I wasn't his biggest fan, but fair play to David Moyes'. He is doing a good job out in Spain with Sociedad. After todays 3.1 win against Cordoba, Sociedad are 9th in Spanish Primera Division. They were just above the relegation zone when he took over.

Classico. Players diving everywhere. Players going down for nothing. Feigning injury when no one has touched them.
So much skill on show yet the game descends into a farce with all the cheating. Two things, pique has developed into s great defender. And Bale on this showing, is not worth the money or the hype.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Embarrassing. No sporting behavior even comes close to the shameless behavior of El Classico. (And I was embarrassed by Di Maria and Januzaj a few weeks ago) Then Real Madrid cannot even be bothered to chase the ball in the final minutes. Plenty of histrionics, but no heart.

Tremendous win, what tension for the full 90. We can enjoy the 5 point gap, at least for now.

1. Great fighting spirit and many rising to the occasion with great games: Mata, Herrera, Fellaini, Smalling.

2. Quick triangulation on the right is looking more and more fluid between Valencia, Mata, and Herrera.

3. Credit to LVG. We have beaten two big opponents playing intelligent football and showing composure when it matters. Daley Blind personifies this, showing that intelligence counts for more than athleticism.

4. Good professionalism from many of the players. Young, Valencia, Fellaini and now Mata have bided their time and come good.

5. Juan Mata .

It has been a great two weeks. Let's hope our momentum continues to build.

Ed01, fellani didn't play that far forward, he marked joe Allen and played him off the pitch, he had more fight in him more energy, he done well going forward and defended, he done his job very well.

The best has to be Jan Molby I've seen a lot of United's matches this season and I find it quite amazing they are in the top four. The best way of describing them is clueless. Who is clueless now .

Today I hope will be the moment we have secured a top 4 finish, that will do for now.

How funny was it when ADM caught the ball a yard before the touchline?

How good was Mata, Herrera and Smalling. Special mention for Young who has really got his head down and works so hard for the team. It's a lesson for all players that if u work hard there is always a place for u. Obviously u need the ability but first and foremost u have to work harder than your opposite number.

Also seeing Al and LFC on here is very good to see and well played to u both for coming and taking it. I know how happy I am with the win so I can guess how gutted u are with the loss so fair play lads.

I still worry about Jones when he plays along with Toni (only 1 foot) Valencia. Is there any other player as one footed as him?

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Lovely build up play and passing for both goals and the penalty. It sounds like a way to take away credit for some excellent football from us today.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 19:58:36
Yeah, both goals came from route one hit and hope. We didn't carve them open like a tin of sardines with top quality football.

Agree3 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 20:04:28
Significantly more possession, significantly more passes and more accurate passing. But, of course, all our 500 plus passes were just lumped hopefully up to Fellaini.

Scousers are going to be hurting for a few weeks until they start feeling brave enough to come back here making the usual nonsense predictions.

We were the better team today, simple as.

Agree5 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 20:14:40
We hoofed it to Fellaini just a handful of times, but none of the hoofs resulted in either goal, penalty or ADM's poor pass to Rooney which should have finished off the game. That was just us walking through Liverpool's poor midfield.

I also think we played better against their 11 men. When Gerrard went off we were careless at times and made it harder for ourselves.

Agree2 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 21:11:15
I suspect five MU wins will be enough to get top four. Five from the next eight. Four wins and a couple draws would probably put us in a good position even if Liverpool won six and drawn one. Obviously we will go all out for eight wins, but five would probably do it.

Villa, WBA, Palace and Hull are must wins, one win from Chelsea, Everton, City & Arsenal also should be enough. There will be more slip ups, more twists and turns yet, but if we can get five wins from our last eight, it should be enough for us to achieve our goal.

Then we can go shopping in the summer and hopefully complete our transition.

Also how good is Herrera?? The guy gives us such a great tempo to our play. The first 45 minutes was the best I've seen us play at their place.

Great today and greats last week but the biggest thing for me is we look like a team that cares for each other and is fighting for each other. Everyone seemed so pleased for Mata, he is clearly a popular member of the team and we have real team spirit. Fair play to Fallaini who has shown how he can add value and Carrick (1 slip aside) controlled the game. And what about Smalling who seems to think he is Beckenbauer bringing the ball out.

If we can keep this going who knows what we can achieve.

Final point, well done to the linesman. So often they are passengers but his one was prepared to make a tough call and tell the ref that Gerrard had stamped on Herrera.

Mata was obviously a class act but also thought Herrera and Smalling were brilliant today. Herrera and Mata play really well together, have similar football brains and seem to gel together really nicely.

