Anybody else baffled as to why Rafael was marking Drogba on corners and RVP was attempting to be on the post, surely it should have been the other way around?

Believable5 Unbelievable0

My first thoughts exactly, who sanctioned that shambles?

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed018's Note - I was shocked to see that as well, I mentioned it to the guys in the pub that it made no sense. Helped Chelsea out though so I was happy}

Seems Fellaini was tasked to mark Matic who didn't come up so Fellaini should then have marked Drogba but no communication on field

Agree0 Disagree0

It's the sort of thing that RVP as stand in captain should of been organising. That is why I always like the centre half to be captain.

Agree2 Disagree0

The best captains imo are cm's (robbo keano gerrard) for example they organise drive teams forward and constantly leading by example all over the park.

Agree0 Disagree0

Imo cb's are the best captains Vidic, Moore, Terry ect. Great organisational skills and are often feared as wel as respected

Agree0 Disagree1

28 Oct 2014 20:52:36
Agree about cb's. Its often because they can see the game in front of them too. Same as goalkeepers sometimes make good captains. It's rare that you have very successful sides where a forward is the captain. Maradona for argentina is a rare one.

Agree0 Disagree0

Why did LVG let this happen, surely his notes would have identified the lapse?

Agree1 Disagree2

27 Oct 2014 20:04:54
Probably wrong but what's the chance that lvg left falcao out to ensure he's fully fit for city so we have rooney falcao and rvp fully fit for probably a harder test considering were away with ? I actually think we could beat citys defence with our attacking prowess. Mangala looks a mistake ready to happen and kompany doesn't look the same player. But i worry against citys attack with the way aguero dribbles past players and the way silva easily splits open defences. i'm going for a 2-2 draw but if i was being optomistic i'd say 1-2 to us

Believable5 Unbelievable2

I'd be incredibly surprised to see us play two up top away at City.

Agree4 Disagree0

I think it will be the same team, with just Rooney coming in for Mata.

Falcao on the bench unfortunately.

Agree1 Disagree0

Just read about Rooney potential injury - maybe it will be the exact same line up. Are we re-enacting The Hunger Games in training, its truly unbelievable?

Agree3 Disagree0

Theres something definitely not right with training. But rooney being rooney, i'm sure he'll do everything he can to ensure he is fit

Agree0 Disagree0

If I were a betting man (which I was before my Mrs got the better of me), Rooney will be playing if its touch and go.

Agree2 Disagree0

Fully agree. let's hope falcaos good too!

Who thinks that if Chris Smalling keeps injury free and a good run of games he could turn into a quality CB? He seems to make less mistakes than Jones although obviously not as good on the ball.

Believable14 Unbelievable1

Me always seen potential in him myself maybe he will show it now

Agree3 Disagree0

I feel that Smalling gets a lot of undeserved stick about his distribution from the back. He was pretty solid with his passing against Chelsea and I think he's got better passing range than Jones. The bottom line for United's CB's is to get a solid run of games without being injured. None of our defenders will turn into class overnight if they only play once every month.

Agree7 Disagree0

Rojo distribution is what I worry about he tried at least three suicide passes out from the back he got away with them though one because smalling covered really well. I think the problem with our defence we haven't had a pair play well one might but the other doesn't I would like to see mcnair with smalling or jones but I think lvg really likes rojo but I think he is a bit of a liability but could be really good if he cuts out the mistakes

Agree1 Disagree6

28 Oct 2014 10:47:19
Rojo's distribution is excellent. Every time Smalling had the ball he gave it straight to him because he is brilliant on the ball. He played several through ball to Fellaini who then gave it out wide to Januzaj and that was a feature of our game against Chelsea.

Agree1 Disagree1

I must say I think Smalling's distribution was really good against Chelsea. I was watching him in particular as I have read people previously posting that his passing was terrible.

Lately I have seen that our defence have found it particularly difficult to get the ball out of defence to start an attack. But I thought Smalling handled it brilliantly well with his forward passing, almost immediately setting up an attack.

