Micheal Owen was offered a further year for the same reason he was recruited an a free. It was financial prudence. He has done nothing in the season to warrant a further year and the fact that SAF has suggested that an ageing and lack of pace Owen will get more game time next year is absurd. If I were Morrison or Will Keane I would be saying that we could sit on the bench and make just as much impact as Owen has last year for much less than 50k a week. If this doesn't put off young players coming to OT nothing will. This is a joke and a clear indication as to the quality of player will be recruit this year. Financial constraints are at the forefront of everything we are doing! Posters saying that Owen is happy to sit on the bench, and therefore a good signing. you bet your life he is happy, wouldn't you be?

what players next year have to be registered in our 25 man squad? My understanding is that any player who will be 21yo by the 1st of january 2012 has to be registered in your 25 man squad for next season(2011-2012). This being as for the majority of the season the player will be over 21. If this is right then we currently have 31 players on our books who would have to be registered(32 when De Gea signs). Can anyone tell me if i've got this correct? Thanks.

The glazers have dug deep in previous seasons. Berb was 35million. If u tot up da smaller buys last season that still added up too over 20 million. Fergie himself said 3-4 big signings will be made. Keep the faith please. Its only a few days since r season ended.

Hi guys. Just interested on people's views of Ashley Young.

Whilst I would prefer someone like Sanchez, Young will be reasonably cheap at around £12m or so, proven in the EPL and a decent squad player. Although he may not be the kind of player which we have in mind to really bolster United's first team, he will most likely be handy to have for rotation.

It appears that he is very likely to sign for us now, so will you be happy to hear this or disappointed. I'd be interested in any Ed's thoughts too.

Rudderpost {Ed003's Note - There's no doubting he has ability, my only gripe with him is his constant petulance towards officials and his own players if things arent going right for him}

I love Man United. . but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE will Manchester United fans stop being stupid and understand that there is no major amounts of money to spend. . Flip sake!

Why was Sir Alex looking Paul Scholes to sign for another year. . . . .Why has he offered Michael Owen a further year. . . . and why have we gave Ryan Giggs another year. . . GREAT PLAYERS YEAH but lets all think about it. Past there best comes to mind.

We have players coming back from loan spells. . Cleverly, Macheda, Wellbeck, Diouf.etc and we won the Youth Cup and Fergie has already stated he will be keeping them next season.

We are close to signing a new GK called David De Gea who is 20. . . and he will not cost 17m up front! Its around 8m plus add ons.

We are after a young French defender from Lens for around 3 Mil. . What does that tell ya. .

But the Glazer family will i promise you sign a BIG NAME PLAYER. Anything to win over deluded Man Utd fans because that's what they are like. .

Dont expect alot of money to be spent but expect 6 players coming in, and don't be suprised if there is a major departure to raise cash. .

Nani. . .
Anderson. .
Vidic. . .
Evra. . .
Berbatov. . .

Owen signing today, ferguson said 100% welbeck and diouf will be back, plus hernandez and rooney. And no mention of macheda yet. so u can rule out benzema, hulk, aguero, falcao. 100% Today with owen just made me realise we will never sign big players again like ferdinand, veron, stam, van nistellrooy, cole, yorke. . WE HAVE NO MONEY. We should probably expect average signings like varane, young, adam. . BRUTAL.

I CANNOT BELIEVE IT???!

I've been doing some engineering work around Eastland today, and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a certain MR. MESSI (couldn't mistake him for his scraggy hair) walking around the ground with Shiekh Mohammed whatever his name is!

After speaking to a few people inside the ground he's apparently offered Mr. Messi a handsome £475,000k a week to join city and he's clearly tempted. What's even more frightening is that apparently the Shiekh is also giving MORE tours/meetings tomorrow to a few other global superstars including Mr. Strong, Mr. Bump and Little Miss Sunshine. Granted that Sheikh Mohammed whatever his name is doesn't know football too well, but blimey he's stopping at nothing for world domination that lad! Can't wait to see Mancini's face when the Sheikh reveals his new signings!

Please god lets not buy adam, over rated and useless. Fergie must realise this, plus he is to old to fit in with utd's structure of buying youth or proven prem experience (one average season).

Likely purchases would be modric, if the £25m Rednapp muted at has any merit. Seems value for money which Fergie has said he is looking for.

This will be main signing plus a likely couple of younger players which usually throw surprises.

Rumour around Young would also fit as cheaper as in last year of contract £15m max.

Would be very surprised in Bale, Sneijder and Ronaldo I can not see happing. Would love de Rossi but again older and unproven in epl.

