Before the derby, on a lighter note, thought I would share a "collection" of Brendanism (Famous quotes by Brenton Rodgers) that I stumbled onto!

"When we have the football, everybody's a player."

"It was a perfect away performance, apart from the first 10 minutes."

"I've always said that you can live without water for many days, but you can't live for a second without hope."

"My biggest mentor is myself because I've had to study, so that's been my biggest influence."

"I started coaching for one reason and that was to make a difference for people, not just as footballers but as human beings."

"You train dogs, I like to educate players."

"When you've got the ball 65-70% of the time, it's a football death for the other team. We're not at that stage yet, but that's what we will get to. It's death by football. You just suck the life out of them."

"I always say a squad is like a good meal - I'm not a great cook but a good meal takes a wee bit of time, but also to offer a good meal you need good ingredients."

"All I'll ever do is all I've ever done in any job, and that's promise to fight for my life for the people of the city."

"I've always worked along the statistic, that if you can dominate the game with the ball you have a 79% chance of winning a game of football."

"We play with 11 men, other teams play with 10 men and a goalkeeper"

"We will always fight, that's what Liverpool football club is all about. We never accept SECOND BEST. Our main target is to arrive at the TOP FOUR".

I think he is the greatest human alive. LFC and TEL must be feeling like demi gods.

Deeps.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's the gift that keeps on giving :D

Agree0 Disagree0

Deeps

That is very funny and must of taken you forever to gather all that.

I think they are having a come to jesus moment on their page today. Some of them actually thought they where going to win the league LOL.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram

I found all of 'em at the same place. Won't be wasting a lot of time trying to pluck Brenton's nuggets of wisdom ;).

You heard what he said y'day? According to him, the only positive from yesterday's game was that Luis Suarez will be back on Wednesday. LOL

Deeps.

Agree0 Disagree0

Since he got suspended they have enjoyed their best run of points and form and yesterday was their first loss going back to last march. He is a very good player but not sure if that will translate into better results for them.

Agree0 Disagree0

He does come out with some cringey things. Talks utter cobblers which you can tell he has prepared it hours in advance too. Since his move from Wales he has been getting fake tans, had his teeth done, he's been on that exercise bike. Bought a suit or two. He's slowly looking like Jiminy Cricket ;)

I think this seasons champions will have the lowest points total for many seasons and I also think that with 6 games to go there will be 4 teams still in with a very realistic chance to win it. This could be the squeakiest of squeaky bum seasons. ;o) 4 games in and lovin it already

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ken,

I think you could be right. I still think it will be down to us, City and Chelsea. But there will be more teams than ever pushing for 4th spot, and taking points off the top teams. Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and perhaps Everton and Swansea will all be pushing hard for European places and are capable of taking points off any of the top sides. We could be in for a very exciting season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ken

I also agree. Until fairly recently, winning you rhyme games and drawing your away games would have meant you were right up the challenging but over the last 10 years we have seen some big points totals winning the league. I think 80/82 points might well do it this year.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rhyme games? I thought I had typed home games!

I don't watch a lot of youth football and my whole knowledge came from reading this site in the past. Whenever discussing about the academy players none of you actually thought Lingard would make it to the first team. But watching him perform in the preseason and now in the championship he seems a good player. Maybe he is just getting lucky ;)
Anyways are there any other players in the academy who you think are massively underrated. IMO Brady would have been a better player than Young as both would be used as squad players. Diouf actually did good in German league.

Lots of talent but so many never breakthrough. especially strikers but we have 2 young strikers who look top bracket Will Keane. Coming back from a cruciate so needs a run of games. and Wilson who just scores goals. Its the hardest position to get opportunities but these 2 have all the potential to become. dare I say it shearer like.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its always difficult to bring youngsters through, even more so now than ever. You just have to pick the best and hope for the best. There will always be some who go under the radar and develop later. Michael Keane is a good example, wasn't that highly rated in the academy but now looks like he could be an effective squad player. Same goes foe Jesse.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ken
I would say Keane is more a Sheringham type. Not a huge amount of pace but has great positional play, can assist, and has an eye for goal. I can not wait to see him get back to full fitness, and maybe go out on loan to a top championship side next year.