Just a little thought for all the LVG doubters, that despite 50 odd injuries, shot confidence after finishing 7th, 7 new players to try to intergrate, which in itself needs time, plus the fact he's new to the English game, that we have the BEST record against the big sides in the league, between us, Chelsea, City, arsenal and Liverpool. 4 wins a draw and a defeat. The footballs improving, were dominating possession against even arsenal etc, and when we find the system with a few additions to the team, bit more end product to our possession we could become a very good side again. So surely all of the doubters now believe LvG deserves time ??

Agree2 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:39:52
So does everyone think this result sows up top 4 for us. Statistically Arsenal are the form team in the league and i think i read somewhere they have won 9 out of the last 10, scored 24 and conceded 5.

If that holds they should win against Liverpool at home next round of matches and that leaves Liverpool 8 points out and still having to go to stamford bridge and Arsenal are also yet to play Chelsea at home.

I reckon 5 wins from the last 8 makes it impossible for us to miss out. Our tough run in suddenly looks much better given our last 2 results and feeling quiet optimistic now :))

We have Villa and WBA at home and Crystal palace and Hull away and expect to win them games.

Arsenal and City at home and Everton away are difficult to call as they are tricky fixtures. But expect points from those fixtures.

Finally, anything against Chelsea will be a bonus point.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

22 Mar 2015 17:48:34
Not sewn up but a big step towards it, liverpool are only 8 points behind if they lose and we win next game, which could happen but football doesn't work like that, arsenal made hard work of newcastle yesterday just like we did a couple of weeks ago.

I agree the tough run of fixtures looks better now and makes a mockery of the people who were saying we won't win any of the big games, I was confident the players would up their game in these big games just like they did first time round. On current form I would fancy us to beat city at Old Trafford, something seems to have clicked recently and we are playing with more freedom and confidence, today will have done that a lot of good, liverpool have been in great form and we didn't even let them play.

Agree2 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:53:35
Yay, Shahram has taken a happy pill. I'm not looking any further than the next game. I have enjoyed the last 2 immensely, not said that for a looooong time.

I think we have every chace of finishing 2nd, but could easily revert to our earlier form and miss out. If LVG is the genius we think he is he needs to play exactly the same team again. The challenge will come when RVP is fit, please God he is left out while we are playing so well.

Agree1 Disagree1

22 Mar 2015 18:04:17
AJH

If he is genius of a coach, he will leave RVP out and AdM and play the guys who deserve it and the team looks so much better. Playing RVP makes us so predictable as that means Rooney drops into midfield and all our problems start.

I think Carrick, Fellaini and Herrera are key players of us in the run in.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 18:15:46
All we need to do is concentrate on beating Villa. Beating Villa is crucial.

Agree4 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 18:16:32
Great team performance, especially the midfield battle.
Fellaini, Mata, Herrera, Maybe Moyes was a bit more knowledgeable than a lot of posters give him credit for.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 18:17:58
I don't think it sews up top 4, but its another big 3 points in the right direction. I have said on here before that ability means nothing if the application is lacking. We all know our players have ability. The application has been lacking. But even !ore important the those two factors is confidence. And ours seems to be returning at just the right time.
If we can maintain the later, I feel the rest will just fall into place. Winning the league is, in my view, wildly optimistic, though some still see it as a possibility.
In reality, I think second is more than realistic.
I know opinions vary, but I don't understand some of our fans' "fear" of meeting the big teams during the run in. The games against the Citys, Chelsea's, Liverpool's and so on are the games that the fans should relish. The games where the players should stand up to be counted, and play as if their lives depended on them.
Bring em on I say. These are the games that matter. The games that I look forwards to immensely.
We are Manchester United. We should fear nobody!!

Like most I am a happy Red Devil tonight. The first half performance was excellent. There are not too many sides that have gone to Anfield and dominated like that.Rather than point out who played well for me its easier to say the only one I wasn't impressed with was Valencia.
Its just a shame that having played our 2 best matches of the season its now an international break.

The 2 brilliant performances I have ever witnessed against Liverpool.
One was berbatov and the other was Mata today.
Mata was absolute class today with his finishing. Two wonderfully taken goals and I wish he, Fellaini and Young aren't shipped in the summer because they have been absolutely vital for us. Finally LVG starting to playing players on form.
Smalling and Jones have been surprisingly good. Probably because of the fact that they both have good understanding between them.
Arsenal, Chelsea and City, we are coming for the 9 points.
2nd place finish, here we come.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

22 Mar 2015 17:48:58
I don't believe any of the players you have mentioned will be moved in the summer and are an integral part of the squad. Fellaini looks awkward but can play for many of the top teams as most teams can't even defend against him. His control, graft and passing is very good and always gives a 100%.

