I think that SAF maybe thinking of a new style of formation for us, a more fluid one which Rooney spearheads. With Berbatov, Diouf, Owen and maybe even Macheda all potentially leaving Rooney could start up top on his own essentially with a man behind him. I think this tactic is reflected in how SAF acted over Summer, he went for Sneijder, Ozil amongst others, all of which play in the whole behind the striker. Rooney we know, if he plays as a proper striker will bag 30+ a season - there is your goalscorer. Fergie will be going for fluid, multi talented players who can play in mulitple positions. Someone like Ozil would be ideal, but I think Gotze would be ideal too - mainly because he can play in the hole, cm, or on the wings. That means that he could play behind Rooney - and also play on the left or right or simply left out if we play Rooney in the whole of Welbeck.

Rooney is a top striker and we should get the most out of him in my opinion. That would leave us with a fron four essentially or Rooney, Nani, Young and one other (Sneijder, Ozil, Gotze, Gaitan take your pick of whatever name you want).

Behind this front four we would need a bit of stability, Carrick and Fletche would provide this if one of them plays alongside Cleverly who would link up the deep lying DM with the AM playing inbetween the two linking the play and spotting the starting passes. Carrick is good enough to get the ball to Cleverly and start of a move.

In this sense we would only need the one palyer, this would mean we could splash out on one ideal player and not worry about having to spend on two players for CM etc.

The requests for Evra to are bad i think, support him please, he's always stand in captain and he's that for a reason. SAF wont ditch him just because of a bad patch - it looks as though he is coming out of it anyway. As is Evans - an excellent 5th choice center back who can play LB too - our new John O'Shea in my eyes. We're well stocked in the rest of the pitch, although maybe one more versatile full back wouldnt go a miss for cover as we always seem to have injuries to Fabio and Rafael, Evra's not always fit and neither is Smalling. Someone like Pereira from Sporting would be good, or the likes of Cristico would do a job. Even bring back Danny Simpson dare i say it.

So thats my plan, have about 4 strikes with Wazza, Chicha, Welbeck and Macheda with an AM playing behind Rooney in most games and in some games play two up top when necessary and get a bit of rotation. I guess a good shout would be Van der Vaart for that role as he wouldnt play every game and he is on modest wages - but he is a moaner and disruptive so probably not. I hope the Gotze rumorus are real and we move for him (and Iturbe in the future).

EDS do you know if England could lose a champions league spot soon? as Italy lost 1 this year and with UEFA wanting more countries represented in the UCL? {Ed001's Note - Italy lost one because of their coefficient.}

Would we want Rooney to play as a striker and score 30 or 40 a season, with Ozil behind him and Nani and Young left and right? It'd work brilliantly i think, Carrick and Cleverly in cm then drop Carrick for a player like MvILLA.

Players when they get to 18 or 19 in the reserves should be showing something more than that level. They should be pushing for the next level. Now I watched Ravel come on and you can see he has something. However Pogba either isnt putting it in or his development has slowed. That isnt to say he cant make it but for me there isnt the startling extra level I would expect at that level. Maybe he has been got at and his agent is playing games however what he is displaying at the minute doesnt say first team for me. Ravel on the other hand when fit is showing it.

Time will tell but is Pogba really pushing a first team place?

I have a good feeling about a deal for Ozil, i think he could play in a midfield four and he would give us frightening ability in midfield combined with Young and Nani. He could play wide left too - probably though we could do with M'Vila to play along side him for cover.

I think after the manchester derby, fergy has to put faith in players like pogba and morrison and give them a regular place. sure it may be a risk, but when you look at our current crop of centre mids you have to admit, they are not worthy of getting into a top 8 premier league side, nevermind Manchester united's side. Carrick is to slow and hasn't got the united edg. Ando is lazy, overweight, lacks the grit and desire we need and Fletch is decent a great squad player, someone every top team needs, but is not a match winner. Sure it will be a risk playing pogba and morrison, but whats the worst that can happen they don't play well, we then make do with what we got and buy in january, but what if they take to it like duck to water and give us that edge, that could be the difference between us winning trophies and losing them. Correct me if i'm wrong, but after the city game haven't we got easy games until january. i know a games not easy until you've got the three points, but there hardly games that keep you up at night! what does everybody think?

