Newcastle fan in peace (not in any position to ruffle feathers now anyway if you know what I mean). I was wondering what your thoughts were on this situation. You buy Ronaldo and Lewandowski, What do you think will happen to rooney and welbeck? they will both want to be in the starting 11, maybe drop rooney into midfield and tell welbeck he stays on the bench or sell welbeck or rooney or both?

Geordie Al

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd quite happily let Rooney leave, I don't think I'd notice that much if he weren't in the team and that in itself says a lot compared to a couple of years ago when I thought it would be devastating.

I'm not saying I want him to leave, I'd be happy to see him in midfield, if he could sort out his fitness and think his short passing leaves a bit to be desired.

Welbeck I like, think he is a good young player, and a loyal one at that, something very rare in the modern game. But I can't see him ever being a week in week out starter. Given our current crop I'd be happy to keep him as a winger but that again depends on signings.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 May 2013 23:36:53
Welbeck's young he'd accept rotation. Rooney can like it or lump it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Id have to agree, Rooney as been massively overrated the past 3 seasons. In the world cup a few years ago the press were saying will the world cup be remembered for rooney or messi? To even mention rooney in the same breath as messi is daft

Barcelona have been taught a footballing lesson.

JK92

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yes and the lesson was maths based:

4 + 3 = 7!

This goes to show we don't have to play the Barca way to win things. Let's concerntrate on what we do best and the areas we can improve on.

Fair play to the Germans for now though!

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah, but it also shows, they've got two world class wingers, midfielders that are the best around and tactics that are modern. They are powerful in every dept.
If we want to play our way, we better start buying top players, because that is the only way we can force our style on the opposition.
One thing that has to be mentioned, barca were without a lot of first team regulars for both matches, including messi of course. Any team will miss him.
Nomidfield

Agree0 Disagree0

I prefer the German style anyway HB, more direct and still nice passing, if i'm honest Barcelona bore me when they pass around the defense and midfield for ages.

JK92

Agree0 Disagree0

The level of control was scary at times really. It would be easy to say Barca played bad but I genuinely believe that was partly because Bayern didn't allow them to play.

Yes they didn't have Messi and their recent form hasn't been the best but still be given a thumping like that was a surprise.

At least Real put up some fight in their semi, Barca just looked tired and deflated and they were played off the park.

I've never been a fan of the Germans but two worthy finalists and whoever gets it a worthy winner. Would like Dortmund to get it partly because I think they play attractive football, partly because I'd like us to have a fair few of their players, but mostly because I have money on it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Barca's weaknesses have been shown up and now they will have to learn to adapt as other teams will learn to exploit them as well.

First off over 50% of Barca's goals are either scored or set up by Messi, so take him out of the team and Barca's goal threat is reduced significantly. Now Bayern got lucky in the fact he was injuried, this won't be the case for most teams facing Barca, but if you could get someone to man mark Messi you will reduce his influance.

The second weakness they have is no natural width, it all comes from their full backs, so if you cut them of and don't allow them to get forward then all of Barca's attacks have to go through the middle which is very crowded as they have 5/6 of their own players in their, add 5 or 6 of your own players as well and it suddenly becomes almost impossible to get a clean shot on goal.

Thats how to defend against them, as for scoring. You need to catch them on the break, as they press high they will always be susceptable to quick counter attacks.

They are small so use your height advantage at set pieces.

And be clinical as you may not get many chances.

If yo tick all these boxes then Barca can be beaten.

Beating Bayern at the present time maybe abit harder though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Man mark messi? No chance of that I'm afraid. When he's fit, he will pull his marker all over the place and beat him at will.
Only way to shut messi is to reduce the space around him, like inter did a few years ago. If you can confine the space around him with two or three players, then you've got half a chance.
Nomidfield

Agree0 Disagree0

JK92

I totally agree - not only do I prefer BM's style of play to Barca but it is also the way in which United should set up IMO - a mixture of power, pace, skill and commitment.

For this we would need a top CM'er alongside Carrick and a top winger to hurt teams when it matters.

HBadger

You need to watch the Inter game again my friend. They had Cambiasso man mark Messi and follow him all over the pitch, then when Messi would recieve the ball him and who ever else was there would press him and limit him. I agree that no one player in world football can mark Messi or Ronaldo out of a game completely, but you can limit them by making sure they are always out numbered and have no space. It is possible but it takes huge concentration and itelligent play.

