So Lvg has got us all really intrigued with these comments regarding a incoming striker. Obviously I have no idea who it is. I do think it's a player that can play wide and through the middle. This suits the playing style and means the team will be flexible all of which Lvg craves.

In my opinion it's not a Cavani/Higuain/Benzema it's a Pedro/Aumbameyang/Reus type player.

I don't see Ronaldo returning as much as people want it.

A forward that scores 20 goals in the season along with a top notch centre half will really make the squad very solid and give us the balance that lvg spoke about.

A few of the papers are saying lacazette is the mystery striker we are trying to get is he a wide forward tho I thought he was out n out striker

Believable0 Unbelievable1

21 Jul 2015 22:52:15
He started life wide right, he can play across the front line

21 Jul 2015 22:18:28
Pure conedy gold to see LVG whack the backsides of the medias and ITK this summer. He has been whipping them and spinning them around catching their tails. Everyone focused on what United are doing. Meanwhile I went to the liverpool banter page to post how 'they had been enjoying United linked with great players and them pulling off sensational first-time bid winners for the Bentekes and Milners' it didn't get posted! 😂😂

Believable1 Unbelievable2

Little surprised we are playing the same teams as last week in tonight's match.

I would have liked to see a midfield 3 of Carrick Herrera and Schneiderlein

Believable0 Unbelievable0

21 Jul 2015 21:50:55
My shout for mystery striker is. Theo Walcott, very quick can play on the right if needed and knows where the goal is.Better up front in my opinion shows good movement and a very good finisher.

So along with everyone else on here, and I appreciate it's hardly an original post, LVG has got me guessing who this surprise signing will be. I fail to see how it's going to be someone not already linked unless of course we're all going to be incredibly disappointed over the next week or so.

Looking through various media outlets reveals very little other than pure speculation. Something a little more concrete, in my opinion, is the odds on each player joining a certain side. After all you'd hazard a guess that anyone in the know would attempt to financially benefit from their knowledge.

After looking at the odds on a couple of sites and converting them into a probability percentage it reveals that the most likely attacking target is Pedro Rodriguez (65%)

This would make sense given that Rooney is to be employed as the central striker and ADM could be leaving for pastures new.

After that you're looking at Gaitan and Edinson Cavani. They're both pretty close. Outside of that both Thomas Muller and Zlatan Ibrahimovich also come in close together. Bale and Lewandowski both come in with the same odds.

I genuinely think it's one of the above names. It's definitely worth watching the markets to see where the money goes. If I was to have a punt I'd go for Muller.

Believable0 Unbelievable4

21 Jul 2015 23:05:45
In my opinion markets are manipulated either by made up media bullsh1t or purposefully by sites that want naive gamblers to see odds shortening and to jump on as someone must know something.

Put simply, and if the markets are working properly, just think how many people know nothing verses how many people are genuinely in the know.

This site is about as in the know as you can be for on a public forum. And we don't really have a clue.

My advice is keep your money in your pocket and sit back and wait, and enjoy the odd guess and ludicrous suggestion of course ;)

Agree3 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 21:32:04
With LVG saying the incoming striker hasn't been mentioned in the media yet, I wouldn't be surprised if we went for s player like Morata who would be a good signing in my opinion. A work class cb then we will be looking strong enough to a mount a serious title challenge.

Romero isn't good enough to be #1, Cillisen, i'll admit haven't seen much of him, but worries me. Few here, including moon who is a teachers pet and does his homework ;) seem to think he's the real deal.

Hi Guys

With all the suggestions of who the surprise striker might be.Now LvG has said its not one that the press have written about. Now a lot of you have come up with names. So here's one that I don't believe has been mentioned. He must be good because a certain North West club paid a lot of money for him and have a history of buying superstars.
Ladies and gentlemen I give you :

Rickie Lambert lol.

Any of the older posters remember when Ed002 said we was looking at Abdul Waris. Obviously she's not around to verify it nor would l ask for fear of being sharted out in the shape of a porcupine but my point is.