HB
I agree. Our academy produces so many good players on a consistent basis. Just look at the sides in the premiership that have filled their squads with our 'cast-offs'.

As for Jesse, anyone who has read the site for a few years knows he has always been rated by us all. However there are still question marks over what his level is. In the position he plays it means that to lack in one attribute can mean you never make it right to the top. But we hope he equals and betters most of our expectations.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post El Paso,

It's never as easy as some people think to bring youngster's through and whilst Lingard looks very talented it will take a lot more for him to have a big impact on our squad given the position he plays in. Hopefully he manages to make that step up but there are no guarantees. I'm still dubious TBH even after his impressive début for the Brummies but I always hope for the best.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think most on here have always rated jesse, in my opinion he is already a better option for us than some of the established names, he has a quick brain alongside his quick feet and an eye for goal, other players to look out for in the coming seasons are the keane twins, andreas perreira, james wilson in a few more years and demi mitchell could be great in a few more years.there are others but i'd be on here all day.

Agree0 Disagree0

Perreira looked very good in the euro u19 league.

Just can't understand what some players think before deciding to join a club?

Thiago at Bayern. not going to get lot of game time
Willian at Chelsea. not going to get lot of game time
De Bruyne at Chelsea. not going to get lot of game time

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Pretty sure Thiago is injured. and as for the two Chelsea boys, I think it's just a case of Mourinho taking his time in deciding what his best XI is. IMO Willian and De Bruyne won't be in his first choice XI whenever he does get one nailed down.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thiago has a serious injury and out for a few months. I believe it is an achilles or ankle injury.

I fancy us tomorrow against city.
1st time in ages toure won't be able to bully us in midfield, and elsewhere we have more quality than them with rooney and rvp bang in form.

Cant wait!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I hope you are right. A couple of weeks ago I would have said no way but with Rooney in current form anything is possible.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm actually happy with Fellaini as we always wanted such a midfielder, but if you look at Tuesday's match there was one player who outmuscled him, it was Lars Bender. I was hoping to see them fight it out in the middle more but fellaini was taken out very soon after Lars came in.

Wat happened Liverpool? I know its harsh but I think the fans needed the reality check.

On more important matters, I hope we start with kagawa instead of welbeck tomorrow. That'll show that moyes has a bit of balls to take the attack to city rather then the defensive tactic saf had usually deployed for the derby in recent years. Will never forget

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Liverpool will finish 6th at the very best. At least 25 points behind the Champions.

Us ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

A few key players were missing to be fair to them

Agree0 Disagree0

Anon

Very true but at the end of the day that's why football has become a squad game. We've missed Vidic and Rooney for long spells as well as many other players. It's a clubs ability to cope in those situations that often shapes their season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not United related but considering many people wanted Mourinho as our manager, what on earth is he doing with Chelsea? Apparently, Mata isn't good enough to play and he loans out Lakuka (spelling) when he needs a striker. Signs an aging Eto and puts him into the starting the lineup. If this was any other manager he wouldn't last more than a week. Hopefully he causes more agitation in the squad.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Jose wants things his way or no way. I expect him to get three points tonight, but the "Jose factor" is looking like fantasy at this moment in time. Still time to turn it around though. But the players do not look happy.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't get the thinking in letting lukuka go but I think Oscar is being picked over Mata

Agree0 Disagree0

LOL, Well he has dropped Luiz and willian today too and looks like trying to make a statement about who is the boss. It works fine as long as you are getting results.

I really think they will have a problem with having too many quality midfielders and keeping everyone happy.

