Not a good night for our top 4 ambitions, Liverpool, spurs and most likely after last night, arsenal out if Europe.

Are we this desperate? Sad state of affairs.

Anon

If you read some of the stuff posted, we are now okay with such low standards now a days and most things have become acceptable.

Not a good few days for English football in general and makes you wonder if we are over paying for players and that there is a much larger pool of players available out there that are good enough. Even Chelsea looked second best against a PSG team missing a large number of players and City looked way out of its league against a Barcelona team that looked liked they had a few more gears that they could step up to if wanted.

We should win this weekend and then the tough stretch starts. The reality is we could use a favour from Everton, City this weekend.

Anon, for some this was our Plan B, European football would affect Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool allowing us to pull clear. Guess we are on to Plan C, the one I believe in, we end up in the league where our performances put us, it's all down to the team / squad now. Oh I better add for the nit pickers that includes the manager.
I am a strong believer in making your own destiny so from here on we will see how good the manager and players are. Strap yourself in for a bumpy ride, will we make top 4, time will tell, but isn't that what supporting Utd is all about.

in what way GCU? What low standards have some excepted?

Chris

I thnk Shahram is alluding to the posts suggesting that the only way we get into the top 4 is because Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs will be busy in Europe, ie not because we are good enough.

Chris

I am alluding to the fact that we have spent 150 million and hoping other are preoccupied with European football so that we can squeeze in there and finish forth. Everyone seems to be accepting the poor poor football we are witnessing and hanging their hat on a top 4.

My question to those who seem to be accepting of this is a simple one, what are your views let's say in 6 weeks time if we are sitting in 5ht or 6th and 3 or 4 points out?

I say that is dropping your standards mate. Fact is we have the largest wage bill in the league and broke the bank in the summer to land the biggest 2 players in the Transfer market. I expect better football, better results and don't think it is right to want Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool pre-occupied with Europe for us to finish in the top 4. Just my view.

Was there really such a post AJH? If there was then too bad. But realistically speaking, of course the European midweek is a factor, but not the deciding factor!

Just to clarify something, I too want us in the top 4 on merit not because of others failings but the fact is we've been so poor we could use all the help we can get from teams around us dropping points and being distracted but reality is now spurs, Liverpool, prob arsenal and Southampton aswell as ourselves literally have top 4 to play for and the FA cup of course in a few teams cases so it will be who the better teams are getting those spots.

27 Feb 2015 11:03:29
Mbd, there have been a few on those lines. I think people saw what Liverpool did last year and used others being in Europe as the reason for them finishing 2nd.

I've been seeing posts creeping up over the last few weeks in regards to Rooney's high wages which I personally believe is ridiculous. I have no idea why people continually bang on about Wayne's wage because he has shown us loyalty, won us silverware and the lad has been committed to the cause from day one.

Why should he watch foreign players come to the club like Di Maria, Mata, RVP, Falcao etc pick up bigger wages than him when he has proven himself at the theatre year after year? Many players have come and gone since Rooney joined our club and he has had offers to move on yet he is still busting a gut out on the pitch for us eleven years on.

I know there are plenty of 'Rooney haters' out there but for me the lad has proven every bit worth the investment in him and is still performing as one of the best in our team even though he is being constantly played out of position. Why shouldn't he have asked for a pay rise when he did? Hell I would have done the same if I were him. Why should he watch players who don't give half as much as he does for other clubs pick up bigger pay checks than he does?

Regardless if he hits peak form or not again I believe he must be considered a club legend for his service over the years (I'm sure folk will dispute that as well). I for one have enjoyed watching him at Old Trafford.

Rooney isn't as good as he was, he's not a midfielder.

Hes not made of milk that he can't do no wrong, he's questioned the club twice.

Although he is one of our better players at the moment, i just think we missed the trick last year we shouod have sold Rooney when fergie said he wanted to leave.

Rooney should play as a striker or no 10, i don't pay too much attention to how much they get paid but he should still be giving more to the team then just wholehearted performance .

There is no point running around the pitch and working hard if there isn't no end result .

Agree5 Disagree4

26 Feb 2015 14:35:24
rooneys our best payer and has been since ronaldo left, i don't get all the hate on him, he hasn't asked to play in midfield.

but he's better playing in midfield than some of our actual midfielders.

Agree4 Disagree4

26 Feb 2015 14:53:31
I have no problem with somebody trying to earn as much as they can. If somebody is willing to pay it then fair enough.

My only problem with Rooney is that he isn't as great a footballer as the media or some fans would have us believe, if he wasn't English he wouldn't be where he is today. Since 2011 he has not been a great performer.

A good player, but I would pick 20-30 strikers over him, 2000 midfielders.

That's my only gripe. We don't really know what happens behind the scenes and what is down to the agent, the manager and the player. But he isn't worth what he is paid for me and certainly invariably has 5 bad games for every decent one.

