For those who didn't watch the game. First half we were decent was never a 3-0 first half anyway. Rooney and mata linked up well cleverly looked poor I hate having a go at players when their clearly giving it their all but the boy just isn't up to it. The second half was not great from utds perspective the amount of changes didn't help Lingaard Nani didn't have the best game Shaw was abit quiet and the strikers didn't really have any chances to speak of. Overall to me atleast it seems after or first11 the squad is not great. Smalling was our best player second half says alot!

Fess,

Don't think cleverley had a bad game to be honest, was steady did his job well. Easy to suggest we don't have a good squad because of the 2nd half but I think some of them players looked good. Michael Keane looks like he is close to being ready. Nani just is not good enough and needs to go and I am starting to feel the same about kagawa as much as I hate to say it.

We have januzaj and rvp to come back in (and Fellaini ) so the squad will be boosted, but everything in both matches points towards us needing a couple of centre halves and a centre midfielder, which by the sound of things is what lvg thinks as well.

Agree0 Disagree0

I just think he gives the ball away too often to be considered a utd player. Also in the middle of the field you have to be able to shine in atleast defending or attacking and he just seems to be average in both regards. He was given the captaincy today may b i'm being harsh but I just expected him to raise his game just a litle.

Agree0 Disagree0

We had no midfielders second half kagawa played cm he was no good at all. the goalie had a nightmare no one should score from there amos should have been sold on ages ago never been upto standard. I'm not sure who was cm with him but first half good second half defence pretty good goalie and midfield poor and will Keane and hernandez were rusty which is understandable

Agree0 Disagree0

It was about 60 mins when I realised Nani & Kagawa even came on for the 2nd half - and that was because they gave the ball away.

Shame for Amos, but he did pull off a great save as well. Both keepers looked very nervous.

Agree0 Disagree0

Roma:
Good for the team to see how tactically how teams may try to push pack the 3-5-2 with wingers pushed up high as Roma did.

A game of individual moments for the goals (Rooney, Pjanic), though Rooney's chip and Mata's touch and chip were nice to see.

None of the young players were that impressive today. Nani looks like he wants to go. And poor Tom Cleverley - first half, he can't tackle, second half he can't pass, same as always. Young and Chicharito with a few shocking decisions as well.

Second half I thought Kagawa and Smalling played well. Kagawa looks like he can run the midfield, and Smalling looked assertive.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with everything aside from last line. Smalling looked ropey to me, couple of last ditch slides to get himself out of trouble (which he created himself). Kagawa was anonymous aside from when he was giving the ball away. I like him but he is too lightweight and we lose presence in midfield when he is on, but again with Nani & Young as outlets it is difficult.

Cleverley had a poor game, but that was on account of our wing backs being very lazy and not switched on to making option. We looked very disjointed.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 23:04:40
The first half was a joy to behold and as normal when there is a lot of substitutes some of the game went with them. Roma did well to get back into it and Pjanic goal was remarkable - feel sorry for Amos as Johnstone had put in a great performance before him. Rooney looks to be shining and Mata has picked up from where he left off. I can't wait to see what happens when RVP is in the mix and we have a new center back and midfielder.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Joy to behold Fresh? The score was but the performance was tepid, looked like the Dutch against Mexico.

26 Jul 2014 22:37:36
Is this the same Roma team that beat the might Liverpool a few days ago?;-) lol.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 23:17:31
Shappy, you sound like a classic liverpool fan there. Looking for one-upmanship via proxy. Snap out of it ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

BornIntoIt, I posted that just before Pjanic scored. I then spent the rest of the game in panic mode thinking what a t*t I may have made myself look. Fortunately the lads held on for the win. lol.