In a world cup year, I don't think mata will be too happy playing carling cup games for chelsea.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mourinho is a very good manager, but he its all about him. He will do what is best for his ego and image. To be fair, he did do very well at Porto, which set him on his way. But since then he has won many more thophies with very strong teams that he has inherited. Then he has come into those teams and been given massive amounts of money to spend. No doubt he is a good manager, but he isn't up there with the very best.

Agree0 Disagree0

Would love us to move for Mata if we are looking for a left sided player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Betty, let's be honest Jose is a quality manager, the problem is he is a clown. Sometimes that fact comes back to bite him on the ass. Chelsea will challenge, but I think people like Red Man may have calmed down a little after seeing Chelsea up til now and realised that they will not run away with the league and Jose is not football's answer to god ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

Fresh, there is ZERO chance of Mata unless it meant Rooney going the other way. Chelsea will not sell to a rival, especially after the Rooney saga.

Agree0 Disagree0

I always liked Moyes appointment and did not join the ranks on Mourinho.

On that note I like how moyes through his various statements is making it clear who(vidic and rooney contract extensions) is in charge but very different to Mourinho is his approach and how he manages people.

SBR was absolutely right when he said Mourinho is not the type of manager suited for United.

Agree0 Disagree0

You don't win the league until May but if Chelsea win today are they top of the league?
Judge Mourinho in May

I don't think this would be a very popular opinion on the forum here but I think we need to play Kagawa in the derby.

I am not his biggest fan, and I have thought he is more suited to other fluid formations. But when people talk about playing Welbeck or anyone who would give defensive cover, I don't quite fancy that. May be we cannot go toe to toe with City in terms of playing an attacking game, but with Rooney, RVP and Kags, why should we not?

I am honestly tired of us playing a very defensive game against City for the last 2 years. It looks like we have a fear of losing. I would want us to go all out for it, they haven't started on fire either. We have Fellaini now, he covered up for Shinji against Bayer and I will expect him to keep Yaya quiet and provide defensive cover.

There would be nothing better than Kags, Persie, Wazza and Carrick ripping the blue noses a new one. Please Please!

Deeps.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Kags may play if Welbeck isn't 100%, but I would want us to start with Welbeck. We can always bring Kagawa on after an hour.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Moyes will set us up defensively not to lose and Young or Welbeck are more likely.

I am also concerned for Hernandez as he is getting almost no game time and we might lose him and Kagawa come next summer, if things continue as they are.

Agree0 Disagree0

Deeps
That's all very true but I'm not sure it is moyes way of thinking

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Deeps,

I agree that we need to go for a positive result but Welbeck does possess 1 ability in attack that Kagawa does not - the ability to run in beyond the defence and take defenders on with the ball at his feet. I'm a huge Kagawa fan and not a huge Welbeck fan but it's Kagawa's lack of mobility more than anything that would worry me about Sunday. He likes to float around looking for space whilst Welbeck (although less technical) can at least cover a greater area and try to put their defence on the back foot on the counter attack. I'd be more tempted with Kagawa if he'd had a run of games, which is not the case.

It's a purely tactical decision for me. The options are Kags - who is the most technical and best passer - Welbeck - who is the most dynamic and covers the most ground - and Young - who is the best crosser. Not one of them is the perfect option but they do offer Moyes very different options.

Bottom line is I wouldn't be disappointed with any of the 3 starting but I'm guessing he'll go for more of a 'runner' than Kagawa.

Last point, like I said I'm a huge Kagawa fan and would like to see him given the chance to adapt. So if he doesn't play v City I would like to see him given a good run in the team in less pressurised games.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram

I think you are right, Moyes will set us up not to lose. But honestly I can't wait to get back to the 4-2 vs Arsenal @ highbury days.

We don't counterattack that well anymore. Lack of pace may be? I hope we don't send hopeless long balls into the City box expecting Persie to pick up the pieces.

By the way, I see your prediction for Eriksen is being vindicated. Good call that one, I endorsed it back then in the Strootman vs Eriksen debate.

