If DDG does leave in the summer I'd totally be against going out and blowing 60 million on a keeper.
2 reasons:
1) Dean Henderson, currently on loan at Sheffield United and looking outstanding.
2) Joel Pereria another top young keeper.

Surely it would be better for us to give one of those two a chance rather than waste money that is needed in other areas?

Caolán.

Have to disagree, Caolan. People seem to think a goalie is just an add-on. But no top team, with serious ambitions to win trophies, can do so without a top keeper. Both guys you mentioned have shown potential, but that's all it is so far. I'd be looking at someone playing in a top league, maybe 30 year old or over, that won't hinder the long-term progression of our young keepers. They'll not be reaching their peaks until well into their late 20's anyway. I'd even look at taking Kasper Schmeichel for a couple of years.

I can see where you’re coming from but for me a top keeper is equally as important as a top striker. If he goes we need a top replacement, especially when our defence is so shaky at present.

My thinking was that with Romero he could be used to steady the ship, and spend the money on improving the defence (obviously that’s if it’s not sorted in Jan) .

In an ideal world De Gea stays and signs a new 5 year deal. But I’m just thinking we have some quality coming through and it would be nice to see the academy produce a top keeper!

Romero would be a decent replacement but if we are talking DDG quality then we will be looking forever, there isn’t anyone of his quality, Oblak would be the one I’d go for.

I think Romero is a very good replacement. Better to fix the back four and have less need for a world class keeper.

My instant reaction to caolan's post was to agree; but after thinking the club needs a top class solid keeper as the foundation for defence. Hark back to the strife after schmiechel went and before van de sar! we already have a defense issue so would rather get the keeper situation sorted rather than make it worse. Regarding DDG I would let him go if he wants to; every window for the last few years we have the same tripe rolled out, granted media click led, but there must be interest on his part to leave. Cash in and move on - I think it was ed002 who staed that players will come and go and that is something everyone has to accept.

Of course we want world class players in every position but we have so many positions needing better players so we have to prioritise.

I'd say we need top CB, RW and two midfielders first and could probably manage with the other keepers we have if DDG leaves.

I think that goalkeeper is one of the most important positions on the pitch but we can come back to it once we've sorted these other areas first.

Is DDG the best keeper in the world? Probably.

So if he leaves, whoever we sign will be a step backwards no matter how many millions we throw at it.

The problem is that most of the keepers who come close to or on occasion challenge DDG for the title of best Goalkeeper in the world are already at clubs which make them unobtainable.
Neuer at Bayern, Ederson at City, Allison at Liverpool ect. The ones who might be obtainable such as Oblak or Donnarumma will cost close to 100m in the current market.

So the question should be, do we spend the best part of 100m to ultimately be a weaker team than we are now?

For me Romero is one of the top 5-6 keepers in the EPL. (DDG, Ederson, Allison and Lloris are the only ones I would say are better than him. Even Lloris has looked shakey of late.

So I would not replace DDG if he was to leave. Especially as we have two of the best young goalkeepers in the world in Joel Pereira and Dean Henderson.

I agree Shappy, we need to have a plan to bring Pereira or Henderson through if we have any fear that DDG leaves. If that means Romero for a year or so then I am happy with that as think he is better than people think. Can have a ticket but on the whole a good keeper.

We bought a very young De Gea and threw him straight in why couldn't we do the same with a young Henderson or Pereira, sure we had Vidic and Ferdinand in front of him then but the we all agree we need top centre backs too. Though for me I'd break the bank to keep ddg but he may want to leave to win titles and were far from that.

{Ed002's Note - It is to do with the quality and maturity of the goalkeeper - they are not all the same.}

Dave was already a first-team regular in a top Spanish side when we bought him. Henderson is playing at Sheffield Utd, and Joel is at Vitória. There's a reason for that.

Hello all, haven't posted in ages but regularly check the pages. Hope everyone is well. With the window fast approaching what are people opinions on the board backing Jose? Should they? Do they have to looked at our current state? Or do they wait until Jose ultimately gets the push and wait for his replacement? I personally feel there will be signings but not typical Jose signings. I feel they will back him for younger targets with sell on value knowing if he leaves the new manager still may want/ be able to utilise the players. People like Pulisic, Ake, rather than Godin and Perisic. (Those are only examples before you shoot me down)! . This seems like a sensible approach to me. What are people's thoughts?

RIR. I've no idea what will happen. Jan is not the best time to buy.
We need better players but we also need players that a new coach can run with in case jose goes to madrid in the summer .
All we can do is wait and see, either way any new coach has to get a much better squad or he will go the same way as moyes lvg and jose. Nobody could win a league with what we have. We finished 2nd last seadon and that flattered the players at the coaches disposal.

When everyone is sticking the boot into Mourinho, have a read of what Ed02 said on the rumours page. Basically the club are looking again at a Roma midfield player who has “been on the list since last January but he was well down the list of options available although remained of interest - but as the club have failed to sign who Mr Mourinho has wanted he is again an option”. I read that a few times to let it sink in.

Is Woodward supporting the manager if that is our plan? We cannot expect to get back to the top of anything if the club do not buy the right players, nor can we properly judge the manager if they don’t support him. Like Gary Neville said who is making these decisions? Who has or thinks they have more knowledge than the manager? If we buy on the cheap it just won’t work unless there is a great scouting network, who really thinks we have that? If the club don’t believe the manager is looking at the right players then sack him, get a dummy in who will try to work with what he is given before falling on his sword in 12 to 18 months. I have wondered before if the club were not buying the managers first choice. We shouldn’t buy for buying sake.

I doubt many clubs these days simply buy whoever the manager wants. Jose has eluded to that a couple of times already. I think Liverpool have a recruitment team who collectively select players. I’m sure the Ed’s will know more.

If they aren’t going to back him then they might aswell sack him. If they are backing him just to let him leave in the summer then it’s a waste of money for me, they need to let Jose see out his contract and back him all the way or if there are no incomings I think the writing will be on the wall.
