With Kagawa,Lucas,Valencia,Roney and Nani,Welbeck coming in as substitutes, three cups are sure in next season campaign.

Believable2 Unbelievable4

I'm not sure how sure I'd be of us winning anything. Kagawa and Lucas would be fantastic additions to the squad - but there's a chance Chelsea will start the season with Hazard, Marin, Hulk, Oscar, Ramires, Mata, Willian, Lewandowski, Maicon et al. They may take some time to settle - but even so I can still see them packing quite a punch. There's also the small matter of city...
T0MB0Z

Agree5 Disagree1

I think Chelsea will come in 3rd and it will be a battle of Manchester again for the top spot. Lets see how the Chelsea manager deals with all the new players coming in and the big egos of the current players. Roman is not a patient man and I still believe he wants a big name manager.

Agree2 Disagree1

We are not so sure to win trophy with the line up of Lucas, Kagawa, Rooney... Let along without Lucas. If Lucas deal finally drops, and no one comes after all, that will surely increase the risk of one season without any trophy.

I've been reading the comments about ferguson/moura all day and waiting for someone to raise the question, why did ferguson make these comments?

He didn't do it in response to pressure from a journalist or the glazers or gill. He tries his best to keep his transfers as quiet as possible for multiple reasons.

I can only only think that he discussed this today because he felt comfortable doing it in the knowledge that did deal is done.

Believable9 Unbelievable1

Potential reasons -

1. In asserting our interest the Glazers will be forced to back him with the cash to sign the players or face the wrath of the fans.

2. SAF has been asked to drum up the valuation of the club by linking us with (and potentially buying) top talent.

3. A paper suggested that a deal was done and he did not want to disappoint the fans or annoy Sao Paulo, the player or his agent.

4. SAF wanted to reassure the fans that the club were looking to strengthen further to alleviate fears of Chelsea overtaking us with their signings.

I'm leaning towards three - although knowing SAF, football and the Glazers - it's probably a little of each.

T0MB0Z

Agree5 Disagree0

T0MB0Z...I can understand SAF not wanting to annoy the fans, but do you think he cares about upsetting another club who really have nothing to do with us aside from the odd transfer every handful of years, a player who's only 19 and his awkward agent? I would of thought that he's got more depth than to be worried about their opinions that don't really have much bearing on the club! But as you say...most likely a mix of all four!

Andy

Agree1 Disagree0

Andy - If he's serious about signing Lucas (or any player for that matter) - it does not make sense for us to piss them off before the deal is completed, no?

IMO i think the reason sir fergie will get moura and possibly sum1 else is tht the glazers are going to back him 1 last time with plenty of cash because he is guna build 1 last quality team and have 2 more cracks at CL and winning 20 titles b4 retire in 2year at same time as giggsy

I think Lucas Moura will be an excellent signing s he reminds of Ramires but has a more creatives side. Does he not remind you of a certain Roy Kean?

I also think SAF is trying to create a mini Barcelona with a possible midfield of Lucas Cleverley and Kagawa making Cleverley play a deaper role to dictate the game. We saw glimpses at the start of last season mainly in the 8-2 vs Arsenal when Cleverley and Anderson were at the heart of everything.

Comments would be appreciated {Ed004's Note - Moura like Keane?!? Have you ever seen either of them play?}

Believable0 Unbelievable8

You lost me at Keane...

Also - Cleverly pushed up at the beginning of last season. If anyone it was Anderson who hung back.

Lucas's agent and sao paulo president quickly moved to deny the claim of a 26m bid being accepted on brazilian radio, within a few hours of the article coming out on the daily mirror's website and paper. The agent claiming the london based tabloid that released the claim were simply making it up and that "that happens quite a lot in the british press.", which is true in fairness.

It would seem a deal is still very much in the balance. Given fegie's unusual move to come out confirming the talks with moura though, could it be that the deal has been arranged behind the scenes already? The comments strike me as a bit of a dangerous thing to do given some of the teams in europe today. I wouldnt put it past the likes of chelsea/man city or real madrid to make a bid just because they have realised we are close to sealing a deal, even if they werent that interested in the player. - On the Powel transfer, fergie said himself that "we do the scouting for a lot of clubs." Apparantly a number of teams came in when they heard we made an offer, but the deal had already been sealed.

With s.p. - if the deal has been arranged the s.p. president and the agent ribiero may also have agreed to go along with a cover story. We know the Man United negotiations team have a reputation of secrecy. The mexican press and chivas described hernandez's deal as being conducted with "james bond like secrecy" (lol)

The other possibilities I suppose would be that the deal has stalled a bit, and we are trying to prove that we arent sensitive to letting moura pass by, or perhaps, we have come to an agreement with the player but not the club, so we arent worried about him being poached.

fergie came out with the van persie bid too a few days ago, but i dont think it parralels this moura one. It seemed confusing also, but i think he did so because according to him, arsenal had "obviously made the bid public." anyway. - Would also guess he probably wants to avoid a bidding war too. "nothing might happen on that front," is a good message to send out. So long as man city dont get it in there heads that they should try and outbid us on the transfer, we may have a good chance at the contract negotiations.

I know the formation posts must annoy the eds...but I thought i'd try my hand at a more realistic one for the start of the season!

De Gea
Rafael Vidic Jones Baines
Carrick Anderson/Powell
Valencia Kagawa/Moura Young
Rooney

Considering the injury to Smalling I reckon Jones will come in, with Rio playing a secondary role (impact sub). SAF has said that LB needs to be addressed and I still think Baines is the front runner given that SAF is a fan of his. I rate him pretty highly and I think he could link well with Young. Some people posting on here and leaving out Valencia is just crazy...he's one of our top three players and one of the best wingers in the PL. If Moura comes in (which I think he will) I reckon he'll alternate with Kagawa, the players we've bought in the past haven't been allowed to start every game of the season and this season will be no different, Kagawa and Moura will both get a lot of game time, but probably in equal measure. Unfortunately I can't see a CM coming in, unless it's a late deal for Witsel for Anderson plus some cash. I'd like this...but not likely! I hope we don't see RVP in a United shirt this season...I can't see him having an injury free season and I can't see him fitting into a team with Valencia, Moura, Rooney and Kagawa...not to mention Welbeck and Hernandez who both have good futures here. Moura, Baines, Kagawa and Powell would be a fantastic summer for us. Assuming Powell and Cleverly can cut it in midfield (which I believe they can) we're sorted in terms of cover for the midfield. We've still got the old guard to rescue us if needed too! Anyway...I view this as a realistic formation come August. All this talk of M'Villa and RVP is just talk that's getting fueled by the papers. Moura and Baines to finish off a very successful transfer window for us! Thoughts and comments appreciated guys...I reckon I'll get slated but there's only a select few on here that don't!;)

Andy!

Believable4 Unbelievable2

Stopped reading when I read rio as an impact sub

Agree3 Disagree0

What about Scholes and I think Nani is better than Young.

Agree1 Disagree0

Whilst I'll agree that the M'Villa talk is all paper talk (and actually there's been very little of it)- there's as much official talk of us signing RVP as Moura and NONE in us signing Baines.

Anyway. 'a more realistic' formation? So we spend £50m on two players and play a formation that only allows us to play one of them? Doesn't seem too likely to me.

As far as I can see you don't mention Nani at all anywhere in your post. Young's ahead of him in the starting line-up though so I can only assume you think he'll be sold. Why would we sell Nani when we only have 2 other (quality) designated wingers at the club? Nani is twice the player Young is and on his day is better than Valencia. His ability to play on either the left or right wing makes him invaluable to the club and I really don't see him being sold unless another winger is signed. I know that Kagawa and Moura CAN play on the left and right (respectively) - but I doubt SAF's going to spend that much to play them out of position (at least I'd hope not). I also don't see Powell playing in the EPL for the first few months of the season and Kagawa may also take a while to settle.

T0MB0Z

Agree6 Disagree1

I wouldn't swap Ando for Wiztel (sp) never mind plus cash. But I'm not slating as I know the majority on here probably would.

Moura and Baines would make for a very good summer IMO.

DodgyBanter

Agree0 Disagree0

Why do I have a feeling that this formation will be tried at some points in the season:
(3-4-1-2)
Jones Vidic Jones
Valencia Carrick/Anderson Scholes/Cleverly Nani/ Young
Kagawa/Moura
Rooney Van Persie/Welbeck

I know that this formation is highly unlikely but I for one would be very happy to give it a try! You never know what SAF has up his sleeve.

In theory fullbacks have the least influence on a pitch. The only fullbacks United have in the team at the moment are Evra and Rafael. United's interest on Baines has seemed to cool down as well! Would be very interesting!!