Syd

I kind of know, Welbeck will start, but that IMO sends the wrong signal out. Or may be I am just being a sentimentalist ;)

Deeps.

Agree0 Disagree0

Deeps

Completely agree, I think we should play the same team as Tuesday. On a similar note, I'd like to see us play a settled team and stop the continual rotation and messing about that was so prevalent under SAF.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred

I think you have called it bang on when you said Kagawa doesen't seem like a Moyes type of a player. I think we are doing the lad a bit of a dis-service. Strange buy from Fergie then?

Gav

I will go for Kags/Young. Young is very good with counter attacking football, as much as people villify him here, he does a good job covering up for Mad Paddy when need be. I agree he may be is not "United Quality" as people like to say. Remember the Chelsea game last season when he came back from injury, he played very well!

I agree we need to give Kags his fair share. Hope he features in Moyes' plans, to be honest I am not too optimistic though!

Deeps.

Agree0 Disagree0

Deeps, I actually like Welbeck and with him playing it's like having three strikers on the pitch when we attack. RvP, Rooney & Welbeck and when defending he is better than most on the pitch. He will cause problems if he plays. He plays well against City as they released him as a youngster. Which was odd as he was a great youth player, a bit Bambi-like, but full of goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

I want Kagawa to start, he is one of our best players and will help us keep the ball so much better.

Agree0 Disagree0

Deeps
I think it was a strange buy in a way as fergy never played him in the hole either.
I've said this before and it only a theory but I think fergy bought kags with the intention of playing him off Rooney but then rvp became available and changed fergys plans

Agree0 Disagree0

Deeps

Deeps

Same here and the last 20 minutes against leverkusen was like the old days and I think everyone misses the fast pace we used to play with compared to the slow build up nowadays.

I also think 80 points will win the league and more often than not we will set up not to lose especially away to our main rivals.

Erickson for 12 million was such a good buy for a team like us who is lacking midfielders.

I would be happy with a draw tomm to be honest and I must say whatever happens this year, we are guaranteed for the best PL season that I can ever remember.

There are no easy away games all the top clubs will drop points. I think when we look back the head to head records might be difference at the end of the year.

Finally got killed today on my bets, did not see some of those scores to be honest. Actually finding no easy bets at the moment and home or away does not mean much in this league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred

I think fergie was after a attacking midfielder and was looking to change our set up to 4-2-3-1 with Kagawa playing in the hole and potentially letting Rooney go. He pursued Moura after we had gotten RVP and Kagawa.

He was also by all accounts after a box to box midfielder if you believe the failed bids for witzel and the strootman stuff.

Agree0 Disagree0

God
You could be right I thought we were maybe going ti move to a 4-2-3-1 as well but we never really got there

So, a draw in the London derby and a win against City would put us top. Now that would be a good start to the season

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Before you all pile in, I clearly got my Londom derbies mixed up. Doh

Agree0 Disagree0

I would be happy with a draw tomorrow after the start we have had.

Agree0 Disagree0

I also expect to see Chelsea win today. They are dreadfully boring to watch under Jose so far and look very scrappy at times, Fulham should have gone one up with Bent one on one with Cech. I expect Chelsea to win, but the fans must be worried as they look poor at the moment. I think City will be a big contender and Chelsea will be there or thereabouts, but I think we have a great chance this season whatever the result tomorrow.

Agree0 Disagree0

Bent just missed a golden chance. Mourinho getting some heat and if they don't get some good results soon and the honeymoon might be over.
I have them winning today and would be shocked if they don't.

I think Mata is going to leave by the looks of things and would love to see him.

There is also news that Witsel is going to be available in January for 30 million Euros.

Those 2 and shaw/baines would be great.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram, SAF had an interest in Witsel, but I think we do not need a midfielder of his type until Carrick retires. We have Jones, Fellaini & Carrick, would have loved to see Thiago arrive but that ship has sailed :(

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney

I don't rate Jones for a midfielder as he seems lost for any ideas once he crosses the halfway line and he is a centre back and a very good one once he gets his chance.