IMO he is our best defender at the moment, as I think Jones can be a bit rash and doesn't have the same ball control.

Agree2 Disagree0

28 Oct 2014 13:17:55
Rojo is comfortable on the ball usually and is known to be a very good passer of the ball but against Chelsea he had a couple of wayward passes and it's not the first game this season he's been like that. I'm sure it's something LVG would have mentioned to him after the game to focus on.

i see the press is out in force claiming united this and united that ! from bad referees to stone cold stunners in the box at every corner ! makes it all the more sweeter that they were all wrong and we didn't get steam rollered.

RKO outta nowhere on Ivanovic!

Agree3 Disagree0

27 Oct 2014 17:07:59
I love how both Smalling and Rojo had Terry and Ivanovic in headlocks at the same set piece. You've got to laugh at it.

Agree4 Disagree0

Noticed that myself Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

Its not like the chelsea players didn't grab their shirts before the incident anyway. did they headlock them or did the chelsea players put their heads under the arms of the defenders?

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha you have to love John Terry's hashtag on Instagram.

#JT&IVAWEREDOUBLEHEADLOCKEDATEVERYCORNER

Chelsea fan, I really hate that defending at corners, skrtel and shaw cross, it's disgusting, although, rojo and smallings wasn't as bad as the other incidents that happen

Agree0 Disagree0

Not like Terry himself never holds onto players

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed018's Note - sure but that's not what is in question. There were to plain as day incidents in the match that should've been penalties. I know it goes on every week and I know everyone is guilty of it but it'd be nice to see some consistency when it comes to calling fouls on these guys}

28 Oct 2014 10:51:55
There is consistency, it is pretty much always not a penalty. There has been one penalty for such an offence this season and that was on Shawcross last week, hence why such a big deal is being made of it.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed018's Note - then that's not being consistent week to week}

It happens week in week out, but now cause united have done it it's an issue. total b#ll*!$s

Agree1 Disagree0

Mistakes a bound to happen" the human element" but i will rather go for the video tec. to reduce this kinds of errors that occur in matches with refs.It can be so disheartening and good results can turn sour- for this season, Manchester |United vs Leicester City comes to mind.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Oct 2014 12:18:56
Ed,

so 99 times out of it happening about 100 times, that is quite consistent. If you watch Ivanovic and Terry's hands both of them have hold of the defenders shirt well before they get dragged down, so in theory it was 2 free kicks to United for pulling. It is such a tough penalty to give as it is meant to be a contact sport, like strebor says, if it wasn't United it wouldn't be an issue.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed018's Note - I know, you make fair points. I can still want the penalty though.}

Looking at it the other way the might tanks that are Terry and Ivanovic getting restled to the ground by the giants that are Rojo and Smalling was a quiet funny moment

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Oct 2014 14:13:12
Very pleased with a point and thought it was a fair result. Neither team deserved to lose and it was a very close game with both goalkeepers in particular having a big say on the game.

Instead of analysing the game though and saying the same as everyone else, I'm going to ask a question.

Our forward line is essentially complete. But what are we going to do about the central defensive pairing? We have 4 first team centre back on the books and only Rojo can stay fit for more than two games in a row and even then I'm not sure he will end up being a regular starter.

Do we need to bring in a new first choice pairing or is it training methods that are constantly injuring our centre backs?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

There does seem to be a lot of players getting injured during training at the minute. Something just doesn't add up

Agree0 Disagree0

Its becoming quite clear that we have CB's made of glass and IMO they need moving on as its becoming a big problem.
I like Phil Jones as a player but what use is he to us if he's always picking up injuries? Same as Evans and Smalling.
Right now I don't think its the training methods because they have all been injury prone on and off for years. I was hoping it was down to youth but it seems to be ongoing.

Agree0 Disagree1

27 Oct 2014 18:09:29
Well we have an injury crisis every year not just those three so has to be training methods. Its no coincidence the fitness coach got demoted.

Agree0 Disagree1

It's not just defenders getting injured though is it ?