1 The media have never linked us(recently speaking).

2 He could play 2nd fiddle to Rooney

Just throwing this one out there as it's been at the back of my mind all day.

21 Jul 2015 19:23:59
Hi All,

I read this site multiple times a day and post on the odd occasion.

I've been a united fan for decades, I'm a season ticket holder and fortunately I've had executive facilities for a number of years (evolution suite, table 44) and I've chatted to every legend that the club employ on match day.

During August and January I've always asked about signings, none seem to know what's in the pipeline (unless it's a blag) but I've met Paddy Mac, big Norm, Sammy Mc (best bloke ever), the ex Pro's know naff all.

its got to be someone who is happy to be on the bench a lot or can play as a wide striker/winger

Really hope this "surprise" striker signing isn't a let down. I hope we're not signing an old and past it player. I hear the odd person mention huntelaar etc. really hope not. If it's a player like this is of just rather kept van persie to be honest! Here's hoping lvg is being sneaky and its Lewandowski

Believable4 Unbelievable0

21 Jul 2015 18:43:24
Lewandowski or Muller would be my choices to be honest I don't think either will happen. Aguero would be dream choice and Kane a good choice too but we will see.

I don't think the big signing will be a forward.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 16:54:42
So LVGs comments really have wet everyones appetite. I just hope that this striker hasn't been linked because he isn't a top name.

I also think that it is someone who is equally comfortable playing wide than upfront. Certain names can be discounted: Cavani, Benzema, Bale and Muller. Pedro probably can be discounted too as LVG said we hadn't been linked with this player yet.

I am going to shout out the two names who I think it could be: Reus or Ronaldo.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

21 Jul 2015 17:19:34
I think lvg as done what he has set out to do and make journalists/fans go crazy if their is a striker coming in I'd imagine that he will be one we've been linked with regardless of what lvg has said.

My guess would be either pedro/lewandowski.

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 15:44:04
Mystery striker, i am going to go for Ronaldo, i know i know, done to death but here's why i think it may be him, he has had a falling out with Perez apparantly and to add to it Benitez said last week that he wanted to build a team around Bale, Ron can't have liked that one, last season he did not look too happy at all at times.

What a good start to the Adidas deal than to have Ronaldo the first signing holding the new United shirt, if there was a time for him to come home it would be now.

Believable0 Unbelievable5

21 Jul 2015 16:38:33
If there was any influence on transfers by shirt sponsors / suppliers , I am sure Adidas wouldn't chose the face of Nike for publicity.

Not saying we wouldn't sign Ronaldo ( but I don't think we will ) , just saying that if we did it wouldn't have anything to do with Adidas.

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 17:10:37
I don't think it will be Ronaldo unfortunately.

Agree0 Disagree1

21 Jul 2015 17:16:14
Wasn't implying that Adidas would have anything to do with it only that he would be the first to be paraded in the new shirt.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 17:17:20
Zlatan.

Agree1 Disagree3

21 Jul 2015 18:10:23
I've seen a few posts suggesting that Adidas wouldn't want Ronaldo signed because he's signed up with Nike - but don't see the logic behind it. If anything, I imagine that Ronaldo is signed with Nike gives Adidas more incentive to see him in a United shirt.

Sponsoring Ronaldo would cost Adidas £15m+ a year. but if he signs for United they get him wearing Adidas kits and tracksuits for the next five years without spending a penny. Player lead adverts are great for Adidas and Nike - but 90% of a players visibility is on the pitch.

I'm not saying that I expect Ronaldo to be signed for that reason (nor do I think that our kit manufacturer has any say over our transfer policy) - but Ronaldo to United would be fantastic for Adidas!

Agree3 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 19:55:02
Is real madrids kit not adidas ?