NIK Legend SA {Ed004's Note - I can't see us playing without a keeper or playing 2 jones.}

Agree1 Disagree1

That is a relatively realistic lineup IMO. If we don't sign a CM I'll be dissapointed but I'm not sure we'll get one. So, I'd start Cleverly alongside Carrick. I'd keep Kagawa in the middle of the 3 with Moura/Valencia/Young rotating for the wide positions. Powell could deputise for either Cleverly (CM) or Kagawa (CAM). Anderson, Scholes and Giggs as cover

Would have thought that team could win us back the PL but we will struggle if we get to the knock out stages of the CL without a new CM

Gav

Agree1 Disagree0

T0MB0Z...Your comment about Baines confuses me, we've been linked to him since before the transfer window opened, SAF likes him and he has recently said he intends to address the LB issue, until the Moura rumors started Baines was receiving a huge amount of attention, with many thinking personal terms had been agreed and it was just the fee to be decided upon. The only official talk about RVP is that we have made a bid, for all we know we offered them 10 quid and Rooney's autograph, just for s***s and giggles!

I seem to remember paying a large amount of money back in 2007 for Nani and Ando, and they didn't walk onto the starting XI so I would not be surprised if Kagawa and Moura don't play every game.

Yes I think Nani will be sold if Moura comes in, there's no place for him in the team unfortunately! Young is much better on the left, Nani does not like playing there and that has been clear when he's been put in that position. Playing Kagawa as a winger would be a waste...he looks for the killer pass through to the strikers, and IMO he'd be muscled off the ball by some of the larger RBs in the PL, let alone Europe. Young has a good pass, good pace and can track back. On his day yes, Nani is immense (I don't think he's better than Valencia though), but he has about 4 days per season...which just isn't enough! If he goes, we'll have two first choice wingers (Young and Valencia) with, as you rightly say, Moura and Kagawa as options for out wide, but only if needed.

Andy

Agree1 Disagree0

'We may need to address the left back issue' is very different to 'we're interested in signing'. There has been NOTHING official from either us or Everton that there's interest in Baines where as both Arsenal, Sau Paulo and United have all come out and confirmed United interest in RVP and Moura. You saying that RVP talk is fueled by the papers when we've made a bid to sign him and that Baines is probable when we haven't shown any official interest seems a little odd.

Our spending in 2007 came at a time when we were free spending and our squad rather than first team needed strengthening. Given the clubs debt and admission that funds are tight, our failure to win the league and embarrassing exit from the champions league and our weakness in the center of the pitch - I do not see large sums being spent for players that SAF doesn't think can make a big difference to our game now.

Perhaps Nani will be sold if Moura comes in - but imo his versatility makes him a more valuable player than Valencia to us. 8 games out of 10 Valencia is the better player - but his inability to play anywhere but on the right wing limits us hugely and I honestly believe Nani can improve his consistency. No place in the team? He can play in any of our attacking positions. I'd say there was more of a place for Nani than Valencia (although I'm by no means suggesting Valencia should be sold).

Kagawa's not the fastest player in the world and not too prone to taking players on and beating them. I've also not seen him delivering too many crosses. Aren't these the key attributes/abilities of a winger? As you say. Playing him there on a weekly basis would be a waste - but who exactly would cover the position on a long term basis were Young to pick up a serious injury with Nani having been sold?

I'll agree that Nani COULD be sold (depending on finances) - but to say that there's no place for him in the team seems a little ridiculous. He'd walk into pretty much any top team and be a key player.

T0MB0Z

Agree2 Disagree1

It's just a gut feeling I have to be honest. I don't know how SAF could justify buying RVP when we already have 4 strikers (ok Berba will probably go, but Powell and Kagawa can both play up front) while not buying a LB. And Baines is, IMO, the front runner should be sign a LB.

I would think Moura and Kagawa will make huge differences to our team now, whether one or both of them are on the pitch! They would give us the fluidity and tenacity that we were clearly lacking last season...they will both score and create goals. And i don't need to remind anyone how important an extra few goals would have been last season.

Nani's versatility on paper is appealing, but it's just not there during the games! It is most certainly the main argument for keeping him, but i'd prefer to have Valencia delivering crosses that create goals in 8 out of 10 matches than Nani maybe hitting his form in 2 out of 10! Also, Valencia can play at RB as he has done on a few occasions. A minor point though!

I think if Young were to be injured there would be sufficient cover in Giggs and Kagawa. Yes Kagawa isn't a natural winger, but he has played there for both club and country. And Giggs, well...Giggs doesn't even need to be talked about! No matter who our first choice LW is, he'll still get quite a bit of game time in that position.

You must surely agree though that if Moura and a LB are brought in, someone would need to be sold in order to balnce the books, and Berba's 5 million won't do that! Who would have sold, and while I'm asking questions what would your formation be?:)

Andy

Agree0 Disagree0

I have no idea whether someone will need to be sold to balance the books. For all we know the Glazers are finally going to put some of their own money into the club?

If people want a preview of this upcoming season, and want some optimism regarding Chicharito (I know I've been one of his critics who think he needs to improve) look at the pass made by Kagawa to set him free against Ajax CT. Watching Kagawa play the last few seasons this is the kind of deadly pass that he loves to play, and this perfectly suits Hernandez's style of playing on the shoulder of the last defender. This is the kind of incisive through ball that Scholes used to play from his more advanced position, but since he's dropped deeper, we've been missing this kind of threat in our attack. A true link between defense and our strikers, without relying on going wide with Valencia/Nani/Young. This should also help Welbeck score more this season.-KG

anyone else get annoyed with how deep our defense sits, rio is often just in front of our 18 yard box.
if you look at barca their defenders are just behind the half way line when on the ball.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

Yes, they flood the attacking zone because their CBs occupy the deep lying midfield role when in possession, and they can all play the ball on the floor, but IMO its mostly due to the confidence they can have in holding the ball. No other team in the world holds the ball as well, and this allows the backs to push forward with far less risk of being quickly exposed on the counter. More direct teams like United could struggle with giveaways turning into counterattacking scoring chances. Different styles of play. But yes, it would be nice if Rio (or esp Jones when playing) would push forward and allow Carrick, Scholes or Anderson to push closer to the strikers. Also would be nice to see Rafael provide a more consistent attacking threat. Dani Alves does it every match, Rafael has the ability to do the same. -KG

Partially agree with you but its more to do with Rio and Evans not being the quickest of defenders with Rio losing a yard of pace.

I notice Mike the Moston Red was saying there was a link to the sale of season tickets to the rather bizarre acknowledgement of interest in RVP and Moura.

On reflection the IPO is allegedly being brought forward to the beginning of August and we need to encourage investors to buy shares. The Glazers are classifying us as a media company and we have had some good publicity recently where people are reporting that we are again trying to buy top players. One of the comments on the IPO is that the Glazers have laden us with debt leaving us unable to buy top players. Then a few days before the shares are apparently to be released SAF is suddenly unusually willing to talk about targets.

It is not season tickets but more likely shares that are at stake. Let's see where all these players end up but you can imagine the Glazers would have been none too happy when SAF said one more , maybe.

Ed 004, do you think that there is any chance of Young getting sold? Further down the page you said that one of Nani or Young could be sold. I have always said i'd rather have Nani than Young. So if Moura comes in and Young leaves it would be good business. But, don't get me wrong, I do like Young - but there is no room for sentiment.

RedDevil19 {Ed004's Note - I agree. Would prefer to see Nani kept.}

Believable4 Unbelievable0

Agree 200%. Nani is inconsistent, but on his day he's top 5 player on the planet in terms of skill level. Young may be more consistent, but he's older and doesn't have the same ceiling as Nani. That being said, Nani is much worse on the left wing, so Young leaving doesn't do much to get both Nani and Valencia on the pitch together as both are (or should be) strictly right sided players.....-KG

Question lads - and I'm a Liverpool fan but it is genuine.

If you sell berbs, and bring in RVP (which would be extremely good business) how do you fit the rest of your strikers in the team?
Obviously Rooney and RvP are always a start, but where does that leave chicorito and welbeck, as I imagine they will want 1st team football?

Just curious - I will we had such luxuries as picking so many decent strikers, lol!

I complete agree mate... I don't think van persie is a necessity this season tbh. It would be nice seeing the 2 of the premier leagues top strikers playing together week in week out but it may limit Wellbecks growth and Chicaritos simultaneously. He knows where the net is, but think he may struggle to make the grade. He does still have time on his side though so will like to see him prove me wrong. Hi guys

Watched the Pat Crerand show tonight with Lou Macari deputising whilst Pat is on the tour.

Two very good calls from Phil in Prestwich and Ruth in Stafford. Lou's face gave a lot away whilst they were talking. Although in some respects he was trying to toe the party line, you could see he agreed with what they were saying.

Ruth stated that how on earth can Fergie suggest that we may be in for RVP, there is no way that Wenger would sell him to us. The same spin with this Lucas kid.

I mentioned earlier we are all getting sick and tired of this rubbish. Last year it was Nasri and Schneider to try and accelerate dwindling ST sales. Kagawa and Powell are rocking anybody,s world I,m sorry to say.

Phil hit the nail on the head about Welbeck wanting £60k a week when Modric is on £40k a week, he isn't fit to tie Modrics boots. Phil is right.

We all know Marwood is all over our club like a rash from top to bottom. Everyone here in Manchester knows it. Why do you think Morrison, Pogba and Fryers are gone. Let's be honest he nearly pulled it off with Rooney.

Gill is just pointless when it comes to being a Chief Exec he admitted himself he couldn't convince Rooney to stay before Fergie cried him in to a new contract.

