Lets look at the positives
1.Our attack is very good it showed today
2.Herrera what a difference he has made to the midfield he scores passes well and move the ball quick
3.What a difference Di Maria makes a bit of pace changes any team
Negatives
1.The defence were a total disaster Evans is calmatous and Blackett as a lot of inexperience Rafael is likely to give away a penalty Rojo was alright but Jones and Shaw are badly missed at least one if not two centre backs are needed
2.Lack of a natural leader Rooney just isn't in the right state of mind or position i always said defenders or centre midfielders always make the best captains just like Robson Keane Vidic or Ferdinand

Believable2 Unbelievable6

21 Sep 2014 20:20:34
Are you joking? Did you not see how vocal and p1ssed off Wayne was getting? Constantly talking to the ref with the best interest of the team. He showed today why he was picked as the captain over any other player. Who else actually shows as much passion as him in a game?

Agree11 Disagree5

Agree with most of it but thought Herrera didn't play well and we are in desperate need for a leader and should have gone all out for vidal as I have said for years we have never replaced keano as for the 2 cb's we all knew that is the week part of the team and should have bought garay who did want to come as we all knew

Agree0 Disagree4

21 Sep 2014 20:55:15
Ok let's not knee jerk.I think if de laet would have been sent off which he should have been then lei would been 10 men down and 3-1 down and things could have been a lot different and rafael was fouled should never have been a penalty, game changed from there.
I think we learnt a lesson tonight and consedring everton, spurs, liverpool lost and city n chelsea drew we havnt lost too much ground. This loss will haunt players and manager through out the season. I think the manner we fell after 3-2 was embarsng it shows that players are not yet over last seasons horror show and lack confidence. I think we wil bolster our defence in jan(shaw and jones are yet to come). Our players specially defender needs confidence and good run of games and we will be sorted. Overall i fell tonights loss will open lvg eyes about how tough epl is and iam confident he wil turn this around.

Agree3 Disagree0

I'm with ozwald on this one. I also think you're wrong about Rojo he looks a liability to me. Jones is by far our best CB the rest haven't been nearly good enough!

I think the real problem we have now is that because our defense is so bad we may have to play 3 which means either a midfielder or striker will have to be sacrificed in the coming games. It's so frustrating because our midfield and front 3 looked really good in the last couple of games. In my opinion we'll have to go 3 at the back until January at least, so I think one of rvp or Falcao will find themselves on the bench beside mata for the next few games!

Agree0 Disagree1

Rooney is not a leader he has always put a shift in and is very vocal but that does not make u a captain

Agree4 Disagree1

IMO we were in trouble when the choices for captaincy was so limited and tells you about the state of the squad at the beginning of the summer.

Losing Vidic was just a dumb thing and now he looks immense because all those long balls would've been gobbled up by him.

Agree2 Disagree2

21 Sep 2014 22:42:42
I agree with sparky. Moaning at everyone around you is not leadership. At 3-2 or 3-3 we needed an experienced leader to steady the rest and calm things down. Rooney puts a shift in and he's a busy player but he isn't a leader. Unfortunately its because of a lack of an alternative he's got the job in the first place. Today trying to be the leader and the creative fulcrum linking midfield to the strikers was too much for him.

Agree1 Disagree2

21 Sep 2014 23:10:37
Agreed shahram. I don't think this will end well. If we buy someone and give him the captaincy it will put his nose out. But given the lack of leaders on the pitch we do need to buy one.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not one person on here has any idea if rooney is a leader.
No one knows what has been said in training, before the match, half time or during the match.
No one knows rooneys interaction with the players or effect his captaincy has.
Just an other great example of "its rooneys fault"
You don't concede 5 goal because of your captain .
The back 4 aren't good enough and lack experiance, they looked shakey even when stuffing qpr.
Every goal came from a defensive mistake

Agree3 Disagree2

God created United

You should look at what kind of games vidic is having for inter. Not really different from our defense. We needed replacements and still do.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with jred. This is getting too much like "Rooney Bashing". Maybe he isn't the best captain we've ever had, but he's the best we've got so let's get on with it. He didn't do an awful lot wrong yesterday whereas others did, so please stop blaming everything on Rooney.
Our problem yesterday was 90% Clattenberg! Vardy dived his way through the match, got 2 pens, one player sent off and scored. How Clattenberg stopped short of clapping him and asking for his autograph is beyond me.
At 3-1 the game should have been over, but we still tried to score more when we should have closed it down.
Shaw and Jones will help and Rojo needs to understand his job a little better.
Our forward play is lightyears better than anything we've had for some time and we are not far off being a very good side again.
Last week many were saying we're on our way, and they are back this week pulling the team apart again. 5 games fellas, that's all it is!!!!