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 20:46:27
I have a feeling it could be Ronaldo and the no 7 shirt will be available when Adm moves to psg

Nach73 stole my thunder

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 21:24:53
Bale i would think as a late blockbuster deal. Ronaldo is never going to leave madrid and they will never let him go as they will be crazy to do so. %0 gaols a season is impossible to replace and bale will not score that many as he has injury issues every year.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 21:57:41
I find it quite interesting that Ronaldo has supposedly sold his image rights to a third party and wonder whether this might be a way of protecting them if he moves to a new club. Benitez has made his intention to build around Bale pretty clear and as there seems to be a lot of friction between him and Ronaldo already - I can't see Ronaldo wanting to play second fiddle. Add to that his age (last big move for him and last chance for RM to recoup big money), the fact that Real Madrid want something of ours (DDG) and our need for a player who can play both centrally and out wide - and Ronaldo moving back to Manchester makes quite a bit of sense.

I don't expect it to happen - but wouldn't be at all surprised if it did.

OK, time or next seasons predictions competition.

Use the link at the bottom of this post and fill in the boxes. We need the top 6 in order, bottom 3 in order, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League winner and EPL top scorer (just EPL games).

Don't send your entries here, just via the link below. However, YOU CAN ONLY ENER ONCE AND CAN'T CHANGE YOUR ENTRY. So, you might want to wait until more signings have happened.

The sheet will close down the Friday before our 1st game; I'll repost the link a couple of times between now and then.

Here's the link (I've removed the prefix as it has been spammed a couple of times. Its the usual 4letters followed by colon and double back slash.

How about Zlatan up front?
He would scare the tripe out of EPL defenses and always brings goals. I know he is bit old but would be nice for a season until we get our real target CR7 next year.
Personally I think it could work.
Lacazette and Mario Gomez could be outside bets.

Now we use to hear from sir alex that any player signed by the club was scouted extensively beforehand not only there skills on the pitch but also off the pitch to make sure they would fit in to the man utd family and the ethos of the club etc and we also heard something similar from lvg about fitting in to his philosophy etc then why would sir alex sign powell if it was known he had a bad attitude or why would lvg sign di maria if it was clear that he was only moving for the money?. does lvg have the final say of transfers? taught's fellow posters cheers!!

just a shout and would be good for a couple of years and wouldn't of thought he would play every game . not an out and out striker but he will get goals form either the left or the right inside forward role .

Arjen Robben . ! they signed Costa to replace him maybe ?

Others we could go for .

Adem ljajic

Bernard

Konoplyanka

Andriy Yarmolenko

Wellington Nem

Hulk

or a Striker that will replace Rooney in a few years, might be a little to early for him to join now at 18 but he would get some game time . but for me he's way to young but i would snap him up now and loan him back out to santos maybe, maybe he could be instant hit .

Quick post on LvG's defensive options.

He says that Chris (Mike) Smalling is his 3rd choice captain, so i can see him starting a lot of games, plus the fact he had a fantastic second half to the season helped.

So my guessing is we buy a left footed CB to partner him (maybe not otamendi as he is right footed) with Jones and Rojo being back ups.

So who is this CB we will buy. Do not be surprised if Otamendi doesn't come in, same with Ramos. It is clear that the Media are clueless and have as much knowledge on MU transfers as me. So for sheer fun, here is a list of top left footed CB's that could be available:

Cheillini
Dante
Vertonghan
Badstuber
Inigo Martinez

Bloody hell LVG has us all wrapped around his finger doesn't he, any little comment and you jump all over it. All he meant was 'it's not Muller' because that is who we were linked with yesterday. He didn't say it was someone that had never been in the media at all, and even if he did, that would mean nothing, he said it to make this happen!

Ed001 , I think the beginning of the end started a long time ago now. I feel old just reading some of the threads on here. I remember a time when football teams wore the numbers 1 to 11 , and football boots were black!!

That is when the game started going down hill , when boots started becoming blue or red or yellow. Christ , I even see some wearing pink boots now. what's that all about?

I don't wish to start another Rooney debate because it has been done to death. But reading his comments about playing up front is all well and good as long as he stays there. CF is his best position , no doubt. And his ability is not in question.

