I see there is the usual jibes on here at LvG but actually I am looking forward to tomorrow. I can't wait to take my seat and watch our team.

People seem to forget the ethos of United. Many times I have been to OT or away from home where we were up against it yet the crowd realised that and got behind the team. Tomorrow the usual suspects have their usual injuries so we will have a makeshift defence but in the past that just made us shout louder. In 79 we took on a far superior Liverpool side at Maine Road and our astonishing vocal support gave us an extra 20%, let's do that tomorrow.

One other point is that Uniteds tradition is to give youth a chance, something we have been criticised for not doing after our summer splurge so tomorrow it should be something special if a young lad gets a chance, it is what our club has been famous for. It is what raises the hairs on the back of your neck when a young lad gets that chance. What a fantastic message it would give to every single youth out there. At City Chelsea you have no chance, at United you will get a chance and I bet, if it happened every youth in our club would be buzzing. People take the mickey out of LvG and his philosophy but that is a real United philosophy.

It is also interesting to note the ones who think LvG should pull his socks up were by and large firmly behind giving the previous manager ultimate support this time last season. LvG deserves that support right now and he has mine. Roll on tomorrow

Believable8 Unbelievable0

Lol, 'you have a chance at united', yeah, right then mate, who was the last?

Agree0 Disagree3

Agreed red man. We've played 5 matches and everyone is going ballistic. I've enjoyed us playing this season. Also, lvg is not blessed with having vidic, evra and Rio in there. We have lost a lot of experience in the back, and in time, we will get a couple of players who will strengthen us in that position.
We have a lot of new players who've only had a few matches playing together, so let's not expect miracles just yet.
We gave Moyes and his utterly dull and useless brand of management nearly a full year, and yet people are jumping on lvg's back after five matches. Calm down!!

Agree7 Disagree0

Nice post Red Man, I think all of us are looking forward to it and to be fair it is always great to see youngsters given an opportunity.

The problem is that the only reason youngsters will be picked is because far too many errors have been made. Chelsea won't play youngsters because they have strength in depth and have players who don't get injured getting out of bed in the morning.

Look how Januzaj & Wilson have barely featured because we have plenty of options going forward. When we have options and he still picks youth then I will believe it is the Utd way, at the moment it is just a lack of options driving the decision nothing more.

The manager is not doing his job properly.

Top post Red man. Totally agree.

Whether it Paddy Mcneir or Tom Thorpe tomorrow as long as he shuts down West Ham I don't care

Aron, Blackett?

Agree0 Disagree0

Beast

Wilson is still recovering from an injury and not being pushed yet. He will learn from Falcao, massively.

I don't see all these "errors" but I do see a decisive suitably experienced manager going about the massive job he was given in a structured way. I have taken on difficult managerial roles in the past (not in football) where the direction needed changing and a better structure implementing, it needs a little time to get the ethos changed. Given that time when things are better set it will reap rewards and that is what I expect after time with LvG.

Agree0 Disagree0

Redman

I am not turning on the manager as i supported the previous manager and also this one. The previous manager got slated for everything with a team that was not good enough and some of us saw that.

Or current manager seems to distance himself from our failures so far this season but at the end of the day he is the captain of the ship.

Whilst people say they have enjoyed our play going forward and finally scoring goals, well that is not surprising given where we have spent money.

I think the results are terrible against nothing teams and wonder how many points we would have had if we had last years fixtures.

We can not week in week out come up with an excuse why we dropped points as these are the easy fixtures and god help us as we are test to play our traditional and new rivals.

Team organisation is managerial function and we are all over the place at the moment.

Hopefully today we pickup 3 points playing without the drama. I think they will come at us given our injury issues and general organisation and think it will be a very difficult game.

Good common sense post.
If not sure it will go down well

Agree0 Disagree2

Good common sense jred? Is it common sense to employ someone. Ask him to undertake a total overhaul of staff, change draconian systems that have gone out of the game 5years ago. Then give him 6 weeks and start telling him that whatever he's doing is rubbish!! Is that common sense?
I do have a large number of employees in my company and we do recruit the best people, but all of them take at least a year until they learn and start putting their influence on the company. If I started getting on their back after 6 weeks, then we'll have no one left.
Common sense!!

Agree2 Disagree1

GCU

I think it will be a difficult game today and we will have to watch their pace on the break especially given our defensive issues.

LvG has started to make the changes that should have been identified and acted upon over a year ago. We are already behind on that and have to play catch up. I know from experience when you make changes to direction, implement new ideas it takes time to show major improvement.

