Was at the game tonight and I must say was very disappointed. Atmosphere was poor as usual and the defending was even worse. I posted a while back saying how many shots the opposition were getting on target and I know we have had a few makeshift back lines, but is anyone else marginally concerned? Arsenal could have scored 5 against us, Bolton could have scored 2, Chelsea should have got 3, Stoke could have had 3 and now Basel scored 3 with several chances to score a few more.

I know I am acting very pessimistic and no doubt will get a lot of haters for this post but does anyone else see this problem?

Wow only just seen what's going on at City. Tevez is not only a bad apple, he's completely rotten. I can't believe I've seen people defending him on twitter and the like. Astonishing. Apparently Dzecko stormed off after being substituted aswell? Mancini certainly isn't a happy bunny, and nor should he be.

I said all summer that we wouldn't buy the necessary class we needed in the midfield and Sydney and GAN defended the Glazers and said everything would be fine. Well was tonight fine or did we lack real quality where it mattered. I just don't know what is wrong with Evra as he strolls back whilst teams attack us. What is he doing with the Captains arm band disgraceful. I am sorry but I am still not convinced by Wellbeck and the sooner we get Chicho back the happier I will be. Rio showed his weakness tonight as he watched the ball float over his head rather than pick the man up for the second goal. I don't want to come all over jerk reaction to what was at best a pathetic performance but I also believe that this tactic we have of backing off teams and inviting them on to us so that we can counter attack is causing us many problems. Got to say I thoroughly enjoyed that game. Don't get me wrong I'm disappointed not to come away with a win but man that was entertaining.

Individual analysis:

Berbatov- should have really been on earlier, if not from the start. His critics say he slows the game down too much. Well in this game that is exactly what was needed, we gave the ball away far too much at 2-0 we looked like we were cruising, and we didn't quite know how to stop. He would have kept hold of the ball and kept us possession when we most needed it.

Giggs- gave the ball away far too much. For someone so experienced I am suprised at the amount of times he tried a little flick or a tricky pass that didn't come off.

Evra- not really sure what he was doing or trying to do. I had been sceptical of people saing he was past it but in this game I saw exactly what they meant. His legs seem to have completely gone.

Jones- despite the arsenal-esque defending from us, I still thought Jones stood out as one of our better players.

As for Basle, I will never understand why teams full of confidence and momentum choose to change tactics and sit back against us. As soon as they did I was confident of us scoring (when we had looked nowhere close before), I even thought we might nab the win. But like I say, entertaining game and still confident of easing the group comfortably, would just prefer us to buck up our ideas for the big games coming up.

Truly awful defensive performance tonight. It was like watching Liverpool against Spurs all over again. Park played his worst game in a United shirt. Every time he got the ball he gave it away. The ref defended well for Basel, broke up play three times for them in the second half. Evra was caught out of play constantly, but nothing new there. Berbatov had a great chance to square it to Nani for the winner, but selfishly misses the target from two yards out.

Just a disastrous all-round performance, didn't finish the game off in the first half when we had the chances. Beat Norwich and this will all be forgotten about, but if the defense don't improve it's a big IF.

Was i watching the same match as the rest of yous?
Carrick done brilliant.
If passing a ball backwards 10 yards or 10 yards to the side, not closing down and afraid to put a boot in for a tackle for 90 minutes means you had a blinder then fook me I'd be world class!
He's a passenger, offers nothing going forward and over the last 3 or 4 years he's had about 4 games where he stood out. We're Man Utd, we don't want somebody quietly going about their business in our midfield. He has no balls, he's afraid to put a foot wrong and in essence doesnt do anything effective.

poor performance tonight but some signs are appearing about our defence and midfield. ferdinand is on a slow decline, evra and fabio got forward too much and did not track back.worst of all was that we had no defensive midfielder to sit in front of defence.streller, frei and co were taking up positions in between our defence and midfield and fergie did nothing about it.carrick and anderson pushed on far too much.fergie should have told carrick to stay in front of defence and not to get forward, and this would have covered for the full backs gettin forward when we lost possession.poor defensive tactics more often that not = poor performance, and that was the case today.

I don't think Evra puts in 100% anymore. Are his legs gone.? Or is it just that he sees himself as one of the 'old guard' amongst the younger players and feels he doesn't need to put in a proper shift anymore. He's becoming increasingly infuriating to watch. he goes missing up the pitch and strolls back most of the time. Sydney! commented on his displays in the last few weeks and was spot on!