Agree0 Disagree0

John Terry man marked Messi well when they played Messi. Its a horrible tactic but sometimes has to be done.
Phil jones is the kinda player that is geared up to do that role when needed.

aaallj5

Man mark Messi? A greek bloke did a pretty good job, Papastathopoulos I think it was, in the last world cup, until he got a farcical booking.

Lol, did anyone else hear the Bayern fans singing footballs coming home? Fair play to them for destroying Barca in both games, Bayern made them look positively ordinary throughout. Everyone on her raves about the Dortmund team but they lag a long way being Bayern in the league. Should be a great final

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The Germans, after winning 96 actually adopted the song as their own and the players started a sing-a-long from the balcony of their hotel. So it is no surprise to me that the Bayern fans started singing it whilst the why were garrunteed to be playing at wembley for another trophy!

In: Garay, Strootman, Lewandoski
Possible in: Rodriguez, Bains, Bale, Ronaldo
Out: Nani, Anderson (possibly as a swap + money for Rodriguez), Scholes to retire
Possible out: Valencia and Fletcher might get forced to retire

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The top 3 and Rodriguez would be the dream summer for me. I can see us signing 2, maybe 3 depending on departures.

Would definitely like to see Strootman and Rodriguez because I think they are exactly what we need. And Lewy just because he is class.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Fergie saying 2 possibly 3 players to be signed will be Rodriquez if the likelihood is Bale stays at spurs and then one of Strootman/Gundogan who by the way looked a quality player against Real last night with either a possible 3rd being Lewandowski if he becomes available this summer.

TomP

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think Strootman and Rodriguez could well be 2 signings this summer. Exactly what we need.

Gundogan as much as he's a good player I think he'll be staying at Dortmund for a couple of seasons yet, people just like the idea because he's looked good recently.

Surprised to see cleverly playing for the U21 s might be in contention for the weekend

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Does seem a bit strange and I'm sure 'certain' posters will come to the conclusion that he's on his way out or is being taught a lesson. I think you might be right though, he's been rested and kept out of the limelight recently so perhaps SAF is getting him ready for the last 2/3 games now (in terms of fitness) by playing him in the U21's.

Agree0 Disagree0

He getting sold! Only joking, but he better get fit for the next campaign. Its a big season for him next year, this is where we see if he's capable of be a Nicky Butt or an Eric djemba-djemba.
Who remembers Liam Miller?

aaallj5

Agree0 Disagree0

Aaallj5, although I agree it is a big season for Cleverley next season, he is already far better than Djemba-Djemba & Liam Miller. Next season will determine whether he is a regular in the line-up or a very good squad player. He is in zero danger of being sold.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Well the theory of him being rested goes out the window. I think next season will be a telling year for him as to where his career goes with United.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram, how on earth does it prove he wasn't being rested? Very odd post.

He has been rested for a month playing zero minutes. He will need to build his fitness up again before he returns.

Seems he is being carefully managed for next season. We do have the one of the best sports science team around.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram

I don't think it's been a case of purely resting him but also keeping him out of the limelight and out of the high pressure of the run in. I think he did OK earlier in the season, but played a lot and started to fade. This is purely good man management by SAF. If Cleverly is to play again this season (now the pressure is off) he needs to build up a bit of match fitness, which the U21's is ideal for.

I would think SAF sees Cleverly as a good squad option who still has time to improve. But for next season I hope we buy a top CM to take the brunt of the action away from him.

HBadger

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney

You said you thought he was done for the year based on the theory of having played too much football. That theory does not hold as what is the point of him playing in the U21 3 weeks before the season is over. I would agree if it was start of the season and he was just getting some game time for fitness sakes to be followed by first team action.

I am not a cleverly basher and very undecided on him but it might be that the manager just did not pick him the last few weeks because of his form.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram, I said I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't play another competitive game this season. He has been rested for over a month since 2nd April, it's not surprising he has had a game in the reserves. When you are being rested you still need to keep your fitness levels up. His performances were starting to dip a couple of month's ago through fatigue. You reduce the number of games, but you cannot stop exercising completely, you still need to keep your fitness levels up.

