Well 5 Goals some nice football, good work rate, a lot of work to be done, but what does that say about Jose, apparently just about everyone and there dog was unhappy with Jose, he really needs to take a good look at himself, but as he says its not about him, Merry Christmas Jose and Family. try and smile for gods sake.

Good managers evolve and change with the times. Mourinho refuses to change and I don’t think he ever will. Do you think Ferguson had the same tactics when he retired as he did in the early 90s. Modern players are much more suited to an arm round the shoulder approach rather than the strict disciplined approach.

When the eagerly anticipated team sheet was announced you'd have been forgiven for looking over to the bench and wondering where Mourinho was hiding.

On paper it looked a conservative selection. There was no Dalot, Fred, Mata or even Pereira. Neither Gomes or Garner had made the bench. I bet Jones's selection set some hearts fluttering and I can imagine Young's inclusion didn't inspire excitement in many. This after all was more or less the same team we'd seen toil for most of the season however that's where the comparisons stopped.

The front three played higher with more freedom, mobility, fluidity and pace. They played quicker, faster, interchanging short passes and positions for once sending the other team into a spin. They were supported well by the powerful Pogba whose influence steadily grew as the game progressed. The full backs were significantly more advanced, they showed real desire to make forward runs and support the play. Out of possession we pressed and harried with great energy, enthusiasm and purpose. We did not retreat or drop deep. We kept the pressure on right until the end and it was certainly our most impressive and commanding performance of the season.

Whilst Martial, Lingard and Rashford will rightly take the plaudits I felt we saw the real Victor Lindelof this afternoon. Afforded to play in his preferred position as the right sided CB his use of the ball was brilliant. For once he had the confidence to attack the space, step into midfield and I saw his real potential for the first time. Defensively he was more aggressive and willing to engage further up the field. He pressed well and competed better both physically and aerially. Jones was also solid and if he can stay fit is actually a decent player. Something to build on maybe?!

Cardiff contributed to their own downfall, they showed us too much respect and were too passive. They allowed us easy possession of the football and our confidence grew from there. They actually set up like we did under Jose against the better teams and were simply our run, out fought and out manoeuvred. We will face sterner examinations but with the risk of sounding cliche you can only play what's in front of you. We wouldn't have witnessed such an expensive and energetic game with Mourinho in change and we were a joy to behold at times.

Moving forward I hope Ole learns from the mistakes made by Giggs during his short stint as caretaker manager. On paper we have a favourable run of fixtures over the festive period and a real opportunity to put a string of results together. Whilst I understand Ole may want to give other players a chance and experiment with systems and formations like Giggs I believe this would be a mistake. What we need is a period of stability and continuity. A chance for players to develop partnerships, relationships and understanding. Ole has given himself a wonderful platform to build on. I wouldn't like to see too many changes come Boxing Day. Possibly an extra attacker in place of a midfielder, maybe Sanchez or Mata however that is something that can be done with 20-30 minutes to go hopefully with the game already won. The FA Cup will provide opportunity for rotation for now we just want the feel good factor and football to continue. Those grey skies are looking a little brighter already. A welcome early Christmas present thank you Ole. Keep up the good work.

Good post DLIB.

United Addict, he might, but that doesn’t mask the growing crisis at OT that he was causing. We can argue about whether he is past it or not but whichever is the case, he never was, and never will, the right man for our club.

Agree8 Disagree0

23 Dec 2018 08:15:18
United Addict, that will entirely depend on where he gets his next job. Many people have said Real Madrid or Inter Milan are the most likely destinations. However it is Wolves where the odds of Jose being the next manager where slashed. A betting ploy? Or just people jumping the gun due to the Mendes link?

Either way beyond Real Madrid and Inter Milan maybe PSG are the only other top team that would hire him.

Barcelona or Bayern Munich won't go near him. Juventus, Chelsea, Liverpool or City won't either, mostly because they currently have very good arguably better managers.