I am not one of RAINFISHS biggest fans but his statements of Anderson trying to carry his big fat ass around old trafford is so so true.
The guy looks over weight unfit and no desire or ability to get stuck in and put a shift in.
Then im afraid Carrick is his worst possible partner cause of his lack of pace and mobility Carrick tries to fill the gaps and protect the back 4 but IMO the things he lacks ensures that he cant do that to any great effect.
I am not bashing Carrick I think he does really try but if he was more mobile he would be soo much better.
Ferdinand looked totally disinterested and strolled round like he couldnt be bothered or was above this kind of nothing game (so he thought).
We need Vidic back and legs (Jones ) in midfield to protect the back 4.
Having said all that we are crippled with injuries and any team would struggle but tonight was all about players not giving their all against an average side.

Positives from tonight:

Welbeck got a brace.
De Gea didn't really do anything wrong.
Nani continues to produce quality end product, despite RFT whining about him, he is the hub of the team's creativity.
And Carrick quietly did his job.

Negatives or where to begin:
Ferdinand was awful. Slow, indecisive and making basic defensive errors. I feel this could be his last season, a shadow of his former self.
Valencia is a liability at right back. His work rate is superb and his tackling isn't bad. Put the penalty wreaked of inexperience.
Jones, despite having a good game, was at fault for the penalty, sometimes it's actually ok to hoof a clearance.
Giggs doesn't seem to have the engine anymore, he was spent after 50min.
Evra was poor defensively, again, all night.
Anderson didn't have the creative spark when we needed it.
Young's form has begun to drop. He has to keep his game up if he wants to become world class.
And finally, Berbatov in the last minute has a chance to unselfishly square the ball in a crowded area, instead he belts the ball into the side netting with his bad foot from an almost impossible angle. That was pretty much his only involvement. Case closed, he isn't playing for the team, he needs to move on.

Very poor performance, we shouldn't be losing a two goal lead against any opposition, let alone a club of Basel's standard. Now we can await a stream of salivating scousers who wait around on week day nights watching other clubs while their own team take on Europe's elite on xbox. On the plus side if we need a ball winning midfielder, the ref wasn't half bad at breaking up play.

Possibly THE worst defending i have seen at OT...ever. Ferdinand was making carragher look at the peak of his game. We are crying out for a DM, a dynamic one at that. In the past few games ive been gobsmacked at how many chances the opposition has, truly not like us at all, a DM is becoming a must for January (though will not happen)

Well, if we keep playing in CL like we're playing Carling Cup ou League Cup with half team. You guys can say whatever you want, the truth is, we're a very weak team when we're playing against teams that play high pressure like today. Evra and Ferdinand, shame!! SAF will now learn that CL is a very different competitions and every teams wants to perform well against big teams like us. We must beat with big margin these small teams to gain respect and fear from the others. I hate Michael Carrick.

What the hell was that? Defensively we were all over the place. I lost count of how many times Evra jogged back into position and Jones and Ferdinand looked pretty dodgy as well. I honestly can't remember the last time I watched United defend so badly.

Credit to Basel for playing pretty well they could have easily had 6 but still by Champions League standards they are a poor side when you compare them to many of the others we could end up facing.

Also what was with Fergie's subs? I didn't understand why Giggs was brought off and why was Berbatov only given 10 minutes when we clearly had to keep possesion? As soon as it went to 2-2 Berbatov should have been on but it wasn't until the 81st minute he was brought on. All in all one of the worst defensive performances I've seen in years from United.

A) What a terrible, terrible defence you have.

B) What a terrible, terrible midfield you have.

C) What a terrible, terrible team you are.

D) I like your keeper but at the momment he is not giving your defence, no confidence whatsoever.

E) You are a one man team.

I've been trying to tell you fools, but will you listen? Hopefully now you can see like i can, the many flaws within your sqaud.

I think that a few improvement in our squad could, and will be made during the next 10 months or so...this is how id like it to go.

GK: Kusczack to leave (this is a given), would like to see Johnstone get a first team number.

DEF: Looking at our defence it is generally excellent, however can sometimes be a little short in numbers. Cahill, with his current contract situation could be a cheap, low wage excellent signing. He's established in the league and is one of the best for sure. Possibly a wing back would be of use as well...however Fryers looks class already. Coincidently...i would like to see Bale as Evra's replacement, just a thought. Looking at this match if im honest I think Rio has lost something..