Don't anybody come on here giving it it's all the Glazers fault. They are only here because of one blokes greed over a racehorses bodily fluids.

Why don't we as paying fans get some truth for a change we will get behind United if they need us. Saying we are in for him and in for him then sending me an email saying there are season tickets left on the same day is wearing a bit thin.

Winning that 19th title bought the club 12 months reprieve. He cr*pped on Berbatov in the CL final last year and gave him 3 starts last year. Everyone knows the Berb would have chipped in and the GD column would have been ours for No 20.

We are rapidly becoming the new Villa and Liverpool. Let's see if anyone worth talking about is brought in before deadline day. I'm betting a big no

Mike the Moston Red

Believable7 Unbelievable5

It's fans like you who think we are in decline. Be a tad optimistic, how are we becoming Liverpool we lost the league in the 93rd min. When fergie goes the new manager will have one hell of a team to inherit potentially with Lucas who in 2 or 3 years will win the ballon d'or then you have will Keane Michael Keane smalling jones the da silvas cleverly welbeck. Our clubs future is fine we will never be a Liverpool. Phil I can't stand I listen to him go on about this and that can you or anyone tell me welbecks actual demand has he ever said he wants 60k a week? Kagawa is a great signing Powell will be a brilliant player. United do not say they are interested in a player to sell season tickets. I personally would snap up a season ticket but I couldnt afford it.

Also, if Modric is on £40k p/w it's not because that is his current value it's because he hasn't signed a new contract. If he went to a new club and signed a new contract (as Wellbeck is looking to do) - Modric would be on over £100k p/w easily. So the comparison will Wellbeck's wage is not valid

Not the worst idea I've ever heard. Would think Jones would be more natural there, but young Rafael is strong, decent passer, good engine, and very importantly for a central midfielder, he's two footed. Don't have any rumours but bit of info into FFP. I've been doing some work in a FAI delegates house in Dublin. I was chatting bout the wages and transfers and were will it stop. I was asking would FFP work. He told me that it's the banks putting pressure on UEFA and they are worried about the amount of debt clubs have. He told me a very worrying stat that clubs worldwide owe banks over $100billon. The banks have warned UEFA they have 5 years to try and clean up this and it can't get any worse. There is 8 prem clubs alone that have to meet with banks every month over there large debts. He said you will see lot more players going to china.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Debt is excluded from the FFP calculations. Also banks love the fact clubs borrow money from them, they make their cash from interest. Banks would go out of business if they couldn't loan out cash surely? How else would bankers earn their £5m annual bonuses?

Also, there is no way that clubs owe £100 billion to the banks. The total liabilities of La liga, Serie, Premiership, Bundesliga and the Championat amount to 8.4 billion euros, so £100 billion is a wild exaggeration.

As Fergie said, we are looking at a few players. For me the Lucas Moura deal makes sense. He can play across the front three, can create and score goals and hopefully link up well with Kagawa and Rooney.

I think we need a couple of players. We have Kagawa, and now we need another centre mid. I would prefer either Nuri Sahin or Luka Modric. Then we would have Carrick, Cleverley, Fletcher?, Anderson, Kagawa and Sahin/Modric for the midfield three. Then I would buy a young attacker, potentially Lucas Moura. This means we would have Valencia, Young, Nani, Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez and Moura.

We would then have three great passers behind a great fast attack.

______Toni/Moura____________Nani______

I would be well up for having that midfield/attack mate. I'm a huge Modric fan but if we cannot get him or Sahin I think either Moutinho or Cabaye would also fit the bill. Would love to see Nani and Moura in the same team but not sure it could happen due to financial restraints

I think if we do get moura then he will be used as a striker. SAF has no intention of signing RVP and will not budge from his original "snubbed offer" this is just a smoke screen to keep citeh busy. IMO if we get moura then our starting 11 will be similar to this:

DeGea
Rafa, Smalling, Vidic, Evra
Carrick, Powell/Scholes/Ando/Clevs
Nani/Toni, Rooney, Kagawa
Moura

I think young might leave after one more year aswell

RR

Believable2 Unbelievable3

Yeah I agree...except maybe i'd swap Rooney and Moura...I don't think Moura has the experience just yet to play as a lone striker, but he's fantastic at creating chances! But we will have to sell someone, if not two players! Top of the list are of course Ando and Nani, I could live without both of these to be honest but if Ando goes we will need another CM.

There is a lot of speculation on here about the formation that we play if van Persie and Moura comes in. I'm coming around to the idea of this:

__________DDG
Rafa__Ferdy__Vidic__Evra
____Kag__Carra__Clevs
____Moura__Roo__Rvp

Carrick will sit the deepest, Cleverly/Anderson/Scholes will alternate and Kagawa will be the most advanced of the midfield 3. Moura, Rooney and van Persie are all pretty versatile, but I imagine that van Persie will consistently be the further forward - more of a poacher. Rafa and Evra/Baines will give us good width and we will defend with the back four and 5 in the middle with the first line of defence being the front 3. Valencia, Nani, Young and also Welbeck will give us plenty of option up top to change things around.

RedDevil19

Believable1 Unbelievable4

It would be a problem for the manager trying to fit so many attacking players into the team on a consistent basis. It's a problem he would rather have than not, but still a problem. RVP imo would be a luxury signing. It seems as though losing the league on goal difference has got to Fergie and we are looking to dramatically change our attacking options. The money being spent on him could be used to bring in someone like M'Vila who would be top class for us and give us the bite we need in midfield. That won't happen though.

Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck, RVP, Moura, Young, Kagawa, Valencia, Nani for 3-4 positions? Rotation is vital but too much and we risk losing fluidity.

If RVP and Moura are signed then and played in the same team I'd go

De Gea
Rafael Smalling Vidic Evra
Carrick Cleverley
Moura Rooney Kagawa
RVP

However, I would want to think of a way to include Valencia.

Rjmanutd {Ed004's Note - Would choose the exact same attack. Though I think a left back will be signed and I think a midfielder is needed. I could also see one of Nani or Young sold}

People are living in fantasy land if they think our system will change that much.

When SAF was talking about playing like Barcelona he wasn't talking about the formations that we play he was talking about the fluidity of the play and the killer instinct which we haven't had for a number of years now.

We used to go 1-0, then 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, etc. now we go 1-0 and try to soak up pressure.

In my opinion our formation will change but only slightly, I think we'll line up with a 4-4-1-1/4-5-1 in the league simply because it offers a strong midfield, a crowded midfield and the chance to go forward in numbers (especially in a 4-5-1).

I can see this formation unintentionally at times drifting into a 4-2-3-1 formation. lets for example assume we do sign both RVP and Lucas then depending on the line up will depend on the shape.

If Toni and Young were to start we would most likely look like this:

...........................GK...........................
RB................CB...........CB................LB
TONI......CM.........CM..........CM.....YOUNG
..........................ST............................

Simply because Toni and Young are our more defensive wingers out of the ones we have, however if Nani and Lucas were to start games I think we will end up looking like:

...........................GK.........................
RB................CB...........CB................LB
...................DLP.........B2B..................
Nani.....................AP...................Lucas
..........................ST...........................

Again this would be more attacking because the mindset of the players in question are more attacking.

In Europe I can see us matching 3v3 in midfield, maybe not in a 4-3-3 system because again I think a lot depends on the mentality of the players. For example we could either play:

...........................GK..........................
RB................CB...........CB................LB
..............CM.........CM.........CM.............
.....IF/W................ST...............IF/W....

But at the same time we could play a system which is far more narrow and would work against sides who play with a CDM.

...........................GK.........................
RB................CB...........CB................LB
..............CM.........CM.........CM.............
...........................CF...........................
.................ST................ST.................

The reason this system would work against sides with a CDM is because it would force the holding player to mark the Centre forward and therefore leave our 3 CM players against their 2 players. However it would only work in real effect if the side were playing an out and out 4-3-3 formation with no deeper forward.

I don't think we'll stick with 1 system and a lot depends on the players in question, the game plan the team we're against, etc.

On a completely separate note I don't really understand why we're looking at RVP, I understand his quality but Rooney and him are exactly the same sort of player, I think in terms of interchanging they would be great but if we go out with a 4-4-2 formation then both players will go for the same ball, both will drop deep to collect the ball, etc. it's just what they do naturally as players so I don't think it'll guarantee us two forwards with 30+ goals a season, instead I think it'll mean we have a similar issue to what we had with Ronaldo, 1 will do all the work and the other will put the ball in the net, one will get 30+ the other will get 10 maybe 15.

I'm not complaining because I would like to see how it would work together I would just rather see the £20M be invested into another area of the squad.

two more points I wish to make before I finish;

1) Why are we hating on Hernandez? I think we all knew he wasn't going to do and nobody expected him to have a season like his 1st. I expect him to get 15 goals a season and I'll be happy if he does...he's not a good footballer just a good poacher, admittedly the rest of his game isn't great but his role in the SQUAD is to be an impact sub, he can misplace 300 passes in 5 minutes if he likes as long as he comes away with a goal, hopefully a winning goal then I couldn't care less.