LvG is accountable for organisation but I would be interested to know what Giggs is doing? I think our set up is a good one but the defensive side is down to injuries, quality and lack of a settled back four.

I am confident it will come right, regardless of how these initial games go.

Agree1 Disagree1

Is it good common sense to sack him after 10 months .
Its a big job it will take time . Moyes needed time so does lvg, my view on that has never changed and if we ate 7th after xmas i will stick to that.

Agree0 Disagree1

It was common sense to sack him after 10 months because of all the reasons we discussed on here. Thank heaven we did because he never ever had the basis to be employed by us in the first place, starting with a large hole where honours should be showing on his CV
Move on he has thankfully long been sacked and our club saved from mediocrity

Agree0 Disagree0

Red Man - This isn't the post for me to list all the mistakes I feel LVG has made as it will lose traction. But I like you have undertaken difficult roles in business, I have also owned businesses and recruited people specifically to change the direction of those businesses.

The difficult thing to juggle is maintaining profits whilst undertaking that change, LVG is operating like a public servant when he should be operating like it is his own money at stake. One of the first things he did was criticise our commercial focus, the very focus that has enabled him to acquire massively overpriced players (albeit quality players for the most part). He is spending other peoples money, then bitching about how he got that money. He is not only lessening the profits at this stage, he is literally closing down the business for a renovation that will go on and on and on it seems. We have no idea when this revamp will be completed because the goal posts keep moving.

The one tick in his box is that the supporters have been so disappointed over the past 12 months that they will literally accept anything just on a promise (from a manager that has never proven himself long term). But we are a fickle bunch and I notice a bit of traction in the media now as well so that tick will turn to a cross if results don't improve sharpish.

One major point, (and a couple more as I can't resist): he said it will take up to 3 months for our players to adapt to his methods. Yet the first 2 months including pre-season were spent playing a formation we aren't going to play? After assessing the team he said it was good enough to win the league. He then said it was unbalanced, but did very little about it. It will now take 12 months for them to adapt, would you accept this in business?

If I had appointed LVG I would be livid, there are ways to rebuild without destroying the existing business. We have no tangible evidence that his eventual plan will work and the route we travel is always changing which is very disconcerting. Will we go through all of this again when he moves to 4-3-3?

He has lost his job shortly after every restructuring he has done in the past, because it doesn't stand up to the tests. If this is what he said would happen to the board then we can't blame LVG, but there is no way they would have hired him if he had.

You don't always make the right calls in management, but it takes a brave man to stop something once it's started because it doesn't feel right and big money is at stake (Moyes period), it takes a very brave man to do that twice in quick succession. I don't think Woody is that brave and I think he has everything crossed at the minute, hoping he keeps his own job because sacking off the LVG master plan would mean he would get removed, so we are basically pandering to weak management at the very top in my eyes.

Whatever people try to convince themselves about the state of our club, there is no question in my eyes that this is not what we signed up for. There has been zero progress aside from some big signings. Everything else is just talk, we see the results of his management on the pitch, that is all that matters.

Moyes would not have been allowed to do this to a title winning team. So people can't compare Moyes negatively to this mess. LVG has much more support from above due to the brave man thing I referred to above he is abusing it and failing in his job so far.

"The amount of injuries is worrying me and they are not coming back.

"Smalling is already, for the third time, injured. Evans also. Jones had one injury in the national team, which was unfortunate."

The Dutchman also ruled out the possibility of the versatile Daley Blind dropping into defence against Sam Allardyce's side.

"I don't like having too many left-sided defenders or left-footed players in defence, " he remarked.

"I think always of balance so [instead] I have to pick up a right-sided central defender from the youth education.

"Normally, I am always doing things like that. I have already said that we have a lot of vacancies when you buy only six players and let 14 players go."lvg

So smalling is on his 3rd injury and its only september
We only bought 6 players
And blind won't play cb due to use having to many left sided defenders, after buying 3 left sided defenders.

we started with 3-5-2 even the youth teams which lasted 3 games.
we have a worldclass strike force and a u21 defence.

are we missing a bit of direction ?
Some great signings but when you look at 5 points from the teams we have played and some of our issues i think its been a bit of shambles.

Believable4 Unbelievable6

I agree.

LvG has been going on and on about "philospohy" and started playing 3-5-2 and abandoned it after few games?

