Good evening guys, a lot of people are suggesting the Spurs game is a useful barometer to assess Ole and judge our recent improvement but I think tomorrow's game is a more useful yardstick. I hope the players don't fall into the same trap as some of our supporters thinking we only have to turn up to win tomorrow night. This kind of attitude has blighted our season and saw Mourinho transform from the Special One into the Demonic One. This kind of Jekyll and Hyde attitude drove him to distraction with suggestions some of our players were more interested in haircuts and Istagram posts than rolling up their sleeves and scarifying themselves for points.

Make no mistake Spurs are a very good team. Even the best sides can get turned over at Wembley and on their day Spurs are up there with the very best. A win won't mean anything unless it's accompanied with a run of results against the lower placed teams and a defeat won't be the end of the world if we continue to win the games we should. I'm looking for progress in the Spurs game. Can we go there and play well? Can we keep the ball? Can we create chances? Can we be organised and disciplined defensively and cut out the silly unnecessary mistakes?

Newcastle is perhaps a better game to judge our current situation. It's a game we are expected to win but they will provide a tricky opponent. The crowd will make it a charged and hostile atmosphere. Rafa has them well organised and they have experienced a mini resurgence of late. In Rondon they have an inform striker capable of bullying and unsettling our defence. I expect a battle tomorrow night. We will have to match their work rate and endeavour and earn the right to play. We have struggled in similar away games where the attitude of some of our players has been called into question. Tomorrow is a serious examination and will tell us a lot about the mentality and attitude of our team. If we see a professional, hardworking display, where everybody roles their sleeves up and fights for one another then I think we're entitled to think we've turned a corner irrespective of the Spurs result. If we see another flakey, indisciplined performance with players only interested in attacking and showcasing their own individual talent then any talk of a revival will evaporate no sooner than it materialised.

Ole can only do so much in holding those grey skies at bay. The players must show they have the personality to back up their talent and show us all they have what it takes to keep on winning.

Just saw a post elsewhere that said all of the top 6 teams have gone W3 L0 against Cardiff, Huddersfield and Bournmoufh. So we are matching them but no more as yet.

We have done what needs to be done, beat the lower teams comfortably. That puts us in a position to challenge for the top four and above.
I agree Newcastle will be an interesting game. I am looking forward to the challenge though. Whereas previously I would have viewed this fixture as a possible landmine.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 13:20:33
I expect us to go to Newcastle tomorrow and get 3 points. It won't be as straight forward as our first three games but I think we'll have too much for them. The intriguing game coming up though is Spurs at Wembley.

This is a title shot for Ole. A free swing at the man that the club want to be the permanent manager come June. If Ole can go to Wembley and beat Pochettino''s Spurs and put a good run together then I can't see anyone else in the job in the summer.

United have put themselves in a stupid position with the statements regarding the future appointment of our manager. If Pochettino is the main target, why would he commit to us without knowing what Ole could do for the rest of the season. Are we going to remove a fan favourite at the helm to bring in an outsider? Maybe OGS isn't the long term solution but if he starts climbing the table and the style of football and results continue to improve then the United board are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

2019 is going to be eventful! Happy new years to everyone and all the eds!

Apparently there's a 5 man shortlist for the job.

Poch, Zidane, Blanc, OGS and Marco Rose.

Id discount Zidane and Blanc straight away. Zidane would probably be better suited to a director of football job. Blancs not been on a management for a bit and wasn't that impressive. Poch still has question marks over the mental side of the game. It concerns me that spurs always crumble under pressure. Just this week they go second and people talk about a title challenge and they lose the next game. That leaves OGS who's doing a good job but hasn't had a big test yet and Rose who's an unknown factor and a name the majority haven't heard of.

We have rushed the last 3 appointments all have failed to deliver and not been given time.

We need to make sure the next appointment is the correct one.

If ole can get us top 4 while playing the brand of football we are seeing and get a dof in that can sort the other mess out then he should be given the job.

To many times now we have gone with a manager with a cv give it ole and make sure the dof can sort the recruitment out.