I have no insider knowledge just sensible opinions from a first time poster but avid reader

I noticed something. 2009, Ronaldo left. We needed a winger. We looked at Ribery. We signed up Valencia. 2010, we needed a striker. We looked at Benzema/Villa. We signed up Hernandez. We relied on gambles then although they turned out great. We signed up players that get merchandise revenue. Can you see us getting Sanchez for some of the same reasons. Gilly

Post on here recently is very accurate on the Owen deal.
MUFC are not a big-buy club anymore.

There is no money for this. The profits are needed to service the debt, to pay the bankers, to whom the club is in hoc.
This site is great fun, but there will be no top class buys; hence Owen, Young and Adam are the limit

Dream Signings and ones I think are completely plausable

De Gea - Signed sealed delivered simply put this one is done

Higuain - If rumours in the spanish press are true this guy would be a gem for 15 mil

Sneijder - Had a terrible 2nd half of the season and rumour has it this is because he has had his head turned by interest from UTD

De Rossi - Apparently wants out of Italy, always been Roma through and through however off field issues have meant he now wants out.

now i doubt we'll sign a new striker simply because we don't need one, signing owen up for another year is a great idea as he offers alot and is cheap meaning the money is there to spend on where we need it. At the moment we have rooney hernandez berbatov owen welbeck macheda diouf king cofie keane all on our books, that's 10 strikers whats the plan play them all and a goalkeeper to beat barca? I espect berbatov and macheda to leave with king going out on loan. Diouf and Welbeck will be staying and be given more chances with rooney and hernandez as first choice and owen as back up. We don't need anyone else, why spend millions for a bench warmer when we could spend it on much needed midfield reinforcements. If your questioning on weather we have money to spend then i surgest you think about who will be playing in goal for us next year, it'll be a 20m young spanish lad. So don't tell me that we don't have money to spend, it might not be a bottomless pit like at city but we'll have enough to buy wat we need. Sir alex said that we'll sign 3 players i expect a GK a defensive midfielder and a creative midfielder then maybe a few youngsters.

Some people on here have no idea. owen signing a new deal is not proof of a lack of funds, it shows common sense, when we won the treble we had a good striker happy to be on the bench and people then didn't moan. Its the same now, just its owen rather than solskjaer. it gives us a proven goalscorer ready on the bench. And it by no means suggests berba is off or staying. fergie has a point when he says theres no value in the market. Carroll for 35m? Torres 50m? Hellooo? If anything id say SAFs point has been proven.

People were moaning last summer and look what happened. League no 19 and runners up in the Champions League to probably the best team going atm. if you want to complain that no big quality signings have been made, at least wait until September when we'll know for sure, and when we do get them, the same people who moan will say they said we got them.

Believe in fergie!

What do you think? gan, Syd!, Ed?

P.s. ed when do you suspect we'll start hearing of the bigger transfers going through, be it international or domestic? thanks :)

Wesley sneider would be a must. Now Paul scholes has retired. We need to bolster that midfield. Anderson and fletcher aren't going to be enough. We need an experienced midfielder. Someone with a great presence, and someone who can score aswel as great playmaking. Scneider would be great but there's a doubt a he has a contract with inter with 3 years to run still. That's who we need

Surely the reason why Michael Owen has been kept on has to do with the development of Hernandez and Welbeck. Hernandez we all know has outshone the expectation and will gain valuable positional knowledge. With Welbeck playing mainly reserve team football (+Carling Cup) and going out on loan he has not really had the chance to play with a striker at the level of Owen, so it will be an important year for him on the training ground - Could be the future of England's front line.

Also signals for me that Berbatov is on his on his way. .

Four strikers for 11/12 - Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck, Owen (+ AN Other maybe young signing)

The doom and gloom brigade are out in their numbers today, Owen is offered a one year extension and somehow this means we are not spending any money this summer, we are selling are best players and we are not going to challenge the likes of Chelsea & City for the title next season.

Get a grip people, Owen has been given a one year extension because he still offers something to the squad, he wouldn't have been offered a new deal else. We will be spending money this summer. We will be buying a central midfielder and we will be buying another striker, just chill out and have some faith.

We will be replacing Scholes and we will replace Berbatov when he is sold. We have already replaced De Gea and it looks like we are very close to sealing the Varane deal. If we can Replace Obertan with Ashley Young then we will be all set for next season.

Van Der Sar - De Gea
Kuszczak - Lindegaard
Brown - Varane
Obertan - Young
Macheda - Welbeck
Bebe (Loan) - Cleverley
Berbatov - ??????
Scholes - ??????

We will be strengthening the squad, the question that still remains is who will replace Berbatov & Scholes? Who will be the striker & central midfielder brought in?