He initially said 3-5-2 is the best formation for the players we have but I don't understand how we can play 3 at the back with only 5 CBs in the squad 3 of whom are injury prone 1 is a 20 yr old youngster and the last one is a new signing who mainly plays as an LB.

To add to that we don't have a good RWB and the LWB he signed is apparently not fit enough to play that role.

Not saying that LvG should be sacked and I'm sure he'll get it right but he has made a few mistakes so far.

Agree3 Disagree5

We have Injury problems every season as does every team. Rojo is naturally a LCB not a LB. Yes he can play there but it is not his main position. Against west ham we will see Rojo at CB along with one of McNair or Thorpe at CB. Shaw will play LB and Rafa will play RB. I wouldn't be surprised to see Herrera stay deeper alongside Blind in the centre to provide more cover for the defense leaving the attacking responsibility to the attacks to the front 3, most advanced Midfielder and in certain cases the lb and rb.

Yes it not an ideal situation but we will make due and fight on. Atleast we get to see a youth player coming through. LVG has always said it will take time for the team to gel and develop and get used to the formation. Obviously with our injuries we have been unable to play this formation. but I wouldn't be surprised to see it again once we get our CBs back to fitness, Especially Smalling and Jones as I feel they would be the best when playing 3 at the back with Smalling in the centre of the other two CBs with Rojo on the left and Jones on the Right.

I am excited about the game and looking forward to seeing how Lvg has the team line-up especially the attack.

Agree3 Disagree2

I do find him a little disconcerting as if he is in a slightly detached alternate reality. His utterings seem not to reflect what we can all see.

Agree1 Disagree3

I bet LVG drives a Delorean

Agree0 Disagree0

Are u guys for real? What has lvg said to upset you? He spoke the truth, he's saying what every one of us thinks, smalling Evans are always injured. As is Jones. He's frustrated and he is actually starting to doubt they will ever be fit. We all think the same, and we all know that we can't depend on them any more.
So what did you want lvg to say? It is OK that these guys are injured all the time?
Were you guys not harping on about giving Moyes a chance last year, when our play was clueless and dull. We now have a fantastic team going forward, but a shambles at the back as all the supposed good defenders are not up to it. He said the team is unbalanced. He also said some of the players are not up to it. He will get it right. I have a lot more faith in him than Moyes. So please, let's give the guy a chance and not write him off after 5 matches.

Agree5 Disagree0

Hope Paddy McNair or Tom Thorpe really make a statement tomorrow whichever one it is they could really bypass our other defenders it in there hands now

Agree1 Disagree0

The fact is he has probably never had to suffer the situation of our brittle boned bunch of ne'r do wells, he has no doubt realised Evans is a waste of space 6 games in a row in 2-3 years Smalling 11 and Jones 12 fact is it isn't good enough 1 or 2 of those three will leave in the next year I think

Agree0 Disagree0

No mid
Moyes had said he wanted ronaldo / bale herrera fabergas and baines . He got fellaini.
Imagine if he had got the kind of spend lvg has.
Imagine if lvg never got di maria, herrera, blind and falcao.
Where would we be now ?
What is our direction ? The whole club from first team to youth was set up 3-5-2, it lasted 3 games.
Lvg is good manger but he lasted 2 seasons at munich before getting the sack,
In 3 and a half years at barcelona he got sacked twice . Twice.
Moyes imo wasnt the right man for the job but should of been given time .
Lvg should also be given time .
How some can slate moyes and not blame lvg for anything is beyond me

Agree2 Disagree3

It's going to take a few windows, we all know that and should have seen comments from Eds in the know that the plan is such.

SAF took his foot of the gas with the future planning in his last few years imo. Moyes inherited a squad that needed a rebuild and either didn't have it in him to tell the Glazers or wasn't taken seriously enough when he did. Either way his reign proved it was necessary and wouldn't be a quick fix.

I for one am happy that our squad is taking shape. Yes the next moves needed are pretty obvious. No we won't challenge for the title this season. Yes we'll ship more goals than we should but we'll also outscore the opposition on plenty of occasions too.

Our top 4 rivals will drop plenty of points and it's a long season. I think the Top 2 will be obvious and then 3rd and 4th are up for grabs with external factors like injuries and European runs having an impact on thr final outcome.

Depends mate if u want a home game sign u and ure son up to be a United memeber and u should have no problem getting tickets if it's at old Trafford, if it's away and u want away section good luck lol.

Check availibilty before you spend on memerships, this season unlike previous they released the full seasons games in august instead of game by game.most games even into next year have very limited availibilty left.