Not felt like this about watching us play for the b3st part of 5 years

There are going to be games where we lose but you won't see us change the way we play under ole.

Agree5 Disagree1

01 Jan 2019 15:41:23
Poch doesn't have the luxury of serious quality players for rotation especially during this festive period.
whereas, he would get 2 quality players at almost every position at Utd.

Agree1 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 15:46:05
Thereā€™s a great feel good factor right now but OGSā€™s management experience is sparse, certainly at the highest level. Heā€™s a legend but that doesnā€™t mean we should let sentiment guide us, nice as it may be.

Iā€™m not impressed with the shortlist, I think Poch is the stand out candidate right now. However, despite my reservations, Ole has a chance to show what he can do so who knows? If the players respond to him and start to consistently play to their potential, scoring goals, playing great football, and climbing the table, then it would be a brave man to ditch him for someone else.

Agree2 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 16:03:09
I think the club have done the right thing by taking their time with the appointment. The key for ole was to get the players enjoying their football again. Get the players out there expressing themselves and entertaining the fans. I can hardly remember this much of a buzz around the club since Fergie left.

Although I love ole and think he has done great, I do doubt he has what it takes to take the job permanently. I honestly feel the brains and the puppet master is Phelan. I wasnā€™t particularly enthused about ole until I heard Phelan was joining. He is united through and through and has a wealth of experience that we have missed for years. Moyes May still be in the job if he retained him and meulensteen.

I am firmly behind the idea of Poch. I think we have to resist being a prisoner of the moment and wait until we come up against the other top 6 teams. Poch is one of the best managers in the league and has overachieved hugely with spurs. He has a great team but lacks that depth and funds to compete on a level playing field with the likes of city and Liverpool. He is a great man manager, has champions league experience and he promotes an entertaining and high energy brand of football. I think we would regret not hiring him.

Too often as united fans we are blinded by sentimentality. Thatā€™s what separates us from the Reals of the world who are ruthless in their appointments. Love ole but we would be silly not to go for Poch in the summer.

Agree3 Disagree2

01 Jan 2019 16:08:42
We already have the right manager, give Ole the job i'd say, give him 2,3 year contract with an option to 5 and we will get back to the top sooner rather than later, sometimes you just know when something is right and OLE has clicked right away, he knows what it means to represent the badge, he knows the culture, history, tradition and philosophy of the club, you guys want Zidane? he comes from Madrid, another one who will think he is bigger than the club, you want Poch? he wants Madrid first, Latin american players and managers think Real Madrid and Barcelona are the greatest clubs ever and in Madrids case justified.

Agree2 Disagree3

01 Jan 2019 16:11:50
But that's my point Bolger. There was no need to make definitive statements like "OGS is only our interim manager while we look for our next permanent manager". I'm all for doing their due diligence but they've given themselves stupid obstacles to overcome. Plus Ole came out in the first press conference saying he'd like the job. It's a mess.

It makes the whole process ten times harder. If the board wanted a new manager, then just let Carrick have it until the end of the season with say Mick Phelan coming in to help. By giving Ole a chance they've seriously given themselves a headache they didn't need.

I'm really enjoying the football but I'm incredibly apprehensive about the way the board will handle this transition.

Agree0 Disagree1

01 Jan 2019 16:18:10
There will be several candidates. If we can't get into the top 4 and win a cup OGS may be given the job but anything short of that and i'm sure the club will press on with appointing a new manager.

Personally i'm not even thinking about the summer i'm only looking at the next 5 months. 100% behind ole and the players.
He is getting much more from rash martial pogba in particular.
The longer we can ride this wave of optimism and feel good factor the better.
Lets see if we can make up the gap and get top 4 and worry about who takes over for next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 16:25:15
What else is OGS going to say when asked if heā€™d like the job. Of course he would! We all would!