MID: The area that could be and possibly is lacking a little. Javi Martinez for me is just about perfect: strong, tall, quick, skilfull and is young. He has more about him than Modric for me and is cheaper. Also i think Iturbe or Shaqiri (probably Iturbe) will join, he can play anywhere in midfield or up top, definatly remidns me of CR7. To the exit i can see Gibson, maybe Carrick leaving, and giggs retiring.

ATT: Berbatov, Owen, Diouf and maybe Macheda all to be moved on. Higuain seems the most likely replacement for me. Great finisher, good at just about everything.

Have to say Carrick is have a flawless game, hasn't put a foot wrong in this first half. Welbeck will get his hat-trick. He is still not at 100% so these goals and game time will get him back to his best. I think Park will replace Young sometime in the second half and I also think Fletcher may come on for Anderson at sometime too. That will mean Fletcher, Young, Anderson & Park will still be fresh for Saturday. And Nani will be fully charged. Our defense has been terrible at times, cannot wait to see Vidic in that line-up again.

Just to let the lads know that we are 4.1 up against Norwich reserves.

Had a good think about the possible line-up for tonight and think it could look like this. I think Pogba's inclusion is more in hope, than expectation, but who could play ahead of him in a 4-3-3? Wouldn't we keep Fletcher & Anderson for Saturday? Or could Fletcher or Anderson play ahead of Pogba for 45 minutes? With Pogba coming on as a 2nd half sub? Will Carrick play there with Rio forced to play three games in a week? Unlikely me thinks.

What would peoples opinion be on going for Van Persie next summer? Cant see him signing a new contract at Arsenal so with him only having a year left he will surely be sold. In all likelyhood Berbatov, Owen, Diouf and Macheda will be gone by then so how does a quartet of Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck and Van Persie sound? Reckon any 2 from that 4 would work together. Managed to keep 4 top class strikers happy before because we were successful. Think a fully fit RVP is top class especially in this United team. What would he cost? 15million mark??? CHIPPY

Please correct me if i am wrong ed, because there is every chance i am, but do the FFP rules not stipulate that a team needs to be showing that they are at the very least attempting to comply with new UEFA rules to be able to compete in UEFA competitions. It does not say a team must be in profit. Does this not mean a team that is still running at a lost can compete if that loss is far less than in 2012,2013,2014. example Chelsea loss $76m 2011, $60m 2012, $45m 2013, $30m 2014. Would this not show compliance?

Would this then not mean your beloved Sydney is misleading everyone on this site by saying teams such as Man city and Chelsea will struggle to comply. I can not see into the future but i do feel Man City will struggle to actually fail to comply as it will not be hard to begin to show compliance by 2014.

Come to think of it there was a fella on the chelsea page 7-8 months back called CFC 1905, who used to rant how Chelsea were never to sign a player for over £20 mil or earn over 80k a week, and how roman had told his staff and manager this,Meanwhile on this page he would also keep on saying Chelsea were never to buy 'Big again' Even though ED002 had told him on numerous times this was not the case,Come to think of it 'CFC 1905' has left the chelsea page? Another 1 of Sydney's identities i think...

Hopefully Fabio will play at RB with Rio and Jones as CB and #Evra #LB.

Valenica looked abit out of place against Stoke his natural instinct was to attack and you could see he wanted to bomb down the wing.

Be nice to see Pogba play some part into tonights game and maybe even give Fryers 10 mins at LB depending on how game goes. With Injuries mounting up we need to give these youngsters some 1st team action to see if they can handle pressure etc in case we really need them.

Think Young and Nani should start on flanks tonight.

Play Wellbeck and Owen up front as Berba when he gets the ball when UTD attack he holds the ball and passes it back and we lose our momentum.

Think Flethcer should protect defence and let Anderson attack.

Alternatively we could play 4 5 1 and have Park in midfield and maybe play Wellbeck up front with Anderson and park playin behind him.

Ive nothing aginst Berba but hes a great player but at the wrong club, his style doesn't suit the UTDs way off play.

i'll post this here as all the scouse seem to be on here. You only ever had one great manager and that was bill. He built you into a successful club. All your other managers were just lucky in inheriting successful sides and good players. Also you were very lucky you had no rivals. United had declined. Leeds were only good under don revie. Chelsea, spurs and arsenal were just cup sides and everton only really did anything in the eighties. Forest couldn't sustain a challenge. Same with europe. Milan and inter had declined. Ajax fell apart. Bayern declined. Soon as everyone else were able to raise their game you crumbled.