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Sep 2014 08:54:08
For me, a captain HAS to be right in the thick of it, when the going is getting tough. Therefore, he has to be a CB or CM. For Rooney to be in the thick of it he cannot stay in his position, and that isn't good for the team, as he is a striker or supposedly a number 10.

If we had a very strong CM or CB, then I believe that Rooney would now be vice captain and not captain. But because our CB's are either not good enough or too inexperienced, and our CM are new to the club and don't have that presence, Rooney by default has been made captain.

We are desperate for one top notch CB to play alongside Jones/Blackett/Rojo, someone to marshall the defence and b*llock the midfield when they don't do their job. We are also in need of a commanding presence in midfield to play in front of Blind and alongside Herrera. Either of these 2 new players should be the captain, where they are from should not matter. As long as they are in there battling when the sh*t hits the fan, can command the respect of their teammates and lead by example, just like Robson and Keane. Rooney needs to concentrate on his own game, in the correct part of the pitch. He has a hard enough job staying in position as it is, without feeling even greater need to show up at left back or right back.

Agree3 Disagree0

Okay so after Being hugely disappointed yesterday in letting a lead slip, I'm trying to think how we lost that game. Going forwards we looked great, midfield did ok (only second game the midfield have played together). Defence was naive, at 3-1 we should have passed them off the park closing the game out, but we went for more making the game more open. It's hard to criticise individuals because it's team game so their all culpable. I think Rvp needs a couple more games he looks short of confidence and sharpness.the new players we have will have found about the premier league yesterday, no team gives up it's a tough league. We will learn and improve from this. It was a strange game we let 5 in but I don't remember out goalkeeper making a save!!

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Sep 2014 11:17:57
Jred makes a very good point tbh. We don't know what Rooney is actually like as the captain but it's evident he cares a lot more about the result of the game than a lot of other players on the pitch.

Agree1 Disagree0

I might

I watched Vidic already twice and are you referring to him getting sent off for applauding a poor decision?

He is miles better than the lot we have and no comparison. This lot get beat in the air, on the ground and positionally no better than championship defenders.

To top it off our lot are f. king china and soft as rubbish as GN rightfully pointed out. Bad combination in a defender if you ask me. Go watch Mangala and that is a proper defender.

Pull up the stats and see how many games each one evans, jones and smelling have missed in the sat 3 years and whilst you are at it also check out rafael. Useless bunch if you ask me.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Sep 2014 19:31:21
I'd like to request that NoMidfield changes his name to NoDefence.

Believable10 Unbelievable0

Done!!!

Agree2 Disagree0

I would like to add that Blackett is totally not ready for this level. At this stage. He needs to be backup not first option.
As for Evans and smalling, they have never been good enough. But we're stuck with them for now, so we have to give them our support.
Hopefully we can add to the defence.

Agree1 Disagree1

And while we're at it, the refereeing decisions against us are becoming regular and a total joke. The whole world is living this, so we can't do anything to stop it. But there comes a time when these decisions must be questioned.
I'm disappointed that lvg, Giggs sit in the dugout and not on the touchline. All other managers put pressure on the refs.

Agree1 Disagree1

Nomid or is it NoDefense

I agree. Ashley young basically get thrown to the ground in the middle of the box and no call and following week clear penalty with the handball and no call . The guy today falls like a fairy with almost a nothing touch but refs are looking for retaliation when play develops that way. They are F. ing useless and a joke.