As a complete side note, you have to feel for Southampton. Their squad is being torn apart. Pochettino, Lallana, Shaw, Lovren, Lambert and now Chambers. They aren't just losing their top players, they're losing their up and coming ones too.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 22:04:05
A few real quality players in key positions, with this system and, yip you got it. WERE BACK,! :)

26 Jul 2014 22:01:40
I'm not one for getting excited too early but what a team we are! If we don't have the league wrapped up by Christmas at the latest I will be shocked! LVG is definitely my new man crush!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 22:00:03
Wow that rooney goal was insane, I have a feeling he will have a terrific season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 21:55:01
Oh crap! They have stopped the transmission on the game because the real Wayne Rooney has turned up with a big mac in his mouth and the Rooney on the pitch is a Robot! Haha

Joking aside . Rooneys Goal and assist were both WORLD CLASS! now put the game back on and now it's come back on we have missed the 3rd goal . half time!

Oh Rooney got the 3rd from a Pen . wow .

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Killswitch73 - spit on M8, looking and player with confidence and desire. Early days but impressed with LVG's start :)

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 21:52:26
Wow the players really look like the want to play and Wayne Rooney has scored the first and created the second

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 20:32:14
I think with us needing less wide players in our new system and we need another CB what about letting Young go back to Villa and we take Vlaar off them.
It seems Villa would like him back, perfect solution for us. Vlaar only has 1 yr left so we offer a straight swap.
Thoughts?

Red Daz

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Nope. I'd rather have Young than Vlaar; and I'd give Young away.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 21:06:47
Yep simple as that, that's how deals work. Would you have wanted vlaar before the World Cup?

Agree0 Disagree0

Vlaar is shocking.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd keep Young because he's a good player. I'd sell some fans though if I could

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with Sydney Vlaar is awful .

Agree0 Disagree0

Here here Constantine.

Wow, apparently RM and PSG have agreed a €65m deal for Di Maria, don't get me wrong it's not our money so I couldn't care less about spending it, but damn, PSG only offered €20m for him last summer. Crazy money and no doubt they need to offload one or two stars. Who should we try to buy? Cavani? Moura? Veratti? Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm so glad he's gone to PSG and not OT. It's insane to think that James Rodriguez didn't cost much more.

I expect they'll be selling Cavani and Moura/Lavezzi to balance the books.

Agree0 Disagree0

Would take Verrati and Moura.

Matuidi is a good player imo and could be a good alternative if we can't get Vidal.

Agree0 Disagree0

Crazy money and in the current set up I don't see how he would fit for us. Future years as a 433 maybe.
Personally the more I read about Veratti the more I like.not sure he would be massively cheaper than Vidal but his stats (all be it in a weak league) do look good.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think James cost €90m.

Agree0 Disagree0

Out of all of them I would have Lavezzi as he can play wide or as a forward meaning he would work well in this new system. I wouldn't touch Cavani, I really think he is very very poor and Verratti isn't what we need right now.

Would love to see Lavezzi though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd - I thought he cost €75 million? That equates to a Bebe and a Di Maria!

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 23:36:55
Verratti if Vidal doesn't sign. Verratti to sit back and allow Herrera to go forward more, that'd be a decent pairing.

Agree0 Disagree0

£71m I think R7.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 19:59:22
Cleverley Captain??
Wow don't really know what to say.
Part of me wants him to do well

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He is playing 90 minutes

Agree0 Disagree0

It's a manager trying to get the best out of a player. Faultless thus far olde iron tulip. Not sure Tom will ever make it at MU, but the manager is doing the right thing. I'm impressed so far.

Agree0 Disagree0

He looked a fine young player 3 years or so ago. If he can get his confidence back he'd be a decent squad player.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 21:07:30
It's just because he is playing the full 90.

Agree0 Disagree0

There is a reason he is playing 90 minutes, why he is captain and why he was chosen to speak at the press conference. It's a manager giving a player who has had a massive knock in confidence a trusted role to bring back some confidence. Good management.

Agree0 Disagree0

GDS, and why is he playing the full 90 minutes? The same man who's decided he will play 90 minutes is the same man who made him captain. I think it's a confidence booster, certainly an attempt at boosting his confidence.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 22:26:17
I agree syd, can't do him any harm.

Agree0 Disagree0

He will get the full ninety. Rooney and Mata will probably get 45 or 60.