Agree1 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 16:30:28
I might be wrong but I seem to recall that to be interim manager for any length of time they have to have the badges and Carrick doesnā€™t. The fact they brought Ole in says they are giving themselves time. I said this before but appointing OGS on a permanent basis would be a massive risk and I donā€™t think the club can afford another mistake.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 16:32:45
I keep saying that the next appointment by Utd must be the DoF or Technical Director as the role now seems to be mentioned. No point getting a new Head Coach until we have the right structure above.

The TD can play a major role in appointing the Head Coach. Perhaps if it is done this way OGS might be a serious candidate if results and performances go well.

Just glad we have an air of positivity around the club now.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 18:49:31
My insecurities are that Ole is just what the players needed in the short term. He does well enough to earn himself the job permanently but isn't the nan to move the club forward.

Stick or twist?

Agree1 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 19:10:55
I don't know how any one could give OGS the job permanently after 3 performances against some lowly sides.

In all honesty, it was an iffy appointment. Feels like just another PR stunt where Woodward is trying to distract from the underlying issues at the club.

I'm really enjoying the performances so far under OGS, however I'm not allowing myself to be convinced that this is the absolute way forward. OGS has a way to go before he can be considered for the full time position, if he is even being considered right now which I highly doubt.

Firstly, they need to appoint the right DOF and then make sure that they get the right manager that can work within that structure. I'd imagine the No.1 choice will be Poch but who knows how that will turn out In the next couple of months.

All I feel is that they have to clean up their mess and do it quick. Therefore, I imagine that OGS will not be in the running, presuming they sort out it out ASAP.

If OGS does get the job full time, it will only point to me that Ed and the board have once again failed to be decisive enough and get their intended target.

Agree0 Disagree4

{Ed0333's Note - maybe youā€™re intended target doesnā€™t want the United job? Bloody hell youre arrogance is off the chart. You have no define right to any player or coach in world football. As for OGS he beaten sides Jose probably would have lost too. Thereā€™s no doubt heā€™s bought the feel good factor back and to boot he seems like a thoroughly decent chap. I really hope he gets the job full time.

01 Jan 2019 19:52:32
I genuinely don't think we have a chance at poch. I'm with ed, I don't think utd are what he's looking for. If he leaves spurs I think he will go abroad.

Agree2 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 23:18:24
Poch may be a good manager and many may think he is what we need. Maybe yes maybe no. For me, Iā€™m not sure as he could be another Moyes from Everton. Both did well and maintained in a small budget.
More importantly as I have mentioned some time back even if we want Poch it doesnā€™t mean he wants to join us. So yes I agree with Ed0333 in some ways.

Agree1 Disagree0

02 Jan 2019 07:38:32
Keep your knickers on e033333. Did you write that with a few jars in you or what? Bloody hell šŸ˜‚

Of course United don't have the 'define' right to any coach in world football. I was just giving my opinion and I believe that Ed and his old chums at the top have no actual real logic behind this appointment, Feels like a PR stunt.

We may or may not get our first, it may or not be poch (Just a guess) . But going by the last couple of appointments, they surely have to get the next one right.

And forgive me for not getting carried away by the last 3 results. I'd rather see where we are in a few months before appointment OGS.

Hope that's okay with you and not too arrogant šŸ‘.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed0333's Note - mate Iā€™m a raging alcoholic and always edit when half cut so my logic is always skewed. But correct me if Iā€™m wrong has OGS not one every game heā€™s been in charge of at United? Has he not got the players playing for him? Has he nor rejuvenated Pogba? Is he not universally liked within the club? Has he not propelled you up the table and within reach of top 4? Has he not got lovely dimples when he smiles? You talk about getting the next managerial appointment right whose to say Poch or Zidane will be right or whoever it is Ed the pleb is considering. Maybe you have the right guy at helm already? As I say excuse my logic Iā€™ve had a few drinks.

Happy new year all. Once again OGS says the obvious, and the mood lifts. Speaking about Sanchez, saying he is raring to go, and is finding the net in training regularly. all very well but the most significant comment is along the lines of - (paraphrasing) to get the best out of him we need movement in and around him, he thrives on that with the ball on the floor - Wow, hands up if you had never seen Sanchez at Arsenal playing exactly that way?