Agree2 Disagree1

21 Sep 2014 21:02:37
@no midfield we had(in india) big sam as pundit for todays matchday and he mentioned after the game that if he was a manager and after seeing the ref giving no foul on rafael and then gving a soft penalty he would have gone mad on the ref and would have ensured the ref was fined by fA

Agree1 Disagree1

Never liked Clattenburg has had some suspect decisions over the first couple of games already and has been caught up in racial and abuse scandels

Agree0 Disagree1

Agreed gcu and sid and mb. The refereeing decisions have become a problem. But unfortunately, we can't do anything about them. It is worrying.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Sep 2014 06:17:25
In an ideal world the FA would follow the Dutch model where the ref comes out after each game and explains their decision to the media.

This would make them more accountable and potentially knock some of their egos down to size, no names mentioned, but especially the lovely individual from the weekend.

Agree3 Disagree0

I particularly liked the fact that Vardy hit Rafael like a steam train sending him flying, then went down when the wind changed .
I always liked Clattenberg but he was dreadful yesterday it seems without Ferguson the refs are exacting a bit of revenge. Pathetic.

Agree0 Disagree1

21 Sep 2014 19:10:27
Obviously gutted about today, especially when we were cruising at 3-1 and looked more likely to add to our score, than concede, but clearly we got nervous and imploded after the pen that should have never of been. Lost our heads.

Anyway, I'm not going to harp on about what happened today and instead say, that clearly we need to add to our defence and I trust LVG to get in the right players, just like he has done this summer. Another 2 defenders, hopefully one will be Hummels and then add Strootman in midfield and we are in pretty good nick. This season is all about finishing top four, so we kick on then for the title next year, that's why maybe sometimes a loss isn't as bad as it seems, its just because we have such high standards. We're still clearly rebuilding and this season will be just as tough, but least there are signs we have a long term plan, because some the attacking football today was a pleasure to watch, compared to the past 2/3 seasons. Obviously we need results, but we are still in the early stages of transition, so don't get too disheartened by today. Plus I think we will be a lot better defensively when Shaw is flying down the left and on form, after today he has to play.

We'll be alright.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

Totally agree elvis, it's a terrible result considering the position we was in but I'm not worried at all about finishing top 4, we looked dangerous as hell going forward, nobody in the league will wanna face our attack, yes we conceded 5 but on another day it could of been 5-1 to us, injuries aren't nelping at the back but I agree we should play Shaw and move Rojo to cb with Jones when fit. Luckily for us results from other teams have gone our way if u look at our rivals, plus look at this weekends fixtures, as long as we beat West Ham then were right back in the mix

Agree1 Disagree1

I really expect us to win the next 3 games and make a major move up the table.

This sort of calamity can not be repeated again and i would prefer Carrick at CB than Smalling or Evans at the moment. He can pass and positionally much better and calm head.

Agree3 Disagree2

21 Sep 2014 18:54:38
Why are LvG and Giggs stuck to their seats regardless of how the game is going?

Are the seats so comfortable?

Believable3 Unbelievable2

The pay is so good and it is more comfy sitting down.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Sep 2014 18:42:08
Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton all lost to questionable opposition, 4th is just as realistic as it was last week, stop panicking and have some faith. We will look 100% better when jones returns and rojo moves over to cb with shaw at lb.

Believable4 Unbelievable4

Anon let's look at the performance in isolation and not in relation to results of other teams.

At 3-1 we should have seen the game out.

Agree3 Disagree0

I honestly think a lot of the problem is not the players we do or don't have it is the lack of leadership in our team we have nobody to organise the troops

Agree2 Disagree0

Actually i see arsenal's form fluctuating too. Third and fourth places are both up for grabs, not just for us but also for arsenal, Liverpool, Everton and spurs.
One thing that frightens me is that we looked a lot like the bayern munich managed by lvg in the sense that our cbs look like the pairing of van buyten and demichelis. We look decent going forward but i don't want us to be defensively like that bayern team.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Sep 2014 17:15:32
One observation, I watched LvG speak to his coach on the left a few times but does he speak much to Giggs?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

21 Sep 2014 18:06:18
No he doesn't, noticed it in a few games this season.

Agree1 Disagree0

Yeah I saw that Redman but he did speak to giggs once or twice . Perhaps he was copying our defence in not talking to each other !

