Sly sports reporting that Marcelo may be available, what's people's thoughts on him personally I feel could be a good buy at a reasonable price to compete with Shaw for LB position.

Personally don’t think the way to solve our defensive issues is to sign a player who has marginal interest in defending.

If he’s available it’s a no brainer. Shaw has done well to get back in contention but he lacks that bit of quality in the final third for me. His crossing isn’t great and I can’t remember if he’s got an assist. I think he needs to be challenged. Marcelo is up there with the best especially attack wise. Would flourish in this side.

He will go to Juventus. Makes no sense coming to us unless we require someone who will want a warm climate, dive around a bit and do a few fancy flicks. I will do it for a smidgen of the cost.

No way jose in my opinion for many reasons:

1.) real madrid will ask for an outrageous fee when they find out we are interested.

2.) marcelo will want ridiculous wages that could be used better elsewhere.

3.) Schweinsteiger, di maria, sanchez and falcao are reasons plenty enough to not go for a player that has been discarded by a top tier club. The motivation wouod not be there.

Top player on the decline, smacks of a Woodward signing.

Shaw will keep improving.
He is getting continuous game time after few years.
Moreover, a settled team will help him to get a better understanding with the rest of the team.

This is true, don't get me wrong I like the fact Shaw is proving a lot of people wrong, but at the same time he needs someone to rotate/ compete with him so he does not get complacent again so I think Marcelo would be a good buy at a decent price for a few years anyway and allows us to concentrate on other areas that need addressing.

Declining ageing player. Italy is perfect for him. Premier League really not let alone our club. Please no.

He should be left back. in the changing rooms.

Not good enough for Real Madrid anymore apparently, so if we are aiming at that level then he isn't the kind of player we should be looking at.

Di Maria, Falcao, Schweinsteiger, Sanchez even Zlatan are players we shouldn't have gone after and players we wasted huge amounts of money on in terms of fees and wages, players who have destabilised our wage structure and are causing us problems even now with renewing contracts.

And for what? What vital input did they give our side that couldn't have been done just as well or better by someone younger, hungrier and on lower wages.

Are club has historically always done best with transfers when we sign the young up and coming players, give them the platform and confidence to take their game to the next level. These are the sort of players we should be going for in the future, not 30+ players looking for one final big money pay day.

Reports that callum hudson odoi has handed a transfer request in because of a lack of oppurtunity at chelsea.

Weve experience a similar issue with paul pogba going to juventus in 2012.

Now the general consensus in the footballing world is that we have a extremely talented young player on our books in mason greenwood.

Should he be promoted into the first team next season? How do we make space for him in a squad loaded with attacking talent, maybe juan mata potentially not getting a new contract could open up a space for him in the squad.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

27 Jan 2019 17:51:13
I think he needs a loan next season, he needs football week in week out at a much higher level than he is available at youth level.

I don't think the Championship is a good league to loan him out to, it leans more to physicality over skill.

I think a loan to one of Eredivise, Prineira Liga or the Jupiler Pro league would be most beneficial, he would hopefully play every week at a top level league and hopefully be ready to come back and challenge for a first team spot 20/ 21 season.

Agree4 Disagree0

27 Jan 2019 18:08:46
A loan sounds ideal in theory but they never really work out for the player, its hard to find the right club to develop the player.

If the space in the squad is avaliable would prefer to see him training with the first team squad and getting game time next season. He turns 18 soon and physically i don't think the premier league will be too overwhelming for him as it would be for angel gomes as an example.

27 Jan 2019 18:32:01
Greenwood should 100% be in the first team picture next season. He stands out a mile in the youth set up.

In an ideal world, in 2 or 3 years time we will have seen Gomes, Chong and Greenwood break through and we will still have Rashford, Martial and Lingard. That would give us 5 out of the 6 forward players having come through at United and the other having been bought at 18. Imagine Gomes as the Sanchez replacent, Chong as the Mata replacement and Greenwood as a Lukaku replacement.

That's the perfect scenario for me, as unlikely as it is, as undoubtedly we will buy players, others will go and the youngsters may not fulfil their potential despite looking as good as they do at the moment. Players like Januzaj and Wilson have shown in recent years that promise doesn't mean they will become great players but Greenwood, Gomes and Chong look like they could be very good. Add Tuanzebe as a very good CB prospect and Henderson or Pereira as GK prospects to that and we have a lot to look forward too.

27 Jan 2019 18:44:52
I think with a first team of Rashford, Lukaku, Sanchez, Mata, Martial and Lingard the chances of Greenwood making more than a handful of appearances is minimal at best. And that's if we don't sign any other forwards.