Why do people think utd have a bottomless pit of money. Hundreds of millions in debt and recently recorded a loss. Fergies only spent about half of the ronaldo money which was 2 seasons ago now, and there are plenty of areas to strenghten. The fact that Owen has been given a new deal speaks volumes. He's re-signed him knowing he's half decent back up on low wages(compared to others) and someone who doesn't mind sitting on the bench. He's obviously forcing berbatov out as he still has some re-sale value, hence the owen deal. Also, previously if a player had a falling out with SAF then they would be out the door, but anderson has been allowed to work his way back in. More proof the money isn't there to to replace him. It'll be a pre season of selling to help buy this year and with scholes and neville retiring, Giggs on his last legs, no real match winner in center mid, there are quite a few areas that need strenghtening. De Gea seems done and possible Young but I can't see beyond that unless Utd sell a fair few players.

I think we should sell Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez, Nani, Valencia, Park, Vidic, Rio and the other dead wood. We need players that compliment each other. It was really exciting to hear that Michael Owen has signed a new contract. Don't forget, Owen's salary is a snip at 50k a week, and starting a whole 1 prem league game last season, you just can't get better value than that! I thought Micheal was outstanding at Wembley on Saturday, and the way he sat on that bench and didn't suffer any long-term injury when getting up, he deserved man of the match. If we had the money I would like us to sign Emile Heskey. He had a great partnership with Michael (who could forget Germany 1 England 5).
Seeing that David Gill told that government committee our transfer funds in the bank have already been spent, (although just as a point of detail no players have arrived and the money hasn't moved), we probably can't afford this, but if we could buy West Ham's back four and maybe one or two Dagenham midfielders, with the icing on the cake. .Charlie Adam on loan from Blackpool! Then we can really show those Barcelona chaps a thing or two next time! In the Glazers we trust.

i don't expect any big signings this summer if im honest, we keep hearing about all this money we have to spend yet SAF doesn't spend it and makes excuses up like, "the price for players is too high" or "we tried to sign such and such but their club didn't want to let them go"

it's going to be another one of those years, i expect adam young, varane, and maybe some reject.

if SAF doesn't spend cash on top quality players then we can say good bye to number 20 and forget the CL, this united team isn't good enough, do you really expect chelsea, man city to be as bad as they was last year. . chelsea will improve and man city will keep spending until they win the league.

worrying times ahead in my opinion.

"Michael Owen's signed a new deal. With him, Diouf and Welbeck returning next year, I hope there is enough room for a new striker."

Seriously, why do people want a new striker. Our main striker has supposedly had a bad season and we are still finding the net more often than any other team.

With the strikers we have, we really don't need to spend any money in that area. Owen has resigned today, which i think is a great decision. If he is fit for the season, he will score some important goals, theres no doubt about that.

Berba to me is still not a guaranteed goalscorer, his goals this season are very misleading considering the way they were spread across games. But, he does provide us with a striker who can hold the ball.

Add in the return of Wellbeck, Diouf and possily macheda and there is just no room.

Owen re-signing today says it all, unless Berba goes, which is highly unlikely IMO, we will not be seein ganother striker at OT this coming season.

If chicarito gets injured we have noone to put in simple
If u think welbeck diouf Mach are good enough I suggest specsavers

"United now need to replace 2 midfielders. Obviously Scholes after his retirement - farwell to the legend, but also Hargreaves. When Barca were defeated on route to Moscow, Hargreaves was phenomonally good at containing Xavi & Iniesta. Since then we haven't gotten anywhere near them.
For Scholes I think the names banded about so far would do a good job - Modric, Sneijder, Pastore or Ganso, but all of these would need some protection in midfield to play their attacking game. De Rossi, Xabi Alonso or Schweinsteiger would do an excellent job in this respect. My preference would be Xabi Alsonso or Schweinsteiger. Could we sign either of these guys?

Thoughts Ed or anyone?

Adz"

On the route to Moscow in 08 Hargreaves played right back with as Wes Brown was moved infield to replace the injured Vidic. The Brilliant midfield that contained Xavi and Iniesta was actually the trio of Park, Carrick and Scholes. Just Saying.

I don't have any contacts, i'm just a Man Utd fan my whole life. And from following the Man Utd and seeing Fergies philosophy for years, the following makes perfect sense. I'm hoping this is the way Fergie goes and doesn't change his philosophy.

If Man Utd decide to go on this big spending spree, I am just wondering, what will become of the upcoming talent??
Welbeck, Pogba, Cleverly, Morrison, De Laet, Macheda, Tunnicliffe, Petrucci - to name a few. These guys have to be given a chance.
I don't think that Fergie is going to buy the quantity of players that people expect.
Yes, he will add a goal keeper, a Centre midfielder and may a young winger.