Agree0 Disagree0

Redman, I mentioned this a few weeks ago. I don't know what Giggs is doing there? He just sits there and looks lost.

Agree3 Disagree0

Van Gaal doesn't understand double-dutch ;-)

According to my legit and totally real sources, the prices of cbs across Europe just went up by 20mn for the jan transfer window.

Blimey. Lots of hesterics on here!
To start with, I think Leicester gave Clattenberg man of the match. At best, he was just awful, at worst? Well say no more.
We spent a lot of money in the summer and the results are there for all to see?
Pros? They all looked good.
Cons? The positions we NEEDED to fill are still empty.
LvG has done a lot of good things since he's been with us, but he also needs the time to finish his build, and that means our back line.
Its painful at the moment but if the defenders he buys have the impact the others have had, we'll do well. I know it hurts guys, but he did say (and so did an Ed or 2) that it would take 3 windows and though its not easy for all of us right now I still think he'll use those windows wisely. Keep the faith!!

Believable6 Unbelievable1

Any chance of bringing howard webb out of retirement syd ? ;)

Agree2 Disagree0

Finally some sense.

Agree0 Disagree1

If any consolation Everton get beat at home and so do Spurs by teams who are picked to be in relegation battles. The league will throw up lots of weird results and still believe City will win it.

Having said that no way a team with our attacking players should lose from a 3-1 winning position and should have shored things up and picked them off for a few more. I wonder what was said in the dressing room afterwards :)

Have not seen the game and only highlights but will be very interested to hear peoples views.

Agree0 Disagree0

Should have won from that position . Hit the bar could have made it 4-1 They got a pen that wasn't and should have been a foul for us . That really lifted them got the crowd going again then poor play to give the other goals away

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Sep 2014 18:33:55
Apparently EaMon Holmes went past the dressing room and lvg was giving the hairdryer treatment.

Great result lads fantastico and you dare rip us whey hey.

Believable14 Unbelievable4

21 Sep 2014 15:50:42
Yeah but none of our players would get in your first team reusch so we can be excused. Three defeats in 5 and your lot say you'll be challenging for the league :-) do me a favour

Agree5 Disagree11

Brendan, you we're going to win the league, UCL, FA cup, World Cup and the Ryder cup after beating QPR 4-0, we won't challenge for the title but we'll finish ahead of buttheads minions.

Agree9 Disagree5

Liverpool fans deluded as ever.

Your defence is as poor as ours; plus you never had the ref in your side.

We will bounce back; and I am more than confident that we will finish in front of Liverpool this season. On another day, we would have won 5.1. The quality of our football - especially in the final third - is a level above yours, because we have better players. It is as simple as that IMO.

Agree3 Disagree6

Liverpool fans were saying you'd get the treble this season? Delusion.

Agree0 Disagree0

Liverpool were going to conquer the world I thought despite winning jack !

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh dear, oh dear

It was nice to see some of you guys pop over to chip in after the West Ham gave.

Agree5 Disagree1

21 Sep 2014 15:33:15
Kept quiet during the madness of the transfer window, and was not too happy to see Falcao signed. I know he is a top striker, but we so needed a top defender! Why did we not break the bank for Mangala, Subotic or Hummels, while seeing Garay go to a rubbish league? So we lose Vidic and Ferdinand, two of the very best and replace with Evans and Blackett, FFS

Believable7 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Mangala was of interest to Mr Moyes so the club were unlikely to follow up. Subotic was never moving. Hummels wanted the Barcelona move that never came off - do not be surprised to see him move as early as January with Dortmund already in discussions over a replacement. Faray did not go to a "rubbish league" - perhaps a little modesty and a little less ignorance would work.}

Faray ???

Agree1 Disagree2

21 Sep 2014 21:08:04
That's garay's camp brother. Not as talented as his sibling.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Sep 2014 05:49:44
Ed002,
Since Barcelona has a transfer ban and as you said hummels wanted the barca move
Where does he move to?
Man Utd?
Barca? Don't see how
any one else?
Thanks!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I have explained about the Barcelona move not happening and I have explained the interest of MU. Why is this so difficult for you to understand?}

21 Sep 2014 15:24:16
another false dawn

Believable4 Unbelievable1

Another showing of rubbish defence. Smalling nowhere near good enough at this level.
Desperately need an experienced cb.
And also need an experienced cm player like Vidal.