I can definitely see Evans, Hernandez, Hernandes, Rafael, Powel and maybe Nani being moved on.

To be fair to Nani it would be interesting to see how he does under LVG and maybe will flourish like young has.

What we are seeing from Di Maria at the moment is ember Nani was but the difference is he did not shy away from a tackle and also defensively better and I know people are going to jump on this comment :)

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 19:47:02
If Jones can work on his positioning a bit, I bet he would improve immensely.
I would be a bit sad to see Rafael leave. Most players in the squad got a second chance like Mata did and I genuinely feel even if he isn't a first teamer, he is a very good second choice RB.
Nani would be a curious case though. We may need more players if we'll play champions league and I think he's'd perform better than Di Maria on current form.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:07:05
I thought Atkinson had a good game today, never liked him as a referee as I think he tends to favour the home teams, but he got almost everything correct today. Even the small bits. Also a good decision to blow the final whistle when he did. Many would have kept playing and it could have gotten nasty.

Calm down everyone, reality check needed. We only won today because Liverpool were rubbish and had a man sent off.
LvG is clueless, played pathetic tactics again with the wrong formation. Mata is an overpriced waste of money, as is that microphone head. Rooney is past it, Carrick is slower than a snail, but quicker than Blind.
One lucky win today, and your all go over the top.
We will take nothing from the Spurs or Liverpool games with this manager and defence. We will be lucky to finish top 6 let alone top 4.
The club can't afford another season without Champions League football, so this time next year we will be bankrupt.

Fantastic result on the back of a performance which showed the confidence created from last week's result. There's many a slip twixt cup and lip, but, win the next couple of home games, and who knows.

Great ball from Di Maria to Mata. The assist will pad his stats but his overall performance was poor, and once again he gave the ball away repeatedly in dangerous positions. Can we afford to play him in tight games? Maybe next year he will start to adapt to the EPL batter.

Hats off to the back 4. Smalling and Jones look they're starting to gel. How many chances did Liverpool have? And once again Fellaini was a monster. Herrera and Carrick, bar his one mistake, were class.

We are so much better a team without RVP.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

22 Mar 2015 16:16:28
That's unfair Shawthing, swap RvP (on current form) for Rooney today and there wouldn't have been much difference. Apart from the pen would have probably been scored. Herrera and Mata have given the midfield a more dynamic look and Carrick has settled the defence. Rooney overall has been decent up top, but the midfield has benefitted from better midfielders than him in there.

Agree9 Disagree2

22 Mar 2015 17:22:25

22 Mar 2015 21:46:19
Rooney didn't have a good game today, but RVP hasn't had a good game all season. The difference is Rooney is a United player, imbued with our ethos. He always gives his all, and is prepared to do the grinding work for the team. RVP is an egotistical divisive prima donna. On his day he is/was a great striker, but compare his stats to Rooney's since he moved to the EPL and you will see that Rooney is streets ahead even in the narrowest sense of who has scored more goals. RVP is essentially a single position player.

Yes, I know the argument - he won us #20. Agreed - his contribution was great but it's a team game and you never know what would have happened without him. It was like when Van Nistelrooy left and we bought Carrick. Everyone though SAF was nuts. Where would the goals come from? Well that season we scored more goals without him.

I appreciate it could be his "philosophy" has now sunk in, but I prefer to look at it as he has finally realised he is managing Man Utd and we won't stand for his rubbish for much longer.

A happy merger could be on the cards, especially as he is picking players on form rather than Rep!

That's why you have to give the manager a chance. You don't criticise on every opportunity. There will be ups and downs surely.

You throw enough darts eventually you will hit the bullseye!

Criticism was more than justified, and whilst I hope he has learnt from the lessons of this season 2 results and 2 good halves of attacking football don't mean we should write off the atrocious performances and bizarre decisions we have seen throughout the season.

Credit where its due, but certainly not redemption yet! We have seen X10 poor games for every good one.

22 Mar 2015 17:05:38
Criticism was justified, saying he should be sacked wasn't really. My comment was only tongue in cheek mate i'm pretty sure you are eating some of your words a little as it is. Interesting how since you said you weren't bothered about the performances they have improved somewhat. Maybe say you aren't interested in winning the league ;)

The Beast, do you agree the manager needs to be given time? While I agree with you performances in the past were far below expectations, I think we were quick to jump on the manager's back given every opportunity.
Above all, I like your passion mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:26:35
Beast, criticism was not justified as we have a world class manager, proven. And he had over 50 injuries in 3 months. He and 6 of our players were new. Most were new to this country, and you wanted them to gel straight away. It doesn't work like that.
Today is special so please give credit where its due.