Out of Falcao and Lewy which would you'll prefer?

Diego

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lol, another time portal. We did this to death last week

Agree0 Disagree0

Lewandowski.

Agree0 Disagree0

In fairness AJH he prob didn't see the thread, it was a harmless question from diego.
For me this all depends on wot style of play we are going to play next season, agree with shappy I think the 433 is one i'd like to see again, so in saying that it would have to be Lewandowski as his hold up play and passing is very good, where as Falcao is a penalty box striker, not amazing with his back to goal but if u can get him the ball in the box 16 yards or under there is only ever 1 outcome, he reminds me of Rudd in that sense but with a touch more finese in the area

Agree0 Disagree0

Depends, success now? then Falcao.

or Lewandowski a great young talent and develop him into a better player and have a sell on value?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think there is less to Falcao than people make out, he is undoubtedly a very good player and a great scorer but I think the stats perhaps make him look better than he is. At times anyway.

Lewandowski for me all day long.

Agree0 Disagree0

Falcao is a better striker but will cost double. The reason I would like Lewy is also cost related. If the cost was the same, Falcao anyday for me.

Strootman is the New Gareth Barry. Why would we sign an Average Midfielder? He is slow Even Jordy Claise and Leroy Fer are better than him in the Eredivisie. The only player who would improve our Midfield is Luka Modric. Fact and Fergie knows it! {Ed004's Note - So the Dutch midfield captain is no better than Barry?}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Don't talk nonsense. You obviously have never watched Kevin Strootman in your life. He is an all action, box-to-box midfielder with a terrific left foot and he doesn't shy from getting stuck in. He reminds me a lot of Steven Gerrard, and if he ends up half as good then he will be some player. He is the captain of the Dutch national team for a reason.

GRD

01 May 2013 22:48:23
Exactly Shahram well said. One's over rated and the others Dutch

Agree0 Disagree0

I've watched him on five or six occassions and each time he has reminded me of Gerrard in the way he gets about the pitch, plays passes short and long and is a great leader. Don't insult me by trying to educate me on spotting a football player. As for Steven Gerrard being overrated that is ridiculous. Are you telling me you wouldn't have wanted Gerrard in our engine room for the past ten or so years? Of course you would have. He'd get a game for us even now. One of the best, if not the best, central midfielders in PL history for his ability, leadership, drive and longevity. If you are telling me Steven Gerrard in his prime was anything less than world class then your opinion is void to me. Only a bitter person who is anti-Liverpool would disagree.

GRD

Agree0 Disagree0

I am not insulting you but they are in no way similar. Gerard at his peak was a great player and Strootman is not Gerrard.

Strootman lacks pace and a very different player. He is difficult to describe as he is ok in many parts of the game but not great in a specific area. The closest player that comes to mind is Khedira.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

Gerrard has been one of the best England midfielders of all time but I highly doubt his ability and skills as an engineer GRD

Agree0 Disagree0

Gerrard is pants i'm not bitter but the lad plays in a really below average team an has done for a long time I don't know much about strootman but if he is like Gerrard then keep him. I think Gerrards loyalty to liverpool has stopped him developing to a truly great player with another team. i'm not saying he is the worst but far from the best an someone said the best over the past few years em paul scholes has being the best hands down.

CAIN

Agree0 Disagree0

I noticed the post about Strootman being as good as Barry is never left his name. I don't blame you. you know nothing about football spouting crap like that.

Simmo

Agree0 Disagree0

Gerrard is a person who shoots at every oppurtunity at goal without looking for other options and technically inferior in midfield.

gerrard is not fit enough to lace scholes boots

nikz

Agree0 Disagree0

Guys/GRD

Gerrard according to the manager turned us down on 2 occasions so obviously SAF saw a lot in him. He is not what he used to be but in a united shirt would have been unbelievable if you can get past the fact that he is a scourer.

GRD you are overrating Strootman, I find his lack of pace worrying in as recent as the Ajax/PSV game as Erickson just ran rings around him and completely outplayed him. The funny thing is I am not that big on Erickson either and out of the current Ajax setup rate Fisher the most as being United quality in a few years.

I am also not convinced we are even going to sign Strootman and personally believe we will all be surprised by our transfer signings.