2) Nick Powell will start a LOT of games next season, he has the physicality, the ability and the confidence to be a starter and he will be a starter. maybe not every game but I'm expecting him to play roughly the same amount as Smalling did last season.

If we could have a midfield 3 that has a DLP, a defensive minded midfielder and a B2B midfielder then I think we've got the complete midfield....oh, it just so happens that we can have a midfield identical to that.

...........................GK..........................
RB................CB...........CB................LB
..........Carrick.....Tunnicliffe.....Powell......
.....IF/W................ST...............IF/W....

We could even swap Carrick for Cleverley/Scholes/etc.

Okay, it's very young and quite a raw looking midfield but IMO if you have the talent, physique and confidence then age is just a number.

It's my first 'real' post for a while so be nice if you're going to reply ;). and PLEASE don't say something like Lucas won't play on the left, etc. It's an example of a formation taking into consideration the mentality of the players.

Have a good week everyone!

The Moon.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

There's a lot of effort put into this post and for that reason I don't really want to hate on it too much! But what you've put in this post is pretty much every formation open to every team in the PL! To outline tactics and say how a particular formation could or couldn't work against a team with this player or that player is just too speculative! Formations never last the 90 minutes, that's why 4-4-2 is so common, it can be easily changed and altered during the match. We generally use a 4-2-3-1 system, and have done for the past few years. This would suit our new purchases and youth development for this season and I reckon we'll stick with it. I'd love to see a 4-3-3, but we don't have a midfield 3 strong enough for that unfortunately! I don't want to see RVP here as we have enough goalscorers...Rooney's going to hit at least 30, Hernandez and Welbeck around 15 each and Kagawa and (hopefully) Moura roughly the same...RVP just isn't necessary! We'll have enough cover to use a 4-2-3-1 and I think it can really work and be quite fluid, the trick will be getting one of the 3 to drop back into the midfield when needed...most likely Kagawa!

Everything you need to know about Manchester United target Lucas Moura
Posted on July 23, 2012 by Paulo Freitas
Lucas Moura is a 19-year old player who is currently at São Paulo. He usually wears shirt number 7 at both his club and also at Brazil’s national team.

He started his career at Marcelinho Carioca’s youth academy, and quickly got nicknamed Marcelinho due to supposedly looking like the former Corinthians player. He spent the next years at Juventus-SP and Corinthians’ youth setups before joining São Paulo in 2005.

He shined for the first time in a big tournament in 2010, when he was part of the São Paulo team that won Copa São Paulo de Juniores, the most prestigious youth tournament in Brazil. His success in that tournament enabled him to be promoted to São Paulo’s senior team.

The young star eventually got tired of getting called ‘Marcelinho’ and requested to be called just ‘Lucas’, as Marcelinho Carioca is one of the biggest idols of São Paulo’s arch-rivals Corinthians.

He quickly became known as ‘Lucas Moura’ as he started to get called up for Brazil’s national team, where Lucas Leiva from Liverpool was already a regular part of the team.

His first big competition at Brazil’s national team was the South American Under 20 Championship in January 2011, which Brazil won. He was one of the key players in that team alongside Neymar.

He got his Brazil’s senior team cap in March 2011, in a match against Scotland. He scored his first international goal in September, in a game against Argentina for the Superclásico de las Américas trophy, where only home-based players were eligible to play.

He has been regarded as an important player for São Paulo since then, and is arguably the most promising player to come from São Paulo’s academy since Kaká.

Style

Lucas Moura is not a tall player (only 1.73m or 5’8’’) but is fairly strong for someone of his height, which allows him to handle more physical players better than expected.

He is right-footed and is a very versatile player, being able to play as an attacking midfielder and as a right winger, but currently prefers to play as a forward.

His main qualities are his speed and his dribbling skills, which help him anticipate and overcome defenses, making him an effective forward at São Paulo. as his finishing is also pretty good although could be improved. These qualities and the fact he is relatively strong despite being short could prove useful in more physical leagues such as the English Premier League.

Lucas also has good passing skills, but he seldom takes advantage of that ability, preferring to dribble rather than to pass, also annoying teammates and fans alike.

This poor decision making has been criticized by most of his previous coaches, who however failed to fix the problem. He also does not try long shots as much as he perhaps should.

He also needs to improve his consistency and his concentration, as he often disappears during games, especially in important ones such as playoff games and derbies.

These issues have lead many São Paulo fans to regard him as a choker and some pundits went as far as to comparing him to the likes of Denílson and Lulinha, both of which were expected to achieve far more than they did.

Future

Despite all the problems mentioned above, he has been showing evolution, as for example he originally relied mainly on his speed, eventually learning how to use his dribbling skills as well. It’s also important to take into account that he is still only 19 years old, and thus is still somewhat raw.

And unlike Ganso, for example, he is not an injury prone player and does not get involved in any problems or controversies off the pitch.

Once he can improve his mentality on the pitch, he will be set to become one of the top Brazilian players, and will be comparable to Neymar, who already shows maturity on the pitch despite being only 20 years old.

But right now he is still behind not only Neymar, but also Oscar, who is a more complete, decisive and consistent player than Lucas.

After giving it some extra thought I can actually see Kagawa being used as a left winger and Moura/Valencia on the right then Rooney in the hole with RVP or another striker up top then maybe Carrick and Cleverley in midfield even though i think Cleverley is a very poor player regardless of his injury record etc then the usual at the back of rafael, Vidic, Ferdy/Smalls and then Evra/Baines and DDG

Can't see Kagawa being played on the wings when we have players with more speed to play in that position.

I think if Moura comes in he will be played in the CM position to replace Scholes.

I think we will be playing a 4-3-3 regardless of van Persie and Moura. If they both come in then we'll have a front 3 of Moura, Rooney and Van Persie. Carrick will sit in midfield, Cleverly/Scholes will play alongside him and Kagawa will be the most advanced of the three of them.

I can see some games going with a 4 3 3 with Moura on the right of the front 3 with Rooney in the centre and Welbeck (or the highly unlikely RvP) on the left of the 3 and a midfield 3 of Carrick, Scholes and Cleverley with Kagawa a bench option for a plan B.

Other games we'll go with Kagawa behind Rooney and Moura on the bench as an option.

Looks like you didn't leave a name mate.

Also Ando is nowhere near good enough. He is never fit and has had continual knee issues since his ligament injury. Read his comments on last season 'I played for around 5-6games and my knee had felt fine but the pain came back'.

He is finished. If he seems to think how he played in 5-6 games is a good enough to be considered a CM player for a club as big as ours then he is kidding himself. He is hoping we get past 1st Sept then he can bugger off back to the treatment room.

The fact you can comment on not rating Fletch but rate Ando speaks volumes for your knowledge of the game. Which I think stretches not much further than Football Manager!

Oh and its DCM not DFM!

That's just not cricket and shows what type of person you are. This site is only as good as it's posters and you may well have scared off a decent one with your rant.

Also, not once in your post do you use IMO or words to that effect. So I was reminding you that he is entitled to his opinion.

I do not rate Fletcher because he runs up and down the field like a headless chicken. His passes are nothing to write home about, his tackles aren't very good, his close control and skill are non-existent. I have watched him for many years and seen him take the place of people in the team who are better players than him, most namely Carrick.

I saw more from Ando and Cleverley in the first 5 games of last season than I ever have of Fletcher in all the many years I have watched him. And hes Scottish! :-p

In your next post/reply you swear at a lady. Good for you! (I assume Ellie is a lady)

FredtheRed

I can see where you are coming from in regards to me not having put IMO or the likes in my post. So for that I apologise I should have been more clearer. Maybe this could have toned down the kind of aggressive read it makes out.

I will however still ask for some sort of explination as to why the OP rates Ando and not Fletch. You say he runs around like a headless chicken and cannot tackle? Well either you have not watched him as many times as you say you have or you cannot see the defensive work and covering that has to go hand in hand with running around the park.

Carrick has a better passing range and IMO that is it. He doesn't cover more grass, cover runs, mark players, tackle or press as well as Fletch and that is why SAF was using him in all the important games. Even AW pointed him out as anti football as he did such a sterling job at stifiling their attacks.

If someone is going to call me arrogant with no knowledge of me personally then they can f**k off. Simple as that. You also replied to my post by saying I should 'try not to be a prat', are you implying I am one?

If he/she had said my post seemed arrogant then fair enough but it said I seem it. It was then followed by a sarcastic point about grammar to which they have probably missed the joke I was pointing towards yourself.

All I was trying to say was that we all have our opinions and are entitled to them but your comments seemed a bit harsh on a poster who gave a good post (even if you disagree with the post) and he was a first time poster as well and IMO should be handled even more delicately. I could be wrong - he could be a 6ft brick out-house, but this site is only as good as it's posters (and eds who do a sterling job ;-) ) so let's not scare them away.

I rate Ando's potential a lot higher than that of Fletcher. Fletch, although a grafter and a true team man, will never be as good or create as many chances or have individual glimpses of brilliance that can win amatch on his own as Ando. I know SAF loves the boy and that to me would point to why he has started so many games when I, along with other fans, have been crying out for SAF to ditch him and buy somebody else.