However , we all know that Rooney wants to be everything to everyone on the pitch , a Roy Of The Rovers, if you like. He plays like he wants to do everything himself , almost as if he doesn't trust his team mates to do their jobs properly. To be fair , he has probably been justified in that view at times , especially with a poor midfield behind him.

Now , no longer has that problem. There is no longer any reason for Rooney to not "trust" those behind him. I really hope Rooney , and the manager can see that and playing as a proper CF , we will see a much more effective player than we have recently.

Rooney in and around the box , and scoring goals. No more taking every corner , or free kicks 40 yards from goal.
Show some discipline , play where he is meant to play and be there ready to take the chances when they come. Playing on the shoulder of the last defender , and making those runs behind the defence.

If Rooney can do that , we might just see the player that we all want him to be , instead of the Roy Of The Rovers that he tries to be.

my best position, and I have always said it, is as a striker, getting into the box,”
“And the two seasons I have really done that as a lone striker have been my two best goalscoring seasons. It is where the manager and myself see my best position.

“Hopefully I can get a good run of games and repay the manager and score goals for the team, but it is obviously on me to do that.

"I have no doubts that I can score 20 goals or more again and I am ready to take on that mantle and be the one who gets the goals for this team.

"If I play up there again this season, then I can get the goals. It is where I like and it is where I will play.”

He added: “I have played different roles over the years for United, but you only have to look when I play for England as a striker, I score goals,”

“I hope to score 20 or more goals again this season. If I am playing as a striker, I will be disappointed if I cannot that do that. The last time I really played the full season as a striker was 2011-12. All the other seasons, I have been up front, then in midfield or out wide, so hopefully if I will stay up front. But I don’t think I have sacrificed myself too much over the years."

For the fear of being shot down. Would anyone think it could be Ronaldo?

We have been linked with literally every CF in the world and LVG says "The Striker" is not one the media have written about.

This is the only summer since he left that we haven't been heavily linked with him, does silence speak volumes. Couple that with what Paddy Crerand said and something "big" could be in the offing.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

21 Jul 2015 09:18:58
Ronaldo is the best player on the planet and adding him to the squad would guarantee atleast 25-30 goals for 2 seasons.
He is very very fit unlike Kaka or RVP and I can see him play in the top leagues until 35.
He also sold some of his rights (not sure?) to Peter Lim's company. Something fishy is up there.
I could see Madrid drop to 3rd or maybe 4th place if Ronaldo leaves him, he almost carried the team on his shoulders.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - very fit? Is this as in you find him attractive fit? Or as in you are ignoring the knee problem that limits his mobility and could well lead to him retiring early? I personally think he will head to the MLS in a couple of years to head into semi-retirement, once he has set a few goalscoring records. He is very keen on making himself better known in the US.}

Agree0 Disagree1

21 Jul 2015 09:40:47
I was only talking about this rumour last night with my Dad. Supposedly he is having problems with Real about his image rights?

While it would be great to have Ronaldo back, would it really be worth it?

He would cost a fortune in fee and wages, and at 30 we would only get a few years out of him before he is off to the MLS.

For my money, I would prefer Mullar or Bale, maybe Reus(?). Considering their ages, we would get longer out of them, and we might even get some money should they decide to leave for one last pay day.

Of course if Ronaldo does return,, happy days!

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 09:50:48

21 Jul 2015 10:10:06
It would clearly be worth it. As fans we shouldn't concern ourselves with how much we pay for someone (providing the club can afford it).

Reus or Ronaldo are the two players that would fit into the system that haven't really been linked so I am guessing at one of those.