Really think our problems on the wing lie with Gaitan and Robben. Simple fact is, none of our wingers this season and even the season before have played anywhere near the standard needed to wear the shirt on a week in week out basis! Gaitan and Robben are comfortable operating in a traditional wing position and also as more inverted wingers. it also appears Robben may be available this summer, but obviously no one knows what the transfer window holds! Gaitan has been a long term target, and I feel he is more probable than Rodriguez and just as good (despite not having a fantastic season this year). A summer of Strootman, Robben and Gaitan would be fantastic I think. might even leave enough in the kitty for a LB depending on sales!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Robbe seems to attract trouble, don't think we woud touch him now.

People say that Zaha should not be played regularly next season since he is not 'Ready', the question is what have our 'Ready' wingers Valencia, Young and Nani contributed this season? I'm sure Zaha if trusted can raise his game slowly slowly and turn out to be a good signing for us.

I think he should play at least 20 games next season in all comps. Same goes for Powell if he does not get loaned.

Until you don't trust these guys we won't be able to judge if they are ready or not. I am not saying we should play them in all games and exhaust them but they should play regularly.

SAF who produced the class of 92 seems to have lost his faith in these academy youngsters.

I hope if Zaha, Powell stay at the club next season and are not loaned out they play at least 20 odd games.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree, the championship player of the year! surely he's ready to make the step up? and can't be any worse than the wingers we have judgeing by form :)

Rouge Diablo :)

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree I think he'll get at least 15-20 games. He won't be 1st choice but he will be given opportunities. TBF he's far more progressed and older than Powell when he arrived and in fact he still is to this day I'd say. Powell could do with a good loan spell next season if he stays fit IMO.

01 May 2013 14:41:48
I know that I change my mind a lot on here, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say exactly what I think will happen in the summer, so:

I think that we will sign 3 first team players, I don't think Zaha will affect this as I think we bought him a year sooner than we wanted give the interest of other clubs, our hand was forced so to speak. So I think the 3 will be Ronaldo, Lewandowski & Strootman. Why? Well all three are nearing the end of their deals, like Kagawa & RVP they therefore represent good value. Ronaldo is in his peak and the other two will peak within 3 years I think. SAF has said that essentially you can never have enough top players in one position so I think Lewandowski in particular is likely. Signs point to Ronaldo and Venus is lining up with Jupiter and all that and I think now is the time to make our move for him given the situation at Madrid and what's going on in his personal life and SAFs age. As for Strootman, well the signs of the agent suggests a move, we know we're interested and he seems the most likely.

So that's my 3 INS, as for OUTS. Well the writing on the all is plain to see for Anderson, Nani & Macheda. Nani & Anderson will be put in the shop window. Macheda will hopefully be bought by Stuttgart. Bebe's attitude stinks so I hope he leaves and its time for Scholes to retire. Its then between Herndandez & Rooney. Given Hernandez attitude I think he will be kept, Rooney for me will go, his wage is too high for the role he is seemingly moving into. a squad role. I don't see us offering him the same deal. IF he stays then it will be for a considerably lower wage. Expecting PSG to move in for him though. I also think that Lindegaard will be on his way and Amos will be number 2 with Johnstone number 3 choice. Its about time that we bring another home grown keeper through.

As for the youth and Fletcher. Well Fletcher I think will come back in a limited role or become a coach, that's the most I see for him. Youth wise, Januzaj is the one that I expect to step up. Henriquez, Keane's could make it but a loan is likely. Tunnicliffe, Cole & Lingard will get loans but realistically they won't make it. We may see youth come in, perhaps a pre contract agreement for Jon Williams from Palace?

So in conclusion:

INS: Ronaldo, Lewandowski, Zaha, Strootman.

OUT: Anderson, Nani, Rooney, Scholes, Macheda, Bebe, Lindegaard, (LOANS - Henriques, W. Keane, M. Keane, Virmijl, Tunnicliffe, Cole, Lingard).

Realistically we are looking at £100 - £120 million spend with £30 - £40 million back in. But sponsors allegedly will take care of Ronaldo which would ease the pressure on us.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think fergy is right we will sign 2 first team players prob strootman and gatain

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm with you but I think Hernandez will go to Real as part of the deal for Ronaldo. We may also go back for Baines. We'll get about £25m for Rooney, £15m for Nani, £8m for Anderson, then about £5m for Macheda, Bebe and Lindergaard in total bringing in £53m.

