seen a few posters slating some of the results as being lucky and not crediting the fighting spirit of the team which is a little disappointing. We have always ridden our luck even under the legendary Sir Alex - remember "fergie time" and the amount of late goals we scored and snatched victories out of nowhere. I do agree we have not been as tenacious as we used to be under Sir Alex but still we are showing some spirit to get back in games which is important.

Most also argue about the fact that the teams around us have been in poor form and has contributed to our current league position and yes that is true but, that is part of the Premier League nowadays and the league has become more competitive and there are no easy games anymore.

Rather than crediting our results to other teams poor form or luck, we should rather appreciate our players for sticking together and getting the results and hope for better performances in the future.

The team still has a lot of work to do and once all our issues are sorted out hopefully we all get to see the fast, free flowing, attacking football that everyone craves for.
