The population of Croatia is less than the population of Scotland, or indeed Ireland. Yet here they are heading into the last 16 of the World Cup.

However, the population gap is nothing when compared to England, or Iceland, the 2 absolute extremes. I’d love Iceland to progress and indeed they might!

I hope Croatia do Well, that modric is a good player.
I think we should buy another player with an itch modric, perisic, rakitic, savic
We have matic already he needs a friend with an itch.

I must be honest I do enjoy watching Argentina rubbish the bed and then roll round in it 😃 up yours Diego's both simeone and maradona.

Agree7 Disagree2

21 Jun 2018 21:30:37
They ware a team that play for each other where as Argentina are full of individual stars with huge egos.

I always cheered on the Argies. First World Cup I watched was 78, and I got their top. However, this is the worst team in my memory. Apart from Messi and Aguero, none of that starting 11 would get into one of the other major nations. Except maybe Dybala and he can't get a game. As someone who's always followed them, it's quite sad to see them so poor. I still backed Croatia at a ridiculous 3/ 1, so silver linings and all that.

They have a decent side, but it’s completely se up for Messi. When he doesn’t perform, they’re terrible. He’s been poor internationally for the last few years. I just don’t understand how a team of such limited resources can keep Huguine and a Dybala on the bench. Crying out for a 4-4-2. Two holding mids, Messi and Dybala (but they’d actually need to track back and play for the team) as narrow wide players and Hugine and Aguero up front. Can’t be worse than what we’ve seen in their last two games.

Their defence is terrible
Oatamendi is a bad defender.

Otaemendi deserved red today for that disgusting kick of the ball against Rakitic's head.

Di Maria, Messi, Aguero, Dybala forward line should be able to beat all the sides in the WC apart from Spain Germany and Brazil. But Danny is right, the team is set up for Messi and the supply line is not good enough from midfield.

Agree1 Disagree1

22 Jun 2018 08:58:12
I couldn't believe their line up. Some of the worlds best players and they field a team of practical no-marks. All the flailing around was doing my head in as well, as men and professionals they need holding to account!

Dybala, Banega, ADM, Higuain all should have been playing instead of the likes of Acuna, Meza, Perez, Salvio. Coach clearly has no idea what to do with the talent and they deserved what they got.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Jun 2018 09:27:28
I think they genuinely miss a proper midfielder like Veron, Redondo or Riquelme. They've no one who can control the tempo of a match and there's no transition between the defence (which is shockingly poor) and the attack.

Agree0 Disagree1

22 Jun 2018 09:58:47
Becks,

Hit the nail on the head, and Croatia had in my opinion the greatest player in the world right now at controlling the tempo of a game in Modric. That was the difference, Argentina never had any control on the game because of him, great performance.

22 Jun 2018 10:38:52
Gds2 I agree with you again.
Modric was the difference
There in with a chance of winning the world cup.

Once read somewhere that SAF was gutted when Modric didn't sign for us i think it was before he signed for Spurs . Quality and seems to be ageless like his teamate CR7😆😆.

22 Jun 2018 11:56:54
Fully agree GDS2 and Leahy12 - Modric has been one of if not the best midfielder for the past 2/ 3 years.

I’ve always loved the Messi Ronaldo debate. For me it boiled down to would you rather shag a big busty stunner (Ronaldo) or a quirky beauty (Messi), Andy I would have always gone for quirky. However, based on what we have. Seen so far I think there would be much better sex with the big busty stunner (Ronaldo) .

Messi is a thing of beauty but in the big tournaments he doesn’t seem able to influence games. Compare that to Ronaldo who seems to drag his country through and is almost a one man wrecking ball.

I much prefer quirky sex and will continue to do so but I know that the busty sex is probably better.

Do you like how Ronaldo hoists his shorts up before taking a freekick AJH? lol.

Both of them have looked off the boil for me. Ronaldo may have scored some goals, but his actually play has been below that of many other players so far. In saying that both of them have been playing alongside far inferior players, only so much one man can do.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Jun 2018 10:02:13
Ronaldo = 4 goals including a hat trick against one of the favourites, every goal for his country so far and the catalyst for everything good about Portugal

Messi - missed a penalty and done nothing else as his team have't won a game.

If that is Ronaldo off the boil then I don't know what you are expecting, he isn't the player he once was, he isn't as young or quite as quick but you do seem to have a weird negative opinion of him Beast or perhaps your expectations are too high.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jun 2018 10:24:12
Agree gds.

Im glad i'm not you beast otherwise i don't think i'd be around any longer. My little heart couldn't take the pain day in day out.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Jun 2018 11:33:57
haha - just because I think Ronaldo's play hasn't been that great and his goals have misled the fanboys?

A penalty, fluke/ freak goal and a quality freekick does not make you the best player in the world. I think your judging criteria on actual performance is far too simplistic and flawed.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Jun 2018 11:39:46
In form in the here and now the best player out there is Ronaldo.
Your only as good as your last game.
Ronaldo looks after himself and I'd say is as fit as any footballer out there.

22 Jun 2018 16:38:22
Running around a bit doesn't win you football matches Beast, scoring goals does, so sorry for judging the performance of a striker on how many important goals he's scored in 2 games.

Hi Ed's I've just got a bit of a general question. I'm just wondering what transfer activity is like during major summer international tournaments? Do you find it gets busier or does it quiet down as player are more focused on the tournament. I realise there's only a minor amount of players there in the grand skeem of things so I guess I'm more referring to the top European leagues.

Love the site and cheers for whatever response you can give.

{Ed002's Note - Work on transfers continues whilst players are away. Some clubs have already agreed much of their summer work (e.g. Roma) and come July 1 there will be an increase in transfers being completed. Some clubs have done a lot less because of other matters that are constraining them (e.g. Milan). There is a long way to go but work continues.}

Sweet! Appreciate the response Ed002.

Do some clubs do the ground work and are ready for the transfer but wait to see if the player picks up any serious injuries at the tournament before finalizing the deal? Similar to Ruud's transfer to utd in 2000 although i know it was not tournament related.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Clubs tend not to look on the dark side but will be aware of injuries.}

Okay Gentlemen, We have news on the Matt Hawker Cup 2019.

So far, what do we know?
The date will be the 15th of June
And held in Oxfordshire-ish again.

After speaking to all 24 players, they have all told me they would like to play again next year, and due to their monumental effort how can anyone say no?

After seeing the wonderful words and backing on the site, it is clear a lot more people want to join in for 2019, so we have decided to increase squad sizes from 12 to 14, allowing us to have 4 new players.

Quite frankly there is no easy way to choose, so from as of right now we are running a competition.

It is one question you have to answer, by midnight, Friday the 22nd of June.

How many in TOTAL, goals will be scored at the world cup 2018. So yes this includes all goals previous to today, so time to do some homework ;)

The closest 4 will be added into the Matt Hawker cup, the next 4 after that will be placed on the reserve list. It is an honour to Matt and the website that so many people want to get involved and for that i am extremely grateful.

For any ties in the final standings, it will work on closest guess then move down to who submitted their guess first, so you may want to wait till friday after a few more goals, but is it worth the risk?!

Please email me on benjaminallen1991@hotmail. co . uk, your username if you have one, contact email address and your guess.

Best of luck!

Hi all,
Thanks to the Eds as always.
Ed002, with reference to my previous post, I believe despite 'obviously him not signing before the end of the month', we've got him - can you confirm?

Best,

So Fred has been confirmed officially. I'm glad they kept that quiet so it didn't effect his World Cup appearances.

They just need to be very clear on the team sheet which Fred the Red they mean :-)