Ronaldo would be about £45m with Hernandez included, Lewandowski about £20m, Strootman about £12m and Baines about £13m so total spend of about £90m. Therefore we would only be spending around £37m in total. If Chevy are interested in helping with Ronaldo's wages we'd have 4 excellent signings for not much money really and the first 11 would be much much stronger.

Brendan81

Agree0 Disagree0

I do completely agree and it would be good to get Baines however Buttner and Fabio will get their chances next year I imagine. I'd be happy with either scenario, don't care who doesn't think that Ronaldo will come back, it's all opinions at the end of the day!

Those who want Anderson out. He ain't leaving as long as Fergie is in charge. Brilliant player at his day and he has contributed when as been available. Yeah to many injuries bt its nt his fault. He has been unlucky, he is popular with the fans and players alike and he has resently turned 25 why would get rid of him?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Because he was 19 when we signed him and he has not progressed as expected.

I had faith for him for a long time, but for one reason or another it just hasn't happened for him. he is 25 and really should have peaked or be close to peaking. If this is it, then we should sell and get some money back to replace him with someone better

I can only presume that you are, in fact, Anderson himself

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry but this season he had his chance and he fluffed it. Not much progress at all since then and looks at his prime. I think if anything he should revamp his career somewhere else.

Danny Pughnited

Agree0 Disagree0

Dear me. no comment.
Anderson is a brilliant player, I've heard it all now.
We wanna get rid of him because he earns about 80 grand a week and plays about 10-15 games a season, half of them as a sub.
He's constantly injured and overweight and he's had six seasons at United and gradually got worse.
Is that enough reasons?

Simmo

Agree0 Disagree0

It doesn't help that when we got him he was a attacking midfielder but we only seem to play him as a deep lying midfielder, play him where he belongs for a few games then see how he does

Agree0 Disagree0

I had faith in Ando to turn things round for years but it's been too long now IMO. He doesn't contribute regularly enough to warrant his place in the squad, for whatever reason, simple as that. If we could get around £8m for him it's be well worth cashing in and finding a replacement who is actually available to play most weeks.

Still like the lad though and his playing style. Good luck to him if he does move on.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sell him without delay. He's had long enough. Weight problems, too much of the good life, injuries. Get rid.

Gds were paying arsenal in 4 staggered installments for rvp apparently, i'm over the moon he came but paying like that if its true is not exactly splashing out lol.
johndenton

-----------

John,

I deliberately didn't mention anything about money in my post as I know our limitations when it comes to that, my response down the page was to one suggesting we 'do not buy big'. It is not about how much you pay but the quality of the player. If we signed Carroll for 35 million or rvp for 24 million that doesn't mean Carroll is a better player. I know that isn't quite what you were getting at just want you to be aware I associate buying big with buying quality not expensive players.

Also to the no name below slagging me off for daring to suggest you leave a name, how can you not see that if you leave a name it helps get your point across. If you don't then your posts just get ignored or disrespected as they could easily have come from a scouser or a WUN. Most people on here are more likely to read a post from Sydney, shappy, AJH, gav etc and have a nice little rapport. Hence why the eds created the sign in.

Obviously it is up to yourself but if you just want to post banter there is 100% no reason why you wouldn't leave a name I can think of. I have hardly been 'no name police' I just respond to no names by calling them no name, how else am I meant to address you?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

United paid Arsenal in a one lump some, barring a £2m bonus which I think was dependent on whether we won the league or not. We did so AW will be rubbing his hands together.

Transfer fees are amortised over the length of a contract, so say RvP cost an initial £22m, for the purposes of the accounts it will show £5.5m leaving the club for the next four years.

Hey ED, does Januzaj play in a way similar to how Bale plays right now?

Do you see him being a similar player in the future assuming there are no injuries. {Ed004's Note - I've not seen him play before but from what Syd says he is completely different in style of play}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Januzaj can play anywhere across the front and seems to enjoy taking on his man but that's about where the similarities end. Januzaj is much more comfortable with the ball at his feet than Bale is and, IMO, is more skilfull too where as Bale very much bases his game around speed and power. Januzaj isn't developed physically yet though so when he does add a physical presence to his game he will take some stopping. Those are my thoughts on him anyway.