Hope we see the Sanchez we thought we were getting. Tough game tomorrow night -Shelvey usually plays like Pirlo against us.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

01 Jan 2019 12:49:17
I made a point about Sanchez some months ago, to get the best out of him we needed to push the back line up the field 10 yards and connect midfield with attack. Ole has done that in the old SAF way plus has them supporting each other better further up the pitch. Adding someone like Sanchez higher up the pitch with more support could bring dividends. Our problem remains defensively and leaving space behind will cause issues, DDG is not a sweeper keeper. I hope and expect the Arsenal Sanchez to turn up a bit like the Juventus Pogba has. Enjoy the ride tomorrow night!

Agree2 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 13:05:07
Final nail in the Jose coffin if Sanchez comes back and bags 15 goals+ in the second half of the season - which he quite rightly should be doing if utilised correctly. He should be the No7 we have been waiting for as he is top quality. Fingers crossed.

Agree1 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 13:14:27
Ole's just done the basics to get the best out of this set of players. We didn't have the right set of players to play the Jose way and he shouldn't have tried to shoe horn the wrong tactics in. Red man is right we still look a little shaky at the back but this style will work against 90% of teams.

Agree1 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 13:16:50
I really believe Sanchez will be like a new signing if we keep playing this style of fast paced, pressured, attacking football.

The prospect of Pogba, Martial, Rashford and then Sanchez in this form is very exciting.

I hope we buy a high quality RB this winter and maybe a midfield maestro of Verratti's calibre.

Agree2 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 13:26:39
Eric

I maintain there are questions over some of the players commitment levels for the previous manager. Yes Ole has been more positive but there was no excuse not to give everything when playing for the shirt. If Sanchez like Pogba suddenly becomes superman it raises questions whether some like it or not.

Agree3 Disagree1

01 Jan 2019 14:55:33
I take your point Red Man but, but let's say you were hired as a salesman and your managing director decided to deploy you as the accountant instead: you might be expected to fail however much effort you put in. Moreover it might be hard for you to maintain much enthusiasm for your work having first been set up for failure and then subsequently criticized in public for failing. Research suggests that someone unhappy in their work will not suddenly become happy in it just because they get a raise.

From the CEO down, through the manager and onto the field, the post-SAF period seems to have been a continuing sequence of trying to slot the wrong people into the wrong positions.

Agree5 Disagree0

01 Jan 2019 15:44:44
Shawthing

It isnā€™t about being happy but about putting effort in. We can all see that Mourinhoā€™s tactics were too defensive but if the players gave everything and failed then it would be solely down to the managers tactics. If you were hired as a salesman and deployed as an accountant because the MD has seen something in you but you decide, it wonā€™t work, you canā€™t be bothered because you donā€™t agree with the MD, what does that say about you?

You mention happy unhappy and pay, the research is very old from Maslow and Herzberg, pay is not a motivating factor.

I said on here before SAF retired the club needed a good plan but they didnā€™t seem to have one at all. It is from the owners down, the direction needs be one but it hasnā€™t been, it needs to be now. Football people who know football need to make the football decisions, I hope that is what is now being planned.

Agree0 Disagree1

01 Jan 2019 15:45:19
Sanchez hitting form is important for us in achieving top 4. A front 3 of martial, Rash and Sanchez would scare the opponents.
He also like Rashford, presses from the front and works his socks off.

Happy new year! We will beat Newcastle tomorrow and we will beat Tottenham too, i also think we do now have a chance to beat PSG and if i were in charge of the club i would be working towards making OLE the manager for the next 2,3 years with an option to 5 instead of keep appointing "world class managers" who don't have a clue what it means to manage man utd, from history, traditions to culture and philosophy Ole knows all that, he is the perfect candidate for the job, with him i think we have a real chance to get to the top sooner rather than later. Sometimes you know when something is just right and OLE to me is the best option that we have to get back to where we were before Moyes. We will make top 4 and we will have a very good run in the champions league even if PSG beat us we will go down fighting the Utd way.