Fletch is like marmite-you either love him or hate him and I do understand why people do love him but for all those reasons stated, I am not a lover.

FredtheRed

Agree0 Disagree1

Jono - i agree with you mate about him being mad for not rating Fletch when he was an integral part of our team when fit, but i must admit i also rate Anderson quite highly although his injury record is woeful at best so therefore i would have to let him go and try and bring in someone like Witsel or Dembele.

Agree0 Disagree1

Ellie

If you are going to put words into inverted comma's at least put them both in! Also the correct positioning of a ! or a ? is directly after the last letter of the sentence!

At least you are bringing something valid and thought provoking to the discussion though!

FredtheRed

Yes we are all entitled to an opinion but even if mine was a bit more aggressive than normal there was still no reason for the prat comment?

The explanation you have given is flawed to a degree. Fletch and Ando cannot be compared directly as their styles of play do not mean that we would be playing one or the other in any given line up. What I was arguing for is Fletch IMO is a better player for us in his position than Ando will ever be. You are right that he has always split opinion but has worked his ass off and proved all wrong that he was good enough to do a job for us. Ando on the other hand has had our faith in him since day 1 and produced some good stuff 1st season even out of position but since has had 4 seasons of continuous injuries and form problems. Yes Fletch has off days but as his game relies heavily on effort and energy he can perform far more consistently than Ando has ever looked like doing.

Add to that Fletch has covered all CM jobs, RM and RB, his ability to do well in these roles gives him an added bonus over Ando. I think he may even have more goals and assists on game average than Ando, further watering down Ando's case IMO.

A few thoughts / questions for anyone who is willing to reply...

I haven't seen too much of Moura, and I was wondering why everyone seems to think if he comes he will play out left? All the footage I've seen shows him playing out right or through the centre.

I am assuming people are saying play Moura on the left as Valencia is the best right winger we have / just been given the no. 7 / player of the year / most assits / etc etc.

I then see a few Ed's (mainly Ed002, I think - sorry if I'm wrong, work means I have to zip through the site, trying not to get caught!) saying the Kagawa might play out left. If that is the case, surely it's curtains for one of Young / Nani?! Personally I think / hope if would Young, regardless of him only being with us for a year. But with SAF you never know, Young can play pretty much across the front 4, but then can Nani. I always thought we played our best with a fluid front 4.

Too further complicate things, Van Persie is heavily linked with us. Surely, if we spend (potentially) upwards of £20+ million, whatever about his wages, on him he can't sit on the bench? Yes Berbatov is on the bench, but that's kinda different, and I'm pretty sure he will leave. What then happens with Welbeck / Chico, will they be happy to sit on the bench? Chico I think can be the next "baby faced assassin", but Welbeck I can see grumbling a bit on the bench

As for the remainder of the squad...

Evans / Smalling: As they are injured is there sufficient cover in the reserves?

Evra: Is Baines definitely coming? Again, is there sufficient cover in the reserves? Expecially with Fabio on loan

RB: seems covered between Rafa, Jones, Smalling. My preference is Rafa, only if he gets his positional sense for corners sorted!

Jones: Is he the new John O'Shea?

Fletcher: Will he ever return, I hope he does, but can't see him being the force he was

Rooney / Carrick starts, simple as

Scholes / Giggs: I can only assume they have been told they will have a reduce involvement, particularly Giggs, with Scholes being called upon for tighter matches

Anderson: Is he fit? Is he really any good? He did look good beside Clevs at the start of the season last year, and was probably unlucky to get injured

Clevs: Same as the above

Powell: I know nothing about this kid, and I will assume we will see a bit of him across all competitions next year

Bebe / Macheda: I assume they are in the shop window and will end up sold or on loan

To finish off, I'll say if we get Moura, Baines and RVP, I reckon the team could look like:

DDG

Rafa Rio Vidic Baines

Carrick Kagawa

Valencia - Rooney - Nani / Moura

RVP

Thoughts? Questions? Comments?

Sorry for the long post!

RedDub {Ed004's Note - I don't think Kagawa could play that deep and he has played left wing for Dortmund before. So if you put Nani or Moura RW and Kagawa LW along with Cleverley in CM I think it would be a very good team with a very fluid attack. The only reason I wouldn't start Valencia is because he is very one dimensional}

Believable0 Unbelievable3

Thanks Ed004, I suppose I kinda answered my own question (well one of them) when saying that we looked our best with a fluid front four. Moura, Rooney, RVP & Kagawa could all easily move around, but so could Nani? It really comes down to the team we're up against and what sort of tactics SAF is using. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

RedDub {Ed004's Note - I think Nani will be sold if Moura is bough unfortunately. But I think it would be one hell of an attack. You have two players who will hit a min of around 30 goals. Kagawa and Moura who I feel will be looking to hit 20 goals each and you still have Hernandez, Welbeck, Valencia, Young and possibly Nani who will all find the back of the net. And even Baines and Vidic in defence will score a few.}

Agree0 Disagree2

Ed004, I really hope not. For as frustrating as Nani is, he was the only player last year that really got me excited when he was on the ball. Plus I think he was class at the Euro's. Maybe he's turned a corner. My preference is for Young to be shipped out if someone has to go.

PS: That would be a crazy amount of goals, fingers crossed!

RedDub {Ed004's Note - I agree I really rate Nani and still have faith in him}

Agree3 Disagree1

A lot to tackle. Firstly, I do not think Moura will play on the left. He's a typical attacking midfielder who has at time played on the right wing. He could be 'converted' into a deadly winger though with his pace and control. He certainly looks like he has the capability to play anywhere in the attacking line-up... but I think Kagawa is better suited to the left than Moura (although he's also better through the middle). Whether that means it's curtains for Nani I don't know. He's inconsistent - but also very versatile and on his day a world beater. I'd rather he stayed unless another winger is brought in. We've always had 4 strikers for 2 positions - and as such I don't see why we can't have 3 wingers for 2 positions (with two players who COULD play on the wing if required but are more likely to play through the middle).

RVP would only make us stronger - but I agree that it leaves Welbeck's future up in the air. I'd also argue for the kind of money being talked about there are better strikers available.

As for your other thoughts -

We should start the season with Jones, Vidic and Rio fit and smalling should be back within a month of the start of the season. I'm not sure when Evans is due back - but don't think signing another CB for the sake of 1 month would be a great investment.

There's been nothing official on Baines yet. We have a very promising young lb in the reserves (although from what I've seen of him he's not ready just yet) - but you forget that we still have Evra.

I don't think Jones is the new John O'Shea - he's just behind Vidic and Smalling when it comes to our best CB's. In a year or two he will displace Vidic from the team assuming he continues to develop at the speed he has been.

It doesn't look like Fletcher will return.

Rooney will start every game for which he's available. Carrick probably wont depending on the fitness of Ando and Clevs and whether or not we sign a new central midfielder with defensive qualities.

Giggs' effectiveness last season seemed greatly diminished. I don't expect him to make more than 25 appearances next season. Scholes' involvement will depend on whether another CM is signed or the fitness of Ando and Clevs.

Anderson looked thinner than I've ever seen him today. Him and Clevs are still returning to match fitness - but with Ando on tour I expect him to be fit for the start of the season (if he stay at the club that is). Clevs may need a few weeks depending on how far team GB progress in the Olympics.

Powell is another young prospect. He looks OK - but I'm not expecting him to play much more than carling cup games. That said I hear we have rejected a few loan offers - so maybe SAF has other ideas.

Bebe + Macheda will probably leave if anybody comes in for them. We've sent them out on loan a few times with the option to buy and noone has taken up the option. I'd like to see Bebe given a chance if possible - but Macheda's attitude annoys me to the point where I wouldn't mind if he was simply released!

Your team probably wouldn't work. I don't think Kagawa could play that deep and were he to play further forwards Carrick would struggle. As I began by saying I'd expect Moura to play in the middle or on the right at a push. Truth be told I can't see Rooney, RVP, Moura and Kagawa in the same starting 11 without a CDM or Moura and Kagawa being asked to play out wide.

----------Ando--Clevs----------
Moura-------------------Kagawa
-------------Rooney-------------
---------------RVP--------------

or my preferred formation/starting 11 if we were to sign a cdm-

--------------M'Villa-------------
Moura-----------------------Nani
--------Rooney-----Kagawa------
---------------RVP---------------

- but I still don't see us signing RVP and expect the following...

----------Ando--Clevs----------
Nani---------------------Kagawa
-------------Moura--------------
------------Rooney--------------

T0MB0Z {Ed004's Note - I think all those teams are too open defensively. Teams will just run through the middle}

Agree2 Disagree2

TOMBOZ, thanks for the response.

Just to back to you on a few points. I don't think we need another CB, especially just for 1 month. I am though curious about our reserves, same can be said about LB, Evra is fine for now, but with Fabio gone out of loan, does this leave us short on cover?

Putting your second team to the side, as I don't think we'll sign a CDM (unless the Dembele rumours today are true) I think both your other teams look good, with the one change of Carrick in for either Ando or Clev

I too think Bebe should be given a chance, if only for the fact it could be a great story for a movie... oh wait that's been done. In all seriousness, there must be something there for SAF to spend that much money on him, surely?!