GDS2 - I appreciate you were being sarcastic and you are justified to revel in it, as you have had the guys back during the dark times.

We all want LVG to do well as the club does well.

My view is you get more from life by being decisive, but that means making the occasional wrong call. I hope I do end up looking foolish for wanting him out.

I am a long way from being convinced about him still, despite actually enjoying watching us again. Long may it continue and I'll be sure to let you know when/if I tuck into my massive portion of humble pie, but we haven't even put it in the oven yet!

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:47:32
FanBoy - if they are showing the right signs then yes. Spurs came out of the blue, it wasn't like we looked like doing that - prior to Spurs he had done zero to show me anything would change no matter how much time he was given.

No-Mid - I actually say "Credit where it's due" in my post.

I am chuffed to bits with the win and the way we played last week. Football is about making decisions, I would have sacked him as he hadn't done enough to justify more time, but my expectations differ from others. I also didn't like the lack of progress with the resources.

I hope this is one of the very rare occasions I called it wrong. But it is too soon to tell. If we keep doing things the way we have recently I will be only too pleased to be wrong.

What choice did he have? It was stonewall and he doesn't want to be remembered for that when he leaves Liverpool this summer. It has also taken the focus away from how Liverpool were outclassed today, so benefits the team too.

Top result today.Totally deserved. That's the double against Liverpool this season, five goals to one and it feels great.

Still trying to comprehend that game first half absolutely amazing probably everything I thought we would be when LVG first took over. Second half was back to what we have been all season nervous and struggling to keep the ball. Had to get the win their though I think if we didn't our confidence would have been smashed but this will lift us going into the next few games nice to see the same side again against villa. Thought ADMs substitution basically cancelled out the man advantage he doesn't seem to grasp how to keep posession and doesn't attempt to win any sort of 50/50 ball. Herrera great first half hopefully now LVG can see in him what the rest of us have all season probably our most influential player when he's on song the whole team flows better. Again young shows how important he has become so good at making the right decisions at the right time and works non stop. Overall great result with some big positives really gives me hope for next season with a couple of key signings

Believable1 Unbelievable2

22 Mar 2015 15:48:14
cut then a bit of slack your never going to go to anfiekd and totally dominate like that first 45 mins for the full 90. Look at Chelsea and City games there. Just isn't going to happen. We gave the ball away too much when young went off, but ultimately should of scored another two with the pen and when di Maria and Rooney were through but played it behind di Maria! Yes second half was no where near as good but thought everyone did what was required.

Agree3 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 15:55:46
Haha jaime,

You know ADM set up the winning goal? Even when he's not playing well I think that's 11 league assists this season, imagine when he settles.

I didn't expect you to even post after we won so fair play, but you couldn't resist the negative digs.

Sack the clown!!

Agree4 Disagree3

GDS2

ADM is very poor at the moment and the winning goal was a sublime moment of skill from mata rather than a great delivery by ADM.

For me ADM has no courage and chickens out of every challenge and when touched he flays around on the ground. Granted he is United player but does not mean I have to like what I am seeing. In this league players like him don't last and are a wasted luxury buy.

He seems to be protecting himself against the slightest of tackles and has no bottle.

Agree3 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:21:11
GDS@

Watching Hazzard and Willian right now and both pacey wingers but both courageous and never shy away from the physicality of it. ADM should take a lesson from them.

The problem is what do you do with a 60 million Pound buy, keep playing him even though he looks worse and worse.

Reminds me of the Torres situation at Chelsea.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:31:54
Gds. As much as i liked di maria at rm. He is woeful for us and was terrible today. He lost the ball every time he got it. He cannot start until he starts showing some passion and a bit of the skill we know he has in abundance.

The last 2 performances apart I don't expect many on here would be happy with the performance of the team this year. So I have been pretty harsh on LVG but if this side and level of performance is what we are going to get for the majority of his tenure from now on then I will take it all back lol. I know there will be some dark days ahead but to see the side at least playing with confidence and belief and actually attacking whilst keeping posession I will mostly be happy.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 15:29:48
Why why why when they are 2 down with 10 men do we sit back? They were there to be taken apart and we end up scrapping???
Di Maria has no confidence at all, what do we do with him? Cut our losses, give him time? The cross for Rooney should have meant 3-0 but with all the space and time he put it behind him?
But. we are playing some great stuff and with the right signings this summer we may not be far from Chelsea etc. LvG has set them free to play and for the most part, they are!!!
But the best part? Big Al should be a little quiet!!!