I'm looking forwards to tomorrow maybe another new face to add to our new squad in either Thorpe or McNair, just a thought but what would people rather see a young lad come in and prove himself (given time) or go and sign a proven international player? LVG Has said we are team in transition so the addition of youth players stepping up gives him a good problem in my opinion as competition for places can only be a good thing, although with injuries we have at the minute he is being forced to play youngsters. Isn't this the way we want our club to progress? We have the talent and "world class players" going forwards, why not build the foundations of our next team on our academy with a stream of talented young players making the grade. I think this would be wonderful and follow the "philosophy" of Manchester United. It would be amazing to think we could provide a team where the backbone was United to the core, with a few Stella signings to give us the sprinkle of stardust we desire. If the injuries we have force our hand in this way it could be a blessing in disguise!!

Believable2 Unbelievable3

Some good points. I don't think we have any youth players ready for first team football in the positions we need though. But given the plan has to be to secure a swift return to the CL and we've trimmed our squad somewhat (and may not have finished in that department), then there should be plenty of squad player slots up for grabs next season if all goes to plan.

A question for you guys, is Mata too good to be used in a swap deal for say, Strootman? Would you be happy to see him leave? I think he is a brilliant player, but does he go enough? Possibly not. It would also mean that there is one less player ahead of Januzaj for the number 10 spot.

Believable3 Unbelievable5

26 Sep 2014 12:09:40
In the short term it could work well for us, but long term Mata would need to be replaced. You can't lose a player of Mata's quality going forward and not replace him. In the short term the team would have better balance between attack and defence but it will lose depth going forward.

It just depends on where LvG wants to go with this team.

Agree5 Disagree0

At the moment we are so top heavy I could see Januzaj leaving so it depends how bad everyone wants him to stay, someone will have to be culled from our "forwards"

Agree1 Disagree0

26 Sep 2014 11:49:29
If you want a player out of the way to let Januzaj get a chance, Rooney should be that player for me, as he seems a square peg more and more. Mata and Januzaj could then compete for a number 10 type roll.

Agree6 Disagree3

He would be too good if we played a formation that got the best out of him, but we don't so best to move him on.

Rooney is preferred in any case. So wasted just like Kagawa. If we can get a player we actually need in a 4-3-3 as part of that then perfect.

Agree1 Disagree0

26 Sep 2014 12:53:12
Mata fits in to the 3412 but no one else looked comfortable. He also fits into the diamond we've played the last two games, and with Herrera and di Maria around him he looks more involved.

I would be disappointed if he left, especially if it was for someone like Miranda.

However someone is going to have to go. I know my preference though and it isn't Mata.

Agree4 Disagree0

I really am undecided.

On the one handed, he is scoring a lot and will get more and more assists as the team gels. He will also be really well suited to being the top of the diamond. However, it could well be the case that LVG wants to play Falcao and RVP up top which for me doesn't work as well. I think if anyone goes it should probably be RVP out of the lot. But we need some more pace as which ever three of Rooney, Van Persie, Falcao, Mata or Januzaj are picked, none are quick enough and Di Maria is playing deeper. This is why I maintain we need someone like Reus as a second number 9 or as the number 10.

Agree0 Disagree2

Going by our recent sales, we'll probably end up selling mata for 10m and pretend to be happy.
Seriously we're like the graveyard of central attacking midfielders. Anderson, kagawa amd now mata. Perreira is next. Anf if januzaj doesn't turn into a winger then so is he.
I could argue that if we are going towards a 4-3-3, then we only need 2 strikers.

Agree0 Disagree0

For a 4-3-3 we would be absolutely fine with just Rooney, Falcao and Wilson. I don't think there is room for RVP as well (I don't really want to see him go though).

Agree0 Disagree1

Jose decided to get rid of mata and lvg might do the same .
As i have said before i can understand why jose did and i wouldn't be surprised if lvg did

Agree1 Disagree2

In 99 we had 4 top quality forwards competing for 2 places. Now we have Rooney, RVP, Falcao, ADM, Mata and Januzaj for 4 places. If anything there is less competition for places going forward than in 99.
An injury to one or more of the other 5 and we'd miss Mata big time.
Good post but I wouldn't want to swap a Mata for a Strootman, but still think we need a centre back as priority 1 and then either another centre back or a centre midfielder as priority 2. Right back can wait until after then imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

Teddy and ole where happy to sit on the bench

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Sep 2014 18:21:18
Teddy and Ole were unselfish characters, Teddy was glad to be at a big club with a chance of trophies at that stage of his career and Ole had chances to move elsewhere and realised it was a step down. Our current bunch strike me as more self centred. Now brand image means more and sat on the bench doesn't help the brand. Years ago someone like welbeck would have been content with his role at a club this size. Now he's had to move for regular game time for the brand.