RedDub

Agree1 Disagree0

Ed004 - correct me if I'm wrong - but weren't Ando and Clevs our preferred MF partnership at the start of the season? They didn't look too open to me?

I can see how one might think the second is a little open - but anyone who's watched M'Villa play on a weekly basis will know that he'd be more than capable of shielding the defense from everyone bar City, Chelski and one or two other teams (against whom we'd play Carrick next to him).

T0MB0Z {Ed004's Note - I rate M'Vila highly and I say it would be enough against the lower teams in the league but the point with Cleverley and Anderson was based on the start of the season. We had something like the most shots at our goal after the first 5 games of the season. It was no surpirse to me that De Gea was a nervous wreck}

Agree2 Disagree0

Why have so many people suddenly forgotten about Valencia? He's arguably one of the best wingers in the PL, to leave him out of a starting 11 would be crazy! If Moura comes, either Nani or Ando will go unfortunately! I love Nani, and I agree with an above point about him being the only exciting player last year. But I think he'd be wasted in a team with Kagawa, Moura and Valencia. Sell him now while he's at his most valuable. Or sell Ando and use the funds to get a player like Witsel who can ultimately take over from Carrick. Maybe even sell them both...we have cover for both positions if we buy another CM so they aren't really needed! I'd like this as a formation come August...
De Gea
Rafael-Vidic-Jones-Evra
Carrick-Witsel
Valencia-Moura-Young
Rooney

I wouldn't like to see RVP at United, he isn't needed! Don't want another LB unless it's Izzaguire and I think Young will surprise a lot of people this season...I really rate him and hope he does well. Gradually introduce Powell into the team as well as a CM, kid's got a great future at the club. For games where we really want to push up and score goals we could easily adopt a 4-3-3 with a front 3 of Moura-Rooney-Kagawa, which would be pretty daunting to defend against!

Andy

Agree1 Disagree3

RedDub -

As of the moment I rate Carrick more highly than both Clev and Ando - but the two seem to play very well together.

As for Bebe I actually think SAF dropped the ball with that one. From what I've read he signed him having not seen him play. I'm not saying he's no good - but that had he been scouted we may not have spent as much as we did on him / signed him at all.

Ed004? Who would you be playing in the center of midfield?

T0MB0Z {Ed004's Note - Carrick alongside either Anderson or Cleverley out of the current bunch}

Agree3 Disagree0

They were our preferred partnership but just look at how many goals, and shots on goal, we conceded in the first part of the season when they played together. Still think they weren't very open?

#ags

Agree1 Disagree0

Andy. Valencia is too one dimensional. His lack of versatility would negate the strength in depth we have in our front line tactically. Rooney, Nani, Kagawa and Moura could all switch positions at will throughout the game which will be deadly on the counter attack and will allow us to change things up without making a substitution if things aren't going well. Valencia is a RW. Certainly a very good one - but unfortunately nothing more.

Wagner Ribeiro, agent to Lucas Moura, has responded to the latest bout of speculation relating to the Sao Paulo winger. In an interview with Gazeta Esportivo, he stated: "This is speculation in the English newspapers. All parties have to agree - the player, the buying club and the seller. I guarantee 100 per cent that Lucas is not signed [with United]. He is focused on the Olympics. It's a London newspaper. This kind of news planted is very common in England."

Hi Guys

On Friday SAF tells the World that we have put a bid in for RVP, today he says we have an interest in Lucas Moura. Then at 11.59 today I have received and e-mail from United Ticketing telling me that there are a Limited number of season tickets still available.

Is that just me being cynical

I'm sure it would be nice to have both but can we afford both? As well as Valencia, Kagawa and Young. I'd rather just have one and have money left to strengthen CM/LB

Gav {Ed004's Note - I agree I would sell one of Nani and Young, preferably Young, if it meant we could strengthen left back and centre mid. Baines seems the likely option and then someone like Moutinho, Modric, or Dembele or even M'Villa and play either Cleverley or Powell beside him instead of Carrick with the other mids I mentioned}

Ed004 You asked how Powell has been doing on tour imo he has looked Premiership class with the stints hes had on the pitch he always wants the ball, finds space easily, dribbles great, fast feet , good engine and looks threatening going forward but i am not sure if he is Manchester United class yet maybe a West Brom player atm but maybe we should chuck him in at the deep end which i would as i think he is very much up to it.

George {Ed004's Note - So could you see him playing in a two man midfield with someone like Carrick. Also I have been told he is similar type of player to Gerrard. I have never seen him play so can't form an opinion on him so am really looking forward to the next match}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I couldnt see why not to be honest, he played behind the striker before he joined so he is very attacking but so far for United he has looked very level headed and actually very disciplined so if Fergie fancies taking a risk with him i could see him lining up with Carrick, to be honest i would prefer him to Cleverley as i think he is very over rated. Regrading the likeness to Gerrard, i can see where its came from but he is more technically gifted dribbling wise and pace wise compared to Gerrard but Gerrard has the passing ability and vision. To be honest i could see Powell being turned into a box2box player.

George {Ed004's Note - Who could you see beside Cleverley. Carrick or Powell. Which of them do you think is over rated lol}

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Cleverley is very over rated.

George {Ed004's Note - So do I but I think he could be world class}

Agree1 Disagree0

Stints?

He came on once for 30 minutes, not sure you can judge a player one way or the other on that amount of time in a pre season friendly. He looked good, but so did Lingaard.

GDS

Agree2 Disagree0

I have seen him multiple times before aswell though GDS.

George

Agree0 Disagree0

George, unless people have watched Cleverley closely from a young age, they will not have a clue what he can do judging him on last season alone. Cleverley is technically gifted and if he can get a run of games together people will see just how good he can be. I advise you to watch the 2nd half of the shield (2011), watch him against Arsenal and Spurs and watch him against Barcelona preseason. Okay there was no Messi and Xavi, but he played against Iniesta, Thiago and Busquets etc and was very impressive. People will quickly forget someone's worth when they haven't seen them for months/year, many did the same with Valencia. He needs a good run of games and he will be a massive improvement to our midfield. Like SAF said when he was injured, Thomas will be a massive loss. He was missed that much we had to re-sign Scholes.

He is being so uncharacteristically vocal and this theory has crossed my mind. Also by publicly confirming the players he wants will also put Gill and the Glazers under pressure to make things happen this summer. He hasn't yet mentioned his interest for Baines, but he defo wants him. So if he names the three that he wants and none are signed, how will that make the Glazers look?

Sydney!

^^ I couldnt agree more, it is nothing like him to announce interest early in negotiations or even at all before there pretty much signed. I find it too much of a coincidence that its happening when the flotation is announced etc maybe the Glazers have gave Fergie a bigger leash and are trying to make the club look more appealing to investors or whatever. I am probably reading too much into it but im very excited about who we are targeting and being linked with but lets hope some deals materialise..

George

Believable0 Unbelievable0

23 Jul 2012 14:21:04
So SAF has confirmed he wants RVP and Lucas Moura. He also praised the Glazers during his interview with Bob Cass. If its true that Arsenal want close to 30m for RVP then i honestly cant see us signing him. To be honest im not really sure i even want Van Persie, He's 29 in 2 weeks, He's only really had 1 injury free season since he signed for Arsenal and i think if we signed him it would get in the way of Welbeck becoming a better player.

I've only seen Lucas play about 10-11 times but ive been impressed with him. It's a lot of money to pay but i think he could turn out to be a very good player.

But at the moment its all just still in talks so we'll have to see what happens. If i had to sway either way id say neither RVP or Lucas will sign for us, I hope im wrong. But i think SAF is just praising the Glazers and yes we might have put bids in but we might just be putting bids in that we know wont be accepted just to keep the fans happy, As i said, I hope im wrong and we do sign Lucas and a LB. No RVP for me if i had the choice.

I know its just about as attacking as it gets and we could only implement the system against weaker teams imo but imagine the attacking ability against them.

Believable0 Unbelievable4

Can't see us going to 3 at the back at all, SAF is still finding it hard moving away from 442/4411!

If Moura arrives I would assume Nani will go. Either that or we could go for a fluid front 4 in some games:

Moura___Kagawa___Nani
________Rooney_______

(with all interchanging)

...then use Valencia and Young more when we revert to 4411

Gav {Ed004's Note - It would be a brilliant attack and only bettered if RVP was signed. We would have so many options.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed004

I'm a big admirer of RVP and would salivate at the thought of him and Rooney up front...but, yes there's a but, putting his age and injury record to one side - I think there'd be a danger of affecting the balance of the team if RVP came in. I'd like to see us play 4231 with Kagawa in the hole, with penty of fluidity and the 3 behind Rooney providing the first line of defence i.e. pressure in the attacking 3rd. With RVP in I can only see us playing 4411 again with Rooney behind him - which would restrict our fluidity and also the likes of Kagawa/Moura would have to play in deeper or wider poitions, which would be a shame

I have stated I would prefer Dembele and I would play Rooney in the hole with Kagawa out left and RVP up top. Then you have players like Welbeck, Hernandez, Valencia, Nani and Young}

Believable1 Unbelievable1

I see your point Ed I said Kagawa would play on the left but got shot down on here a while back. Imo Nani has to be sold if Moura is signed no matter what and i hope so much that if Moura comes he isnt ruined and out on the left . {Ed004's Note - I think it would take a few seasons before we would see Moura on the left but I think he is interchangeable so we could play a fluid front 4}

Agree0 Disagree0

Hmmm so do you see Moura as a replacement for someone or an extra buy? I think he is the replacement for Valencia after two seasons maybe as he isnt getting younger and especially as a winger he needs pace

Agree0 Disagree1

Valencia isn't being replaced by anyone. He has just been given the number 7 shirt and he was our player of the year last year. Also when it comes to pace there aren't many quicker than Valencia when he gets going and that includes Moura.