26 Feb 2015 14:49:38
Somebody who is on 300'000 grand a week should be putting in far better performances than he does.People saying he's our best player we'll that's not hard with the dross we've been serving up for 4 years. He should of gone the first time he questioned our club to get a massive rise.Hes been decidedly average now for way too long. When was the last time he was truly outstanding. who say he's been loyal, if he hadn't of got his pay rise he would of jumped ship.So many people are now accepting mediocrity

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Is Rooney the only Utd player to ever have asked for a pay rise or used another club's interest to got one?}

26 Feb 2015 15:33:05
At some point people are going to have to accept that football has changed. Club loyalty, playing for the badge etc are relics of a bygone era that clubs and players use only when it's in their benefit. We live in an era when clubs are primarily owned by those interested in profits, and players are primarily concerned with how much money they can make. This is football today and nobody can blame Rooney, or Di Maria, or anyone else for trying to make as much as possible when the club is trying to do the exact same thing.

Ed002 rightly calls players transient employees, they aren't tied to a single club, they can try to leave at any time and they are worth exactly what a club is willing to pay them. Whether or not Rooney does enough to convince the supporters that he is worth his weekly wage is beside the point, he asked for a massive wage and the club gave it to him because they believed that doing so was in the benefit of their interests.

Just a quick question regarding a part of your OP :

"proven himself at the theatre year after year?"

Is young Mr Rooney moonlighting in "Shrek The Musical"?
Surely he doesn't need the cash that bad :)

Pink - I know the Rooney thing is a bone you and I fight over, but to be honest he has only stood out in one game for me this season Newcastle. He did ok against Preston as well, aside from that he has either not played well or been plain average this season.

I admit last season first few months he was superb, however 1 good game in 5 is perhaps being too generous over the past 18 months all in all.

I do like him, just not what he was or indeed as crucial as made out to be by a few.

Agree0 Disagree2

26 Feb 2015 21:15:50
He's our Gerrard. Only two players in world football good enough to have the team revolve around them, Messi and Ronaldo and even then there is trouble. Gerrard was indespensable in ostensibly an upper midtable side. Rooneys role and value to the club though he has been a great servant is almost as obcenely overinflated as his salary. I think our front 3 are on around the same money as Barcas maybe a little more. That represents bad business on every level possible, including ffp.

26 Feb 2015 21:32:12
When did "Rooney" threaten to go to City? Or is it selective bits of tabloid we would like to believe to suit our agenda? The list is endless but we have done it pointless and endless number of times. Rio, Keane, Cristiano, Vidic, Evra and Sir Alex! Or may be Rooney is a scouser?

Deeps.

Rooney's camp had a deal with City the first time he asked to leave. I know of that with a very high degree of certainty and it did not come from the tabloids:) BTW I don't agree with what people are saying but it is frustrating time for us at the moment and i can see why people are looking to vent their anger at various characters.

Mine are solely focused on Mr. LVG as he is the king culprit for this mess :) I hope he proves me very very wrong and gets this team to show its quality in the run it.

27 Feb 2015 10:30:04

{Ed002's Note - I could only speculate.}

26 Feb 2015 07:32:01
If United lose another starlet in perreira and then lose De Gea, the hierarchy will need a massive look at themselves to understand why we fail to keep the best talent at the club?!

If rumours are true about LVG's relationship with De Gea (which i doubt as its a Spanish Paper) then we should seriously review his position in the summer (league placing dependent).

Believable0 Unbelievable2

26 Feb 2015 08:09:32
League placing not dependent. If LvG let's good players go just because he doesn't like them, and keeps under achieving players just because he does like them, he should go. Its not a social club, its a football club and its what the players do on the pitch that is most important. Hopefully the DdG rumours are not true.

Agree2 Disagree0

26 Feb 2015 10:45:06
DDG passes the ball forward too much for LVG's liking!

Agree6 Disagree3

26 Feb 2015 11:29:46
Anybody who doesn't panic on hourly basis from reading the rags should know the DDG rumours are horse sh*t why would LVG play him then?

Most people seem to think they know LVG on a personal level and judging by most of the comments on his personality would this not mean we'll see Valdes starting on Sat, or any other game for that matter?

Secondly, there are more indications DDG will sign a new contract than not by his agent blatantly saying he was happy at the club not more than a month or so ago and can't see him not signing a new deal.

Agree6 Disagree0

26 Feb 2015 12:54:17
Bgolgo - it's all well and good being the eternal optimist but you have to admit it is dragging on a bit now. I personally think the lad will stay should we get top four but if not he will certainly consider his options.

Beast - quality mate.

Agree4 Disagree4

26 Feb 2015 13:07:15
JMB its not optimism. Its a clear indication he wants to sign, outlined from his agent. His agent has done the talking for him. The general consensus with most players is they never discuss contracts during the playing season as they generally want to concentrate on their play.