Jose has been a great manager, yet he looks like a man on the edge of falling off the plateau of the very best current managers and falling into that category of previously great managers. It has happened to many managers before, LvG, Wenger and Capello are obvious examples.

If he doesn't learn to adapt to modern football he risks becoming irrelevant, outdated and defunct.

That's not to say he won't win anything ever again, LvG and Wenger have both won the FA cup in the last 5 years. However, success as a great manager isn't measured in domestic cups but in league titles and UCL wins. Will Jose win another of those? Probably not unless he adapts his style or goes to a league like Ligue 1 with PSG where there isn't serious competition for the league title.

His last three jobs have gone exactly the same way, poor style on the pitch and falling outs with both players and club employees. The Special one has become the Sulky one. If he is to return to the pinnacle of football management he needs to re-find what it was that made him special and adpat it to the modern landscape. I hope he does, it would be a shame to see such a good manager and great football character fade into insignificance.

Great result and more importantly great football to go alongside. But we had our fair share of luck, a deflected goal, Cardiff being unable to attack. Others might not be as accommodating as Cardiff were. Young should not be starting games, the amount of times he got skinned by their wingers was only overtaken by the amount of times Herrera had to play rb as young was nowhere in sight.

You mean Young who played pretty much right wing all game like we have been crying out for? Take it to these teams, if they score who cares, we score more.

1-5, Ole’s first game, probably the best 90 minutes of the season, time to find fault 🙄

Chill mate, it feels different right now, enjoy it.

Most enjoyable game for a long time. Great to see a high line. Great to see full backs pushing on great to see higher tempo and desire to move and keep possesion. Great to see players bombing forward off the ball.
Yes there will be sterner tests but not for 4 or 5 games.
If we can build up momentum and confidence over the next few games we can put some pressure on those a move us.
Front 3 were all as good as each other today great movement and great finishing.

Oh how great it was to watch an exciting game, to not be in a bad mood, to dread watching the next game as you knew you would be frustrated, bored and angry.

Yes it was Cardiff, but we have been awful and even lost to lower teams.

My one concern was Martial did not look happy. I hope it was because he didn’t want to be subbed. Ole make him feel special, because he is special and we need him for the penetration speed and power he brings.

Great result last night. Well done to all. Great to see.

It could have been much much worse, another loss to a team below us, a draw even, drab unimaginative football. No goals. A lack of effort and application.

But it wasn’t. It was almost exactly what we all hoped for. 5-1 against anyone is a good result.

On a personal note, I couldn’t be happier for Ole. Great player, great bloke, great start.

Let’s take the same effort and enthusiasm into the next game!

Ed001 I'd be interested to get your thoughts on Lazios Milinkovic-Savic. Worthy of the hype or another case of overrating a young player?

Welcome to the bright new world

It will be so interesting to see what happens later today. The opposition will likely play on whatever centre backs are put out there, balls launched into that area, DDG will need to be commanding. I wondered whether our back line dropping so deep hindered DDG because they left him no room to work. We need to push our defence ten yards higher, connect midfield with attack and see what it brings.

I am bemused by the Solskjaer situation, it smacks of SAF influence but it is hard to understand how we think a loan manager from a Norwegian club is good enough. OGS will certainly have full support, he really is a legend and I expect far greater energy from the team today, I expect us to win but is he equipped to save the season results wise, I am less than convinced about that. People should consider that Giggs had four games and I seem to recall the team slumped back to old ways in the last game, the problems are still there for OGS

It will be interesting to see what support OGS gets in January, will they spend and who is making the decision. We will have a new manager in a few months, on what basis do we buy when it may not suit the next permanent manager, unless we buy a couple of Spurs key players!

If we suddenly see a rejuvenated set of players, people will be on here saying shows how bad Mourinho was. However, it should show how let down we have been by some players, they need rooting out and selling. OGS may be the baby faced assassin again by getting rid of some before the new manager arrives in summer.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

{Ed025's Note - getting a new manager is only half the problem though red man, you have to get rid of woodward if you are to progress, he is a little weasel who,s arse licking antics to keep the owners happy has been to the detriment of the club mate..

