With signings i'd like to see either january or in the summer are a left back and two midfielders, one to be expansive and create and one to be more soild and protect the back four. My peronal picks for each position would be

Jordi Alba as first choice, Izaguirre as second and Alvaro Pereira as third choice.

As for midfielders
Marko Marin 1st, Marvin Martin 2nd, Barry Bannan 3rd

Javi Martinez 1st, Sami Khedira 2nd, Jack Rodwell 3rd

who does everyone else want signed?

Ed, do you think United may go for a right back at some point in the near future? I know the twins/Smalling/Jones have showed promise there, but the latter 2 are traditionally CB's.

I recently placed a £30 bet with a fellow united supporter because I didnt think an out and out right back would be signed this season or next summer. Do you expect the current clan to cover that position for the foreseeable future, or am I likely to find myself out of pocket?

Taff {Ed001's Note - I would expect full backs to be the next priority after central midfield. Once the part sell-off is done, there should be a bit more cash to spend, you should have a good chance of winning your bet.}

For information and reflection guys. I posted the following on this site on 19 October and got absolutely slated by the united supporters, it now looks like I was right ( do a search if you dont believe me ):

Im an LFC fan but would just like to offer my opinions on staurdays game and the euro game last night. I have never seen Fergie play 4 6 0 before which was both a surprise and a major compliment to Liverpool. Clearly he knows the current midielders at United are not good enough with top teams, expect to see a lot more of this as the season progresses. Losing Scholes has been a big blow for SAF, and he has clearly not been replaced. Be honest hes still playing Giggs cos he got no other options in midfield, the mans nearly 40 years old !

Against Basle, united were worse than average, there was no creativity whatsoever, especially in midfield.

If this continues, I fully expect to see a slow decline in uniteds performances, lack of confidence with the players, heads will go down and the supporters will turn against both the team and SAF. There are no more vociferous supporters in the land when united lose, you have had good success and will demand instant results, but being a good supporter is also about getting behind the team in the dark days. The dark clouds are gathering and if SAF doesnt do something about it very quickly, there are going to be a lot of very angry supporters about.

You have not really had a bad period in the last few years and lets be honest you have been very lucky to have won the league on a number of occasions in recent years. This last statement is not meant to be a wind up, and if your really honest with yourselves, I think a lot of you decent supporters would agree. How many times in recent years have you thought phew, that was a lucky win?

City are now looking a real possibility to win the title and go on a run. If united lose against City, everything Ive said above will happen, its happened to all the great teams in the past.

ps to Ferdinand saying how surprised he was that Charlie Adams, an 11 stone man running at 10 mph could fall over if touched on his foot...look back at last seasons FA cup match in the first minute..Berbatov falling over at 0 mph when his shirt was touched, Nani, Ronaldo, the list is endless ? United are famous for it and he knows it.

Liverpool fan here, as demoralising as the loss to Man City was you shouldnt really dwell on it too much, consign it to history, we beat you 4 1 on your own pad but it didnt change the complexity, but there is one thing City cant buy, and thats a working team ethic, and a never say die attitude. I hate this 'new money' concept, teams like yours and ours have built up revenue and support through performances on the pitch, not thorugh dirty money. Yes our teams have spent in the past but all of it was self obtained. I look forward to my team regaining its position at the top fighting for titles with Man utd, just how it used to be. arguably both of our teams have the finest crop of youngsters coming through at the moment, i look forward to morrison and pogba doing battle with sterling and suso. A premiership just isnt a premiership without liverpool and Manchester United doing battle at the top end of the table, were coming boys, watch your back !

People go on about City being a bigger club because they gave us a good hiding. WE needed it really as a reality check TBH.

Remember this City have to win the league consistently to be a bigger club.

Also they will have a few problems keeping players happy. Look at City in europe, they re struggling. They aren't used to playing so many games like Utd are.

Granted they have a better squad than us.

Also when fair play rules come into affect City will have to break even. So they can't continue to spend big unless they offload a few players.

I'm waiting for Balotelli to throw a wobbler again. It will happen.

Now... glad Cleverly is back his touch is very good along with his vision and ability to be able to create space for himself.