Rjmanutd {Ed004's Note - I think Valencia will be the first choice winger this season but he will gradually be pushed out imo if Moura fulfills his potential}

Agree1 Disagree0

One thing that irritates me about a lot of football fans is the current trend of thinking players are too old when they hit 28-29. Sometimes it is a valid point eg when you are paying big money for a transfer but for a player who is at the club I don't think it is a big deal.

IMO Valencia will be a key player at United for another 3-4 seasons. I honestly think out of our current 3 wingers he will be here longest. He gives us a different more direct option. Even if Moura arrives and becomes a top class player he will struggle to get Valencia out of the side IMO.

Rjmanutd

Agree2 Disagree0

I agree Valencia will play a big part for us over the next few years but it's always good to have 3 class wide men to rotate. Especially given Valencia is quite one-dimensional so we could choose whoever suits the opposition best on the day. In an ideal world we would have Valencia, Moura and Nani but in reality it's more likely Nani would leave and we'd have Young as the 3rd option

I noticed in Fergies statement that he is saying the club is trying hard to bring other players to OT.

Ed who do you realistically see us purchasing?

Also ano RVP is turning 29 but Fergie has admired him for a good few seasons now and we all know what he is capable of so I think if he would get us that extra goals to win a championship and in europe over the next 3-4 season 20Mil would be a snip. he does have injurys concerns but thats where wellbeck etc will get there chance to shine.

Ledonowski signing would also be good as linking him up with Kawaga again could be interesting. Havent seen much of him to be honest - Ed who would you rather see?

what happenend to the youngster from Chile we have 1st option on ? {Ed004's Note - I am not sure I wouldn't mind signing either RVP or Lewandowski. Both would be awesome signings. Would be interesting to see the team we would play. It would be a very fluid front four with Moura, Rooney, Kagawa and Lewandowksi or RVP. I think we would need a left back though and a cm so I can not see were we will get all the money for that. I am not sure if Jones could play in cdm and then cleverley or Anderson along side.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Money is the millian dollar question so to speak.

If we did bid 32 mil for Hazard that would be the money earmarked for Moura.

Money for Park, possibly Berbatov plus the other reserve players that left may cover a left back.

If Fergie had a reported 50 Mil warchest that may cover the RVP?lewandowski signing.

I think every Utd fan thinks we need a holding midfielder who knows where that cash would come from?. Maybe oxfam will donate us one or something!

With SAF confirming a strong interest in Moura, which is odd in itself, I thought of an experimental side that I think is semi-plausible. Personally, Tony did a wonderful job as a right wing back this year. I also rate Rafa very highly, I would love to see him become our first choice RB for years to come. Saying this, I think that maybe we could play a side looking something like this

---------De Gea---------
-----Smalls-Vidic--------
-Tony--------------Rafa-
-----Carrick--Jones------
-Nani---Kagawa---Lucas-
----------Rooney---------

not my ideal sqaud, but it is a way to field Tony, Nani, Lucas, and Kagawa all at the same time

Agree0 Disagree6

No Nani Syd? Thought you fancied him for his interchangeability... You assuming Nani goes, or picking Young ahead of him?

DodgyBanter {Ed004's Note - This is to Sydneys post. I personally would prefer Dembele to Witsel as I have not see much of Witsel and Dembele seems to be a hard worker who is good going forward and is a true box to box midfielder. Also if RVP was signed I think a team of De Gea, Rafael, Smalling, Vidic, Baines, Carrick, Dembele, Moura, Rooney, Kagawa and RVP. Though honestly if that happens I think Nani will be sold. Also for a long time I have been against Baines but I think just for his defensive attributes I would go for him because that is a very attacking team}

Agree0 Disagree0

'Syd', not too different. I know everyone always uses Barca as a model, and I don't think Dani Alves played 10 minutes of defense the entire year. So i think that Tony could be utilized very effectively as a RWB imo

Sparty On

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally syd i cant see us signing a left back, i still think fergy admires evra to much, we defenately need one and i could be wrong as fergy is looking at brady and blackett to see if we already have competition at the club, but it is a great chance for blackett to stamp a place if we dont sign one.
as a cm i would love Khedira but it is so unlikely, however it wouldn't be bad if we got sahin on loan with and option to buy. as for tony V you cant leave him out and he will be wasted at right back unless aganst poor teams. young is only a squad player and only useful against mid table teams and lesser teams in europe.

_______De Gea_______
Raph_Smalls__Vida___Evra
_____Carrick__Sahin___
Valencia__Kagawa___Moura
_______Rooney

Although how come we are talking as if moura will come to england and be an instant hit, we are expecting so much from such a young man. Ronaldo had to earn his place in the starting line up with sub appearances. If Moura comes in and adapts straight away that is a bonuses, I think Fergy has saw potential to improve on not an instant game winner. Many people say they are frustrated with nani when he plays, but for the first couple of sesons peoplemay be pulling their hair out with moura

aaallj5 {Ed004's Note - Sahin would be a brilliant signing}

Agree0 Disagree1

Dodgy, I believe Nani will be sold to balance the books if Moura is signed. I do prefer Nani to Young. I think we will have too much wing cover with Moura and we wouldn't miss Nani.

Ed004, I think if we played with two attacking LB's we would need Carrick and a tough tackling midfielder. I would say Witsel is better than Dembele defensively, although I do like Dembele. It's also thought that we will buy either RVP or Moura, unlikely we will go for both.

Sparty, I think we can play two attacking fullbacks as long as we have a Witsel in the middle to help out Carrick and the CB's. Even Evra could be okay in that scenario. I still think we will sign Baines though.

Sydney! {Ed004's Note - Thats why I have warmed to signing Baines. I was initially against him signing and wanted Izaguirre but Baines is better defensively. So I don't think Witsel would be required then. Carrick would be able to cover for Rafael who is imo very good defensively apart from when he gets rash but he is cutting that out more recently. Also I missed the two friendlies so from what I have read, Kagawa looked very impressive, how did Powell play? Could he be the CM we are looking for this season. Would be like having a young Rooney and Ronaldo again watching Powell and Moura play}

Agree0 Disagree0

You can not play Moura on the left honestly which is where im struggling as he plays on the right or through the middle and our number 7 will not get dropped and we have just signed Kagawa who isnt gonna sit on the bench so maybe Rafael at left back Valencia pushed back then Moura in at right wing?

Read a post there by I AM KLOOT i think, mentioning this is fergies last season and just have to say i couldnt agree more. Last season we bought replacments for the back lines older players and this season we are buying replacments for our midfielders. Our strikers arent old so dont need replacing. Fergie is leaving a young exciting team behind, thus trying to safegaurd the future of united as a top club.

25 years at the helm and securing another 5/6 after he leaves.

Im immagrating to oz in october so will not get to go to old trafford this season for any games! But i will forever remember a mad fergie jumping out of his seat up to the fourth official roaring at him and all 730000 behind him doing the same. Good times

Flimbo...wow.

A few things, firstly how can you possibly say SAF doesn't love the club. And in which strange universe do you think it is best for the club to have Ferguson loose his job. If he get sacked he's going to be away from MU for at least a year, while the Glazers get kicked out by protesting supporters not buying tickets or shirts and at his age do you think he'll return?

Then lets have a think about what effect loosing Sir Alex and having massive protests will have on our Global Fan Base. Do you think they're as loyal as us who know about the problems with the Glazers, no. We would loose so much support from the less loyal supporters which although may be deemed 'Glory Hunters' are still very important to the club.

It is has never been more important for SAF to stay at Man Utd as he is what is keeping this Club where it is. I am not pro-glazer, I am pro-ferguson and I'm sure this will irritate you but if you are anti-ferguson you are anti-Man Utd because he is every bit as important to the History of the Club as Sir Matt Busby or any player. I want the Glazers out as much as the next fan but keep your argument with them.