22 Dec 2018 10:24:47
Ed0025

Totally agree Woodward needs to go back to Finance, away from the football side.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - yeah mate, the playing side of things has been overlooked with him in the saddle red man and profits being the main aim over on field success, hes a creepy little scrotum who kow-tows to the glazers who are happy that the bucks are still rolling in even when the team are awful..

22 Dec 2018 10:38:41
Surely it would make sense to keep Woodward because he certainly knows how to bring money into the club what we need to do is remove Woodward from the football side of the business which is what I'm assuming a director of football would do, act as a go between between the manager and Woodward.

Agree5 Disagree0

22 Dec 2018 12:20:01
I think OGS job has more to do with morale as anything else. Not sure about him long term but he will get the players happy and playing, hopefully Pogba and Sanchez. whatever else, they are great players. I still think we already have enough to get us up the league and if Ole gets their heads straight, life for whoever takes over in the summer will be easier. At the moment, we need our identity back and Ole can do that, get the shape and style going and the new manager will see things more clearly. Good luck Ole.

I believe a Director of Football should report the same way Woodward does, perhaps to the board or owners and not to Woodward. Otherwise how will decisions change from where they are now?

Ed002's already said Ole will have no input into January transfers, either incomings or outgoings. He's an interim manager. Why would he have a say?

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed004's Note - It does seem like we will attempt to make January signings though. In particular there are strong links to both Costa and Milenkovic. So hopefully we will see the club try to sort out problem areas in central defense and out wide right. We have a strong basis in nets, fullbacks, midfield and most of the attack. Two signings could have a massive impact}

22 Dec 2018 16:28:24
Would you take either of them, Ed004?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - I would probably take both of them. Bailly needs a partner who is strong in the air and decent on the ball. While our right side needs someone who can beat a man}

22 Dec 2018 19:47:10
I like Milenkovic, but I have a feeling Costa might be more trouble than he's worth.

After so many matches, I am excited to watch us play against Cardiff tonight. I expect the team to win the match, but even if they don't I would like to see an attacking intent, a cohesiveness in the team.

I believe this hunch that I have since so many matches, I think that if we go on and score 5 goals in any of the match, we will see the tea, getting better and better after that.

Great article in the Indi this morning summing up the ajoseJose sacking.

“Every problem that became apparent in that atrocious 2015-16 season at Chelsea, and indeed his previous spell at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, has played out with such predictability at Old Trafford. There has been the same out-of-date football, the same stubbornness, the same destructive arguments with club officials over transfers, and the same “toxic relationship” with players. He is a one-time great now past it at the top level. “

Amen.

{Ed025's Note - that sums it up perfectly AJH, most of us were saying the same yet there were still some who defended him mate..how i dont know..

22 Dec 2018 08:05:38
I think for some fans we have this proud loyal thing of wanting not to sack managers and wanted it badly to work out under Jose. I was a backer of Jose and still feel the players need to take a look in the mirror but I am so excited after listening to the things OGS has been saying, I honestly feel optimistic and excited to watch us again.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - there is a fine line between loyalty and blind faith though WRD, it was a bad appointment and his demise should have came a hell of a lot earlier mate..

Very true Ed and Tony, blind faith and red tinted glasses. Happy for Ole, hope it goes well, at least get us playing attack minded football I think most will be happy with at this point. There are more issues than the manager tho and the right DoF will be the best signing we can can make.

{Ed025's Note - no argument from me there mate..

22 Dec 2018 12:26:49
Jose is far from finished i'd say he will pick up plenty more top trophies. Possibly even 1 or 2 this season.
Personally i think he should take 6 months out and reflect on areas where he has recurring issues. By all accounts his private persona is very different to his public one.
He was never going to succeed with out the full support of the board and players. He could win neither over. Wrong club for him because he never tried to change himself.
But he will bounce back and win again elsewhere. But he will Jane to improve in some aspects no doubt about that .