Believable4 Unbelievable0

22 Mar 2015 15:36:17
ADM has been poor, but he is about attacking at pace - Blind was very indecisive behind him which didn't help. He did set-up Mata, so it wasn't a completely useless sub. I understood why we did it with Liverpool attacking, we needed pace to break - the flip side as GCU mentions is we are vulnerable if we commit men forward and he gives it away, which he does 90% of the time.

I would move him on if we can get upwards of £45m for him, he isn't strong enough and he gives the ball away far too much for a possession based game.

Some quality performances today, but we could have blitzed them as you say, risky tactics. Just like we could have Spurs, 6 points is more than I expected, our manager is very cautious but if we play well and get results I don't mind that he is a bit negative with the way he has us playing when we are winning (its if we are not winning and he does this that really gets me wound up).

I agree with you for the most part but i thought Rooney shouldve held his run abit.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 16:18:34
Rooney was off today, he made a similar early run in the first half, easy to blae ADM for that one, but I agree FZZ he miss-timed it. You have those days and so long as only a couple aren't at the races you can cope (Blind & Rooney today).

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:34:13
What? Blind was rock solid and him and young were superb. When adm came on, that's when the problems started. Were you watching the same match?

Agree2 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:55:31
Nomid

Completely agree with you. the introduction of ADM kind of even out the game to 10 versus 10 and we were much better without him on the pitch.

Defensively he does nothing and offensively he gave the ball away in such bad positions that had us on the back foot against a counter attacking Liverpool side.

Glad we have the International break, that should give shaw and Young time to recover.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 18:01:13
Nomid - First half his distribution was poor, he was slow on the ball and couldn't cross it. We weren't under any real pressure but he looked a yard off the game (not pace wise for once) mentally.

Second half he was very indecisive, he did well for the penalty but he had a poor game overall in my view. He has been very consistent for us and this was his worst game imo. Not a shocker, but like Rooney he just looked a little out of sorts and when you have everyone else doing very well it stands out if one or two are off colour.

I think we should bench him and disgraceful in terms of applying yourself and sell him in the summer if a decent offer comes in.

Anyway 6 points from Spurs and Liverpool is massive and well done Mr. LVG and the boys. Going to open an expensive bottle of wine:)))

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 17:39:35
Totally agree gcu. I would bench him and if his attitude doesn't change then he has to go. Falcao hasn't had the best of times but he was running celebrating like his life depended on it.
I was a massive fan of adm at RM but since the infamous game at Leicester, he's been utter rubbish and does not deserve the united shirt let alone the no.7 shirt. He has to buck up his ideas and quick.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Mar 2015 15:18:59
I don't know about anybody else, but ADM just is not trying hard enough, much like falcao he needs to show more, take more care when passing, show some desire.

They both just seem disinterested. Hats off to mata, for so long it seemed like he was not wanted by van gaal, but when he gets a chance he grabs hold with both hands. if only the other two showed half of his desire.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

22 Mar 2015 15:28:41
Yeah it looked dicey, but if they were down to 8 men it would have been, problem changing it so late on means players have to pick up the pace too quickly and it can do more damage than good. Thought Blind had a poor game today, Rooney mixed it better second half, but his pen miss summed up his game for me, almost but not quite at the races.

Fellaini, Herrera and obviously Mata awesome.

We need a RB if Rafael isn't fancied, Valencia just doesn't know what to do with the ball. Smalling & Jones looking like a solid partnership and Carrick very good again.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - Much improved performance. Di Maria showed glimpses of what he can offer but seems very low in confidence. Mata, Herrera, Carrick, Smalling and Jones were all brilliant}

22 Mar 2015 15:45:33
I thought Blind was ok, a few times he lost the ball but i much prefer him where he has been past 2 matches than the 2 before that.

I like valencia going forward but when he's static he is dodgey, maybe a new RB like him going forward but can also defend would be good.

Great game Mata shown the manager what he's all about well played.

Couldn't agree more FZZ, he's got a bit of Evans about him. Otamendi would slot nicely next to Smalling. Keep DDG, Clyne in at RB, Shaw to settle and Carrick to sit and we would look much stronger in defence. Bring in a Cavani type player and another midfielder (Pogba hopefully) and we are good to go.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - Not sure Cavani is good enough. Every time I see him play he seems to be poor}

ADM gives the ball away more than anyone else and that is perfect for a Liverpool team that scores from counter attacking with speed.