Finally when the hell did I suggest SAF was telephathic. Can you please keep your argument reasonable without resorting to fantasy.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm starting to think the same. Is SAF now trying a different approach to actually land his top targets? Having lost so many in recent times. Perhaps he thinks in some way Moura or RVP will be more determined to join if they see the manager publicly showing his interest, somehow pushing through a transfer at a reasonable(ish) price. We shall see, I may be well wide of the mark but it certainly seems the boss is willing to be more vocal this summer, whatever the reason

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

He is being so uncharacteristically vocal and this theory has crossed my mind. Also by publicly confirming the players he wants will also put Gill and the Glazers under pressure to make things happen this summer. This is just for the peeps who do not understand the Moura situation. Sao Paulo HAVE accepted a £26m offer in principle, that is 80% of the overall fee. It's still to be agreed by the player and his agents who will receive the rest. Ed002 has maintained that it's not the club's president who is hard work, it's his difficult agent. Agreeing £26m with the club was the easy part, it's agreeing a deal with the rest that will be difficult. As it stands we are not much better off now than we were a week ago. The agent and other reps remain the hardest challenge. We need the club to build a rapport with this agent as it's key to completing the deal. It could also give us the edge when the next Lucas Moura becomes available in the future.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - You need to be careful that you are not jumping the gun a little here Syd.}

He is finished. If he seems to think how he played in 5-6 games is a good enough to be considered a CM player for a club as big as ours then he is kidding himself. He is hoping we get past 1st Sept then he can bugger off back to the treatment room.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post but I think you forgot to leave your name!

Anderson - I really want him to succeed as I like that style of player but I don't think he will be a hit with us because 1) I worry that his injuries will be a long term issue 2) when he has had a run in the team his form, fitness and confidence seem to wobble after a few games - he doesn't take games by the scruff of the neck, which he should do in the position he plays

Rafael - I think he has great promise for a 21 year old but still has a lot to work on. His quality in the final 3rd and rashness in challenges will need improving if he is to be a 'world class RB' as many have already stated he will be! At the same time, those slating him need to remember he is a 21 year old from a different footblling culture so needs time to improve

Fletcher - unfortunately you make a valid point about him IMO although he does have his merits. He was a valuable member of the squad and provided much needed 'steel' but I've never thought he's good enough to be a regular starter if we are going to dominate the PL/CL again. He had one great season where he looked an allrounder but he faded a bit for me after that. He is not technically brilliant but does a good job. For me he would be a squad player for us if fit - replacing Carrick on days wen we need that little extra 'bite' but you couldn't realistically play them both next to each other and expect them to outclass City, Real, Barca etc. on the day. Perhaps we are looking at Dembele as a squad player to replace him? I have loads of respect for Fletcher as he's put in so much graft for us and is United through and through...but it's funny how since he's not played for ages his 'ability' seems to have rocketed in the memories of some on this page

Gav

Agree0 Disagree0

Gav

I will always defend the grafters in our team as the team would not be successful without them. I would take a guy giving 100% with fire in his belly over an overweight Brazilian who cannot stay fit any day of the week. The fact Fletch is Scottish and our Captain probably adds some weight to my preference to him but I feel he can offer us more than Carrick never mind Ando. He had better movement and although his passing range couldn't match Carricks his drive, defensive ability and energy levels were all better than him IMO.

Ellie

What is it exactly that I am being arrogant about? I think you will find that every person on here that posts their own opinion is being 'self opinionated'. That is the whole point in a fan forum like this one, where fans can post their own opinions and others can point out why they believe something different.

Don't like it? Then f**k off.

I find it hard to belive tbh. Just another load of paper BS

MUFC1990

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think what It was mate was that £29million overall wasnt enough because that INCLUDED the 30% family and agent percentage of Moura. His family own some of his rights so that would of worked out that Sao Paulo would only get £20.3 million and £9million to his family and agent. That wasnt enough for Sao Paulo so it was rejected as they want more than £20mill.

Since then I heard Mouras family arranged a deal where they sold or forfeited the percantage of sale to get the deal done faster. So therefore the new deal has ALL of the £27million bid going to Sao Paulo.....that of course they will/have accepted

lewis.no.9

It's simple really mate. The club will receive 80% of the overall fee, the player/father will receive the rest. The media reported that we have agreed a fee for Lucas, if it's true I'm ecstatic. I always said I thought he was worth £28m - so if we're only paying £26m we have gotten a great player at a good price.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

He would end up costing us around £38m in reality. The player/father will receive around £6m, agent probably around £5m, then there's the VAT on the agent fees of around £1m. I will not include the VAT on the fee as the club would get that back at a later date. But overall the player would cost around £38m excluding salary.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - It is a little more complicated than thay Syd.}

Would you come out in public and slag your own boss off?

Thought not..

I feel that SAF is very much to blame for our transfer dealings-but I totally agree with him! There are leaches in football that want to take money out of the game to line their own pockets, and SAF wants none of it. Players commanding 200k a week when they're in their 20's and not even kicked a ball in a quality league or team, and agents fees going to 5m for a smooth transfer taking a £20m deal to £25m than another £2m for the greedy player so we end up paying £27m for a £20m rated player!

I totally agree with our transfer policy; letting greedy young players with poor agents go and not breaking the bank to sign somebody who is a total risk. This gives our club balance and finical security. Let's face it, we can't afford another Veron or Berbatov.

Even if we had a sugar daddy, I don't think SAF would pay stupid amounts and FFP will be in next season so hopefully this will help us and the league.

We are a well run club with good control over finances and long may that continue! We can still get good players like Powell, Kagawa, Chiquerito without screwing ourselves.

I also, take a similar view. I would love us to buy a player like Hazard or Moura but it all depends on the price, including agents fees which I think is the biggest stumbling block. Should we really pay over £30m for unproven players then give their agent £5m for the pleasure? That's before we even start to pay them a wage! I understand the market dictates the value of players - even if that is £30m for a youngster - but then there are agents out there who are only interested in earning a premium over and above that value, which I would imagine would pee SAF off, to say the least

Let's hope an acceptable deal can be struck with Moura though, the manager will know exactly what he values him at

S.Paulo's pres J.Juvêncio talked to 'Jovem Pan' and denied Lucas is leaving. His agent told the same to CBN & criticized Brit papers.

The official fee for Moura will be £32 million the reason the mirror are reporting a £26 million fee has been agreed with Sao Paulo is because Moura receives 20% of the money witch will take it to around £26 million. Sounds like we've got our man.

I really hope this is true and it makes sense

It seems player and club are happy for him to join United. It's down to his agent now. We all know that unless the agent is Mendes, we do not do particularly well with agents. Fingers crossed.

Does anyone else find it a bit strange how the Mirror have two articles with completely contradicting headlines, one that says United to make 32m final bid for Moura and another saying we've signed him for 26m.

Not believing anything from the Mirror just yet.

The reason behind that is Lucas Moura owns 20% of his contract or ahs a stipulation saying he gets 20 percent of what hes sold for therefore Sao Paulo wanted a higher price.

I want Moura just as much as the next guy maybe more than most but im so confused as to how the team will line up. Granted there is squad rotation etc but all of our wingers will want to play the vast majority of games . Moura imo would be wasted on the left which is the only place i see available and that is if Nani is sold.

To be honest I'm very disappointed with what SAF said and find him to be quite arrogant about the situation. I have loved the guy since I was a kid and have defended him countless times in arguments with opposing fans of the usual suspects over the years but I feel he is being ignorant to us fans about the whole issue and also a hypocrite when it comes to transfer fees because if he really felt that the fees are ridiculous then why didn't he let Ronaldo go for £20M to make his point?

Also, he might be a legend to United and its fans but that doesn't mean he has the power to dictate how and who other football clubs do business with, nor is it up to him to decide how much a player deserves to be paid, he is a manager who is paid well to do his job as manager and one of those jobs is to keep the fans happy and so if the fans want to see the worlds best players in the team then he should be prepared to pay what our rivals are paying to get them whether he agrees with the fees or not.

Football is a rapidly changing business and as with any business its the managers job to embrace that change in order to remain successful regardless of his own opinions. It doesn't matter what excuses he makes, if he doesn't sign the players we need and we end up trophy less at the end of the season then he hasn't done his job correctly and he will have nobody to blame but himself for blatantly ignoring the warning signs and remaining stuck in his arrogant ways.

I hope this isn't the case but its wrong of him to expect people to fork out large sums of money to support his team and then turn around and tell the fans we wont be investing that money in the team as the Glazers are a much more worthy cause as thats where the money is going anyway!

Flimbo

Right Flimbo, I get it your a passionate supporter and you don't like the Glazers but Fergie also has to keep in mind that he is on the pay roll of the Glazers and if the Glazers ask him to say he is pro them then THAT is also part of his job. It might not be a part of his job that I agree with or like but it is part of his duties as much as making supporters happy.

In short he has his hands tide, would you prefer him to come out bad mouth his employer anger them and end up with no transfer funds?

And finally have you ever considered that Fergie (who is famous for this btw) is using the media to his advantage? If he came out and said there is value in the market, then surely clubs would up there prices. Saying what he said makes clubs like Sao Paulo think he is close to walking away from the deal and therefore more likely to take the offer on the table.

The mirror is saying that we have had a bid accepted of 26mill, i thought we had a bid dearer than that rejected, although if it had of being 32mill i would of believed..

Believable0 Unbelievable1

If you get 32 million take off the 20% moura will be entitled to him self you get left with just under 26 million, so the club will infact be agreeing to 26 million figuratively speaking!