Agree0 Disagree0

What a performance, can say all we want about beating the galaxy 7-0 and how poor they were but Roma are a solid outfit and I think we are putting on a great show . Rooney looks like a completely different man . So impressed .

We want 8 haha

Agree0 Disagree0

I would say lvg is having a proper look at him while he decides if he should sell him or not, same goes for fletcher.
i can't remember many post saying he was given fletch confidence in the last game
There is a reason why the established players, rooney and co are not playing 90

Agree0 Disagree0

He's had an awful game!

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 19:51:27
Who would have thought that Cleverley would captain the team. LVG is going to keep everybody guessing who the captain is going to be when the season starts.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Think it's purely because he is one of the only players that will play 90 mins tonight, that and LVG is trying to give him some confidence, hope he does well because even if we sign another CM we will still need cover every now and then

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 18:40:30
Who are we going to see take centre stage tonight? I for one will be sat tight watching it. I hope to see a bit of Zaha and Lingard as well as hopefully Powell. I've surprised myself with this one - quite looking forward to see if Young can play as well against better opposition. God what am I saying.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Van Gaal is a man of his word and he really is giving everyone a chance to shine. I also think he is being clever with the arm band, giving it to players who are on the periphery and seeing if the added confidence/pressure makes them shine or shrink.
Would love to see Lingard and Powell in the second half.
Lets hope we play as well in this game and the momentum keeps building.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fresh
Have I missed something, you refer to Powell and looking forward to watching him, I thought he hadn't been picked for the tour.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 20:59:03
Don't think we may see any of Zaha at Manchester United after his antics at regarding training.

Agree0 Disagree0

He has recovered from his injury and has joined up with the squad.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 17:49:11
If we have fixed targets in mind for this summer, I still think we should buy Memphis Depay and loan him back to PSV for a season. I think next season there could be a few clubs financially better off and will snap him up?

A lot of talk of Vidal and Turan etc, but would like some activity on CB

Looking forward to tonight's match more stern a test! :)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 16:18:49
alot of talk regading cavani, overpriced imo, but if rumours are true and we do waste 40 plus million on him where would he play in our team?

he already moans about being played out wide can't see rvp being dropped and don't see rooney being sacrificed.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It will never happen - not needed.

Agree0 Disagree0

Right back

Agree0 Disagree0

I would like to see how Rooney and RvP get on together next season. If anyone can get the best out of them it's this manager. Not even SAF could get the best out of them at the same time.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we are to go for a forward it needs to be someone who is mainly a winger but is comfortable through the middle. Di Maria, Robben or Lavezzi tick those boxes.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ive said from the start rooney and rvp should work but they have never had a run together .
Once we improve the cm I also think rooney will make a few on here eat there words

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 16:33:47
once I've finished working 8am to 8pm in this heat I am going home to shower n chill out with a bear to watch us play roma on mutv.

I hope van gaal philosophy is there to see and we do well against a strong roma side.

Transfer wise I think we may see a signing next week, potentially a player with some experience for defence and if that's vermaelen so be it as I believe under van gaal he will be quality

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 17:12:40
Bloody hell mate, wouldn't be posting that around the internet, you'll have RSPCA on your case if you're lodging a bear!

Ps. Does it bite? ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Up here a 'bear' is a The Rangers supporter, cuddling up to one of them can be very dangerous - I'd rather drink John McCririck's bath water!}

Look out mate, bears can be quite moody.

Agree0 Disagree0

With a BEAR?! Sounds pretty damn dangerous!

Agree0 Disagree0

Careful with the bear. they can be aggressive!

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think you can chill out with a bear or is that what you call the missus? I'm sure she's a lovely woman!

Can't wait for this match more of a test than the last one may even chill out with a liger myself!