You don't think this mystery striker could be huntelaar do you ? I know he's old but would be more than happy to sit on the bench and has experience

i'm not saying he's what we need, just trying to think outside of the box

Huntelaar is better than both Wilson and hernandez I know he's getting on a bit he's 31 but Wilson could learn a lot off him he's goal scoring record is pretty impressive he's scored in 1 in every 2 games for schalke we were all moaning when LVG said he was going with what we had up front I hope it's a big name striker were getting but I just can't see it so I think huntelaar is a shrewd option he will get at least 15-20;goals from off the bench add that to if we get pedro who I think will get at least 10 goals if we sign him and hopefully rooney getting 20-30 goals that would be a good return from our forwards which would hfully take us close to the title

Lets hope we get a striker who thinks inside the box or this could be a disaster ;)

Lol gds2. I don't think it's going to be any "in their prime" superstar due to being benched a lot. As nach73 said he'll score a lot from the bench

Odd comments from LVG about Darmian suggesting he has been bought as back up to Valencia. Have we really bought Italy's right back to sit on the bench? Particularly when Valencia is not and will never be a RB?

21 Jul 2015 08:00:38
I think LVG says random things like this just to try and motivate the players to fight for their place. Even if for the first few games Valencia plays Darmian will end up being first choice.

21 Jul 2015 09:04:56
AJH,

I have a feeling this was lost in translation to be honest, he said before the last game that he wants 2 players in each position so players are fighting for their place and that Darmian will be fighting for the right back spot with Valencia, I think he just meant he has brought him in as a 2nd right back, as in Valencia is the 1st because he was already here. You can tell the press conference didn't give much away when this is the story the press are leading with!

Agree2 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 07:07:25
So LVG has made two interesting comments in his latest press conference. 1) striker in process but not who papers are talking about 2) Mr Ramos could also be a process.
.Oh also the he is not good at names referring to Chris Smalling Mike Smalling.

Just thought I would offer my opinion on the striker situation. Firstly I think Rooney Is good enough to play the lone strikers role. Yes he had a poor season last year, but he was played out of position for much of it, for various reasons, such as accommodating RVP and Falcao, and the obvious lack of midfielders. Anyway he's still got pace, raw power and is capable of not only creating chances on his own, but has fantastic link up play as well, and is a very intelligent forward. Yes his first touch isn't great, but his overall reading of the game makes up for that, and under LVGs philosophy he's adapted his game to stay further up the pitch more, and rarely tracks back and gets stuck in, unless the teams struggling to retain possession. So now we have a much more creative midfield I expect (as long as he stays fit which with Rooney has rarely been a problem) I expect him to go back to being a 20 goal+ striker.

Cavani- I've never seen the hype, yes he's scored lots of goals but in a lesser league, and whenever he's played for Uruguay he has never impressed me, and I personally wouldn't take the chance on him, especially at the money being quoted.

Muller- Not going to happen Imo. I Seriously doubt Munich would allow their 2 most high profile German players to leave in the same season to the same club. It would really upset the fans.

Lewandowski- Yes world class and yes possibly available, but where does that leave our captain? Who would be benched a 40 million+ signing or our captain? I personally don't see it happening either.

Pedro- Torn on this one, yes he has shown glimpses of his ability in the past, and has fantastic pace, but I just don't see him being cut out for the premier league. However we are lacking a right winger, and he can't be as ineffective as Valencia or Young when playing in that position. So perhaps for the money being quoted he might be worth a gamble.

So in conclusion out of the players being linked to us, I would say the most likely is Pedro, especially if Di Maria is to move on which is looking quite likely at the moment, and we will use Depay, Hernandez, Wilson and perhaps Januzaj as strikers if Rooney is injured or needs a rest.

On a side note I think we are going to get another season out of De Gea as Real have appeared to have resorted to "plan b" on the goalkeeper front, so i'm really hoping we keep him.

We all revered SAF yet when given the opportunity he didn't make Rooney his main forward, he brought in RVP , very likely because Rooneys effectiveness has decreased over recent years. Rooney does not seem to be able to create space when tightly marked, nor burst past defenders or score consistently at any time in his career, he scores in bursts. One of the criticisms I recall from SAF was his scoring bursts but I also note he makes elementary mistakes at key times.