Most importantly, the excitement and spirit is back at OT. The manager has good options and the squad is clearly buying into the program. Competition for places is becoming more intense. Players who have been written off are showing their desire and ability, causing us to eat our words - Fellaini, for example, is revealing why he's a fixture in the Belgian team. For me he was our man of the match and had the crossing been better maybe he would have scored.

Despite all the areas that still need improvement, one can see how this team is just a better final ball away from a breakout match. As the players get used to each other and the manager, and confidence, expectation and desire grow, this problem will hopefully be resolved and performances and results will surely get better.

Of course, should we lose 5-0 at City next week, the optimism may fade, such is its fickle nature!! Then I'll be agreeing with the Beast that LVG is a disaster.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

27 Oct 2014 12:09:49
your celebrations were a bit over the top yesterday, a draw at home ?

Believable2 Unbelievable14

Nice try, any last minute goal that earns a result is always going to be celebrated, it was a massive point for us because it will give our lads belief that we can compete with the best after seeing us capitulate against the big teams last season.

Agree9 Disagree1

27 Oct 2014 13:04:23
So why were your fans not celebrating a good draw away from home? Before the game I imagine most Chelsea fans would have been happy with a draw, but at the end of the game all I could see was 3000 miserable faces as you lost your lead in the last minute?

That misery you felt at conceding, reverse that and that's the excitement we felt. Its pretty simple, we drew a match all the press had written us off in and were probably the better team for large parts of the game.

So no, not over the top, but thanks.

Agree6 Disagree1

Why should you care if and how we celebrate? Unless it hurt u?

Agree3 Disagree0

mbd

I think your prediction that Chelsea would score 3 was over top.
Well earned point for us while you lot maybe shown a little complacency.

Agree3 Disagree0

Nearly as over the top as your celebrations in moskow as terry walked up to miss his pen !

Agree1 Disagree0

But not nearly as over the top as your lot on the 13th may 2012 at the stadium of light, still laughing at that one, phil jones face priceless.

Agree0 Disagree2

What happened to 3-1 ?

Agree0 Disagree0

Terry crying - priceless!

Match Report pt 2

Van Persie - I was calling for him to be brought off, thank god i'm not LvG but still one tap in doesn't warrant him playing the next game, on the back of some woeful performances. Just didn't seem like the older clinical finisher we all know and love.

SUBSTITUTES

Wilson - didn't really have a sniff. Decent getting to his header but was never going in. Wanna see this boy play more.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Here is my match report :)

DDG - Fantastic, his save to keep Hazard out. Best keeper in the PL in my opinion, other than perhaps maybe Courtios. Schmeichel said that he has an unorthodox way of saving shots, but who cares, he is very clever with it, he isn't the strongest and doesn't have the strongest wrists, so to get the ball out of the danger area he uses his feet/legs. I noticed that when Hazard went one on one, DDG closed him down with pace and if you watch it, he points the opposite direction to confuse Hazard. Magic.

Rafael - In the last few games i have been very impressed with Raf, this game not so much. His positioning was awful and he spent most of his time play CB as Smalling had to cover him. Poor game from Raf. And shouldn't have been marking Drogba on the corner.

Smalling - Smalling wasn't his usual Bambie on ice. He was actually quite solid. The more i think about it now, the more i realise he had a good game! got his head in where it was needed and made no silly mistale. that i remember!

Rojo - A couple mistakes made, i hate to say it but i think i prefer him at LB, not sure what that does for shaw but that's not my problem.

Shaw - Average, has some good link up with Januzaj and Di Maria but didn't offer m uch defensively.

Blind - Very tidy, and again just doesn't what he does best, keep it simple. Distribution very nice, all in all a good performance.

Fellaini - I see a totally new player in Fellaini, distribution very good, he battled and tackled well and attacking wise he adds a new dimension to the attack, if it was for Chelsea's organised back line i feel he would have added a lot more. I want too see him get a run of games now.

Januzaj - One footed. I saw him turning a full 360 degrees only using his left foot, i think he has been found out. looked better when he played on the right but he needs to do more.