Any chance of De Sciglio and Hummels moving to us in the next year eds or is somebody else more likely

Nothing changed since summer? Nothing? Seriously?

Agree1 Disagree6

21 Sep 2014 16:57:59
Gds, back in summer we needed a right back, a world class centre back and a true leader as captain. That still hasn't changed. That was my point. We needed that in the summer and we still do.

Agree11 Disagree0

Gds

What Mr e is saying is we desperately needed a cb and cm and it hasn't happened ok

Agree3 Disagree0

22 Sep 2014 09:52:06
Must have just been the way you said 'nothing has changed' that confused me then eh.

Not happy with RVP getting a start at the expense of Mata looks like favouritism by LVG has juggled the team to play an out of form player. Interesting to see how long he will persist with this if RVPs form doesn't improve. What is up with shaw Evans and Blackett possibly the weakest CB pairing in the EPL

Believable0 Unbelievable5

21 Sep 2014 12:51:58
Will be interesting to see today how Falcao and Van Persie work together. Both are very traditional number 9s and may be wanting to use the same space at times. I do think though with Rooney playing in the number 10 role it will mean we will always have two goal scorers where they need to be (right up in the opposition half), Rooney as we all know has the tendency to drop very deep and go missing from games. Really hoping for a good hammering today boys!

Believable0 Unbelievable1

21 Sep 2014 15:28:57

Agree2 Disagree0

21 Sep 2014 12:37:27
So one change from last weekend with Falcao in for Mata. I think it is the one change many expected but it is the one I feared. I think we lack a lot of creativity and spark in the middle without Mata and would have dropped RVP for Falcao for today as he looks out of sorts.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

I've just heard Periera's contract will run out this summer! Is there any truth in this and is there going to be a new contract?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

21 Sep 2014 10:25:21
Was going through utd website regarding an article about giggs role and came across this not related to giggs but van gaal said this about himself."I always prepare for matches very thoroughly, " added the boss. "I have four books about the games Leicester have played already, including the one they lost against a smaller club [Shrewsbury in the Capital One Cup]. I know everything about the team, about their individual players, about the subs who can come into the game, even the atmosphere in the stadium and how they kick the first kick of the match. Everything."

May be that's normal but i guess van gaal is really a confident man.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

21 Sep 2014 10:17:02
I have just read about Andreas Pereira's contract situation and I have to say that I am worried as I think he has the potential to become a sensation in world football if he progresses the way many expect. Sign him up don't create another Pogba situation.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

21 Sep 2014 10:34:50
And what was the Pogba situation George? It has been covered by the ed's already? Unless you mean just a general us losing another very good young player.

Yeah I know, I didn't mean the whole malarky of him getting hoarded around Europe but just a young player leaving and us regretting it massively.

Thanks guys for your replies on Costa debate. I mostly agree with RVP and Falcao being better, yet Costa surely fits into our team better.

Yes, we all are very concerned about his hamstring issues, without him, we are considerably weaker, I do like remy and believe he can add lots of goals, and was a great buy, far from world class but a good option none of the less.

Good luck against Leicester, And we'll try to knock Down your rivals at the ethiad ;)

Been over to the Livers*** page to have a look at the aftermath of their most recent loss, and their melting down over there, last year BR was the best manager in Europe now they want him out and one poster even suggested Tony Pulis, they also think Ballo isn't the answer to their team and he isn't a Liverpool player and never will be, imagine their team with Di Maria, Falcao, Mata and RvP, oh wait no United player would get in their team, maybe Di Maria, maybe, god that was an uplifting read.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

It was me who mentioed Tony Pulis, what's wrong with him? I think he's fully deserving of a chance at a big club, he's got a 37% win ratio at Stoke and a 43% win ratio at Crystal Palace, on shoe string budgets, he makes his teams extemely resilient, think what he could do with a much higher calibre team and budget.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - If Pullis deserves a chance at a big club why would he go to Liverpool? Neil Lennon's still not got a job......