A Liverpool & Chelsea fan bantering with each other on the United page, you cannot make this sh1t up. Why don't you do it on the Chelsea page, that place is like a graveyard. There's more life in a Tequila maggot. Here's my views on the two clubs for the coming season.

CHELSEA: Are yet to play anyone decent this season apart from us and Stoke City away. The rest of the games have been a struggle for you even though they were against weak opposition. After watching you closely, my feeling is that you will finish third this season, but could struggle in the next few years with the old guard all leaving. There will be mass changes of personnel over the next 12 months and I don't think you have the right manager to build this into a Championship winning team.

LIVERPOOL: Will be battling it out with Spurs & Arsenal for 4th spot. Not a threat to ourselves, Chelsea or City. You have finished your spending and I have to say wasted a lot of cash on ordinary players. This team is not good enough to pressure the top three, not now, not ever. Without securing CL TV money and prize money you will have to sell players to be able to buy players, even though you nothing to sell. Perhaps the inevitable sale of Suarez will bring in some funds for you to buy a couple decent strikers? Like I have always said, if Liverpool fail to finish 4th then say goodbye to Suarez, the player is a Tevez/Balotelli type player and is a ticking time bomb. He is going to want a move and if Liverpool try to stop him then he will be a pain in the arse.

Not that bright? Is this because I literally have no respect for your club whatsoever and it could be seen im taking sides with the one side with a GREATER history than your own. Or is it because you little brain cant actually comprehend an arguement that successfully puts your little club back in its hole?

Like a earlier poster I have never seen your club win a league title. So as i asked before and got sideswiped by your emotional missus lfc. When was that last league title won?

You wanna sit here and harp on about league titles and champions league success but truth be told you currently cannot even qualify for champions league, and you cant even get a point from Stoke in the PL.

Read this please ladies

"My dads bigger than your dad blah blah blah blah...
I would expect this talk from Mancs or Chelsea fans but the worst aspect is hearing it from Liverpool fans.

Stadium size is irrelevant! Trophies won is to some degree wrong as well.

Liverpool are a gigantic club because like Barca or Celtic they define the game of football in a way in which other clubs dont.

It is the communion between the supporters and the players that builds a clubs soul and identidy.

Its not the size of the stadium the shape or look of a stadium that matters. Anfield is not a place as such but a community a unified society.

Old Trafford, Roy Keane their talisman critised the lack of atmosphere and the corporate nature of the ground.

Stamford Bridge they hand out plastic flags to fat middle class londoners and when they do make a banner its a direct copy of Liverpools, Anfield gates and all.

Anfield is wherever Liverpool play. Anfield was the Ataturk back in May 2005 or Old Trafford back in 2009.

Dont measure Liverpool in terms of owners wealth, stadium size, balance sheets comercial revenue etc that is for the marketing brands the souless clubs like REAL or UTD teams even their own fans struggle to like for they see nothing of themselves reflected in the club.

Look at the words of Maradona, T Henry, Eto, Cruyf, etc etc etc the worlds greatest players recognise that LIVERPOOL and its supporters have set the standard.

Youll never walk alone sung out while the KOP is a moving quilt of colour and banners THERE IS NO GROUND NO GROUP OF FANS WHO COMPARE.

Barca great because they represent a people denied a voice for so long because they played for more than glory but for identidy.

And Celtic who with legions of loyal fans conquered Europe with a team of local lads led by a man who did not earn the millions that Sir Alex enjoys nor was he Knighted, little did it matter he had the respect and love of the Celtic faithfull and a place in History.

And then Liverpool, a club were emotion is never hidden away a place that remembers never forgets,a place were the passion for the club is unmatched a place of continuity an ethos a way of life.

Bill Shanky didnt have race horses nor was he friends with rich Shieks or Thai bussiness men, he was humble working class socialist with values that were echoed in the hoardes of working class men and women who followed the same religion as himself LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB.

We are the biggest club and more importantly we are the biggest family and at Liverpool You Never Walk Alone.