Just had a call from Sky MUTV on offer £3 per month for 3 months - and will be on before the Roma game tonight

Not bad & better than watching online

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Cheers for making me aware of the offer mate, got it myself.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 15:02:43
I think we will have to sign 1 player from each category to be challenging for the title

In that order of preference of players
CB : Hummels, De Vrij, Vermaelen
CM : Vidal, Strootman, Khedira(?)
Left sided Squad player : Blind, Vertonghen

It would be ok if we do not sign any attacking player in this window, but I believe we need to sign 1 player for each of the above mentioned positions.

Also just a thought and I know people will murder me for this, but can Cleverley play as a right sided wing back as a backup for Rafael?
He is a decent crosser and is quick, if LvG can work on his defending he can be a good player in that position.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Prepare to be murdered. Cleverley(give me a break) we are meant to be looking towards the future.
I would'nt trust Cleverley to wash my car.

Agree0 Disagree0

Khedira? didn't we have a offer rejected on deadline day last summer?

what about modric surley will struggle to make the madrid team now they have got kroos and james.

Agree0 Disagree0

I believe it will be Modric and Kroos sitting, Alonso has been getting progressively worse for some time now and illaramendi hasn't lived up to the hype

Agree0 Disagree0

Mufc90 absolutely no doubt in my mind. I'd take Modric ahead of Khedira but would he be too similar to Herrera?

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 14:25:53
Does anyone see us persevering with this back 3/5 for years to come? It is pretty clear we have a very unbalanced squad, lots of forwards, very few defenders. Louis seems to be trying to fit in all of our best players.

After a year of so when some 'surplus' players have left and more suitable signings are made do you see us reverting back to a 433 more regularly? I definatley expect us to play that at various points this season.

A back 3 though, playing against a intelligent striker would have me worried. A striker who makes diagonal runs and stretches the back line, making gaps. This could be solved by an out and out defensive midfielder though, who could drop into cb making a back 4. If we were to sign Carvalho instead of Vidal I would not be too disappointed. Along with a tactically astute defender (Hummels in an ideal world) it may work well.

I did enjoy watching the galaxy game though, we kept the ball really well and there were lots of triangles between the likes of mata, Herrera, welbeck etc. It was excellent seeing us press high and winning the ball back quickly too!

Thanks for reading.

Hello everyone

Long time reader, first time poster. Thought i'd introduce myself and say hello!
Im from Manchester and been a fan since the early 90's. Love the site from the ridiculous rumours to the intelligent posts. Think the eds do a belting job an some of the banter is top class! Going to try and get a bit more involved with the discussions, however have absolutely no inside knowledge unfortunately! Quite good friends with John Deehan for those who are old enough to remember him. He got me a top signed by the whole squad from Fergies last year through Eric Steele which was ace!

Enough rambling let's hope for a fruitful season with LvG at the helm!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Welcome dev :)

I know it's not united related but what the hell is going on at Southampton? Are they in debt badly or something? I feel sorry for there fans, after last season I would suspect Southampton fans would of been of the opinion that maybe they could challenge for a Europa league spot, then within a few months they lose their manager, shaw, Lallana, lambert, lovren, chambers, possibly schneiderlain maybe more? I think they could be in a relegation fight next season, I hope there not as I fink many neutrals like Southampton. Has anyone got any info onto why this has all suddenly happened there, I actually thought they had a wealthy owner

Cheers in advance

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Katharina Liebherr the daughter of the guy who brought them to the Premier league along with their Cheif Exec has no desire to continue with Southampton. Nicola Cortese quit last year because he knew Katharina wanted to asset strip and sell the club.
Which is essentially what we are seeing

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - {Ed001's Note - it is neither. They had a sugar daddy who put a chief exec, Cortese, in place with a remit to run the club with the aim of achieving European football. It was almost an open cheque book, with the club spending a lot of money on infrastructure, including an excellent training ground, players' wages and bonuses etc.

Unfortunately Markus Liebherr died, leaving the club to a foundation which is in the hands of his children. They want to run the club as a business, and are not willing to sink their own money into something they have no interest in. Initially they just left it to Cortese to run while they sorted out their dad's affairs. Then they started to look into the club, they found that Cortese was spending far more than the club was making, plus making verbal promises on bonuses that would mean the club's debt would increase etc.