Carrick is 34 soon and all top teams seem to have a wealth of talent and options in midfield, we are fine as long as they stay injury free but still short of options and will have issues if one gets Injured.

I think we will end up buying a couple of midfielders next summer and clear out Anderson and Fletchers as his contract is up next summer if I am not mistaken.

regarding to my post further down the page!

If we did sell shares? are the shares in the form of you don't actually gain anything from buying them so the glazers keep complete control?

Should it be wise to think maybe 2022 will most likely when the debt would be below 100 million obviously depending on what glazers are planning.

if our sponsors and income keep rising each year i'm sure we will always be stable and be able to spend big {Ed002's Note - The shares are the same as any other shares Big V. You have an interest in the asset the shares are associated with - in this case the business and club. You won't be allowed to pick the team.}

Leighton Baines today showing what we are missing! Happy with Evra so far though, perhaps we will go back in for him though given that he said he wants to leave.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

2 Superb free kicks. Must be one of the best left foots in the league. Shame we missed out on him.

Agree0 Disagree0

What do people think? IMO in dead ball situations he is as good as the Messis and Ronnies of the world!

Scoring two free kicks either side of the net, and one of them going in of the right stick! Amazing

Deeps.

Agree0 Disagree0

Deeps

You are not far off. I think he had one last week that hit the cross bar and he does not miss by much when he misses and seems to have the whole package, pace and technic to get it up and bring in down.

Agree0 Disagree0

For me his set pieces alone are worth £5-10m which was one of the reasons why I really wanted us to get Baines. On top of that he's a quality LB. If we had him RvP could get in the bleeding box when we get a corner too!

I can't believe so many posters thought Baines was overrated or not even that good. Shame he's getting on now as it's probably a bit late to go back in for him next summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gav

I am afraid the ship has sailed for Baines. I have always been a huge Evra supporter, but Baines would have been brilliant. Its a shame Baines came into his own in his late twenties. With our policy(Glazers) of buying young players with potential and re sale value, Baines was never going to be easy.

On second thoughts, he may not be worth 18 million, but he was certainly not worth what we were offering for him. 9 bleedin' million first up? Were we serious?

Deeps.

Agree0 Disagree0

Who knows maybe sydney will prove us all wrong and we go back for him in January. Given the fact that One of the Everton coaches has confirmed he wanted to come to us, it is possible.

Unfortunately if he keeps this up, the price might even get steeper and we all know how that goes:)

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not confident it will happen but I would still be glad to get Baines in Jan. He's a few years younger than evra, better and in excellent form.

We shouldn't have messed around so much in the past but he'd still be a very good signing.

Its been a good day so far for current and ex Manchester United youth players, Lingard has a hat trick on his debut and Brady and Morrison have scored for Hull and West Ham respectfully.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Four now for Lingard, and I obviously forgot to mention the two Macheda has for Doncaster.

Agree0 Disagree0

Macheda & Ajose.

Agree0 Disagree0

I always thought selling brady was quite odd as buttner has never doe anything for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Brady is a winger/left sided midfielder. He cannot defend.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney

Neither can Buttner :) Why pay 3.5 million for a guy that played 3 games when we had a young kid who could do that for us for nothing and the difference between the 2 is not much.

Another thing with Brady is that he is young and now getting his chance to play on a consistent basis, which will help his development.

Speaking off the young lads, read Petrucci had a very good game yesterday, so seems like all the young kids are having good loan spells.

Agree0 Disagree0

"Neither can Buttner"

LOL, I was going to type the same thing :)

Well plenty of ex academy players are making an impression in the league atm. Ravel Morrison just scored a goal from outside of the box and has been handling a deep lying role unexpectedly well, while Brady has been giving debuchy, france's first choice right back, plenty to think about while also scoring a goal.

Down in the championship Lingard just scored a hattrick, including a goal from outside of the box and a goal with his left foot.