Pogba and Morrison impressed on Tues. Both show excellent touch and spacial awareness. They looked far more effective that Carrick, FLetcher Anderson and Giggs in midfield.

I think they need to be given more first tem oppurtunities especially coming off the bench.

Someone in here mentioned how Moyes gives his younger players a chance etc but i think thats more to do with that they have a small squad no money and alot of players injured which is why Barkley has been given his chance along with a few others.

I am dissapointed with Evra his heart isn't in it. I think Fabio should play there and Evra dropped.
Jones RB Smalling and Vidic as CB

Fryers is too young and inexperienced to play Lb just yet.

We seem to have a great set of young and upcoming players but the older ones are letting us down.

After the City game i went on a bit of a rampage when talking about the current state of the club, and although I stand by what i said in terms of City and Chelsea looking likely to finish Above of us, and our midfield being the poorest it's been in years regardless of Cleverley.

I'm going to take back some of the things about us sinking into our transitional period, I mean, we're having it don't be get wrong but it we've had worse transitional periods. I've had time to reflect on what I said and I even took time out to look at some old games where we've been thrashed, not to old mind you though.

For example in October 2005 we got beat 4-1 my Middlesbrough with a very poor side compared to what we've got now and we still came back:

_________________Van der Sar
__Bardsley__ Ferdinand___ O'Shea ___Silvestre, __Fletcher__Smith_______Scholes______Park
__________Rooney_____van Nistelrooy.

I also watched the 5-0 thrashing at Stamford Bridge in 1999, where they ended our near year long unbeaten run (funnily enough the last side to beat us was Middlesbrough).

The side we put out in that game was fairly strong going forward but reasonably poor when coming backwards. Names such as Stam and Irwin were coming to the end of their careers and weren't as effective as they were 4 years previously.

_____________Taibi
Irwin_____Berg____Stam____Silvestre
Beckham____Butt__Scholes____Neville,
____________Yorke____Cole

And of course we've been thrashed with even stronger sides out (E.G the 4-1 thrashing to Liverpool).

So I guess what I'm saying is we've gone out with Worse sides, Slightly better sides, Much better sides, etc. and we've been taken a part on some occasions, it happens, not often but it happens.

So I think we've all got to remember that we've been beaten plenty of times, we've been destroyed multiple times but every single time we've come back. we've shown sides that they can win the battles but we'll win the wars.

I think we'll improve massively, and I think we'll go onto bigger and better things over the next few years, we may not walk away with the league title this year, but next year it'll be back at Old Trafford.

The Moon.

"Joe

There has been a systemic failure by SAF to buy the midfield player we need over the last three summers.

It is not an acceptable situation. We should have dealt with it as other so called big clubs do, identify and buy but we didnt. Either SAF is stubborn, didnt see the problem or the Glazers restrict him.

It is not about January because it is difficult to buy then but if by 1st September a world class midfield player is not in situ then we should be very aware there is a major major issue at Old Trafford.

Red Man"

__________________________________

I'm getting kind of fed up of people saying we need a world class player. This sudden questioning of SAF is really stupid.

For example Cleverly; this is a player (with huge potential) who was plying half the games a Wigan last year. By no means is he currently a world class player, however look at the difference he has made to the team.

It is not always about spending £35 million and plonking a fancy Dutch bloke in the middle of the park. It's about finding a team that work well together, and form a "world class team". 11 players playing well together can beat 11 world class players who don't fit.

So if Fergie goes and buys for example (and this is only to keep bond happy) James MaCarthy and he slots in the middle creating the perfect team with what some of you would otherwise call "average" players then I want everybody to remember who on here has slated him for not spending all this money. Come next year if this is the case, I will remember your names and wait for you all to say that "this is what i've been saying the whole time!" or "in saf we trust".

how good is this morrison kid I have heard a lot about him but never seen him also what position does he play, surely if he was potentially world class he would already be in the team and doing it by now.

i see lots of posts by utd fans saying coates and suarez etc are not in the same class as jones/ vidic , rooney and co , now i have always said rooney is a class footballer and jones looks like a really good player , just because its liverpool players , you are putting them down , at least if you dont think they are as good as your players theres no need to say they are bad players , bit of a rant over.............lfc