So they removed him from his position and started to cut back on spending, including player bonuses, in an attempt to set the club back on track. The lack of bonuses upset the players, hence senior ones being desperate to leave, the lack of ambition compounded the problem. They have brought in a manager who is happy to run the club on a tight budget and try to utilise the youth academy players as much as possible.

Now they are just selling up those who are unhappy to reduce the debt, provide funds for spending and to put towards future expansion of the ground. I am not sure if their long term plan is to set the club straight and then sell, or if they just want to run it as a long term stable business. Either way, they have decided to take the short term route to financial stability and hope that it doesn't lead to relegation. }

Ah cheers for the reply ed. I bet the fans are gutted

I think if Darren Fletcher is fit, he should be the new Captain, it's a big if but he's the Scotland Captain, and I think when he is fully fit he would be a great Captain.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 12:14:57
He won't play nearly enough to be Vice-captain never mind Captain.

Agree0 Disagree0

Being captain of a pub level team doesn't qualify you to be captain of Manchester United.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 13:45:21
I would be seriously Upset if I saw him playing enough to be considered.

Agree0 Disagree0

He would be captain of a sinking ship if he were to be made captain of us and played regularly. We need better than that, obviously shame about his illness, but football wise he should be at Newcastle/Stoke not Man Utd.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 14:18:14
Calm down on the Fletcher bashing, okay he's not a fantastic midfielder now mainly thanks to his illness and yes we do need better but he's still a great professional with a lot of passion and love for the club which to be honest is everything a captain should be. Maybe try show a little more gratitude.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thankyou Darren Fletcher for your passion(Gratitude).
But you are not good enough for the captaincy or UTD anymore(reality).

Seen your team on line up builder u posted down the page, if that is how we end up I would b extremely happy and I honestly believe that team is more than capable of winning both domesticly and in European competition, I do believe for the price being quoted tho that cuadrado would be a silly buy, he's not done enough for me to warrant that price and I'd rather stick with rafael and Valencia if I'm honest.

Here's something for everyone to discuss, in a squad rotational way could young be used as a wing back on the right? He does kinda work hard tracking back and can sometimes put a good ball in, can anyone see him being used there at all?
And where do people see Januzaj being used this season?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Jul 2014 13:15:31
Regards the right back spot I think rafa and tony have a season to impress. Long term I could see van gaal going for janmaat next summer assuming he doesn't go elsewhere this summer.

Regards young I think his pace and versatility means he will stay for now. His problem is he is a confidence player and his has been eroded.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 13:34:52

Would you all be happy with a fit strootman ,depay and de vrij or will everyone be disappointed unless its vidal,di maria and hummels?

For me I'd be happy with the top list ,all an improvement on what we have and added to this a manager that knows what he's doing ,our player's were never as bad as where moyes dragged them to last year

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Strootman and Depay certainly would be great, but personally I think we need a more experienced centre back than De Vrij. Also with all the rumours about Vidal, hopefully we'll sign him.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 10:12:35
With Carrick out for 10 to 12 weeks it may of been the perfect opportunity to look at Thorpe in the holding roll against LA Galaxy.

The other option could of been to try Petrucci. He played very well a few seasons ago on tour. He's 22 now and deserves at least a chance. He has been playing deeper recently in the reserves. The likes of Anderson, Cleverley, Gibson, Fletcher were all given game time. Petrucci WAS highly valued once in Italy. Who's to know we might regret letting Petrucci go before actually giving him a go.

Plus with his new bum fluff beard he looks like Gundogan if you squint a little. We already have the new Rodriguez James in Reece ;-)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I read that Pearson and Rothwell had very good seasons.

Agree0 Disagree0

Petrucci is one of the most talented players to play for our U21 side. On par with Ravel, and a step above Pogba and Januzaj in terms of pure talent.