People keep mentioning full backs, why on earth would we buy a full back, Fabio & Rafael will be our full backs for years to come - Quality

We also do not need stikers, we have quality young strikers - we need people to provide these strikers we currently have with goal scoring opportunities

I believe Fergie will shake up(Overhaul) the squad but i would think that would mostly be promoting the talent we have. We have some seriously talented youngsters and must utilise this resource.

Sir Alex normally operates with four strikers rotating them throughout the season. It keeps them all fresh and fighting for a spot in the team. Last year Sir Alex went with:

Rooney
Berbatov
Chicarito
Owen

I think we can all agree that this line up worked well. Everyone chipped in one way or another although Owen's involvement was minimal.

I'm not sure what to make of Owen's new deal. Sir Alex has said that Welbeck and Diouf will be returning. Correct me if I'm wrong. Now he's saying Owen will get more game time. So what will the new striker line up look like? Do you guys still consider Rooney a striker? Is there any room for a new goalscorer?

IMO Berbatov will go this summer and Rooney can no longer be considered a striker. Hernandez will be at the Copa America in a few months. And Welbeck and Diouf have not been tested at this level. Unless Sir Alex decides to increase his number of strikers from 4 to 5, we've got problems. Let's hope for something like this:

Chicarito
Owen
Diouf
Welbeck
New Striker

If Berbatov goes and is not replaced by a proper striker then I'll be disappointed. I don't see how a tired Chica, a crocked Owen and two inexperienced kids can lead the line for Manchester United.

Why does everyone think that Diouf will come back in to the first team. I would much rather see Macheda come back for the first team/impact sub and sell Diouf but that is IMO.

Oh my God, why oh why has Owen been given a new contract?

Syd, MPez, gan, anybody on here, any Editors, please alleviate my fears here. SAF barely acknowledged Owen's existence this season; the guy must have made, what, 3-4 appearances? With Berbatov rumoured to be leaving, SAF has now handed Owen a new deal and hopes Michael will be given more playing time next season.

Now, with Welbeck/Machida/Diouf out on loan, its highly likely 2 of them will be leaving. . .I'll assume the latter two. If SAF is looking to play Owen more, then with Rooney, Chicha, Welbeck surely there is no room for a big-name striker to be signed this summer?!

If we did, Owen would never play, so what would be the point of this new deal?

Please guys, help me calm down, please say this isn't going to be another 'one of those' pre-seasons in the transfer market?

It turns out I was wrong all the time and the Glazers have shown their intent to open the purse strings and go and get players that will make a difference. This young lad owen we have just signed on a one year contract must be a young world beater and I bet he has cost a fortune. I was worried for a bit that we would just be giving out contracts to knackered old players who play about 50 minutes all season but no things have changed. I believe we have been trying to sign some young lad called Scholes but he has turned us down. Never mind we have our eyes on a youngster called Giggs who I have heard is a bit useful and also I understand that we need a midfielder so the scouts are looking at a player called Vierra who is a City. How stupid i was to doubt the Glazers. RAINFISHTROMBONE

With Owen signing a new deal I expect Berbatov to leave, he's been linked to spurs for 10mill and Newcastle for 7.5Mill, ed how much do you think we will get for him. I think 15Mill especially when he is the top scorer and darren bent is 24million.

Dimitar Berbatov to Inter Milan with sneidjer to utd for 25 mil.

20 mil for kaka + nani

lucka modric 24 mil + carrick

Right so we are going to give a 24 yr old Nani who is proven in EPL plus 24 mill for a 29 yr old crock who wouldn't last ten mins in Prem.

Hmmmm yeah makes sense alright. . . NOT! !

just heard snidjer (sorry 4 the spelling) has signed 4 us for 27million + nani
Now are you rating nani at only 7m or schneider at around 52m? Although would love to see him at united not as a replacement for scholes though as for me scholes is irreplaceable.

Is anybody like me in hoping Nani is not sold this summer??? His development is very much taking a similar route to Ronaldo (really frustrating in the beginning but raw. .now still a little frustrating but coming up with the important goals/assists when needed and showing some sublime skill) to add to that being voted Players Players of the Year by his team mates (which is a huge accolade). I know he hasn't got the frame to be as physically over-whelming as Ronaldo but next year could really be a big season for Nani if he works a little more on his decision making. .he's only young still and has a few years before he hits his prime!

Also if we do end up signing a Sanchez/Hazard/Gotze. .he could be used in the middle a little bit more alongside Rooney behind Hernandez so he can unleash more shots. .(however this would mean needing a huge DM to cover any holes which we don't have at the moment. ) Only wish Hargreaves would have stayed fit. .imagine the silverware in the cupboard with him in the team over the last couple of years!?!?!?! ?!?