Agree1 Disagree0

No player should ever be happy to sit on the bench. Allowing for injuries and Adnan probably playing less than the other 5, they should all be able to play most of the games they're fit for.

MrE you make a good point but by all accounts Danny was told by LVG that he didn't fancy him and Arsenal was a good move for him. An (almost) equally big a club off the pitch that aren't in transition on it, strong in other areas of the pitch and weak in his position.

I do think we need another couple of defenders and a strong centre midfielder but would hate to lose Mata. Whatever the lineup when everyone is fit, it's always nice to have a couple of potential match winners on the bench which is why I think we need all 6 of the players I listed.

All of our good sides have had game changers on the bench and we've won titles off the back of late wins as a result. Teddy, Ole, Berbatov, Tevez, Giggs and Scholes in their twilight years, etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Sep 2014 11:17:13
So its very much confirmed that Paddy McNair will pe playing in defence along side Rojo.
Anyone can tell us that how good is McNair at the defence because all i know is he started
as a striker in his early days. Will he be able to cope with the physical westham side?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Yet another straw on that camels back for me, how has it come to this? No disrespect to McNair.

Agree2 Disagree3

He's an former midfielder who got turned into a defender 2-3 years ago, good with the ball in his feet, not scared of going forward with the ball. Quite quick to be an central defender, but still young, and it's his second season now with the under 21's. But showed great potential the entire year last season, and would probably grasp the opportunity if given. Maybe not as calm as Thorpe at times if i should compare them, but doesn't make mistakes that Thorpe does. A cynical defender.

Agree3 Disagree0

Brilliant technique, former midfielder, grew astonishingly fast after 16. Has done well so far. I know it isen't ideal, but the joy of seeing our young guns getting a chance, nothing trumps it. I am personally happy how folks like Perreira, Blackett and now Mcnair are getting a shot.

Deeps.

Agree2 Disagree0

Why have we loaned keane out ?

Agree4 Disagree0

26 Sep 2014 16:52:18
I think Keane was loaned out because he was unlikely to get much game time, as a result he would progress more playing first team football somewhere else rather than reserve team football with us. Even if we make it to the FA cup final we only have about 42 games left but we could have as few as 34.

So with several players infront of him he'd have been lucky to get a couple of games all season.

LvG likes to have defined roles for players and he very much splits central defence in to left side central and right side central. Evans, Smalling and Jones make up the choices for RCB, with Blackett, Rojo and Blind able to cover the LCB. So we have three players for each side, the fact that we have three injuries in one of those roles is just very unfortunate.

Its like having all three of your Goalkeepers out injured at the same time, you can't not loan out your 4/5 choice youngsters incase of injuries.

Agree0 Disagree0

All i know is that we are at home giants a sos so team with a150 million of investment. No excuses and don't want to hear blah blah blah about system or philosophy. Time for the manager to got off his ass and show how he can tactically deal with injuries with the wealth of talent at his disposal. If we are short of defenders, he had money to deal with it in the summer window, so no excuses and the china brigade being all out even a smart joe like me knew that they are unreliable so for someone who says he is big into analysis and stats it should not be a surprise.

Lots of manager out there with 250 million of money who will win you trophies.

Agree2 Disagree2

Shappy
add shaw and we have 4 to cover lb.
i think kean was ready for a some first team action unlike tyler, who has played every game.

Also its not surprising at all that them 3 are injured

Agree0 Disagree4

At least the young lad won't have a central defensive partner who has played more football at left back than centre back recently and also doesn't have English as his first language, plus a right back next to him that although now classed as experienced is still always a moment of rashness away from getting sent off, throw in a teenage left back also making his first competitive home start, a young (although good) keeper who has not yet developed the leadership qualities of our past keepers and a player making only his third start for the club in front of them all. easy debut really.

On a serious note, hope the lad does well with his unexpected chance. It's not his fault he's in the position he's in and he'll be wearing the shirt.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fletcher doesn't start ahead of Herrara, RVP or Falcao in order to provide a bit more protection in numbers to an inexperienced back 4.