Watching Premier League Years 07/08 and wondering what could of been. We're clearly not as good now as we were then. We are missing that Ronaldo player, we still have Rooney thank god and Hernandez is as good as Tevez is for me. The central midfield hasnt changed much, we played Carrick and Anderson - something that we can still do now. If anything it has improved since then, its other areas that haven't. The LB spot should now be up for grabs for someone to claim it as there own, so should the spot alongside Vidic. Carrick should be played more - he holds the ball well for us. Play him alongside Cleverly for now, i'd be happy with that.

Rodwell I think will be the one for January, no one else will be signed -ts not our style. I'd be reasonably happy with that. Sticking with 4-4-2 then Rodwell alongside one of Anderson and Cleverly would be a fine. Now - an exciting winger is necessary, Nani isn't Ronaldo and we want someone who is. Vadillo could well be that player - i wouldnt bet against it and i think he is one of the 'gems' that we will go for. Also Kovacec will probably end up here - although Spur's interest in him is interesting. Are they expecting us to come in for Modric as Harry's leaving and he won't be happy with that. If they sign a replacement then Modric could well come here.

Wish Ronaldo was here thought lol, never mind!

Well, looks as though Javi Martinez is the new Wesley Sneijder. In other words, a brilliant player we'll be linked with for the next 6-12 months, only to miss out and be told our CM is good enough as it stands.

It's simply not going to happen. The guy is worth around £25m at the moment IMO, by the time the window rolls around we're looking more at £30m+ - Bilbao aren't stupid, they know that if someone wants him that badly, they'll pay.

More likely, he stays quiet til the summer, then we'll see a transfer battle for him. We will not win this battle - the guy is going to end up being sold for around £35-40m IMO. Don't be surprised to see City buy him - they'll shift say, De Jong and Adam Johnson, and hand Bilbao a blank cheque just to 'get one over' on us.

I think its about time video technology was brought in. Not only for goal lines but for the rest of play aswel. Referees nowadays are makin mistake after mistake week in week out. It would make for a much leveller playing field then we have at the moment. Just my opinion, be nice to hear what other have to say on the matter.

a few reports knocking about that PSG are about to make a 45 mill move for Hazard really hope this is not true as it just keeps the market inflated.
I know a lot of people think we shouldn't pay this for that player etc..... but if hazard goes for even 35 mill , pastore has just gone for 36 what price martinez maybe we would have to spend big.
maybe fergy did have a point when he said there is no value in the market.

does anyone agree that it is the consistancy of team selection that may be causing this stutter in regards to performances. i would never criticise the team selection of ferguson and also the rotation has a lot to do with injury. But lately as a united fan it is hard to predict the starting line up. i feel the return of cleverly will help us immensely. Along with this i think it is the end of rio.

It's a bit too early to start transfer talk.....However, I would absolutely love it if we signed a few midfielders to strengthen the team. In January? I don't know if thats gonna happen n SAF isnt a fan of January transfers but maybe, just maybe, he may wish to improve for the remainder of the season. So, I've heard lots of names over the past few days.. Javi Martinez, Ricardo Montolivo, Bruno Soriano. Milos Krasic, Marvin Martin, Luka Modric & of course Sjneider (Its annoying now). Anyways, any possibilities? EDs? Syd?

I did post this as a response to another comment about Sneijder - but I just want to say that I don't think we will buy anybody in January. When have you lot ever known Fergie to panic buy. If he thought we needed a CM he would've bought one in the summer. If he wants somebody he'll bid for them. If not he doesn't bother, just lets the team get on with it.

I don't think even if we had the financial backing of City (like many of us wouldn't mind) that you would see the kind of spending we do at Chelsea and City. Granted he'd spend a bit more money getting the people he wanted but he wouldn't buy 3 or 4 world class players in one summer, it's just not how he works.

In January we might pick up a kid or something, but certainly not a 30m+ buy. I know you guys want one, and I'd love to see some big names come to the club but it just isn't going to happen!