The closest comparison I can give is Mesut Ozil. Januzaj is a very similar type of player. He if developed properly could well become as good if not better than Ozil in the next 3-4 years.

A change of direction from the normal posts on here atm. There is lots of talk about who will be coming and who'll be going. But the youth players seem to have been overlooked when looking at it.

Now i'm not talking about the Januzaj's the Powell's and the other players of that age, but the older youth players for whom this summer will be pivotal to their future careers.

We have Amos, Thorpe, Giverin, Vermilj, Blackett, Tunnicliffe, Petrucci, Lingard, Cole, Bebe, Macheda, Cofie and Van Velzen.

Here we have 13 players some of whom may have a future at the club and some which need to move on to create space for more talented younger players and for their own careers.

Bebe, Macheda, Giverin won't make it at the club unfortunately and need to move on.

Cofie and Van Velzen are unlikely to make it and haven't progressed as much as they threatened to earlier in their careers.

Amos I think has a future as a solid understudy for De Gea with Lindegaard possibly leaving this summer.

Blackett and Vermilj are good prospects who I think will be given another year or two, maybe even go on loan.

Thorpe and Tunnicliffe I think are at a key point, Thorpe for me if he makes it will probably be a midfielder as there is too much competition in central defence.

Cole and Lingard need a loan to progress further, I think both should be kept.

Petrucci I think is the tricky one, he has the talent to be a top player but seems to be made of glass, went to Peterbourgh and was injuried within a few weeks. He can't handle the physical nature of british football. Maybe loan him out to Ajax with the view of trying to find a buyer for him in europe where he the league isn't as physical.

What do you guys think?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You missed Ekangamene who I think will be a beast, some of his tackles are brilliant but he sometimes has the knack of giving the ball away after making such a brilliant tackle, so if he can work on this aspect I think he can have a future here.
Everything else I agree with, with the exception of loaning Petrucci to Ajax, surely it would make more sense to loan him to our dutch feeder FC Twente

I think there's 8-9 on that list that won't make the grade shappy, bebe, macheda definate departures, I also don't think tunnicliffe has kicked on, blackett needs a loan, cole I don't think will make it or coffie. if we sell lindegard and bring in a n/o2 to deg hea then amos will leave, at his age he needs regular game time. thorpe has been used in defence and midfield so offers versatility so might progress?. I think we have got more probables in the u18 squad with 6-7 very talented individuals who hopefully will make the grade.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think blackett has got more time to progress than any of the others you mention shappy but he needs to go on loan next season, Since lingard has come back from leicester he looks very low on confidence and hasn't really improved from last season so I don't hold much hope for him, the same i'm afraid applies to tunners, love his passion but most of the time he just looks like a headless, angry chicken and again imo hasn't shown much sign of progress, as for petrucci, I really wanted to see him make it but unless he can keep himself injury free, others will always be in front of him, On the goalkeeper situation, I can see both amos and lindegaard leaving as I think sam johnstone has more ability than amos, whether he's ready to be number 2 yet though i'm not sure.

I left Ekangamene off as I feel he will be here for another year or two yet for him to develop.

With Lindegaard likely to leave I see Amos staying with Johnstone as third choice.

I don't think Lingard Cole or Tunnicliffe will ultimately make it, which is a shame as they are great lads.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shappy, there is absolutely no chance of our three keepers next season being DDG, Amos & Johnstone. There is no way the manager would do that. If Lindegaard is sold an experienced keeper will come in. The club will need to decide whether they go with Begovic or an experienced keeper that is willing to sit on the bench.

If Lindegaard leaves then I don't see the club spending money on someone to sit on the bench. The only way I could see us sign a keeper, is if we sign someone in their mid-late 30's to help DDG and fill in. But it would be counter productive to sign someone who would challenge for the first team spot.

DDG is first choice, I understand there being a worry about a lack of experiance if we only have DDG Amos and Johnstone but DDG is first choice at his age and will play nearly all the games. Amos can sit on the bench just in case and play a few cup games. I don't see the point in spend money on a player who will sit on the bench most of the season and who has no chance of becoming first choice.

Agree0 Disagree0

There is isn't enough experience Shaps, it won't happen my friend. You have to prepare for the worse, what if DDG gets a cruciate, Amos is not ready to become a MU number one. It will not happen Shaps.