Seems our academy is still producing plenty of talent imo

Believable0 Unbelievable0

And as I was writing this, Lingard scored a fourth and Brady assisted another

Delighted to see Jesse Lingard bag a hattrick on his Birmingham debut. I think he is a player that we should be looking to include in first team matches soon. It is a strange time to loan him out given that we have the Carling Cup game next week where he could of got some first team time.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's on 4 now! And Macheda's bagged a couple on his debut as well!

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we can let Young go next summer with Lingard Zaha and Januzaj coming through.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd like to think we could, but I don't think we will take the risk. Young won't be going anywhere.

Agree0 Disagree0

IMO we need to AT LEAST get rid of Young to make space for these youngsters. That's not slight on Young either but we have far too many players taking up space in these positions and at the end of the day none of them are world class, so they should leave to allow for the development of players like Januzaj and Zaha who could actually go on to be something special.

Agree0 Disagree0

Couldn't agree more HB.

Jesse Lingard first half hat-trick for Brum on his debut. I think this kid may be a late bloomer for us.

Alex Song loan in January? Would that be a good move? I don't think he is needed at all.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I have a feeling this won't be popular on this site but I like him I think he's a good player

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not sure he's needed. Decent player though.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, he is a good player. But we don't need him now as we have Fellaini to play that role. Money would be better spent on a more creative player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred

I think a lot of people underrate him too TBH but since we got Fellaini I think it would be a strange move now. Would rather someone more creative.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would like to see us sell Anderson and bring Song or Witsel, if the reports of both being available are true. we are still short in terms of quality midfielders if fellaini or carrick get injured.

To the Eds

Man united recently released there profit for the year etc
it also included that our debt had gone down 10% to 389 million I think it was . well around that anyway

Now apparently if we are going to be debt free by 2017 -18 surely we need more than 10% off the debt each year? {Ed002's Note - The debt was mainly in the form of bonds that were repayable in 2017 but Merrill Lynch has provided the funding to redeem the bonds early. The debt will decrease by considerably more over the next two years and at some point further shares will likely be sold to pay the debt down.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think if the Glazers want to take dividends which I think they want to do, then it's only fair that they get rid of the debt and debt interest. Of course they are entitled to take dividends as it's their asset, but taking dividends and paying interest will swallow up too much of the club's cash and could limit our transfer spends. {Ed002's Note - They can do what they wish as long as the debt is serviced Syd.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I know Ed, like I said it's their entitlement. But it would be nice to see that debt diminish before they take dividends.

The ability of the fans of two reasonably high-profile clubs are clearly unable to distinguish between banter and abuse and it is entirely at the editors' discretion if posts are deleted or not. If you want to behave like some knuckle-dragging moron take it elsewhere where no doubt it will be appreciated, because no one has any interest in it here.}

nobody's picked up on this apparently but Alan Stubb's coming out and saying Baines wanted to join United might interest our fellow everton posters here

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Baines was desperate to come. We got up to offering 13 million for him and Everton wanted 18. Things with Fellaini got very nasty in the end as Fellaini pushed the transfer through. Load of rubbish about him giving up his 4 Million though. He gave up 600 grand. United paid 27 million in two stages

I just wanted to say what a great site this is and well done to all the Eds for doing such a great job. Its also good to see Ed02 back on here. I've been a reader for a couple of years, but only a registered poster for the last month. Anyway, great job all. You get through an amazing amount of posts across all the pages, especially on and around deadline day. Its great to be a member on the site, and I look forward to visiting on a daily basis.
All the Eds do a great job, but the absence of certain ones was a loss to the site for a few weeks.

I know Rio will play Sunday but his lack of pace is makin him look bad as his will to put his head in like Vida is lacking like the Liverpool goal and Tuesday maybe smalling or Jones would b b better

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You can bet that Smalling will play at RB with Rio and Vida and Evra completing the back four. We looked solid for the majority of the Leverkusen game, especially with Carrick and Fellaini sitting in front.