He just gets injured too often. His talent and ability are unquestionable, but physically speaking, he is not up to it.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 08:26:17
Looks like Cleverly under the microscope tonight as he's down to play 90 minutes vs Roma (as is Blackett: being considered as LB understudy?)

Does Cleverly have 90 minutes to play for his Utd future? And if he fails, will that signal the signing of a new CM?

Glad that Powell in the states: hope he gets a run out tonight also.

(And what a great way to come back at Mourinho's mind games about signing Shaw: LVG sounds like a strict teacher who wants to "speak" to a naughty pupil after class. )

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think Blackett will play left CB like in the last game. With our complete lack of midfielders I find it hard to believe we would sell Cleverley. Unless we sign a couple more I think it would be madness to sell any of our midfielders.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well I sure hope Cleverly's performance tonight is not the deciding factor in signing a new CM. He doesn't look up to it IMO. And never has. Not good in the tackle, no real eye for goal and so on. Anything but a complete midfield player. Would be great to see him improve under van Gaal but over the course of a season we definitely need better options in the middle.

Agree0 Disagree0

I am expecting an August bid for Strootman. Pardoe called it the other day. I think he may be right.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 10:53:20
Think you're right: he hinted at it in latest pre-match press conference.

Strootman and Herrera in CM would be a great platform for us to build on.

Agree0 Disagree0

Roma have said 2 things today.
1 strootman hasn't started running yet
2 he will not be leaving this season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, I hope we haven't dropped our interest in Vidal for Strootman, but only one of your points are relevant here and it's not point number 2. At Roma every player has their price. Whether we like it or not LvG will be buying Strootman at some stage, I just hope it's not at the expense of Vidal.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't get me wrong I am praying we get Vidal and not Strootman instead, but just because we don't want it to happen, doesn't mean it won't. LvG's press conference today said it all for me. Strootman will also have little issue forcing himself out of Roma. I think our only saving grace is Strootman's fitness, but I think he's more advanced than expected so it's given the manager something to think about. Like I said I am praying we go for Vidal still.

Syd"
Strootman I can judge. He is injured for more than six months. We have to wait and see how he comes back. It is not easy to say how he comes back from injury, but we will wait and see.' Lvg

At the moment he hasn't even started running so I would be amazed if we try to sign him in august but time will tell

Hi was just wondering seeing that Conte left juve, surely vidal was/is close to leaving?

Vidal is a great player don't get me wrong, but I don't get why we are so obsessed with our midfield. Yes it needs improving but for me centre back is top priority.

1. LVG likes to play 3.
2. We only have 3 senior centre backs.
3. None of them are a Rio or Vidic in their prime.
4. It is rare they are all fit at the same time.

Hummels would be great but even if we get him I still think wr need another and may even need to be pragmatic about them perhaps not being what we'd call "United quality".

Who would everyone's unfancied pick be?

Personally I'd like Vertongen, de Vrij or even Shawcross or Vlaar. Each would improve our team imo as all are better than at least one of Evans, Smalling or Jones. Baby steps.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

De Vrij: has the potential to be world class. Strong, commanding leader (F. captain from young age), used to LVG's "philosophy" and is delaying giving Napoli an answer because he wants to come to Utd. Yes, he's young - but I think him and Jones at the back (with Vermaelon also) would give us experience and a platform for years to come.

The 3 we currently have Evans, Smalling and Jones to go with hopefully Hummels and give Michael Keane a chance in the first team squad I think is enough. Also can see Carrick been used in a 3 at the back. Think this is sufficient for this season at least. I am sure there will also be plenty of games this season where we play a traditional back 4 so no need to overload on centre backs imo. Big season for Evans, Smalling and Jones ahead. Can see at least 1 if not 2 of them going in the next 12 months if they don't progress and start staying injury free.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think De Vrij's lack of experience will be an issue for LVG. He's already said he's not so bothered about actual experience as abut a player having the 'right stuff' and being capable of playing in the formations he wants to use. De Vrij has already showed the latter for Holland, and I assume LVG thinks he has the 'right stuff' as he kept selecting him.