I agree with Shappy on this one. Ben Amos is a very decent back-up keeper and Johnston is even more talented and has been brilliant on loan.

The Keans imo will be here next season and are not far off from the first team, especially Michael. I expect Will to get some time to get back from injury before beeing loaned out.

You left out Veseli though, who has been playing really well recently. He can cover CB, midfield, and both fullback positions. He needs a loan next season to the championship though.

Lingard, Cole and Tunicliffe have not done enough this season to warrant a place in the squad especially Lingard who was a major disappointment after his performances on tour.

Petrucci is one unlucky lad. His attitude is top notch and he is probably the most naturally gifted player in our youth levels, on par with the likes of Daehli, Januzaj and Powell, but it:, 's just not happening for him. This season was supposed to be a breakthrough season for him, but it just wouldn't happen for him especially with two long term injuries. I think a full season on loan in a league outside the top 5, for example in the Eredivisie or Ligas Sagros would do him a world of good and if he manages to keep improving, he can kick on and become a regular in the squad.

Blackett also had a poor season. He has bettered by James at left back, and is not that good as a centre back, but he is still 18 years old and has time on his side.

Henriquez needs another loan deal. Either championship or like Petrucci. Januzaj needs a good half a season on loan, championship or a bottom pl club, depending on how his pre season turns out. Powell should be blooded in the first team and given more games in the first half of the season, and should be shipped out on loan to a premier league club.

Michael Keane should be loaned out to Ajax, he is ready. If Fabio comes back, Vermijil shoukd be sent on loan to the championship, if not he should start guetting the occasional game filling in for Rafael.

That leaves the younger players. From the u18s, a couple of players stand out. Daehli is the first that cones to mind. Half a season at U21 level and then a loan deal to Molde or a championship club would be nice. James Wilson and Andreas Pereira, who has been having a bad season and has not progressed as expected, should stay at U18 level.

Another academy player who doesn't get mentioned often is Ben Pearson, who is crazy talented and has the exact same playing style as Paul Scholes in his early 30s ( mind the gap in quality.

I forget mentioning some of the players, Ekangamene for one. The lad is a beast, very Tiote-like and should be shipped out on loan. i'm not sure if he has enough quality on the ball to make it at the top level, but he deserves a fair chance.

Some have mentioned Tom Thorpe and say he might make it due to his versatility, but Veseli offers that same versatility with better distribution and quality on the ball.

As for Macheda, Bebe and Cofie, I think all 3 shoukd be sold. Macheda and Bebe don't need an introduction, but Cofee on the other hand. well he is big, strong and extremly powerful, in the RVN mould, but we have a lot of up and coming strikers who are simply better than him. Will Keane, Henriquez, Wilson, and even Tom Lawrence ( argubly ) are better prospects than him. Did I forget anyone?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to watch much of the U21's this season but just to echo one of your points - I've noticed Blackett has been starting on the bench regularly. I'm surprised because I was expecting him to make great strides this season, so it's a shame things have not progressed as well as we'd like. He is still young though so hopefully he takes a step in the right direction next season, see how he gets on in the U21's again then possibly a Jan loan if he shows promise.

You say Amos is not ready but imo he is no worst than Lindegaard but with more potential. So he is a better option imo.

If DDG can be trusted at his young age than an older Amos can also be given a shot in those circumstances.

Signing another goalkeeper will only serve to damage DDG confidence and waste money we don't have on players who will only be needed if DDG has a serious injury.
By that logic we need another RB because if Rafael gets injuried we only have Smalling and Jones who can play there and neither of them are as good as Rafa and they are about the same age as Amos who can't be trusted at his age to play for the first team.

We looked at other keepers earlier in the season when DDG was having a tough time and Real and Barca were apartently interested in him, I would say that it is prudent to keep an eye on other options when there is a chance you could lose a key player. Begovic is the only keeper we were really linked too and he is too good to sit on the bench but not as good as DDG imo and he would cost at least 12m. It's a total waste of money.

The only way I see us signing a keeper at all is if it is someone like Friedel who is at the end of his career and is happy to step in if DDG is injured and could pass some vital experiance onto him. But wouldn't expect to be first choice.