DONT BUY THE SUN {Ed009's Note - One of the best posts I have read on this site.}"

It's people like DONT BUY THE SUN, Sir Bob, JRG, lfc, Redeyedhector, Real KB, Roy, Jonson6, Ozone, Ed001, Ed009, Ash, Chris from Tanworth etc, etc, etc....That keep proving to you fools time after time, why we are the greatest and most knowledgable fans on the planet.

Were as, it's people like TK, Shappy, RFT, Sydney/Spoof/Uncle Malcolm, Red Devil, Matthew, HERBIE etc, etc, etc....That keep proving to us, why you are the most biased and uneducated fans on the planet.

Cheers

Sorry lfc when did u say that last title was? you and blair are getting good at deflecting.

I am by no means teaming up with the Man Utd boys, im just being logical.

Currently Man Utd sit 1st and Chelsea 3rd Liverpool are somewhere further down, i start to loose interest after the CL spots. Now i know you not the brightest lot you scousers but do u think that makes for a good pro Chelsea arguement against Man Utd or pool?

Ed i cant reply to posts so please can you post this for my good mate Blaire.

Blaire you think i should keep being a chelsea supporter quite. Now is that so its not just the man utd boys giving you a verbal flogging. Because we all know that both Chelsea and Man utd are in a different galaxy to Liverpool.... maybe they werent back when u won your 18 league titles but could you please refresh my memory as to when your last one was? Even your players know it. They beg you guys to let them leave: Torres, Merielles, Mascherano.

You scousers gloat like its still the glory days. Its not. Its 2011. I know it seems like a world away mate but thats only becuz back then if your so called king kenny was manager he would be shot for spending $35million on a overweight giraffe.

In this day and age teams try and actually win cups and leagues, rather than sit back with a smirk about the 'good ol days'. Thats why Man United ARE the greatest team in England. They continue winning. They gloat about past wins and then win something else. Unlike scousers who just gloat for some reason.

i raised a question the other day mentioning cities. what i was trying to say is there are too many teams who are not really the true teams from the cities they claim to come from. aston villa not a city name only a small area in birmingham. everton not a city but a small area again or a mint. then there is man CITY true habitat of the city and Man United a small industrial estate in stretford which becomes over run with cockneys and irish once a fortnight.

we need to support the team that is true to the area not a team fed on corporate money or glory hunting prawn sandwich eating wannabes.

thanks for listening

Got to love the absolute sh*te posted by Blair and LFC with respect to Liverpool and the KD love fest.

John Henry bought the Red sox here in Boston and they went onto win the Baseball World Series in 2004 for the first time in 86 years!

The Manager, Tito Francona followed up with another win in 2007 and the guy is practically a Saint in Boston.

Boston though is a demanding sports city - with four successful teams in the Celtics, Pats, Sox and the Bruins - added to the historic rivalry with New York.

This year off of another round of very heavy investment the Red Sox are seriously at risk of not making the play offs - and Francona is VERY much at risk.

John Henry made the "logical" choice to appoint KD to replace Hodgson to appease the fans, but the money invested EXPECTS a return - American owners are ALL business.
What do you think might happen if KD does not deliver CL football next season?

Oh that's right in KD we trust....no problem then finishing above United or City or Chelsea or Spurs or Arsenal....

Kenny was a brilliant player, but is and always will be a mediocre manager.

Good luck lads...you're going to need it.

PS Maybe you should check the odds you'll get on KK getting sacked before the end of the season.
We know you don't really believe the crap you post...but keep it up - the entertainment value is truly priceless.
CL again this week...ouch - too funny.

I find it quite amusing that liverpool supporters continue to come on this site and try and drum up some banter with you guys. I mean they are evidently no longer mufc's competition, so there is only one conclusion i can come up with.

They are trying to grasp onto anything they can that reminds them of their once successful club. By you guys allowing them to have some friendly banter with you, they still feel like they are competitive.

Quick facts:

You are no longer the powerhouse you once were. (Your position on recent tables suggests as much, and lack of CL football. Which does make me laugh)

King Kenny is not going to be your saviour. And never will he be comparable to SAF (He agreed to the $35m for Carroll. Which also makes me laugh and the $50m we paid for Torres look like a bargain)

I dont actually like MUFC at all, but boy do I HATE LIVERPOOL.

I think you MUFC boys are in for another title as much as it pains me to say, but I do think you will earn it. Just to bad Barca is around or the English teams would rain supreme in CL.

Sorry for the rant