The step up from youth football to the EPL is massive. I think the right loan would be the making of Greenwood.

Agree3 Disagree0

27 Jan 2019 19:40:53
Hmm, I don’t remember Rashford struggling with the step up' sometimes you just have to take a chance.

27 Jan 2019 20:38:02
Could do worse than putting in a cheeky bid for Hudson-Odoi!

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Jan 2019 20:40:48
Your right Tony, some take the Stephen their stride. But for every Giggs or Rashford there is a Beckham or Lingard.

I think a loan would be best for Greenwood as he needs to play every week, and looking at our squad he would have to really hit the ground running to do that.

Hell if he gets some game time this season he might do that. But if he doesn't then keeping him and playing him in youth football mostly for another year is more likely to stall his development. He needs to regularly test himself against better players.

Training with better players only makes a marginal difference, and is only really good for showing you how to behave and act in the first team.

Nothing beats playing games, and Greenwood needs to do that at a higher level than youth team can offer.

28 Jan 2019 10:23:59
I love Rash, but let's face it, even those of us who've watched the youth teams over the years didn't think he would make such an impact. His name wasn't overly mentioned as being the next big break-out academy player (hard to believe now! ) I think Greenwood is ahead of him at the same stage, both technically and physically. Give him a chance, I say, and maybe see about a loan next January should he not be getting the game time.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jan 2019 11:57:08
Stevie, I would give him a game or two this season to see where he is at and whether he is ready for the first team. That way we know before the start of next season and we can decide whether its a loan to play every week or stay and fight for a first team place.

27 Jan 2019 11:41:13
What a difference a few weeks and a change of attitude makes, we have went from a drab team to watch with many unhappy players scratching around with Watford and Bournemouth in the league to a good watch with a fast exciting forward line and a excellent winning streak .
We also have a big scope for improvement as 3 or 4 positions look like they could be sizeably upgraded, easier than say city or to an extent Liverpool who can also upgrade but may have to take a decent player out now in order to get another in.
On the pitch is much improved and dressing room seems happier, now to get incomings and outgoings rite and we could be on the road back.

Hi Ed001,
Is there already a player profile on Nemanja Matic?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - not yet, so I have added his name to the to do list for you mate.}

27 Jan 2019 12:36:51
Thank you Ed :)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - very welcome mate, I had got it down below a 100 anyway so needed a few new ones to do!}

27 Jan 2019 18:49:40
Ed what’s your view of matic? I think he lacks in mobility but he makes it up in his reading of the game and passing ability. He was shocking under Jose but a change of tactics and more movement in front of him has really brought out the matic of old. Having herrera’s legs next to him has also made a big difference. Next season we need to rotate him as I don’t think he can play as much as he has done. But brilliant player in my eyes and pleased to see him step up in recent weeks.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - used correctly and he is an excellent player, but he can struggle to cope if he does not have legs beside him like you said. He does have a lovely left foot on him and is strong in the air too.}

27 Jan 2019 20:44:46
Matic has been excellent these last few weeks. His reading of the game is good, but Herrera has massively reduced his work load.

I don't think he is mobile enough to play in a double pivot. He needs two midfielders along side him to cover for midfield runners.

I think we need to find someone to come in and rotate with him. Give him a rest and limit fatigue.

Reben Neves would be my pick.

28 Jan 2019 07:03:38
Yes Matic has a good presence in the team.
The team doesn't look the same when he is out.

Who would take Liverpool winning the league if it stopped City winning the treble?

Believable0 Unbelievable2

{Ed025's Note - not me CSF, you are talking about the end of the world there mate..

27 Jan 2019 08:23:08
Never. Simple solution to that is we win the cup or the CL.

27 Jan 2019 08:33:16
Ed, not saying i would, but would also hate City winning the Treble.

Liverpool winning the league is one of the harbingers of the apocalypse.

I'm scared tbh they are so lucky that when thanos clicked his fingers only lovren and Moreno turned to dust.

No, no, no never ever, ever.

Life would be unbearable for me, as I live there.

All the " this is our year" is driving me mad. It would be 100 times worse if the Scousers win it.

Mighty reds would be here all day, every day for 25 years.

This is just an observation but remember a few weeks ago how it appeared that Unai Emery was being lauded for creating the new Arsenal? What on earth happened? It's a cautionary tale. It will be interesting to see how things go after we lose our first game under OGS. Will the bubble burst or will it just be a blip in an upward trend?