If the surprise is Pedro and Rooney is our main striker this season we will be looking at 3rd or 4th at best and sorry but I will be disappointed with LvG at that outcome. We must supplement our goal scoring substantially

21 Jul 2015 06:50:06
I see you point redman, but LVG certainly sees something in him, and Rooney has certainly adapted his style this last year, and I disagree he can't lose his man anymore, as I still think his best quality is his intelligent movement. I think our main problem the last few seasons has been chance creation, and the strikers have been starved of service. I really don't see another striker coming in this window, perhaps i'm wrong but we've even got Fellaini still to accomodate, who I failed to mention, who was arguably our best performer last year, and I doubt LVG will sell him as he could be a huge asset in CL games, I mean just think of Fellaini vs the Barca defence, Mascherano and Puyol would poo their little pants.

Agree2 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - thanks for that, I just spat my tea all over my screen on reading the word 'intelligent' in connection with the word Rooney!}

21 Jul 2015 10:31:27
Jase

Rooneys main attribute is his enthusiasm and effort. Too many times I have seen him miss control balls to spurn chances. When he is in form he will score but as I keep saying that is in bursts and SAF said the same. Rooney loses his man by dropping deep but if the defender doesn't come out it achieves little other than Rooney getting involved in the middle usually trying to spray balls wide.

I thought Puyol had retired so guess you mean Pique? We will be unlikely to play against Barca very often and PL defences know Fellaini will give too many fouls away against most teams, always has and always will particularly against clever defenders.

There was a thread low down on the page about this but it's quite old so I thought I'd make a new one and add my two cents.

Those saying Ronaldo with play at his top level until he is 35 clearly haven't watched much of Ronaldo last season. He has already dropped off from his peak, he's still a goal machine but only because Real Madrid cater their game towards him. Most of his goals are now tap ins ans penalties and what also doesn't help is he has a problem with his knee that has slowed him down physically which has clearly restricted his ability to beat players. This has forced him inside more and because his close control isn't that good he has struggled to impose himself in the bigger games. Now before anyone shoots me down and points to his stats, anyone who watched a decent amount of Madrid last season would agree with me.

Next season will see a big change in the way Real Madrid play which will expose Ronaldo's flaws even more. Perez and Benitez clearly favour Bale and are planning for the future with Bale at the centre of everything.

This will mean two things, the first is Real Madrid will cater to Bale next season which will show everyone how much Ronaldo's game has dropped and second, Bale will have a fantastic season at the centre of everything which means everyone needs to stop with the ridiculous rumours linking him to us!

21 Jul 2015 02:03:44
If scoring 60 goals is dropping off, then you're on something man. He doesn't need to beat players anymore. He will get the service and bang it in. He doesn't need to run any more. If you think anyone else will hit those numbers if played in his position, then you're joking mate. And, if it were easy scoring inside the box goals, then everyone would be doing it and we would be having 50+ strikers everywhere. Many top teams have great midfields which provide ample service. But you don't hear those numbers. People watch Messi too much to get blinded by the qualities Ronaldo has. He may not have a magnet in his feet but he will put the ball inside the net. That's for sure. When there is Ronaldo in the team, its only logical to have the team concentrate the play on him. Personally, I would love to see Bale behind Ronaldo. That will be terrific.

21 Jul 2015 03:13:35
I agree that he's not the player he was physically, in fact he started losing his pace a few years ago, however this happens to all players, and the best ones adapt their play accordingly, which is obviously what Ronaldo has done. However I agree with the general theme of your post, that he will not be able to perform regularly until his mid 30s, as most forwards tend to lose their reactions as they get older, and i'm convinced he is going to start playing second fiddle soon, perhaps not this year or even next, but there is no way he is going to be able to play every game for much longer than that in my opinion. If we were ever going to bring him back, this would be the last year I would go for him, unless he comes back for "cheap" for one final goodbye at United, but that would be probably more for marketing and sentimental reasons, rather than football ones.

{Ed001's Note - Rafa intends to build around Bale, not Ronaldo.}