aaallj5 {Ed004's Note - I think it would be a disaster. Two youngsters in the middle of the park vs 5 full international midfielders in the City team. They will not be able to handle the movement of Silva, Nasri, Aguero, Johnson, Yaya moving around. They also lack the physical strength to cope as well. Yaya would just run through them. I also think you are being harsh on Anderson and Fletcher. They would be bossed around and would not have the experience to cope with the pressure imo.}

I think people are getting their hopes up that the return of Cleverly will miraculously transform us back into the team that played at start the season. I don't know if he will.
Nearly everyone was dismayed that SAF did not improve the CM position in the summer, I still am.
Giggs is past it. He is a legend, but he is not good enough now.
Park is not, and never has been good enough.
Carrick, SAF puts him in the middle to do a specific job, SAF should buy someone else who can do it properly.
Anderson, useless, fat, t**t. I'm disgusted with his attitude on Tueday. He was disgraceful. I guarantee if Roy Keane was on the pitch he would have tore Ando to shreds for not putting in any effort to help his team-mates.
Fletcher, great squad player to have. I hope his absence for so long has no long-term affect.
Valencia/Nani/Young. A winger is a winger.
Cleverly, all our hopes are resting on this young man's shoulders. This is too much to expect from someone with so little experience. I hope I am wrong though.

A great player is someone who is great when his team-mates are having an off-day. Unfortunately we have nobody like this. We need a central midfielder who will take a game by the scruff of the neck and kick as many a***s as needs be. Will Jones grow into this person? Will Pogba or Tunnicliffe become this player?

Sorry for the rant.

J Bones.

This needs to happen & perhaps will happen (but may be not all) before September 1,2012. Departure of Berbatov, Gibson & Kuzsack will happen. Also the possibility of Evra & 1 of Carrick or Fletcher or even both leaving is high. Also I wud love to see Evans leave. Thiago Alcantara sud & cud be bought. Ricky Van Wolfskin also will be bought. Also Evra will be replaced by either Baines or A.Pereira. Carrick & Fletcher won't need replacing as there are youngsters like Pogba & Tunnicliffe. Also Owen may leave or retire. The replacement for Schloes will be one of Goetze, Eriksen, Montilivo or Moutinho. Wat do u think eds, guys! Ed plz post it.....

i dont think it has been any coincidence that our performance has dropped off since cleverly got injured he gave us something off what we are missing. But lets be honest he is still starting out and improving , if he can make such a difference then imagine what a worldclass player alongside him could do.
anderson fletch and carrick are all good players but are they good enough for united or barce and madrid for that matter. I've always been a fan of carrick but maybe the game has moved on and you need to be a bit more dynamic now, fletch will always do a good job and give you 100% but i'm not sure anderson is good enough to be the man to pull the strings for a team like united.
yes we are picking up points and yes we won the league last year but for teams like united sometimes how you win is as important as winning

Completely agree with what 'Red Man' said yesterday. We have some great youth midfielders coming through and in a couple of years time we will have some of the best, young central midfielders in Europe, but for the next couple of years we need a leader, someone they can look up to and learn from. In the summer SAF believed this player was Sneijder, he was 27, already at the peak and would play here for 3-4 years until the youth were no longer "youth". That deal fell through, we all know roughly why that is, but lets not get into that. So the question remains, who will we try to bring in next? Or will SAF have other ideas now? IMO we need a central midfielder who can both defend and attack, who can pick out key passes and will be able to dictate games. I can only think of three ideal candidates.

1) Bastian Schweinsteiger, great player, same age group as Sneijder, but highly unlikely to be available. Bayern are a wealthy club and Bastian is happy at the club. Would also command a fee of over £30m.

2) Javi Martinez, probably my favourite for the position, solid defensively, can score goals, but wouldn't come cheap. Probably cost £30m+ too. But he does fit the profile perfectly and he has age on his side.

3) Moussa Sissoko, another player that would fit like a glove. Can defend, can attack and he is just 22. Would come pretty cheap too, probably in the region of £15m-£20m.

There are of course one or two others, but they do not fit the profile enough IMO. M'Vila is very good defensively, but will not offer much in attack, perhaps a little young too. Rodwell could offer both attack & defense, but again perhaps a little too young to be a leader per se. But SAF is in-charge and we all know how unpredictable he can be. I guess we will have to trust him to get it right, and lets be honest, he does get it right 9/10.