Other than that I expect to see DDG as first choice next season with either Lindegaard or Amos as back up.

Many people are asking cover for Evra. Shouldn't we consider and provide that responsibility to Fabio?

Rafael has improved and being the twin brother Fabio will also excel in time at LB. Thoughts? {Ed004's Note - Id play Fabio right back to cover his brother}

Buttner should be given a real chance, then there is Blackett in the youth set up. Fabio has had a lot of injuries which has set him back, and he might not be able to get that back. He seems too fragile for the British football, he keeps getting niggling injuries even at QPR. Maybe he could be kept as cover for the full back positions but I don't think he'll have a consistant enough run of games to nail down the position.

Agree0 Disagree0

Watched some of the second half of qpr and reading fabio came on as a sub with about 20 minutes to go. he made some decent runs down the right wing but some of his passing was very poor and he gave away possesion numerous times.
johndenton

Agree0 Disagree0

I would keep evra for another year and either keep him as cover whilst we try out both fabio and buttner or try out fabio and send buttner on loan to a team playing with Wong backs whom fly up and down the pitch (Wigan)

Agree0 Disagree0

Fabio as cover for his brother at right-back, and I'd buy Luke Shaw as long-term replacement for Evra. Buttner will only ever be a back-up imo.

Considering QPR are relegated now, most of the players will move out as they will not be able to afford the wages. Can anyone here think that we should look at Granero?

Is he the type of player in midfield we are looking to recruit? {Ed004's Note - No. I don't think we should be looking at any QPR player and the only player I would consider looking into signing would be Cabaye if Newcastle go down}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Although I agree with the Ed, if we were to go for a QPR player I would say Cesar as a backup to DDG. However, I don't think he would do it, and I'd prefer Begovic.

It appears that Rooney is seeking assurances over his future. First he held us to ransom over his wages, now he's wanting assurances over his future.
How about we tell him to get of his fat butt, train properly, come to pre season in reasonable shape, learn how to control a ball, build up his speed to 90% of what it was 5 years ago. And then, we might start appreciating his undoubted talents.

It is ironic that these rumours have come round and bit rooney on the backside - Fergie talked him out of leaving- gave him a new bumper contract and now he's no longer top dog.

I for one believe selling rooney would be a mistake, as on his day he is the world's best but he has some changing to do - I have never seen him so slow and lax with poor control - I can see him taking up a midfield roll but I don't know if he has the temperament and composure that carrick and scholes bring with the position.

Utd have a decision to make - cash in on him now when you can still get a decent price or hope he gets his form next season - although having rooney, RVP and lewandoski would be a steller forward line

The only trouble is McMoan has 'previous' in caving-in in this area.

Agree0 Disagree0

Giants14,

If Rooney is moved into midfield do you think he is capable of becoming one of the top midfield players in the world?

If the answer is no, then we shouldn't be offering him a new contract. I don't see any sense in paying a player £12m a year on the off chance that they might become a top class midfielder. Keeping Rooney only makes sense if he gets his act together, gets himself in shape, and if we don't sign Lewandowski. On his day, when he actually behaves like a professional athlete, he is an excellent forward. But if we sign another top class forward then Rooney needs to be sold. As a midfielder he isn't worth anything close to £200,000 a week.

Good post and good points.

Personnally I don't know if Rooney will be a top midfielder, seeing him a couple of times in that position this season I would say no but can he adapt?
I do believe this could have been Fergie's plan all along to play Rooney in a deeper position and role.
His long passing is second to none - he has the pass and the vision to suit the role but his general play, control/touch and discipline to play in midfield is up for major debate - a lot of people are praised him for the passing and controlling the game in midfield specially in the Stoke game but he did give the ball away a lot as well - his discipline on the ball and awareness needs to improve for midfield role - as a forward giving the ball away doesn't have an awful impact but giving the ball away in midfield can be costly, that's why Carrick is so good, he gets the team moving and sets the tempo - one thing I don't thing rooney can do at this moment in time.
Saying that he has played forward for his entire career, saying he can't play there from now is impossible cause only time will tell.

I would be surprised if we bring in Lewy and a forward doesn't leave, if this happens I see rooney dropping into midfield

Hernandez maybe but I think Welbeck is evolving into a different type of player so he wouldn't be competing with other strikers for a place in the team.