Mata - Personally i would play Rooney at 10 vs City, simply because he cares a lot more, Mata has talent in abundance but defensively he is weak. Rooney will be back there and wanting to make up for the time he has spent out.

Di Maria - Not his best game, and i certainly won't barrate him for it, but all i will say is it wasn't his best game, he kept trying to do it alone.

Van Persie

Believable1 Unbelievable2

I completely dissagree regarding Rafael. Apart from his rash tackle that got him booked i thought he played extremely well against probably one of the best players in the world at the moment in Eden Hazard.
Why wasn't anything said about him marking probably the best header of the ball in the Chelsea team in Drogba. LVG should have spotted this, it went on all through the game when thay had a corner.
Rafael stands absolutely no chance in the air against a power house like Drogba.
It's little things like this that are hampering our season, would Drogba have scored if Smalling, Fellaini or Rojo been marking Drogba on that corner?

Agree4 Disagree0

In terms of the corner Fellani no Smalling no Rojo probably

Souness and Carragher (both ex-Liverpool) with their usual nonsense. It's funny how Carragher didn't mention Skrtel (or himself) and only used Shawcross as an example. Skrtel could easily give away five penalties every game if the referees were doing their jobs properly and he is by far the worst offender in the league for wrestling in the box, but he conveniently went unmentioned by the ex-Liverpool players. Was anything mentioned about Oscar? If it was Rooney who kicked out at a player he would have been sent off in an heartbeat. Jose substituted him instantly after that, but Chelsea should have been down to ten men. We still look very open in defensive midfield and defence, two areas that needed more attention (Hummels and Vidal cough cough), but if Courtois wasn't such a good keeper and RvP was on form, he could have had an hat-trick yesterday. We are improving game by game, but next season we will be more competitive. A draw was a fair result IMO as Chelsea had some good chances which were cancelled out by our very own very good goalkeeper. Next week will be a much harder game, although it's probably a good time to play City. Top four is there for the taking if we can find a bit of consistency. Liverpool have been found out for being a one-man team. Sterling is knackered already and Sturridge is back to his injury prone self. Without their soft penalties they are struggling to score goals at the minute.

Believable8 Unbelievable2

Overall, I can't complain about the result, we stole a draw, which will now carry us forward. The thing i'm still not getting LvG not getting up or making his presence felt.

Di amaria should have been brought off after 50 mins, I know he is a special player, but he did not look fit and imagine if we had 11 players on the pitch. Also the last couple of games I have been left feeling we should have gone for it slightly earlier, if we played 100 minutes a game, United would have beat west brom and Chelsea.

Welcome back sydney

Agree6 Disagree0

Hard to disagree with any of that aaallj5. The difference between the two sides is Chelsea are complete, we are still 2 windows from being complete. Chelsea also have a settled and experienced defence, whereas ours is the opposite. It's slowly coming together, but next season is when we will be serious contenders. We got a lot of building done last summer, so we can be much more careful buying now and we can put all of our efforts into 2-3 top quality signings. Our youth is also a good thing, Shaw looks like he's starting to gel. Adnan, Wilson, Blackett, McNair etc are pushing hard. 2-3 top signings, for example Hummels and Vidal (Falcao permanent) and we will be back to where we should be. A top quality, well balanced squad.

Agree4 Disagree0

I personally think the ref favoured us a bit in this game. Surprisingly so. I agree with you Syd, Oscar's challenge reminded me of Rooney's. January signings are imminent, wonder who will be available.
Btw good to have u back!

Agree1 Disagree1

mbd

Defender looks likely to happen Rojo is a disaster Smalling and Jones look solid Evans should be shipped out and bring in a decent injury free defender in January

Agree0 Disagree1

Rojo is a disaster? After ten games. haha. Vidic and Evra were also disasters after that many games. And they went on to be club legends. Wind your neck in.

Agree2 Disagree0

Rojo looks solid enough but would prefer a partnership of Smalling and Jones
